Breastfeeding: “A True Gift” The topic for this issue is breastfeeding. This is a true gift! It is a gift that a woman has the ability to feed her baby. It is also a gift of love from Mom to her newborn baby. This ability to sustain life is a special thing. During pregnancy, a woman’s body begins to prepare for hypertrophy, meaning they get enlarge and may become darker glands (milk ducts) that are contained in the areola that also Nature prepares a pregnant woman for the birth and feeding of her baby. During labor and following delivery, certain hormones are produced that cause the body properties that help to protect the newborn until his or her own immune system is will become more opaque and white to yellow in color. As the baby begins to breast feed, a complex hormonal release of prolactin and oxytocin (to name a few) fosters the breastfeeding process. tremendous amount of calories, which translates into weight loss for Mom. Well, the baby is born with a special fat layer that helps to provide additional calorie there at any one time. Although the art of breastfeeding on face value may seem to be an easy process, it takes patience and practice for both the mom and baby. Essentially they both

Coolsculpting: Choose Your Provider Carefully!! Coolsculpting has become a popular way to sculpt your body and remove areas of unwanted fat. Because of its popularity, more and more facilities have started to offer treatments. Deciding who does your treatment is an extremely important decision! We often receive phone calls from people wanting to know how much we charge for Coolsculpting. We insist on a free, personalized consultation to give you an honest and reliable answer. Three factors impact the price of your treatment plan. First, how many areas do you want to treat? Your abdomen only or abdomen and flanks? Maybe you want your thighs treated too? Second, how much fat do you have in that area? There are 9 different Coolsculpting applicators that, when used appropriately, will give you amazing results. The choice of applicator is determined by your body shape and size as well as how much fat you have. Choosing the proper applicators is one of the most important factors that determine if you get a great result, no result or a bad result. Lastly, what kind of results are you looking to obtain? Each treatment removes a layer of fat cells (about 20% from the area). If you are looking for a slight change, a single round of treatments may give you the results you are looking for. For others who have more fat or want more fat removed, two to three treatments may be appropriate. There is “no one size fits all.” See the pictures below: two very different bodies required very different treatments. Our clients find that they receive a great value for their money because their results are lasting and we guarantee a result. We often have people looking for pricing over the phone after receiving a consult elsewhere. They can’t understand why we would insist on doing another consult ourselves. We have found over the years that when someone has visited another provider and was quoted a treatment plan, it typically varies widely from the one we build. Our experience and training allow for the most reliable consult. Did you know 70% of your outcome is dependent on who does your treatment, which applicators are used and how they are placed? Though Coolsculpting has a wonderful reputation, not all technicians are created equal. At Accent Aesthetics our technicians have the highest level of certification offered through Coolsculpting University and Coolsculpting Masters training. In fact we are the only facility in South Jersey with Masters level training. This level of training, combined with thousands of hours of Coolsculpting experience, ensures you will get the best results. Sadly, many offices lack training and experience. Lack of training and experience puts your results at risk! You may get no result or, worse, a botched result, leaving you deformed and in need of other treatments. Providers offering cheap treatments do so for a reason.

The biggest concern we hear is investing time and money into a body transformation procedure that does not work. We are so confident in our consultations and results that we stand behind them, with the Accent Aesthetics commitment to quality! If after 4 months there are no visible results and you are within 3 lbs of your treatment weight, we will reassess you at 5 months. If there is still no visible change, we will re-treat the area at no additional charge. We take before and after pictures on every client so that we can honestly and accurately assess their results.

We invite you to schedule a free Coolsculpting consultation and experience the Accent Aesthetics commitment to quality yourself!

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Make a difference! Spread the word about mammograms and encourage communities, organizations, families, and individuals to get involved. Meet The Extraordinary Nurses From Bayada

Pictured L-R: Kimberly Walk, Kelly Hynes and Mary Villanueva Kimberly Walk, RN

Kelly Hynes, RN

BAYADA Clinical Associate

BAYADA Clinical Manager

BAYADA Clinical Associate Kimberly Walk first experienced the joy of helping others soon after graduating from high school. “I became a nursing assistant at a local nursing home and discovered I had a gift for taking care of the elderly and sick,” she said. “I knew I wanted to continue that care in a new and challenging way as a nurse. I had the opportunity to witness the difference nurses make in the lives of their patients and knew immediately that’s what I wanted to do.” Kimberly has been making a positive difference with her patients at BAYADA for 12 years, first as a nurse providing direct care, and now as a clinical associate. In her current role she draws on her leadership skills to provide clinical supervision and oversight for a number of patients and their nursing care teams. Kimberly’s experience also includes working as a nurse at the Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation. She earned her LPN from Cape May County College and an Associates in Science of Nursing from Excelsior College in Albany, NY. When she is not working, it’s a good bet you’ll find her rooting on her two teenage boys who are active in sports or spending time outdoors with her husband or girlfriends. “We have the genuine opportunity to make a beautiful and positive impact on someone’s life, and that is something I consider a privilege and a joy,” she said. “I love what I do and I always have.”

When asked what drew her to a career in nursing, BAYADA Clinical Manager Kelly Hynes, RN, didn’t hesitate with her response. “Helping people at their most vulnerable time is a privilege, said Kelly, who joined BAYADA in July, 2017. “It’s that feeling of belonging that connects us to each other and a shared purpose.” A graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes School of Nursing in Camden, NJ, Kelly drew on her unlimited supply of compassion when she worked with dementia and hospice patients as a nursing supervisor at United Methodist Homes at the Shore. She fondly recalls caring for one of her patients, an elderly gentleman whose daughter worked for BAYADA at the time. “Little did I know I was being interviewed for a BAYADA position years prior to even realizing it!” she shared. Indeed, when the clinical manager position at BAYADA became available, Kelly was the perfect fit. Now, she uses her expertise to supervise home nursing care for patients with a wide range of complex medical conditions. Thanks to her skills and the nurses who proudly work on her team, these patients can remain in the comfort of home with their families, and where they want to be. When she is not working she enjoys spending time with her mini dachshunds, Moss and Norman, who she refers to as her ‘salty little weiners’. She is also grateful to be loved by her best friend Justin Nomland.

