Dr. Newkirk Introduces...The Cat House!

The Area’s Only Cats’ Exclusive Veterinary Center

Dr. Mark Newkirk of Newkirk Family Veterinarians of Egg Harbor Twp invites all cat owners and cat lovers to come experience the most unique Cat Care Center the area has to offer. Unlike some hospitals that may have a separate entrance or exam room, The Cat House is a completely separate facility designed to minimize stress on both your cat...and you...during the veterinary visit.

Start with a beautiful country setting on English Creek Ave in Egg Harbor Twp. Enter through a completely different side of the building, and walk into a reception area with running fountains, oriental rugs, live plants, soft lighting and music. It has been one of Dr. Newkirk’s goals to create as stress free an environment as possible for our furry feline friends. Doc understands that cats are not “just small dogs”; that is, they don’t like noise, they don’t want a cold doggy nose pressed up against the carrier door, and they don’t want to have to sit on a stainless steel exam table. At The Cat House, our comfortable exam rooms come with oriental rugs, large chairs for the doctor to sit with you and your cat, and warm decor. Your cat is encouraged to leave the carrier and explore! And not a medicine cabinet in sight! If your pet needs hospitalization, our cat ward is also completely separate, allowing for quiet, calm healing. Fully equipped with incubators, intensive care units, heart monitors, etc, your cat will receive all the special care he or she needs to recover. And no barking dogs to upset them. Dr. Newkirk also does holistic and alternative medicine for pets. Chronic diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis (yes, cats do get arthritis), and allergy are some areas in which blending the best of traditional medicine with the best of alternative therapies often creates better treatment results. For example: Do you have a cat that doesn’t jump up on the bed anymore or without trouble? Or a cat that growls when

you touch or pet him or her over the lower back? This is often a sign of spinal arthritis and/or pain. Fortunately, this condition responds well to chiropractic care and pain medication. Many cats do so well after a few treatments that owners remark, “He’s like a young cat again!”

The ONLY Vet On Air In South Jersey.

1. A cat in Ontario, Canada, named Jake holds the Guinness World Record for the most toes. This ginger tabby has 28! (seven on each paw) 2. A brown Burmese cat from England named Tarawood had what is believed to be the most kittens in a single litter. She gave birth to 19! 3. A tabby cat from Texas named Dusty holds the Guinness World Record for being the most prolific cat. Dusty delivered 420 kittens in her lifetime! 4. Cats generally give birth to 4 to 6 kittens at a time. And an average cat can produce 3 litters a year. Theoretically, this cat and her offspring could give birth to more than 400,000 cats over 7 years! Thus the very great need for spaying or neutering your cat at the proper age. A couple of excellent web sites for correct information about cats are www.felinevideos.vet.cornell.edu and www.catwellness. org. To see how old your cat is in “people years” and learn more about pet aging and wellness, visit www.npwm.com. Finally, if you must leave your feline for vacation or business, please visit us at the Kitty Kondos inside The Cat House. Instead of a cold steel cage, next to barking dogs, your kitty has a multilevel Kondo, with a separate area for the litter pan. (No sleeping or eating in a cramped kennel right next to the litter pan.) If your cat is sociable, daily play time is allowed. We have many toys and climbing areas for exercise. If your cat needs medication, our dedicated staff is more than happy to administer those in your absence. Certain vaccinations are needed for admission to the Kitty Kondos to protect your pet and others from contagious diseases. Tours are available by appointment. See us on the web at www.NewkirkFamilyVeterinarians.com.

Your Pets Are Their Passion For over 37 years, Newkirk Family Veterinarians, a family owned and operated office, has proudly provided quality veterinary care to the South Jersey area. Known as the most unique veterinarian hospital in the area, Newkirk Family Veterinarians focuses on helping pets live healthier, happier and longer lives. Dr. Mark Newkirk, Owner

Dr. Newkirk, owner of Newkirk Family Veterinarians, found his love for animals at the age of 14, working as a kennel assistant every summer at the Margate Animal Clinic. As he returned to work every summer, he got more and more convinced that this was the profession for himself. Graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School, Dr. Newkirk has been serving Southern Jersey for over 35 years and is extensively trained in medicine and surgery and also is skilled in the care of exotic pets such as reptiles and birds. Today, Dr. Newkirk, lecturer, seminar leader, and author, combines traditional medicine and surgery with Holistic Alternatives to access the best of both worlds to help your pet’s overall health. Treating animals from dogs and cats to birds, rabbits, and reptiles, Dr. Newkirk utilizes herbs, homeopathy, chiropractic acupuncture, and other treatment modalities to ensure your pet lives a happy, healthy life.

Dr. Michael Bush

Dr. Michael Bush grew up in Michigan and graduated from Michigan State Veterinary School in 1972. He moved to New Jersey in 1973. He owned and operated Linwood Animal Hospital and retired June 2006. He started working part time for Dr. Newkirk in the spring of 2008.

Dr. Moscony

Dr. Moscony is a lifelong resident of South Jersey and an avid surfer, musician, and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s class of 2012. After finishing his veterinary studies, he traveled to Southern California to participate in an advanced training program which focused on emergency medicine and surgery in Hawaii. In spring of 2017, he moved back to his home port, the island of Brigantine, New Jersey, where he resides on his sailboat Mallard. It is a pleasure to be close to home, working with Dr. Newkirk and his friendly, welltrained team of veterinary technicians, assistants, and receptionists, treating a wide variety of species, from dogs and cats to hedgehogs, opossums, parrots, guinea pigs, skunks, and hairless chinchillas. In addition to his work with Newkirk Family Veterinarians, he also spends time each week working as a spay and neuter surgeon and shelter animal veterinarian with the Atlantic County Animal Shelter. He was inspired to become a veterinarian by his most gentle and kind friend Howler, a Siberian Husky that was with him for nearly 16 years, as well as his bossy and mischievous polar opposite life mate LaFawnduh, a 12-yearold Siberian Husky hybrid.

Dr. Marc Weissman

Dr. Marc Weissman joined the Newkirk Family Veterinarian family in October of 2013. He studied abroad in Bologna, Italy, and continued his education at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and at the University of Missouri. He has been an Associate Veterinarian in Freehold, New Jersey, as well as owner and medical director of Princeton Veterinary Group in Kingston, New Jersey. His areas of special interest include allergy and dermatology, soft tissue surgery, dentistry, and orthopedics. He currently resides in Jackson, New Jersey with his wife. Together they have two sons and currently have several four-legged children, including two cats and two dogs. When he is not busy providing care to animals of all sizes, he enjoys wine tasting, traveling, rock climbing, and yoga.

Celebrating the start of our 12th year!

It’s Summertime! What a wonderful thing to say after experiencing what felt like a forever Winter. Each year, I look forward to the carefree season when the sun is brighter and the days are longer. Whether it is picking apart crabs with a few friends or relaxing down the Shore with my family, Summertime is the perfect setting for everything fun! One of my favorite Summer activities is spending time with my Chocolate Lab, Bear. On a mild Summer day, we enjoy heading to the dog beach in Margate, taking a stroll to the ice cream shop for a “pup cup,” or just simply lounging on my patio with a cup of iced tea. To me, there is nothing better than a dog’s love for its owner. This year marks the celebration of the 12th year of the Atlantic County Woman Publication. In this issue, you may notice a few design alterations. With Summer rolling in, we wanted to refresh our look, always with the reader in mind. We hope you enjoy some of our new design elements as you explore this issue of the Atlantic County Woman magazine! We also hope your Summer is a series of magical moments shared with your family and friends. Thank you for your continued support of the Atlantic County Woman magazine.

CoolSculpting... Matters CoolSculpting... Experience Experience Matters Accent Aesthetics was the first to bring CoolSculpting to Atlantic County and we have continued to surpass all other practices in quality and expertise. As South Jersey’s leading CoolSculpting practice, we have the experience and expertise you deserve. Many people work out, eat healthy and still struggle with fat that won’t budge. Others are hoping to trim trouble areas to provide motivation to continue weight loss. Imagine saying goodbye to that tummy bulge or those love handles after a single treatment!

What is CoolSculpting?

