is no overarching crime prevention strategy… · No formal crime prevention training has been delivered to staff who deal frequently with victims of crime and anti-social behaviour, other than to new recruits... · The force’s policy does not require officers to attend all reports of crimes and incidents. Instead it requires the operator to consider the threat, risk and harm to the victim, caller or community and dispatch an officer if the operator believes it is necessary. identified and the appropriate service provided. The operator is required to record the rationale to support their decision whether or not to dispatch an officer following a report to the call centre, but HMIC found limited evidence that this requirement was followed in all cases. · Crime is recorded by the force…. However, in some cases an officer is not dispatched but the incident is flagged for attention by the neighbourhood team. Officers and PCSOs make followup visits at a later stage but their attendance may not be recorded as the incident has been closed on force records. · During the inspection, HMIC reviewed a number of crime investigations including reports of crimes that were not attended. In certain cases, for crimes such as burglary dwellings, there was clear evidence of investigation and supervision. However, for other offences, such as theft from a motor vehicle, many of which were not attended, there was little evidence of meaningful investigation or supervision… · The force was unable to provide HMIC with the number of named suspects yet to be arrested or interviewed. Without this information, the force may be unable to ensure that it has effective arrangements to manage outstanding named suspects and offenders. · A small sample of named suspect files, including those circulated

as wanted on the police national computer, provided little evidence that activity to locate and apprehend them had been documented or properly supervised.
 · There was no clear structure to assist supervisors to assess the workload and performance of frontline officers and staff. This is hindered by the lack of IT support and the use of a paper-based crime management system... · HMIC found that the force does not have a thorough understanding of how staff are spending their time. Although some basic management information is available, more detailed information would help supervisors understand the capacity of their staff and provide more focused tasks. · The force is not able to identify the amount of savings in staff time that has been made as a result of changes or new technology it has implemented. Mike O’Brien said, “I have known Ms Dru Sharpling CBE for over 25 years since her early days as a prosecutor. When Dru Sharpling says there are issues in Warwickshire Police, I believe her.” Mike has called on the County Council to assist the Police. He said, “A simple step would be for the county council to decide to switch street lights back on at night. Recent headlines about the rise in breakin’s and car crime in our area and the number of times the Police have had to ask that the streetlights shows the council ought to reconsider this policy.”

CONTROVERSIAL plans to create a Business Park with an HGV depot an storage on the site of the former Daw Mill Colliery have been withdrawn after a campaign by local residents against the HGV depot and a meeting between the promoters of the site Haworth Estates and North Warwickshire Borough Council Leaders.

Iain Thomson of Haworth Estates met Labour Borough Council Leaders Cllr Mick Stanley and Cllr Ray Sweet on 2 September. Mr Thomson said, “We were told quite clearly that the high levels of HGV traffic generated by B8 Distribution use would not be supported on the site and that our development proposals needed to change in order to address both the communities and Members concerns about the increase in HGV movements and reduce the impact on the B roads and some local crossroads. “We have said all along that we will fully account for feedback and we are exploring ways of making changes to the present application to strike an appropriate balance between retaining an employment use at Daw Mill whilst also respecting and where

possible limiting any impacts on local residents. We will be undertaking this work over the next few weeks in consultation with the Council and once we have an agreed position suggest we brief you ahead of this being subjected to further public consultation. “The redevelopment of Daw Mill is certainly not intended to rival either Hams Hall or Birch Coppice due to its natural constraints and we believe the revisions to the application that we'll be making will further reinforce this point.” Mike O’Brien said, ”Although it’s good that Haworth Estates have dropped their original proposals as a result of the local protests and the opposition of council leaders, that is not the end of it. They will put in

new proposals soon. I remain concerned about the new proposals. “There are two issues. Firstly, will the site be used for B8 warehousing and storage? We want B8 withdrawn because it will require HGV’s and I assume that will happen. The second issue is the use of any HGV’s. We say the local roads are unsuitable for HGV’s and we want assurances that there will be none. “There is general acknowledgement that this site will be a business park but local people don’t want a business park that attracts HGV’s. Haworth Estates could create a business park on that site with offices and hi tech units that do not use HGV’s. If they try to maintain areas for storage of containers then they will use HGVs and the council should reject any such plan.” Two public protest meetings were helped in July, one in Over Whitacre and another in Coleshill. Mike O’Brien said, ”People power supported by the councillors has had some success but this fight is not over yet.”

A group of Travellers pitched up on the pitches of Old Saltleians Rugby Club on the night of 4th October, causing disruption and disturbances in both Water Orton and Coleshill.

While players and club members were socialising and enjoying a well-earned post-match drink, at round 7pm the group drove in through the open gate and onto the pitches. Initial talks between the Rugby Club and the group proved fruitless as they refused to leave; as Dave Reilly from Old Salts commented “This is their life, they know the law. As the Public Order act states, there is no powers to immediately evict if no damage is caused”. Disruption didn’t stop at site, with The Digby Hotel sustaining over a hundred pounds worth of damage from broken glasses, stools and tables causing the pub to remain closed on 7th October; it has since re-opened. The owner Gary Clarke said that he spoke to the group for 15 minutes saying didn’t wish to “tarnish them with the same brush as everybody else is”, but just an hour later they began being intimidating to both customers and workers behind

the bar. Police were also called to the Bell in Coleshill after a group began smashing glasses and being rowdy. When asked the group identified themselves as travellers. The Travellers left on the night of 7th October, following an order issued by the police for them to leave by 11am the following morning; this was in accordance to section 61 of the Public Order act. Dave Reilly wished to express the club’s sincerest thanks to North Warwickshire police along with the members of the local community who came down to show support. He added “The club values respect and teamwork, what we call Salt’s Pride. This was shown not only through how the club came together to overcome this issue, and also our policy of non-confrontation”. No malicious damage was caused to the pitches or clubhouse, which will be reopened from next Monday (13th).The pitch which was camped on is unfortunately closed until 25th October, as Water Orton Councillor Raymond Payne said “It’s not only the disruption they cause while they are here, but also what’s left behind that is a big issue”.

Dan Byles MP highlights to top MPs the Dog Warden service receives impact on local jobs and communities gold award from RSPCA

The Coleshill Post

RECENTLY Dan Byles MP once again accompanied the HS2 select committee on a tour of parts of North Warwickshire affected by HS2.

The committee of MPs will make the final decisions about the route and mitigation measures, and the visit was to help them understand the impact of HS2 on the ground in Warwickshire. Dan Byles has been leading the local anti-HS2 campaign since 2010, and ahead of the visit he liaised with local residents in Bodymoor Heath and Middleton to arrange for them to gather at the committee's stopping points in order to meet the MPs and talk to them face to face. This was the MPs second visit to the area. The committee started at the Lea Marston Hotel and Spa where they met the owner and managing director, before visiting Bodymoor Heath, Middleton House Farm and the village of Middleton. At each location Dan introduced the MPs to local residents and members of the action groups. At Middleton House Farm, which will be cut in half by the train line, they met lo-

cal farmers Gordon and Robert Davies who are the third generation of their family to farm the land. In Middleton Village Hall Dan joined Parish Council Chair Gill Keegan and members of the Action Group in highlighting the impact on the village, and the alternative route they have put forward that would mitigate the effects. Speaking after the visit, Dan said: "We've been fighting against HS2 in principle since 2010 and I voted against HS2 in Parliament, but sadly we lost that battle. Now our efforts need to go into improving the mitigation and compensation. I've worked closely with the local Action Groups on putting together our mitigation proposals, and this visit was an important part of showing the committee the reality on the ground. "I was pleased to have the opportunity to brief the MPs in person about some of the specific issues and difficulties locally, not just from the railway line itself, but for road diversions such as Bodymoor Heath Lane and the potential rat-run up Brick Kiln Lane through to Middleton. The next step will be the peti-

tions themselves." After the visit Dan met with Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Craig Tracey to go over the petitioning strategy. Craig is a small business owner who lives in Shuttington and has worked closely with Dan on the HS2 campaign. He is hoping to take over the baton from Dan, who is standing down as MP in 2015, and has pledged to continue the HS2 campaign and to vote against Phase Two when it comes before Parliament after the next general election. Craig said: "It is vital that we make the most of limited opportunities such as this to highlight the very real and life changing issues that local people are facing as a result of HS2 cutting through our communities. Dan's proactive approach and his leadership on this over the last 4 years gives him enormous credibility on this issue which I am sure will be taken in to account as decisions are made. I will be working alongside him every step of the way to ensure the voices of those affected in North Warwickshire are heard and that the best possible route and mitigation measures are achieved."

Photo: Dog Warden Andrew Kirby with one of the strays at Ninestones Kennels. This very friendly brindle lurcher was found in Fillongley and will be going to Birmingham Dogs Home for rehoming.

The Borough Council’s Dog Warden Service has won the RSPCA gold award for its stray dog service, building on last year’s success with the silver. The awards were introduced in 2010 to celebrate good practice and reward innovation in animal welfare. The criteria for the Stray Dogs Footprint is to have clear policies on the welfare of stray dogs during collection and kennelling; be positive in educating

owners about canine care and have preventative measures to reduce straying. In the last year, North Warwickshire’s Dog Warden service dealt with over 100 stray dogs, many which were taken to Ninestones Kennels in Curdworth. The majority were reunited with their owners or rehomed and only eight were put to sleep because of illness or injury. David Baxendale, Environmental Health Manager at the Borough Council said: “We are extremely proud to have achieved a Gold Footprint Award from the RSPCA for the next 12 months. The Dog Warden Service is a partnership and so we must thank Ninestones Kennels and Birmingham Dog’s Home for the work they do alongside Andrew Kirby, our Dog Warden. He has a large, rural area to cover and also deals with complaints of dog fouling and issues fines to people who don’t clear up after their dogs. So it’s a great achievement for a service, which, according to the RSPCA, is often undervalued. “ To report stray dogs, ring the Borough Council on 01827 715341 or report them online at www.northwarks.gov.uk

An event was recently held at Orchard Blythe in Coleshill where residents worked with professional artist Ruth Spaak, who runs the charity Life With Art, to produce a large silk canvas of their pictures, which will be displayed in the home. The centre based at the bottom of Long Street recently set up the North Warwickshire Wellbeing Group which meets on Fridays. The group for people suffering from mental health issues or the onset of dementia offers a number of art activities for people to take part in. Centre Manager Martin Horner said “the move to link in with Runwood is a spin off from this project, which is funded by North War-

wickshire Works. We are providing a number of volunteers to support the residents alongside the artist and we are also providing cake from our volunteer run project the white Hart Tea Room for refreshments during the day.” A similar event took place at Bracebridge Court, another Runwood Home based in Atherstone. Residents from the home have produced a canvas which will be cleverly combined with the canvas made at Orchard Blythe. This will represent the bond between the two sister homes. Volunteer Janet Gill was recruited by the centre. She has helped out at two events and says she really enjoyed getting involved. "It was great to meet the residents at the two homes. they have different art abilities and it was interesting to see what they came up with to draw onto the canvas. I do a lot of volunteering because it keeps me busy and allows me to meet new people" Overseeing the project at both

Parents join in call for Coventry Road crossing

BY CLLR HARRY TAYLOR LAST Spring Mike O’Brien and myself met with local resident Donna Hebblethwaite and walked with her and her children to school. We had been asked to join their regular morning journey to school to witness how the school children of Coleshill are regularly putting themselves in danger by trying to cross the busy Coventry Road to reach their schools.

Since then more and more Coleshill parents have joined in our call for a crossing on the Coventry Road. From them I’ve heard more stories of near misses and children being dragged out of the path of oncoming traffic, barely escaping injury. Even when a woman wrote to this paper to protest against our campaign for a crossing, she was informed that one of her grandchildren had recently been rescued from injury by a vigilant parent. This ridiculous situation cannot continue in our town. We need a crossing before a child is seriously injured. Our campaign is building. Leaflets are going out and a petition has been started. Warwickshire County Council hold the money and the power to install the much-needed crossing but have dragged their feet for years. Residents and parents are encouraged to write directly to Warwickshire County Council and County Councillor Peter Fowler demanding action on this issue. It is time that our County Councillor stood up and demanded a crossing near the Coventry Road and Packington Lane junction on behalf of the people he represents and the children of Coleshill. We urge him not to take no for an answer.

