Shoulder Pain In The Overhead Athlete stabilizers. These allow your shoulder blade to move properly as to not cause your tendons to get pinched in your shoulder, resulting in damage and pain. Core strength is also an important component of proper throwing form and to decrease injury risk. Core strength, along with lower body strength and flexibility, allows the proper distribution of forces along the body as to not stress the shoulder more than necessary. There must exist in the body the proper balance of mobility and stability to create a strong throw and to limit injury risk. If this balance does not exist, injuries can occur, including rotator cuff tears, labrum tears, and ligament tears. Some of these injuries may be severe enough to require surgical repair. A thorough physical therapy evaluation can assess limitations in all the above areas. An exercise program can then be created to address these impairments and allow a return to pain-free and proper throwing.

by Joel Maietta

Shoulder pain in the overhead athlete is a very common complaint.

Considering the fact that separation forces

in the shoulder during throwing can equal someone’s own body weight, it is no surprise that pain can occur. This activity requires a combination of strength, coordination, synchronicity, and body control. Because of these factors, shoulder pain is often seen in athletes of all ages as well as any adult who may decide to throw a ball just one time. During a physical therapy evaluation for shoulder pain from throwing, there are multiple parts of the body that need to be assessed. These include shoulder motion, shoulder strength, shoulder blade strength, core strength, as well as lower body strength and flexibility. When you throw a ball, your arm has to cock back in a motion called “external rotation” and then come forward in a motion called “internal rotation.” If the internal motion of the shoulder is limited, then excessive forces can travel through the arm and cause pain. There are various stretches that can be used to improve this motion to decrease throwing pain. In addition to motion, the tendons in your shoulder, known as the rotator cuff, need to be strong and stable to allow a proper throwing motion. They control the “ball” in the “ball and socket” of your shoulder, and without proper strength and stability, you can have a shoulder injury while throwing. In conjunction with your rotator cuff, it is also necessary to have proper strength of your shoulder blade, known as your scapular

Does your child have an Individualized Education Program (IEP)? Here’s what you can do to start the year off the right way. 1. Read your child’s IEP. Be familiar with the accommodations the school should be providing. 2. Write an introduction letter. Introduce your child to his teachers on paper. Tell them how he performs best and describe unique qualities that the teacher should know about your child. 3. Hand deliver a copy of your introduction letter and your child’s IEP to his teachers. Try to schedule a meeting either before the start of school or in the early weeks. You can confirm your child’s schedule and talk about accommodations with his teacher. 4. Review the IEP with your child. Tell your child what accommodations he should be getting in class. Depending on his age, tell him how to remind his teachers to provide his accommodations. 5. Schedule a Progress Review Meeting with the Child Study Team. Schedule a meeting with the child study team for October to review implementation of the IEP. Talk about what is working in your child’s new classes and what can be improved upon. 6. Keep communication open. Committing to ‘Memory’ –

Designer Turns Her Baking Hobby Into a Full-Blown Career AnnMarie Cooney did not grow up dreaming of becoming a baker. Visions of sugar plums and intricately decorated cakes were not dancing through her head as a young girl. By trade, Cooney was a kitchen designer, but retired early to raise her daughters. “With three girls, my job was to raise good women,” Cooney says. It was a special request from her daughter that would eventually turn her into a AnnMarie Cooney highly sought-after cake designer and baker. “It all started because my daughter wanted a cake,” Cooney says with a smile. Cooney’s middle girl, was born with health issues that resulted in special needs. So when she wanted a circus cake for her fifth birthday, Cooney made her the best circus cake around. That was 14 years ago, and her girls quickly caught on to their mom’s special talent. At every birthday, they requested a special cake. “It became, ‘what can we do next’ and ‘how can we top that,’ Cooney says. Then she began making cakes for friends. Cooney’s husband had to build an additional kitchen at her house just to accommodate all of the special cake requests. When Cooney’s youngest daughter entered kindergarten six years ago, Cooney decided she wanted to go back to work. “But, I needed to figure out what I was going to do,” Cooney says. Sadly, Cooney’s grandmother, with whom she was very close, passed away during this time. “I was sitting at home, just very sad, and my cousin called me to meet her at the park with her kids,” Cooney says. However, in the midst of grief, she didn’t feel up to it. “My cousin sad, ‘come on grandma would want us to.’ So I went, Cooney says. On the way to the park, she saw the real estate sign. She checked it out and immediately knew that it would be the perfect location for her bakery, A Sweet Memory Cake Shoppe & Tea Room. “My grandmother left each of her grandchildren a small inheritance and it was just enough for me to open my business,” Cooney explains. Cooney spent about five years at that location before moving to another larger space six months ago just two miles down the road in Waretown. A beautiful picture of her grandmother has watched over her since the day she opened. It’s difficult to simply call Cooney’s creations “cakes.” Some designs are so intricate that they look like art. Cooney and her team created a three-dimensional depiction of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” that captured the essence of this masterpiece with sweet, swirly curves and lines of vividly hued icing. Then there’s the adorable panda birthday cake that could easily be mistaken for a cuddly toy. The list of unique, edible masterpieces goes on and on, That’s because they average a minimum of 30 specialty cake orders per week, mostly by working with different catering and special event venues in and around Long Beach Island. However, they also have a long list of loyal customers. “Some of our customers started with a gender reveal and now we’re doing their fifth birthday cake,” Cooney says. Customer Kathy Helm of Waretown got her grandson’s birthday cake from Cooney close to five years ago. “It was perfect, I brought a couple pictures of what I wanted and they just did their thing,” Helm says. And she has been coming here ever since. “I’m in sales, so I bring my clients treats from here all the time,” Helm says. She’s also brought her granddaughter to Sweet Memory’s princess tea parties. “Our clients really do become our friends,” adds Cooney. In addition to the special-order cakes, A Sweet Memory, has a selection of seasonal cakes, mini desserts, cookie sandwiches and other baked goods readily available daily. Other creative creations include their cake pies; 521 Route 9 • cakes topped with pie filling and decorated to look exactly like a pie. “Our baking is very seasonal,” Cooney explains.

Winter flavors includes a tasted snowball cupcake, which is a chocolate cake filled with marshmallow and chocolate fudge, frosted with coconut buttercream, rolled in toasted coconut, drizzled with chocolate and topped with marshmallows. Or their gingerbread scone with maple cream. Or the orange, cranberry Christmas scone with orange cream. “My grandmother used to always have her ‘lady friends’, as she called them, over for tea,” Cooney explains, adding that she wanted to honor her grandmother by adding a high tea to her bakery. “We squeezed one table in our previous location and began hosting afternoon teas.” They were all so well-received Cooney has expanded her operation to include a full-time tea room. Decorated with a lovely mix of china and flowers, the tea room serves tea, lunch and snacks from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. They also offer a high tea, but reservations are required. “Our clients have really created the charm of this place,” says Cooney, who adds almost of her china, platters and place setting have been donated by her customers. High tea ($27.95) is served on tiered platters and begins with an individual pot of tea, chosen from their selection of more than 50 teas. Followed by seasonally inspired salad and homemade soup, four varieties or tea sandwiches, freshly baked scones served with their specialty creams, and completed with a selection of their miniature desserts. “Everything from our meats to spreads, our dressings and chutneys, our soups are all made fresh in-house,” Cooney says. Cooney also places an emphasis on healthy fare. “We source organic whenever possible and offer a large selection or vegetarian friendly dishes,” she says. With the extra space the tea room has added to A Sweet Memory Cake Shoppe and Tea Room, Cooney is able to host special events. “We’ve done cake-decorating classes and other ladies events,” Cooney says. They’ve also hosted princess teas, American Girl teas, unicorn teas and more. They even carry a line of tea geared towards little ones. “We even have a dress up section that ladies and little ladies love,” Cooney says. A little help from above has turned Cooney’s one-time hobby into a business that brings customers joys bite by bite. The business that Cooney started out of her home has grown into a full-time operation with a staff of eight. “We work hard and we work a lot, but we really do love each other,” Cooney says. She says they have become a great team and she couldn’t do all of this without them. Cooney’s brotherin-law, Paul Cooney, recently joined the team as chef and baker. There’s also Sarah Rod, the head decorator, and Cindi Reider, head fondant who works in fine detail. “Sarah and Cindi are so talented, they really are the best around, they’re artists,” Cooney says. Together, what they create can easily be considered art, but at the end of the day-or party or wedding or afternoon tea- and after the last bite, their masterpiece has been turned into a sweet memory.

Could I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)? What is PCOS?

