‘THE BIG TALK’: When Should You Have It? Long gone are the days of diapers, formula, and baby foods. Fast approaching are the dreaded “teenage years.” “Watch out, hold onto your parental hats, it is going to be a fast and bumpy ride” may all be appropriate descriptive terms. Yes, our children are approaching puberty.

Puberty is a time of significant physical, emotional, and psycho-social changes for children. These changes may cause confusion, stress and a host of other issues in a child. As you, the reader, progress through this article, keep this ONE THING IN MIND - BE PATIENT, BE PATIENT, and BE PATIENT. As a parent, this stage is going to be as difficult, if not more difficult, for you than your son or daughter. You, the parent, are your kid’s best asset. It is your job to teach, advise, counsel and, most importantly, listen to your son or daughter. You may or may not like what you hear. Try not to be angry or upset. Keep your child close to you and maintain open lines of communication. Puberty starts at varied ages; some start early, some late. Some develop quickly, others develop slowly. There is no hard and fast rule for this. Boys tend to take after their dads and the males in their family. Consider other family members and the ages for puberty. This may give you a clue as to when your own son or daughter will start puberty. From a medical perspective, doctors usually recommend that kids who start puberty before the age of eight-and-a-half to nine have a medical check-up. Also those who have not started puberty by their fourteenth or fifteenth birthday should see a doctor. It’s important to remember that starting early or late does not always mean there is something wrong. However, when there is something wrong, the problem can be treated by a doctor at an early age to allow the child to develop normally. Pimples, perspiration, and body hair growth. Most of us recall our first body changes. Hair growth in pubic areas, armpits, legs and arms is not too distressing to most kids. Just an aside, to dispel a popular rumor, shaving does not cause more hair growth. It may look like more but it is not. Shaving cuts the hair shaft, removing the tapered tip and exposing the wider shaft, so it looks like more hair growth. Body odor can start to occur during this period. Consider teaching the use of personal care products. For young women the body changes are more pronounced and noticeable. The enlargement of breast tissue begins in this stage, as well as an overall change in the contour of her body. This can be distressing to some women. The use of a bra or other supportive garments is really up to the individual. Support her in her decision to wear or not wear a bra. The next mountain is the start of her menses

or period. The onset of menses is the beginning of a variety of things. The most important one being this signifies her ability to become pregnant. Your daughter may wrestle with the decision to use a tampon or pad. Use of a tampon may disrupt the hymen. There are commercially available smaller tampons with plastic applicators that may offer her some advantages for ease of placement. Other issues may arise such as romantic feelings and sexual feelings. Young people often face questions about how to handle strong romantic and sexual feelings. This is an important time to really examine your own feelings, organize some basic concepts in your mind. And really try to talk with your child. They can use the guidance. At this time it is important to discuss the “what” and “how to” related to sexual activity. Kids today start at a young age. Don’t ignore the subject. It is important to discuss sexual contact, intercourse and, yes, birth control. Include in this safe sex practices and STD prevention. As a gynecologist, I have helped many parents with the talk. I have over the years developed the ability to effectively communicate with young women. This is a time of many emotions like confusion, anxiety, and excitement about growing up. It may also be a time when our kids have the “blues.” These ups and downs are very common in this age group. Part of the reason we have these feelings may be the new hormones our bodies are making. Our hormones are powerful substances and they can affect our emotions and our bodies. It takes our bodies and our emotions some time to adjust to these hormones. At times, all these changes are overwhelming. Your children may feel scared, uncertain, anxious or depressed. Be there to support, listen and at times talk to your children. You are their best asset. Try to keep them safe and out of trouble. In my own life, I have three children of my own. They are fast approaching at this age. I have started to have “the talk” with one of my own. It is really not as easy as one would think. When it comes down to it, this is a really difficult subject. It is stressprovoking for both my son and me. Kids can be difficult to reach, so keep trying. Again, be patient, don’t pre-judge; guide them, don’t push them. If you have difficulty with your child and “the talk,” we at Advanced Care are here to help. I have this type of discussion several times in any given week. Please contact my office if needed. Good luck.

Welcome to the May/June Issue of The Atlantic County Woman Publication! Despite the late snowfall and colder temperatures in April, the pair of Canada geese began nesting near our mailbox. This means for the next 24 to 28 days, we will try to be careful when venturing out to our mailbox or trash cans. However, as we did two years ago, we are hoping to witness the baby goslings hatching and leaving the nest under the watchful eye of their mother and father. Speaking of mothers and fathers, now is the time of year where we get to honor the mothers and fathers in our own lives. First, Mother’s Day is May 13th, a time to recognize how special Mom is and to make sure she feels loved and appreciated. Then, on June 17th, we celebrate Father’s Day, a time to appreciate the special men in our lives who have guided us through life’s triumphs and troubles. In addition to these two holidays, Memorial Day is celebrated on May 28th. Memorial Day is a time to honor all those men and women who have died in service to their country. Memorial Day is also the unofficial beginning of summer in New Jersey, as the beach communities come alive with activities. Another occasion I celebrated in the month of April was my four-year anniversary of beginning my career at the Atlantic County Woman Publication. Over the past four years, I have met some wonderful people, from our talented staff to our clients, who are highly skilled in their professions. I am looking forward to continuing my career at the Atlantic County Woman Publication as the Production Manager and I thank each and every one of you for continuing the success of the Atlantic County Woman Publication. As the weather heats up and all the beach communities come alive with activities, we want to wish you a safe and fun summer. Take advantage of everything the Jersey Shore has to offer, including the many wonderfully popular events you can read about in the Community section of this publication. In addition, don’t forget to visit our Facebook page, where you can enter to win tickets to see an amazing show.

I thought varicose veins are just a cosmetic problem. Is that true?

It is important to understand that varicose veins and venous reflux are NOT necessarily simple cosmetic problems. This can be a sign of an abnormal condition in the circulation. In addition to pain, some individuals may be at risk for chronic swelling, permanent skin discoloration, open wounds and even blood clots. With early diagnosis and treatment, long-term complications can usually be prevented. Treatment often has the added benefit of improving aesthetics, even in cases that are not considered “cosmetic.”

Who is at risk for varicose veins?

Prolonged standing or sitting on one place, family history of varicose veins, and being overweight are all known risks. In addition, increasing age and pregnancy are risk factors. Some people may develop varicose veins without having any of these known conditions.

ow that we are certain that spring has finally arrived, it’s time to finish our spring closet cleaning. We’re purging the clothes we haven’t worn for a variety of reasons…some were never quite right but we had tried hard to make them work. The best part, though, is making room for the new fashion or accessory that will complete our spring wardrobe.

Barbara’s Boutique allows us to shop for the newest trends without having to travel to New York! The travels savings we enjoy by shopping at Barbara’s will allow us to purchase that accent purse, scarf or jewelry that will complete a new spring ensemble. Spring’s fashion options are wildly varied, from skinny-cropped trousers to wide legged pants. There is something for everyone. The trend is more about being laid back and masculine than girly.

The six biggest fads of the seasons are: • Midi Skirts. Skirts are definitely at the calf-length rather than over the knee length. • Crop Tops/Jackets. • Athletic styles with a high fashion twist. • Pastels are fashionable for spring. You can pair soft pastels with vivid bights to create a colorful equilibrium. The designers have used colors to refresh, revive and define a piece of fashion. The colors Placid Blue, Violet Tulip and Hemlock compliment the sand color. Additional color favorites are Paloma, Freesia, Celosia Orange, Cayenne, Radiant Orchid and Dazzling Blue. These colors can be seen as paint swirls, color-blocking and geometric prints in trousers, jackets and brightly colored shirts. • Garden inspired prints take center stage in tops, pants, and dresses. • Metallic. Embellishments on your accessories, sequin jackets, dresses, skirts and suits. This season, casual is chic – no matter what your age. Fashion’s new wave is about freedom and comfort. Sporty sandals replace the platforms and flowing pants and skirts replace restrictive skirts. Whether you’re creating a stunning new outfit or fine-tuning an existing one, Stephanie and Karen at Barbara’s Boutique will ensure that your new spring look is easy and cool!

So step out of ordinary, everyday life for a little while and feel the magic at Barbara’s Boutique, where they always keep the fun in fashion!