Mary Villanueva, RN, BSN Clinical Manager BAYADA Home Health Care

After many years as a hospital nurse near and far—she worked in the trauma center of a major South Jersey hospital as well as in Saudi Arabia— Mary craved the one-on-one relationship that home care offers. She joined BAYADA three years ago, providing care that enabled clients to remain safely at home. Mary was Recently promoted to a clinical manager, where she now has the opportunity to oversee all of the services that are given to her clients. She supports her nurses and enjoys working with all members of the care team. She says the best part of her job is “collaborating across disciplines to positively affect a client’s plan of care.” Mary is actively involved in many charitable events including dragon boat racing to support breast cancer research. She is also a member of N.O.D. (Nurses on Deployment), a suicide awareness and prevention group that uses activity and healthy lifestyle changes to promote wellness. Mary enjoys spending time with her family: husband, Ronald Villanueva and their son, Chris; her daughters, Monique and Maritza Brown; and her stepdaughter—or bonus daughter, as Mary says— Aida Villanueva. She is also looking forward to taking on a new title, “Lolli” to her first grandbaby boy, due in December!

Lymphedema: What You Need To Know Written by Laura Goellner, OTR/L, E-RYT, LMT, C-IAYT

Cancer treatment, such as radiation therapy or surgery, can cause damage to the lymphatic system. This may result in a type of swelling called lymphedema. Lymphedema can impact any part of the body. In some cases, lymphedema of the arm or hand can develop after treatment for breast cancer. Fortunately this swelling can be managed through the use of compression garments, compression wrapping and manual lymphatic drainage. The lymphatic system can be compared to the filtration system of an aquarium. It keeps fluids moving and ensures that waste products are removed so the cells stay healthy. Your entire body has a network of tiny vessels that are responsible for moving and filtering that fluid. The lymphatic system is often called the “forgotten system” because it is hardly ever talked about. Fortunately this essential system is starting to garner more attention for its role in immune function, overall wellness, pain management and even cognitive function. So, what can we do to support the lymphatic system? Movement is one of the most important things that we can do to support our lymphatic system. Movement activates what is called the “muscle pump” effect. As our muscles contract and relax to move the joints, the lymphatic vessels are also stimulated. Taking a walk, practicing yoga, swimming and water aerobics are especially helpful. If you would like to learn more about taking care of your lymphatic system or managing swelling, contact Laura Goellner, OTR/L and Certified Lymphedema Therapist.

and grandchildren through trial and triumph. For many of us, our grandparents were among our earliest teachers and caregivers. They have added immeasurably to the strength of our families, and with compassion and wisdom, they have enriched our lives with the stories of those who came before us. On National Grandparent’s Day, we give thanks to those who helped raise us and pay tribute to a generation that still inspires us toward brighter horizons.

Why Arthritis Affects Women More Than Men Written by Fabio Orozco, MD, Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon

Do you have aches and pains in your joints that are affecting quality of life? Would you be surprised to learn that women are more likely to develop arthritis than men? Would it be even more surprising to learn that women are more likely to develop knee arthritis while men are more prone to hip arthritis? Osteoarthritis is a chronic progressive condition that results from wear and tear on the cartilage between the joint spaces. This is commonly found in the fingers, back, knee and hip joints. Arthritis is an age-related condition that usually becomes most apparent in our fourth or fifth decade of life when symptoms develop. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which is not due to wear and tear but an inflammatory reaction that occurs in the body, is an autoimmune condition that may present differently than traditional arthritis. Arthritis can cause an array of symptoms including swelling, pain, stiffness, deformity of the joint, and instability. Most people will not seek care until the condition has worsened to the point where it has started to affect quality of life. This can be unique to an individual but can be the inability to participate in activities such as walking, exercise, or simply having more days with pain than days without. Women are more likely to present with more advanced stages of arthritis, report significantly higher levels of pain and disability, and show arthritis progression in the patellofemoral joint more often than men. Why women are more prone to develop arthritis of the knee is multi-factorial. One reason for this is the laxity of the tendons that support the knee. Women are more likely to experience injuries in part due to the elasticity of their joints to accommodate childbirth. Estrogen acts as a protectant to inflammation for women. However, once a woman reaches menopause, her hormone levels drop, resulting in the development of arthritis equal to that of men. That historic hourglass figure contributes to an increase in arthritis due to wider hips than men, which leaves their knees more vulnerable to alignment challenges of the knees. This may result in leg alignment deformities, varus or valgus or bowlegged vs knock-knee. This change in the straightness of the legs can cause knee pain, pain walking, and back pain. Obesity rates for men and women in the United States are similar; however, those extra pounds on a female frame are more likely to affect the knees due to the way fat is distributed on a female than a male. Women generally carry excess weight on their hips and thighs. This further exacerbates the hip span, leading to more pressure and erosion of the cartilage.

Heredity also can predispose a woman to arthritis. Arthritis can run in families, just like high blood pressure and diabetes, but is more common amongst females than males. It is very likely that you and your mom both may have arthritis at a similar age and in the same joint. What can be done for arthritis? Arthritis in its earliest form can be treated conservatively with over-the-counter medications like nonsteroidal antiinflammatories, activity modification, exercise, and weight loss. Losing just 10 pounds can take 40 pounds of pressure off the knees. Once these self-treatments are not able to provide relief, it may be time to see your doctor. Diagnosis is made based on x-rays, symptoms, and physical examination. Treatment options include prescription anti-inflammatories, formal physical therapy, formal weight loss programs, cortisone injections, viscosupplementation injections, and/or surgery. Surgery options include partial or total knee replacement or arthroplasty, which is performed to treat advanced osteoarthritis when all other conservative treatment measures have been exhausted. A joint replacement will restore the functionality of the knee, minimizing pain caused by the rubbing of bone-on-bone arthritis, and provide stability back to the knee. Surgical techniques have improved since your mother’s knee replacement. Gone are the days of lengthy hospital stays followed by weeks at inpatient rehabilitation centers. At Orozco Orthopaedics, we perform robotic-assisted partial and total knee replacements without cutting the quadriceps tendon, which improves the early function of the patient after surgery. Today patients are going home the day of or the next day after surgery. Physical therapy can be completed independently by the patient or through an outpatient facility in just a few weeks. Today arthritis does not have to mean the end of your favorite activities. You can still get back to the activities that you love with advances in treatment options.

For more information contact us: 609-300-7779.

Dr. Fabio Orozco is a board-certified hip and knee surgeon with over 15 years of experience. Dr. Orozco has helped over ten thousand people get their lives back through surgery. Dr. Orozco is an expert in robotic surgery and uses the latest less-invasive surgical techniques, including direct anterior hip replacement and quadriceps-sparing partial and total knee replacements. He serves as the Director of Orthopaedic Surgery at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.