It is the first and only FDA-cleared treatment to eliminate unwanted fat. Using patented cold technology, CoolSculpting precisely targets and removes fat from stubborn areas without surgery or downtime.

How Does it Work?

A hand piece is placed onto the area of concern. The fat is gently drawn into the hand piece and selectively cooled. CoolSculpting freezes unwanted fat, crystalizing fat cells, which are then naturally eliminated by your body. You will see results in as little as three weeks and the eliminated fat is GONE FOR GOOD!

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Flanks, love handles, abdomen, inner and outer thighs are the most common areas to be treated but we encourage a complimentary customized consult to determine if CoolSculpting is right for you

What Does CoolSculpting Feel Like?

We are a full-service spa as well as a physician’s office so you will relax in a spa-like environment during your treatment. Patients describe a slight discomfort during the first few minutes of the procedure after the hand piece has been applied and the cooling started. Each treatment period lasts one hour and most people nap, read, listen to music or watch a video. You are welcome to bring your iPad, phone, laptop or other form of entertainment.

When Will I See my Results?

You will begin to see results in 3-4 weeks as your body eliminates the crystalized fat cells. Maximum results are seen in 60-90 days.

Are There Any Risks or Side Effects to CoolSculpting?

Accent Aesthetics provides a professional atmosphere where you can be assured of safe and responsible care. As with any procedure there are side effects, but with CoolSculpting they are minimal. Some people can experience mild bruising which resolves in a week. Patients often describe a numbness or decreased sensitivity to the treatment area that lasts 1-2 weeks. Rarely a patient will experience a brief period of burning or tingling about five days after treatment but this can be easily treated and is temporary.

The Latest Noninvasive Fat Destruction and Body Sculpting Technology Jeffrey Gosin, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Board Certified Vascular Surgeon We all have problem areas of fat that seem to persist in spite of a healthy diet and exercise. Perhaps it is a belly that just won’t go away no matter how many situps or crunches you do. For many people it is difficult “love-handles” or a “muffin top.” Maybe it is that last little bit of “baby weight” around the midsection. There is now a noninvasive, safe and effective laser procedure to remove these stubborn pockets of fat. The Aesthetic Laser Center at Shore Vascular & Vein Center is proud to now offer SculpSure®, the latest minimally-invasive procedure for targeted fat destruction and body contouring. With SculpSure®, up to four completely customizable laser applicators are used to deliver a specific type of laser energy to destroy targeted fat cells. The treated fat cells are then permanently eliminated through the body’s natural immune system. SculpSure® is FDA approved to remove up to 24% of unwanted fat with each treatment, without the need for painful surgery. It can be used in many different body types, and in all skin types. The SculpSure® versatile applicator system allows the treatments to be completely individualized to each person’s unique shape and areas of concern. This allows for smooth and natural-appearing body contouring. Each SculpSure® treatment takes just 25 minutes. That’s less than half of the time of other body sculpting procedures. SculpSure® treatment is extremely well tolerated, with people typically describing only mild to moderate discomfort during the procedure. Best of all, there is no down time following the procedure. Individuals can return to all of their usual activities immediately following treatment, with no restrictions. SculpSure® has been featured on “The Doctors” and recently was voted “Beauty Game Changer” in New Beauty Magazine’s Best of 2017 Best of Beauty Awards.

Frequently Asked Questions: Who is a candidate for SculpSure®?

Typically people with “trouble spots” that seem resistant to diet and exercise are the best candidates for SculpSure®. Optimal results are obtained in healthy individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or less.

Is SculpSure® just for women?

No. Both men and women will benefit from SculpSure®.

What does SculpSure® treatment feel like?

People will first feel a cooling sensation. This helps to keep the skin comfortable during treatment. The laser then cycles on and off, raising the temperature of the fat cells, causing the fat destruction. During this phase of treatment people generally describe a deep warmth and/or tingling sensation during the 25-minute treatment. It is generally very well tolerated. Furthermore, the treatment can be customized as it is being performed to provide additional comfort when needed.

Is there bruising or pain following treatment?

There is typically no bruising and only minimal soreness after SculpSure® treatment. Unlike other types of body sculpting technologies that use suction and freezing to destroy fat, SculpSure® uses laser energy. When the treatment is completed, the laser is simply removed from the body and the individual goes about his or her normal activities. There is no painful massage or warming required after the treatment is completed.

How much does SculpSure® cost?

Every treatment plan is customized to each individual’s requirements and goals. Cost will depend upon the number of areas being treated and the size of each of those areas. Our physician will work with you to create a specific treatment plan to obtain the best possible results in the most cost-effective manner. Exact pricing is determined during a free initial consultation. We are also currently offering special pricing as we introduce this incredible new technology to our community.

very interested in science so it was a natural progression for him to pursue a career in medicine. His specialty is the treatment of disorders of the circulatory system – also known as vascular surgery. He grew up in a “surgical” family and his dad was his partner for 17 years until he retired last year. He adds, “When I was a child my Dad would bring me to the hospital to make rounds with him on weekends. I really looked up to him and what he did for a living.” It was his father’s dedication and satisfaction with his own career that had a lasting impression on the younger Gosin. Dr. Gosin: My specialty involves treating vein problems, such as varicose veins and spider veins. I also treat diseases of the arteries such as aneurysms, blockage in the arteries to the brain, called carotid artery stenosis and peripheral artery disease (PAD). As a surgeon, I am able to perform surgery when necessary. However, in many cases I am able to treat these vascular problems using modern, minimally invasive nonsurgical methods.

CW: What is the most challenging?

Dr. Gosin: Every case can provide its own unique challenge. It is important to remember that each patient I treat is an individual. Certain elements of his or her care may be more challenging than a similar condition in another person. It is that variation that makes my job so interesting.

CW: Are varicose veins a genetic problem? Can they be prevented?

Dr. Gosin: Genetics are one of the most important risk factors in the development of varicose veins. Individuals with a family history are more likely to develop the condition themselves, than individuals who do not have that family history. However, genetics are just one of a number of recognized risk factors. Other risk factors include prolonged standing, pregnancy, increasing age and being overweight. It is also interesting to note that some people will develop varicose veins without any of those risk factors. Although there is no way to absolutely prevent the development of varicose veins, certain precautions, like wearing compression stockings, may help to keep the symptoms at bay.

Urinary Concerns? Help Is Here! Women and urination is a complex and broad issue. Women in their lifetime face a host of problems and issues surrounding urination and overactive bladder. To continue this discussion, we must define several terms.

What is the bladder? What is the urethra?

The bladder is a pouch-like structure that stores urine produced as a by-product of metabolism. The urethra is a tube-like structure which allows the bladder to empty. The bladder and urethra are found in the pelvis. These organs are in front of the uterus, by the pubic bone. The urethra holds the bladder closed. When the bladder contracts, the urethra relaxes and magically the bladder empties of urine. When any of these do not work correctly, this leads to incontinence (leaking of urine) and/or voiding dysfunction (too much or too little urination, too frequent urination, urgency of urination).

Can you briefly describe overactive bladder condition?

Overactive bladder is a condition in which the bladder incompletely fills and empties frequently. Specifically, women wind up going to the bathroom and urinating time and time again. I’m pretty sure most of us have seen the “I gotta go” commercials. It can get to a point that when a person goes into a new place, the first thing located is the bathroom. It becomes a routine obsession. Their world begins to revolve around the bathroom and urination. This process progresses and begins to affect everyday life, limiting what and how people do things on a daily basis.

What is urinary incontinence? What causes it?

Urinary incontinence is an underreported and underdiagnosed problem that increases with age. It is estimated that over 50% of menopausal women and about 25% of women in their reproductive years are affected. Urinary incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine. It may come with activities such as running or jumping, laughing and coughing. Also, it may occur with urge to urinate (called urge incontinence). If the bladder is not immediately emptied, the flow will start no matter where a person is or what a person is doing. Out comes the urine. The urge-type incontinence is usually more concerning to people. The inability to predict or to stop this causes a great deal of distress and embarrassment. This may cause a person to start to use adult diapers to avoid wetting clothes in public settings. This is not a new problem. But it is a growing problem as our population ages. There are many causes for incontinence. They can range from neurologic, structural (enlarged uterus, prolapsed uterus), lack of hormones, or poor tissue quality to damage after childbirth. Most commonly, the frequency of episodes increases with each passing year. The volume of urine passed also tends to increase.

