Claire & David Wright worship at St Peter and St Paul's Church, Water Orton, and on Sunday 10th April, 2016 they renewed their Marriage vows within the context of the Holy Communion Service. Everyone was delighted to be part of the occasion; they were married 11 years ago last January, at Lichfield. No doubt it was a little colder then. They are pictured with Rev. Paul Tullett the Vicar of St Peter & St Paul's the Parish Church of Water Orton.

There is a long and unbroken tradition in our country of celebrating Royal jubilees, weddings, coronations and special birthdays with the lighting of beacons – on top of mountains, churches and castle battlements, on town and village greens, farms, country parks and estates, and along the beaches surrounding our shores.

The last major national beacon celebration was on Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on 4th June 2012. On Thursday 21st April 2016, beacons were lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories in celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday. More than 255 local communities, including town and parish councils, local authorities, youth groups and organisations such as the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution, the Crown Estate, Windsor, Historic Houses Association, English Heritage, National Trust, Country Land and Business Association, Trinity House, the Royal Air Force, National Association of Local Councils, Local Government Association, Once Voice Wales, National Association of Civic Officers and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities agreed to take part. Coleshill Town Council wished to participate by lighting a beacon, joining us in uniting the nation in common celebration of this important milestone in The Queen’s life. The idea came from The National Pageantmaster Bruno Peek LVO OBE OPR and our Town Councillors voted in favour of celebrating this wonderful occasion.

100’s Turn out to celebrate Queens milestone On Thursday 21st April 2016 hundreds of As well as the beacon itself there were refreshments Coleshillians came to celebrate the Queen’s from Coleshill WI, a hog roast, stalls for the Scouts, 90th Birthday at Coleshill Town Council’s Carnival Committee, Youth Council, Boy’s and Girl’s Brigade, and Coleshill Churches Together. Bonfire Beacon Celebration.

The Mayor of Coleshill, Cllr. Kirsteen Wootton had the honour of lighting the beacon for Coleshill after warming up the crowd with readings of the children’s poetry competition winners and her own speech for the occasion. The Mayor was accompanied by her Sergeant at Arms Simon Toon who provided a reading from Prince Charles.

There was entertainment provided by performances from Coleshill Town Band and readings from Reverend Nick Parker, Father Kevin Kavanagh, Alan Cameron and Reverend Ken Howcroft. The atmosphere was electric, thank you to everyone who volunteered and participated in this event for making it such a success.

see off travellers News Ln Local www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk

Three Coleshill Councillors spent 5 hours negotiating with members of the travelling community to ensure their town's park didn't become a traveller site.

On Tuesday 29th March a number of members of the travelling community moved on to the Coleshill Memorial Park. The landowners, Coleshill Town Council, reacted within hours to serve notices for them to quit the land. A decision was also made to close the main gates to limit further access to the area. During the evening, further vehicles attempted to enter the park but became stuck in the muddy field. Councillors Adam Farrell, Dominic Ferro

and Mark Jones spent 5 hours alongside Warwickshire Police negotiating with the travellers to move off the site. At 11pm on Tuesday evening, just 9 hours after entering the park, the travellers left the site and the gates were locked behind them. The 5 hour negotiation involved a number of Police officers, 5 Police cars, a recovery truck and a tractor but the outcome means history has been made with travellers leaving the site on the same day that they arrived. Removing the need to go to court has saved thousands and the Council will now focus its efforts on repairing the land and increasing security around the area.

Coleshill W.I. April meeting Institute Wi Women’s www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk We stood in memory of our popular and longstanding member Mina Carter who died last month and sent 102nd birthday wishes to another former member Ena Rawlinson who is now living at Orchard Blythe Care Home.

Former committee member Phyllis Tilley treated us to slices of rich fruit cake to celebrate her and husband Ray's Diamond Wedding. We welcomed three visitors, Kit Bramley, Sally Smith and Maureen Beckett. Brenda Sheard gave an entertaining report on the Warwickshire Federation Annual Meeting near Kenilworth. Among the speakers was Heather Jacks who won the BBC show "Sewing Bee" in 2014 and amused the audience with her account of the intensive audition process and how terrifying it was to sew surrounded by TV cameras recording every word and stitch. Our speaker Susan Drage gave a fascinating talk and demonstration of 'Recycling with a Difference" and we admired the many items she had created from a variety of rubbish and scraps of lace, ribbon and dress material. These included plaited dog-leads and knitted clutch-bags made from strips of plastic carrier bags, silk ties stitched together to make decorative handbags, night light bases from flattened Coke cans, bracelets from ringpulls, CDs melted and moulded into flower bowls, napkin rings from loo roll holders, collage greetings cards from waste paper and even a spectacular flower wreath from a coat hanger decorated with paper and plastic roses. Brenda Sheard won the competition for something recycled from your home with an attractive waste paper bin made from a large empty tin covered in recycled braid and material. Jane Mills was second with her colourful woven paper table mats with Muriel Townshend's plant pot holder from

a lemonade bottle third. The competition in September will be for the longest runner bean grown by a member so President Christine Jones gave everyone 5 runner bean seeds to plant. The WI is providing refreshments and hot drinks during the lighting of the Beacon for the Queen's Birthday Celebration on the Croft on April 21st and we had a good response to our appeal for help and home-made cakes that night. At next month's meeting on May 10th, we will discuss how our Institute will vote on the two resolutions for the National WI meeting on June 11th. The first resolution is to urge the government and NHS to provide facilities to enable the regular carers of Alzheimer's disease and dementia sufferers to stay with them when they have been admitted to hospital. The second one calls on supermarkets to sign up to a voluntary agreement to avoid food waste, though passing surplus food to charities to help address the issue of increasing food poverty in the UK. The competition is for a limerick starting: "There once was a lady so shrill.." Visitors welcome as always.

Curdworth W.I. March 2016 The ladies in the Curdworth WI 2nd May for its third consecutive year. have had yet another busy month. There will be a starting ramp, a chicane

The Guest speaker at April’s meeting was Gill Harris. The glamorous and enthralling Gill gave a talk on the 20th anniversary of Breast Friends. Breast Friends is a support group, run by unpaid volunteers who have had to deal with breast cancer themselves. With the aim to help local women through a difficult time by offering friendship, support, emotional and practical help. Gill gave an emotive talk on how the charity was formed and how over the last twenty years they have developed and evolved, helping literally hundreds and hundreds of local women, men and their immediate families. Not only do Breast Friends offer a sympathetic ear and a shoulder to cry on but they also offer practical help with childcare, housework, gardening, in fact whatever is needed, to keep the house running. Gill talked with such passion and sentiment, the audience was enraptured, one minute in tears, the next minute laughing. This is an amazing charity, if you know anyone locally who could benefit from these inspiring women, or you wish to make a donation, then please visit www. breastfriends.org.uk The annual Fashion Show took place on Friday 8th April at a packed Curdworth Village Hall – it was literally standing room only. A great night was had, with some amazing bargains, thank you to the local businesses who kindly offered raffle prizes including Icons Hairdressers. A great event, which is always so well supported and a key fundraiser for the WI. The WI walkers and members of CWIRLS had a wonderful walk on Wednesday 13th April, finishing at the The Plough, Shustoke for a bite of lunch. The weather was kind and everyone enjoyed themselves. There are many events coming up in the WI calendar, something for everybody. The next key events are fast approaching, with The Soap Box Derby on Monday

