Nottawasaga and Creemore School Principal Mark McCain, teacher Jennifer Angus and custodian Kevin Charman unveil the old school bell, now installed in the lobby of the new school, at a ceremony Wednesday.
Bell saved from school annex by Trina Berlo The old school bell was unveiled during a special ceremony at Nottawasaga and Creemore Public School Wednesday morning. The bell was removed from the annex, which served most recently as the school’s junior site until it closed in 2014.
It has been mounted inside the school lobby on a base made of reclaimed red brick, as a tribute to the school’s roots. It complements an existing mural of the original high school and weathervane. The bell was purchased in 1882 by the citizens of Creemore and the surrounding township for a new fourroom school built the previous year.
When a larger six-room school (the annex) opened in 1917, the bell was mounted on the roof. Current and former students, staff, parents and board dignitaries gathered for the March 20 ceremony, which included entertainment from the school’s guitar and ukulele club and choir. Skating Club marks 50th anniversary by Trina Berlo Creemore Skating Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary with this year’s carnival highlighting the best of the past five decades. Organizers are drawing inspiration from past programs and even hauling out some original costumes for the occasion. The club’s scrapbooks documenting each of the 50 years are full of smiling
faces and many recognizable local family names. When the club formed in 1969, there were 50 skaters registered before the first lesson, and it continued to attract youngsters. The TD Lands Community Consultation Committee (TLC) will be hosting their final public meeting Saturday, March 30. This will be the third gathering organized by the TLC, an ad hoc committee formed to share a community vision and recommendation for the village’s bank building with the Creemore Community Foundation (CCF). The TLC will present their findings and recommendations with comments from the CCF and a brief question and answer period to follow. The goal is to keep the presentation brief so people can enjoy a casual reception with refreshments after the planned proceedings. The TLC encourages the community to use this time to share their thoughts and questions with one another as well as with the members of their committee and the foundation. “It has been an extensive process and we have been inspired by the community’s engagement. This meeting is not just the culmination of the TLC’s work, it is also our opportunity to thank everyone for their involvement,” says TLC chair Sara Hershoff. The presentation will take place at Station on the Green and begin at 4:30 p.m. For more information contact TLC chair Sara Hershoff at 705-466-9906, or sara@creemore.com.