Financial Management

Keeping Our Seniors Safe: Watch Your Wallet Article by Ira J. Brower, Founder, Garden State Trust Company

• Revocable living trust. A trust creates another layer of financial

A few months ago, I received a message at home from an IRS agent and a few days later from someone who had a buyer for my new home. I knew that both calls were a sham. At Garden State Trust we primarily work with retired and soon-to-be retired individuals. I knew that a company we worked with, Merrill Anderson & Co., created a booklet about Keeping Our Seniors Safe that we purchased and placed on our website. I would like to share the booklet with you. The following anecdotes are composites of true stories, with the names omitted to protect the innocent. Mrs. X got a telephone call from the fire department telling her that her chimney needed to be inspected promptly under the new fire code. The caller was a scamster; there was no new fire code; he was looking for a way to be admitted into her home. The fire and police departments subsequently issued public warnings against this sort of scam. After Mr. Y’s wife died, his nephew moved in with him to help with the household. Then the nephew’s girlfriend moved in as well. Then the nephew started helping with the money management. Mr. Y’s monthly statements began to show large, unusual withdrawals. Mrs. Z was approached by a stranger in a parking lot who claimed to have a winning lottery ticket. The stranger claimed that he could not claim the prize because he was in trouble with the law, but he would sell it to Mrs. Z at a steep discount. Another passerby confirmed the winning numbers on the ticket. Actually, the second person also was part of the scam. These are three examples of financial exploitation of seniors, and unfortunately there are thousands more. By some estimates, 20% of those over 65 will experience financial exploitation at some point during their retirement—which at this date tallies some $3 billion every year. The three stories above have happy endings. In each case, the individual involved or family members were able to step up and take responsibility for remedying the situation. But the better course is to take early steps to head off the possibility of neglect or financial abuse.

protection against con artists and scamsters. Assets are placed in the care of a trustee, who manages them, collects dividends and interest, and makes distributions on behalf of the trustor as provided in the trust agreement.

With these protections in place, the opportunity for neglect or financial exploitation of the senior is reduced sharply. Signs of Financial Exploitation • You spot unusual financial activity, such as unexplained credit card activity, withdrawals incurring penalties, newly authorized signers on accounts. • You are confused about recent financial arrangements/transactions. • Recent changes to property titles, deeds, refinanced mortgages, power of attorney documents, wills, trusts or other documents that you do not understand or did not authorize. • A caregiver or beneficiary has refused to use your funds for your necessary care and treatment. • Someone has threatened to place you in a long-term care facility unless you give him or her control of your finances. • Food or medication has been manipulated or withheld to make you weak and compliant. • You have become financially responsible for a family member or friend without regard for your own needs. We Are A Resource Financial exploitation and neglect of our seniors is a serious and growing problem. Garden State Trust Company is doing our part to fight back, being alert to the protection of our seniors and raising awareness of the issue in the community. Now you need to do your part, taking the initiative to protect your loved ones, with the tools that are available to you. What To Do When Financial Abuse Of An Elderly Person Is Suspected If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 911 or the Detective Division of your local Police Department.

To report cases of suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation, you can visit on our website: http://gstrustco.com/assets/Garden-State-WYW.pdf and you will find phone numbers for New Jersey Adult Protective Services throughout the State. Or you can call our office at 732-255-5000 and we can mail you these important telephone numbers.

Plan Now, Avoid Being A Victim Later No one expects to be a victim of neglect or financial exploitation. Unfortunately, as people reach their most senior years, the chances of financial exploitation occurring increase significantly. What can you do? • To nearly eliminate telemarketing calls, join the National Do Not Call Registry. Visit www.donotcall.gov or call 888.382.1222 to register your phone number. Remember that charities, politicians and On You. On Your Family. On political parties are exempt from penalties for ignoring the list. • Stay in touch with others, because isolation can make you more vulnerable. • Never, ever send anyone personal information to collect a prize or reward. • Consult with someone you trust before making a large purchase or investment or signing a legal contract. • Special bank accounts with a trusted family member. Such accounts may be used to handle all the routine financial expenses of retirement. • Durable power of attorney. This gives a third party, normally a trusted family member, greater authority over one’s financial life. The authority may extend to making investment decisions, even making gifts to family members. Powers of attorney need to be drafted with care by a lawyer who specializes in elder law, and some supervision is warranted. Unfortunately, for all the good that they can do, powers of attorney have been the source of financial exploitation in some Toms River, NJ | Cherry Hill, NJ | Lebanon, NJ cases.

Pilates At Breathe

Leah Schwartz, owner/certified barre and pilates instructor

“Start where you are, grow from there, the practice is yours.” My journey started with my love for barre. I connected with the fluidity of the movements and how my body felt. Pilates was natural progression. The more the I practiced, the more I desired to perfect my skills. In 2013 I began my training and certifications in Barre and in 2016 I completed my reformer certification from Balance Body. Throughout my education I have collaborated with mentors of varying practices that have diversified my technique and knowledge, and molded my abilities as an instructor.

Regardless of what class you choose, make sure to let your instructor know you’re a beginner. This way, they’ll be able to keep an eye on you throughout the class and offer modifications or form adjustments that ensure you are moving in proper posture. 2. You’ll feel your muscles burn during class, and you’ll probably be sore the next day. While you may not be crushing high-intensity exercises like squat jumps or lifting heavy dumbbells, the mostly bodyweight routines that Pilates classes offer can be pretty intense. Take the signature Pilates Hundred, for example. A core-focused move that involves less than two inches of constant movement, it will make your abs burn. Dedicating your entire focus to even the smallest movements means that you’ll work the muscles more efficiently and solidify good posture through movement. This means you can be dealing with muscle soreness after your workout. Don’t fret: Being sore the next day doesn’t mean you’re out of shape; it just means you’re challenging your muscles in new ways or working muscles you didn’t know you had. 3. If you’ve wanted to try Pilates classes but something has been holding you back, now’s your time to sign up for your first one. Pilates offers plenty of benefits to your body, no matter your fitness background. You’ll improve your posture, focus on body alignment, and get one heck of a core workout. Want to know what the hype is all about? Here are three things a Pilates newbie needs to know to enjoy her first class. 1. There are two different kinds of Pilates classes: mat classes and reformer classes. You’ll be tackling a class that’s based on either a mat, which is a tad thicker than your standard yoga mat, to cushion pressure points, or a machine called a reformer, which is a sliding platform complete with stationary foot bar, springs, and pulleys that provide resistance to help tone the body. Both options focus on the concept of control rather than cranking out endless reps or muscle exhaustion. In Pilates, your muscles are working to lift against gravity and (in the case of the

The Importance of HVAC Maintenance

It’s almost officially summer, which means that the majority of homes in our area will be using their air conditioning on full blast for the next few months ahead. In a hot and humid climate like ours, it is more important than ever to ensure that your air conditioning system will be able to carry you through the hottest months of the year.

Jen and Clay Pierce Clay’s Climate Control LLC is a family-owned and operated company located in Linwood, NJ. The company was founded by Clay and Jen Pierce in 2001 based on the principle that we could offer an excellent HVAC experience to our customers. Our goal is simple; to provide a professional, stress-free experience for your HVAC repair, maintenance or installation.

One of the best ways you can make sure that your AC is prepared is through annual HVAC maintenance. If you haven’t had your system cleaned, inspected, and had necessary repairs made this year, now is the time! Here are just a few of the reasons why HVAC maintenance is so important. System Efficacy and Efficiency: One of the most important reasons to have your HVAC system properly maintained is to ensure that your air conditioning will run at maximum efficiency and effectiveness. Simple things like cleaning or changing air filters, cleaning air ducts, and performing basic repairs can go a long way to keep your system running at peak performance and increase its lifespan. Save Money: By keeping your system running at maximum efficiency, you’ll be saving a lot of money in the long run. Not only is an efficient system able to keep your home cool using less power and strength, lowering energy bills, but performing

annual maintenance will also help to ensure that you won’t need to replace your HVAC system as quickly. Avoid Emergencies: The best way to avoid any type of emergency with your HVAC system is through regular maintenance of your air conditioning system, where a professional can ensure that your system will be able to make it through the summer. Happy Vacationers: If you do rent your property out during the summer, a huge component of their stay will be their comfort in your house, which means that keeping your air conditioning in good working order is key. Warranty: If you have a new HVAC system, it’s important to be aware of the system’s warranty. HVAC manufacturers require annual maintenance by a licensed professional to keep the warranty of the system valid. If you miss an annual check-up for your system and it breaks, there’s a chance it will no longer be covered under warranty, so be sure to keep up to date on your HVAC check-ups!