and a small jump in the race course this year. This event, organised by a small and dedicated team of people from Curdworth, always attracts great interest with healthy competition between the entrants as to whose soap box will be the fastest. There will also be prizes this year for the most imaginative soap box design. It's a fantastic family day out with a wonderful community atmosphere. You won't need to bring lunch either because Curdworth WI will be selling homemade rolls, cream tea’s and cakes. This is an event not to be missed and it's not too late to enter! Contact Richard Heeley on 07984 717604. Racing starts at 11 am from the top of Farthing Lane, Curdworth. Please come along and support us. We are also looking forward to the Summer Show, on Thursday 2nd June, where our members and immediate family can showcase their skills, this year we will have four categories, flower exhibits, Produce, Homemade preserves and a cookery section. We also have the Treasure Hunt in the summer. Taking place at Atherstone, on Wednesday 29th June, the treasure hunt is open to family and friends. From 6.30 to 9.30. You will need to register with the Warwickshire Federation by Thursday 28 April. Cost is £5 per person. Also a reminder to the residents of Curdworth. The Free lunch takes place the last Friday of the month, April through to November, from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. The December lunch will be a special Christmas lunch. If you wish to volunteer or can help in any way, please contact Joshva Raja John Christopher at St Nicholas Church, Curdworth. Any support would be most appreciated. There are still seats available for the forthcoming trip to Kensington Palace on 12th May. Cost £35. Please contact Ann Howgate on 0121 308 0450 If you would like to go. And finally please note the May monthly meeting will be held at the Curdworth Church Hall rather than in the village Hall.

Coleshill WI March meeting

At the Coleshill WI March meeting, Julia Wallis from Nuneaton gave a fascinating illustrated talk on honey bees and described their complex life cycle with one queen served by 10,000 worker bees who feed her royal jelly. Once fertilised by the numerous drones in the colony, she lays thousands of eggs to produce the next generation of bees. Julia brought along several beerelated products including wax furniture polish, soap and candles plus several varieties of honey for

us to try and we were interested to sample the different tastes produced by the bees' various sources of food. Jane Hewitt won the competition for a recipe using honey (see her recipe to the right) with Elaine Partridge second and Jane Mills third. We welcomed a visitor Maureen Beckett to the meeting and celebrated a Big Birthday for Gill Tyers who brought delicious, beautifullydecorated cupcakes for everyone. For our social time, we split into small groups and played Kim's Game, trying to memorise as many as possible of 20 items on a tray which we were given 2 minutes to look at. Our winning group remembered 18 of the 20 items. The next meeting is on April 12th at 7.30pm when our speaker Susan Drage will talk about 'Recycling with a Difference." The competition is for something recycled from your home. Visitors welcome as always.

Education Luke Head Boy and Olivia Head Girl reflect on an active year As well as working hard in Year 13 towards their A Levels, Luke and Olivia have done an amazing job as Head Boy and Head Girl at The Coleshill School this year. We asked them both to reflect on their time as Head Boy and Head Girl.

Luke said “My role as Head Boy has been an enjoyable experience which has helped me progress personally through my involvement with planning the Sixth Form prom to representing the school in the local Church Remembrance Service. Although the role has been challenging, I feel it has paid dividends by giving me a solid skill foundation to build upon when I advance to higher education.”

Olivia commented “Being Head Girl has opened up so many opportunities to develop my public speaking, including being involved in formal community events and helping to plan the Sixth Form Prom. The role has been nothing but rewarding and I look forward to using the experience I have gained to succeed at University.” Mr Owen, Head of Sixth Form said “Luke and Olivia have set a great example in their leadership roles in the school. They have worked with their peers to develop aspects of the sixth form and represented the school on public occasions with poise and maturity. They have both secured excellent University offers and will no doubt go on to even greater success.”

Exciting new children’s author Dave Rudden visit to The Coleshill School The Coleshill School hosted a visit from Dave Rudden, children’s author, as part of his tour to celebrate the publication of his debut fantasy novel ‘Knights of the Borrowed Dark’. Children in Years 5 and 6 from Coleshill CE Primary, St Edward’s RC Primary and Woodlands School joined students in Year 7 from The Coleshill. It was a great opportunity for all the students to meet an author. Dave drew them into the fantasy world of his new book with interactive activities during the morning. Mr Smith-Childs, Headteacher, said “The children were really excited to meet the author of a published book and have a copy of the book signed by him. Dave gave them inspiration and encouragement for their own reading and writing. The visit was a real success”.

Respected multi-academy trust, the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership, which runs seven schools in Birmingham and North Warwickshire, has appointed a leading educational professional as its next chief executive.

National leader of education, Richard Gill, joint headteacher of the outstanding Arthur Terry School, led a strong field of applicants from across the country, following an extensive interview process. He will take up his post on September 1. This is a key appointment for the region and the partnership’s learning community of 4,000 students and more than 800 staff and governors. Richard will oversee the next stage of the ATLP’s development and ensure it continues to deliver quality education to its seven primary and secondary schools, teaching school and five children’s centres across Coleshill, Erdington and Four Oaks. Richard said: “I’m incredibly excited and proud about being given the opportunity to lead such a fantastic collaboration that is the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership. I am fortunate to work alongside the most talented and professional headteachers you could meet; professionals who work tirelessly for the young people and families within their care and who are committed to ensuring that all of our young people are given the very best life chances.” The 43-year-old is also the newly elected Teaching Schools Council member for the West Midlands. He also represents Sutton Coldfield on the management board of the Birmingham Education Partnership (BEP). Richard will be headlining a conference in Worcestershire next month alongside national schools commissioner, Sir David Carter, and chair of the National College, Roger Pope. He will take over from interim CEO Sally Taylor, who has this month been listed among the Birmingham Post’s most influential figures in education. Richard’s fellow NLE, Neil Warner, who is the strategic secondary lead for the ATLP, will

Outstanding educator to lead the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership become sole headteacher of the Arthur Terry School. Richard has played a key role during the growth of the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership in recent years, working very closely with former CEO Sir Chris Stone. He is passionate about the communities that the ATLP serves and works very closely with key agencies across the areas it covers – something that he is looking to grow further. Tim Sewell, chair of the ATLP Trust Board, said: “Richard has made a significant contribution to the development of our partnership over the past six years and he stands out as a dynamic leader who will move us forward. He is an authentic and experienced educator with a strong moral purpose, who respects the communities we serve and who values the ethos of teamwork across all our academies.