What are the long-term health risks?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common reproductive disorder in women, affecting approximately 4-12% of reproductive age women. It is found in both normal weight and overweight/obese women and can present with varying symptoms—the most common of which is infrequent or absent menstruation. There is some evidence of a genetic predisposition to developing PCOS, as first-degree relatives of women with PCOS are at increased risk of having PCOS as well.

What are the symptoms?

PCOS symptoms include a history of irregular menstruation, varying degrees of male pattern hair growth (hirsutism), and acne. Menstrual changes can range from irregular, infrequent, to even absent menstrual bleeding. As the time between periods increases, so does the risk for developing precancerous changes and ultimately uterine cancer. Therefore, women with irregular cycles should consult their gynecologist so they may be properly evaluated for these potential conditions.

How is PCOS diagnosed?

Women with PCOS are diagnosed after obtaining a detailed medical history, performing a physical exam and pelvic ultrasound, and relevant blood testing. Medical history is consistent with either irregular or missed menstrual periods, and/or increased male pattern hair growth and adult acne. Ultrasound findings may include enlarged ovaries with numerous small follicles (fluid collections). Blood testing may reveal high levels of male hormones such as testosterone.

What causes PCOS?

Helping Small Miracles Happen

The exact cause of polycystic ovary syndrome is unknown. PCOS is thought to stem from alterations in ovarian hormone production which creates an increase in the level of male hormones. These hormones disrupt the feedback system to the brain and also result in insulin resistance.

PCOS is associated with several long-term health risks including diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, and cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is recommended that women with PCOS be screened for these disorders, so that early intervention can be implemented. How does PCOS affect fertility? The fundamental fertility issue in women with PCOS is a lack of regular ovulation, which is a critical component to successful conception. Fertility medications can improve the chances of ovulation and achieving a successful pregnancy. In addition, weight loss in the overweight woman with PCOS can increase the chances of spontaneous ovulation and pregnancy.

How is PCOS treated in women not interested in pregnancy?

In women not attempting pregnancy, menstrual irregularity is often treated through the use of oral contraceptives. When abnormal hair growth is the primary concern, oral contraceptives, with or without the addition of anti-androgen medications, can directly inhibit hair growth. Excess hair can be removed through shaving, tweezing, waxing or the use of electrolysis and laser treatment. In the case of insulin resistance, the use of metformin may be indicated to help restore normal glucose parameters, and this treatment option is also safe and acceptable in women interested in becoming pregnant. At the Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey, we are available to answer your fertility questions, perform a complete fertility evaluation, and discuss individualized options for conception—all in a comfortable and caring setting. We are a full service fertility center experienced in all the latest technologies and look forward to helping you achieve success, whatever your goals.

What You Need To Know About Celiac Disease

Celiac Disease is a common disorder that affects 1 in 133 people. In this disease, individuals have a reaction to gluten, which is contained in certain food products. This reaction injures the lining of the digestive system and causes a wide variety of symptoms. What are the symptoms of Celiac Disease?

The most common symptoms of Celiac Disease are diarrhea, bloating and abdominal pain. Some patients may experience weight loss, anemia or other vitamin deficiencies. There may be delayed growth or delayed puberty in children. Other symptoms may include fatigue, bone pain, headaches and muscle aches. Some people with the disease may have no symptoms at all. The disorder is often attributed to Irritable Bowel Syndrome or Fibromyalgia as the symptoms are so varied.

What causes Celiac Disease?

Certain individuals have a genetic susceptibility to Celiac Disease and something then triggers the disease to develop, such as stress or other illness. If you have a parent or sibling with this disorder, you will have a 1 in 20 chance of developing the disease. Celiac Disease may be diagnosed in childhood. Others may not find out about the disease until adulthood due to later onset of the disease or a delay in the diagnosis.

What is gluten and what foods contain it?

Gluten is a mixture of proteins contained in wheat, rye, barley and malt. Due to crosscontamination, oats may also contain gluten if not labeled strictly gluten free. As you might imagine, gluten is therefore in many food staples such as bread, pasta, cakes and pizza.

specific and if positive, almost certainly reflect the underlying disease. Some patients with immune deficiencies may have the disease even with negative blood testing. Genetic testing is also available. Once positive blood tests are identified, your doctor will need to obtain a biopsy of the small intestine to confirm the disorder. A procedure called an upper endoscopy can be scheduled to obtain the necessary tissue. This procedure takes only about five minutes and is performed by a gastroenterologist with the patient asleep with intravenous sedation.

How is Celiac Disease treated?

Celiac Disease is treated with a gluten-free diet. This diet means avoiding all foods that include wheat, barley, rye, malt or oats (unless specified gluten-free oats). All prepared foods are labeled and required to list these ingredients, which makes shopping easier than it had been in the past. Many foods are also clearly marked as gluten free. Foods such as meats, eggs, fruits, vegetables and cheeses are naturally gluten free. There are many glutenfree prepared foods now available in the local supermarket and many restaurants have gluten-free menu options.

Jill Collier, MD, Medical Director, Endoscopy Center of Toms River

Patient Tesimonials: “Procedure went smoothly. Dr. Collier was very informative regarding procedure, as well as communicating results. Felt very comfortable with Dr. Collier and am thankful to have her as my physician for this process.” ~ JoAnn, 65, Forked River “What stood out to me was the patience and kindness that everyone at your facility exhibited. Your front desk staff was knowledgeable and patient on explaining everything and answering questions, and very pleasant. You can tell that everyone likes working there because their happiness comes through. Dr. Jill Collier gave me all the information I needed and made me feel at ease. This was an excellent experience.” ~ Jennifer, 39, Brick

Omar Tamini, MD Jill Collier, MD Edgar Bigornia, MD

Who helps to manage Celiac Disease?

Once a patient is diagnosed, it is important to meet with a nutritionist to learn about a gluten-free lifestyle. Patients and family members can educate themselves about the disease from numerous books and websites. Local support groups are also available.

Conclusion…

How does gluten affect the bowel in Celiac Disease?

When patients with Celiac Disease eat products containing gluten, an inflammatory reaction started by their body’s own immune system takes place in the digestive system. This reaction causes the surface lining of the small intestine to become damaged. An injured small bowel cannot function properly and absorb the nutrients in food. This causes the patient to develop malabsorption or the inability to process food products.

As you can now understand, Celiac Disease is a common disorder, which may lead to diarrhea and abdominal pain. It is often misdiagnosed as other common illnesses. It can be diagnosed with lab and endoscopic testing. Treatment is available in the form of diet modification. If you think you may have Celiac Disease, contact your gastroenterologist to initiate the proper testing.

How is Celiac Disease diagnosed?

Celiac Disease can be detected with blood testing. Blood tests can show elevated antibody levels in affected patients. The blood tests are very

Special Needs Planning 101: Why you should act NOW Sean Rice, CTFA, a Garden State Trust Company VP and Trust Officer working out of our Cherry Hill and Linwood offices, recently wrote this blog we want to share with you. “Advocacy group Autism Speaks reports that the cost of caring for a person with autism can run an estimated $1.4 million over the course of their lifetime.” https://blog.mint.com/planning/the-cost-of-raising-aspecial-needs-child-0713

Unfortunately, caregivers of special needs children and adults know all too well the financial and emotional challenges they face now, and often dread the idea of trying to plan for when they’re no longer around. But taking the time to properly plan ahead for a child’s care in the future will help to alleviate some of the stress being felt currently. First and foremost, visit with an estate planning attorney with extensive experience in the field of special needs planning. These are experts in a complex and dynamic field, in which the rules are frequently changing. For loved ones who may be eligible for governmental assistance programs such as Medicaid or SSI, that eligibility could be lost if the child receives a lump sum from a lawsuit or inheritance (for example, 2018 Medicaid eligibility requires that an applicant own no more than $2,000 in countable assets). If you are planning to leave a relatively large sum of money to a child who may currently be or may eventually be eligible for these types of “means-tested” benefits, it’s critical that the family speak with an attorney about creating a third party Special Needs Trust (SNT) (also referred to as a Supplemental Benefits Trust). These specially designed trusts allow those assets to be made available for supplemental needs or

qualified disability expenses, and yet still allow the beneficiary to retain eligibility for certain governmental benefits. If you will be creating a third party SNT during your lifetime or under your will, it is critical to ensure that beneficiary designations for any qualified plan (401(k), IRA, pension, annuity, insurance policy, etc.) are made payable to the third party SNT and not to the disabled child outright. Failure to do so could result in disastrous consequences such as causing the child to become ineligible for valuable governmental benefit programs. You will also want to speak to your tax advisor regarding any special needs planning you undertake. They will be able to provide necessary advice regarding the tax laws surrounding the gifting or bequeathing of various assets to a loved one. If you haven’t already done so, introduce all of your trusted advisors to one another to ensure that everyone is up to speed with the latest planning taking place. Lastly, if a third party SNT is created, it’s extremely important to consider the use of a professional trustee to manage the trust on behalf of a loved one. While many individuals’ first thought is to name a family member or friend as trustee, there are almost always significant drawbacks to that decision. SNTs are extremely complex, and the laws governing them are frequently changing. Individual family member/friend trustees almost never have the necessary time, experience, expertise, objectivity or energy to devote to the role of trustee, and they may not even be available to serve as trustee because of death or disability. A corporate (professional) trustee is not faced with these issues. In this age of rising health care costs, it becomes even more critical to plan NOW for the care of loved ones with special needs. Assembling a team of professionals ahead of time will ensure peace of mind for the family, as they will know that there is a proper plan in place to care for their loved one when they are no longer able to do so.