North Warwickshire’s mining heritage to have a lasting legacy North Warwickshire’s mining heritage is set to help future generations with the announcement of £45,000 of government funding to investigate how mine water could heat homes and businesses. The Borough’s mining past is well documented and only came to an end last year with the closure of the last remaining pit at Daw Mill. However, the underwater sources, which can reach temperatures of 25C, could provide more efficient heating to buildings, cutting car-

bon emissions and reducing energy bills. This heat network means homes and businesses do not need to generate their own heat and can share it through a network of pipes carrying hot water. The new project would boost the Council’s good track record of introducing carbon reduction initiatives, including building more energy efficient Council homes and developing a Carbon Management Action Plan with the Carbon Trust. Councillor Mick Stanley, Leader of North Warwickshire Borough Council said:

“The Borough Council and its communities have been considering how best to mark the passing of coal mining in this area, whilst being very keen to move forward economically. The possibility of using minewater would be an excellent legacy.” The application for the grant from the Department of Energy and Climate Change was made with support from consultants Down to Zero Ltd and the Clean Rivers Trust. With the announcement on 3rd October that the bid had been successful, the Council will now be able to start the feasibility study.

LOCAL schools, community groups, councillors and the general public were given a special sneak preview of North Warwickshire Borough Council’s new £4.2m facility, which offers basketball and badminton courts, indoor five-aside football facilities plus a stateof-the-art gym, a dance studio and two squash courts. Work on the interior fit out of the building is now nearly complete, with the finishing touches to changing rooms, the installation of timber flooring and completion of sports courts underway. Built on the Coleshill School site on

Packington Lane, the new facility will be open for community use, as well as that of the school when it is fully constructed. Work began in November last year. Richard Scarrott, Operations Director, Wates Construction, commented: “Set to become an invaluable recreational space for the community of Coleshill, the new Leisure Centre has understandably attracted a great deal of local interest. Together with the Council, we wanted to give all of those who will benefit from the new facilities the opportunity to see it as construction nears completion. We’re really proud of our work here and it was wonderful to show it off to the people of

North Warwickshire.” Councillor Mick Stanley, Leader of North Warwickshire Borough Council, said: “The Borough Council is really pleased with the excellent progress that has been made with the construction of the new Coleshill Leisure Centre. It represents the culmination of a very constructive partnership with The Coleshill School and an effective working relationship with Wates Construction. The high quality facilities will provide exciting leisure opportunities for the community of North Warwickshire for many years to come and we were delighted to welcome people to have a look at the new Centre on 3rd October”.

Craig Tracey joins Men United to support Prostate Cancer UK CRAIG Tracey, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for North Warwickshire, has pledged to help eradicate the inequalities men with prostate cancer face after speaking with campaigners at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham this week. Despite being the most common cancer in men, those affected by or at risk of prostate cancer continue to face a number of injustices, particularly when it comes

to access to the best treatments and aftercare support for their condition. Prostate Cancer UK was at the Conservative conference calling for urgent action on these issues. As well as pledging long term commitment to helping bring about real change for men, delegates were being asked to show their support for the charity’s game plan by signing up to Men United – a new team which seeks to unite people across the UK against the common enemy of prostate cancer. Craig said “Prostate Cancer UK is an

amazing charity raising awareness and supporting men who have been diagnosed with the disease. 1 in 8 men in the UK will get Prostate Cancer and understanding the symptoms are vital. Joining the Men United campaign is a great way to help getting the message out there and ensure that the best treatments are available”. Whether they’ve been diagnosed or are simply concerned about prostate cancer, men can find out about the disease at www.prostatecanceruk.org.

North Warwickshire Borough Council responded strongly this week to the Government’s latest consultation on measures to compensate those affected by Phase 1 of the HS2 project.

The Government is suggesting two additional measures – a cash payment of 10% of the value of houses within 120 metres of the line and smaller payments for those 120 metres to 300 metres away. The Council, which is leading the fight locally against the disruptive

“The Government’s own figures show that house prices are likely to drop by up to 30% and therefore suggesting compensation of only 10% seems like a deliberate attempt to sell residents short. The consultation scheme is based on a myth that all areas will benefit whereas it has been shown many times that only certain areas of the country, mostly London, will benefit. With these measures HS2 will actually make people in our area worse off if they want to stay in their communities.”

Councillor Tilly May, Conservative Party spokesman for HS2 agreed: “The Council is again totally united on this. Independent reports have shown that the effects of this badly thought out project will be felt further than 300 metres from the line and the Government has already compensated residents up to 1 km away. The proposed measures will not properly compensate residents and will leave many affected without any remedy.” Full details of the Council’s response can be found on their website.

activities. So we at North Warwickshire applaud you for the sterling work you do. Thank you.” Around 80 people attended the event on Tuesday 23rd September held in the Council Chamber at the Borough Council offices. Recipients received a certificate and Council badge.

Coleshill WI September meeting

The Coleshill Post

SEPTEMBER’S speaker Jo Carter, who works as a character actress, playing a lady’s maid at Calke Abbey in Derbyshire, gave a highly entertaining talk entitled ‘Top to Toe – the price of Vanity.’

Mrs Carter explained the role of the lady’s maid through the ages, which often included preparing herbal beauty aids and medicines for her mistress. She described how Queen Elizabeth I dyed her hair red by adding rust and olive oil to diluted urine and how the Romans turned their dark tresses blonde using the plant verbascum, a type of mullein. Through the ages women have used a variety of natural remedies, including aloe, coriander and fennel to cool the eyes, witch hazel to reduce wrinkles, rosewater to soften the skin and even sper m whale fat to whiten it. Olive oil mixed with the red powder from crushed plant pots produced an effective blusher. In the days before toothpaste, when bad breath and abcesses were rife, many

used the crushed stems of rosemary as well as bizarre mixtures of soot, borax, bicarb, olive oil and even eau de cologne to try to clean their teeth and sweeten their breath. Queen Anne took just one bath a year in contrast to Beau Brummel who bathed three times a day – but simply to alleviate his psoriasis. Too often beauty treatments proved excruciating or harmful. The plant belladonna was used to dilate the pupils, to give women huge, staring eyes - but long-term use could cause blindness. Poisonous lead oxide was used for a fashionably pale complexion but the acids which it produced ate away the skin and caused blood poisoning. The great beauty Daisy, Countess of Warwick damaged her skin irreparably with five treatments of mercury and lead oxide. Many young aristocrats caught the pox while on the Grand Tour around Europe, the 18th century version of the Gap Year and covered up the marks with beauty spots shaped like hearts and stars.

Mrs Carter then judged the competition for an unusual scarf, giving first prize to Margot Hawkins’s gauzy, openwork exhibit. Elaine Partridge was second and Betty Oakley third. A group of artistic members achieved third place at the Whitacre Show with their ingenious recycling-themed entry. This included a striking hand-made doll from cut-out paper, beads fashioned from painted rolls of paper and a bag made from scraps of old denim jeans. Jane Mills and Elaine Partridge won the ballot for a bursary to attend a residential course at Denman College and are currently deciding which to choose. Wishaw WI will hold the Autumn Group meeting on October 16th at Curdworth Village Hall with an entertainment based on George Formby’s life and music. The competition is for a pumpkin pie and Coleshill Country Market will have a stall there. The Institute’s darts team, finalists in the last WI county Championship, are already in hard training for this year’s

event and the monthly Scrabble afternoons start on Sept 29th . October’s speaker Clare Ollerenshaw will give a talk on the work of the charity Water

BY CLLR ADAM FARRELL

It is exactly two years ago today since we opened the Coleshill Community Hub in the upstairs office suite of the Town Hall. This time two years ago we were clearing up after a very successful launch event where over 100 local people came to find out about what the Hub was and how it could help them. If you had told us then that in two years’ time we would have three staff, three projects, a visitor centre, a community allotment and nearly £50,000 going through the accounts I don’t think anyone would have believed you. But those of us involved from the very beginning and those who have joined us along the way have always believed that there is a need for a Hub, we have always believed there is a need for a Visitor Centre and we have always believed in the need for a local organisation that does one very simple thing; helps people. I said earlier that the past two years have been busy, that was a bit of an

understatement, they’ve been exhausting! Today is the chance to reflect on why the work we have all put in has been so worthwhile, it’s a chance to say this is what we’ve achieved. Writing our annual report was a chance to see just how much of a difference we have made, at times it was staggering to actually realise how many people we’ve helped and impact we’ve had on the lives of individuals. You can all read our annual report (available on www.coleshillhub.org.uk) so I’m not going to reproduce its words in this month’s column. I do want to set out a few statistics, a few numbers that I think

highlight the success we have had: • Over 1500 client’s issues dealt with at the Hub • Thousands of pounds claimed back in benefits with the help of Hub volunteers • Over 30 people volunteering • £60,000 raised through fundraising • 20 people joined our family History group • 30 people went through our I.T course • 32 people have used gained basic online skills through our links with the Tinder Foundation • 6 business workshops held in partnership with RGN • 20 older people attended our conference with Age UK

action. Megan, our Development Officer joined us in July this year, just three weeks before we opened the Visitor Centre. In those three weeks Megan worked day and night to make sure we opened on time. Since we opened we’ve had over 1200 people through the doors, have volunteers in place, pop-up shops open, an activity corner about to launch and a great relationship with Love Coleshill and local business owners. So a massive thanks to Helen and Megan for their hard work! So all in all it’s been a pretty amazing two years with lots of achievements but we are not stopping there. Later this moth we will open our Community Shed, a project funded by the European Union to provide people with the skills they need to gain employment through practical activities on our community allotment and development activities working as a team and communicating with others. This will be a real community allotment, not just for people who are unemployed, but for the whole community to get involved with. As well as Community Shed project, we’re also expanding our work in digital inclusion with the Tinder Foundation, working closely together with the Rural Growth Network on providing support to business and of course we will continue to develop our Hub and Visitor Centre working closely with Love Coleshill and the Civic Society. So thank you to everyone who has been involved so far and here’s to another amazing year at the Coleshill Community Partnership.

The Coleshill Post

As this edition of the Coleshill Post lands on your doorstep, the Coleshill Community Partnership will have just celebrated its second birthday! We held our Annual General Meeting on Thursday 16th October where I presented our annual report with the following outline of our success.

• Nearly 6000 hits on our websites • Over 1200 people already through the Visitor Centre doors All of this wouldn’t be possible without our hard working dedicated volunteers who have now given over 3000 hours of their time to support our work. When we started to discuss the Hub many people asked the question: could we rely on volunteers? The answer today is emphatically yes! As well as our volunteers we have also received support from Coleshill Town Council, North Warwickshire Borough Council, Warwickshire County Council, Coleshill Civic Society, Love Coleshill, Guideposts, The University of the Third Age, The Coleshill Post, Adult and Community Learning, Love Coleshill, Bussiness46, The Coleshill School, Warwickshire CAVA and North Warwickshire Volunteer Centre. Thank you to all our partner organisations who have helped to support us. Finally I want to thank a couple of individuals who are vital to our success. Firstly we need to thank Helen Whittaker, our Development Manager who often doesn’t realise the impact she has had on our organisation. Since Helen joined us in late 2013 the Hub has doubled the number of client issues that it deals with, has opened its hot desking facility, has opened the Visitor Centre, increased our number of volunteers and become more professional as an organisation. Helen thinks this is merely coincidence but it is not, it is in part Helens hard work that has made this possible. Ideas are great but it is Helen and Megan who put them into

Excluding the Green Party fails both the electorate and democracy Broadcasters’ joint plans to broadcast a series of multi-platform party leader debates in the run-up to the 2015 General Election without Green Party representation, fails the electorate and democracy, says the Green Party. The Green Party, which petitioned directly for inclusion in the debates (1), is considering a legal challenge to this morning’s proposals. Natalie Bennett, Green Party Leader, said: "With these proposals the broadcasters are demonstrating just how out of touch they are with the public mood, and how ridiculously they cling to the idea that the future of politics looks like the past. "It is clear from votes and polls that the public are fed up with the three business-as-usual parties and are looking around for alternatives. "That is also demonstrated by the

soaring membership of the Green parties of England and Wales and Scotland, now exceeding 27,000. "Those members, the fast-growing numbers of likely Green voters (matching Lib Dems numbers), and the majority who back Green policies like bringing the railways back into public hands and the living wage for all workers would be seriously short-changed by debates

from which we were excluded." Prime Minster David Cameron has indicated that if Ukip are involved in any potential debate then the Greens should be too (2). Green Party of England and Wales membership passed 21,000 this week and is up 52% in 2014 alone. The Greens are polling at 7% and above ahead of the 2015 General Election. The polling puts the Party neck and neck with the Liberal Democrats, who the Greens out-performed in the May 22 European Elections, both in terms of total vote received and MEPs returned (3). The Green Party welcomes members and non-members' concerted efforts via online petitions (4), social media and direct appeals to the broadcasters to modify the proposals. Greens are standing in at least 75% of constituencies at the 2015 General Election – 50% more than 2014.

