~ UUANJ Welcomes Urologist Dr. Michael Nazmy Jr. ~ An Interview With Dr. Nazmy University Urology Ever since he was a young boy, Dr. Michael Nazmy had always been intrigued by Associates of New Jersey isolating a problem and working to repair it. him to a career in medicine. However, it was when he became a volunteer EMT that his interest in people and the human body really took flight. He adds, “That early experience helped me see how medicine is done on a common sense level and what it really looks like to go to a patient’s home, stabilize them, load them onto an ambulance and bring them to a hospital for a higher level of care.” He also credits working as an EMT with showing him a more humanistic view of the medical field. Dr. Nazmy eventually chose to specialize in Urology; a specialty that deals with a broad area around the urinary system. Urologists perform surgery on the kidneys, bladder, urinary system, female pelvis and male reproductive system.

What attracted you to the field of urology?

This is a field that combines the worlds of medicine and surgery, often referred to as “surgical subspecialties.” I chose urology because it allows for a range of patients, from young to old, male to female, from healthy to sick, and a range of surgeries, from minor to quite major. None of the other subspecialties offer such a vast variety, with the chance to actually resolve problems with surgery, rather than just treat them with medications.

Briefly describe the type of surgery you perform.

I perform the full range of Urologic surgeries, however, I am fellowship trained in minimally invasive surgery including laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Robotic surgeries involve making small incisions in the body through which cameras and surgical tools are placed. The surgery is performed by “remote control” a few feet away from the patient’s body. It allows magnified vision, true 3D vision inside the body, and wrist motion replication. All of these factors increase precision and in certain surgeries, decrease bleeding. The robotic approach has revolutionized major surgery; in most situations longer incisions equals longer healing time. Offering a patient multiple small incisions, like those in laparoscopic and robotic surgery, may dramatically decrease recovery time.

What is the most challenging part of your job?

~ Interview with Mukaram Gazi, MD ~ The challenges facing physicians today seem to be multiplying very rapidly. Unfortunately, our medical system is heavily biased toward helping the bottom lines of insurers, pharmaceutical companies and hospital organizations. Instead, the focus should be on improving actual access to care, quality of care, and keeping reimbursements reasonable for physicians. The health care landscape is quickly changing and our responsibilities as physicians to advocate for patients will bebecome ever increasing. I am extremely confident in my and my medical you involved in the field ofteam urology? training; it’s the bureaucracy that challenges all physicians today.