Thyroid ThyroidDisorders DisordersAnd and Surgery Surgery What is a thyroid disorder? Diseases of the thyroid gland are very common, affecting millions of Americans. The most common thyroid problems are: • An overactive gland, called hyperthyroidism (e.g., Graves disease, toxic adenoma or toxic nodular goiter) • An underactive gland, called hypothyroidism (e.g., Hashimotos thyroiditis) • Thyroid enlargement due to overactivity (as in Graves disease) or from under-activity (as in hypothyroidism). An enlarged thyroid gland is often called a goiter. Patients with a family history of thyroid cancer or who had radiation therapy to the head or neck as children for acne, adenoids, or other reasons are more prone to developing thyroid malignancy. What are thyroid nodules? Thyroid nodules are very common, occurring in 15-65 How is a diagnosis made? percent of people of all ages. surgical treatment is recommended. Nodules that are suspicious or cancerous on biopsy require surgical removal. Large nodules are often removed for a number of reasons. Benign large thyroid nodules may cause pressure symptoms in the throat or cause difficulty swallowing. Thyroid nodules that produce excess thyroid hormone may also need to be removed. Lastly, some thyroid nodules are large enough that standard diagnostic approaches prevent accurate assessment of the possibility of cancer and, therefore, need to be surgically removed. Thyroid surgery is an operation to remove part or all of the thyroid gland. It is performed in the hospital and general anesthesia is usually required. Typically, the operation removes the lobe of the thyroid gland containing the suspicious nodule or lump. A frozen section (immediate microscopic reading) may be used to determine if the rest of the thyroid gland should be removed during the same surgery. Based on the result of the frozen section, the decision will be made in the operating room if removal of any remaining thyroid tissue is necessary. Dr. Peters will discuss these options with you preoperatively. As an alternative, Dr. Peters may choose to remove only one lobe and wait for the final pathology report before deciding if the remaining lobe needs to be removed. If a malignancy is identified in this way, he may recommend that the remaining lobe of the thyroid be removed at a second procedure. What happens after thyroid surgery? The surgery usually takes 2-3 hours, and most patients are watched carefully in the hospital overnight. The pain is often minimal, and most patients take four to seven days off from work.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIMS – WHEN YOU NEED A LAWYER When bad things happen to good people, a lawyer’s services are necessary to ensure that you get the most compensation for your injuries. Why do I need a personal injury attorney?

Experience and expertise. Personal injury attorneys often have: • Trial experience (whereas other types of attorneys may not); • Negotiation experience; • An in-depth understanding of medical diagnoses and processes associated with personal injuries; and • An in-depth understanding of negligence law and other torts.

Factors to consider

When you begin the process of choosing a personal injury attorney, you will want to understand what makes a good lawyer. One important factor is trial experience. While not all cases go to trial and most settle out of court, you will want to hire an attorney who is a certified trial attorney and is not intimidated by a trial.

Know the facts of your case and have as much documentation as possible.

Before meeting with an attorney for an initial consultation, write down and know as many facts of your case as possible. The attorney may want to see any or all of the following: • Police or incident report • Medical documents, including bills, diagnoses, and test results • Pictures of the location of the incident or accident, damage, injuries or anything from the scene • Written statements from witnesses • Your insurance policy (if applicable)

Feel comfortable with the attorney

You are going to be spending a good amount of time with your lawyer, so you want to make sure they make you feel comfortable, will be available to answer any questions you may have, and will have a positive outlook about your case.

TESTIMONIAL “I am a long-time client of Kevin Riordan. Among other things, he has represented my mother for a fall and me in a worker’s compensation case, with great results. Sometimes the process gets complicated, but I feel confident when he is battling on our side because I know he has a great reputation as a trial attorney.”— William H., Manahawkin

.

Size Matters

Law offices range in size from sole practitioners to firms with hundreds of lawyers. While large firms may be more attractive, there are undeniable benefits to hiring a smaller firm.

Small Firm

Small firms can be an excellent choice and so you may want to consider retaining one if it makes sense, given the nature of your legal problem. Although no two firms are the same, potential benefits of hiring a small firm include: • A more direct working relationship with your lawyer.

Your case is not going to get lost in the shuffle.

• Lower fees and costs. It is not unusual for a small firm to charge less than a big firm might charge for doing the same type of work. • A more informal working relationship. You are likely to get to know everyone in your lawyer’s office if he or she is with a small firm. This can lead to a better working relationship, which may make you feel more comfortable.

With over 20 years of trying cases in New Jersey, you can rest assured that if you hire Kevin Riordan he will not settle for less than the fair amount. All About Hyponatremia

I

f you are dealing with any type of kidney issue, then a visit to Dr Fatima Asghar at the Hypertension and Kidney Group is highly encouraged. Since 1983, this highly professional practice has been providing topnotch treatment to their patients suffering from kidney disease, kidney transplants, and hypertension.

Dr. Asghar has over 25 years of experience working to provide an improved quality of life for her patients. Dr. Asghar is affiliated with Community Medical Center as well as Monmouth Medical Center in Lakewood. One of the conditions they treat is Hyponatremia. Sodium is a critical electrolyte and helps to regulate the amount of water that is in and around your cells. It also helps to maintain normal blood pressure and regulates your body’s fluid balance. There can be a variety of factors which contribute to its onset, from an underlying medical condition, to even drinking too much water. This can actually cause the sodium in your body to become diluted. When this occurs, your body water levels rise and your cells begin to swell. Drinking excessive amounts of water can cause low sodium by overpowering the kidneys ability to excrete water. Because you would normally lose sodium through sweat, drinking too much water during any type of endurance activity, specifically a marathon can also dilute the actual sodium content of your blood. Another contributing factor is Addison’s disease, which is Adrenal gland insufficiency. This affects your adrenal glands ability to produce hormones that help maintain your body’s balance of sodium, potassium, and water. Older adults may have more potential for hyponatremia especially if they take certain medications, for example diuretics, or have other chronic conditions.

Nephrology

If you suspect that there is something wrong with your kidneys, it’s best to act now before it’s too late. Some common disorders we treat include hypertension (high blood pressure), kidney stones, chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury, hematuria, proteinuria dialysis, and more.

When it comes to Hyponatremia, it is imperative that you resolve the underlying condition. Depending on the cause, you may need to cut back on how much you drink, while other cases will require you to get intravenous electrolyte solutions and medications. There are a multitude of symptoms and signs that you could be suffering from this condition which include: • Nausea and vomiting • Headache • Confusion • Loss of Energy • Fatigue • Seizures • Muscle Weakness

Interestingly enough, most patients with hyponatremia are actually asymptomatic. True symptoms will not appear until the plasma sodium level drops below a certain number. In the most severe cases, neurologic and gastrointestinal symptoms can occur. As the sodium level decreases, the risk of seizures and coma come into play. Other lifestyle factors that contribute to the condition include medications like water pills, antidepressants, and some pain medications. These can all interfere with normal hormonal kidney processes that keep sodium concentrations within the healthy range. The most critical thing you can do is educate yourself and understand the condition in order to safeguard against it. Be sure to always consult with your doctor before taking any new medications. If you do have a demanding exercise session, consider drinking a sports beverage that contains electrolytes. Finally, although drinking water is vital don’t overdo it.

Internal Medicine

If you are looking for treatment for non-kidney related diseases, please call us! Our physicians also practice Internal Medicine and can treat a variety of diseases including acute respiratory infections, chest pain, fatigue, diabetes, and more.

Pediatric Services Tips For Preparing Your Child To Go Back To School

24

Written By Meg Czaszynski, PT, DPT Seashore Pediatric Therapy Center.