CAROL Hadwen was Head of Science and Physics at King Edwards School Handsworth. Retirement gave her the opportunity to pass on her enthusiasm for science based subjects and our members were treated to a talk based on scientific principals entitled 'Can Earthquakes Be Predicted'. Various regions of the world

have suffered from disastrous earthquakes but due to the location of our islands we have only suffered minor quakes, North Wales being the centre of them. Marie Tharp was an American geologist and oceanographic cartographer, who was the first to map the ocean floor. Her studies were the beginnings of a much greater understanding of earthquakes, but, given all of the in-

formation collected by Carol, she concluded that it is not possible to predict earthquakes...we cannot prevent them. If you are retired or semi retired and would like to meet like minded people and listen to interesting speakers, we would be pleased to welcome you at our monthly meeting on 20th October at Coleshill Town Hall at 10.30. There are a variety of interest groups, both for men and women, to get involved with. Please come along to share a cup of tea or coffee and hear what Geoff Croft of the Walnut Nursery in Shustoke has to say about 'Apple Time'. We might be lucky enough to get a practical demonstration of what can be done with apples. Full details of our group are on our website, www.coleshilland districtu3a.org.uk, be sure to look at the blog for further information.

But nestled away from the lively High Street at the bottom of Station Road is another historic inn that often gets overlooked. The Norton on Station Road has been there for over 100 years, originally built adjacent to Forge Mills railway station. The station has long gone, replaced by the modern Coleshill Parkway. But the pub still

remains. Not only does it remain, it thrives, largely due to the hard work and dedication of two local lads. Adam (25) and Garry (30) took over the Norton 12 months ago and what they have achieved since taking the reins can only be described as stunning. They have transformed this once late night, moody, hard drinkers haunt in to a vibrant, contemporary venue playing host to business functions, parties, live music and above all, a truly amazing food menu. Adam tells us: “My family has been involved with the Norton for many, many years. I took over the running of the pub

COLESHILL has been the venue of choice for pub goers for hundreds of years. Our rich coaching town heritage can still be seen in the town with the likes of the Swan Hotel and The Green Man.

in October last year from my Mom. When I received the offer I jumped at the chance, having worked behind the bar for some years I felt I could massively improve the place by bringing a fresh, modern approach to the way things are done.” “To make my plans succeed I decided to bring in a long-time friend of mine, Garry, and to be honest, we work so well together, bouncing ideas of each other and keeping one another in check.” Another integral part of this dynamic partnership is head chef Lucas. Garry added: “Lucas had worked here for a while under the previous management, churning out bog standard pub grub as required. But we saw something in him that excited us. We gave him free rein to create a brand new menu and ever since then his talent has shone through. The food we serve really is something special.” Keen to shake off the old image of a dingy pub that attracted a few undesirables, the lads worked hard on the place, renovating the entire building inside and out. They moved the pool table in to an outbuilding, built a veranda with an outside bar and installed a 10ft screen in the beer garden. Adam explains the subtle tweaks that make the difference: “This pub has always been busy on weekends. People like to get together to eat, drink and have a good time. Now that we have made it so much more welcoming it is getting even more popular. But don't expect the same Friday night you might have had 3 or 4 years ago. We have lots of live bands now on Fridays which has changed the clientel dramatically and of course we take the safety of our customers very seriously, we now employ 5 door men

on Friday and Saturday nights.” There is quite a team now at the Norton, lots of bar staff, kitchen staff, door staff and I am sure a few more that work behind the scenes. Not only does it provide much needed jobs for local people, but by sourcing their ingredients locally the money they spend stays in the local economy. “We buy our veg from a local farm, our meat from local butchers, we employ local people, we provide functions for local business, large and small, we have a bouncy castle on the weekends for the little ones. We feel like part of a community, and together we all work so hard to make it work.” added Garry. Keen to support the local community the pair recently witnessed their first football match as official kit sponsors. “We were approached by Coleshill Town Colts Under 11's seeking sponsorship for the new season. help. We want to help the community by giving something back. It's so rewarding knowing that we've helped the youngsters at Coleshill Colts to continue playing.” Adam exclaimed. There is a real sense of community and family down at The Norton, a community that I am sure will be there to see Adam and Garry celebrate their first birthday in a few weeks time. “It's a big milestone for us, 12 months ago we could never have imagined just how much it would take to make this work, both mentally and physically, not to mention financially. I'd like to thank everybody who has helped and supported us along the way and long may The Norton continue, so many people rely on it.” Their hard work and commitment really has paid off for the duo, it seems like the only way is up from here on.

In recent times, for one reason or another, we have seen a handful of different managers at the venue, all of which have moved on to pastures new. But the latest husband and wife duo to take on the pub are well and truly here to stay, and for all the right reasons. Richard and Jess Hindson took charge of the Railway in mid September this year and instantly set about transforming the place. Richard commented: “We were looking at pubs in and around Warwickshire and none of them quite fit the bill. But when the brewery asked us to view the Railway I instantly saw the potential. It was in a bit of a state and desperately in need of some TLC but nothing a few late nights with a paintbrush wouldn't fix. A few weeks after signing the lease we were ready to open the doors.” The search for their perfect location has taken them a long way from home. Originally from Co, Durham in the North East, Richard has been a chef for over 16 years working with some of the most prestigious chefs in the region including Terry Laybourne, the first Michellin Star chef in Newcastle and Paul Ohara amongst others. Jess has been front of house at many different restaurants, cocktail bars and hotels including The Hilton. It was whilst working at the same venue that the couple first met. Jess added: “Richard was head chef and I was front of house and we both got on really well. When he moved on to another restaurant I followed and we have been together ever since. Within 5 years we were married and running our own restaurant in Darlington near to where Richard grew up.

“The owner of the property decided to sell up so we started to search for our next pub. This led us to Warwickshire and The Railway.” Given Richard’s wealth of experience you might expect his menu to be varied and contemporary, and you'd be right. “Everybody who visits the Railway will be wowed by a real dining experience. I will only ever use local ingredients in my dishes. The beef I use is Hereford beef reared at Mill Farm in Maxstoke supplied by Farmers' Butchers in Coleshill and vegetables come from AM Cooper at Mullensgrove Farm near Curdworth.” “You'll also see various fish dishes on the menu, a real passion of mine. I spent some time at Italian restaurants, a style that really shows in my fish dishes. The classics I create have a French feel and Sunday Lunch is a real authentic Sunday Lunch with Cauliflower Cheese and fresh vegetables.” Amazing food coupled with first class customer service really does make the Railway a fantastic new dining venue for Coleshill. But the pair have not forgotten the pubs roots. The bar is always popular with the locals, many old regulars happy to see the place restored to it's former glory. The roaring log fire makes for a real warm welcome to this truly inspiring restaurant. Jess and Richard's hard work really has paid off and judging by the quality of their food and service the Railway is certain to maintain it's reputation as the 'go-to' pub in the area.

Demand for Jamie’s dog grooming services has culminated in the need to expand again which is why J-K9 has moved into larger, more suitable premises to accommodate their ever growing client base.

His company, J-K9 Grooming has been established now for over 5 years now. Jamie fell in to the trade by chance a little over ten years ago after feeling the need for a change in career. He began by volunteering Weekends at a dog grooming salon in Solihull whilst still working full time. After 12 months he went on a dog grooming course at Look North Training Centre in Yorkshire and was trained by Joanne Angus, Eurogroom Champion and Groomer of the Year (1991, 2001).‘’I wasn’t sure what to expect when getting into dog grooming but soon found I had a natural talent for it’’ After his course, Jamie applied at several grooming salons in the local area and got a temporary position as a dog groomer at a boarding kennels. Soon after he became the permanent groomer. Four and a half years flew past and he decided it was time to go it alone and so Jamie started up his own dog grooming business, initially from his garden shed in Water Orton. 6 months after setting up he was fully booked, so a new premises was needed. J-K9 moved to Coleshill and Canine Hydrotherapy was added along with the sale of quality dog foods and accessories. Jamie really does seem to have that magic touch. His passion

and experience is clearly evident and he explains why it’s so important to be passionate and qualified. “Unfortunately you do not need to be qualified to work as a dog groomer, but myself and those that work with me are all highly qualified in various areas. I myself am qualified to level 3 City and Guilds Dog Grooming and level 3 qualified in Canine Hydrotherapy, I take great pride in that fact. But the most important factor is my real love for animals. They are my life and I think that my passion really shows in my work. ” Working alongside Jamie at the new premises on Gorsey Lane is Natasha Stone, a trained Canine Hydro Therapist with a National Diploma in Applied Science (Animal Management). Natasha has worked

with animals for over half of her life, mostly with dogs and cats. ‘Animals are my life and there is nothing I find more fulfilling than working with them. They are my passion and I find it so rewarding to work with dogs on a daily basis.’’ Rachel Johnson joined the team a little over a year ago bringing with her a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Animal Behaviour and Welfare.

Day Care

J-K9 is now fully licensed by North Warwickshire council to care for up to 15 dogs on a daily basis in their new Doggie Day Care centre. The new location is ideal for working dog owners, being at the centre of the busy Coleshill industrial area, workers and residents in the area can save time and

have peace of mind that their dogs are literally around the corner and above all, being cared for properly. Natasha commented: “The new premises is perfect for dog day care. People now have the opportunity to bring their dogs to us for day care when they are at work all day and don’t like to leave their dogs at home alone or the owners can enjoy a day out or have their canine companions looked after during a family event.’’ There are many benefits to dog day care such as mental stimulation, exercise and socialisation. A bored, unfulfilled dog can develop behavioural problems such as aggression, excessive barking and destruction. Day care can help by keeping your dog active through the day and challenge his mind with basic training, games and socialising with other dogs. Many dogs also don’t get the

exercise they need to keep them fit and healthy. Due to modern day busy lives we often don’t get the time to walk our dogs as often as we would like. Day care can help by exercising your dog through the day to help keep them fit and healthy. Many dogs don’t get the opportunity to socialise with other dogs when they are young or on a regular basis, so they can lack some of the basic social skills needed to interact with other dogs in a friendly manner. Day care can provide a safe and friendly environment for your dog to learn these important social skills with other friendly dogs. J-K9 offer flexible opening hours to accommodate their clients working schedule. The passion and knowledge of the entire team is so encouraging. This is certainly not your run of the mill dog groomers. Our pets become like family members so give them a little treat and pop them down to Jamie, they are guaranteed to feel right at home.

£10,000 boost for local charity THE Coleshill Community Partnership is celebrating after receiving £10,000 from the European Union’s Social Fund. The charity is behind the successful Hub and Visitor Centre in the town and with this new funding; plans to open a community allotment and shed to help people back into work. The Community Shed will operate from the Stonebridge Road allotment site and provide local people with the chance to gain new skills build up their confidence and become more active in the local community.

Chairman Adam Farrell said, “We’re delighted to have been awarded this funding. We’ve operated the Town Hall Hub for nearly two years now and have noticed a not insignificant number of cases where we can’t do as much as we’d like to help. This new project will enable us to provide practical skills training for local people in a relaxed informal environment.” The project will bring wireless internet and community space to the allotment site and aims to be a place for the whole community. As part of the project the Coleshill Community Partnership are recruiting for a new member of staff for a

fixed term of 8 months. If you’re interested in community based work and have experience of working with vulnerable people, visit www. coleshillhub.org.uk for information on how to apply. The European Social Fund is administered by the Heart of England Community Foundation. A working party to help clear the site is set to be organised at the end of October. As we began to dig out for the drains, it seemed as though the weather was solidly against us. It was soul destroying to have neatly dug out the front footings, only to have them wash in on themselves because of bad weather. This happened several times which led to us having to use twice as much concrete as we had originally planned to. However, we persevered and managed to build the front damp course and bay area without too much more hassle from the elements! By this time we had reached the near height of the summer, and we were all getting a good farmers tan in the process! We finished off the rest of the footings, and lay the reinforced floor, using 33cube or concrete with a further 28cube in the back footings. our savings, an extremely helpful builder’s BY STEVE CUDDY As you can imagine the hours which we merchants and (our saving grace) a very work are extremely tough, working 14-16 Have you ever wondered why you good friend of mine, Kevin Piri, we began. hours a day (while the weather is good) can Bridal catwalk GeorgeLewis Suite certainly start to take its toll. Moving on to the day which we poured the concrete into the reinforced outside wall – this is a day which neither myself, Matt nor Paul will forget in a long time! To give you an idea of what we were aiming to achieve; the wall has a total length of 35m and is 3m high, with a 180mm cavity that needed to be filled with 30cube of concrete. One side of the wall is lined with a hightech tanking gas membrane (which is similar to a self-adhesive flashband used for a temporary roof repair) and the other side is a simple 4” concrete block construction. Once the concrete wagon and pump arrived the operator expressed concern as to whether the wall would be able to take the

Glitzy Bits Boutique celebrated their first birthday in style on 2nd October at the Cameo suite with a swish fashion show attended by over 70 people. Their intention was to showcase the autumn/winter fashion trends, and models Janey, Doreen, Rosemarie, Carol, Mandy, Jen and Linda did an excellent job! As well as modelling up to the minute fashions they provided a peek of autumn chic accessorised with the latest handbags, clutch bags, jewellery, belts and of course shoes and boots. It was like Paris Fashion week – in Coleshill! The catwalk down the centre of the room was lit by sparkling chandeliers and the models showed off their palazzo pants and trumpet sleeve tops, lycra trousers and batwing jumpers, diamanté tunics, georgette crossover tops and gypsy tops to upbeat music and the flash of the photographer’s camera. Leopard print and dogtooth check dresses and the fantastic selection of wraps, capes, gilets and ponchos in a huge variety of styles, colours and fabrics including fur and faux fur trim not forgetting the all important accessories to set off the outfit to perfection. Coleshill United Church Macmillan Coffee Morning raised £625

BY SAMANTHA ROSE

The Gate Inn is a popular community pub. It has a rustic feel with photos of the locality decorating the walls.

