Good boy Gus: Bloodhound on track to become search and rescue dog By Lucy Weber Gus has a nose for work, or what the 110pound, four-footed 1-yearold thinks is play. Billy Miller is preparing his bloodhound to be officially certified by two different search and rescue organizations so Gus can do what he does best - use his nose to follow a scent

wherever it leads. "He's the best bloodhound in the world," said Miller, who started training Gus at 10 weeks. "We're both learning together." Gus is the first bloodhound that Miller has owned but he had always wanted one. When the opportunity arose to get a puppy, "I took it."

From the moment they started learning together, Miller said Gus show promise and aptitude. "It's just a game that he loves." Gus also loves his rewards in training for a job well done. "He is foodmotivated. He doesn't have a favorite - he just likes food," though Gus does have a special fondness for Little Caesar's, watermelon and pineapple, Miller said "He'll try just about anything, except he won't eat cucumbers or tomatoes." Miller said Gus enjoys his training. "We train sometimes 20 hours a week."

The work is paying off. So far, Miller said he's run Gus on scents 12- and even 24-hours old, and he's picked them up and tracked them. "Once, he picked up a week-old track." Once he catches a whiff of the smell he's tracking, Gus is all business. "When he's on a track, all his other senses shut down," Miller said, adding that he makes sure Gus stays on his leash so he can keep the dog safe while his nose is to the ground. Through the training, Miller said he knows to see GUS pg 4