It is that time of year: the ever-hectic back-toschool time when many of us start to run around preparing our children for the new school year. There are school supplies to purchase, sports to train for, homework, and planning exactly how to schedule it all in while still leaving a little time for family and fun. As a physical therapist and a mom, there are a couple of things that I pay special attention to this time of year. Picking the Right Backpack For my children, picking the right backpack is all about the aesthetics. However, as parents, we have a couple of other factors to consider to ensure our children’s backpacks are safe and appropriate for their growing bodies. First, the fit. Not every backpack is made to fit every child. When helping your child choose a backpack, you want to make sure that it fits their body size well, hugging the contours of their back so that as much of their back as possible is in contact with the backpack. The width of the backpack should not be wider than their shoulders. To calculate the proper length of the backpack, measure from the top of their shoulder blade down to their waist. A good backpack also should include double padded straps to distribute the weight evenly across your child’s shoulders, and a chest and/or hip strap to evenly distribute the weight of the backpack across their hips and chest. Once you have the fit down, the next part gets trickier…the weight. Research shows that children should carry no more than 10-15% of their body weight in their backpacks. When children carry more than 15% of their body weight in their backpack, it causes physiological and biomechanical adaptations, which increases children’s risk for musculoskeletal injury, discomfort, and fatigue. As parents, we want to be mindful of how much our kids are carrying and how their bodies are feeling. If the weight of their backpack is dictated by the structure and demands of their school day, it is appropriate to discuss your concerns with their teachers. You are your child’s best advocate. It is not typical or appropriate for a child to report frequent soreness, pain, or fatigue from their backpack. If it is a frequent occurrence, it may be time to follow up with your child’s pediatrician and a PT to take a look into what is going on and how it can be remedied.

Physical Activity Selection Much of my efforts as a parent are spent encouraging my children to be physically active throughout the school year and ensuring they get at least an hour of physical activity a day, as recommended by the

American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). When helping my children to choose their extracurricular activities, I encourage participation in a variety of physical experiences so they can discover what they like and what they don’t. Not every child is going to be a ‘team sport’ kid; however, that doesn’t mean that they can’t be healthy and active individuals. You just have to find what is fun and motivating for your child. I try to encourage children to pick one activity that will improve the strength in their core muscles, such as swimming, yoga, or gymnastics. Often I see children in PT who are active, but have re-occurring ankle, knee, or shoulder injuries, in part because their core and postural muscles are not as strong as they need to be.

Sleep It is so important that children get enough rest to be able to successfully make it through their day. Sleep is a restorative biological process that replenishes the body on all levels. Sleep deprivation results in reduced energy levels, a weakened immune system, decreased short-term memory, a lower threshold for stress, depressed mood, impaired wound healing, and higher instances of errors and accidents. It significantly affects a child’s academic performance and their ability to successfully participate in extracurricular activities. It has an even greater effect on children with sensory processing disorders or with autism spectrum disorders. We can often see a clear difference in an individual’s ability to self-regulate, motor plan, and problem solve when they are well rested compared to when they are not. Of course, getting your children to sleep isn’t always as easy as saying, “Okay! Bedtime!” However, it is well worth the effort of encouraging your child on to a schedule where they are getting an adequate amount of sleep for their age so they can successfully tackle whatever tasks the school day presents. If you notice that your child is getting adequate sleep, but is still having difficulty processing sensory input, motor planning, or successfully interacting with others, it may be appropriate to reach out to a physical, occupational, or speech therapist to try and problem solve what can be done to address those issues. At Seashore Pediatric Therapy Center, we are here to help and happy to work with you and your child to address any concerns in an effort to ensure that this is a healthy, happy and wonderful school year!

A Calling Of The Heart

Seashore Pediatric Therapy Center Makes Huge Impacts In The Lives Of Children For the therapists at Seashore Pediatric Therapy Center it’s all about helping families reach their absolute full potential. By utilizing a combination of a creative and progressive approach, they achieve results and create an environment full of opportunities. Play takes center stage for the occupational therapists and children have fun while “working” to develop their areas of weakness. Kayla Irwin, OT

Brielle Caucino CCC-SLP

OCW: What interested you about the field of Occupational Therapy?

OCW: What is the most rewarding part about your job?

KI: I was drawn to the field of

Occupational Therapy through a variety of personal and professional experiences, including coordinating and volunteering with an adaptive sports program for children with disabilities, working as a paraprofessional in a special education classroom, and seeing the positive impact that OT had for my grandmother diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

OCW: What is a typical day like for you?

KI: As a pediatric occupational therapist, I spend my day working in both

schools, as well as in the outpatient setting. A typical day at the clinic consists of reviewing previous documentation for the children I will be seeing that day, preparing any necessary materials or activities for sessions and evaluations, and ultimately helping children learn and improve on various skills to help them become more successful and independent in their daily roles and routines.

OCW: What is the most challenging part about your profession?

KI: The most challenging part of my profession is time management.

Sometimes there are multiple areas or skills to be addressed, making it critical to plan ahead to ensure I am providing the highest quality of care. It is also important to leave enough time to provide education to family members and to complete the necessary documentation.

OCW: What is the most rewarding part?

KI: The most rewarding part is working with the child and their family and

getting to see the excitement as they achieve their goals. I love to hear the joy and see the smiles when the children and their families share stories of their accomplishments with me.

OCW: How do you stay current with new developments made in your field?

KI: There are exciting discoveries and research studies being done every day, making it important to stay current in order to provide appropriate evidence-based practices. Being a member of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), working as an interdisciplinary team with other professions, as well as attending conferences and continuing education courses are ways I have worked to keep myself up to date. Some continuing education courses I have had the opportunity to complete throughout my profession include the Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) Approach to Feeding and the Zones of Regulation.

BC: Each day is satisfying in and of

itself. Watching patients succeed and be able to become confident in their own voice is highly rewarding. I especially enjoy working in a collaborative environment with other professionals, including physical and occupational therapists, who always want their patients to succeed in the same way that I do. It provides plenty of opportunities for camaraderie and support. I work in both a hospital based setting and at Seashore Pediatric Therapy Center and having experiences in both professional settings allows for me to provide the best treatment to individuals across their lifespan.

OCW: What are the ages of the children that you typically see?

BC: I see children from birth to 18 years old with a range of speech, language,

and swallowing disorders including: expressive/receptive language, articulation/ phonology, apraxia of speech, auditory processing, stuttering/fluency, pragmatic, dysphagia, cognition, and memory.

OCW: Please tell us about the PROMPT training and how it is effective.

BC: PROMPT stands for “Prompts for Restructuring Oral and Muscular

Phonetic Targets.” It is a holistic, tactile-kinesthetic approach to speech therapy. Essentially, it is used to restructure the speech production capabilities of children with a variety of communication and speech disorders. The program utilizes specific techniques based on touch pressure, proprioceptive, and tactile cues to help reshape the way the brain and mouth work together to articulate and produce speech. PROMPT is a hands-on approach and requires the involvement of a trained speech-language pathologist to administer treatments. I utilize the technique with all of my patients with a variety of speech-language difficulties including articulation, phonology, motor speech disorders, and fluency. Using tactile cues allows for patients to physically feel where sounds should be produced within the mouth.

OCW: What sets Seashore apart from other facilities like it?

The County Woman Magazine www.TheCountyWoman.com

BC: The stellar inter-professional relationship that we have

with other caregivers, including physical and occupational therapists really sets us apart. Our therapists are collaborative, compassionate, and have a mutual understanding of the challenges that families may face. There are many ways and endless possibilities to help a child and when we find success, there is nothing more rewarding. At Seashore, we understand that caring for children is not a business or job; it is a calling to the heart and mind to make a difference in the lives of all children.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Christine Ally, DDS, FICOI, FAGD Member, American Sleep and Breathing Academy Member, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine Qualified Dentist, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which a person stops breathing periodically throughout the night due to physical blockage of the airway. These stops in breathing usually last for around ten seconds and are often followed by snorts, gasps, or choking sounds as a person’s body fights to resume breathing again.

When you stop breathing during the night, your brain responds by partially waking to send signals to the respiratory system to work harder to get past the obstruction. This repeated stop in breathing is very detrimental to overall health and is linked to a number of medical conditions. These range from depression and sexual dysfunction to increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and premature cardiac death.

Appliances Available for Sleep Apnea

Before any treatment options can be determined, a sleep study must first be performed to determine the severity of one’s symptoms as it can have a direct influence on the recommended therapy. However, a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) should be treated and monitored by a trained clinician. There are various types of comfortable dental appliances which can be made by an experienced doctor such as Dr. Ally to treat OSA and improve patients’ health. For moderate to severe sleep apnea patients, most sleep professionals will recommend CPAP therapy as a first-line treatment option. For mild to moderate sleep apnea, a dental device is often the recommended therapy. Dental devices may also be recommended to be worn in conjunction with a CPAP device.