On this evening we were once again greeted as friends and started by having a drink in the lounge, chatting freely with the staff and other patrons. Again the atmosphere was warm and homely with the smell of home cooked food in the background. There were fresh flowers on each table, soft lighting and romantic music played in the background. The Gate have employed a new chef, Joey, who also came to chat with us before retreating back to the kitchen to complete our culinary delights. We decided not to take a seat in the conservatory and were accommodated where we were sitting with ease. The first course was fresh warm bread and home-

made dips which was a perfect start to our Spanish themed night. Next came the calamari – fresh and melt in the mouth – with lemon mayonnaise. This dish was beautiful and light. We were also bought chicken goujons with garlic and barbeque dips. The Frittata was colourful, light and tasty. The meatballs in tomato and peppers and the pulled pork with homemade Jack Daniels sauce were fresh and flavoursome and left me satisfied and content. This was all washed down by a bottle of quality red wine at a very reasonable price. The staff were very attentive and bought out each course right on cue. Once again a delightful evening enjoyed by all. Friday 28th November at 7.30pm at Maxstoke Golf Club, The Gate are raising money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital & Woodlands School in Coleshill. 1920’s outfits are a must. Tapas night at The Gate

@ColeshillPost

What a lovely morning we all had, it was nonstop from 10am onwards, serving coffee, tea and lovely home baked cakes. There was a Large Raffle, Tombola, a Bric a Brac stall and Guess the Weight of the Cake. A lot of thought and work goes into organising this annual event but it is all worthwhile when we receive the support of the town. We would like to thank everyone who came, gave prizes, donations of all kinds and also our band of willing helpers. This was a brilliant effort from everyone and it is encouraging to think we are helping the Macmillan Nurses who give support to patients with cancer and their families in their own homes.

The Secret History of Coleshill BY JIM SPENCER

Daniel Defoe

The Coleshill Post

PERHAPS you would care for a glass of port? The night is cold, and the fog rubs its back upon the window-panes. Listen, stranger!

Storm and wind; mist and snow. Hark! The wind gets high. But never mind, the blazing hearth will warm us here. Are you comfortable, stranger? Then let us start, for tonight we shall travel a great distance - over 300 years - to visit a Coleshill in the grip of political and religious fervour. This is the true story of the lone Whig, the Jacobites, and Daniel Defoe. To begin at the beginning: In 1688, the Glorious Revolution forced King James II to flee to France, and removed the threat of a Catholic dynasty. Parliament offered the crown jointly to William of Orange and his wife Mary (Protestant daughter of the deposed king). For some, particularly the Whig politicians, James had been a Catholic despot, whose overthrow was essential for the establishment of a constitutional monarchy in Britain. His supporters, however, would never forget that he was the rightful ruler, and that his son – James Francis Edward Stuart – should have been heir to the throne; these were the Jacobites, and Coleshill was full of them. For many years - right through the Hanoverian succession the town must have longed for their ‘King Over the Water’. Daniel Defoe, most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe, was a staunch supporter and defender of William & Mary. Prior to the Glorious Revolution he had taken part in the Monmouth Rebellion (a failed attempt to overthrow James II). Defoe would later plan a business partnership with a man who had been persecuted and forced to leave Coleshill – because he was the only Whig in the town. Let us travel back to the reign of George I - when Coleshill was still consumed by Jacobitism - and hear what Defoe has to say about the place. From A Tour Thro’ The Whole Island of Great Britain, Divided into Circuits or Journies, by Daniel Defoe [17241727]: ‘From Litchfield we came to Tamworth, a fine pleasant trading town, eminent for good ale and good company, of the middling sort; from whence we came into the great road again at Coleshill in Warwickshire. This is a small but very handsome market-town; it chiefly, if not wholly belongs to the Lord Digby, who is lord of the mannor, if not real owner of almost all the houses in the town, and as that noble person is at present a little on the wrong side as to the government, not having taken the oaths to King George, so the whole town are so

eminently that way too, that they told me there was but one family of Whiggs, as they call'd them, in the whole town, and they hoped to drive them out of the place too very quickly.’ The Whig in question was a Mr John Ward, and Defoe would later befriend him. Let us now discover the circumstances which forced Mr Ward out of Coleshill. From The Works of Daniel De Foe: With a Memoir of His Life and Writings, by William Hazlitt [1840]: ‘[Defoe] was engaged in some commercial concerns, the nature of which remains unknown. His partner in this speculation was a Mr Ward, who for many years carried on a respectable business as a mercer and draper at Coleshill, in Warwickshire...Mr Ward was the only Whig in the town; but being a man of a mild temper, and of inoffensive manners, he gained the respect even of his enemies...The curate of Coleshill, whose name was Badger, paid a visit one afternoon to Mr Ward, who had the company of other neighbours. Whilst they were enjoying themselves over a cheerful bottle, the Jacobite priest thought fit to propose for a toast the health of James the Third, which, from prudence and principle, Mr Ward declined to drink. This irritated the parson so much that he threatened to drive him from the town, and from that time he lost his business. After this occurrence the spirit of malevolence was further manifested in the following imprecation written upon his door: “Curse and confusion, hell and dam-

nation, Be to Ward and his generation.” ‘The machinations of his enemies at length obliged him to leave the town, and he settled at Nuneaton, in the same county...their scheme, whatever it was, proved unsuccessful, and Mr Ward suffered considerably in his fortune by it.’ Their scheme was, in fact, a tile factory and farm, which they planned to open together. A more recent publication will allow us to understand better. From Daniel Defoe: His Life, by Paula R. Backscheider [2004]: ‘[Defoe] felt a “great kindness for” Ward and was, therefore, offering him a partnership. The original plan was for the two men to stock the farm, work it for maintenance and profit, and begin

to build the brick and tile works. In fact, Defoe, at sixty-four, seems actually to have planned to live on the farm... Ward put up his £150 share, and furniture, rugs, dishes, and blankets for the house and stock for the farm began to arrive. Workmen began the kiln and buildings. ‘Robinson Crusoe had set up just such a farm in Bedford when he returned to England and had rejoiced by comparing himself to the Old Testament Job... Defoe intended to bring his life to the same kind of closure. Some time shortly after his agreement with Ward, however, Defoe’s wife became uneasy about his travel and may even have found out about the agreement. According to Ward, Defoe asked him to sign new papers in which Defoe was no longer a partner.’ The project was in tatters, and Ward had lost a great deal of money. But nothing compares to the shocking fact that he was driven from his own town; a place in which he had been a prominent figure with a successful business. How did Coleshill come to be populated by such fervent Jacobites? According to William Hazlitt [1840]: ‘The seeds of Jacobitism were sown at Coleshill by Mr Kettlewell, who was dispossessed of the vicarage for refusing the oaths to the government in 1690. Thomas Carte, the historian...was zealous in propagating the same anti-revolution principles. Badger was probably his curate. The political bias of the inhabitants was owing principally to the influence of Lord Digby, who owned most of the town...being himself a friend to the Stuarts, he took care to place such clergymen there as were zealously attached to his own politics.’ Kettlewell, Carte, and Badger. Did their preaching whip up a fanatical Jacobite frenzy? John Kettlewell (1653-1695), minister of the town, certainly had a way with words. In 1686 he delivered a sermon at Coleshill entitled ‘The religious loyalist: or, A good Christian taught how to be a faithful servant, both to God and the King.’ Kettlewell was a fa-

mous non-juror and devotional writer, whose work attacked defenders of the Glorious Revolution. He was granted the vicarage of Coleshill by Simon Digby, 4th Baron Digby, in 1682 – where he preached the high church doctrine of ‘passive obedience’ (promoting absolute supremacy of the crown, and treating any form of dissent as sinful and unlawful.) Such a persuasive, powerful, and public figure was bound to attract attention, and – in 1690 – he was deprived of the vicarage. The Rev. Edward Badger (1685-1756) was Master of Coleshill Grammar School, and was, as we have already seen, instrumental in forcing John Ward from the town. His devotion to the Jacobite cause will become clearer, as we investigate the final character in our story: Thomas Carte (1686-1754), the notable English historian. Carte received an MA from King’s College, Cambridge in 1706, and was ordained around 1714. He refused to take the Oath of Allegiance (following the accession of George I), and was consequently suspended from clerical service. He became embroiled in the ‘Jacobite rising’ of 1715, having attracted the suspicions of government, and was later implicated in the famous Atterbury Plot. The Chronological Historian, by William Toone, gives the following entry for the year 1722: ‘Aug. 13. A proclamation issued, offering a reward of 1000l. for apprehending Mr Thomas Carte, a nonjuring clergyman, accused of high treason.’ Carte was now a wanted man – but Badger would save his skin: Literary Anecdotes of the Eighteenth Century, by John Nichols [1812]: ‘I know not what share [Thomas Carte] took in the rebellion of 1715; but I am well assured that at the close of it he was concealed at Coleshill, from the search of the King’s troops, in the house of Mr. Badger, then curate of that town...Mr. Carte officiated some time as curate of Coleshill; and is said to have acted as secretary to Bishop Atterbury before his troubles.’ The coast was clear, and Carte was able to flee to France – where he adopted the name of Philips. Jacobitism would eventually decline as a serious political force. The final rebellion would come in 1745 – commonly referred to as ‘the Forty-Five’ – and result in a decisive government victory. The spirit of the movement would, however, live on through songs, literature, and even Jacobite clubs. And that, dearest reader, concludes our tale. I believe, after such an academic ramble, we are both entitled to another glass of port. So, please, join me in a traditional toast - to the ‘King Over the Water’! No? Curse and confusion, hell and damnation...