What are the risk factors associated with bladder problems?

With advancing age, estrogen levels begin to drop. Estrogen helps maintain the tissue around the urethra and bladder. This keeps the vagina moist, the tissue thick and the muscles working. Lack of estrogen, as in menopause, can lead to loss of muscle strength and increased vaginal dryness; the end effect is increased potential to have a leaky bladder. Just being pregnant can also be one of the causes of bladder issues. Pregnancy and related hormones increases the swelling of blood, stretches the tissue and skin, and causes possible nerve injury. Obesity is also a risk factor for bladder problems. Increased weight causes increasing pressure on the surrounding tissue of the bladder. Additionally, as body weight increases, so does the production of certain male and female hormones. This also can have a negative impact on the bladder, leading to increased bladder problems.

How is urinary incontinence treated?

Urinary frequency, urgency, and incontinence are complex issues. The evaluation is dependent on the patient’s complaint and exam findings. We have patients complete a bladder health questionnaire. To fully evaluate the bladder, urodynamic bladder testing is often used. This provides detailed information on bladder function, filling and emptying. This information assists in making an accurate and correct diagnosis. We can then implement a treatment plan to correct your urinary problem. Bottom line—this can change and improve your quality of life. For those affected, it is life-changing. If you or someone you know has urinary concerns, we at Advanced Care can help in diagnosis and treatment. I strongly encourage a call to our office to arrange an evaluation of your urinary concerns. The addition of urodynamic bladder testing in the comfort and familiarity of the Advanced Care office is a great benefit to all of our current and new patients. We look forward to helping you. I know it will be a potentially life-changing call.

Bringing New Life Into The World With Advanced Care OB/GYN Salvatore A. Carfagno, DO, FACOOG

Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Carfango and his staff at Advanced Care OB/GYN provide quality, compassionate healthcare for all stages of a woman’s life. Their philosophy focuses on a comprehensive wellness approach and manages each woman’s health care with that in mind. Dr. Carfango adds, “We seek to provide our patients comfort and satisfaction by establishing a patient focused, family friendly environment.” Their dedication to excellence in care during pregnancy, labor and delivery means they will keep you surrounded by the best medical team available in the region. During your pregnancy they will closely monitor your progress and ensure the best possible quality of care. He adds, “I have the privilege of providing women with medical care during their pregnancy, delivering babies, performing surgeries like Hysterectomies and Cesarean sections. I take care of women from menarche (start of periods) all the way through menopause.” ACW: How did you become involved in the field of Obstetrics? Dr. Carfagno: As a medical student I was able to experience and learn about all of the different types of medical specialties. I was drawn to OB/GYN because it combined medicine and surgery. Each delivery was different and that was exciting to me. ACW: What is the most rewarding part about your profession? Dr. Carfagno: The most rewarding part about my role is the delivering of new life into the world. It makes me a part of one of life’s most memorable events. ACW: What is the most challenging part? Dr. Carfagno: It can be challenging to balance the demands of taking care of my patients twenty-four hours a day and balancing my own family life. Making time for my wife and children, while being there for my patients can get tricky.

Dr. Carfango was born in Philadelphia and received his medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic medicine. He later completed his OB/GYN residency there as well. Later, he relocated to Atlantic County and married “the girl of his dreams.” He and his wife, Dana, reside in Linwood and have three wonderful children. His children, ages 17, 15 and 12 are all very active in local sports. When Dr. Carfagno is not in the delivery room, he can be found cheering on his children in their respective sports. Advanced Care offers a large selection of prenatal services for pregnant women from routine care for the healthy mother, to the most sophisticated care for the complicated pregnancy. Their providers work together with maternal fetal medicine specialists who can perform a wide range of testing for any need.

ACW: What sets your practice apart from others like it? Dr. Carfagno: Advanced Care OB/ GYN was “conceived” to care for people and make the patient number one. Providing personalized care for all stages of a women’s life is our goal. Unlike larger practices with multiple providers, our patients know who will be taking care of them. It allows the patient to get to know their doctor and the doctor can get to really know their patient.

Financial Management

Do I Want To Be A Trustee? Trusts can be set up inter vivos, while you are alive, or can be established, testamentary, upon death by Will. Administering a trust can be a daunting challenge, especially if you are unfamiliar with the responsibilities and complexities that this might require. When considering a trustee for your trust in your estate plan, it is important to appoint someone with the depth and breadth of experience needed to properly oversee the trust. You may also want to think twice before you accept being someone’s trustee. The following shows you the components of a trust.

One benefit to establishing a trust is that you are planning in advance for the proper management of assets to protect against future unknown circumstances. Establishing a trust is a responsible way for you to care for the financial future of family members upon disability or death.

Other Benefits Include

• Assurance that the distribution of assets to designated beneficiaries are made according to the trust document in an unbiased manner. • Protection of assets in the event of such situations as litigation or a divorce • Availability of assets to beneficiaries for such needs as education expenses, living expenses and health care. • Potential for substantial tax benefits. As Trustee you will... • Ensure investments are properly managed. Establishing an Investment

You may have heard of the terms “revocable trust” and “irrevocable trust.” A revocable trust is one that can be changed or rescinded by the grantor. An irrevocable trust generally cannot be changed, altered or amended after it is established.

• • • • • •

Policy Statement from the onset is strongly recommended. Review distrubutions in accordance with the trust document. Approve and arrange for discretionary distributions. Take steps to minimize, as best as possible, income taxes. Coordinate tax preparation, planning and consulting and verify tax return filings. Pay taxes and debts as required in the trust document. Monitor and update the trust document if necessary to conform to changes in the law.

Our focus is where it should be... On You. On Your Family. On Your Future.

Help Protect Your Children’s Feet While Playing Sports Children and Sports

All parents know that children take to sports like ducks to water. Participation in sports develops a sense of self discipline, teamwork, and recognition of the importance of a healthy body -- good habits that last a lifetime. Training Emphasis

Every child physically matures at his or her own rate, and has a different degree of athletic ability. Early training should emphasize proper technique and basic movement skills in all sports. Podiatric physicians, specialists in treating the lower extremities, say children who concentrate on a single sport at too young an age are more likely to develop injuries of the foot and ankle. Save specialization in sports for the late teens.

Footwear

Whether parents like it or not, part of a child’s image revolves around footwear. For good foot health, the condition of the shoes are more important than the price tag or brand name. Podiatric physicians agree it’s often better to buy a child two $50 pairs of shoes than a single $100 pair, so the shoes can be rotated, to avoid rapid wear deterioration. Because a child’s feet are constantly growing, it is Stuart W. Honick, D.P.M., P.T. Podiatric Medicine & Surgery Diplomate American Board of Podiatric Surgery Board Certified In Foot Surgery

important to allow at least one finger’s width from the end of the longest toe when buying shoes.

Growing Bones and Ligaments

The immature bones of children are different from those of adults. The “growth plates” in children’s bones do not finish closing until age 15-17 in boys and 13-15 in girls. When stressed, these plates are more susceptible to injury than the tendons and ligaments that support the joints. Podiatric physicians warn repetitive overuse can cause inflammation of the growth plates. They advise parents to promote diverse physical activities for their children rather than one sport.

