COPPER KETTLE FUN Last Saturday’s Creemore Springs Copper Kettle Festival was a huge success, with over 200 classic cars lining Mill Street and a huge crowd enjoying the afternoon at Mad River Park. From gymnastics tumblers to darci-que’s awesome facepainting, from Rodney’s oysters to the Legion cantina, from pony rides to the dunk tank, there was lots to see and do. As always, music played a big part of the festivities, with Tuxedo, Free Whiskey, the Webster Brothers, the Ginn Sisters and the Spades rocking Mad River Park and Frannalee playing a wellattended car show after-party at the Sovereign. For more festival coverage, see pages 3, 6 and 7. Photo BryanDavies.com

TEN HILL WIND PLANS ABANDONED Echo Briefs Acciona will cancel land options rather than sell

by Brad Holden Despite whatever happens further north at Fairgrounds Road and County Road 91, it now appears that Creemore residents will not have wind turbines on their own horizon in the forseeable future. Paul Austin, the community relations manager for Acciona Renewable Energy contacted the Creemore Echo this week with some news concerning land they had been evaluating at the top of Ten Hill. The New York-based company had acquired options on the land, on the west side of Fairgrounds Road, about four years ago in a joint project with Canadian-based Suncor Energy. The two companies dissolved their partnership earlier this year, with Acciona taking full ownership of the Ten Hill options.

This week, Austin informed us that his company has “found that the total amount of acres under option in Creemore is insufficient to support a potential project,” and as a result “we have notified our landowners we won’t be continuing development and want to thank those individuals particularly for their longstanding commitment to a potential project and to a clean, sustainable energy future for all Ontarians.” When pressed for a clarification, Austin confirmed that Acciona “will be surrendering, i.e. cancelling, the options, and not selling the project to another prospective developer.” There are two other potential wind developments near Creemore. One, in Maple Valley, stalled halfway through its Environmental Assessment (EA) last year. The other, at Fairgrounds and 91, is the most imminent; it continues to move forward on its own EA.

Legion 50/50 Draw

Quarry OMB Participant Deadline Set

A new deadline has now been set for people who wish to register as participants and appear before the Joint Hearings Board regarding the Duntroon Quarry Expansion. Individuals who wish to register must do so and provide a written statement of their testimony by October 22. They will then have the opportunity to appear before the Board on November 23. Last week, the Board decided to extend the deadline rather than hold a public meeting as part of its proceedings. The difference between appearing as a participant and speaking at a public meeting is that, as a participant, a written statement must be filed ahead of time and lawyers will have the opportunity to cross-examine each participant’s evidence.

The $311 prize in the Creemore Legion 50/50 draw at the Copper Kettle Festival has yet to be claimed. If you have ticket #591031, please call the Legion at 466-2202 to collect.

Pooh Bear at the Market

Winnie the Pooh will be at the Farmers’ Market this weekend as part of the annual Anniversary Children’s Market. In partnership with Curiosity House Books, Winnie will make a special appearance beginning at 10 am in the Station.