“This is an exciting time for the ATLP as we continue to build on our success and embrace new opportunities to ensure that every child from birth to 18 receives the very best education possible.” Richard joined the Arthur Terry School in 2010 as deputy headteacher, before being appointed headteacher, in a joint role with Neil Warner, in the same year. Under Richard and Neil’s leadership Arthur Terry has improved year on year in overall school performance. The outstanding academy is consistently the highest performing non-selective secondary school in Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham and is placed in the Top 100 non-selective schools, according to DfE performance tables. It boasts the largest school-based sixth form in the West Midlands and maintains an enviable reputation both locally, nationally, and globally – having been praised as “world class” by former education secretary Michael Gove. In 2011 Richard led on the successful application to become one of the first 100 teaching schools in the country and the Arthur Terry National Teaching School soon became one of only two providers, at that time, of initial teacher training – an area that is now recognised as a centre of excellence. Last year, Richard was designated a National Leader of

The Coleshill Post - April 2016- Issue 30

Education (NLE) by secretary of state for Education, Nicky Morgan, in recognition of his significant success in supporting other schools. His achievements were also recognised when he was elected by his peers and fellow headteachers to represent the West Midlands on the Teaching Schools Council, working closely with ministers and senior civil servants on the national education agenda. Richard is passionate about this part of his work and is very proud that through close collaboration with fellow headteachers from across the region, the regional director for Ofsted, Lorna Fitzjohn, and the regional schools commissioner, Pank Patel, there is a much greater collaboration so that the West Midlands has recently been recognised as a beacon of excellence in system leadership; work that Richard is leading on. Born in Bangor, North Wales, Richard moved to Lichfield at the age of three, where he now lives happily with his wife and three children who constantly encourage and support him in his ambition to improve education for all. Richard has helped to shape the lives of young people in Staffordshire. After spending a year at Sir Blessed William Howard School in Stafford, Richard took up a full-time position at The Friary School, Lichfield, as a teacher of Performing Arts, progressing through the career ladder as head of year, head of alternative curriculum, before devising, coordinating and leading a vocational programme for excluded, disadvantaged and disapplied students across Lichfield and Burntwood. During his tenure as assistant headteacher at Chase Terrace Technology College, Richard continued his partnership working with other schools in the locality and played a major role in the 14-19 agenda across Staffordshire, where his creativity and innovation played a major role in providing opportunities for more and more young people in the area. As well as his ongoing commitment to education, Richard is passionate about music. Following on from his tuba studies at Huddersfield University, the keen musician mixed his love of music through teaching as a peripatetic music teacher and as a freelance musician, performing in a number of nationally acclaimed brass ensembles and orchestras and working as a conductor/musical director in the professional theatre. Having committed himself to teaching, Richard became a full time teacher for Staffordshire Music Service, eventually becoming an area manager coordinating peripatetic instrumental teaching in South Staffordshire and providing a range of ensemble opportunities for local people across Codsall and Wombourne.

The accelerated hospital discharge service provided by St Giles Care Agency and launched in 2013 in partnership with Good Hope Hospital in Birmingham was a finalist in the Skills for Care Accolades 2015/16. The awards ceremony was held in Birmingham on Thursday 10th March and St Giles Care Agency came in the top three in the Most Effective Approach to Integration and New Models of Care category. Through the service, patients are discharged from the hospital immediately after they are confirmed medically fit, rather than having to wait for a statutory social care package to be available. St Giles Care Agency delivers the follow-up care that allows those patients to return home, typically for between 5.5 to 7 days per patient, until statutory services are able to take over. The service is funded by the hospital, but is much less than the cost of keeping a patient in a hospital ward, therefore offering substantial savings to the NHS as well as freeing up beds for other patients. The service also benefits patients who are able to recover in the familiar surroundings of their own homes rather than having to stay in hospital. Neil Antcliffe, General Manager for St Giles Care Agency, says: “We were delighted to be named in the top three for our accelerated discharge service, which has been leading the way in delivering hospital discharge services for elderly patients.

otherwise wouldn’t have been able to be admitted. “The benefits are clear to see – it is better for patients, better for families, better for the hospital and costs much less.” The service has also been shared with other local hospitals within St Giles Hospice’s catchment area such as Queen’s Hospital in Burton-on-Trent, Walsall Manor Hospital and the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust. St Giles Care Agency is an independent provider offering paid-for care. Its profits go to support St Giles Hospice, a registered charity which has been delivering highquality care and support for people living with cancer and other serious illnesses in the region since 1983. The agency’s team of highly qualified and fully-trained healthcare assistants provide care 24 hours a day, seven days a week on a paid-for basis, often within people’s own homes.

St Giles Hospice seeks new finance trustee Leading local charity St Giles Hospice is seeking a Trustee specialising in Finance to play a key role in the organisation's future by joining its Board.

St Giles Hospice is a local charity serving the community through its delivery of high-quality care to people living with cancer and other serious illnesses. The majority of care is funded through the generosity of local people, via fundraising, the hospice's network of shops across the region, and lottery activities. The NHS contributes circa 36% of the overall cost of St Giles Hospice services. As demand for services increases and income remains static, the hospice faces some significant challenges in achieving financial sustainability and designing efficient and innovative ways of delivering its high quality care. Trustees serve the charity on a voluntary basis. For the new Finance Trustee there will be a commitment to attend quarterly Finance Governance meetings and

Trustee Board meetings. Finance Trustees play a key role in providing assurance to the Board that St Giles is being led effectively with robust financial management. No previous connection to the hospice is required. Applicants must be qualified accountants. St Giles Hospice Chairman of Trustees, Charles Theaker, said: "This is an important appointment for us following recent retirements from the Board. Being a Trustee is a worthwhile and interesting experience, particularly during such challenging times as we currently face. Trustees are integral to the strategic development and governance of our charity." Local people who believe they have the experience and drive to become a St Giles Hospice Trustee are encouraged to contact the charity's Executive Assistant, Shirley Wall, by calling 01543 434537 or by emailing exec.assistant@stgileshospice.comexec.assistant@ stgileshospice.com.

A group founded by lymphoedema specialists – including a Nurse Consultant at St Giles Hospice – to improve services for children with the condition, has won a national award. The Children’s Lymphoedema Special Interest Group (CLSIG) was the winner in the ‘Chronic Oedema and Lipoedema Nurse of the Year’ category at the British Journal of Nursing Awards, which were announced last month at a ceremony in London. Lymphoedema is a chronic and permanent swelling which can affect any body area but most commonly the limbs. Some are born with it, or it may arise from damage to the lymph vessels or lymph nodes, and it can be a debilitating and painful condition. Helen Young, Nurse Consultant at St Giles Hospice’s Lymphoedema Clinic, is a founder member of CLSIG. She explains: “Our mission is to support nurses providing lymphoedema services for children by identifying and sharing the best current evidence that embraces the needs of the children and their families. “Many people aren’t aware that lymphoedema can affect children and this award will help change this perception, as well as demonstrate our dedication to improving services for children and their families. “St Giles Lymphoedema Clinic prides itself on being at the forefront of lymphoedema management and water_orton_dental_jan16.pdf 1 04/02/2016 21:50:10 this recognition acknowledges our commitment to

providing the highest level of care for our patients.” As well as improving lymphoedema services for children, the CLSIG works to develop a greater understanding of the experience of children and their families, enabling the comparison of new and existing treatments and identifying gaps in knowledge to provide practical guidance for all professionals. The group has developed a referral pathway to help lymphoedema nurses carry out decision-making in a systematic way, reducing the possibility of misdiagnosis and unnecessary investigations and ensuring appropriate care. The Lymphoedema Clinic at St Giles Hospice deals with more than 5,500 patient appointments every year and continues to be one of the forerunners in the care of the condition, as well as a worldwide centre of excellence. The clinic is dedicated to providing physical treatment and emotional support to help both children and adults with lymphoedema achieve the best possible quality of life. The clinic is based at the charity’s facility in Whittington, with satellite services offered at its Sutton Coldfield Supportive Care Centre and Holly Road Supportive Care Centre in Uttoxeter as well as a mobile unit catering for patients in Cannock. The well know choral group under the musical director Martin Bates performed Anontio Vivaldi’s ever popular Gloria written circa 1715, which still has the ability to uplift audiences all over the world, at the Shirley Methodist Centre on the 19th. March.