If you have any concerns about your air conditioning or have yet to schedule your system’s annual maintenance, give us a call at (609) 653-2295. We look forward to hearing from you!

Sexual Assault is an unfathomable offense. It is a nightmare one just wants to wake up from so it will all be gone, as if it never happened. But it feels as if it will never be gone. It’s seems like a forever curse from which emerges an endless ‘river of tears.’

The literature also shows a pretty well accepted view by sociologists “that about half of American women are sexually harassed at least once during their working lives. While the ages of those who harass are not well documented, there is a school of thought that because of how important being powerful is, those who do it are generally older than those they abuse.”

Don’t suffer alone…the people harmed, their close friends and family members who are always negatively affected, and even those who do the attacking, there is help and being alone no more is achievable.

In attempting to ascertain the “make-up” of the “Harasser,” I have listened to my patients over the years, discussed the subject with colleagues and read many articles about such personalities. There are a few character traits that Call 609.484.0770 or visit www.SouthJerseyPsychiatry.com. seem pervasive among these “vampires” of morality. Among the characteristics most consistently identified is ‘narcissism.’ That should be of no surprise because powerful people who are narcissists are egocentric and self pleasing. For such a person, the victim should feel honored to be worthy of their power and attention. Other character traits are aggression, impulsiveness, compulsion, addictive personalities and, in fact, psychopaths. This is clearly not an exhaustive list of characteristics, but add this and other negative traits to a male dominated workforce, and we potentially have a tsunami of moral decay. Lets Talk SS18 Trends Seagrass OC is now on the Ave! EW Come see ouratN location 752 Asbury Ave!

ALLWHITE EVERYTHING:

Don’t underestimate how easy this trend is! Experiment with volume, shape and texture. Add a pop of color with an accessory, but for SS18 its all about natural hues to warm up your look and make it the picture of sophistication.

LAVENDER HAZE:

There is a lot of pink around recently, but lilac is also a MUST color for SS18. Its sophisticated and grown-up. Colorblocking is the way to go and its often easier than mixing lots of colors together.

S

S

FRESH FLOWERS:

For SS18 look for prints that are in a darker hue or on a simply shaped piece, rather than something frilly. Add a pair of sneakers or boots and a leather jacket or oversized knit cardi - something to counter that feminine edge!

S

WHITE SHADES:

The sunglasses EVERY style rebel is wearing right now! Here are four pairs to consider.

Testimonial “Finally a boutique that addresses all my needs!! Whether it be Linwood or OC, this is the spot to find unique boutique styles with exceptional service. Handmade jewelry, Voluspa candles and great styles that can be dressed up or down. And lets talk about the quality!! I love Seagrass Boutique and if you haven’t stopped by yet, YOU MUST. Shopping at Seagrass Boutique is NOT a chore, rather a relief!” -April Swires

Coastal Fashion With A Modern Bohemian Flair Home to one of the hottest women’s boutiques in New Jersey, Seagrass has enjoyed somewhat of a cult following since opening in 2016. Owner Kevin Heck’s passion for the industry is evident as soon as you visit his store. With his background in Public Relations and degree in fashion marketing, you could say he is well suited for the role. The store is filled with the hottest trends in casual beachwear and resort clothing with that “boho chic” feel. He adds, “At Seagrass Boutique our motto has always been about giving the best customer experience. We take the time to figure out the wants and needs of our clients. We listen, we understand different body types, and our goal is to provide an experience that you won’t receive online.” ACW: What is the average age of your customer?

Kevin: Seagrass offers something for every age. Whether it is a bracelet, a delicious candle, casual, comfortable outfits, faux leather jackets, soft vegan suede slim pants, or a beautiful dress for a special occasion. We have you covered! The average age of our customers is between 20 and 65.

ACW: What do you enjoy most about owning your business? Do you find any part challenging?

Kevin: The most gratifying part is the gift of meeting and doing business with clients who have become fast friends. I’m honored to have met so many great people. By owning my own business, I am able to pick and choose fashion styles that make a statement, but are still comfortable, all at the same time. It is also wonderful receiving feedback from my clients that love everything they have purchased. The best part is when they leave the store with a smile. As we all know, there has been a shift in retail. With the convenience of online and big box fashion, it has become increasingly hard to compete. We are always trying to find new styles and items that make us stand out and become a destination in the South Jersey area.

ACW: What essential pieces are necessary to achieve that “Bohemian” look?

Kevin: My interpretation of Bohemian is styles focused on free and flowy fabrics. Some staples to include in

your wardrobe are a maxi skirt, neutral colored ankle boots or gladiators, lacey cardigans, the standard printed maxi dress, and of course tunic style t-shirts and embroidered blouses. Overall, one should dress with the mindset of being free and casual in styles that are eye-catching, while still being whimsical.

ACW: What style trends do you see on the rise for 2018? What will be making a comeback?

Kevin: I see ruffles, unique trims, contrast details, embroidery, and florals making a strong comeback this year. Colors have been a bit muted for spring but bold and vibrant in the summer. Some women will be thrilled to know that the slip dress will be back. In 2018 it’s all about making a statement with sheer fabrications, updated trenches, fringe, and embellishments.

Kevin Heck

ACW: What types of sunglasses are in style these days?

Kevin: We offer a wide array of styles and manufacturers. We have the Australian sunglass line, Quay that is upbeat and very eye catching. With Quay, it’s all about the bigger, the brighter, and the better! We carry RAEN sunglasses that are American made and excellent quality. It’s a style that is extremely flattering and looks good on everyone. We also offer Tom Ford sunglasses, which are above and beyond in both quality and style. Overall, the sunglasses for 2018 are larger in size and outstated in style. The aviator style is still going strong and mirrored lenses are a must.

ACW: How is your new location doing?

Kevin: Last summer we opened in Ocean City and the store continues to do very well. Each of our stores has its own aesthetic and this location is a bit more laid back, especially because in Ocean City folks are looking for a more casual look. It’s about having the ability to transform an outfit from day into evening, or pieces you can dress up in your own personal way. It’s a busy, upbeat place to be during the summer and I am looking forward to our second season!

Choosing The Right Attorney By Marla Marinucci, Esq.

C

hoosing the right divorce attorney can make all the difference in your case, both financially and emotionally. People contemplating divorce often think that they need a “barracuda” lawyer in order to “win.” My first response when somebody makes a statement like this is always to say that there is no winning in divorce—plain and simple. My job as your attorney and advocate is to get you the fairest and best result possible based upon your unique set of circumstances. Divorce, in and of itself, is one of the most traumatic life experiences a person can go through. If you think that hiring the quintessential “barracuda” or Rambo-esque attorney will get you anything more than additional emotional trauma, combined with an exorbitantly high legal bill, you have been misguided. In choosing your attorney, a good way to start is to ask friends, family and colleagues for referrals. Most important is that your potential divorce lawyer should specialize in family law, as I do, and not be someone who will take anything that walks in off the street. You wouldn’t want your primary care physician performing your root canals, would you? Same holds true for matters of the law. In addition to specializing in family law, I am very proud of the fact that I am a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Attorneys (AAML), a distinction held by approximately 75 attorneys throughout this State. Moreover, in Cape May and Atlantic County where I practice, there are only four practicing family law attorneys, myself included, who are Fellows of the AAML. It is an honor to be a member of this group made up of the most skilled and experienced family law attorneys in New Jersey. In addition to being a Fellow of the AAML, I have also been Certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Matrimonial Law Attorney. Again, another distinction earned by very few attorneys (less than 3%) which demonstrates that an attorney possesses above-average skills and knowledge in their respective field of law. When you have your first consultation, make sure it is in person and not over the phone because you need to know if you are going to have a good rapport with your potential attorney who is going to be counseling and