Injuries and Treatments

Many children suffer from mild “torsional” imbalances, commonly known as in-toeing and out-toeing. Most children outgrow these imbalances without medical treatment. However, if a child has obvious torsional imbalances, he or she may be more susceptible to injury. If that is the case, keep a close eye out for foot and ankle injuries associated with sports activity. Foot injuries commonly seen in very active children include: Ankle Sprains. In older children, stretched or torn ligaments in the ankle, known as sprains, are more common than fractures. A sprain may cause extensive swelling around the ankle just like a fracture. Immediate treatment is crucial to quick healing. A podiatric physician can provide treatment as well as recommend balancing and strengthening exercises to restore coordination quickly. Fractures. Fractures from overuse in child-athletes are commonly seen in podiatric medical offices. Growth plates are particularly susceptible to injuries, but mid-shaft fractures of the bone also occur. If a fracture is not severe, rest and immobilization may be the best treatment. More complicated injuries may require casting or surgical correction. If swelling and pain persist, see a podiatric physician. Sever’s Disease. An inflammation of a growth plate, Sever’s Disease is often felt as pain behind the heel caused by inflammation of the apophysis, a growth center where a tendon is attached to the bone. Rest, ice, and heel lifts are usually prescribed. Shin splints and stress fractures. Shin splints are microtears or inflammation of the anterior leg muscles, as our Achilles tendon pulls in the posterior region of the leg. Again, rest is most important in healing these injuries. If pain is persistent, see a podiatrist. Dr. Honick’s warm and capable manner and skilled staff makes a visit with your child a very positive and healing experience. Your family is in very competent care when the need for a podiatrist arises!

It signals our ability to be in the present moment (“now!”). Pilates At Breathe Leah Schwartz, owner/certified barre and pilates instructor

“Start where you are, grow from there, the practice is yours.” My journey started with my love for barre. I connected with the fluidity of the movements and how my body felt. Pilates was natural progression. The more the I practiced, the more I desired to perfect my skills. In 2013 I began my training and certifications in Barre and in 2016 I completed my reformer certification from Balance Body. Throughout my education I have collaborated with mentors of varying practices that have diversified my technique and knowledge, and molded my abilities as an instructor.

reformer) the resistance of springs to lengthen and strengthen your muscles, while moving the body as a whole. Regardless of what class you choose, make sure to let your instructor know you’re a beginner. This way, they’ll be able to keep an eye on you throughout the class and offer modifications or form adjustments that ensure you are moving in proper posture. 2. You’ll feel your muscles burn during class, and you’ll probably be sore the next day. While you may not be crushing high-intensity exercises like squat jumps or lifting heavy dumbbells, the mostly bodyweight routines that Pilates classes offer can be pretty intense. Take the signature Pilates Hundred, for example. A core-focused move that involves less than two inches of constant movement, it will make your abs burn. Dedicating your entire focus to even the smallest movements means that you’ll work the muscles more efficiently and solidify good posture through movement. This means you can be dealing with muscle soreness after your workout. Don’t fret: Being sore the next day doesn’t mean you’re out of shape; it just means you’re challenging your muscles in new ways or working muscles you didn’t know you had. 3. Pilates is the foundation of a well-rounded fitness plan. NEW CLIENT Pilates stretches, strengthens, and aligns your SPECIAL body all at the same time. If you’ve wanted to try Pilates classes but something has been holding you back, now’s your time to sign up for your first one. Pilates offers plenty of benefits to your body, no matter your fitness background. You’ll improve your posture, focus on body alignment, and get one heck of a core workout. Want to know what the hype is all about? Here are three things a Pilates newbie needs to know to enjoy her first class. 1. There are two different kinds of Pilates classes: mat classes and reformer classes. You’ll be tackling a class that’s based on either a mat, which is a tad thicker than your standard yoga mat, to cushion pressure points, or a machine called a reformer, which is a sliding platform complete with stationary foot bar, springs, and pulleys that provide resistance to help tone the body. Both options focus on the concept of control rather than cranking out endless reps or muscle exhaustion. In Pilates, your muscles are working to lift against gravity and (in the case of the

A GUIDE TO HIGHER EDUCATION OPTIONS AFFORDABILITY | ACCESSIBILITY | FLEXIBILITY

If only there was a GPS for career direction that we could give to the students in our lives or even ourselves. There may not be an app for that, but there is a way: community college.

Dr. Barbara Gaba, PhD

President Atlantic Cape Community College

It’s not surprising that I see the incredible benefits of pursuing community college; after all I’m the president of one. But when looking at the compelling reasons, you’ll see why I’m not alone in recognizing the power of this path. Much reporting has been done on the benefits of community college in recent years. U.S. News & World Report cites numerous benefits, including transfer agreements with four-year schools, personalized attention and professional certificates. Let’s talk even more benefits.

We all know that the cost of college is on the rise and that student debt is a true financial concern for many people. With lower tuition rates and fees than four-year institutions, community college makes financial sense. As you can see in the infographic, a year at Atlantic Cape Community College, compared to other colleges and universities, simply costs less. Considerably less. And the payoff is big. Whether it’s to expand knowledge or graduate with an associate’s degree, community college helps students build their skills without taking on more debt. There are other distinct advantages to getting back to school via community college. Advantages that can be realized in just a short time. In fact, just a few college courses could have a positive impact on a career. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, employment rates are higher for those with some college than for those with a high school diploma. In addition to being more likely to have a full-time job, students with some college or an associate’s degree have higher salaries than high school graduates, upwards of $4,000 per year higher in fact. In addition to affordability, community colleges offer ease and accessibility – two advantages that can’t be overstated. With a simple admissions process, the ease of enrolling at community college is a breath of fresh air. Too often, prospective students are deterred by unnecessarily complex admissions requirements. By minimizing excessive barriers to entry, community colleges help students get right to realizing their dreams. And one of the best ways to excel as a student is to remain one.

But for a classroom experience to be truly effective it needs to be tailored to each student. At a community college, students’ needs are placed first, with a focus on allowing the individual to explore and discover their passion and calling. That’s why students are encouraged to select classes based on what they want to learn. Students are not expected to know what they want to be on day one of college. (If they do, that’s great.) By choosing interesting subjects, students are automatically engaged in the process. The student becomes invested, they’re all in. Another signature benefit of a community college is its fl exibility. Aft er all, just because students are enrolled in college it doesn’t mean life’s other demands go on hiatus. Community colleges respect the other aspects of a student’s life. Students can work during the day and take a class at night or vice versa. And at Atlantic Cape, our courses of study are accredited, which means students can obtain their bachelor's degree or beyond at most four year universities. Our college exists to help students from all walks of life. They work, raise families, are active military, care for sick loved ones and have other important demands on their time. Taking the first step on a career path can be daunting, but doing the research and finding the best fit for your future is the best place to start. A community college education can help you recognize that your goals are not only possible – they’re well within reach.

Again, the business grew rapidly and they moved to a 4000-sq.-ft. facility in Pleasantville. Not one to sit still for very long, Bob Sr. keep the business growing slowly and steadily, and now operates out of a 16,000-sq.-ft. facility in Egg Harbor Township, along with a second location in Ocean City. When Bob isn’t working, he enjoys surfing, traveling, and high performance driver education events. “The first year running the business out of our home was one of the best years of my life,” recalls Bob.

Body in Balance is fostering neuroplasticity through repetition and biofeedback with Biodex Gait Trainer 3 with Music Application. The common factor of virtually all neurological conditions is that they affect a person’s gait and balance – and thus, increase the risk of falls. Neuroplasticity represents much of the rationale for rehabilitation methods of neurological involvement such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and traumatic brain injury.

How Music Therapy Impacts Physical Rehabilitation Those affected by debilitating neuropathologies respond favorably to Rhythmic Auditory Cueing (RAC) and musical elements carefully chosen to enhance functional movement. Music is shown to jumpstart the brain’s neuroplasticity, reorganizing neural pathways to help patients regain motor function that had been lost to brain injury or disease. Fitting the music to the patient synchronizes gait for entrainment. Walking can be aligned with rhythmic auditory cueing to improve temporal (velocity), special gait (stride length) and gait symmetry (left/right stride deviations). The qualitative component of what is done musically is quantified and documented by the system’s computer. The pretest, comparison to normative data, and posttest results are presented objectively.

Parkinson’s Disease: According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, Parkinson’s disease affects one million people in the United States and ten million worldwide; about 60,000 new cases are reported annually. The prevalence and incidence increases with advancing age. Classic symptoms include deterioration of locomotor skills and postural instability, making falls almost inevitable.

Stroke:

Stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States – and the condition for which much of the Biodex rehabilitation devices are focused. More than 40% of stroke victims are hemiparetic with upper and lower extremity weakness. Biodex devices address both upper and lower extremity exercise through the use of biofeedback, reinforcing corrective actions and documenting progress.