In addition to this piece the choir also performed Martin Bates own composition of the Gloria which has the ability to shock traditionalists with its jazz beat tones and the words of Lukes gospel sang in Latin and English to the background of loss and despair uplifted by the sacrifice and example of Jesus. Sadly, the well know Soprano Sue Bates was taken ill on the night and Allison Taylor, a member of the choir and a solo artist in her own right, stepped into the spotlight to perform magnificently. Allison is a member of the CBSO chorus, the female group Catalina, the London Choral and the English Concert Singers. Allison was accompanied by Fiona Kruber a renowned Alto singer who has an illustrious stage career singing roles including Guinevere in Camelot, title role Iolanthe, Anna in the King and I, Nancy in Oliver, Clotilde The New Moon, Emily Christmas Carol, Mabel in The Prates of Penzance and the Mother Abbess in the Sound of Music. Elite Fashion Show Birmingham

Fashion is at the forefront this summer as the Elite Fashion Show in association with Creative Media Design returns to the Burlington Hotel, Birmingham on Sunday 24th July for its second edition. After the inaugural event last year, deemed, ‘The finest fashion event in Birmingham outside of the Clothes Show’, the event aims to elevate the status of the Birmingham fashion industry the event aims to elevate the status of the Birmingham fashion industrythe show has been revitalised with a plethora of celebrity guests attending, incredible performances by musician Esther Turner and international dancer Shelley Anderson as well as 14 designers showcasing exclusive collections for the event including London Fashion Week and Vogue accredited designers.

Pioneered by then 17 year old Joshua Williams, Mr Birmingham 2015-17, the event also has a charity basis where all proceeds from the show are donated to leading mental health charity, ‘Mind’ and humanitarian charity, ‘Beauty with a Purpose’. A not-for-profit event, the midpoint of the show will see ‘Elite’ rebrand into 'Express: Looking good, feeling good!' in association with Mind where the Elite Fashion Show models will join people from the community with a lived experience of mental health illness in a stance of defiance towards stereotypes associated with those suffering whilst demonstrating unity in the fashion industry in breaking the stigma. “Fashion as a whole demands perfection. With visionary designers breaking boundaries within fashion to create collections that make an impact such as Alexander McQueen, it’s no wonder the industry is high paced and high pressure. With the fashion industry often being portrayed so negatively in terms of mental health, I think it is vital to include this part in the show in order to demonstrate unity between the industry and those suffering” stated Joshua, 18, “This set will allow real people from the community with a lived experience of mental health to gain confidence through shattering stereotypes associated with their illness in a dynamic and encouraging environment. It is a way of making a statement and saying mental health illness is nothing to be ashamed off”. The event in association with Creative Media Design aims to elevate the status of the Birmingham fashion industry whilst giving emerging and established designers the opportunity to showcase their collections in the heart of the second city.

Disney On Ice comes to Birmingham On it's opening night, the crowd was of course elated with anticipation of the renowned show with Aston Villa stars such as Alan Hutton, Brad Guzan and Ciaran Clarke and Birmingham City Players Jonathon Spector, Paul Caddis and Jonathan Grounds being amongst said crowd. The ice show spectacular showcased the beloved characters from The Lion King, Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid and, quite obviously, Frozen - and what a show it was. In it's typical fashion, the show was presented by Mickey and Minnie Mouse where the audience were introduced to a shortened down version of the film with the Ice Skaters performing elegant routines over the music. On it's opening night in Birmingham, a Small World After All played as skaters took to the ice. Unfortunately, within the first few minutes, a skater had fell, knocking into the set much to the awe of the crowd. That's not to say it affected the introduction too much but it was rather surprising but surely it couldn't happen again. It was then into a disappointing rendition of the Lion King. Technically, it was amazing with a giant Raffiki guiding the set and Simba and Nala performing some jaw dropping moves that had the crowd on their feet including the feared headbanger. After the Lion King hit

Disney On Ice presents Silver Anniversary Celebration in Birmingham To celebrate Disney On Ice presents Silver Anniversary Celebration coming to Birmingham Aston Villa stars Alan Hutton, Brad Guzan, Ciaran Clarke and Birmingham City players Jonathan Spector, Paul Caddis and Jonathan Grounds attended a magical evening at the Genting Arena last night. The stars attended a VIP meet and greet with Disney’s own Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse before attending the show itself. The ice show spectacular showcases beloved characters from The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Peter Pan and of course Frozen. The show is touring the UK until 15th May 2016 and tickets can be purchased from disneyonice.co.uk

Broadway with the most spectacular, vibrant African set imaginable, it just seemed very plain in comparison to the other parts of the show. Another new set followed with the introduction of Peter Pan! With Tinkerbell sprinkling her glitter over the ice and the cast flying high on suspended ropes, it gave that extra bit of magic the crowd was expecting. Captain Hook and his comical sidekick were the villains you love to hate but were quickly vanquished by a marvelled Peter Pan. The Little Mermaid again took centre stage in this years Disney On Ice show showing that the mermaid fever isn't ending anytime soon. With a theatrical performance of Under the Sea with creatures of all sizes and colours taking to the ice, I couldn't help but think why this wasn't implemented into the Lion King. This years Ariel gave a stellar performance alongside a giant inflatable Ursula that the crowd went wild for. It was just a little bit disappointing that, after previous successful years, the incredible stunts that Ariel performed whilst suspended in the air on a rope was cut from the show. This didn't stop the set from striking glee into the hearts of all mermaid fans in the arena. With almost every child dressed in a blue dress, with a long blue train and blonde hair, the screams of joy for the next set after the Little Mermaid were of course for one of Disney's biggest films in recent times, Frozen. The set was the largest of the show with the background to match capturing the hearts of the children with a thrilling routine with the hits that we have all come

to love. With it being the most anticipated set, it was surprising where for the second time that night, a cast member fell on the ice - this time being Anna as she took her solo. It must be said, her recovery was quite spectacular and she gave a brilliant performance despite visibly being in pain. What stole the show was Angela Lien's rendition of Let It Go. Out of all the performers the evening, she was by far the strongest. With no back-up skaters on set, no significant backdrops, she skated a remarkable routine with very few special effects and it left the audience in awe. Her performance was commendable and left a lasting impression. After her performance, the crowd was still excited as Olaf came onto set. And fell over. And his giant head fell off. As Anna and Kristoff rushed to his aid, there was much confusion in the arena as to whether this was part of the show. The struggle to get his head back on however proved it was not. Overall, the show was of course a magical event that is held in high regard by children and adults alike. With a few errors, nothing could stop the momentum that is Disney On Ice. The cast performed remarkably and even amidst an error that would shake any performer, they continued giving it their all and for that they cannot be faulted. The show is of course recommended and will continue it's tour around the country.