Financial Management

Reaction To Reality: Should I Reassess My Risks? “A Big Part of Financial Freedom Is Having Your Heart and Mind Free From Worry About the What-Ifs of Life” - Suze Orman For many of us COVID-19 has caused a reaction to reality: Should I reassess my risks? We all have a renewed sense of just how fragile we are, and are evaluating the steps we can take to reduce that fragility. In terms of family financial security, there are ideas you can act on to reduce some risks immediately, moves that have little or no costs associated with them. A recent Forbes article has highlighted a survey suggesting a renewed focus on estate planning has arisen as we consider our mortality, and highlighted these steps we often recommend: 1. Share passwords and make arrangements for digital assets. 2. Create a medical directive (Living Will). 3. Aggregate and inventory your assets. 4. Create a Will, Power of Attorney, or Trust. Communication is one of the keys to success, and the key to communication is information. If you don’t know what you own and how you own it, it’s going to be difficult for others to get that information too. If your passwords are all in your fingerprint or face ID, what happens when that fingerprint is no longer available to unlock those accounts? Once an inventory of both physical and digital assets is created, you can move on to the next step of creating an asset distribution plan. The plan should answer these questions: Who will inherit? What or how much will each beneficiary inherit? When will they inherit (immediately or at a future date)? If the inheritance is delayed, who will manage the assets in the meantime? Once you have the answers to these questions, it will be much easier to create a will or trust. At that point you can also better assess your own needs, and consider the divesture [I think this should be “divestiture” but since it’s sued multiple times, maybe check

with author] of particular assets to reduce confusion and arguments and take them out of the estate settlement process. The sentiments, value, or origin stories of particular objects often get lost because it is believed that the beneficiaries already know those details. Approaching the divesture head-on can preserve that sentimental value because a conversation is had about the divesture as it’s occurring. Having an estate plan in place provides some peace of mind that may be really needed right now for loved ones, and also could have a tremendous impact should the worst come to pass. Proper estate planning helps preserve not only assets, but also independence, dignity, and values. Should I be considering other risk mitigation? It isn’t always wise to reduce risk, and sometimes risk reduction for one item implicitly increases the risk of another. These strategies can have tradeoffs such as: • Reduction of exposure to gains in the stock market can increase portfolio stability (especially in volatile times), but historically increases the risk of reduction of purchasing power due to inflation. • Tax-preferred retirement accounts will increase the growth of assets over a long time-horizon, but also subject them to penalties should the money be needed before retirement age. • A term life-insurance policy may only be needed to protect dependents for a short time, but may lapse before ever being utilized. There are many factors to take into consideration when determining what the appropriate amount of risk is for a person’s unique circumstances, such as their time horizon, liquidity needs, or dependent’s needs. Every situation is different, and the professionals at Garden State Trust Company can review these risk factors and tradeoffs with you to assess your risk tolerance and so you can understand what strategies might be most appropriate to create family financial security.

Reliance Medical Group: The Benefits of Telemedicine and Vaccinating Your Children One of the prevailing tenants at Reliance Medical Group is that access to quality healthcare is an absolute right, not a privilege. That statement rings true now more than ever before. Covid-19 has impacted the way we live and forced us to make important social and behavioral changes in practically every area of our lives. These behavior changes will become part of our “new normal” and is precisely why the technology of telemedicine is so critical right now. Essentially, telemedicine allows health care professionals to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients in remote locations using telecommunications technology. Patients in remote locations can access medical expertise quickly, efficiently, and most importantly without travel. By using remote monitoring and telemedicine physicians can continue to monitor their patients health without skipping a beat. Whether it’s pediatrics, women’s health, or adult medicine, Reliance Medical Group has implemented systems to continue their effective treatment. Telemedicine does not mean that you’ll never visit a doctor’s office again. But it does make care more accessible and affordable in many cases. Most importantly, it can reduce the time you spend in your doctor’s waiting room. The need for more accessible healthcare is a driving force behind the growth of telemedicine. Whether a patient lives in a remote area or has a busy schedule that doesn’t allow time to visit their physician, this technology allows them access. Further, using telemedicine has been shown to allow for better long-term care management as well as patient satisfaction. For the patient, it becomes extremely convenient and encourages them to assume greater responsibility for their own care. As advances in technology are made, telemedicine will become even more sophisticated. Reliance Medical Group continues to lead the way as a progressive, multi-specialty practice with various locations through the state. Their patients will continue to access the affordable managed medical care and their experienced physicians. Although healthcare today has a very different look, the level of care remains the same. Remember, taking care of your health (especially in these times) is the greatest gift you can give to yourself as well as your family. Your family’s vaccine schedule is a significant part of their wellness. For kids entering 6th grade, the state has mandated they be protected against pertussis and neisseria meningitis. The former causes whooping cough, the latter lethal meningitis. The two vaccines for this are called Adacel and Menactra. While pertussis is a more common infection, human beings are the only known host and the only way to protect yourself is to be vaccinated. The Chinese have called pertussis, “the cough of one hundred days.” The importance for new parents to get this vaccine cannot be overstated. Unfortunately, the incidence of pertussis has increased from 3000 cases annually in the 1970’s to 25,000 cases in the 2010’s. The fatality rate has almost tripled. Another essential vaccine for adolescents is Gardasil. It protects against cancers caused by the Human Papillomavirus. Originally this vaccine was used to protect women from cervical cancer. However, research has demonstrated that the Human Papillomavirus causes other cancers in both men and women. In fact, there are over 33,000 new cases of Human Papillomavirus cancers every year.

15 Medical Professionals Do You Have Dry Hands During These Trying Times?

Lisa Ledden

We all know that frequent hand washing is essential to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. But science also reveals that dry, cracked skin also makes it easier for bacteria and viruses to enter your body.

3. Always use warm, NOT HOT, water. 4. Consider using a bedroom humidifier – it helps keep the skin hydrated. 5. Keep a sample of moisturizer in your purse or pocket at all times. We have lots of samples in our office, just call Donna @ 609-940-3100 and we’ll be happy to share!! We’re in Somers Point Mondays thru Thursdays.  If you are unable to repair your dry skin with home-based remedies, schedule an appointment. There are prescription creams that work well to heal dry, itchy or cracked skin.

So what should we do? If you have dry hands, you must continue to wash them. Moisturizers that are fragrance-free and emollient-based help heal dry skin.

