Donna Dickey
By Nick Langton According to the Alzheimer's Association's website, "Alzheimer's disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States and the only cause of death among the top 10 in the United States that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed." Founded in 1980, the Alzheimer's Association is a non-forprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to advancing research of the progressive mental disease which afflicts over 5 mil-
lion Americans. Alzheimer's is a progressive and irreversible mental disease characterized by slow deterioration of the brain's ability to carry out the simplest tasks. The average life expectancy is 10 years after diagnosis. However, it can be as short as three years or as long as twenty. For most people, symptoms begin to appear in their mid 60s. But the disease has been seen in individuals as young as 30. Donna Dickey of Adamsville, Tennessee is one of the many afflicted with the disease. But she is not letting it define her. Dickey was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at age 56. "I was anxiously anticipating retirement, lazy days and trips with my longtime friends, Sherry and Cathy," she said. "Throughout the recession we haven't had to cut any services, but we haven't been able to add any new ones. This year we were fortunate to receive an LSTA grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the Mississippi Library Commission. by Lanessa Miller In 1985, when the Winston County Self help cooperative was first organized, "Small family farmers were under-seize due to unfavorable financial conditions and
USDA's lack of interest to serve black farmers. We needed an outlet to earn more income from our natural resources and increase sustainability in rural Winston County" said founding member Omerio Dotson. The Winston County Self Help Cooperative was the vehicle for small farmers and landowners to work collectively, assisting small farmers and landowners to sell and buy in bulk. Members received animals to enhance and improve cattle genetics and pigs to start swine operations. Other successes include building a feed grinding mill. By 1997, only four of the founding members remained. As President, Frank Taylor put into practice the leadership principles he learned as a student and athlete at Kentucky State University. With a new mantra of "Helping Save Rural America", members focused their energies on accessing services from USDA and non-profit organizations. Founding member Mary Hannah stated, "We formulated a four-point plan of action…finance, health, housing, see WCSHC page 4