Stardust for Oil. Energy's Holy Grail. It may well be old hat, but some things are just so perfect, such wonderful reminders of our luck and utter brilliance that constant repetition should be as compulsory as breathing. Now the secrets out we should look at ourselves and everything around us and try to partially grasp the unique miracle our very existence represents.

It is not only the unbelievable impossibility that we had to wait over three billion years for an experiment called evolution to come up with us, but that our forebears also had to avoid sabre tooth tigers, Genghis Khan and various plagues and still find time for a bit of rumpy pumpy before popping off. And even all that's only a tiny bit of the seemingly endless round of nip and tuck that sees us high and dry, alive and kicking here in 2016, for to get the prize winning evolutionary show on the road, you first need a planet. And they don't grow on trees. They grow in stars. Nearly there! Sorry. The thing is, our lucky little survival story started long before life, long before our little world in its lovely little solar system and long before our sun coalesced from the detritus of other, bigger exploded suns. The truth seems to be that every scrap of you me and planet earth other than a bit of hydrogen, was formed by fusion in cores of early mighty suns that blew apart as a sort of grand finale that at the same time made a few billion tons of gold and other heavy elements. Quite a performance really and pissing all over our lovely little planet now that we have one, seems a bit perverse when we share it with loads of other similarly lucky creatures, and anyway, beside all that, we have absolutely nowhere else to go. Our problem, now universally understood even by those who deny it for money, is that our atmosphere, as thin

relatively as cling film around a basketball, has now become unbalanced, and as a result has slightly changed the way it performs just one of its jobs. It still fends off meteorites and highly dangerous cosmic rays, it distributes our vital oxygen, organises water vapour and rainfall, holds up birds and planes, is solely responsible for breezes and hurricanes and lets us tan rather than cook. What it can no longer do perfectly for us is to keep the annual cycle of temperature at the optimum of the recent past. For over 100 million years the planets ecosystem has safely stored away the leftovers of dead living things. Dead or alive that's carbon with add-ons. It's lots and lots of it. Dinosaurs outweighed us, insects massively outweighed dinosaurs and oceanic algae would bury that lot. Somehow, either to keep the balance or maybe purely by chance, countless billions of tons of carbon have been stored as treasure trove, safely underground, in the form of coal, gas, and oil. And we, being only human, burn it for our energy needs, and for every ton of carbon, two tons of our precious oxygen is taken from the lovely blue atmosphere to make the infamous carbon dioxide. It's going to kill us. No ifs and buts. Not nicely either. Famine and conflict. Just like the good old days. It is reasonable to argue that if we were not driven by the accumulation of material wealth with its concomitant urges of greed and excess, then we'd be safely on track to environmental bliss. But we are. So a solution is needed that will provide a source of unlimited energy that at the same time leaves not one scrap of pollution. None at all. Anywhere. And we know exactly what that is. It stares us in the face every day. We see trillions of gigajoules thrown into space every second, and just as the sun has done this every day for 4 billion years so it will do so for another 4. It's called nuclear fusion and we know how it works and we have made it happen here on earth quite a few times

in the recent past until we sensibly stopped doing it. Because the only way we can kick off a chain reaction of nuclear fusion, a process requiring enormous pressure and temperatures approaching 200 million degrees is by using a fission weapon, a nuclear bomb, as the trigger. And nuclear fission, unlike fusion, is a filthy polluting reaction that leaves behind tons and tons of waste that will remain dangerously radioactive for thousands of years. For the record so to speak, the fission weapons unleashed on Japan, had the explosive equivalent of 20,000 tons of TNT, killed tens of thousands by blast and a similar number by radiation later. At the height of the cold war Russia exploded a thermonuclear fusion hydrogen bomb with a 50 million ton equivalence. The power of fusion is awesome, horrifying, yet if we can work out how to start a controlled reaction that joins two types of hydrogen together making helium with some left over energy then the human race will be off and running. Little suns in every country and no need for hydrocarbons apart from paint maybe, or a bit plastic. And make up of course. For 60 years mankind has experimented with fusion and gently made progress. It's thought a break-even point, that's when the energy produced equals the energy put into it, is maybe the ever quoted 10 years away. Great pressures are created and our biggest lasers utilised in creating a bit of the centre of the sun. Its difficult theory and even harder technologically. All chemical reactions, Semtex exploding, petrol burning have at the end a residue of stuff exactly equal in weight to the start stuff. Nuclear isn't like that. Here matter becomes energy. You finish up with a bit less than you started with. Not a lot. Don’t need a lot. The most amazing scientist showed us the prize. The energy released is equivalent to the speed of light squared.186000 squared. E=Mc squared. That'll do nicely thanks.

The Great Barrier Grief. A Warning. Birmingham International Station disaster for most of us. Here's why Returning last week with some of the family Sadly, it isn't funny, it's bloody frightening. A close relation has a large valuable property in Bath. from a two night stay in Barcelona, we popped Because the people involved in this had only one objective into the station concourse for a quick look at in mind, i.e. replacing people with machines in order to Thinking of selling she called her financial adviser like rich have more money for shareholders and the bosses, no-one people do, and this is what he advised. At the moment , he the barrier monster. Ah! It was dead at last. Legs and arms akimbo it lay there with the public trampling through treating it's idiotic slots with thoroughly deserved contempt. A million quid folly planned, thought about, drafted, put in the hands of thousand pound an hour consultants, and presented by all the relevant experts to the mighty brains of The Department for Transport. And quite simply, it does not work. And these are exactly the same people who are planning, ha ha, HS2 and the "upgrade" to the Bath Bristol and beyond line. Judging by the crowded car park, a lot of you must have followed this blunder on a daily basis. Some of you may have been following orders for its construction and definitely some of you would have been posted at the barrier helping passengers through by overriding the stupid thing. For those of you who haven't used this station but may be rich enough to catch trains elsewhere, we have a vast two part set of ticket operated gates, all very new and shiny, and very very costly, in a very very wrong place. It is built in the near middle of the concourse between some handy pre-existing pillars with amenities on either side of it, not amenities one side and trains on the other as it should be. Like The Department for Education and The Department for Health for example, no-one talks to teachers, doctors and nurses when making their basically elitist decisions, but calls in instead the accountants and PR people. Here, in lovely Brum laid out for all to see, is a magnificent illustration of thoughtless and arrogant incompetence.

