WINTER 2024 THE VOICE
STRENGTHENING OUR CONSORTIUM COMMUNITY THROUGH VOICE, CHOICE AND INCLUSION
Quarterly Newsletter for Consortium Employees
From Winter to Spring, and as we transition in, you’ll find great inspiration in this edition of The Voice!
Thanks to Social Justice and Spiritual Care Director, Reverend Gregory Jones, and all our programs and communities for creating the space for us to honor Black History Month! Numerous celebrations and learning opportunities were held throughout February, and all were well attended and appreciated! And in this month of March, we honor Women’s History Month and acknowledge the opportunity for this celebration including International Women’s Day.
With Daylight Savings Time moving us an hour forward this weekend, we cannot help but think of Spring and what is ahead – green grass, warmer days and lighter coats! Simultaneously, we are also adjusting to changes in CDC guidelines for COVID exposure and recovery
Check out this link for find out more: https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2024/p0301respiratory-virus.html
Spring also brings a time to consider our benefits as we prepare for annual insurance enrollment in May and June – have questions or input to provide us? We would love to hear about your experiences Also, this season has us appreciating our one-year anniversary with Trauma Informed Hampshire County – check out their upcoming film showing of “The Disruptors” and our upcoming 20th West Region Self Advocacy Conference in June!
So many great things happening across the Consortium – I’m excited for you to read about the great work happening in Wildflower Alliance including a very meaningful Alternatives to Suicide learning opportunity; also, some new and interesting activities are happening at the Northampton Recovery Center, and I LOVE hearing directly from community members at RECOVER Project. What a FUN time at Home & Community Connections’ Valentine’s Party for folks we support and their families Speaking of fun, Support Network had a great fundraising event that they shared with folks We are also honoring Maria Santos being with us for 20 years – she is amazing! Also, Agency Orientation coming up next in May – if you haven’t been, now is the time to join, you’ll be glad you did!
Thank you for showing up in all the ways you do! We’re so grateful you are here, now. Please read on and enjoy!
In Community,
Kristel

WINTER 2024 THE VOICE
Lift Every Voice: Black History In Community Lift Every Voice: Black History In Community
The Consortium community gathered in February to celebrate Black History Month with a celebration that focused on African Americans in the Arts: Honoring the Impact that Black Americans have had on Visual Arts, Music, Cultural Movements, and more. As we move forward together, we must not forget the significant contributions and advancements made by Black Americans to our collective history. We must raise every voice and share the wisdom, stories, and experiences of our community every day. It's not just our mission, but our reality, and we should continue to embrace it.

The RECOVER Project is a peer participatory program. As such, we thought that it was important to invite the community members, from a peer-topeer perspective to participate in our submission to the Voice. We had an informal Q&A where we asked them, “What do you love about the RP?”
Here are their responses...

"HATE IS TOO MUCH OF A BURDEN TO BEAR. IT INJURES THE HATER MORE THAN IT INJURES THE HATED." CORETTA SCOTT KING
BOOK OF THE QUARTER
Between The World and Me
by Ta-Nehisi Coates
Trauma Informed Hampshire County
Trauma Informed Hampshire County
In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history and current crisis Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden?
Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’s attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son and readers the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children’s lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward You can find this and other books in the Social Justice Library located on the 3rd floor of the Holyoke Office.

There are nearly 2 million people incarcerated in the United States... 1,650 of them live at Pendleton Correctional Facility in Central Indiana.
Suicide rates are already much higher in prison than in the general population...Pendleton's are the highest of any prison in the state. As a Level Three maximum security prison, sentences are long and environments are extremely restricted. Some people remain in their cells 23 hours a day. Locked down cell blocks are loud, yet deeply lonely.
Despite living in this extremely tough environment, these 25 men are committed to building community & support within Pendleton's walls.
They represent the first incarcerated individuals to ever complete an "Alternatives to Suicide" training. Together we grappled with applying "Alt2Su" values to situations of extreme despair; ones that many mental health providers will never face.