Mortgage lenders looking at affordability Over the last 6 months lenders, advisers and borrowers have had to adjust to a more stringent assessment of mortgage applications following the implementation of the Mortgage Market Review ( MMR) back in April which I wrote about at the time. This change led to greater timescales in the delivery of advice and assessment of mortgage applications and the knock on effect has been that it has taken longer to secure a mortgage and therefore complete on the desired purchase. In the majority of cases it has not changed the ultimate outcome as lenders are willing and able to advance mortgages and borrowers have not changed in their financial profile. These changes have had the effect that lenders are now able to demonstrate that they are lending sensibly by way of the more diligent verification of borrowers ability to service their new mortgage. However, the perception is that it is now harder to obtain a mortgage which is not entirely accurate. A common sense approach is that if

“ The perception is

that it is now harder to obtain a mortgage which is not entirely accurate. ”

you can prove your income, manage your finances sensibly and have not over committed yourself with unsecured loans and credit cards then you should get a mortgage and this is how the market now operates. This perception over the difficulty to obtain a mortgage is also having a knock on effect with people who would otherwise wish to move home as they are not venturing into trying to sell their home as they think it may be difficult to obtain a new mortgage. This has led to a reduction of new properties com-

ing on to the market and a slowing down generally. Lenders vary widely in their criteria and so it is important before looking at moving or buying for the first time to speak to an Independent Mortgage Adviser who can look at the Whole of Market as for every lender who might not be willing to agree a mortgage for you there will most likely be ones who will. Lenders are looking to agree mortgages where it is sensible and affordable to do so and are becoming competitive with new deals. In the last few

weeks we have seen an increase in the number of lenders offering 5 year fixed rates at under 3%. These low rates are available with deposits of at least 30% and with smaller deposits long term fixed rates are not much higher than this. So in summary low mortgage rates are still available and lenders are happy to agree mortgages where they deem you can afford the mortgage applied for. Therefore if you are considering moving or buying for the first time please feel free to contact me for advice in securing your next or first mortgage. In all cases we charge a fee for mortgage arrangement of £195 on completion of the transaction plus any commission paid by the lender. Alternatively, you can choose to pay a fee of 1% of the mortgage amount subject to a minimum of £995 and receive the commission from the lender. It was dedicated to the town for leisure use by the local Digby family after World War 2, in memory of those who died. It is owned and managed by Coleshill Town Council and is a very valuable resource for the community. At present, the Park is home to the historic Coleshill Cricket Club, two football pitches, a basketball court and two tennis courts. There is also a skate park and the recently refurbished children’s play area alongside the pavilion. Coleshill Town Council have recently secured funding towards some much needed improvements for the Park and given the go ahead for Moore Environment, a local company of landscape architects, to prepare a master plan for some ambitious proposals. Key objectives for the improvements will be to give the space a real ‘town park’

character, to provide attractions and facilities which will make it a ‘must visit’ destination for local people and significantly increase user numbers. Possible proposals include:-

• Further play facilities, with more challenging equipment for older children and inclusive equipment for all ages and abilities • Water play or features • New seating and sitting areas for socialising, watching sport, eat lunch, picnic or just taking in some fresh air • New tennis courts • Trim trail or exercise equipment along new cycling/walking/running routes • New tree and shrub planting and improvements to existing planting, enhancing the character and structure of the park • Features to encourage wildlife such as wildflowers and nest boxes, areas of wild garden

• Information boards about the Park and improvements, the history, the cricket club, what can be seen in views out, information on wildlife. Existing sports and play facilities will be retained and improved and facilities for new sports will be considered. The problems of anti-social behaviour will be addressed as part of the proposals, improving the experience of the Park as a safe and secure environment for all of the people of Coleshill to spend time. The provision of a bandstand is also being discussed. This would give the Park a true identity and sense of place as the centre of the community. It would also be an iconic focal point, celebrating the very successful town band and being available for concerts, as well as community and possibly formal civic events. Coleshill Town Council wants to ensure that the Park improvements truly reflect the needs and aspirations of those who live in the town. As part of the development of the master plan,

the local community will be invited to contribute their ideas for improvements. Schools, users and neighbours of the Park, and all interested community groups will also be consulted. As a first step, a questionnaire seeking local views is being made widely available. Apart from the pull out available in this newspaper, it will also be delivered to neighbouring houses and available in venues such as Coleshill library, town hall and visitor centre. There is also an online version to complete at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ ColeshillMemorialPark. The closing date for submissions is 14th November 2014. In advance of this closing date, there will be a consultation event at the Cricket Club on 1st November 2014 from 2pm till 4pm, where you can come and discuss potential improvements with a member of the design team from Moore Environment. In the new year, a competition for children is proposed, and will be managed through local schools, that

will allow them to design an element or feature of the park such as a piece of play equipment or artwork for pavement or boundary features. When the work starts on site there will be opportunities for everyone to be involved, perhaps by planting wild flowers or trees. It is likely that the works will need to be carried out in phases to match the availability of funding, but all proposals will be included on the master plan. Landscape Architects Moore Environment, have been based in Coleshill since 1997 and are ideally placed to assist the Council on this project. Barry and Sue Moore, Directors of the company, also live in Coleshill and, as frequent users of the Park, are well aware of its potential. They are very pleased to have the opportunity to help with the proposed improvements. Overleaf you will find a short questionnaire that we would like you to complete. Please take this as your opportunity to provide input to the improvements of the park.

While things are still growing and there are wonderful colours to enjoy there are also routine tasks to be done to prepare for winter. Now is the time to gather up leaves, especially from lawns. A small amount may be added to your compost heap but making leaf mould is the best way to make use of them. If you have the space and don't want to go to the expense of buying a dedicated container use large bin bags

tied loosely and with some holes punched in the sides. In about 18 months you will have useable leaf mould for mulching or enriching your soil. Its also the time to plant bulbs such as Narcissi and Daffs as well as Alliums, Snowdrops and Crocuses . Plant Tulips in November. Garden centres now have their displays set up. Early onions and garlic can also be planted now. In garden ponds remove dead lily leaves and cut back oxygenating plants. Make sure you keep falling leaves out and reduce the amount of food you give your fish. Cut back dead perennials and divide clumps of them if they are getting overcrowded. Prune back Buddleja and

tidy climbing roses by shortening stems and removing dead and dying branches. Clean out bird feeders and wash them to prevent the spread of diseases and do the same for the bird boxes: birds will use them for shelter. If you are building a bonfire for November 5th remember to check it for hibernating hedgehogs and toads! It's approaching the time when lawns will need final cut but in the mean time raise the cutting blades when mowing. Lawns can be given a winter feed now. I find it genuinely cheaper to use one of our local lawn maintenance firms to do this as part of their annual services. We've had a good summer and some beautiful early autumn weather so lets keep our fingers crossed fro some dry days to get these essential jobs done!

Annual North Warwickshire Allotment Federation Awards

A harvest festival table of home grown veg took centre stage at the North Warwickshire Allotment Federation's annual awards held at the Red Lion in Atherstone. The Allotment Federation was originally set up in 2008 to support the allotment community. The awards highlight celebrate their

various achievements and include the categories 'Best Site'; 'Best Kept Plot', 'Best newcomer' and 'Most improved.' Since the awards were set up, the number of sites in the running has increased from 5 to 11 and the plots from 11 to 60. As Secretary Karin Cartwright commented: "We like to encourage the shrinking violets."North Warwickshire Allotment Federation awards

The Mayor of North Warwickshire Councillor Ray Sweet, who maintains an allotment in Baddesley, presented the awards and commented: " If you have an allotment, you become part of a community. You look after each other and watch out for each other - plus it's a wonderful keep fit exercise." To find out more, go to www. nwafnewsite.webs.com

LIVE REVIEW:

Kate Bush Before the Dawn EVENTIM HAMMERSMITH APOLLO | WEDNESDAY 24TH SEPTEMBER 2014

BY AMANDA BAKER Firstly a declaration of interest- I love Kate Bush. I’ve loved Kate Bush since my mid teens, hooked in by the 1985 Hounds of Love LP. Sitting crossed legged in my friend’s lounge mesmerised by the Whole Story video collection, my requests to borrow it declined as it belonged to her dad. Kate Bush, aside from her physical attributes that appealed to dads and older brothers alike, seemed to encapsulate an essence of strong, self-determined femininity that spoke to a generation. Intelligent, talented not tarty, creative and pioneering. She was the first female to have a self-penned number one hit, which shockingly took until 1979 in the UK. Her last live performances in 1979 at the Hammersmith Apollo had met with great critical acclaim, a combination of rock concert, theatre, mime and performance art, with speculation that the show may tour nationwide. Instead in the following 35 years Kate had chosen to focus on recording albums, admirably not for solely for commercial success but on producing authentic work true to her own vision. So in March 2014 when a series of live dates were announced a furore of excitement ensued. With unprecedented demand, tickets for the 22 concerts sold out within 15 minutes, only the lucky succeeded in securing a ticket. Great speculation regarding the content of the show gathered a pace with rumours (as turns out unfounded) about the longevity of the famous voice. Ultimately there were those who bemoaned a lack of hits in the show, no tracks from the first four albums were played. But Kate is a multi-dimensional artist, her choice of set was brave, sincere,

a credit to a musician who can never be pigeon-holed. She is quite simplyunique. Outside the venue ticket touts pestered, desperate fans stood in the returns queue and held up signs pleading ‘I want a ticket for tonight’s gig’. A palpable anticipation filled the air. Within, not a single empty seat was spotted in the 3,500 seat auditorium. Barefoot and dressed in black Kate entered, marching in single-file with her backing singers to a standing ovation from the crowd, singing Lily from the 1993 album The Red Shoes. The pure performance of songs including Top of the City, the Hounds of Love and Running Up That Hill confirmed both Kate’s continued vocal prowess and tightness of the band. Without doubt had the concert proceeded in this classic format the grateful crowd would have lapped it up. But that’s not Kate Bush’s style. According to Tim Walker Performance Photographer, the programme notes confirm ‘she visualises not just hears music’. Indeed every music video is a testament to that fact, each tells a story with Kate, a self confessed perfectionist immersed in full character. When percussionist Mino Cinelu stepped out, front of stage swinging a bullroarer above his head we knew the adventure had begun, a conventional performance stepped up a gear. The remainder of the first half was theatrically filled by an audio-visual performance of The Ninth Wave, the second side of The Hounds of Love album. With the inclusion of a spectacular light show, silk waves, costumed ‘fish people’ (the name of Kate’s own record label), videos of Kate reportedly filmed submerged in a flotation tank over three days, the performance dramatically conveyed the despair of a shipwrecked, drowning woman reflecting on her life and the desperation of her situation. Further effects such as a floating buoy and a search helicopter generated by lighting and voice-over provided by Paddy Bush, brother and constant band member, added to the illusion. Also included was a scripted scene conducted in a ‘room’ dragged on to the stage. Her son Bertie and backing singer Bob Harms portraying the father and son of the drowning woman oblivious to the treacherous situation she was in, whilst Kate an

eerie background presence performs Watching You Without Me. The well-behaved audience was hooked, totally engaged with the magnificence unfolding on stage. Kate’s request that audience members watch the show and not use phones to record it seemed to have been completely embraced. Why would anyone have filmed or photographed the show? You’d have missed something beautiful had you taken your eyes off it, even briefly. The second half of the show consisted of A Sky of Honey from the 2005 album Aerial. Kate an acute observer of stillness, of the senses and the natural world, conveyed the serenity of summer, the ‘lovely afternoon’ of the track Prologue. The ultimate experience of mindfulness, of being in the moment, noticing the world around you. Initially serene yet captivating, an ambient journey. On stage a child sized artists’ mannequin expertly animated by Robert Allsop observed and interacted with musicians and actors, a video of birds in flight, a huge sunset, as music motivated by a desire to convey the connection of light and birdsong pulsated. Kate’s voice becoming ever stronger and more emotive, eventually evolving to a climax with Aerial where Kate, with a single feathered wing (perhaps morphing into a bird) is launched upwards as the auditorium is plunged into darkness. The two track single encore consisted of Among Angels from 2011 album 50 Words for Snow, an exquisite pared down performance of Kate singing unaccompanied at the piano and culminated with a magnificent crowd-pleasing crescendo of Cloudbusting. Throughout the show the ever modest Kate frequently acknowledged the support and talent of her band, backing singers and the imagination of the creative team who helped to bring her dream to fruition. In true maternal and humble style she thanked us all for coming and wished us a safe journey home. As a veteran of numerous gigs and theatre shows I can honestly say I’ve never witnessed anything quite like Before the Dawn and doubt I will ever see its like again. Unless of course Kate Bush decides to perform live shows in future, then I’ll be there on-line, ever hopeful, with credit card in hand.

P O T OF THE :

HARRY’S RECORDS

The Coleshill Post

PS U P O P THE OLD

But thanks to the latest innovation taking place at Coleshill Visitor Centre he can now add vinyl record dealer to his extensive list of talents. Harry has set up his pop-up shop there on Saturday mornings where he stocks a selection of records from the widest spectrum of genres you are ever likely to see. We caught up with him on his opening day to try and find out a little bit more about the man behind the music. Some people already know of your legendary record collection. You clearly have a passion for music, where does that passion come from? “I’ve been in to music for as long as I can remember. Apparently when I was a baby my Mom used to play Elvis records to stop me crying and I don’t know how but I’ve always known every single word to The Rubettes ‘Sugar Baby Love’. I remember nearly every weekend as a kid travelling to Wales on family holidays with my Dad playing his Dire Straits, Donovan, ELO and various 60’s cassettes to death. We’d listen to them for hours on end. Mom would always have Simon & Garfunkel, Elvis, The Beatles and even Guns’n’Roses albums on. So it was a good mixture. “When I got to 11 years old I started buying my own music and I absolutely loved it. I managed to get my first summer job at age 13 which paid for my first guitar, a second-hand black and white Fender Squire Stratocaster from a junk shop in Tamworth. It came with an amp that was so dangerous it literally blew up! My dad wouldn’t let me play with it after seeing me nearly electrocute myself and threw it in the skip. So I had to learn on an electric guitar with no amp for a few weeks till I think my Mom took pity on me and bought me a little Peavey amplifier. When I wasn’t buying guitar strings I was buying CDs, but they were expensive back then; about £15 an album which was nearly a day’s work washing dishes.” So where did the love for vinyl come from? What stopped you buying CDs?