bothered to consider or contemplate the poor mugs who pay for everything That's Us. If anyone had bothered to ask any of us we could have said, Yes, well, I get my paper there, go over there to the loo, come back here for a coffee, and sometimes meet a friend in the bar round the corner. Because no-one asked, up to six people in red coats have to stand at the barrier unlocking the infernal machines to retrieve swallowed toilet driven tickets. I spoke to a gang of these lovely redcoats who, between constant unlocking procedures, at first loyally defended the donkeys in admin, before falling into baffled hilarity. Barcelona got an early mention, not as a boast I promise but because due to our shoe string way of life we used the underground and here, if anyone here cared to look, they put passengers first. There is an easy guide list at the barrier. Sadly but not incomprehensibly, in Spanish. So, after having our first purchases swallowed for ever, we asked and were helped by a couple of locals into using this inexpensive, modern system. If Virgin or the DfT had sent a researcher they'd have saved millions and the system would work Now here's the frightening bit. Today I telephoned the station, Network Rail, Virgin and the Government. Try it sometime, none of them really want to actually talk, but believe me please. A billion has already been frittered away in planning HS2 and loads more will wasted and it will be a

said, I can get you one and a half million, but if you can wait a couple of years til the London Bristol line is upgraded, I will then get you two and a half. For when the line is done and travel time reduced by 20 mins then the rich Arabs and wealthy Chinese will start to buy up there. Rich foreigners who do not want to watch our beautiful countryside drift by, will buy beautiful property as investments and leave them empty. Prices will go up, the one percent whose only gift is the dubious one of making heaps of dosh will make even more and the rest of us will tumble into renting and two more lovely cities will become wealthy wastelands. Another very close relation is a geologist. Based in London, his firm is instructed to survey all the bridges on the line to Bristol. These bridges, most of them beautiful stone or brick structures and well over 150 of them, are to be raised 9 inches to facilitate electrification. In their tenders the multi nationals tasked with this uplifting work will outline plans to lovingly dismantle these ancient landmarks, then numbering the stones before matching the colour and texture from local quarries with the additional requirements, and then rebuilding using only choirboys and vestal virgins to mix the mortar. If only. When the time comes donations will be made along with excuses and reinforced concrete will carry the day. Check the barrier folks. Think before we vote.

OUT Cheaper to buy than rent in nearly half of Britain's cities Purchasing a property is now more cost- average monthly mortgage payment comes in at £595 - Lawrence Hall, spokesperson for Zoopla comments: “Once you get past the initial fees that come with a house effective than renting in nearly half (48 per £131 less than the average monthly rent bill of £726. cent) of British cities, according to new research Conversely, the south of the UK offers much better purchase, such as a deposit and stamp duty, our figures value-for-money for renters than owners. On average, show that it can pay to try and get on the property ladder. from leading property website Zoopla. Zoopla’s analysis of the cost of renting a two-bedroom home compared to servicing a mortgage reveals that buying now works out cheaper than renting in 48 per cent of cities in the UK on a month-by-month basis, compared to 36 per cent when the data was last analysed in October 2015. Property purchasers did particularly well when compared to their renting counterparts in Scotland, the West Midlandsand in Northern England. In Glasgow, rental payments amount to an average of £578 per month, whereas monthly mortgage payments only totaled £450. According to these figures, Glaswegian buyers are paying 22 per cent – or £128 a month – less to own their property rather than rent it. In Coventry, the

the annual rental bill in Cambridge comes to £13,248 – almost £10k less than the average homeowner can expect to pay per year in mortgage repayments (£22,476). This is closely followed by London where owning a home costs an average of £15,216 (46 per cent) more per year than renting, and Brighton where owning a property costs £4,812 (29 per cent) more annually on average than renting. In Britain’s 50 biggest cities, the current average asking rent for a two-bedroom home is £690 per month, while the average monthly mortgage costs £749 to service, and the average asking price is £149,732. As a result, servicing a 90 per cent LTV mortgage typically costs £59 more per month than the average tenant would pay for renting such a property.

On top of the enjoyment that can come with owning your property, buyers may also find themselves with more disposable income at the end of the month than those renting their homes. Particularly if you’re in Scotland, Northern England or in the West Midlands, taking the first step onto the ladder and sacrificing the flexibility of renting can be a much cheaper alternative. “In London and the South, it’s largely a different story. Despite the very high rents of London, and relatively high rents of Cambridge, Brighton and other southern cities, getting onto the property ladder is still proving tough. The housing supply pressure in London in particular has become so intense that getting onto the property ladder can be significantly more costly per month than renting.” CREDIT: Zoopla

We are keen to welcome new clients to the salon which is why we are open three late nights during the week until 9pm, with half price colour with a cut and blow dry on Tuesdays. Tories delight as they push through £200 charge for the elderly

Plans by North Warwickshire Borough Council to charge elderly residents over £200 per year for the previously free, Borough Care emergency alarm system have been passed. The Conservative administration dismissed the concerns of local residents, over 1000 of whom had signed a petition against the charge. Labour Councillors opposed the charge and voted against the new policy that fails to take into account a

person’s need or ability to pay. Labour Spokesperson, Cllr Brian Henney said, “The Labour view is very simple. Borough Care needs to be reformed to meet the needs of our ageing community but this is not a reform, it is the nail in the coffin for a service that has existed since the 1980’s. This is charging the elderly for simply getting older. It’s unfair and it means the poorest will suffer the most.” The Council rejected calls by Labour Councillors to have this issue debated and voted on at Full Council by creating some kind of fantasy story that Labour would have charged for Borough Care had they won the last election. Cllr Emma Stanley made the point very clearly that Labour had no plans to charge, she said “Prior to the election, the then Conservative Leader, Cllr Les Smith asked the then Labour Leader of the Council if there were any plans to charge for Borough Care. The answer was a very clear and emphatic no! It’s pure fantasy to suggest any different.” Labour Councillors have now pledged to use a Council tool called a ‘minority report’ to force the Council to discuss this again at the next Full Council meeting. Labour’s Health Spokesperson, Cllr Jacky Chambers

said “This is a huge decision for the Council. It looks like hundreds of vulnerable and elderly people will be forced out of a service that is specifically there to support them. Cost is a barrier and a flat charge across the whole borough that fails to take into account people’s ability to pay or their actual health needs is a regressive policy that impacts on the poorest most.” Labour will vote against the proposals to charge, just as we have done during the discussions over the last few months. Labour Group Leader, Cllr Adam Farrell said “The Tories made a decision, then held a so called consultation, the response showed hundreds of people will leave the service, over a thousand people signed a petition and even two Tory Borough Councillors couldn’t support the plans at a recent full Council meeting. The Conservative Leadership have dismissed all this, have said petitions are not important and seem intent on destroying a service that is so valued, so important and so special to the many thousands of older people in our Borough. Labour will force every single Tory Councillor to record their vote at Full Council next month so that the electorate know just what their Councillor has done to such a fantastic service.”

Disabled adults to benefit thanks to Coleshill businesses

The Coleshill Post

St Catherine’s Day Service on Coventry Road is set to benefit from £10,600 raised at Father Hudson’s Annual Fundraising Ball towards vital refurbishments.