guiding you through a very difficult time in your life. Also, you should expect to pay a consultation fee for a consultation with a family law attorney. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. If you are insistent that you will not settle under any circumstances and just want to have your day in court, I may not be the right attorney for you. Most people do not realize that the number of divorce cases in New Jersey that actually go to trial is minuscule. I do not know the exact figures but I can confidently represent that fewer than five percent of divorce cases actually go to trial in New Jersey. Moreover, the trial is what’s called a “bench trial,” meaning that it is decided by one Judge, not a panel of jurors. I am a firm believer that it is always in the best interests of the parties and their children (if there are any) that the case settle out of court. While we have outstanding Family Part Judges in Atlantic and Cape May Counties, where I primarily practice, they will tell you that they are the last person who should be making decisions about your future and much prefer that the parties themselves arrive at an amicable resolution of their matter. Divorce is emotionally traumatizing, no doubt. But trials irreparably destroy lives. If your primary goal in your divorce is to make your soon-to-be ex pay as much as possible in legal fees because you want to destroy him/her, then I am not the right fit for you. Similarly, if you are seeking to bring to the Court’s attention certain personal issues about your spouse that have no bearing on the outcome of your case, then I am clearly not the best choice as I feel that engaging in issues (especially those that could be considered below-the-belt) that are not relevant to the case at hand is neither necessary nor productive and in the end is simply a waste of the Court’s time. There are no guarantees in divorce. In fact, it is a standard provision in any fee agreement that there are no such guarantees. However, I do have a few personal guarantees of my own: 1) There is no winning in divorce; 2) A barracuda belongs in the sea; and 3) I will tirelessly advocate for you to ensure you attain the fairest result possible and we will share a chuckle or two along the way.

If you or someone you know is contemplating divorce, please call my office to arrange for a consultation. 609-398-1900.

MARLA MARINUCCI, ESQ. Marla is the first to say that in her profession, it’s all about getting the “right” result vs. “winning” a case. She adds, “Something I tell all of my clients is: There is no winning in family law. It’s about advocating and getting the right and just result based upon the circumstances.” She suggests advocating to the best of your ability without hitting below the belt. Most importantly, she says, “Don’t be afraid to ask your colleagues for advice if you have a difficult issue and you need a second opinion.”

If you or someone you know is contemplating divorce or has a legal issue involving a family law matter, please call my office to arrange for a consultation. 609-398-1900.

When Marla Marinucci first started out as a young matrimonial attorney, she felt a strong desire to change the world. After several years and a myriad of challenging cases, she now realizes that was not a reasonable plan. “Family law is constantly evolving and an Appellate or Supreme Court decision can change everything in the blink of an eye,” she adds. It takes a very strong personality to deal with people during the darkest hours of their lives. Marla has the tools and the experience to help her clients make it through these difficult times.

over a $500 credit card bill when the legal fees incurred to fight over it will exceed the amount of the actual bill. In appropriate situations, I also encourage my clients to settle as many issues as they can with their soonto-be ex-spouse because it will cost them less in the long run, thereby reducing everyone’s stress level, not to mention their respective legal bills.

ACW: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in this profession? Marla: New lawyers starting out should network and get involved.

Whether that means joining your local bar association or going to local

ACW: What do you find to be the most challenging events for young professionals— just get involved. It may lead to a job offer, referral, or both. Also, showing respect at all times for your aspect of your profession? Marla: Explaining the law to clients can be very challenging. For

example: it’s much harder financially to live separate and apart than it is together. Thus, if during the marriage you enjoyed going out to dinner; getting a massage when you felt like it; or taking vacations two times per year, after the divorce you may not be able to afford those luxuries because there are now two households. Those luxuries are not an entitlement and not something that by law must continue once you and your spouse are divorced if there isn’t enough money to support that kind of lifestyle, which is the reality in most divorces. Litigants have a difficult time grappling with this concept. Also, the stress level that comes with the job can be at times quite high. One of the most challenging aspects of this practice right now is how to address the new Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that was recently passed and how it will affect our clients’ overall bottom line. In addition to the multiple changes in the new tax code, for new divorces entered after December 31, 2018, alimony will no longer be taxable to the recipient nor deductible to the payor. This will have a huge impact on the practice of family alw. Finally, difficult and unreasonable adversaries are an unfortunate challenging aspect to this profession because they not only double or triple the parties’ legal fees, they render an already difficult and emotional situation much worse.

ACW: What is the most important advice you would give to a prospective client?

Marla: Different clients require different advice. I often find myself

saying, “Don’t sweat the small stuff,” because I don’t believe in fighting

colleagues, Judges, and court staff, no matter how hard that can be at times, is paramount to surviving in this profession. Finally, just do the right thing.

ACW: Share with our readers the first three steps a married couple should do when contemplating a divorce. Marla: My advice would be to first try and have an adult conversation

with the other party to see if they can agree on anything. The more the parties can mutually resolve between themselves, especially when there are children involved, the better for everyone. I also firmly believe in alternate dispute resolution and would advise a party about to embark on a divorce to contact a mediator who could assist them in resolving their differences prior to involving the courts. It is much less costly and also provides the parties with more control over their matter, as there is no pressure from the Court to get the case resolved. This results in considerably less stress and parties who are still able to communicate with one another post–divorce, as opposed to the nastiness and bitterness that accompanies litigation. Finally, when searching for an attorney to represent you, do your research and make sure your attorney specializes in matrimonial/family law.

Close to 25 percent of VA Patients Have Diabetes Written By Barbara Greenling, DNP, MSN, APN-C

American Veterans — Time to Take Action

Nearly one in four Veterans receiving care from VA has diabetes. This is partly attributable to the older average age of Veterans compared to the general US population. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that nearly 26 million people, or about 8 percent of the US population, have diabetes. That includes about 11 million persons 65 and older, or about 27 percent of seniors. In the United States, about one-in-four persons with diabetes are not aware that they have the condition. While exact numbers are not available, it is likely that the number is lower for Veterans receiving regular VA primary care. However, many Veterans of all ages are at risk for diabetes because of the high rate of obesity and those who are overweight, estimated at over 70 percent of Veterans receiving VA care.

“About one-in-four persons with diabetes are not aware that they have the condition.” Weight Loss and Physical Activity

An individual does not have to achieve drastic weight loss. Losing about five percent of one’s weight will help. In recent studies, a weight loss and exercise program was more effective than medication in both younger and older individuals. The medication was not effective in persons older than 60. The VA’s MOVE! Weight Management Program is available to all Veterans who are overweight or obese and for whom weight management is appropriate. It supports Veterans in developing plans that work for them to lose or maintain weight through balanced diet, physical activity, and behavior change approaches.

For the MOVE! program to be tailored to the individual’s needs, the Veteran can complete a 23 item questionnaire. More information is available at www.move.VA.gov. MOVE! is available in multiple convenient formats including group sessions, telephone-based care, and a new home messaging program called TeleMOVE! which uses the telephone line, provides daily support, and is interfaced with a scale for weekly home weigh-ins. Talk with your Primary Care Team about MOVE! Although the focus is to identify individuals at higher risk for developing diabetes, it is important to remind persons who already have diabetes of the importance of weight loss and physical activity in managing diabetes. Additionally, persons with diabetes or at risk for diabetes should manage other conditions, such as hypertension or high lipid levels, appropriately, and if they have diabetes, they should be screened at regular intervals for early signs of kidney, foot or eye conditions.

Diabetes and Agent Orange

Diabetes mellitus type 2 is one of the diseases VA presumes is associated with exposure to herbicides, such as Agent Orange. Veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange do not have to prove a connection between their type 2 diabetes mellitus and military service to be eligible for VA benefits. Healthy eating habits and exercise can help prevent this chronic disease. Visit the Agent Orange homepage to learn more about Agent Orange and VA benefits. The American Diabetes Association provides an online Diabetes Risk Test.

What Is Acupuncture?

A

cupuncture is a holistic medicine - it sees symptoms in relationship to the entire body, rather than focus solely on the symptoms, and it empowers the body to heal itself. It is a natural healing method that supports the body and addresses the root of the problem, not just the symptoms. It is very gentle and relaxing to receive, and has an extremely low probability of side effects. The purpose behind all acupuncture therapy is the achievement of balance - specifically the balance of the flow of Qi. Qi (pronounced “chee”), or vital energy, flows throughout the body.