“I never really stopped buying CDs but they were prohibitively expensive, even for a 13-year-old with a Sunday job. My Mom used to take my brother Charles and I up to the car boot at Furnace End and people were just throwing records away, or selling them for 10 or 20 pence. Things like Beatles originals, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, T Rex so I just bought loads of them. I had no idea what the music was like on most of them at the time but I bought my first record player there too for £3 and it just sent me on this mad journey that I’m still on.” What was the first Vinyl record you bought? “I think the first one I ever bought was by U2. I probably paid 20p for the Joshua Tree album and that summer I remember I amassed most of the U2 back catalogue, most of the Depeche Mode albums, Motley Crue, Ultravox, mainly 80’s stuff.” Being exposed to all this great music from such an early age, how did the scene affect you once you arrived at university in Liverpool, a City with possibly the richest musical heritage in Britain if not the World? “The big thing about university isn’t the school work, so to speak, but living with different people from around the country and around the world from different backgrounds. In my first year I lived on a floor with people from China, Greece, Africa, Switzerland, Wales, Leeds and even Handsworth. Most of them were into music so you kind of end up listening to everybody else’s tastes. I got turned onto Roxy Music, The Smiths, Bob Dylan, reggae music, electronic stuff and more. But Liverpool is full of music and that period 2004-2007 was a great time for music; The Killers, Razorlight, Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs, Amy Winehouse, Kings of Leon…I saw them all in that first year when most of them were starting out and playing small clubs or the union. Then there was The Coral and The Zutons. They were scouse bands making it big at the time and I spent a couple of evenings drinking with Dave McCabe (singer with The Zutons) in the Caledonia pub which I lived behind for two years a bit later…he was an interesting guy and similarly mad about vinyl.” So what is it that makes you want to sell some of the collection you have spent so long building? “Well I’m only selling records I’ve got multiple copies of from my own collection. The rest is either new records or from other peoples record collections that

I buy. I wanted to open a record shop in Coleshill about 18 months ago but I didn’t go through with it in the end. The costs of doing it looked so daunting especially since the last record shop in Coleshill closed long before I was born. So when the opportunity came along at the Visitor Centre I decided, almost on the spur of the moment, to give it a go. It was now or never. It’s one of those things in life that I always dreamed of doing and, well, there’s never a right time so why not now. Here I am, Harry’s Records.” Have you any experience of running a record shop before? “I used to run a friend’s record shop in Burton while he was away on holiday. It was awesome, I’d open up in a morning and just play records all day, and maybe even sell one or two! So this is the ideal opportunity for me. I work Monday to Friday so the shop is a great thing to do on a Saturday.” What kind of records can people expect to find when they pop in on a Saturday? “I’ve got everything from 80s Goth, Soul, Funk, Blues, Rock ‘n’ Roll, some terrible 70’s and 80’s pop and new LPs by The Killers, Radiohead etc. The stock is quite eclectic and most people find something to their taste. It’s been good to see such a wide range of customers from teenagers to pensioners, male and female.” How easy has it been to rent your pop-up shop here in the Old Market Hall and what advice would you give to anyone maybe thinking of taking the same route? “The pop-up shop is literally that, a stall you can set up in the morning and take apart at night. There are no business rates, lease agreements or red tape. Simply turn up and sell. And being in such a prominent place that everybody knows, you can virtually guarantee some custom from those passing through the centre.” The concept definitely works, on his first day Harry did a brisk trade and sold 23 LPs which far surpassed his own expectations. The Visitor Centre is fast becoming a focal point for Coleshill and with the brilliant success of retailers like Harry’s Records and previously KP Fruit & Veg the list of stall holders is bound to increase. Get down to Church Hill and see exactly what is going on for yourself. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Thom Hodkinson

Thom on Film: From Boy to Man

Even a dancing dog found it’s way into the UK Box Office Top 10! But in amongst these big money blockbusters & typical school-holiday distractions lay a very unique, very original film that had gotten a lot of people talking. “Boyhood” is a simple tale about a young Texan and the typical journey he takes from being a child to eventually taking on the big scary outside world. That may not sound as interesting as intelligent Apes waging war against Mankind, but the big USP on this feature is that filming started in 2002 when lead actor Ellar Coltrane was only 6 years-old and didn’t fully wrap until last Autumn, a staggering 11 years later. As Coltrane the actor grows each year, so does his character Mason. Every stupid haircut, every questionable piercing and beard attempt is laid

out for all to see, giving the audience a very realistic view into what it’s like to be Young in the Modern World. And this is no documentary, just a very well crafted script from Richard Linklater, creator of “Dazed & Confused” and the highly-regarded “Before Trilogy”. Linklater gambled big with this project, knowing it’d either be a resounding failure or a massive success. And in my humble opinion, I am glad to believe that it’s the latter of the two. It’s such a rare and amazing concept (and one that I’ve always wondered whether or not it would work) to take the same cast 1 or 2 weeks a year, bring them to Texas and film a series of short films over 11 or so years. Then, rather than release them all bit-by-bit, he edited them together and made a serious contender for Film of the Year. What helps this film is the dated, but brilliant Pop Culture references. The soundtrack is very close to perfect, showcasing some of the most popular songs since the turn of the millennium, featuring Coldplay, The Hives, Vampire Weekend, Gnarls Barkley, Arcade Fire and more. I was amazed to hear “Somebody that you used to know” by Gotye and felt like I was transported back to a time where that wasn’t on every radio station every hour for about 12 months

solid. References to “High School Musical” and discussions on whether or not there would ever be a new Star Wars movie rings serious nostalgia alarm bells within me like no other film ever has. Scene’s featuring the characters campaigning for Barack Obama’s inaugural presidential term and debates over the Iraq & Afghanistan wars are also expertly used to age the project. The most impressive thing about this film has to be the commitment involved, not just by the Director or by the Lead Actor, but by all of the cast and crew involved. It’s not just Mason that grows before our very eyes,

but it’s all of the characters, including Richard Linklater’s daughter Lorelei who begged her father for a role in one of his films as a child and then grew tired of performing mid-way through the project and asked to be killed off. The fact that each member of the cast gave such an amazing amount of time to such a risky idea is admirable, and it’s a joy to watch minor characters come in and out of Mason’s life and to see how they have changed and grown over time. This is a very rare and wonderful cinema experience that took me totally by surprise, perhaps the first Oscar-wor-

thy feature of the year. Sadly no longer in theatres, the DVD & Blu-Ray are set for UK release on November 10th. I’ve already pre-ordered my copy and I heavily suggest that you all do the same Well, Richard Linklater may have taken 12 years to make a movie, but we here at The Post only have until December to get your opinions on the Greatest Films ever made. You can send your thoughts via e-mail (Editor@ thecoleshillpost.co.uk OR Thomhodkinson@hotmail.co.uk ), Via Twitter (@ColeshillPost OR @thomhodkinson) OR via the handy voting form in this very paper.

Motoring

The Coleshill Post

Extending the life of your car really isn’t that difficult THIS month we are going to go through a few things that you will be able to do yourself or bring to us that will extend the life of your car and keep those pesky MOT testers from killing your car off. Now this isn't a guarantee for you to have a 100% working car for the rest of your life but it will advise you on how to prevent or stall common problems from happening. First off is rust, the killer of most classic cars and yours if you're not careful. Any car touching eight years

and over can be susceptible to this slow killer. Small city cars are usually the first to fall with the City Rover and Ford KA needing sills and floor pans within the ten year mark. Now these are built on a budget so the thickness and how well the metal is treated isn't high on the list of priorities but in some cases they don't have the excuse alone to fall on, sometimes it's just a really bad design. If you have a look at the rear quarter of a Fiat Punto, you will see a small raised disc of metal under the sill that you are supposed to jack the car up on. Now other

cars have this and are connected to strengthened parts of the chassis but Fiat just placed it on the floor pan. This bends and weakens the metal and over time the rust will devour the whole area. Now this is quite bad but as the seat belt mountings are in the same place you could find yourself hurtling towards a windscreen with a fist sized lump of metal on route ironically towards your head with one end of your seatbelt connected to it. Now other than changing your car for a brand new one every three years, rust will form and grow but a treatment called Waxoyl will stop existing rust from spreading and new rust forming. No longer will you just have to wait for the inevitable to happen and have the car patched up constantly till it's to far gone and have it scrapped. your whole car with Waxoyl. Right now I have save your car from rotting away around you let's get your engine and gearbox on the right track. The first in line is up to date servicing. Changing the oil and filter often will prolong the life of your engine especially when using good quality oil. Do not go into Asda and buy there own branded oil. It's not the same oil and people will snigger at you in the till queues. With more and more emissions related components like EGR's, Particulate filters and even turbo's it is essential to keep maintenance up and to a high standard otherwise these rather expensive components will clog up and fail, costing you a fortune. Now regular servicing is obvious but there are other products out there that help aid your cars longevity from oil flushes that would clean up oil channels that have clogged up from excessive heat, for example in a turbo the heat

This is a fun time of the year for many people with lots of exciting celebrations ahead. Bonfire night can be great fun for us but can be a distressing time for our dogs. In fact over 45 per cent of our canine friends exhibit signs of distress during the firework season. Have you ever wondered what it must be like for your dog? - we understand the flashing lights, strange smells, whistling sounds and loud bangs but they have no idea what is happening. Firstly, if you have a dog that is particularly prone to becoming distressed, always seek the advice of your vet. You will notice that your

@ColeshillPost The Coleshill Post

I am writing with my concerns about a group calling itself Coleshill Online. I remember reading about this group in one of your issues earlier this year. It was a community group “supporting residents and businesses” that was non-political and funded by the people of Coleshill. It was disappointing the to read on the Internet the comments from Coleshill Online constantly promoting the Conservative Party and Councillor Peter Fowler. In fact the group seems to do little else than relay party political statements and attacks on other groups from the Conservative Party. Can I ask that you put right your earlier article stating this group was non-political and for residents and businesses? Can I also ask is it right that a group saying it is being funded by Coleshill people behaves in such a manner? Michael Williams

Dear Editor, I have noticed that the street lights around the Junction 4 island of the M6 are left on throughout the day. Is there a reason for this? Considering that we have to suffer complete darkness after midnight so that the Council can save money, why on earth are they burning money on lights during day light hours where nobody lives. This seems like complete and utter madness. I am sure the people of Coleshill would like a response from the Council on this one, could you please find out who is responsible for street lights and ask them to explain themselves. Yours Bob (Coleshill)

Comment of the Month..... Dear editor, There’s been some odd goings on in Coleshill of late. Some of you may be aware that a new group has formed stating that it wishes to bring back the carnival in Coleshill in summer 2015. I noticed the announcement on social media where “B46Carnival”, clearly a take-off of the B46 community groups on facebook, had announced it’s intentions to revive the carnival. The carnival committee asked for volunteers yet when Coleshill’s youngest councillor instantly offered his services the response on Twitter was that the committee was full. Indeed others have also publicly offered their services yet the committee is “full”. Even stranger is that the committee don’t

seem to want to reveal themselves. The B46Carnival account on Twitter has so far been asked on at least three occasions who is on the committee yet with no response. Is it a committee of ghosts? One hopes the reason the committee have been so secretive is not because they don’t want a coalition of Coleshill groups, volunteers and indeed councillors. It would be very sad if the B46Carnival committee turned out to have many of the same faces as, say, the Coleshill in Bloom committee and the reason for it being “full” was that one political party wanted to exploit a carnival for its own ends, especially with local elections just months away. Understanding Reflexology

The aid of reflexology is the restoration of a state of equilibrium and balance within the body. If a person is to be healthy, all systems of the body must work together in harmony. If any part is out of alignment, other parts suffer as a consequence. The feet have a special relationship with the body: there are 7,200 nerve endings present in the feet that Interconnect with every part of the body. The Coleshill Post

Richard Woodhall giving a presentation at the B46 Event held at this companies new premises.