Who Qualifies for These Appliances?

• Patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea (not recommended for moderate to severe sleep apnea) • Patients with primary snoring (in absence of sleep apnea) • Patients who have tried and failed at CPAP therapy may qualify • Patients who were unsuccessful with or refused surgeries such as tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, craniofacial operations, or tracheostomy • In combination with CPAP device to help lower patient’s apnea/hypopnea index for more tolerable air pressure settings If you’re concerned you have sleep apnea, you should contact your physician to discuss or contact a highly trained dental professional to discuss treatment options. Dr. Ally at Shore Premier Dental Arts/Advanced Sleep and TMJ Center of New Jersey offers a complimentary consultation to discuss your concerns or treatment options. She is a highly trained and skilled clinician with extensive experience in treating OSA patients with oral appliances. Give us a call to see how we can help with your concerns.

NJ Neurosurgeon SpearGAME heads Effort to Enhance CHANGER! Comfort, Reduce Recovery Time for Stroke and Brain Aneurysm Patients Atlantic NeuroSurgical Specialists,

leaders in brain, spine and neurovascular

care and a proud partner of Altair Health, now accepts Aetna and Horizon

Dr. Paul Saphier from Atlantic NeuroSurgical Specialists says a patient’s wrist is the key to taking endovascular neurosurgery to the next level

Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.

What does the future of brain surgery for patients with strokes and aneurysms look like? According to Dr. Paul Saphier, a board-certified neurosurgeon at Atlantic NeuroSurgical Specialists – one of the largest neurosurgical practices in New Jersey and one of the most advanced in the country – in many cases, there won’t be a need for general anesthesia. And patients may be able to walk away 30 minutes after the procedure with nothing more than a compression bracelet around their wrist. “We’re actually doing this today by taking a radial approach to endovascular neurosurgery,” says Dr. Saphier, who performs hundreds of procedures per year. “With endovascular neurosurgery, neurosurgeons Atlantic NeuroSurgical Specialists’ can access – and treat – a brain aneurysm or rupture by navigating Dr. Paul Saphier is leading the through a blood vessel to deliver devices like coils and stents, rather than industry and taking endovascular performing open brain surgery. Neurosurgeons traditionally go through a neurosurgery to the next level. blood vessel in the upper thigh, but by using the radial artery in the wrist instead, we can take patient comfort to the next level and reduce recovery time.” The radial approach carries less risk of bleeding and improves patient comfort compared to the traditional transfemoral approach, which is when physicians advance their devices through the main artery in the thigh. Plus, instead of needing to stay off the leg to recover, patients can walk off the table after the procedure and be discharged in as little as 30 minutes. “Neither endovascular approach carries a significant risk of complications, but if we can reduce the risk even further and simultaneously make the experience faster and smoother for our patients, it’s our duty to deliver on that,” adds. Dr. Saphier. While radial access is widespread in the cardiology community for interventions like stenting and catheterization, it is not commonly used in neurosurgery. “This isn’t an indication of its efficacy,” notes Dr. Saphier. “Because the radial artery is so much smaller, the procedure requires a higher level of skill to perform. Even if a neurosurgeon is highly skilled, the traditional approach is very much the status quo and most physicians’ comfort level.” Dr. Saphier is such a strong proponent of radial artery access for neurosurgery that he is spearheading a physician-led study that will formally examine its benefits. “Since seeing how successful radial access has been with my patients – in terms of their outcomes and their satisfaction – I haven’t looked back. I’m energized to lead the industry forward on this front and to help more patients get the best treatment available.” If you’re interested in learning more about a radial approach to endovascular neurosurgery and how it can benefit you or a loved one, contact Dr. Saphier at ANS at 973-285-7800 or www.ansdocs.com. Atlantic NeuroSurgical Specialists (ANS) is New Jersey’s largest neurosurgical practice and one of the most advanced in the country. Since its founding in 1958, ANS has specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the nervous system. For more information, visit www.ansdocs.com.

Finding The Light At The End Of The Tunnel

he theme of this article is that you do have control over your debt; it’s just a matter of taking action. There is no hole too big or too difficult to dig out from underneath. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you take that first step: Don’t be afraid. I cannot tell you how many clients come into my office with unopened envelopes of credit card bills and mortgage statements. It’s a coping mechanism. If I don’t open the mail, then it is not a concern...it’s not real. Don’t be afraid of your position. It is what it is – it’s about how we are going to fix it that matters. Acknowledging the problem is an important first step. Communicate. Being in debt can be a very lonely feeling. We all want to pay our bills. It is a matter of pride. In fact, many of the people I help are current on their present obligations and have outstanding credit, but are overwhelmed with the amount in which they owe. Many of my clients feel isolated from their friends and family – even their spouse – because of trying to “keep up” an image or lifestyle that is simply no longer sustainable. Communicate with those who

matter and seek help. I can assure you, that you are not alone. Be proactive. There are solutions to any and all debt related problems. Every situation is unique and requires a different analysis based upon the specific circumstances pertaining to one’s assets and liabilities. No two cases are alike. The important thing to remember is that, unless you are proactive, nothing will change. I treat every consultation as an information session. It’s an opportunity for you to receive the information you need about bankruptcy and other debt solution options, and it is an opportunity for me to set a strategic course for helping a client find relief. I hope this article proved helpful in not giving up hope and trying to move forward. Like with this dream of Spring passing, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

What is this?

This is a surgical technique that is performed through very tiny incisions, only a few millimetres long. This is in contrast to traditional surgery performed through large incisions on the foot. Dr. Baskin offers this technique with advantages over open surgery. Much less soft tissue stripping and dissection is required to gain access to the bone in order to make the corrections. This may alleviate the need for wires, implants, or screws.

This may lead to:

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Open Surgery

• Reduced surgical time • Walking the same day in a surgical shoe. • Less damage to tissues • Less internal scarring • Minimal external scarring (sometimes stitches are not needed) • Less joint stiffness • Same day surgery • Quicker recovery time • Faster return to work and normal activities • No need for pins or implants in the toes • Possibly a better result

What conditions can be treated this way? • Bunions (hallux valgus) • Lumps, bumps, corns, calluses on or in between the toes. • Hammer toes • Metatarsalgia (pain under the balls of the toes) • Big toe arthritis (Cheilectomy for Hallux Rigidus) • Morton’s Neuroma • Plantar Fasciitis • Some aspects of flat feet surgery • Some aspects of ankle arthritis surgery • Diabetic ulcers most places on the foot

Can any surgeon perform this kind of surgery?

No. Very specific training in minimally invasive techniques are required and these training courses have restricted access. A new range of surgical tools, not normally used in traditional open surgery are used and these require a new set of technical skills in order to master the different surgical techniques. This requires training and experience. Not all foot and ankle surgeons perform minimally invasive foot surgery.

Is it for me?

Most people are eligible to have minimally invasive surgery, however it is not for everyone. Some deformities are too large to be corrected using minimally invasive techniques. A consultation with Dr. Baskin will allow you to discuss this in detail and decide which method of foot correction is appropriate for you. n

3D Mammography Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women. One in 8 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Each year it is estimated that over 252,710 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,500 women will die from the disease. This is why early detection is so important. With early detection, the five-year survival rate is nearly 100%. The latest weapon in the fight against breast cancer is 3D mammography (also known as breast tomosynthesis). This new technology has increased early detection over traditional mammograms, especially in women with dense breasts. Greater accuracy means better breast cancer detection.

Q: What is a 3D mammogram? How is it different from regular mammograms?

A: 3D mammogram--also called breast tomosynthesis--is one of the most advanced forms of breast cancer detection. It uses a very low level of radiation to take multiple pictures of the breast. The x-ray tube moves over the breast in an arc, capturing multiple images of each breast from different angles. A computer reconstructs these pictures to create a 3-dimensional picture of the breast. A regular mammogram takes a single picture of the breast.

Q: What is the advantage of 3D mammogram?

suspicious, patients need to be called back for additional views. The multiple images created by 3D mammograms have such increased accuracy that there is decreased need for this. On average 3D mammograms reduce callbacks by up to 40% compared to traditional mammograms. This means less radiation exposure, increased convenience for our patients, and more peace of mind.

Cancer in this breast is difficult to detect on this standard mammogram.