Symptoms are seen as imbalance in this flow, and the correction of the imbalance is reflected in good health. The Qi flows in pathways throughout the body. Each pathway runs on the skin surface and is accessible via acupuncture points, and also runs deeply into the body and connects to the internal organs. The pathway brings the treatment from the superficial level into the deeper levels. Acupuncture has been used for centuries as preventative medicine and to relieve acute conditions and chronic conditions, such as asthma, chronic pain, anxiety and

depression. Acupuncture also treats pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia, inflammatory bowel syndrome, menstruation, fertility, menopause, and so much more... Over 2500 years old, it is a time-tested method of preventative care that speaks for itself. Acupuncture has been used to prevent, diagnose and treat disease, as well as to improve general health. Acupuncture treatments are done individually or community-style. Community acupuncture is practiced in a group, rather than a one-on-one setting. The treatments are primarily on the front of the body and mainly on distal points (legs, arms, hands, feet, ears, head). Community-style clinics are more affordable so you can get the amount of treatment you need in a shorter period of time. The idea is to make acupuncture accessible and affordable!

2018 Summer Design Trends

Written by: Ava Cocchi

Spring is finally here and thankfully summer is creeping up right behind so we must be prepared to wine, dine, and be divine in our outdoor oasis. The 2018 summer design trends for outdoor living can be costly, but doing it within your budget, or even DIY, can vastly change the way you use your outdoor space.

Here are a few suggestions on ways to make your space up to date while creating cozy moments for you and your summer visitors! 1. OUTDOOR SHOWER: Whether you live at the beach or on the mainland, an outdoor shower can make the mundane act of daily cleaning feel like a luxury. Surrounding oneself with fresh air and nature at the end of a long day or just rinsing off after hours of playing on the beach, an outdoor shower can be practical while feeling magical. 2. DINING ALFRESCO: Spring and summer is the ideal time for enjoying the outdoor space, and alfresco dining is set to be bigger than ever this year. Create a dedicated area with comfy furniture and mood lighting, complete with a sunken fire pit, BBQ or pizza oven. Lighted pergolas with integrated drainage, lighting and heating will be the must-have garden feature, while outdoor kitchens with dedicated spaces for cooking, eating and entertaining will become a central focus. 3. WATERFALL: There are endless studies that show the sound of running water can immediately reduce stress and create a feeling of relaxation. If you are not lucky enough to live on the beach and hear the ocean, then bring this natural element into your backyard. 4. GROW IT YOURSELF: Veganism is one of the fastest growing lifestyle movements, and coupled with rising food prices and a growing appreciation of organic produce, in 2018 the “grow your own” movement will really see resurgence. Create a dedicated space in your backyard for your favorite vegetables and fruits and watch in wonder as your garden grows. Start with easy foods such as peas, broccoli, spinach and even quinoa. 5. SOLAR LIGHTING: Never has lighting your backyard or porch been easier! Solar lighting is set to be even bigger in 2018 thanks to a number of factors including cost and safety, and of course it creates a perfect atmosphere to relax and unwind in.

Give Your Your Scalp Give Scalp What What ItIt Needs Needs IS YOUR SCALP HEALTHY? Scalp conditions are a common occurrence and symptoms can be unpleasant: itching, redness, dandruff, oily scalp, unwanted odors, and in some cases hair thinning and hair loss. It is possible to stabilize or delay hair thinning or hair loss in the same way that scalp conditions can be controlled or checked. It is essential to start targeted treatment as soon as problems arise.

WHAT IS HEAD FIRST? In short, Head First is hair loss prevention. The causes of your hair thinning or hair loss can be identified by drawing up a complete scalp assessment, including an analysis of your scalp using a sophisticated microcamera and a unique software. Our Head First Trichology specialist will then be able to elaborate a treatment plan to meet your needs. Your plan could include in-salon treatments, home care products and laser therapy. Act now and book an appointment for a private consultation with one of our trichology hair and scalp specialists.

Even if you have a full head of hair, it may be time to take your scalp health into consideration. We have solutions for the most common problems and conditions that can affect your scalp. •

Need Assistance Or Health Care To Live Safely At Home? No one ever expects to need help with their day-to-day life, but a debilitating injury or chronic illness can strike anyone at any age or stage. When it does, the people of Atlantic and Cape May Counties can count on BAYADA Home Health Care to comprehensively meet their needs. There are six local offices that specialize in serving the unique care needs of different populations. What’s so wonderful about having them all under the same BAYADA umbrella is that together, they can work seamlessly to coordinate a full range of services your family may need, especially in the common event that your needs change. While we provide many different services, all of our team members adhere to the same rigorous standards and share the same commitment to compassion, excellence, and reliability—The BAYADA Way. For each and every client, our mission is to help them live safely at home with comfort, independence, and dignity.

Adult Nursing Care BAYADA’s Atlantic City office provides adult nursing services (also known as private duty or skilled nursing). Their specialty is to provide ongoing care at home for adults with a chronic illness, injury, or disability. Multidisciplinary care teams may include licensed practical nurses (LPNs) or RNs, often with special training and certifications to manage serious diagnoses and complex medical needs such as respiratory therapy and feeding tubes, high-tech equipment such as ventilators, and unique diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. The average age of our adult nursing clients is 39. Adult nursing services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and are usually provided on an ongoing basis, in shifts of two hours or more. The nurses quickly become attuned to each client’s lifestyle and personal preferences, and over time they become like friends and family.

Assistive Care

(non-medical personal care)

BAYADA’s assistive care office in Linwood provides various assistive care services - also known as supportive carefor adults and seniors who need non-medical help with activities of daily living. Help with self-care may include anything from bathing to dressing and grooming. Household support may involve meal planning and preparation, laundry, or light housekeeping. Companionship focuses on safety precautions and the client’s well-being by providing social interaction, physical activities, recreation, and escorts to shopping or appointments. Many home health aides serving this region have been specially trained and educated to provide dementia care. Assistive care services usually are delivered on an ongoing, regular basis in shifts of two hours or more. Linwood also offers 24-hour live-in companions to support primary family caregivers who may need time to tend to their own needs. Providing peace of mind and stress relief for family members is a big part of the benefits of assistive care.

Pediatrics BAYADA Pediatrics, Atlantic Cape May specializes in providing highquality, family-centered nursing and therapeutic care services for children from birth to age 18 in the hospital, home, school, or community setting. Pediatric nursing services, also known as private duty nursing (PDN), are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and can range from short-term recovery to ongoing nursing, rehab, and high-

tech care. BAYADA Pediatrics gives parents peace of mind while they sleep, work, and do what they need to do by coordinating with their child’s physicians, insurance, case managers, and other care providers to ensure their child receives the best care available. Our experienced, highly skilled and trained pediatric nurses can assist with premature or high-risk infant care, medications, medical monitoring and intervention, disease management, management of bowel or bladder conditions, care for seizure disorders, traumatic brain injury care, catheter or gastric tube care, tracheostomy and ventilator care, respiratory treatments, transportation, or participation in school, social activities, and age- and diagnosis-appropriate exercise and play. Clinical manager oversight and home visits, as well as round-the-clock call responses, give a priceless measure of comfort to pediatric patients and their families.

BAYADA’s Got You Covered! Hospice BAYADA Hospice, Atlantic County specializes in comprehensive end-of-life medical, social, emotional, and spiritual care to comfort and support families and patients with a determined life-expectancy of six months or less. With a variety of care and comfort services delivered by an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals, bereavement counselors, and medical social workers, the goal of hospice is to support a patient’s quality of life and the family’s grieving process. Professional caregivers are specially trained and educated to provide the best possible care for veterans, who often have unique needs related to military service, combat experience, or other traumatic events. The life review is at the heart of BAYADA Hospice services; it’s our way to help patients prepare for a peaceful end of life by exploring what goals and experiences are most important to them, what can bring them the most joy now, and what personal relationships may need some time and care to make sure that nothing important goes left unsaid. Once their care team guides a patient through a life review, they support the patient in making their wishes come true.