Certified Dermatology

HANDWASHING – The How To’s

1. Wash your hands in lukewarm water for at least 20 seconds using soap. 2. Dry your hands, leaving them slightly damp. 3. Apply a cream or ointment moisturizer – preferred rather than a lotion – to slightly damp skin.

Specializing in General and Cosmetic Dermatology

What about HAND SANITIZER? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends using a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol to kill germs, but hand sanitizer can be very drying. There is no evidence that using a hand sanitizer makes it easier to pick up germs. It’s dry skin that increases your risk of picking up germs. If you have dry skin from using hand sanitizer, apply moisturizer immediately after your hand sanitizer dries.

Other helpful tips:

1. If your hands are frequently immersed in water, such as cleaning or washing dishes, wear elbow-length gloves. 2. Before bed, apply an ointment-based emollient, such as Vaseline; cover your hands with white cotton gloves and allow to penetrate the skin while you sleep.

The 3 C’s: Covid, Custody & Co-Parenting By Marla Marinucci, Esq.

Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers® Certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Matrimonial Law Attorney

No doubt these are unprecedented times. Between the Covid-19 pandemic, the upcoming election, recent crazy weather events (a tornado touched down in Ocean City a few days ago), and a slew of other strange events, it has been difficult to find a silver lining in anything recently. I have always tried to find at least one positive aspect in everything, regardless of how negative a situation is.

For example, as family law attorneys, something we have been wanting for years has been the ability to file documents electronically. Other courts and divisions have had electronic filing for many years, but not in the family part. Thanks to the pandemic, we now have electronic filing, and it is awesome. It has made life so much easier, and for the most part has had the effect of expediting things. Additionally, while I was initially not a big fan of having court appearances done via Zoom or other digital platform, I cannot imagine ever going back to having all in-person court hearings and am enjoying not paying $10 to park every time I have court in Atlantic City. I also cannot remember the last time I wore a suit, which has been another huge plus. Granted, in no way do I believe that this pandemic has been a good thing. The point I am trying to make is that out of bad, can come good. Let’s talk about custody and the effects Covid-19 is having on coparenting. Take, for example, the Governor’s order to close all schools starting in mid-March. I was so thrilled to learn of many situations of parents (divorced or just not together anymore) who successfully, and without court intervention, co-parented with each other to modify parenting time in light of the new normal: remote learning. In nearly every case of this kind that I heard about where the parents worked things out themselves, the noncustodial parent’s time increased substantially. No doubt there were plenty of cases that had the opposite result whereby one party used the pandemic as a shield in an attempt to prevent the other party from having any parenting time at all. However, I found that such a tactic was immediately shut down by the Court absent certain unique circumstances that warranted a suspension of parenting time to one party.

There are many cases that, due to distance (i.e., the parents reside in different states far apart), one parent is not able to enjoy much parenting time during the school year because it’s either too expensive (requires plane tickets) or there are not enough school breaks to warrant parenting time beyond Christmas break, spring break, and the summer. Even if an agreement states that one party is entitled to all three-day weekends during the school year, that is hardly enough time for anyone, nor is it fair to the child, because if it involves flying, there will be substantial time spent in the airport on two of the three days, and it’s just plain exhausting. With Covid-19 and the advent of remote learning, now is the time for the non-custodial parent, who rarely gets to see their child/children during the school year due to geography, to enjoy more parenting time. This applies to parents who live near each other as well. From what I have gleaned online, most school districts nationwide are offering a few different options for the 2020-2021 school year, including a hybrid schedule that involves a combination of in-person learning and remote learning, as well as an all-remote-learning option. As of the time of this writing, it appears possible that the Governor in New Jersey could once again order that schools in New Jersey close again out of safety precautions for the staff and the students. Assuming there are no parental fitness issues involved, and the pre-pandemic parenting schedule was determined based on each party’s work schedules at the time, and of course the child actually attending school, if one or both parents are now working from home, AND your child’s school is either one that involves two or three days of remote learning and two or three days of in-person learning, or all-remote learning, now is the time to flex those atrophied co-parenting muscles and take advantage of these unprecedented times. It is the child’s right to spend as much time as possible with both parents. More often than not, one parent spends far too much time and energy limiting the other parent’s time with the child for reasons that have nothing to do with the safety of the child, and for the most part are founded in spitefulness. Remote learning can be done anywhere, near and far. A child who lives with Mom and attends school in New Jersey and whose school has implemented an all-remote learning plan can follow that same plan with Dad, who lives in California, and with whom the child may not spend a lot of time due to distance and school. Temporarily modifying a parenting plan does not require a court order provided both parties agree. This is what co-parenting is all about.

Meet Olga Rhile from Russell & Marinucci, Esq. In the field of matrimonial law, communication and compassion reign supreme. The firm of Russell & Marinucci has over 60 years of combined family law experience and is well equipped to handle a variety of family law matters. By allowing them into your life at this challenging time, you can rest assured that they will have your best interests at heart and you will be protected every step of the way. The decision to divorce, or just being involved in any other contested family law matter, can be a very painful and stressful experience. Be sure you have the right team in your corner and on your side. A paralegal is known as an attorney’s “right hand.” Their job is a critical part of the divorce process. Olga Rhile works with the lawyers to help with your case and can alleviate some of the stress during this overwhelming time.

ACW: What do you enjoy most about working with Marla as well as the matrimonial field in general?

Olga: It is rare to find an employer as kind as Marla. I have found that with many employers, they run their business with an iron fist. In other words, it’s “their way or no way.” We work as a team in our office which makes for a much more pleasant environment. Marla is extremely supportive and always open to ideas and suggestions, which is extremely beneficial in this profession. I enjoy working in the matrimonial field because we are able to help our clients and their families through a very difficult and confusing time in their lives.

ACW: What is a common misconception about being a paralegal?

Olga: One prevailing misconception about paralegals is that people think we can give advice and assist them in maneuvering through the

law. Even if a paralegal is well acquainted with a specific law, statute, or ordinance, that does not mean we can give legal advice. We are the right hand of our attorney, not an attorney.

ACW: What is the most challenging part of your profession?

Olga: A challenging aspect of being a paralegal is not only making sure that we are on track, but that our attorney is as well. A paralegal is the backbone of an attorney. As such, we should strive to know what our attorney needs, even before they realize their need. Even though we work “under the direction of an attorney,” it is our written and verbal exchanges that are on display. It is our job to help our attorney look good and be able to perform their duties well.

ACW: How have the effects of the pandemic changed your professional life?

