As we approach the 70th anniversary of The Country Schoolβs founding, we are reminded of the vision that began with a few devoted shoreline families who sought to place children at the heart of learning, with imaginative teachers as their guides.
Today, that same mission thrives at 341 Opening Hill Road because of you. Your generosity β your willingness to stretch on behalf of our students and teachers βensures that the academic advantage we offer is stronger than ever.
Through your contributions you have helped us change children's lives forever. For that, we are deeply grateful.
Thank you for your support and belief in the power of this extraordinary education and our gifted teachers who provide it.
With gratitude,
John Fixx Head of School
Christian Vick Director of Development
AnnuAl fund: tHe BAsics
What is the Annual Fund and why is it necessary?
As in most independent schools, tuition and fees by design do not cover the full cost of a studentβs education. The Annual Fund provides vital supplelmental funding to enhance academic and extracurricular programming, retain outstanding faculty, and ensure that a Country School education is accessible to an economically diverse population.
How much should I give?
A gift that is meaningful to your family is meaningful to The Country School. While the amount varies for each family, a gift at any level makes a difference.
Why is 100% participation so important?
A gift of any size is an endorsement of The Country School and has a greater impact than its financial support alone. High parent, faculty, and alumni participation is an important factor that foundations and corporations consider when deciding to invest in The Country School.
Does it matter when I make my gift?
Though the Annual Fund runs from July 1 to June 30 every year, we encourage donors to make a gift or pledge before December 31. Making a gift or pledge early significantly helps The Country School in budget planning.
How is the Annual Fund different from the Campaign and the Spring Auction?
The purpose of The Talent Within Campaign is to raise funds for the construction of our new buildings and for the endowment. The Spring Auction, our largest Annual Fund event, raises additional funds for The Country School programs.
2023-2024 AnnuAl giving
Annual giving for 2023-2024 to The Country School encompasses all monetary gifts received during the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2023, and ending June 30, 2024. Gifts include contributions to the Annual Fund, endowment, scholarships, restricted gifts, Class of 2024 Gift, capital, matching gifts, and fundraising events. We acknowledge and thank all our supporters for their generosity.

Inspired by the same ambition as the generations who built the campus where our community thrives, we embark on a multi-year endeavor to expand the financial health and campus effectiveness of The Country School.
Hands-on learning will happen in our two student Makerspaces. They will bring design thinking to life for students to create interdisciplinary projects. The new Engineering Facility and Maintenance Center will provide a permanent location for our maintenance team for ongoing upkeep and all campus projects.
β’ All campus buildings have been constructed with funds beyond tuition.
β’ Blatchford Learning Center, the most recently constructed building, was erected in 1998.
β’ The last campaign developed the parking lot, the 60th Anniversary Athletics Fields, and the Burt Family Green.
β’ Our goal is to raise over $3,000,000 to create a larger overall endowment.
Multi-yeAr pledges
We also recognize donors who continue to fulfill multi-year pledges as well as those who have joined the Talent Within Campaign during the 2023-2024 academic year.

The overall endowment is a family of funds created over generations by families, staff, students, and friends of The Country School. Together, these funds support all aspects of the school, including programming, staff recruitment, and financial aid.
Gifts from 2010-2024 have helped the Endowment grow over $900,000.

Inspired by the Burt Familyβs generosity to scholarship in the 50th year, the Founders Promise Fund for Scholarship Endowment was created by the Daitch Family during The Country Schoolβs 55th Anniversary to honor the schoolβs Founders.
Gifts to the Founders Promise Fund provide tuition assistance to more than 20% of our students. By helping the school as we recruit and retain students, it gives more and more children the opportunity to realize their potential. We are especially grateful to the following individuals, companies, and foundations that have generously contributed to the Founders Promise Fund and its endowments this year.

The David and Marcia MacLane Endowment for Scholarship is part of the Founders Promise Fund. To honor the work and legacy of the late David T. MacLane, The Country Schoolβs first headmaster, and his wife, Marcia, a special scholarship fund was created in 2012. Established by the MacLanesβ son, Duncan β64, and his wife, JoAnn, the MacLane Endowment creates learning opportunities for those whose options were previously limited, benefiting both the scholarship recipients and The Country School community as a whole.
Since its establishment only a decade ago, the fund has grown to $292,000, already helping to educate 16 students who otherwise could not have afforded to attend and become leaders at The Country School and then beyond. We thank all donors who support this fund.

The Country Schoolβs 59 faculty members make a living and make a life on campus, often wearing hats beyond the classroom β as coaches, as parents, as advisors, as trip leaders, as committee chairs. This endowment allows us to increase salaries and stipends, bringing us closer to public school compensation and better-endowed independent schools. Donors may make a gift in honor or memory of the teachers, staff members, and administrators whose impact lives in their hearts.
Today, the ability to competitively compensate our valued teachers presents a challenge as the cost of living is increasing more quickly than tuition can be increased. Over the past two years, 10 families have come together with gifts to initiate the Endowment Fund for Teachers, hoping to inspire our entire community to make a difference for our teachers who shaped the lives of our alumni and continue to nurture the minds of our future alumni. We aim to add $2,650,000 to the Teacher Endowment, with the annual draw earmarked specifically to invest in three key areas for faculty: compensation, professional development, and eventual retirement.

ClaSS of 2024 GReenhouSe & endoWment
Legacy giving is a long-standing tradition at The Country School, as families of each graduating class stretch to leave the school even stronger for future generations. As a way to give back to their school, the families of the Class of 2024 put their combined gifts towards the Class of 2024 Greenhouse and the Class of 2024 Endowment Fund. The Greenhouse is an extension of our Childrenβs Garden and provides an outdoor classroom for our PreSchool-8th Grade students.

Outdoor Education Endowment Fund
Outdoor Education at The Country School is a school-wide undertaking that uses the outdoors as both teacher and classroom. The Country School emphasizes the importance of the outdoors in programs that begin in PreSchool and culminate right before 8th Grade Graduation. During their years at The Country School, our students hike the Jordan Katz trails that surround campus and master challenges on our ropes course; they paddle canoes along the Connecticut River and Delaware Water Gap; and they climb mountains, scale rock walls, and ride river rapids in Utah. These students travel well beyond their New Haven County campus.

AluMni giving
Our alumni graduate when they are in their early teens; yet, they remember The Country School in their philanthropy many years later. For this, we are most appreciative and grateful for your support!

The Heritage Society was established more than a decade ago in response of the desire of families and individuals close to The Country School to support the school in perpetuity. Including The Country School in an estate plan is tax deductible and a sensible way for donors to take care of themselves and then take care of our school. We are grateful to those who have made these gifts to The Country School.
For information on how you can make a gift of this type, please contact Christian Vick, Director of Development.
Gifts made in celebration of, in memory of, and in honor of the important people in life is an exemplary way to support The Country School and honor these special individuals. Thank you to those donors who have made these types of gifts.

The Wonderful Teachers at The Country School
gifts-in-kind
Along with monetary contributions to help close the gap between tuition income and operating expenses, The Country School receives many goods and services that enrich the educational experience of students, improve the campus, and contribute to our fundraisers. These gifts-in-kind, although not monetary, positively impact the operating budget because they allow us to shift funds to areas where most needed. We thank all donors who contributed to The Country School in this manner during the course of this school year.