Home health

BAYADA Home Health Care, Linwood provides Medicare-certified short-term nursing, rehabilitative, therapeutic, or assistive care services, usually for a limited number of one-hour visits. Physicians prescribe home health services to help a client recover from an illness, injury, hospital stay, or surgery, or to manage a chronic medical condition with the goal of preventing an unnecessary hospitalization. When a new client engages home health services, a registered nurse will visit them at home to assess their needs, then works with their clinical manager and physician to develop individualized goals and a plan of care. Professional care teams may include a nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, medical social worker, or home health aide, and their visits continue until recovery goals have been met.

Senior Living Services

BAYADA South Jersey Senior Living specializes in providing Medicare-certified home health services— such as nursing and therapy—to residents of assistive living and other senior communities. Seniors there receive the same high-quality, short-term recovery services as our clients who live in a private home, helping to prevent an unnecessary hospitalization. In some of the senior living communities we serve, we partner with them to offer wellness programs and fitness classes, bringing an enhanced level of holistic care for their residents’ complete well-being.

Meet Our BAYADA Nurses On The Cover The registered nurses (RNs) pictured on the cover work as BAYADA Clinical Managers in Atlantic and Cape May Counties, each in a different field office. As part of their duties, they get to visit our clients, assess their needs, and work with physicians to set goals and a care plan for each individual. They also oversee the caregiving team—providing hands-on training, answering questions, and ensuring that each client receives the care they need at the highest professional, ethical, and safety standards.

Michelle Amendolia, BSN, RN BAYADA Hospice, Atlantic County

“As a hospice director and nurse, I can say BAYADA Hospice is truly one of a kind. Every member of our office and field staff is so dedicated to the patients and families we support. Our nursing staff is unquestionably different from any other, always doing the right thing with excellence and selflessness. Their character is what makes BAYADA Hospice so remarkable.”

During National Nurses Week, we are proud to salute all the wonderful nurses out there! Mary Villanueva, BSN, RN

Judy Del Rossi, RN

“I love what I do because we give clients and families a sense of control over what may sometimes feel like an out-of-control situation. We allow family caregivers a sense of normalcy. When I’m looking for nurses to join our team, I look for their compassion and desire to learn—because nursing is an evergrowing career, and we learn something new every day.”

“Making a difference in people’s lives is professionally and personally rewarding. Our work culture is unique compared to other health care settings and other home health care agencies. We adapt to every situation as a team, working together for the welfare of our clients. Our culture is one of ‘will do,’ whatever it takes!”

Vehicles heat up quickly in the sun, and animals left in them can succumb to heat stroke within minutes. Heat stroke is life threatening for both dogs and cats.

Compounding Medications For Your Child Children pose many challenges when it comes to medication: they may resist having to take a medication, dislike the taste or texture, have difficulty swallowing solid dosage forms, and are fearful of injections. The limited pediatric market for most drugs may be the leading reason for the lack of investment in drug development for this population by the pharmaceutical industry. Most medications are not labeled for pediatric populations, and when a medication is not approved for use in infants and children, it usually is not available in a suitable pediatric dosage form. Fortunately, our compounding pharmacy is able to help.

We can compound oral medications into pleasant flavors:

A palatable formulation is more likely to improve compliance and minimize spillage or waste during administration. Lollipops are an ideal alternative to “swish and swallow” medications that need to be retained in the mouth for a prolonged period of time. Formulations can also be prepared in a suppository or rectal gel in the event that the oral route of administration is not an option. At Curexa, we love nothing more than to provide unique solutions to unique problems, whether it’s transdermal gels to rub on your child’s wrist, a lollipop lozenge to soothe a sore throat, or a diaper rash ointment to counteract the digestive acids that result in irritation. It’s why we’re the premier compounding pharmacy in Atlantic County.

Your Mind Shapes Your Body

- The Missing Ingredient in Weight Management You may have bought into a belief system that says the key to being slender is to alter your eating patterns, like consuming fewer calories, limiting portion sizes, etc. While it’s true that changing behaviors is critical to getting slimmer, there’s more to the story.

Rhoda Kopy, Director 1541 Rt. 37 East, Suite E Toms River, NJ 08753 The messages you give yourself have 732-270-0080 www.HypnoForWomen.com an impact.

When a person contacts me regarding weight issues, I pay close attention to what they say and how they say it. Most eventually reveal that they’ve been repeatedly embedding negative statements and beliefs, such as . . . • I’m fat like the rest of my family – it’s in our genes. • I can’t stick with any diet. • Nothing works for me – I lose, I gain, I lose, I gain. • My metabolism is so slow. • I look at food and I gain weight. • Most people eat a lot worse than me, but I’m the heavy one. When we constantly repeat something, it can become our reality; it impacts how we feel and behave. Even the healthiest lifestyle plan is doomed if those beliefs aren’t adequately addressed.

So how does your mind play a role in making you – and keeping you – chunky? Make Your Mind Work FOR You – Instead of Against You! Rhoda Kopy is a nationally certified consulting hypnotist and wellness coach, with specialty certification in complementary medical hypnotism. She earned a B.S. degree in Biomedical Communications from Richard Stockton College of N.J., has an academic background in nursing, and 20+ years’ experience in community health education and coaching. Rhoda adheres to strict ethical standards of the National Guild of Hypnotists.

Those negative and limiting beliefs may make you throw your hands up in the air and say, “I just have to deal with being fat.” You may become resigned to being overweight and dealing with the physical and emotional fall-out. Or you may start on a healthy path, then hear those whispers that say, “You’ll never stick to this; you’ll fail just like before.” Maybe your weight loss slows down

or plateaus, and you grow impatient, telling yourself, “This is it; my body refuses to go below this weight.” You’ve heard the saying, “As you think, so shall you be.” Your thoughts and beliefs precede your actions. Every thought you have releases brain chemicals. Thinking positive, optimistic thoughts decreases the production of stress hormones and boosts the production of “feelgood” chemicals. This increases your motivation and performance. When you repeatedly get caught up in negative, defeatist thinking, the brain changes sap your energy and motivation, and it becomes all too easy to give up.

Work on challenging your negative selftalk, and engaging in encouraging selftalk.

Instead of saying, “I have no control over sweets,” say, “Sweets have lost their hold on me.” A lot of people benefit by writing down affirmations, leaving them in plain sight, and repeating them often. Encourage yourself instead of berating yourself. Remember that what you feed your mind will impact your weight and overall well-being. Hypnosis and coaching can equip you with tools to think and act in ways consistent with your goals.

For a Free Phone Consultation, call me at 732-270-0080. Integrating hypnotic techniques and coaching paves the way for successful outcomes and boosts your sense of well-being.

Crossroad for Angels: Helping Survivors Overcome Their Past Eve Cortes, founder of Crossroad for Angels, strives to educate, help and inform survivors of sexual abuse and incest. Her Story When I walked into my new apartment for the first time and saw the surreal view from the window, it took my breath away. I walked out to the deck and looked out towards the ocean and watched the waves flow back and forth. I was drawn to the ocean, the sound of the waves and the seagulls as they glided by. It brought me back. Back to a place I had spent years trying to forget. As a child I had always lived by the ocean; the sounds and smells of the shore always brought me back to the abuse. I knew my brother loved me, but was this love? It started off with small things like an innocent game of playing house. I was the mom and he was the dad. “This is what mommies and daddies do,” he’d say, demonstrating with my Barbies how they should kiss and touch. Eventually the toys went away and our game of house turned into him on top of me, touching me in the living room, not uttering a word. The silence was deafening. I knew this was wrong, but he was loving me. This was love. Someone loved me. One morning I went downstairs and saw my brother in the living room, where that awful green

velvet couch was, that couch. I told him I wanted a new teddy bear. He told me that he probably couldn’t get me one on that particular day. That’s when I made my threat. If he didn’t get me the bear, I would reveal our secret to the world. He promised me he’d try. The next night, after I had fallen asleep, I woke up to screams. It was my mother crying and screaming for her son. The neighbor was over and had seen me come down the steps. She took me to her place and sat me down to tell me that my brother had killed himself. For years I blamed myself, but I have finally come to terms with the fact that this was all out of my control. One day I was watching my daughter, who, at the time, was four years old, and it hit me. I was her age when it started, and seeing how innocent and vulnerable she was helped me realize I was not at fault. I couldn’t have been, because I was once her. A million mistakes later and years of therapy have helped me heal. I still have eons of healing to do, but I am a great work in progress. I love my new apartment now. I embrace the past and have learned I cannot change it. Whenever I look out into the ocean and can see where the sky and water meet, I know there is something greater out there guiding me. What I experienced with my brother was not love, it was abuse. I know that now and the ocean no longer reminds me of the pain. It brings me hope. I have finally realized that the only way to forget was to remember...