Olga: On a professional level, the pandemic has abolished any faceto-face meetings with our clients, for theirs and our safety. I feel it is important for our client(s), as well as us to physically see and communicate in person. Yes, there are video conferencing options, but it is just not the same as physically speaking with each other. I believe this to be true not only for myself, but for many other professions as well. I wish good health to all throughout this very trying time in our history. ACW: Tell us a little bit about your background. Olga: I was raised in North Dakota where I met and married my husband, who is from Cape May County. I am a stepmother to two wonderful children and a “Mimi” to our beautiful granddaughter. I graduated from Atlantic Cape Community College, obtaining an ABA approved AAS in Paralegal Studies. I will be attending Rutgers in the fall, studying Political Science. I love to cook, garden, and spend time with my family.

Are You In Need Of New Bras That Fit Well? Fit For Fall!

When it comes to undergarments the right fit is key; but comfort is important too and the ladies at Bra Boudoir believe that wholeheartedly. Owner Julia Mastalski has the expertise and knowledge to help you shop for those crucial foundation pieces, as well as those for special occasions. In fact, many of her clients set up a private appointment which will ensure they get the precise fit that is right for their body type. During a private appointment customers can try on lingerie, shape wear, and lounge wear. When getting your fitting at the Bra Boudoir, you will notice there is no use of measuring tape since it has been proven to be inaccurate. Julia adds, “We use a trial and error method, trying on different bras until we find out the size and style that works best for you.”Finding bras or shapewear that not only provide support, but also

complement your body, is a real game changer. If you have ever gone to a department store to shop for a bra then you know how frustrating it can be. The problem is that most of these large chain stores do not train their employees in proper sizing techniques and they don’t carry the sizes many women need to feel comfortable. Julia’s team at the Bra Boudoir has been trained in New York City by an amazing group of bra fitting experts. After fitting hundreds of women with a vast array of body and breast types, it is safe to say they know what they are talking about. Julia has witnessed the transformation that occurs when a customer leaves her boutique feeling happy and confident, all because of an amazing bra fitting. Her knowledge of garment construction and passion for helping people is evident the moment you meet her.New arrivals come in on a monthly basis so be sure and pay her a visit and stock up on all your basic needs. The Bra Boudoir also has gift certificates for sale, for that girl or woman in your life you know deserves to look and feel her best. Book your fitting on our website today; you will be more than happy with your decision.

Testimonial “I had the pleasure of going there today to have a fitting. I was treated so well I forgot that I was bra shopping. Not only did Julia take the time to help me, she even went above that to tell me bras can be ordered. I’m not small in the breast area by any means and shopping for bras really gets me upset. But not here. They have cute bras that made me feel sexy as a wife and woman. Thank you so much.” – Jennifer

Women And Their Feet

HIGH HEELS

Women inflict more punishment on their feet than men, in part from improper footwear that can bring about unnecessary foot problems. Some of the problems result from high-heeled shoes (generally defined as pumps with heels of more than two inches). Doctors of podiatric medicine believe such heels are medically unsound, and attribute postural and even safety problems to their use. Women face increased pressure, due to fashion and changing models, to wear shoes that are not always best for their feet. With more women working outside of the home, their feet are taking even more punishment, and the footwear that some feel obliged to wear in the workplace may be playing a role.

Wearing high-heeled shoes will cause many foot problems over time. Podiatrists in general will not recommend wearing high-heeled shoes for long periods of time. They believe them to be biomechanically and orthopedically unsound. High-heeled shoes may contribute to knee and back problems, injuries and falls, shortening of the calf muscle, and an awkward and unnatural gait. Over time high-heeled shoes can cause enough changes in the foot to impair proper function of the foot. Most women admit that high heels make their feet hurt, but they tolerate the discomfort in order to look taller, stylish, and more professional. If you are not willing give up very high-heeled shoes, there are some ways to relieve some of the aggressive effects. Limiting the time spent wearing them and alternating with a good quality Oxford-type shoe or flats for everyday use can be helpful. Arch supports can also be added to high heels to gain slightly Stuart W. Honick, D.P.M., P.T. more comfort. The key is wearing the right shoe for the right activity -- and that means varying heel height, determining what heel is most suitable. There are comfortable and attractive walking pumps for women for work and social activities. These pumps offer fashion with athletic shoe-derived construction with reinforced heels and wider toe room. They use space-age materials -- like long-lasting memory cushioning that acts as a shock absorber -- and the soles are more pliable.

PREGNANCY

Pregnant women need to observe good foot health to prevent pain and discomfort. With the body undergoing changes in acquiring a new weightbearing stance, women should wear shoes with broad-based heels that provide support and absorb shock. The expectant mother often experiences increased swelling of her feet and ankles, which can aggravate existing foot conditions. Pregnancy also triggers release of hormones that increase laxity of ligaments, which can contribute to foot strain. If problems develop, she should see her podiatrist as soon as possible.

WOMEN OVER 65

As women age, they have more trouble with their feet than when they were younger. The fat pads on the bottom of the feet will atrophy or deteriorate during the aging process. Arthritis is also more prevalent as they age. Many foot deformities occur, such as bunions, hammertoes, neuromas, and pump bumps, all contributing to foot pain. Dr. Honick has been trained specifically and extensively in the diagnosis and treatment of all manner of foot conditions. This training encompasses all of the intricately related systems and structures of the foot and lower leg, including neurological, circulatory, skin and the musculoskeletal system, which includes bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves.