Andrew Hope from Work Place Pensions Online

On Wednesday 10th September over 30 local businesses attended the monthly Business46 networking event. The highly successful breakfast event was held at Woodall Transport Group’s (WTG) new Gorsey Lane premises in Coleshill. The morning had a great buzz, with lots of pro-active networking. Attendees also had a tour of the impressive new site. Richard Woodall, Managing Director of Woodall Transport Group (WTG) welcomed B46 attendees and explained the history of WTG, which is over 70 years old. WTG traded for many years from Station Road, Coleshill and moved to their prestigious new premises in January 2014. The move enabled WTG to grow and add more logistics services to their portfolio including new initiatives

such as Supply Chain-Lite and Staging Post. Supply Chain-Lite was created after WTG identified a gap in the market to provide SME importers and distributors with a single provider of integrated logistics, with the support and services normally associated with a major transport business. Staging Post is WTG’s new, quick response solution for goods held near to customers or store locations and delivered on demand. The guest speaker at this month’s Business46 event was Karen Nicholls of Roar Marketing Limited. Karen is a registered and approved GrowthAccelerator Growth Coach. GrowthAccelerator is a Government funded programme that exclusively targets high growth businesses who want to enter their next growth phase and have the potential and determination to get there. Karen worked with WTG as their

Growth Coach and presented them as a case study. Richard Woodall highly recommended Growth Accelerator to B46 attendees. The GrowthAccelerator Area Manager for Coventry & Warwickshire, Nigel Knapp, also attended and is the point of contact for any local business wishing to find out more about GrowthAccelerator Nigel. Knapp@peraconsulting.com or visit www.growthaccelerator.com If you own or work in a business linked to the B46 postcode, why not come to an event? Speakers and locations vary, ensuring there is always something relevant to attendees. Everyone is guaranteed a warm and friendly welcome. RGN CASE STUDY: Hectic Media Ltd

@ColeshillPost

RGN vital to success of hyper-local newspaper publisher

The Coleshill Post

What is RGN?

THE Warwickshire Rural Growth Network provides free business support to businesses and individuals looking to start their own business, in rural Warwickshire.

Warwickshire County Council has been selected by DEFRA, as one of five counties in England to run this new pilot business support programme focusing on rural areas. You will be given a dedicated business coach, who will work with you to develop a bespoke action plan, to launch a new business or kick start business growth. You and your business coach will work through your journey, to achieve your goals. To discuss this opportunity further, please do contact us on either 07768 390148 or 07920 563781.

Hectic Media Ltd is a media business with a difference, whose aim is to provide quality, hyper local news and publications across North Warwickshire.

Hyperlocal coverage involves providing information oriented around a well-defined community with its key focus directed toward the concerns of its residents Hectic Media Ltd’s unique approach of becoming involved with the local community, to fully understand political, cultural and business communities has given the business a unique perspective on local news and relevant information. In return, Hectic Media’s passion for delivering hyperlocal news has supported local community groups and local businesses to grow and effectively communicate their messages. Michael Moore and Richard Harwood started the business in early 2013 with the first edition of The Coleshill Post launching the business in June 2013. At that time the business employed 3 members of staff

and this truly was a new beginning. It became apparent to Michael and Richard that this business was growing and that they needed outside support. Michael contacted Warwickshire Rural Growth Network in November 2013 and met with business coach Rita Booth from Pera Consulting (UK) Ltd, to discuss how one-to-one coaching may help this business, as well as how the business may introduce other products to further enhance communications across hyperlocal communities. Michael, Richard and Rita explored ways in which this business may develop the current business model to successfully deliver publications to other towns across North Warwickshire, as well as how to manage a growing business. Through one-to-one coaching sessions, Michael, Richard and Rita have worked closely together in developing an effective business model that has included growing the team, developing and embedding operational pro-

cesses and managing cash flow during a time of change and growth. Additionally, Rita has worked with Michael and Richard to develop their business and leadership skills in managing the business at a strategic level, as well as creating a sustainable future. Since coaching began in November 2013, Hectic Media Ltd has recently launched a further 3 products, as well as launching the successful business model into Atherstone. Hectic Media Ltd now manages and delivers 4 products; which are The Coleshill Post; The Coleshill Past; The Atherstone Post and digital marketing. Richard Harwood commented: “Setting up a new business is never easy. There are so many things to consider which is why good advice is so important. When we first launched the Coleshill Post we had no idea just how successful it would be. We found ourselves growing at an astonishing rate and with that growth came the need to employ staff. It was at this point that we had to admit we needed help. We had seen leaflets at The Hub, in Coleshill Town Hall, advertising the

services of RGN and within days of calling them Rita was assigned to us. Over the course of our free 15 hours of advice Rita had helped us to turn the business around. Her knowledge and experience has proved to be invaluable and we continue to consult her to this day. On many occasions when things get tough, which they always will in business, Rita has been right there on the end of the phone. It is easy to overlook the obvious when you are so involved in a busy, expanding company, having Rita to consult has been a godsend. She has taught us to to stop, take a step back and review each situation, with her impartial guidance we have learned so much. We first published the Coleshill Post in July 2013, now nearly 18 months later we have grown our portfolio to include three printed titles and our continually developing digital products. Without Rita none of this would have been possible. We honestly cannot thank her enough.” If you think you could benefit from help and advice from RGN please get in touch by calling 07768 390148 or 07920 563781.

Global rise in food Industry difficulty allergy sufferers prompts CWRT to causes concern for launch ‘Unsecured food businesses Food Allergies are an increasing problem, not just in the UK but all over the world more and more people are suffering after consuming food, sometimes with life threatening allergic reactions. In the UK alone Hospital admissions for food allergies have increased by 500% since 1990 (Gupta 2007) And 10 people unfortunately die each year as a result of food-induced anaphylaxis in the UK. So you can see, being able to make an informed choice which buying and eating out is a great benefit. As a consumer you have a right to eat food which is safe. When the new Food Information Regulations 2014 rules come in on the 13th December, a food business will have a legal

responsibility to provide the correct allergen information about the ingredients that is in the food they provide, make or serve. For a food business owner, this could be a huge challenge as food business will be required to provide information for items on their menu that contains any of the 14 allergens. This allergen information can be provided by either listing them clearly in a noticeable place such as the menu or in a folder. If it is not provided upfront, you will need to signpost to where the information can be found, either written down in an menu/ingredient information pack or having a member of staff on duty who knows exactly what ingredients are being used. Many businesses prefer to have the information

in an easy to read information pack which all staff have access to. The 14 allergen ingredients which are including in the new regulations include, Peanuts, Nuts, Milk, Eggs, Gluten, Fish, Molluscs, Crustaceans, Soya, Sesame, Mustard, Celery, Lupin and Sulphites. Ignorance will not be an excuse. This new regulation has been in the pipeline for 3 years so local authorities will expect food businesses to be ready by 13th December. Those not ready by the 13th December could be prosecuted. Food and Hygiene Ltd are working closely with local businesses to make sure they are compliant in time for the December deadline and providing ongoing support to make North Warwickshire as safe place to eat.

Tradesman Loan’ The ‘Unsecured Tradesman Loan’ has been launched by CWRT in response to the recent KPMG report on the difficulty that the construction industry faces in raising finance from their bank.

Funded by the government and the European Regional Development Fund, the ‘Unsecured Tradesman Loan’ offers local businesses loans from £10,000 to £15,000, loans which can be used for most purposes including working capital, purchase of equipment, recruitment of staff, specialised training courses.Loan terms of one to three years. No administration fees. No early termination fees, fixed interest rates of between 11.5% to 16.5% (reflecting level of risk) and a rebate equivalent to a 1% reduction in the interest rate if payments are made on time. Mike Musson, Chief Executive of CWRT,

comments ‘CWRT is always striving to see how it can support Coventry & Warwickshire businesses. Too many local businesses are compelled to use their credit cards or other high cost forms of finance. Unlike most high street banks our lending is not credit scored by a computer but is based upon a viable business plan, cash flow projections and personal contact. Our application process is simple and straight forward’. Because the amount of loan funding available is limited and has to be used up by December 2014, loans will be offered on a ‘first come, first served basis’. Due to the time needed to process the loan application before December 2014 the deadline for applications is 5pm Friday 7th November 2014. For more information, call CWRT’s team on 02476 551 777 or email us at enquiries@ cwrt.uk.com.

ing able to use it for lessons and leisure Mr Adam Gray Subject Leader of PE commented “this is a fantastic oppor-

tunity for our students to now study and participate in sport in a state of the art facility which will also enhance the curriculum and provision for all”.

Help required for Community Garden at The Coleshill School The Technology department at The Coleshill School are in the first stages of a project to create an outdoor classroom and agricultural garden.

By Miss Sparkes Teacher of Business Studies and ICT

Six students from The Coleshill School picked up the gauntlet thrown down by Aston University to participate in the Rolls Royce Enterprise Challenge. The challenge required students to make a prototype of their chosen product with the few resources at their disposal. Once a prototype was made, they were required to pitch it to a group of buyers and use their negotiating skills in order to fix a selling price; the exact amount of goods then had to be delivered to the buyer within a set amount of time. This enterprise challenge showcased the

students’ abilities to work well as a team under time pressure and to calculate accurately costs and revenues whilst designing an innovative product and marketing it to professionals. Students demonstrated the ability to work as a team and communicate effectively in order to facilitate the process of identifying, developing and pitching an entrepreneurial idea. The Coleshill School came third out of thirty teams with a total profit of £622. This is a fantastic achievement for the school and most importantly for the following students: Harry Green, Hannah Smyth, Amy Bourne, Luke Reynolds, Jordan Thomas, Olivia Worringham. Well done all.

We set our students the challenge as an inter house competition to design this garden with the following criteria: The garden must have tables and a seating area for up to 50 people, a shelter, a white board, a herb/vegetable section, a greenhouse, decorated walls, a planting area, a sensory area, a compost zone and a section for recycling. Our Competition winner for the Garden design was Oscar Jackson in year 7 Greville 9 Well Done ! It was a close decision but special commendation must also go to: Ellie Wheddon year 7 Dudley 5, Gabriel Morgan year 7 Beauchamp 1, Jessica Duffy year 7, Newburgh 7, Charlotte Vervoort, year 7 Beauchamp 7 and Luca Robson year 7 Beauchamp 8 A big thank you goes to Ellie Wheddon year 7 in Dudley 5

and Jonathon Ferro year 9 Beauchamp 4 who took photographs of the garden areas to be transformed. The garden will be used for members of the community students and parents and friends of the school. we plan to turn the currently unloved space into an outdoor learning environment with items such as a wall mural based on Coleshill, a vegetable patch, fruit trees, a pond, herb garden, BBQ and even chickens. The produce will be used within Technology catering lessons

and for outside learning around school with the focus being on community spirit and being a green school. We need your help. If you are able to help in any way by providing a hand, materials, garden supplies or even project advice . Should you have any items spare for planting/pots/planters chicken runs, excess slabs bricks etc please contact Miss Bell, Subject Leader of Design Technology at bell.y@thecoleshillschool.com or by contacting The Coleshill School on 01675 462435

I’ll End Mckenzie’s Knockout Run Says Askin BLACKPOOL cruiserweight star Matty Askin has promised to end Ovill McKenzie’s KO run when they clash at the Liverpool Echo Arena on Saturday 25th October. Askin, the current English champion, challenges dynamite-punching McKenzie for his British and Commonwealth titles on the title-stacked show, headlined by Paul Butler’s record breaking challenge for the IBF World Super-Flyweight title against Zolani Tete. The 25-year-old steps up to his biggest challenge yet against McKenzie who’s had a career resurgence since moving up to cruiserweight from light-heavy, with stunning knockout wins over Tony Conquest and Jon-Lewis Dickinson in his last two fights. But Askin, who’s stopped ten of his 17 wins, is relishing the test and says he can raise his game to another level to claim the titles. “I can’t take nothing away from McKenzie, he’s a tremendous warrior and I’m going to have to produce one hell of a performance to beat him, but I know I can do it,” Said Askin. “McKenzie’s had great career at light-heavyweight with wars against Enzo Maccarinelli and Tony Bellew and recently he’s found a new lease of life at cruiserweight with knockouts of Conquest and Dickinson, now it’s my time for me to prove that I’m the best,” “I’ve waited for the opportunity to fight for the British and Common-

wealth titles for a long time and now I’ve got it so it’s down to me to take it to McKenzie and rip the titles from him,” “I need the big test to push me to the next level and McKenzie will make me do that. It’s going to be an exciting fight for the fans and with so many other great fights on the show, I’ll be looking to make my mark with a top performance.” Tete v Butler headlines the show, plus Liam Smith challenging for the Vacant IBF Intercontinental Light-Middleweight Championship; Derry Mathews faces Adam Dingsdale for the Vacant WBA Continental Lightweight Championship; Oville McKenzie defends his British and Commonwealth Cruiserweight titles against Matty Askin; Kevin Satchell challenges European Flyweight Champion Valery Yanchy for his title, and Tom Stalker takes on Chris Jenkins in an Eliminator for the British Light-Welterweight Championship. A quality packed undercard features undefeated talent Chris Eubank Jnr, Jack Catterall, Steven Lewis, Michael Gomez Jnr, Matty Fagan, and the pro debuts of Michael Joynson and Mason Cartright. Tickets priced at £40, £50, £75, £100 and £150 are available from the Liverpool Echo Arena Box Office on 0844 8000 400 or www.echoarena. com Watch live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky 437/HD 490, Virgin 546 and Talk Talk 525). JOSHUA SENDS POWER THREAT TO HEAVYWEIGHT RIVALS

Olympic star dispatches Bakhtov in two rounds Anthony Joshua MBE claimed his first professional title on Saturday 11th October with a brutal second round KO of Denis Bakhtov – and chillingly warned his Heavyweight rivals: ‘My power is only going to grow.’

