Detective Mom is on the job at home and at work By Lucy Weber When Detective Heather Russell heads out on a case from home, she hears the sweet sound of her 11-yearold calling "Be careful. I love you." A veteran of the Corinth Police Department since 2008, Russell says serving in law enforcement and enjoying family life with daughter Anniston and husband Ryan make for a perfect work/home mix. At home, they stay busy with Heather Anniston playing softball in the Russell backyard and with her competitive cheerleading squad. The cheerleading season has the family on the road fre-
quently from January to April with Lancaster's Cheer Force. "My boss is great. I give him the cheer competition schedule so he can make sure I'm not on call," Russell said. On the job, Russell looks after youngsters and teens in the community as she investigates crimes against children and juvenile crime. "I see so much more of the bad things that can happen in the community. It makes me worry about her (Anniston) more," she said. But, Russell is confident in her

Talking and Listening: Juvenile detention director says compassion and respect are keys to her success By Galen Holley ALCORN COUNTY - A mother’s touch helps when working with children, especially those who have had legal issues. After nearly two decades in law-enforcement, Shelly Hopkins, director of the Alcorn County Juvenile Detention Center, knows that the sympathy and gentleness of a mother is an invaluable skill to possess. “You have to treat these children
the way you’d want your own children treated,” said Hopkins, mother to sons Chase, 12, and Cooper, 9. Alcorn County is one of 17 juvenile detention centers in the state and serves children ages 10-17 who have committed a criminal

offense. “People ask me all the time how I deal with these kids and my answer is always that I deal with them with respect and dignity and compassion and really talk to them and listen,” said Hopkins. Hopkins started her law-enforcement career as a patrol officer with the Corinth Police Department. She holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Mississippi and once worked as a teacher at Alcorn Central Middle School. She still takes on some teaching duties at the juvenile detention center. Sheriff Jimmy Taylor knew of Hopkins’s work with youth and asked her to head the center in 2006. Today she over-