Coleshill and District U3A

The 112th Annual Fundraising Ball took place in February, drawing people from across the local area to gather and raise funds for charity. This year’s ball was an unprecedented success, setting a new fundraising record and seeing an increase in the number of attendees and supporters. Greater support from local businesses was invaluable in making the night a success and was made possible by the dedicated committee of volunteers and Ginny Cullen, Father Hudson’s Fundraising Officer, who reached out to old and new supporters to make them aware of the cause. The supporters from the Coleshill business community were: Auto Q Motors, Browne’s Hair Design, Crucial Trading, Em’s Custom Cakes, Frederic Cox Hairdressers, Gascoignes of Coleshill, Hawthornes Hardware, HG Jerromes & Sons Decorators, Penny Johnson Flowers, The Lodge Veterinary Centre, The Upper Crust and Sole 2 Sole Yoga. Businesses from further afield also got involved, including AM Cooper & Sons, Quorum Print and Design, UC4, Walk on Flooring and WB the Creative Jewellery Group,

all from Birmingham, and Fairway Training, Greener Options, PJM Group Ltd, Regent Document Solutions, Savona Provisions and Wright Hassall Solicitors. The cheque was presented by Chris Loughran, Chair of the committee, to Helen Anson, Manager of St Catherine’s Bungalows, and Karen McPherson, Day Service Manager, after a tour of the facilities so volunteers could see first-hand how the money they raised will make a difference to the lives of local disabled people. St Catherine’s Day Service has served disabled people from Coleshill and further afield since the 1980s. The staff at the centre do a wonderful job, offering a wide variety of activities and opportunities to service users. However the building, a converted school, is in need of renovations to bring it up to a standard that matches the quality of the service provided. Work has now begun on the first of the renovations – upgrading and expanding the sensory garden. When it is finished, the garden will offer a stimulating environment for adults with complex care needs to explore their senses through touch, sound, sight and smell, while benefiting from fresh air. Next in line will be the development of an indoor sensory area, renovating the specialist hydrotherapy pool and upgrading the personal care facilities.

In 2016, we have assembled a programme not to be Do you know where the ‘church on the hill’ Steve also drew the audience’s attention to the grave is in Birmingham? Do you know what the of Nanetta Stocker. Inscribed on her headstone are the missed. Our speakers will be telling us about: Titanic words: and its connection to the Midlands; travelling and living Birmingham Set was? Steve Record, a retired shipping executive and resident of Water Orton, gave a highly educational talk on the history of Birmingham Cathedral - the ‘church on the hill’. Now a voluntary chaplain, Steve spends a portion of his time in the cathedral offering comfort to those in need, and sharing his knowledge of the history of this wonderful building. Birmingham Cathedral - more correctly known as St Philip’s Cathedral - began life as a humble parish church. Designed by architect Thomas Archer (a contemporary of Sir John Vanbrugh and Nicholas Hawksmoor), St Philip’s is considered one of the finest examples of a baroque church in England. The need for it came about owing to Birmingham’s population explosion during a period of rapid industrialisation. The existing parish church - St Martin’s - could not service the burgeoning population nor provide sufficient burial ground. Construction commenced during the reign of Queen Anne. £5000 had been spent on the church but funds ran out before the tower was finished. Ten years later, the tower was completed thanks to Sir Richard Gough, a wealthy local merchant who lived in Edgbaston Hall. In 1870, owing to the deteriorating state of the external stonework, the cladding was replaced. Fifteen years later, the Burne-Jones windows replaced the existing undecorated leaded lights. Commissioned by heiress Emma Villiers Wilkes, Edward Burne-Jones crafted three windows: the Ascension (1885), the Nativity and Annunciation of the Shepherds (1887-8), and the Crucifixion ((1887-8). A fourth window, the Last Judgement, was added in 1897. During WW2, these windows were removed for safe keeping. Fortuitously, as the cathedral suffered considerable damage from an incendiary bomb dropped in October 1940.

In memory of Nannetta Stocker who departed this life, May 4th 1819, aged 39 years. The smallest woman ever in this kingdom. Possessed with every accomplishment, only 33 inches high. A Native of Austria.

Isn’t it amazing, to think that Nanetta wasn’t even as tall as her headstone! And the Birmingham Set? The Birmingham Set was a group of students at the University of Oxford in England in the 1850s, most of whom were from Birmingham or had studied at King Edward’s School. Active within the visual arts, they played a significant part in the birth of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Facts at a glance: • In 1660 the population of Birmingham stood at around 6,000. By 1732 it was estimated to have risen to 15,000. • St Philip’s was mostly built by 1715 and completed in 1725. • The Burne-Jones windows were installed from 1875 onwards. • The Diocese of Birmingham was created in 1905 with Charles Gore as its first bishop. St Philip’s became a cathedral. • In 1940 St Philip’s was extensively war damaged by fire. • In 1948 Bishop Gore installed electricity in the cathedral. Restoration was completed. • The Birmingham Set included Charles Joseph Faulkner, Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris, Cormell Price, Richard Watson Dixon, Edwin Hatch, William Fulford and Harry MacDonald • Edward Burne-Jones was born on August 28th 1833, at 11 Bennetts Hill.

A family-owned hotel situated in the heart of the Midlands has undergone a major expansion with the addition of 30 new bedrooms and luxury suites, representing a significant investment of almost £2million in the local economy.

Set in 75 acres of North Warwickshire countryside, the award-winning Lea Marston Hotel now boasts an impressive 118 luxury ensuite rooms, as well as extensive wedding, spa, conferencing and event facilities. The additional superior, executive and luxury suites have been provided in a brand new extension to the hotel, spanning two floors and overlooking the golf course. All 30 air-conditioned rooms have been styled by local designer Ilze Reinke, based in No Mans Heath, and feature warm contemporary interiors, cutting edge technology and the little luxuries that are in keeping with Lea Marston Hotel’s ethos of providing a warm welcome.

As well as the new build, the hotel has been given a brand new look with extensive refurbishment throughout. An additional 30 members of staff have been taken on to help keep day-to-day operations running smoothly as the business goes through this latest phase of growth. The new look and new rooms were unveiled at a special launch party last week attended by 100 guests and visitors, including suppliers, corporate customers and the hotel’s long-standing health club members. Guests were treated to performances from Wolverhampton singer Shaun Moore, as well as food and refreshments from a range of local businesses, before taking a tour of the new facilities. A raffle held during the evening raised £245 which is being donated to Woodlands School for pupils with additional needs, in Coleshill. Lea Marston Hotel sales and marketing director, Phillip Allsopp, said: “As a family-run hotel group, we are always looking to grow and expand our offering in order to maintain our reputation as one of the best

independent hotels in the Midlands. “With so much to offer here at Lea Marston Hotel and in the wider surrounding area, demand is always high and the new rooms represent one of our most significant investments to date. Although the additional facilities have only been available for a few weeks, we have already had nights where we have been sold-out across the hotel, which is fantastic news for the area. “This is an exciting time for us as we are also launching a new brand which further complements our company vision, mission and values of promoting our personality and warmth as a leading family business at the heart of the community. “I would like to thank all the suppliers and staff involved in the new bedroom block, but most of all our thanks goes to the wonderful team of people here at Lea Marston who have worked so hard to get things ready in time for our opening. We look forward to welcoming many more guests to stay at Lea Marston Hotel in the future.”

