Corey Finkelstein (left) and Trace Benson, a remote control enthusiast, are preparing a mini version of the Cardboard Castles Beetle for Saturday’s Creemore Valley Classics car show. Junior judges including Ella and Dryden Dinsmore will be picking their favourite entries.
Creemore welcomes the classics by Trina Berlo Creemore’s annual “un-car show”, organized by Corey Finkelstein for 10 years, is back this year with a new name and a new date. Creemore Valley Classics, coming up this Saturday, has branched off from Copper Kettle Festival because it was popular enough to be a standalone event. It’s the un-car show because it’s different from the others. The trophies are unique and locally handcrafted and there is something for everyone, even people who don’t like to talk about cars. Finkelstein is expecting about 600 classic vehicles to line the main street, from George to Wellington and over to the Legion. Cars will also be on display on Caroline St. East, between Mill and Library and a portion of Francis
St. East. The village makes an ideal backdrop for the car show and he decided on the date to add one more large event to showcase the village in July. “It’s really not about the car show, it’s all about the town. The only reason I do the show is to support the town, to showcase the shops, the storeowners and the restaurants,” said Finkelstein. “It brings a huge crowd.” He said an average of two people come with every car, plus the spectators, which can add up to 3,000 to 5,000 or more visitors for the show. For Finkelstein, it’s more about the stories behind the cars than the cars themselves. To celebrate Canada 150, he put out a call for VIP registrants. People were asked to share a photo and a story about

their vehicle and what makes it special. They will be in a designated area on Mill Street between Caroline and Edward. Five of those will be selected to be judged by Hagerty Junior judges. Organizers put a call out to NCPS and 12 youth were selected as judges. They will be giving out ribbons at the award ceremony at 4 p.m. at the intersection of Mill and Caroline. Trophies will also be handed out at that time. Special interest groups will be attending – a Miata club is visiting and there will be a Corvette corral. Wasaga Beach Hand Racing will be setting up a remote control track and people are invited to try it out all day long. The Legion is the anchor of the car show. Fourteen prizes worth $30,000 are up for grabs from Creemore Springs Brewery through a Create More Fund, to mark the brewery’s 30th anniversary. “In 1987, we founded Creemore Springs Brewery and decided to do things differently. We became makers and spent the next 30 years honing our craft,” said the brewery’s director of marketing Karen Gaudino. “Today, we want to give back to all the other makers – from artists, sculptors and craft makers, to the chefs and farmers who are out there carving their path.” Those interested, are invited to submit entries by posting photos, videos and text on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using #CreateMoreFund. Makers are asked to tell their story and show their dedication to their craft, whether a hobbyist or professional. The brewery is offering a grand prize of $10,000, a second prize of $5,000, five prizes of $1,000, two local prizes of $2,500 and five local maker space prizes of $1,000. Submission deadline is Sept. 5. Voting on the shortlist of 25 makers will begin on Sept. 14 and the winners will be announced on social media by Oct. 18. Judges are Creemore Springs Brewery founder John Wiggins, designer and sign maker Shane Durnford, Brent Preston and Gillian Flies of The New Farm, Caesar Guinto and Sam Holwell of Creemore Kitchen.