Improve Balance and Gait:

There is a strong consensus among rehabilitation experts that the most important element in any rehabilitation program is well-focused, repetitive practice. Biodex medical devices provide significant improvements in balance and gait and subsequently reduce falls.

Body In Balance accepts most insurances.

I

For Over 2500 Years, People have used Acupuncture to Achieve Better Health. Why?

f you’ve never tried Acupuncture before, you may have wondered what all the fuss is about. It may seem like just another alternative health craze. But did you know that over 14 million Americans have either tried or used Acupuncture? If it didn’t work, it couldn’t possibly be so popular.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

So How Does It Work?

What should I expect during my first visit?

Acupuncture is very gentle and relaxing to receive, and has an extremely low probability of side effects. It does no harm, it can only help. You may feel a pinch when being needled, but most patients don’t know they are being needled! The needles are finer that a human hair! Over 2500 years old, this time-tested method of healing speaks for itself by alleviating conditions normally addressed by drugs or surgery in Western medicine.

Acupuncture is a holistic medicine which empowers the body to heal Wear comfortable loose clothing. Your arms, hands, legs, and feet need to be accessible. Easing the Stress- and Discomfort of Chronic Conditions With Hypnosis & Coaching Anyone who has a chronic condition – whether it’s fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s, cancer, IBS, diabetes, COPD, rheumatoid arthritis, MS, etc. – generally has a lot to contend with… managing symptoms, keeping medical appointments, staying on top of treatment options, dealing with lifestyle changes, and sometimes just - making it through each day. Friends and family members may become impatient because you “look okay,” but often can’t do what you once did. Perhaps you frequently decline

invitations because you’re tired or uncomfortable. Maybe you’re more irritable and short-tempered. And who wouldn’t feel resentful and upset when their world seems to be changing in significant ways? After all, you didn’t ask for this. Having a long-term health condition is often stressful and can seem to leach the joy out of your life. As stress goes up, pain often increases, and more pain means more isolation and more feeling like a victim. But you can stop that cycle and improve the quality of your life. Being able to adapt is critical. It takes time and effort to accept and learn to cope with a new way of being. But you can positively impact your overall health by taking the best care of yourself possible – and that includes, among other things, learning how to de-stress. Using calming techniques helps strengthen your immune system, boosts your mood, and even helps you become less sensitive to pain. A lot of people benefit by journaling – taking a little time each day to write down thoughts and feelings (the good, the bad, and the ugly!) so they’re not constantly burdened with them. Learning how to place your focus outward, instead of constantly focusing on your problems, is also key. Hypnosis and coaching can ease the stress and

discomfort of chronic health conditions by helping you or an affected loved one to:

• Limit the worry and what-if ’s • Reduce muscle tension and tightness • Interrupt pain patterns • Set and reach realistic goals • Create a more optimistic outlook • Adhere to doctors’ suggestions • Improve self-care • Comfortably handle medical procedures/tests • Live life as fully as possible Hypnosis is not a replacement for licensed medical care, but is often used as an adjunct to help create an overall sense of well-being and encourage clients to follow a healthy lifestyle plan. That’s important because lack of self-care can lead to additional health problems. For example, if you’re lying around the house, not getting in much activity, and eating a lot of junk, you may be setting yourself up for more problems than you already have. Having a chronic condition can be life-changing, but it doesn’t have to be life-destroying. You are capable of appreciating all the good that is in your life, and continuing to learn and grow in ways you might not have imagined.

Antidepressants – What Are Antidepressants?

to SAMSHA. It was highest among females at 19.4% Antidepressants are available as tricyclics, MAO inhibitors, selective as compared to males of serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). Their action is in the brain, specifically acting 6.4%. Also in 2016, 37% of patients received no on neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are the carriers of information treatment as compared from one neuron receptor to another. Serotonin helps regulate sleep, mood, and appetite and helps “regulate pain.” When levels are low, suicidal to 44% who had both medication and a health risks increase. Dopamine aids movement, and how a person perceives reality. Low levels of dopamine may be associated with psychosis, distorted care professional; those who took medication only were thinking, and delusions. Norepinephrine causes constriction in the blood 6%. Among adolescents, vessels, causing an increase in blood pressure. It may cause anxiety and approximately 60% received is thought to be associated with some forms of depression. Therefore serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine are examples of neurotransmitters no treatment. that are often the culprits of certain conditions of the mind because of Suicide and Depression some type of interference with their actions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported

What Are Antidepressants Used For?

The science of depression is thought to relate to a disruption of how the “messengers” of the brain, or neurotransmitters, “behave” as previously described. Since neurotransmitters carry messages from one neuron to another, the communication between and among cells in the brain through neurotransmitters is essential to all brain function. Because of a disruption of the “messengers,” a specific disease or condition can manifest. The purpose of antidepressants is to reset the function of the neurotransmitters. Typically, neurotransmitters go through a “reuptake” process that makes them less available to carry out their function. The “reuptake inhibitor” functionality of antidepressants is the chemical opponent of the reuptake process that slows it down. Subsequently, the neurotransmitters are moving as they should, and the depression symptoms experienced by an individual are lessened, if not eliminated.

What Are the Symptoms of Depression?

Symptoms of depression are varied among individuals, but have common descriptions from those who suffer from it. The most common symptoms are described as a feeling of helplessness, loneliness, hopelessness, lack of self-worth, being in a “dark place,” loss of appetite, insomnia, physical symptoms (somatic depression), poor outlook on the future, and even thoughts of suicide. Depression is a serious matter for the individuals and families experiencing it. And as wonderful as the human body is in attempting to “heal” itself, it can be overwhelmed by many things; in this case a chemical disturbance in the brain that requires assistance in getting reequilibrated.

Prevalence of Depression

According to the National Institutes of Health in 2016, an estimated 16.2 million adults in the United States had at least one major depressive episode, which is 6.7% of all U.S. adults. It was highest among adult females at 8.5% compared to males at 4.5% and highest among adults between the ages of 18-25 (10.9%). Among adolescents with major depression, an estimated 3.1 million aged 12-17 experienced it, according

that the rate of suicide rose to the highest rate it had been in 25 years in 2013 and has gone up each year after that. Annually, there are more than 13 deaths per 100,000 in the United States population. Depression and suicide is believed to be linked; it is estimated that 60% of people who suicide have major depression. However, not everyone with depression will attempt suicide. Among 10- to 34-year-olds, suicide is the second leading cause of death. Between ages 35 to 54, suicide is the fourth leading cause of death (CDC, 2016).

Why Take Antidepressants?

Stress is a matter of life in many situations. Sometimes, its onset is related to extremely traumatic events like childhood abuse, the loss of a loved one, an illness, loss of a relationship or job, domestic violence and other fulminant life events. Other conditions that may have antidepressants prescribed include: neuropathy, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bulimia, and fibromyalgia. When depression occurs for these or other reasons, it is paramount to get relief from its grip. Antidepressants may be the option of choice. When taking an antidepressant is a choice, it must be one of informed consent, as in any medical or alternative choice.

The Cost of Care for Depression Disorders

According to the American Psychological Association, the most costly of mental health and substance abuse disorders is depressive disorders at $71 billion; it is the sixth most costly of health conditions. Overall, the cost of mental health and substance abuse is $187.8 billion of the $2.4 trillion spent in health care treatment in the United States. It ranks number 4 behind cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and endocrine and other disorders. The cost of mental health and substance abuse treatment increased 3.7% between 1996 and 2013; that is more than 1.2% more than cardiovascular disorders. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry in 2015 placed the cost of depression and other comorbid disorders at $210 billion in 2010. The article stated the best way to manage the cost of depression was “to manage the depression itself.”

Two Sides Of A Sword Side Effects of Antidepressants

The primary complaint associated with taking antidepressants is weight gain. Some pharmaceutical progress has been made over the years with antidepressants that have minimal or no effect on weight, but overall, that is still the main reason for non-compliance in those prescribed antidepressants. Other side effects include, for example, constipation, nausea, diarrhea, agitation and sexual disruption.