Q: What can I expect when having a 3D mammogram? A: The process of having a 3D

mammogram is the same as a conventional 2D exam. The technologist will position you, compress your breast, and take images from different angles. There’s no additional compression required, and it only takes a few extra seconds.

Q: Do insurance companies cover 3D mammograms?

Using 3D mammogram technology, the cancer was able to be clearly seen.

A: One of the challenges of interpreting mammograms is normal dense breast

A: Medicare, and many private insurers, cover 3D mammograms. In the past, not

Q: Is there increased radiation performing a 3D mammogram?

Toms River X-ray has been performing mammograms and serving the community for over 30 years. Our 3D mammogram is the latest on the market and has the most advanced technology. It is our mission to provide the very best for our patients. We thank you for trusting us with your health and the health of your loved ones. We look forward to offering you this significant advance in breast cancer screening.

tissue hiding breast cancer. Additionally, overlapping areas of normal dense breast tissue can look suspicious. This is why detecting breast cancer in women with dense breasts is more difficult. The 3-dimensional images of breast tomosynthesis help decrease the tissue overlap that can obscure cancers. It also helps distinguish normal overlapping breast tissue from breast cancer. Studies have shown that 3D mammograms significantly improve the detection of breast cancer, especially in women with denser breast tissue. It also picks up breast cancer at an earlier stage, which may be missed by traditional mammography. 3D mammograms find 20-65% more invasive breast cancers compared to traditional 2D mammograms, with an average increase of 41%.

all private insurance companies covered 3D mammograms. However, in August 2018, New Jersey enacted a mandate requiring nearly all the major health insurers to cover 3D mammograms.

A: Mammograms expose patients to very low levels of radiation. The level of

radiation exposure from a 3D mammogram is the same as that from a traditional mammogram. So a patient receives all the benefits without any increased risk. With traditional mammograms, when a radiologist finds an area that is

The Hol Truth Holistic Health Coach Jon Levine is on a mission to help his clients claim the health and happiness that is their God-given right. After a job in pharmaceutical sales and seeing his father die from Parkinson’s and brain cancer, it was time for him to create change when it comes to true health. With all the conflicting health info in our busy world, this passionate health nut will help guide you through the storm and into clear waters.

CW: What got you into health coaching?

I have always been interested in health, whether it was playing sports or figuring out the right nutrition for my body. I sold high blood pressure medication to over 131 doctors in Florida after college, and although it was a nice job financially, it didn’t feel good seeing what I saw. What we have in this country is a disease management model that isn’t working very well. Ironically, my father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and brain cancer at the same time. It’s very important to me to do something that I am very passionate about and enjoy, and make a difference in people’s lives.

CW: Tell me about your family.

I am a very lucky guy with a beautiful wife and three beautiful kids ages 10, 8 and 5. My wife, Anya, and I have been married for 13 years. We also have a guinea pig named Cherry and a white rabbit named Nibbles.

CW: What do you specialize in?

Nutrition drives a lot of what makes us healthy, but it’s really so much more than that. I believe strongly in looking at the whole person and that’s why my business name is the Hol Truth Health Coach. I deal with mind, body and soul.

CW: What is health to you?

Everyone is a unique individual with different needs and goals. I have to understand my client’s specific needs and address those needs appropriately. Some people need less stress while others need more sleep. Whatever it is, I am the guide on the side to help them reach their health goals.

CW: What is the best approach to health coaching?

You obviously have to have knowledge in a wide range of health topics. Mine being nutrition, but it’s asking high-mileage questions and active listening that comes before everything else. I don’t tell people what to do because that doesn’t work. Instead, I listen to what they are telling me they need.

CW: Tell me about your The Hol Truth Podcast with Jon Levine.

I have several friends who urged me to start a health podcast. I use a local studio called A Shared Universe in Eatontown and interview doctors, health experts and people who have reversed diseases through what I call lifestyle medicine. I carefully screen guests because I will only bring on people I believe in. I love it and it’s a lot of fun. The goal is to educate, empower and entertain.

CW: How do you help clients?

A good health coach is someone who truly cares and listens to their patients. When a patient feels safe and comfortable, they will open up and the healing process will begin. There is a root cause for every health ailment, and it’s my job to show compassion and help my clients uncover what their health problem stems from. We work as a team and make it happen.

CW: Describe your coaching style.

Positive, Positive, Positive. Energy is contagious. If I’m in a bad mood, then my client will take on that negative energy. If I’m upbeat and passionate, they will know they are in good hands.

CW: Do you sell any products or supplements?

Yes, but I will not push them on people unless they are interested. Quality supplements have a place in our lives because of the mineral depletion in our soil. I have partnered with Shaklee because they are pure, safe, proven products that have been around for over 60 years. They have an in-house team of PhD’s and scientists who perform over 100,000 quality tests each year and have over 135 scientific papers published to date. I use the products myself and they make a big difference in how I feel, so I’m comfortable recommending them to others.

THIS IS NOT A 500 CALORIE DIET!

Make Fall A Time For A Healthier, Better You Written by Jill Houston, Clinical Director, Weight Loss Specialits

As I write this it is pushing 100 degrees outside and you probably wish the cool Fall weather was here! Problem is if you haven’t lost weight this summer, when you have more opportunity to be active and outdoors, it’s not going to be any easier once you retreat indoors during the colder months – unless you get a better understanding of how your body works and how it impacts your weight gain and your weight loss.

So, before you put your kids on the school bus and do a “Made it Through Another Summer” victory dance, please take time out for yourself NOW and start shedding those pounds for a healthier, better-feeling you…new body, new fashions, better life! Your hypothalamus is a vital part of the brain, which controls all automatic functions of the body including breathing, heartbeat, digestion and the complex functions of the endocrine system. One of the many functions of the endocrine system is regulation and control of hormones that impact your metabolism. That busy, stressful life you’ve been living – your endocrine system will release high levels of the stress hormone cortisol in response to it. Cortisol not only increases your appetite, but it also makes you crave foods high in fat and sugar. Talk about a double whammy! This means that adding a few

simple, stress-reducing activities into your routine will help any weight loss program. Here are a few ideas: • Walk 10 minutes a day • Find a quiet place to meditate • Get 8 hours of restful sleep • Enjoy a weekly therapeutic massage As we age, Mother Nature plays a cruel trick on women. Estrogen levels drop and metabolism slows down. As a result, women lose muscle and gain fat, especially around the middle. That’s where a diet that resets your metabolism, like HCG, comes in handy. HCG has another distinct advantage – it helps the body to get rid of the “abnormal” fat and preserves muscle. HCG appears to act on the hypothalamus, signaling the body to release stored fat into the bloodstream, where it is then available to be used by the cells for nourishment. This alone will not cause weight loss – you will need to reduce your food intake. This forces the body to use the mobilized fat from the bloodstream. The HCG diet is balanced, unlike many “fad” diets. A vast majority of clients report not feeling hungry, feeling in control, and having lots of energy. Perhaps most appealing for busy professionals, exercise is not a mandatory part of the program. In fact, strenuous activity is avoided until you are finished with the HCG regimen Michael Nagy, Post Weight Loss and are back on a regular diet.

• Amazing results in the first week • Lose 1/2 pound per day and sometimes more • Easy to make recipes • For Men and Women!

Hypnosis for Women Professional Hypnosis & Coaching Rhoda Kopy, Director 1541 Rt. 37 East, Suite E Toms River, NJ 08753 732-270-0080 www.HypnoForWomen.com

Health & Wellness A Safe, Natural Way to De-Stress, Relax, and Gain Control of Your Life We all feel stressed at times, but too much stress can wear us down and take the joy out of life. Fortunately, as a society, we’re gravitating toward

more natural, holistic approaches as a way to improve well-being. “I don’t want to have to take drugs to deal - hypnosis with stress” is a comment often heard by practitioners. So it’s not surprising that more people are using hypnosis / coaching as a way to manage stress, and improve their ability to relax the mind and body. The tools and techniques acquired in several sessions can be used for a lifetime – leading to a greater sense of optimism, the ability to handle challenges, improved health, and better immune system functioning. If you feel that you’re someone who stresses and worries a lot, know that there are steps you

can take to manage that. There are many factors that determine how we respond to stress; fortunately, we can change and become more adept at calming down, and effectively handling challenging people and situations.

-

Maybe you’re someone who normally tends to manage stress fairly well, but have a particular issue causing undue stress – like an upcoming

presentation, performance block, testing fear, concern about flying, driving discomfort, worry about medical / dental procedures or health conditions, etc. Whether stress is more global in nature or related to a specific challenge, hypnosis and coaching can help.

