Gifted teen's love of writing adds to list of achievements
A mother's lessons in love and strength lead to book with powerful message
By Lucy Weber At age 12, Raegan Everson added "author" to an already full list of accomplishments. Now about to turn 15, the high school freshman is working on a sequel to her young adult novel "Cupcake Dream," available on Amazon. It tells the story of Nicole, who works in her parents' coffee shop. Nicole thought it would be just another ordinary summer at her parents' coffee shop, The Mocha Drizzle. Little did she know her love for baking would earn her a spot at The Pastry Academy in Miami, FL. "I've loved writing for as long as I can remember," said Raegan, the daughter of Nicholas and Yalonda Everson. The family resides in Houston, Texas. She is also the granddaughter of Community News Flash publisher Jerry Porter. "I love that I can express my creativity through words," she said. "I enjoy writing poetry, fiction and non-fiction. I keep a journal also. Whenever I have an idea, I like to jot it down."
By Lucy Weber Juanita Gambrel Floyd found her literary voice by telling her mother's story. Floyd, the vice president of finance and administration for CREATE Foundation in Tupelo, has co-authored a children's book "Summer of 1969: The Story of Cozette Juanita Gambrel" that tells how her mother wisely and lovingly prepared her, a second grader, for integration. Juanita Floyd "It's been a blessing, getting my story out," Floyd said. "My mother told me to make a difference in your little corner of the world." The lesson that Floyd received from her mother and shares through the book, co-written by Sara W. Berry, is "Love is the key regardless of race or color." Growing up in the Red Hill Community in Union County, Floyd was the youngest of seven children. Her much older siblings were grown and living on their own so it was just her and her widowed mother when mandatory integration arose in 1969. As a first-grader, Floyd, along with her friends in the close-knit community, had been bussed to New Albany to B.F. Ford Elementary. With the changes coming, Floyd's mother knew her child would be attending a closer school but would be separated from her friends in attending a white-majority school. "She knew I would be fine in the classroom, but outside at recess I would have the hardest time," Floyd recalled. "My mother only had an eighth-grade education but she was smart." The book, in verse form, details how that summer, without explanation to the seven-year-old, Mrs. Gambrel sent little Juanita outside with books to read each day instead of playing with her as she usually did. Instead, Floyd recalled, "She'd ask me my name." She would answer: "Cozette Juanita Gambrel." Every day, day after day, the same question was asked by her

Hunter is on a journey she never expected. She never imagined cooking, much less writing a cookbook. She also never expected to star in her own YouTube videos, be on television or host a statewide radio broadcast - all centered around food and cooking. Hunter grew up in household she describes as the African American version of the Cleavers from "Leave it to Beaver." Her father was a preacher, and her mother was a homemaker who cooked three wonderful see HUNTER pg 4