Making Effective Use of Antidepressants

• Take them under the direction of your doctor. • Give them time to become effective; remember, they are not magic, they are medicine. • If one medication does not work, another may. Here is where gene testing for protein metabolism is making an impact. Starting with the most appropriate antidepressant for your genetic makeup in the first place is obviously desirable. • Be aware of your feelings once you have stopped taking the antidepressant, because your symptoms could reoccur. • Introduce other forms of stress relievers like exercise, meditation, yoga, getting involved in art and/or music. These activities may assist you as you work with your doctor to decrease the amount of antidepressants taken, but requires attention and caution to avoid untoward side affects. • Trauma and other life situations may require antidepressant therapy to get through the crisis. It is often correlated with talking therapy for the greatest effectiveness.

Discontinuing Antidepressants

Correlating Alternative Methods of Depression Management

Once the symptoms of depression are managed, it could be helpful to add other forms of treatment, such as stress relaxation techniques to reduce anxiety; meditation can have a moderate affect on depression and anxiety, as with yoga; and in some cases, acupuncture can help manipulate the flow of energy, according to Chinese practice. The key is to balance the chemical nuances of depression with effective treatment modalities for the individual person.

Genetics as a Factor in Health

Genes affect every part of our body. They make the proteins that are involved in all the body’s biological processes. They also have the mysterious characteristic of turning on and off throughout our life. Sometimes there are genetic disruptions in protein production that can alter our biology and create instability such as mood and other mental health behaviors. To that end, there is no one-size-fits-all because of the unique genetic makeup of every person. As such, to take or not take antidepressants is a matter of information and choice, taking into consideration arguments for and against varying treatment modalities. Science is now looking at how individual protein metabolism impacts a person’s response to medications across the health-care realm of diseases and conditions. This is exciting and will shed new light on individualizing medication therapy. In the meantime, science is rich with research and theories, but the one factor in what works for any individual is completely individualized, but requires well trained medical professional care.

Don’t suffer alone…the people harmed, their close friends and family members who are always negatively affected, there is help and being alone, in pain, no more is achievable.

Taking an antidepressant does not have to be perceived as a life sentence. The primary objective in taking antidepressants is to relieve the symptoms Call 609.484.0770 or visit www.SouthJerseyPsychiatry.com. of depression and prevent self-harm or harm to others. If an individual is no longer experiencing symptoms, it may be thought that it is favorable to continue them indefinitely and it may be prescribed over the long term. However, everything is about choice. If, in fact, an individual feels they want to stop taking antidepressants, it is strongly recommended a plan is developed with their doctor. The reason is because sudden cessation can cause “withdrawal” symptoms. Examples of this, though not all-inclusive, include brain “zaps,” dizziness, abnormal sensations, and recurrence of depression. Close monitoring while weaning from antidepressants can ameliorate or even prevent the potential for disturbing symptoms. Some antidepressants have a somewhat “Here to Listen & Here to Help” Charles Meusburger, MD greater propensity for withdrawal-like symptoms. Sun Damage : The Dangers of Tanning – Indoors or Outdoors Have you ever been mistaken for Casper the Friendly Ghost? You may still value a glowing tan, even if you’re not quite that white. Many people think and feel a little color gives them a healthier – maybe even sexier – look.

So isn’t it ironic that your glorious tan can actually put you at risk?

When exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation – whether from the sun or a tanning device – your skin reacts by producing more melanin. Melanin is the pigment that darkens your skin. Tanning can cause premature wrinkling, skin spots, and a “lovely” leathery look down the road. In addition, it can also suppress your body’s immune system and cause eye damage or allergic reactions.1 Some people can develop skin cancer from too much UV radiation. Were you one of those kids who shunned skin protection or overstayed your time in the sun? If so, you probably had a severe sunburn or two, putting you at greater risk for the deadliest form of skin cancer: melanoma.1 What’s worse is the sun isn’t the only culprit! Tanning devices like sunlamps used in tanning beds are more dangerous than previously thought. A few years ago, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) looked at 19 studies conducted over 25 years. It found a link between indoor tanning and two kinds of skin cancer, as well as melanoma of the eye. The risk of skin melanoma increased by 75 percent when indoor tanning started before age 35. As a result, the agency moved these devices into the highest cancer risk category: “carcinogenic to humans.”1 It is time to take stock of that warning, especially if you have pale skin; blond, red or light-brown hair; or you or a family member has had skin cancer.2 Melanoma is the second most common cancer in women in their 20’s. One in eight with melanoma die from the disease.1 Besides avoiding tanning salons, what can you do? Take precautions, whether you’re sunbathing at the poolside or cutting through the snow on the ski slopes. If you can, limit your time in the sun when rays are strongest – between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wear widebrimmed hats, long sleeves, and long pants, when possible. Use a water-resistant sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Make sure it is rated as broad spectrum, which protects against all types of skin damage. Be sure to apply sunscreen to areas of uncovered skin about 15 minutes before you go outside. Always pay special attention to your nose, ears, neck, lips, and hands and reapply every two hours. If you have a child younger than six months, talk with their doctor or Health Mart before you apply sunscreen. It is important to check your medications and cosmetics with us because they can make you more sensitive to UV rays.1,2

What else? Buy sunglasses with 99 to 100 percent UV protection – especially for your children.2 If you’re not sure whether your shades already offer this protection, check with your eye care professional. Remember, you can find many of these sun protection products right here in our store. Together we can help your family stay protected from melanoma. Sources 1. Interior Design

Reorganize Your Space - Reorganize Your Life! Written by: Ava Cocchi

I am so excited to share with you my favorite new business that goes hand in hand with my interior designing. Reorganize with Rachael is a new business specifically for people who have hoarded long enough and are in desperate need of help when it comes to organizing their homes. As a designer it’s very hard to see past the large amount of stuff to create a whole new atmosphere, but Reorganize with Rachael creates a clean slate to begin anew! I sat down with Rachael and here are a few things I learned about her company. Playroom Before Playroom After

Playroom Before

Playroom After

Rachael loves what she does because not only is she organizing a client’s home, but she creates an all-together peace inside their home that was missing for them. Organizing has been Rachael’s passion since she was a little girl. She would always move furniture around and find different ways to make everything look neat and easy to access. It’s a big stress and anxiety reliever for her as well. She channels all her thoughts and energy on organizing the client’s space and works with the client to create a space that is fully organized. Rachael has had several transformations that the client couldn’t even believe was their home. Her favorite part of the house to organize are closets. Rachael says, “I love doing closets. My all-time favorites are the rooms that look like they can never be organized. I repurpose and recycle whatever I can and turn it into a serene space.” A few of her favorite transformations are playrooms and master closets because those are the areas the homeowner dreads doing and tend to be the most dramatic transformations. Here are some tips Rachael recommends for readers when trying to declutter a space: tackle one drawer at a time; when you buy something new, always get rid of something old; and if it’s in the attic for a year, you will never wear it again so get rid of it. Her simplest recommendation? The right hangers change a closet!

Reorganize with Rachael is headed by Rachael Kedjian Mesorole, 609-576-7111. Call anytime to get your home reorganized and ready to design!

Take Proper Precautions This Summer

T

here’s nothing like summer time, especially after a long, harsh and bitter winter….and a missingin-action spring. As New Jerseyans flock to the outdoors, barbecuing, swimming, and basking in the sun’s rays to thaw, the summer heat can be dangerous, if proper precautions are not taken. The good news is that there is a lot we can do to balance the fun in the sun while staying safe.

Dr. Nina’s What You Need to Know: To Stay Safe in the Summer Heat How does our body regulate its temperature?

For optimal functioning of the multitude of actions and reactions that our body undergoes, its temperature needs to remain within a narrow range--98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, plus or minus 1 degree. And that is quite a feat when the outdoor temperatures can be frigidly cold or scorching hot. Our skin plays a pivotal role when it comes to keeping us cool. As our body temperature rises, blood flow from the internal organs (e.g., liver, heart, gut) gets diverted to the upper layers of the skin so heat can dissipate into the environment. At the same time, water diffuses through the skin (a.k.a. perspiration, sweating), and heat is removed from the body when it evaporates; similar to a boiling pan of water.