If you identify with one or several of the following, you would likely benefit from this approach:

Make Your Mind Work FOR You – Instead of Against You! Rhoda Kopy is a nationally certified consulting hypnotist and wellness coach, with specialty certification in complementary medical hypnotism. She earned a B.S. degree in Biomedical Communications from Richard Stockton College of N.J., has an academic background in nursing, and 20+ years’ experience in community health education and coaching. Rhoda adheres to strict ethical standards of the National Guild of Hypnotists.

• Often feeling jumpy, tense, irritable, angry, super-sensitive • Constantly worrying about all the “what-ifs” • Expecting terrible things to happen • Feeling overwhelmed, pulled in a million directions • Feeling foggy, lacking clarity • Having trouble making decisions or solving problems • Difficulty sleeping • Dealing with muscle tension, jaw clenching, etc.

Hypnosis For Women ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀

Weight Control Smoking Cessation Relaxation/Comfort Fear Release

• Engaging in unhealthy coping habits, like overeating, junk food eating, excessive drinking, nail biting, etc. More than just training the mind and body to relax deeply, this approach allows you to identify the issues causing stress and deal with them effectively. Most practitioners provide recordings for reinforcement, as well as training in self-hypnosis, which is extremely empowering. When deep relaxation is used to induce a hypnotic state (which is actually a state of focused concentration), there are many physical benefits, including:

• Muscle relaxation • Lowered blood pressure and pulse rate • A slowing of brain wave activity • Subtle changes in breathing

After several sessions – and with practice – the vast majority of clients enjoy:

• Greater feelings of well-being • Improved sleep quality • Improved clarity and problem-solving abilities • Higher productivity • Better ability to focus, concentrate, recall • Improved physical comfort • Emotional calm This approach works best for people who are motivated to change, believe that with the right tools and techniques they are capable of changing, and understand they need to be a partner in the process.

For a Free Phone Consultation, call me at 732-270-0080. Integrating hypnotic techniques and coaching paves the way for successful outcomes and boosts your sense of well-being.

Have You Had Your Annual Mammogram? Breast Cancer Awareness Month

(BCAM), also referred to in America as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer. NBCAM was founded in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries (now part of AstraZeneca, producer of several anti-breast cancer drugs). The aim of the NBCAM from the start has been to promote mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer. In 1993 Evelyn Lauder, Senior Corporate Vice President of the Estée Lauder Companies founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and established the pink ribbon as its symbol, though this was not the first time the ribbon was used to symbolize breast cancer. In the fall of 1991, the Susan G. Komen Foundation had handed out pink ribbons to participants in its New York City race for breast cancer survivors. A variety of events around the world are organized in October, including walks and runs, and the pink illumination of landmark buildings. In the United States, the National Football League promotes breast cancer awareness by incorporating pink on and off the field, and comic strip artists use pink on one day in October. (1)

What are the key statistics about breast cancer?

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers. About 1 in 8 (12%) women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. The American Cancer Society’s estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2014 are: • About 232,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women. • About 62,570 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer). • About 40,000 women will die from breast cancer After increasing for more than 2 decades, female breast cancer incidence rates began decreasing in 2000, then dropped by about 7% from 2002 to 2003. This large decrease was thought to be due to the decline in use of hormone therapy after menopause that occurred after the results of the Women’s Health Initiative were published in 2002. This study linked the use of hormone therapy to an increased risk of breast cancer and heart diseases. Incidence rates have been stable in recent years. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer. The chance that breast cancer will be responsible for a woman’s death is about 1 in 36 (about 3%). Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1989, with larger decreases in women younger than 50. These decreases are believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, as well as improved treatment. At this time there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. (This includes women still being treated and those who have completed treatment.) (3)

How can National Breast Cancer Awareness Month make a difference? We can use this opportunity to spread the word about steps women can take to detect breast cancer early. Take action to increase awareness about breast cancer and breast cancer screenings. • Ask doctors and nurses to speak to women about the importance of getting screened for breast cancer. • Encourage women ages 40 to 49 to talk with their doctors about when to start getting mammograms. • Organize an event to talk with women ages 50 to 74 in your community about getting mammograms every 2 years. • Display posters about breast cancer screening in your organization’s break room. • Ask health professionals from your local hospital or clinic to share information about mammograms and early detection with your employees or members. • Distribute materials about breast cancer screening at a local health fair. • Partner with local women’s organizations, community groups, and senior centers to reach women ages 40 and older with important information on breast cancer screening. • Host a breast cancer walk with your organization’s members. Interview with Dr. Nina Paonessa An Expert in Offering Concentrated Expertise in All Areas of Colon and Rectal Surgery As a board-certified general surgeon and proctologist, Dr. Nina Paonessa believes in patientcentered care and preserving each patient’s independence, well-being and dignity. Specializing in colon and rectal surgery, Dr. Paonessa has been in practice for over 15 years. She completed her undergraduate education at Siena College in Loudonville, NY with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Magna Cum Laude, and a member of the honor society, Alpha Kappa Alpha. After completing her undergraduate studies, Dr. Paonessa completed medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, PA and completed her colon and rectal surgery fellowship at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA. CW: When did you first decide to become a surgeon? Dr. Paonessa: I discovered my love for the specialty during my second year of general surgery residency. I began to notice how patient outcomes varied based upon the training/skill of the surgeon. Colorectal surgery is a field in which specialized training truly impacts patient outcome. For example, in certain cases, the difference between patients having a permanent colostomy versus bowel continuity after colorectal resection is dependent upon the skill/training of the surgeon. Additionally, I had the privilege of doing a one-month rotation on the colorectal surgery service of Dr. Douglas Wong at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. It was here that I truly fell in love with the specialty of colorectal surgery. CW: What do you like the most about being a colorectal surgeon? Dr. Paonessa: For me, the most rewarding part is when I can make a positive impact on a patient’s quality of life and well-being, whether it be curing a patient of colon or rectal cancer and restoring bowel continuity, to ridding a patient of their hemorrhoid symptoms, to freeing a patient from the social isolation caused by their symptoms of fecal incontinence. A fringe benefit of my specialty is that I have the privilege of meeting so many wonderful and unique individuals. It is truly rewarding working with each of my patients.

CW: How would you describe your practice’s philosophy? Dr. Paonessa: In my practice, my staff and I share the same philosophy of “the patient comes first.” No matter what if it is benign or malignant disease for which a patient is coming to the office, we understand that it is a stressful and oftentimes an embarrassing situation for them. In my office, each patient’s privacy and dignity is preserved and respected to the utmost degree. We realize that just because we take care of colorectal problems every day, does not mean that patients are used to dealing with these issues. CW: What are the most common reasons why a patient would schedule an appointment at your practice? Dr. Paonessa: Men and women of all ages schedule appointments at my office for many reasons. These include hemorrhoids, fissures, colorectal cancer screenings via colonoscopy, treatment of colorectal cancers/including laparoscopic surgery, squamous cell carcinoma of the anus, fecal incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction. CW: Tell us a success story that you have experienced over the years. Dr. Paonessa: We have had many success stories over the last 15 years. One of my favorite success stories is that of a woman who was hospitalized for perforated sigmoid diverticulitis with a large intraabdominal abscess. I was requested to see her as a second opinion as the first surgeon proposed immediate surgery consisting of sigmoid colon resection and end colostomy. After careful history and physical exam and review of her CT scans, I proposed a plan of bowel rest, IV antibiotics and percutaneous drainage of the abscess. This allowed for the abscess to reduce in size to merely a small cavity. The patient was eventually taken to surgery, during which she had a sigmoid colon resection and colorectal anastomosis, without even a temporary stoma (bag). She recovered uneventfully and was able to return to work. CW: describe some of your favorite leisure activities. Dr. Paonessa: Outside of being a surgeon, I enjoy spending time with my family. I also enjoy cooking and trying new recipes, reading, dancing and spending time at the beach.

CW: What is the most difficult part of being a colorectal surgeon? Dr. Paonessa: Explaining to a patient about their diagnosis of cancer is the most difficult part of being a colorectal surgeon. Even in many cases in which the cancer can be cured, dealing with a diagnosis of cancer is stressful road ahead of them a bit easier.