Health & Wellness Alleviating Fear Through Yoga Practice

21

Heidi Farber

It seems that we are living in a time of pervasive fear. What are you afraid of? Destructive leaders in the world? Economic upheaval? War? Disease? Crises brought on by our neglected planet? Are you living in a trance of fear? Worrying and anticipating only take us away from the precious moments of life. When we give in to fear, we cease to truly live. Love and creativity are missed when thoughts and strong emotions take over and obscure the beauty and goodness in the world. If you bring compassion and mindfulness to the experience of fear, you will dissolve the spell you are under. We expend a huge portion of our energy dealing with fear and anxiety. But our fears are not just the product of global events. Oftentimes we live with an everyday reality that is tinged with personal and cultural concern. Our fears go to our very core. Fear motivates how we act and react. It affects how we stand and talk and can make life dark and narrow. It is the root of all conflict, underlying much of our sorrow. Fear blocks intimacy and love. But more than anything, it disconnects us from loving kindness that is our true nature. It reinforces the sense of separateness. Healing and peace can’t co-exist with fear. Early on in life we learn to be afraid of anything that can cause pain. In a healthy sense, this is a good way to ensure survival and create the conditions necessary for safety and well-being. Buddha says that useful fear prepares us to take skillful action and reduce harm. But he also warns of the “fear that makes us see a cobra where a piece of rope has cast a shadow.” Fear can easily slip into anxiety. While fear is a signal that we are about to face imminent danger, alerting our body and nervous system of a threat, anxiety by contrast is response to a future hazard or inner conflict. Anxiety is a feeling of dread that something unwanted may be coming, but when and how is unknowable and beyond one’s control. A central component of spiritual life is recognizing that practice is not about ensuring that we feel secure or comfortable. It’s not that we won’t feel these things when we practice, but rather it’s that we are bound to sometimes feel insecure and uncomfortable when we are exploring and working with emotions and unhealed pain. Our fundamental security develops out of the willingness to stay with and truly experience our fears. Isn’t it ironic that the path to feeling secure comes from residing in the fear of insecurity itself. Feelings of uncertainty can also manifest as fear of helplessness, which can surface as the fear of losing control or being controlled. Fear of chaos or the unfamiliar may give rise to rage, which can give us a temporary feeling of control and even power. We all dread the powerlessness of losing control. Yet real freedom lies in recognizing the futility of expecting our lives to be within our control. Instead, we can learn the willingness to feel and say yes to the experience of helplessness. When we understand fear, it loses its power. Yoga offers us the opportunity to examine fear and practice courage. Fear can be a vehicle for transformation when we take conscious steps to learn from it. If you try to insulate yourself from fear, you will only make yourself more susceptible to it. We are not immune from loss, change and pain. If we think we are, it is a form of magical thinking, which is part of the ego. What is most deeply you cannot be lost. If we recognize thoughts and feelings as just what they are—movements of emotional energy, nothing more—we can dissolve them. Watch your repetitive thought patterns surface and dissipate. Face your fears with courage and curiosity. Invite what may be hidden from view, sources of discontent and confusion. Sit beside it and be with your misapprehension. By giving it some space, you can disarm it. What is this needing? Maybe it requires kindness. Discover loving

awareness that is your true nature. When living and loving fully, you will awaken. This is the essence of healing. Fear only reinforces the sense of separateness and takes us out of the place where peace and healing are possible. Fear is a natural reaction to things that we don’t understand. It reminds us that we are human and vulnerable. To work with fear, we have to welcome it in, treat it kindly and begin to have a relationship with it. This will make space for fear to relax. Bear witness to fear and notice how it manifests itself. On a physical level muscles begin to tense and we feel the armor of the body harden in defense. Breathe with your fear, bringing awareness to self. Safely hold it at a safe distance. Offer up some compassion to the sensations. Let go of the resistance to fear and let it be as it needs to be. Feel the shift as you soften, creating the possibility for more openness, freedom and joy. Here are some ways in which we can work with fear. Say, “I am not my fear, I am the awareness that knows fear.” Sitting in a comfortable position with the eyes closed or with a gentle gaze, breathe slowly in and out. Focus on bodily sensations of breathing. Notice as your breath expands and contracts in the abdomen. A storyline may appear to give rise to your fear. Breathe into and relax areas around the fear. Make space for fear, allowing it to grow, even though it is uncomfortable. Recognize the impulse to avoid it. Investigate how sensations change and nurture the anxiety. Become aware of the activity in your mind. Is it calm or agitated? Is it focused or scattered? Bring a sense of clarity and ease to whatever you see. Attend to emotions and begin to transform them into useful energies that express our needs and guide us through life. Feel the breath as alive, flowing energy and sensation throughout your entire body. Sense how all the energies of the body are moving smoothly and harmoniously. Life presents us with a constant stream of circumstances that threaten to cause anxiety and fear. We can learn to send positive energy through our bodies and move along with a calm mind free from fear. Yoga practice can be a wonderful tool in the process of alleviating fears. With asana or posture exercise, breathing techniques and meditation, we can begin to understand our insecurities. Bringing insight and wisdom into our lives is the beginning of transformation. It is a continual journey of awakening. The path is fraught with many obstacles and roadblocks, but we are fearless in the face of it all. Bring unconditional presence to fear and allow for spiritual awakening. Meet this moment with kindness and mindfulness. Courage, compassion, and patience are our watchwords as we move through life. Then we are no longer overwhelmed or possessed with fear. Buddha said, “Fear is great, but greater yet is the truth of our essential connectedness.”

Meet Pamela Quattrone, Esq. From Rice Elder Law

Pamela Quattrone navigates all areas of Elder Law for her clients and dedicates her practice to estate tax, long-term care planning, and litigation related to those areas. This is a unique area of the law that includes representing and counseling seniors and their families. Educating her clients on the importance of pre-planning and protecting assets in the event of a lifealtering occurrence, gives them an invaluable peace of mind. TCW: How is the practice adjusting to the Corona Virus? While many aspects of life have been put on hold as a result of the Coronavirus, elder law issues often cannot wait. Our clients’ need for long-term care advice has become more pressing as families are struggling to find a plan for loved ones. We have been able to provide uninterrupted service by developing creative ways to “meet” with our clients. We have utilized telephone calls and videoconferences in lieu of in-person meetings, and are even able to use technology or “window meetings” to sign critical planning documents. TCW: What are some new trends in this area of the law and what do you think needs to be improved upon? Unlike many areas of law, Elder Law is constantly evolving. There has been a shift in recent years from planning for death taxes to planning for long-term care financing. It is often overlooked that Elder Law can be about much more than the “law.” Elder Law includes preservation of assets, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, disability, capacity issues, and estate administration. However, it can also include non-legal issues regarding care coordination, financial well-being,

housing, autonomy, and quality of life. Elder Law often means doing whatever it takes to make sure an individual is well cared for and supported. TCW: Which part of the law do you find the most intriguing and why? Our practice area offers something new and challenging every day. This is particularly the case in the area of Medicaid law. I love thinking outside of the box to come up with creative solutions for our clients’ most complex challenges. TCW: What are some of the most important tasks family members can take care of while their elder family members are still alive? It is extremely important to consult with an attorney who is experienced in Elder Law before a problem arises in order to develop a plan for the future. He/she will likely recommend basic estate planning documents, but will also be able to recommend an individualized longterm care plan based upon many factors such as the client’s age, health, marital status and assets. TCW: What is the number one mistake most people make when planning for the future? A common misconception is that there is a one-size-fits-all plan for estate and long-term care planning. An effective long-term care plan depends on a multitude of factors and must take into account care costs, public benefits, taxes, family dynamic and so much more. TCW: What drew you to practice this area of the law? I happened upon Elder Law when my own family experienced a need for long-term care and special needs planning advice. I quickly realized that guidance in this area will be necessary by just about everyone at some point in their lives.