Can I get a refresher course on Physics 101? All things were meant to be equal, according to the laws of

physics. Take for example, a hot cup of coffee. We know that over time, it will cool. This is because the heat dissipates into the environment. However, it will never become cooler than room temperature. Heat is a form of energy and always flows from high temperature to low temperature, a phenomenon known as equilibrium. When the temperatures between our body and the environment are equal, there is no net flow of heat. But when the weather is hot, according to the law of equilibrium, heat will flow into our body.

How do we cool off and stay safe with sky high temperatures?

• Limit strenuous activities to the morning and evening hours, when it is cooler • Mimic fish and drink plenty of fluid. Not only does drinking liquids cool us down, it is necessary to replace what is lost from sweating and perspiration. The key is to drink consistently throughout the day, not just when we feel thirsty. If we are engaging in strenuous activities, set a goal to drink 2-4, eight ounce glasses of fluid EVERY hour. Additionally, we need to be aware that alcoholic, caffeinated, and sugary drinks increase urination and, hence, can cause fluid loss—the opposite of what we are trying to achieve. • Dress for success…and coolness. Lightweight clothing allows our body to dissipate heat instead of insulating it. And the coloring of your threads is also important: light-colored clothing reflects heat whereas darker colors absorb it. • Don’t get burnt. In addition to increasing our risk for skin cancer, sunburn prevents heat dissipation. The red that we see is actually superficial, broken blood vessels that will decrease blood flow to the skin’s surface. • Retreat to air-conditioned areas whenever possible. • Hot Cars: Never leave a child in a car unattended, even for a moment. Temperatures inside a car can increase, putting anyone in danger – especially children. Heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash, vehicle-related deaths for children. When buckling our children in, make sure that the belt buckles are not too hot, especially when the car has been parked in the heat.

Have a fun, relaxing, and safe summer!

What can happen if we cannot cool down?

We can experience heat-related illnesses ranging from rashes to heat cramps, exhaustion, and stroke. • Heat cramps are painful spasms in our legs and abdomen that are accompanied by heavy sweating. • Heat exhaustion describes confusion, dizziness, fainting, headache, and vomiting. This can progress to heat stroke, a medical emergency. • Heat stroke is when our body’s temperature increases to greater than 105 degrees Fahrenheit and can literally fry our brain.

Shoe Repair

Protecting Your Shoes This Summer Summer means a lot of things to people, cookouts, beach vacations and ice cream sandwiches,

what’s not to love? But summer also means heat, sudden downpours and outdoor weddings, all of which can wreak havoc on your shoes and lead to these familiar summertime footwear woes.

40% Off W omen’s Heel Repair

Here at The Friendly Cobbler we don’t just repair and clean your shoes, we do it with a smile and pride in our work. With over 20 years of professional shoe repair experience, we guarantee every repair and cleaning to be our very best!

Here are some tips to try and keep summer shoes/sandals protected this summer. • • •

The most important tip to protecting your shoes is to keep them out of the sun. Shoes sitting in cars and being subjected to the sun will break down the glue used to bind the souls and heels of the shoe. The second tip is to keep leather shoes out of the water. Grab a few sheets of newspaper, ball them up and stick them inside those shoes. The paper will absorb moisture, as well as smells. If your fabric shoes have gotten a little dingy or have a few dirt marks, try dampening a sponge or rag and applying a small amount of a mild detergent like dish soap, liquid laundry detergent or baby shampoo, then give the exterior of the shoe a good going over. Please don’t throw out your shoes, leather purses, or coats just because they are damaged. Remember I can repair heels, soles, stretch and shine shoes, and most straps on leather purses. Bring me your broken heels, faded leather shoes and I will make them as good as new, I promise!

Jennifer Pierce

Marla Marinucci, Esq.

Jennifer Pierce is the co-owner and General Manager of Clay’s Climate Control, a local HVAC business in Linwood, NJ. Jennifer and her husband, Clay, started the business together in 2001 with the simple idea that they could provide exceptional customer service and work quality in an industry that was not always known for that. Jennifer was born and raised in Long Island, NY, and moved to the Jersey Shore in 1990. She is a graduate of Holy Spirit HS and has her BS in Biochemistry from Lafayette College. While enrolled in a master’s program for Forensic Science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in NYC, she pursued a career as a pharmaceutical representative for Wyeth-Ayerst. After the birth of her first son in 2004, Jennifer decided to focus on raising her family and growing Clay’s Climate Control. In the past 17 years, Clay’s Climate Control has grown from just Jen and Clay to 25 successful co-workers. Her family has also grown to three children, two dogs, two cats and various rodents. She and Clay believe strongly in giving back to the community and consistently donate to CASA of Atlantic and Cape May Counties, the Hero Campaign, and many local schools and sports clubs For more information call 609-653-2295 or visit www.claysclimatecontrol.com.

Marla Marinucci is a Family Law attorney with an office in Ocean City, New Jersey. She practices primarily in Cape May and Atlantic Counties. As a family law attorney, Marla solely handles issues involving the family, such as divorce, custody, alimony, and child support just to name a few. She also does appeals relating to family law; prepares prenuptial agreements; and specializes in post judgment modifications and applications for relocation. In addition to having the honor of being certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Matrimonial Law Attorney, Marla was recently accepted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, an extraordinary accomplishment attained by less than one hundred attorneys in this State. According to Marla, one of the biggest misconceptions people have when they are involved in a legal battle is this strong desire to have their “day in court.” “It cannot be stressed enough that the best thing you can do, especially when young children are involved, is to find a way to settle your differences with the other party instead of putting a decision of such magnitude in the hands of a judge.” With every new client, Marla’s first thought is weather or not the case can settle so that court is avoided and the parties walk away with some level of dignity and the damage is minimized. Marla earned both her B.A and law degree at Rutgers University in Camden. In her spare time, she enjoys exercising, cooking healthy and spending time with her two children. Adopt Your New Best Friend Today The incredible bond between people and their pets and the many benefits that pets bring to our lives is a celebration of how positively animals can influence our lives. Pets not only provide their owners with companionship, but also with several health benefits. They may help lower blood pressure, heart rate and cholesterol levels and ease tension, anxiety and depression. When people come in contact with animals they tend to experience a general feeling of peace and wellbeing and are perceived as being more happy and healthy. Pet ownership increases the opportunity for exercise and socialization with other pet owners. The therapeutic value of animals for individuals in hospitals and nursing homes has also been documented. Children learn to be more nurturing and compassionate adults by being raised among animals. Taking guardianship of an animal that has been abandoned is a wonderful and fulfilling experience rewarded by unconditional love and companionship. Animal shelters and rescue groups appreciate the public’s support, as do the many pets that are fortunate to find forever homes. Kathy Kelsey Manager

Red Cross: Be Prepared During Hurricane Season The American Red Cross New Jersey Region wants to help keep you and your loved ones prepared and safe. Here are three simple steps you can take to prepare your household for an emergency: 1. Build an emergency kit with a gallon of water per person,

per day, non-perishable food, a flashlight, battery-powered radio, first aid kit, medications, supplies for an infant if applicable, a multi-purpose tool, personal hygiene items, copies of important papers, cell phone chargers, extra cash, blankets, maps of the area and emergency contact information. See the full list and learn more at redcross.org/kit. 2. Talk with household members and create an evacuation plan. Practicing the plan minimizes confusion and fear during the event. 3. Be informed. Learn about the community’s emergency response plan. Plan routes to local shelters, register family members with special medical needs as required and make plans for pets.

Stay Safe In and Around the Water This Summer This summer, many New Jersey families will be taking to the water to help beat the heat. Every day, about ten people die from unintentional drowning, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is the leading cause of injury deaths for 1-4 year-old children.

The American Red Cross is stressing the importance of constant, active adult supervision and ensuring that everyone learns to swim as critical layers of protection to help prevent drowning. The following tips are layers of protection that will help people stay safe in, on and around the water: • Do your part, be water smart! Ensure that everyone in the family learns to swim well.