Shoe Repair

53

Don’t Throw Your Shoes Away! Footwear is incredibly important. Your shoes impact your posture, how you walk and how you present yourself. Why not take care of something that’s responsible for so much? With over 20 years of professional shoe repair experience, we guarantee every repair and cleaning to be our very best! Recently, we sat down with Domenick and asked him about his tips to keep your shoes in great shape this Spring!

Any Tips To Try and Keep Spring Shoes From Fraying or Breaking Apart?

Domenick: The most important tip to protecting your shoes is to keep them out of the sun. Shoes sitting in cars and being subjected to the sun will break down the glue used to bind the souls and heels of the shoe.

How Do You Keep Suede and Leather Shoes Safe Throughout The Unexpected Weather Elements?

Domenick: I can apply water repellent to your shoes. By spraying your suede or leather shoes it will keep the elements from ruining your favorite pair of shoes. Please don’t throw out your shoes, leather purses, or coats just because they are damaged. Remember I can repair heels, souls, stretch and shine shoes, and most straps on leather purses. Bring me your broken heels, faded leather shoes and I will make them as good as new, I promise!

Geraldine Cohen

Mother of Atlantic County Justice Facility I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing the first female Warden of the Atlantic County Justice Facility, Geraldine Cohen. Although Warden Cohen will be retiring at the end of May, 2018, she has made history as being one of four female Wardens in the State of New Jersey. As I interviewed Warden Cohen, she sat behind her desk wearing civilian attire. Warden Cohen reported that she started wearing civilian attire when she began to grow her auburn hair out. However, Warden Cohen reported that she misses wearing her uniform for the sense of pride it exudes. Research reflects that Warden Cohen was not only the first female Warden of Atlantic County but also within the State in 2012. The other Wardens followed with Sandra Mueller in Ocean County in 2014, Mildred Scholtz in Burlington County in 2015, and Karen Taylor, who was named the first female Warden of the Camden County Correctional Facility in its 172-year history in 2016. Warden Cohen was born in a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Naval Hospital and was raised in the area of Atlantic City, Pleasantville and Absecon, New Jersey. Warden Cohen reported that she obtained her GED and then took the civil service exam. Warden Cohen’s employment varied prior to her receiving a call for an interview with Atlantic County for the position of Corrections Officer. In 1991 Geraldine Cohen became an “official” Corrections Officer. She graduated from the New Jersey Corrections Officer Training Academy in 1992. Warden Cohen went on to complete the West Point Command and Leadership Program in 2003. Only seven short months after becoming a Corrections Officer, Warden Cohen was offered the opportunity to work as a Sheriff’s Officer. Warden Cohen declined the invitation as she believed she belonged right where she was as a Corrections Officer at the county jail. The ability to move up in ranking in the Corrections field is not easy. A Corrections Officer must take advancement exams in order to be considered for higher positions. Also, testing is done as needed for open positions. The ranking order consists of Corrections Officer, then Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and Warden. Warden Cohen reported that she “got lucky” because every time there was an opportunity for advancement, she was able to take the required examinations for eligibility. Warden Cohen started as most Corrections Officers begin: with an assignment to the various housing areas within the confines of the jail. She then served as a Lieutenant Shift Commander for Inmate Services. In 2004, Warden Cohen was promoted to Captain. By 2007, Warden Cohen was assigned to oversee the Classifications, Criminal Records and Admissions Department. This assignment lasted only one year before she returned to oversee Inmate Services. Warden Cohen served as the Deputy Warden from 2010 until 2012 under Warden Joseph Bondiskey. Upon his retirement, Geraldine Cohen was appointed Warden by County Executive Dennis Levinson. Warden Cohen reported that her employment with the Atlantic County Justice Facility worked well with her single-parent lifestyle. However, coparenting three boys was not an easy task working shift work. Warden Cohen reported that she currently has three grown sons. Warden Cohen talked about the successes of her sons and one in particular. Warden Cohen openly shared how she first learned about one son who was addicted to opiates. She is proud of his success in recovery and credits his fiancée as the backbone to his stability. The knowledge gained as a result of her son’s addiction has resulted in Warden Cohen moving forward with the development of a “medication assisted treatment” (MAT) program at the Atlantic County Justice Facility. In fact Warden Cohen delayed her previous retirement date to ensure that the MAT program, which was 8 years in the making, was in place prior to her departure. Warden Cohen is most proud of the change in the perception of the line staff of the law enforcement culture from the “good ol’ boys club” to an environment

that provides opportunities for females as well as males without favoritism. There is currently a disproportionate number of female inmates to male inmates. The Warden said she would like to see more females on the night shift. Additionally, there are no female officers above the rank of Sergeant at this time who are eligible for advancement testing. Warden Cohen reported that her “life cycle” has prepared her to work in Corrections. She noted that what has kept her from “corrections officer burnout” is her great pride in “seeing people as people and not as a prisoner or inmate.” As Warden Cohen prepares for her retirement, she plans on exploring volunteer opportunities as well as spending time with her grand-niece. Warden Cohen’s advice for female Corrections Officers is to “be the officer you want to be.” These were words of wisdom that were given to Warden Cohen upon her entrance into the Corrections arena, and these are the words that she is now passing on to her fellow officers with her exit and as she prepares to begin the next chapter in life. Geraldine Cohen, an incredibly intelligent woman who is empowering and inspiring to female Corrections Officers. As this feature comes to a close, Warden Cohen will be close to her final days as the Warden of the Atlantic County Justice Facility. This feature is dedicated to Geraldine Cohen with sincere appreciation and gratitude for her years of service in the field of Corrections. Best regards in your retirement! Seasonal Allergies

S

pring has sprung. And as temperatures rise, an estimated 50 million Americans will be afflicted with runny and itchy noses, sneezing, coughing, puffy eyes, and even shortness of breath from seasonal allergies. Also referred to as hay fever or allergic rhinitis, these symptoms can be miserable and interfere with our sleep as well as exacerbate asthma symptoms or cause a sinus infection. And, unfortunately, there is no known cure for seasonal allergies. However, there is much in the way of prevention and treatment that can be done to help you survive. So, if you or a loved one is battling allergies, here are some helpful tips:

Dr. Nina’s What You Need To Know: About Allergy Season and How to Manage It

What is pollen? The fertilizing element of flowering trees, grass and weeds.

Due to its light weight, pollen is readily carried over large distances. And, as a result, it creates havoc for allergy suffers—facilitating its ability to land in our nostrils and enter our lungs. Depending on where you live, there are generally three pollen seasons—in the spring, trees and flowers; in the summer, grasses; and in the fall, leaves and weeds (and molds). How does pollen cause allergy symptoms? For some of us, our body mistakes pollen as a dangerous, foreign invader. And, as a result, it mounts a fierce, ”take-no-prisoners” attack where chemicals such as histamine or leukotrienes are released. They work in a concerted manner to evict the foreign invader by making you sneeze, your nose run, your eyes water, and cough. And although this is a clever disposal system when it comes to germs or other things that can make us sick, it can be agonizing.

What other problems can allergies cause? In addition to the miserable symptoms, seasonal allergy sufferers can experience a plethora of other health problems: • Sleep deprivation from nasal congestion or coughing that leads to daytime drowsiness and its associated problems—difficulty concentrating, grouchiness, and headaches, to name a few. • Asthmatics may see an exacerbation of their otherwise well-managed symptoms because pollen triggers it. • Chronic sinusitis can result from the chronic inflammation of the nasal passages along with mucus production that results in obstruction and subsequent bacterial obstruction. • There is also some research that suggests seasonal allergies can contribute to chronic fatigue syndrome and depression (possibly from sleep deprivation or triggered by inflammatory reactions in the body).