Lilliana fell in love with the Pinelands of Atlantic County, purchasing a cabin on the Mullica in 2008. Hurricanes Irene & Sandy, and over six years to recover, proved her devotion. Born in the southwest, where her mother from NY City and father from Costa Rica met in college, and later growing up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, she has fond memories of the Jersey shores. She missed the coast when they moved to Oklahoma City as a teen. Curiosity about humanity inspired her BA studies in Anthropology & Art at Macalester College, and Cross-Cultural Communication, MA, at OU. She’s worked in DC, Chicago and Philly in curriculum, professional development, non-profit director, and sales & business development in TV, technology and education. Commit to Your Health

E

verything is very important, until we are sick. Too often, it is then that we realize our health is the most important thing—but for some it is too late. That’s why, today, take the time to plan smart, healthy choices for your best mental, physical, and spiritual health and overall wellbeing. Your commitment to your health means understanding that it’s a journey that begins with a single step, each day. It means understanding that a lasting commitment is more than a week or a month or any secret, magical number of days. It’s actually even more than a year. It’s plural. It’s years....it’s for life, a lifestyle.!

Dr. Nina’s 7 Touchstones of Good Health: The combination of the following will yield healthy results, and I will discuss each in a separate article in my next several articles:

1. Follow a solid nutrition plan, including hydration 2. Maintain exercise and mental activities 3. Get quality rest and sleep 4. Manage stress 5. Have healthy core relationships (including with medical health professionals you trust) 6. Avoid, stop, steer clear of risk behaviors and quick fixes 7. Establish and maintain healthy disciplines and boundaries A Step at a Time - Making Good Choices to Develop Good Habits: What is key is to develop good,

healthy habits over time. And where need be, to tweak your habits by making small changes every few days, weeks, or even months to create the healthiest disciplines possible. And as you know, thinking/saying “I want” fails to acknowledge the lifestyle change often needed in the process. Researching, drawing a roadmap or creating a plan how to achieve the best in each of the 7 Touchstones of Good Health is a key component to your success. Your lifestyle commitment (and any changes) will be lived out with your knowledge and wisdom in each of the touchstones. So, after making your commitment to being the healthiest, best you possible, you will then need to understand just what constitutes the facts to making good choices to your healthy lifestyle.

each area of the 7 Touchstones is important. There are countless wives’ tales and myths in the atmosphere. You’d be surprised how medical science has moved on from yesterday’s advice. By taking the time to properly educate yourself on each, you’ll be much better able to choose efforts (and develop habits) that is right for your health. • Also, be specific. Look again at what the “7 Touchstones of

Good Health.” Saying, “I want to be healthy” is vague and difficult to achieve. Or another example is “I want to get quality sleep.” Instead, define precisely what you need for that Sleep Touchstone (quieter environment? New pillow? More quiet time in advance to set the mood? More uninterrupted sleep?) Or, does being healthier mean managing stress with clearer boundaries for healthier relationships? Moderating alcohol consumption? More mental or physical activity? And if losing weight is your goal, define how much you want to lose in what period of time. Read and educate yourself as you grow in your knowledge about each of the areas. This will help you to make wise decisions.

• Write it down and speak it out, regularly. Thinking about or wishing for something is very different than speaking it out and writing it down. When you write it or say it, this helps to bring it to life. It helps to make it real and less likely to be forgotten. (Yes, there is good wisdom in seeing it and hearing yourself say it!) And, too, when you do so on a regular basis, you become more likely to achieve your aim. • Build trusted support. Invite your trusted tribe to achieve better

health goals with you. (And to make the commitment.)

• Living in the Moment. Mindful living is your commitment to the daily practice of being mindful of your decisions, choices and actions-as well as being mindful of your heart meditations. Well-being comes as much from how you approach experiences—how you choose to see and work with (frame) them—as it does from what’s going on around you and what actions you take.

Learning how to live healthy in each of the 7 Touchstones of Good Health® can take some time, but it can be a very rewarding experience (and as you grow in your understandings, it gets easier). It starts with your commitment. Stay tuned!

The Formula: Your Commitment + Healthy 7 Touchstones of Good Health + Making Healthy Choices with Understandings through (Intelligent, Science-Based, Proven) Medical Health Education, Knowledge, Wisdom | Mindful = Healthy Results • Educating yourself (or in some cases re-educating yourself ), in

The Sense Of A Woman By Gwendolyn Meusburger BSN, MBA JD

The science of a woman is that of two “X” chromosomes genetically enabling her to become pregnant and give birth to a child for a defined period in her life, usually from puberty to menopause. She is equipped for many things, but most specifically, the miracle of birth. The science of a woman usually places her at a less muscular mass and perhaps shorter than her male human beings. Through time, women were identified as the weaker sex, to be protected and, in many cases, controlled. The talent best attributed to her was that of homemaker; that talent was the role assignment not from women, but for women. Women’s rights in many things and places— equality, religious doctrines, opportunities and social standing—were extremely limited if they existed at all. Women had rules they didn’t know came with their “X”s! The art of women saw the dissipation of the ‘rules for women’ over more time. During the 20th century, the rules were lessened in and among the various societies and cultures. Among the artistry of the female species are grace, finesse, and diplomacy, a lovely ode to Venus. The woman possesses the art of carrying the weight of a child, a family, a company, a nation. The science and art of a woman together deliver to the world the sense of a woman, her essence, her innate definitive power, and her ability to wield them in bold vigor and pride. It is to be acknowledged that all human beings have unique and special characteristics; some things are uniquely male, who are genetically engineered through their “XY” chromosomes. Today, there are a myriad of circumstances that intermingle some of the traits between “XX” and “XY,” but not for this writing. The woman experiences her world from both the science and the art of who she is and/ or who she becomes. In the scientific realm, she is subject to the hormonal influences of her femaleness—sometimes sending her into a frenzy of misunderstood or even unidentifiable emotions. She may be subject to unwanted male