• Adults: actively supervise children; stay within arm’s reach

Download Free Red Cross Emergency App For tips on what to do before, during and after severe weather such as hurricanes, download the Red Cross Emergency App. It offers emergency alerts and information about what to do in case of flooding, as well as locations of open Red Cross shelters.

Users can find it in smartphone app stores by searching for the American Red Cross, texting GETEMERGENCY to 90999 for a link to download the app or going to redcross.org/apps.

of young children and newer swimmers. And kids: follow the rules. • Don’t fool with a pool: fence it in. Enclose your pool and spa with four-sided, four-foot fencing and use self-closing, selflatching gates. • Don’t just pack it; wear your U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket – always when on a boat and if in a situation beyond your skill level. Inflatable children’s toys and water wings can be fun, but they are no substitute for a life jacket and adult supervision. • Swim as a pair near a lifeguard’s chair - everyone, including experienced swimmers, should swim with a buddy in areas protected by lifeguards. • Reach or throw, don’t go! Know what to do to help someone in trouble, without endangering yourself; know how and when to call 9-1-1; and know CPR.

Brigantine Art Walk: A Great Success

Over 30 artists were in attendance for the kick-off of the 2018 Brigantine Art Walk. The new location at the City Ball Field was a great success. Artists displayed and sold their work to the enthusiastic crowd that milled through tents and displays. There was something for everyone, including metal crafts, handcrafted jewelry, paintings of various mediums, and photography. Fourteen new artists joined the opening event held on May 26. The locals and visitors flocked to see new artist Tom Smith of Metalcraft73, a metal craftsman, creating awesome, whimsical pieces from metal. Another new artist, Catherine Profitt of Pink Glove Acrylics, had an array of poured art on serving trays, clocks, carved pieces and more. Returning this year to the Art Walk was Brigantine photographer Connie Pyatt, displaying canvas prints of our island and her travels around the country. Photographer Donna Swiatek of Beach Angel Photography impressed patrons with her diverse portfolio. Artists Tania Pomales, Theresa Wolfe, and local Brigantine resident Pamela Carchidi captivated visitors with their fine art paintings. These are just a few of the awesome 32 artists who participated in our first event. Our second event, on July 7, “The Pirate Art Festival,” will be held at the seawall across from Pirates Den. This event will run from 3pm to 8pm. Artists will line the seawall, displaying their work for you to come see while listening to our performers. It will be a wonderful evening on the wall with art & music. Attendees will be able to enjoy an array of art showcasing every medium, including painting, photography, fine jewelry, and more from over 35 artists. Beginning at 3:15 will be Paul, Mike & Dan, an acoustic blend of folk, rock, blues, traditional and original sounds. Starting at 5:30 is our second performer, Danny Kaiser, an acoustic finger guitarist and vocalist who will be playing till 7:30. The third and fourth events we are back at the Brigantine City Ball Field on Brigantine Ave between 24th & 26th Streets. The Brigantine Art Walk, now in its third year, came to fruition due to the hours of planning and gathering artists through social media by Connie Pyatt, a full-time resident and photographer in Brigantine, NJ. The Art Walk has grown over the past few years with new artists joining the group all the time. Connie has a passion for art. She loves promoting artists and their work. The Art Walk happens rain or shine. If the rain is really pouring down and there is lightning, we will cancel the event. A little drizzle and we will still be there. The purpose of the Art Walk is to showcase talented local artists and their work. The Jersey Shore has a diverse palette of talent up and down the coast. We want to bring these talented artists to Brigantine. Staying updated on Brigantine Art Walk happenings and artists is easy. Crossroad for Angels: Helping Survivors Overcome Their Past Eve Cortes, founder of Crossroad for Angels, strives to educate, help and inform survivors of sexual abuse and incest. Her Story When I walked into my new apartment for the first time and saw the surreal view from the window, it took my breath away. I walked out to the deck and looked out towards the ocean and watched the waves flow back and forth. I was drawn to the ocean, the sound of the waves and the seagulls as they glided by. It brought me back. Back to a place I had spent years trying to forget. As a child I had always lived by the ocean; the sounds and smells of the shore always brought me back to the abuse. I knew my brother loved me, but was this love? It started off with small things like an innocent game of playing house. I was the mom and he was the dad. “This is what mommies and daddies do,” he’d say, demonstrating with my Barbies how they should kiss and touch. Eventually the toys went away and our game of house turned into him on top of me, touching me in the living room, not uttering a word. The silence was deafening. I knew this was wrong, but he was loving me. This was love. Someone loved me. One morning I went downstairs and saw my brother in the living room, where that awful green

velvet couch was, that couch. I told him I wanted a new teddy bear. He told me that he probably couldn’t get me one on that particular day. That’s when I made my threat. If he didn’t get me the bear, I would reveal our secret to the world. He promised me he’d try. The next night, after I had fallen asleep, I woke up to screams. It was my mother crying and screaming for her son. The neighbor was over and had seen me come down the steps. She took me to her place and sat me down to tell me that my brother had killed himself. For years I blamed myself, but I have finally come to terms with the fact that this was all out of my control. One day I was watching my daughter, who, at the time, was four years old, and it hit me. I was her age when it started, and seeing how innocent and vulnerable she was helped me realize I was not at fault. I couldn’t have been, because I was once her. A million mistakes later and years of therapy have helped me heal. I still have eons of healing to do, but I am a great work in progress. I love my new apartment now. I embrace the past and have learned I cannot change it. Whenever I look out into the ocean and can see where the sky and water meet, I know there is something greater out there guiding me. What I experienced with my brother was not love, it was abuse. I know that now and the ocean no longer reminds me of the pain. It brings me hope. I have finally realized that the only way to forget was to remember...

Kate Spade: Fashion Icon to Nieman Marcus in 1999, who later sold the brand to Fifth & Pacific, which was formerly known as Liz Claiborne; however, both Kate and Andy remained active with the promotion of the brand. Kate Spade was known to have taken some time off when daughter Frances Beatrix was born and returned in 2006 with a new brand called Frances Valentine. According to The New York Times, in May the full brand and business was sold to Coach. Kate Spade did not stop at fashion. She utilized her writing skills and wrote three books that included Manners, Occasions and Style. Kate Spade was 55 years old and it has been reported that she suffered from severe depression and anxiety. As a mental health professional, when I hear that someone has taken their life as a result of their inability to cope, it has a significant impact on me. Regardless of a person’s socioeconomic status, mental illness, including depression and anxiety, does not discriminate. I would be remiss if I failed to mention that no matter where we live or which career paths we choose, we could all be affected in one way or another by the daily stressors we encounter. It appears evident that the stigma of mental illness continues to create a barrier for society to It is with a heavy heart that I present this feature to all of seek treatment. In 1991 Kate Spade left the magazine industry to launch a business with her husband, Andy. The “Kate Spade” brand was presented to the city of New York by way of handbags in 1993. The first location was in a small boutique store in SoHo. I recall attending a wedding back in the 1990s with a good friend and she was carrying a bag which she referred to as “her Katy.” I had never heard of Kate Spade at the time; however, my friend was gushing over her new investment and her new friend “Katy.” I was educated about this amazing new designer. At the time I could not afford such a beautiful purchase, and it would not be until years later that I would acquire my first “Katy” bag when I received it as a generous gift from my sister. Kate Spade expanded her retail business as the popularity of her handbags grew. The handbags were known to be shaped in all different sizes, came in beautiful, vibrant colors and provided a modern accessory to mesh with the latest fashion trends. Kate Spade was a monument of fashion in New York and around the world, wearing her signature glasses and wearing her hair in a relaxed, pulled-up style that made us all want to have that look. The Kate Spade brand displays such an eclectic style that makes you feel in touch the latest fashion trend regardless of age. In fact in 1996, Kate Spade was awarded with the “America’s New Fashion Talent in Accessories” award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Kate Spade’s designs were sold in high-end stores ranging from Bloomingdale’s to Saks Fifth Avenue to Nieman Marcus! By 2006 Kate Spade’s retail resume included eyewear, shoes and even paper goods in addition to accessories and handbags. It has been reported in the biography of Kate Spade that she and her husband sold their business