Keep pollen out of the home: • When you enter your home, make sure to park your shoes at the door, immediately change your clothes, and take a shower. • Use air-conditioning in the house or car instead of opening windows. • Wash bedding in hot water at least once a week. • Change air filters and choose high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters. They are specially designed to trap pollen and dust and can provide much-needed relief from pollen in the house. • Wipe down your pets before they enter the house.

What are some effective home remedies?

• Inhaling steam through your nose is a simple way to refresh and soothe irritated sinuses and help rid the nasal passages of mucus. You can boil several cups of water, then pour them into a big bowl, lean over the bowl, and drape a towel over your head. Then, breathe gently for 5 to 10 minutes. • Saline sprays can flush pollen out of our nasal passages, thin and clear mucus, and combat the drying effects of prescription allergy medications. They are available at most pharmacies and can also be made by mixing a teaspoon of salt into 1 quart of distilled or boiled water and using a baby aspirator to administer it once the water cools. • Neti pots are typically made of ceramic or plastic and can best be described as a cross between a small teapot and Aladdin’s magic lamp. They use a mechanism similar to saline sprays—the nasal cavities are rinsed with a saline solution to flush pollen out and soften mucus. The difference is that instead of squeezing a bottle, the “snout” of the pot delivers the solution.

What are some over-the-counter medications?

• Antihistamines relieve sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes and nose. Some examples are diphenhydramine, loratadine, cetirizine, and fexofenadine. • Decongestants alleviate nasal stuffiness by shrinking the lining of nasal passages. Some examples are pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine, and oxymetazoline. Always check with your pharmacist before starting any new medication—and always discuss all other medications you are taking prior to starting any new medications. Follow instructions on the label. And if you are not getting relief— DO NOT take more medication than recommended in an attempt to lessen your symptoms, but DO call your primary physician to determine which treatment is best for your symptoms. There are a number of prescription medications that can help.

What are some tips to survive allergy season?

If you know you suffer with seasonal allergies, start to protect yourself early on—if you have not already, take action now.

Reduce your exposure to triggers:

• Block pollen from landing on your eyes or nostrils by wearing a large-brim hat or cap and large sunglasses when outdoors. • Minimize time spent outdoors when pollen counts are high—this typically runs midday to afternoon—and also when it is windy.

Deaths And Costs Rise In New Alzheimer’s Association Report In a new report, Alzheimer’s Association 2018 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures, new findings show deaths from Alzheimer’s and related disorders increased 123% from 2000 to 2015, while deaths from other major diseases like HIV, heart disease and others decreased during the same time frame. In New Jersey alone 2,260 individuals died from Alzheimer’s disease in 2015, the latest year for which statistics are available. However, Alzheimer’s continues to be one of the most expensive diseases in the United States, costing an estimated $277 billion this year, with an expected rise to more than $1 trillion by 2050. The report also confirms Alzheimer’s remains the sixth leading cause of death in the nation and the only one among the top 10 without a cure, a way to prevent it or even slow its progression. Consequently, the disease is rapidly gaining ground – affecting more Americans more frequently. According to this year’s report, as many as 5.7 million people in the United States have Alzheimer’s, compared to 5.5 million last year when every 66 seconds someone developed the disease. Now, someone develops Alzheimer’s every 65 seconds. In New Jersey 180,000 people age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s and by 2025 that number is projected to rise to 210,000 – a 16.7% increase. Meanwhile, as many as 453,000 caregivers in the Garden State spent about 516 million hours last year providing unpaid medical care valued at more than $6 billion. The report also indicates the financial and medical impacts these family caregivers face. Last year dementia caregivers in New Jersey shelled out $352 million more than other caregivers on their own healthcare due to the health complications and emotional strain associated with providing care for a relative. Women in particular are affected the most: Throughout the United States almost two-thirds of all caregivers are women and one-third of dementia caregivers are daughters. “Families in the Delaware Valley, like so many others across the country, are facing tremendous financial hurdles on top of dealing with the emotional toll that affects both the person living with the disease and their care partners,” said Mary Beth Lewis, with the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter’s Atlantic County Branch Office. “It becomes even more of a strain for those who are diagnosed later in the disease progression.” In fact, a Special Report included in this year’s Facts and Figures report suggests the entire family benefits when some is diagnosed early. “An early diagnosis reduces healthcare costs because the person is getting the most appropriate care to help manage the disease,” said Lewis. “It also enables the person with the disease to plan for his or her own future while they are still able to make legal, financial and medical plans.”

They are also able to participate in clinical trials that could help advance research for a treatment or cure, spend more quality time with the most important people in their lives, or take advantage of educational opportunities or support groups. “We’re here to help anyone who is newly-diagnosed or is providing care for someone who has Alzheimer’s or another dementia,” explained Lewis. “We offer many free programs like support groups to the estimated eighty-five thousand people in South Jersey who are affected.”

The full Facts and Figures report is available at alz. org/facts. Anyone with questions or needs additional information may call the Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline, 800.272.3900.

Adopt Your New Best Friend Today The incredible bond between people and their pets and the many benefits that pets bring to our lives is a celebration of how positively animals can influence our lives. Pets not only provide their owners with companionship, but also with several health benefits. They may help lower blood pressure, heart rate and cholesterol levels and ease tension, anxiety and depression. When people come in contact with animals they tend to experience a general feeling of peace and wellbeing and are perceived as being more happy and healthy. Pet ownership increases the opportunity for exercise and socialization with other pet owners. The therapeutic value of animals for individuals in hospitals and nursing homes has also been documented. Children learn to be more nurturing and compassionate adults by being raised among animals. Taking guardianship of an animal that has been abandoned is a wonderful and fulfilling experience rewarded by unconditional love and companionship. Animal shelters and rescue groups appreciate the public’s support, as do the many pets that are fortunate to find forever homes. Kathy Kelsey Manager

Every Day Heroes in Your Community Ordinary people can do extraordinary things by volunteering their time to help others with the American Red Cross. You can have a positive impact on your community – and yes, help save lives. The Red Cross awarded some of its outstanding volunteers in Monmouth, Ocean and Atlantic Counties who go above and beyond to help others in need. Highlighted here are a few of the every day heroes honored recently.

American Red Cross of Southern Shore New Jersey

Providing Red Cross services in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem counties

Outstanding Volunteer Service Award Susanne and Harry Miller

Susanne and Harry Miller began volunteering with the Red Cross in early 2017, bringing their passion, energy, and sincere desire to help make a difference. Within a week, they both attended weekend-long training during the region’s Disaster Training Institute, displaying a zest for service that has yet to diminish. In one short year, both Susanne and Harry have been extremely active responding to home fires in southern New Jersey, helping provide Red Cross

emergency financial assistance to families displaced by fires. The couple also volunteers with Red Cross Blood Services, greeting and registering blood donors, as well as helping with blood transportation. When large disasters like Hurricanes Harvey and Irma hit, Susanne volunteered to deploy for two weeks to other parts of the country to assist with relief efforts. Most recently, she helped drive a Red Cross emergency response vehicle to Kentucky, where she helped those affected by major flooding in the state. The couple is also active with the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, volunteering during numerous Sound the Alarm home fire safety and free smoke alarm installation events. Susanne and Harry are dedicated volunteers willing to jump in to help with special projects like Disaster Services shelter surveys or to work at Service to the Armed Forces events helping veterans. Susanne and Harry Miller are amazing assets to the Red Cross and the people of New Jersey.

American Red Cross Jersey Coast

Providing Red Cross services in Ocean and Monmouth counties

Outstanding Volunteer Service Award Jodi Bocco

Jodi Bocco’s dedication to the safety and wellbeing of disaster victims is what drives her and makes her one of the Red Cross New Jersey Region’s most cherished Disaster Mental Health Services volunteers. Her compassion for those affected by disasters, as well as for fellow members of the Red Cross Disaster Services team, is constant. She is professional, dedicated, and selfless, demonstrating a calmness that is infectious and has a huge impact on those around her, which is particularly important during times of disaster. Jodi has been a volunteer with the American Red Cross for more than five years. This past year, Jodi volunteered virtually as a Disaster Mental Health worker following large disasters like Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, and the wildfires in California. She provides a compassionate ear and effective coping mechanisms while working with people in very difficult situations.