encounters, blame, disenchantment, and ridicule if she complains. The high rate of PTSD among women can many times be attributed to sexual violence, often kept quiet to avoid the barrage of skepticism and questionable behaviors ascribed to her—the victim. She may be a prisoner inside herself, gently breaking apart, but violently suffering personal turmoil. Hence, her greatest and most formidable opponent is depression. According to the Women’s Health publication of May 14, 2019, “more than 1 in 5 women in the United States experienced a mental condition in the past year such as depression and anxiety.” Notably, “depression and bipolar disorder affect more women than men or affect women in different ways from men,” according to the same publication. Sometimes a woman’s mental health symptoms are caused by hormone changes such as perinatal depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and perimenopause-related depression. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), there are some mental health disorders that occur at about equal rates in women and men, but the experiences of those illnesses seem to differ between the two genders. Research has shown that the science of women is inherent to biological factors that have a big influence on their mental well-being. One such example is that studies show women have lower serotonin levels than men, and metabolize it at a slower rate. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter whose function is very complex. It modulates mood, cognition, memory, reward and numerous bodily physiological processes. Given its formidable role and its effect when in limited supply in the body, is it any wonder how it can wreak havoc in a woman’s world?

Women have statistically greater occurrence rates of several major neuropsychiatric disorders for sure. However, perhaps one of the underlying drivers of this, beyond serotonin levels and other measurable biological markers, is their much greater capacity to allow emotion to be not just felt, but engaged and expressed. It has nothing to do with stereotyping because it is an innate willingness to express feelings instead of ignoring or repressing them, as most men are prone and, to some extent, trained in their youth to do. The methods of expression may and do vary widely among women because they are individually comprised of many competing forces and complex sociological expectations. A woman is more likely to relate a story of a moment in time, a personal experience, reveal an emotion that requires expression in some form or another despite the possibility of being judged or, worse, neglected. Because they are more apt to be open, it allows, and in some cases compels, women to be freer and oftentimes more available and more genuine than their male counterparts—a double-edged sword perhaps. However, it is more likely that the benefits of this characteristic in many women outweigh the risks. It is yet another aspect of the sense and strength of women. The shift from sociocultural influences of the days of old that historically subordinated women as caregivers, homemakers for children, husbands and the elderly has given way to the woman in the workforce. She still juggles her job and/or business, the pets, the children, and sexualization at the workplace. A woman may experience self-doubt about her choices, her priorities, and her ability to care for her own needs, much less those of others. Such emotion and personalization invade the psyche, placing her at great risk for despair. Enter the art of who she is—aware of her circumstances, but ofttimes choosing diplomacy

Psychiatry and tolerance to balance the misogyny; not for her, but for those she loves. On the other hand, there are those women who know the art of diplomatic war. And if all else fails, they stand on the shoulders of those who have paved the way in breaking down barriers and shattering paradigms—doing what they have to do, even in the absence of diplomacy. Today, women are very present on the business front. According to SmallBizGenius in an article by Andrea Stojanović on August 9, 2019, “The number of women-owned businesses in the United States increased 31 years out of 46 between 1972 and 2018, growing from 402,000 to 12.3 million.” Women are fueling the socio-economic engine, they are CEOs of themselves, they are innovators, critical thinkers, scientists, politicians, mothers, some single mothers by choice in more and more cases—yet SHE is gracious in HER womanness—this is the Sense of the Woman.

37

Ideas to diminish stress and nurture the female self: 1. Recognize your strengths as a woman 2. Value your innate instincts and talents 3. Balance your self within your modicum of capacity 4. Balance your body with a healthy diet 5. Reduce the toxins in your life, people and foods 6. Meditate 7. Yoga 8. Talk therapy 9. Medications (if needed to assist in serotonin insufficiency, anxiety, and PTSD, et al.—they can be decreased gradually over time as you replace the unhealthy aspects of daily life and symptoms subside) 10. Don’t get caught up in the “tyranny of the or.” You do not have to choose one thing OR another—just balance what you choose according to your selfneeds 11. Don’t be afraid to ask for help—you are woman, but still human!

Peggy is a verbal 3 year old female that will give you her instant opinion about the amenities you have supplied.

The incredible bond between people and their pets and the many benefits that pets bring to our lives is a celebration of how positively animals can influence our lives.

Pets not only provide their owners with companionship, but also with several health benefits. They may help lower blood pressure, heart rate and cholesterol levels and ease tension, anxiety and depression. When people come in contact with animals they tend to experience a general feeling of peace and wellbeing and are perceived as being more happy and healthy. Pet ownership increases the opportunity for exercise and socialization with other pet owners. The therapeutic value of animals for individuals in hospitals and nursing homes has also been documented. Children learn to be more nurturing and compassionate adults by being raised among animals. Taking guardianship of an animal that has been abandoned is a wonderful and fulfilling experience rewarded by unconditional love and companionship. Animal shelters and rescue groups appreciate the public’s support, as do the many pets that are fortunate to find forever homes.

Former New Jersey Senator William Gormley and his family along with Atlantic City Attorney Lee Levine and his family presented a generous donation of $10,000 to Jewish Family Service of Atlantic & Cape May Counties. In addition to the generous financial contribution, the Gormley and Levine families gathered their kids and grandkids to give their time to deliver bags of food to community members in need. Each week, approximately 30 families are delivered essential food through a contactless drop-off. With a 79% increase in Food Pantry requests, the contribution will be used to purchase non-perishable food and other essential products to support individuals and families in need throughout Atlantic County. Top pantry items include cereal, hearty soups, peanut butter, tuna and pasta. “For more than 30 years, Senator Gormley proudly served the residents of New Jersey and while he may be retired from the government, his commitment to helping his constituents of our state continues to this day,” said Andrea Steinberg, JFS Chief Executive Officer. “At JFS, we are thankful to the Gormley and Levine families for their dedication to help those in need, especially during this unprecedented time.” Since mid-March, JFS’ Food Pantry has experienced a substantial increase in usage. With more than 27,000 employees from the Atlantic City hotel/casino industry alone unemployed or underemployed, and many commercial and private businesses that ceased or reduced operation, the need for JFS’ Pantry has increased drastically. On average, the agency pantry served 200 people monthly and currently, we are helping in excess of 225 individuals and families per week. “We are doing this in the spirit of Sam Greenberg whose life was about uniting the people on Absecon island,” said Bill Gormley. For those looking to follow their lead, non-perishable food and other essential products for the JFS Food Pantry are also being accepted at the Galloway Police Department and Pleasantville Police Department as well as Linwood City Hall and Ventnor City Hall.