The Olympic gold medal hero blasted Bakhtov out of the equation in just five ruthless minutes in east London, back in the venue of his debut last October. Joshua signalled his intent in the opening round, staggering the Russian with a fierce right counter that led to the 24 year old hunting a fourth first-round stoppage. Bakhtov, in his 48th pro fight, survived to hear the bell but Joshua’s assault began in earnest at the beginning of the second stanza and referee Ian John Lewis had seen

enough after two minutes to make it nine KOs in nine fights for Joshua, and his first pro belt in the bag in the form of the WBC International strap. “I thought he was going to be taking me five or six rounds but it's going well and I'm putting the work in at the gym and it's paying off on fight night,” said Joshua. “I think it's my accuracy really more than the power, I haven't been doing much strength work recently because I have been in the gym so much, so I think speed and accuracy is getting me through right now. “He came out game and as a fighter you can tell someone wants to have a go, he tried to slip in a left hook and I adjusted and thought 'OK, this is what you are bringing to the table' - I was back at The O2 and in London for the first time in a while so the adrenaline was pump-

ing.” Joshua, who turns 25 on Wednesday, now focusses his attentions on Michael Sprott whom he faces at the sold-out Echo Arena in Liverpool on November 22 live on Sky Sports Box Office – where victory over the former British champion and European title challenger will complete ‘phase one’ of his plans. “That fight will complete a phase in my mind,” said Joshua. “People have been saying since my second fight 'he needs to stop fighting tin cans' and all that, it takes time though and if I keep beating people then I am going to move up, so if I beat Michael then I am sure we'll be stepping up in 2015. We've done Bakhtov and got the WBC International belt and now we're looking at Sprott, so by the end of 2015 it will be interesting to see where we are.”

Matthew Macklin will face Jorge Sebastian Heiland for the WBC International Middleweight title in an official World title eliminator at The 3 Arena in Dublin on November 15, live on Sky Sports. Macklin and Heiland were set to meet in August but the show was cancelled following an injury to Macklin’s then-trainer Jamie Moore. Macklin dusted off the cobwebs in Germany a fortnight ago with his first action since

December and can take a huge step towards facing the Puerto Rican legend and WBC champion Miguel Cotto if he can see off Heiland, the 27 year old who is ranked at number four with the WBC and won the WBC International title in November with a fifth round KO of Billi Godoy in his native Argentina. There’s a great supporting cast on a packed bill in Dublin, as bitter Middleweight rivals Spike O’Sullivan and Anthony Fitzgerald finally get their hands on each other, Commonwealth Super

Flyweight champion Kal Yafai defends his title against Luke Wilton and Michael Sweeney and Ian Tims meet again for the Irish Cruiserweight title. Dubliners Luke Keeler, Patrick Hyland and Declan Geraghty are all in action along with Stourbridge’s Sam Eggington, and promoter Eddie Hearn will announce the full card at a press conference at midday at the Three Arena next Tuesday. Dereck Chisora promised to KO heavyweight rival Tyson Fury once and for all when they clash at the ExCeL London on Saturday 29th November, but Fury had no reply!

The Manchester giant turned up at today’s head-to-head press conference with tape strapped over his mouth and “BBBofC?????” written on it in reference to his £15,000 fine by the Board for misconduct at a previous press conference with Chisora - and vowed to stay silent until fight night. Chisora and Fury clash with the European, Vacant British and Eliminator for the WBO World Championship all on the line in the biggest all-British heavyweight clash in recent years, live and exclusive on BoxNation. So for the first time ever at a press conference the volatile Fury didn’t say a single word and it was left to his uncle and trainer Peter to do all the talking. “The Board wanted us to tone it down so here's Tyson - the Board dummy.' Said Peter. Fury did gesture that he’d knockout Chisora in two rounds, though, and later stripped off to reveal a wellhoned body showing that he’s fight ready with nearly two months to go. Chisora said, “I will knockout him, plain and simple,” “I’m not saying what round, all I’m saying is he’s going to be knocked out,” “Bring on November 29th, I’ll show everyone what I would have done to him in July. I’ll be in fantastic shape come fight night and he’s looking in good shape himself so the better man will win and that will be me.” Tickets, priced at £40, £50, £75, £100, £200 and £300, are available on the Eventim Ticket Hotline on 0844 249 1000 or www.eventim.co.uk BoxNation will televise live and exclusive on Sky 437/HD 490, Virgin 546 and Talk Talk 525. Book ‘Em Dano

DERBY DAY, the two dates in every football purist’s season ingrained on the brain, guaranteed to get the blood pumping from the moment you wake.

Regardless of which part the country you reside, and whether it be in the local down the road, the office or the warehouse, the likelihood is that you’ve spent the week leading up to this game taking ‘the banter’ from friends, family and workmates alike who’s footballing DNA has unfortunately for them, lead them to the wrong side of the fence. Once the day is upon you, at the ground, in your living room or looking up at a 60inch screen in the local, one constant is again guaranteed – Tensions are high!! These are great days, days where a pure

passion for the game is stripped down to it’s very core, the form book is torn up and thrown out of the window and you expect your team to find that extra 10%, to put their heart and soul into the performance of their lives. With this in mind, let’s now cast our minds back a few weeks to the North London Derby with Nacer Chadli slotting home the opener, and in turn silencing every office based and fork lift driving Gooner throughout the land, …whilst sending every Spurs fan into a frenzy and the away allocation at The Emirates into absolute Fever Pitch. On the field of play however, referee Michael Oliver was busy booking Chadli in the aftermath of the goal celebrations. Chadli’s crime wasn’t to run the full

length of the pitch Adebayor esq, sliding to his knee’s to berate the Arsenal faithful, nor was it to play the flute in Gazza fashion potentially inciting riot’s across a small country. No, Chadli had the audacity to cup his ear. ‘Eargate’ wasn’t a booking for anyone that loves the beautiful game and has had those derby day butterflies. The F.A may have to run a tight ship where discipline is concerned, everybody understands that, but football’s very foundation - 11 committed players on a pitch and a fan base on tenterhooks is epitomized by derby day when giving that extra 10% is everything and cupping your ear to the crowd means absolutely nothing. Get on the tasty 5/6 for 4 or more yellow cards in the upcoming Manchester derby. (RED’S COUNT AS 2) 02/11/14 1.30pm kick off

As the cricket season draws to a close and the football season begins; it’s about time to reflect on the achievements of the local cricketing teams.

textbook off-break bowling performance all season long; his ability to tie batsmen down at an end, producing many maiden over’s proved too much for most batsmen. His terrific bowling performances helped him pick up 25 first team league wickets at an average of 16.2. In addition to 1st team success, the Saturday 2nds also had a majorly successful season after reaching 200 points for the first time in five years. Mark Smith took over the reigns as captain and was extremely reliant on opening bowler Daniel Satchwell who picked up 28 wickets at an average of 19. Likewise, Coleshill CC’s 1st team had

a reasonably good year after finishing mid-table in division 1 of the Warwickshire Cricket Leagues. Kevin Crotty performed excellently for the ones as he took 39 league wickets at an average of 24. Unfortunately, the Coleshill 2nd XI couldn’t match the success of the other local teams as they were relegated from the Premier division in the Warwickshire cricket leagues. Despite their struggles throughout the season, Akmal Bashir provided a valiant effort in an attempt to guide Coleshill to survival. Unluckily, his impressive 25 wickets at an average 0f 9.92 couldn’t quite save the 2nds. Hopefully next year the Coleshill 2nd XI will begin their fight for promotion; ensuring they return to the most competitive division possible.

Fickle breezes at Shustoke Despite very light breezes, Shustoke Sailing Club managed to hold two important events in its programme over the last weekend of September.

As well as the normal club races on Saturday 27th, we held the second Terry Booth Trophy event for junior members of the club. Terry Booth was a founder member of the club who was a great supporter of junior sailors. From Coleshill, he was a popular member of the club; his humour and friendly approach are sadly missed. Marie, his widow, presented the club with a magnificent trophy which is presented annually to the overall winner of the race. The competitors were split into two fleets, the Silver and Gold. The Silver fleet is for juniors who have successfully completed their training but who have, as yet, limited experience of racing. The Gold fleet is for more advanced sailors many of whom race regularly alongside the senior members of the club. In the Silver fleet, George Marlow took an early lead sailing his Olympic themed

SAILING SAILING Optimist dinghy (named ‘Champagne’) closely followed by new member Drew sailing a club owned Topper dinghy. George just managed to beat Drew on corrected time to take the title in the Silver fleet. The Gold flet was also a handicap event with a variety of high performance boats taking part. Ryan and Calum Padro won the event for the 2nd year in succession, sailing a Comet Trio with Rory Bush and James Griffiths in their Lark dinghy finishing 2nd. Eve Webley sailed her Laser into 3rd place. The event was generously sponsored by the Coleshill branch of Morrison’s Supermarket. They provided gift vouchers which were presented to 2 sailors who had demonstrated particular skill and endeavour on the day. On the Sunday we held an open meeting for two of the single handed classes sailed at Shustoke, the Olympic Laser

and the Phantom, Six Phantoms took part, all from the home club. This boat is designed for the heavier sailor and it may well be that the forecast of very light winds put off potential visitors from other clubs. The Laser fleet attracted a total of 12 boats, evenly split between visitors and home sailors. Despite the very light winds we managed to hold three races for each fleet. Jim Hopton took the trophy for the Phantom fleet, with Roger Hopper second and Ann Biglin (punching well above her weight).in third place. The top three places in the Laser fleet were taken by our visitors with Rob Lennox from Barnt Green S C winning with three first places. He was followed by James Cuxon from Earlswood and Alexander Homer from Midland S C in second and third places respectively. Shustoke Sailing Club is a recognised RYA training centre and welcomes new members. Training courses and open days are held throughout the year.. Why not drop in and say hello?

Warm welcome for Old Salts youngsters IT was a welcome return to Watton Lane for the combined under 12s and 11s team at Old Salts Rugby Club. Saturday 13th September Coleshill Town 1 v 2 Barwell FA CUP

Coleshill played to the camera’s as Midlands Today came to Town and in the first 45 minutes they were excellent and took the lead through Jonathan Jones. Barwell who are two levels above Coleshill in the non-league pyramid, showed their experience in the second half scoring twice.

Saturday 20th September Coleshill Town 2 v 2 Westfields (Hereford)

After the big FA Cup game Coleshill were back to league action and were second best for most of the game! Westfields lead with one minute on the clock but Luke Edwards scored with a diving header and then Shane Benjamin levelled the scores from the penalty spot. Town could have gone on to win the game but that would have been an injustice for a very good visiting team.

Saturday 27th September Walsall Wood 1 v 2 Coleshill Town

Coleshill were 1-0 down at half time but a storming second half saw them take the points, Shane Benjamin and Chris Lloyd with the goals.

Saturday 4th October Causeway United 0 v 3 Coleshill Town

Coleshill travelled to the Black Country and gave the home team a lesson in finishing. Dean Rathbone, Simeon Cobourne and Shane Benjamin the scorers.

Wednesday 8th October Tipton Town 0 v 4 Coleshill Town

Seven goals in a week against a Black Country team and non conceded! Matt Brown, Shane Benjamin, Simeon Cobourne and Chris Lloyd with the goals.

Saturday 11th October Coleshill Town 4 v 1 Shepshed Dynamo

Coleshill didn’t play that well, but defended resolutely and made the most of the chances that came their way. Danny Douglas and Shane Benjamin from the penalty spot put Town 2-0 up by half time. Dynamo hit back with a 40 yard strike but a double by 18 year old Simeon Cobourne late on sealed the points.

This season has been an especially pleasing one for all involved at Nether Whitacre cricket club. Captain of the 1st team, Matthew Lawrence led the ‘Mighty Ducks’ to promotion, following an exceptional seasons worth of all round cricket. Everything is prepared fresh to order, giving the most impressive, authentic Bangladeshi/Indian cuisine. Set in five acres of beautiful english countryside on Blackgreaves Lane, Lea Marston, Pavilion is a truly unique Indian dining experience.