Back To School Time Already? Health Problems That Spread At School Kids should learn to share, right? But, gee whiz…. When it comes to bugs and other contagious health problems in school, does your kid have to get everything that’s passed around? Whether kids are packed into a classroom or messing around on the playground, they do tend to share lots of health p problems in n should you school. What can you do about it? And when be concerned? Here are a few things to thinkk about. Does head lice top your list of concerns?

ust Although these creepy insects might disgust you, it may help to know that they don’t cause diseases or other health problems – other than maybe a red, rashlike reaction. Of course, that doesn’t mean you want to ignore them since they spread really easily. Follow up with the doctor if your child complains of an itchy scalp or you catch sight of tiny white eggs firmly attached at hair roots. These are often confused with dandruff. Your child’s doctor may prescribe a treatment and other overthe-counter (OTC) shampoos or rinses. Follow ow directions closely and be sure to ask me if you ou have 1 any questions . Viral Infections And Other Diseases

Viral infections such as chicken pox are common, too. Many are contagious before skin lesions appear. Be sure to keep your child home until the sixth day after the rash appears unless all lesions are dry and crusted over. To prevent this infection, have your child vaccinated.1 Fifth disease is another viral disease. It causes a lacy rash on arms and redness on cheeks that looks like the result of a well-placed slap. Unless your child feels too sick, there’s no need to stay home. That’s because the disease only spreads before symptoms appear. However, tell the school so female employees of childbearing age can be notified. Fifth disease can severely hurt a developing fetus.1

Although there are many kinds of hepatitis, hepatitis A is the most common type in children. This virus is in blood and bowel movements, so hand washing is really important to prevent its spread. A child with hepatitis A should stay home until a week after the onset of illness and until any jaundice (yellowed skin) disappears. Another disease spread through bodily fluids is HIV/AIDS. Although it can cause anxiety among parents, casual physical contact – such as hugging, remember that casu hands, or sharing a glass – does not transfer this holding hand virus.1 Colds And Flus

Th there’s the run-of-the mill cold and flu. Then, Deciding whether or not to D ssend your child to school can be a challenge. General rule of thumb? If there’s a fever, keep ‘em home – until the fever’s been gone for at least 24 hours.2 If there’s no fever, more than likely it’s a cold and it’s okay to go to school. When in doubt, check with yyour child’s doctor. And, don’t forget the flu va vaccine, which is recommended for everyone six months and older.3

Stop by or call Jersey Shore Pharmac Pharmacy, 609-660-1111, and I can advise you o on the best way to keep your child comfortable while the cold or flu runs its course. I can also give you a brief overview of prescription or OTC treatments for the more common childhood viral infections. Sources 1. Women’s History Toni Morrison: Literary Legend

It’s not what you say but how you say it. A writer has the ability to captivate minds, young and old, and allows us to escape into a literary world of our own, even if for a brief period of time. It is easy to take for granted the amount of time, energy and emotional exhaustion that goes into writing a book. We order on Pbs.com. Amazon with the click of a button and some may even venture into a bookstore. It is not until we are immersed into the storyline and end up emotionally exhausted from a book’s ending that we can even attempt to fully understand our writer. This publication is dedicated to Toni Morrison, who was a literary legend, editor and professor with a twist of trailblazing depicting the lives of African Americans. Born with the name Chloe Anthony Wofford on February 18, 1931 in Lorain, Ohio to George and Ramah Wofford, Chloe was the second child of four in a family who came from victims of slavery. Chloe would later change her name to Toni as a pen name to identify herself in her writings. Toni was encouraged to read as a young child, and it has been reported that when she entered into an integrated school, she was one of the few NYTIMES.com who had the ability to read, which was not typical for an African American child in the 1930s and 1940s. Toni was privileged to graduate from high school and attend Howard University. After Toni completed her undergraduate degree, she continued on to obtain a Master’s degree from Cornell University. Toni continued her passion for the literary arts through her teaching, first at Texas Southern University, and then she returned to her alma mater to teach English at Howard University. Toni married Harold Morrison in 1958. Together they had two children. It would be only a few short years before Toni would enter into the struggles of single motherhood. Toni’s husband, Harold, was originally from Jamaica and he returned to his home in 1963, leaving Toni with her firstborn and another on the way. Toni, alone with a toddler and pregnant, decided to return to her home in Ohio to live with her family. It would not be long before Toni was back on her feet. After a year living at home, Toni relocated to Syracuse, New York Cnn.com to work for a textbook publisher as a senior editor before moving on to work for Random House. Toni did not only work full time as a mother of two children, she worked full time writing novels and essays, and published her first novel in 1970, entitled The Bluest Eye. By 1977 Toni had published another book, entitled Song of Solomon, which put her among the elite to have received the National Book Critics Circle Award. Toni did not stop there. In 1988 she won the Pulitzer Prize and the American Book Award for her writing in Beloved. Beloved not only was recognized as a best seller, it would later become a movie with the amazing Oprah Winfrey in the cast.

Cnn.com

In 1993 Toni received the Nobel Prize for Literature, and in 1996 she was awarded the National Endowment for the Humanities, along with another honorable recognition that included the National Book Foundation’s Medal of Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. In 2012 Toni received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama, which is the nation’s highest civilian honor. President Obama described Toni Morrison as “one of our nation’s most distinguished storytellers.” Toni’s writings depicted struggles of African American females and mothers along with the trials and tribulations of African American children and, most notably, slavery. Toni wrote fiction and non-fiction along with writing librettos (opera). Toni’s amazing ability to make her characters come alive in her writings allows readers to relate to a world that one can only imagine, and the books’ characters have made lasting impressions on the many who have been faithful to Morrison’s work. Toni Morrison passed away on August 5, 2019 at the young age of 88. Her legacy will continue to live on through her literary works that will continue to provoke readers to think outside the box. Although society is littered with technology, there is nothing better than being able to physically turn the pages of a captivating novel as we anxiously anticipate what will happen next. Through her literary talent, Toni Morrison has given us hope in the face of adversity, has displayed amazing resilience and strength in the face of darkness, and has gifted society with characters that we want bring home to dinner or offer a hug through her ability to make her readers all feel part of the story. In closing, as a final farewell to Toni Morrison, I encourage the readers of this publication to write your own story! Equalrights.org

Community Will You Be The Voice For A Child In Need? Abused and neglected children need you to be their voice

Everyday citizens like you can make an enormous difference in the lives of Ocean County’s foster children. Are you ready to become a hero? Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Ocean County is a nonprofit organization that works with the abused and neglected children placed in foster care. Our organization enlists everyday men and woman - just like you - to become CASA volunteers. Our CASA volunteers are various ages, have many ethnic backgrounds and different educational histories. As one of our volunteers, you will form a special relationship with your CASA child. CASA volunteers interact with the child, family members, social workers, healthcare providers, teachers and other relevant individuals to become a knowledgeable advocate for the child’s needs.

No child should ever feel that they are alone and without a voice. A CASA volunteer works to ensure that a foster child’s needs are recognized and their best interests are considered.

Call our office today to become a volunteer or sponsor a child.

Women Of Ocean County Virginia A. Mensah M.D., FACOG Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey Dr. Virginia Mensah is a board certified specialist in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Born in Indiana but raised in New Jersey, she always felt a strong connection to the Garden State. She proudly completed her bachelor’s degree in Genetics and Microbiology at Rutgers University. She then received her medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and went on to complete her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Hospital. She completed her fellowship training at the Women and Infants Hospital of Brown University, with top specialists providing infertility care. Throughout her education and in part due to her love of genetics, she developed a passion for women’s reproductive health and fertility concerns. This passion led her to this career as a fertility specialist, where she assists couples in their family-building goals. Dr. Mensah is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Her clinical interests include in vitro fertilization, recurrent pregnancy loss, and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. In her free time, Dr. Mensah enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, traveling, and painting. For more information, call 732-240-3000 or visit www.FertilityNJ.com.

Patricia A. Gomez Medical Office Manager, Be Well Women’s Health Patricia Ann Gomez’s passion for healthcare started with her father’s illness when she was young. That experience and subsequent loss both broke her heart and sparked her interest in medicine. Her older sister worked as a home health aide and she would sometimes accompany her to visit her clients. These visits solidified her passion for helping people. By the age of 19, she was working as a Certified Nursing Assistant and subsequently became a Certified Medical Assistant. She started working as a medical assistant in women’s health and within four years had worked her way up to office manager. Having an aunt who is a breast cancer survivor and a cousin who lost the fight with ovarian cancer has made her an advocate for preventative screening. She is currently at Be Well Women’s Health while pursuing her nursing degree. As the office manager, she challenges her staff and sets a high bar from the initial patient interaction. Creating a comfortable and trusting office environment is critical for a meaningful patient experience. When asked, “If you could be any animal, what would it be and why?” she states she would be an owl because they are majestic and exude wisdom, plus they get to see the world from above, a different perspective. Sometimes changing your perspective is all you need to navigate an impossible situation. She currently resides in Galloway, NJ. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and spending time with her family. For more information, call 609-383-4042 or visit www.bewellgyn.com.