Local author Anne Pearson publishes first novel, Dread Girl forty years, but that day has finally arrived. Dread Girl is a coming-ofage story about four friends. Set in 1983, the story follows four fifteen-yearold friends who are going through teenage angst, with all its insecurities and fizzing hormones. The main character, Annie Wilkinson, is a worrier and an insomniac. She doesn’t wear trendy clothes, doesn’t have the right hair, has gaps in her teeth, is awaiting a set of dentures and has no boobs! She has never had a boyfriend and only been kissed once, which resulted in her being covered in saliva. Worst of all, she is nominated for the next Head Girl, or as it is known in Annie’s school, Dread Girl. If you attended Woodlands Junior School, or Smiths Wood Comprehensive, or if you grew up in Chelmsley Wood or had a B36 postcode, then this book may jog memories of your childhood. Dread Girl is now available to order. I would love it if you would buy a copy and more importantly post a review. I hope you enjoy it; that it makes you laugh, helps you remember some great times, and maybe brings back some truly wonderful memories from your childhood. I wrote the book for teenage girls, however if you were a teenager in the 1980’s – this might be the book for you? A very wise man once said to me that your schooldays are the best days of our lives. How true. (I miss you every day, dad).

Anne Pearson was brought up on Smith’s Wood. She has just published her first novel which is available to buy on Amazon. She told Talk About North Solihull Editor Terrie Knibb gave this us: Review: When I was eight years old, I told my mum I wanted to write a book. She smiled, ruffled my hair and kissed me on the forehead. “One day you will, bab” she said. It has taken

Thought provoking, amusing, sad. Anne Pearson grew up in Smith’s Wood and the book is based around her experiences at what is now Smith’s Wood Sports College.

But what I thought would be a typical coming of age novel, has lingered with me and challenged the usual ideas of what leadership and success are. I guess that the book is targeted towards teenage girls, but it will appeal to anyone who went to school in the latter half of the twentieth century. It will also interest those who are drawn to novels which explore issues of diversity and equality. I make the book seem very worthy, and it is because it forces the reader to consider their values. But, at the same time it is very easy and interesting to read, following the life of Annie, an anxious, unassuming teenager whose only wish is to blend into the background and remain unnoticed. But her very humanity positively impacts on the lives of the people she comes in contact with making her stand out.

New Youth Club is great news for Coleshill Cllr Adam Farrell

Town & Borough Councillor Coleshill North REGULAR COLUMN

Coleshill has a new youth club and that is great news for everyone in our town. We lost our County Council run youth club some years ago so this new venture brings back a youth club that can only be of benefit to the whole community. As a Councillor I sometimes receive comments about young people causing mischief, noise or nuisance but often those comments are followed with the line, “well I suppose there is nothing else for them to do locally”. Well now there is and it means young people have somewhere to go, activities to enjoy, a safe place to

socialise and a place to meet new friends. The establishment of a youth club means parents will be able to rest easy knowing their kids have a safe and enjoyable place to go on a Friday evening. This can only be a good thing. The Town Council working in partnership with Warwickshire Community and Voluntary Action is setting up the youth club. It’s being achieved at a fraction of the cost of the previous youth centre and will provide young people with a venue every Friday evening that also offers a large outdoor space so that sporting activities can also be part of the offer we make to our young people.

The new youth club will formally launch on Friday 6th May at Coleshill Community Centre on Temple Way. Please do share the news, let your kids know, let your grandkids know and let the neighbours know because this is a positive move forward for Coleshill and our young people. The Council is contracting an organisation to provide qualified youth workers for the Friday evening sessions but we’re always looking for volunteers to come forward and share their skills, knowledge and experience. You can contact the Council on 01675 463 326 for more information.

The Coleshill Post

Innovation should be praised and not feared Did anyone hear about Bugatti making the new fastest car in the world? No neither did I till two weeks ago, and even then I didn’t take much notice. The looks are slightly different and the engine has been reworked so that makes the name, the biggest change to the vehicle. Chiron is what they’ve come up with. To be honest I don’t think it sounds anywhere as good as the Bugatti Veyron but with a faster top speed, more power, more torque and…… well all the rest of the number that should excite me, I have to ask myself why. Was 1000BHP not enough, no ok 1200BHP? Now 1500BHP with this new car. So what happens after this, as firstly we don’t have roads capable of 260 MPH and secondly the human brain can’t process the information fast enough at that speed to even slightly stay in control of a car if anything ever went slightly wrong. This left me pondering on why I seemed to have it out for this car. It’s the fastest in the world and looks amazing inside and out so why the dislike. Then it hit me. There’s no innovation to the vehicle at all. The numbers are there purely to warrant the price tag which

is a shade under £1,900,000.00. Now I’m not saying it’s easy to make a car like that but when you choose not to incorporate hybrid technology as twin stage turbos would make more power, I feel the whole point of these hyper cars is lost. Technology should be at the forefront of these cars, so choosing to avoid anything new and polish what’s already around shouldn’t be praised. This is why Porsche in my eyes won the hyper car war. McLaren had the best car, Ferrari had the most stupid name and I guess the best sound, but Porsche actually went out to make the supercar of the future. With its hybrid technology actually able to be used as a hybrid and not just to make the car faster, it can glide around in total silence for 18 miles with its two electric motors connected directly to the front wheels and a third motor connected between the engine and gearbox. The 4 wheel drive and 4 wheel steering made the extra weight from the larger battery packs more manageable when driving fast. All of this put together makes a supercar with 850bhp manageable every day if needed and more environmentally friendly than most cars on the roads today.

This means a huge step in progression of the supercar and cars in general of the future. We now know that we can make technology work and not just as a gimmick. Which comes back to where I started. Just because you make a car that can do amazing speeds does not make it an amazing car. Oh and lastly if some of you didn’t know what Ferrari called their latest car, it was Ferrari TheFerrari. Makes you think how hard it’s going to be when they name the next car as this one is literally called The Ferrari.

Game Review

The Coleshill Post

by Steve Graham

Tom Clancy's The Division

I played the Beta to “The Division” when it was released to the public back in February. I remember thinking it looks great, but it's very limited. More about that later.

The background story to “The Division” is that it's set in New York City in the present day. A massive pandemic has hit the city and caused the collapse of society. You, the player are an agent, and member of The Division, who is tasked with cleaning up and saving what hope that remains. As I said earlier, my first impressions of the game, (ok it was only a Beta), were that it was a fantastic looking game, but maybe somewhat limited. I basically finished the Beta and thought well is that it? How wrong I was. I bought the full release game about 3-4 days after the general release, and I booted it up and immediately there was a definitive difference over the Beta. For one the starting mission was different, and the opening scenes shown in the Beta were quite a way into the full game. The game itself looks amazing, with New York City being brought to life, or not if you will due to the pandemic. The player is immersed straight into a virus hit city with all the chaos and danger that brings! The occupants of New York manage to fill you with a sense of dread and uneasiness that anything could happen at any moment. The mechanics of the game are pretty solid too with you levelling up by completing story missions, side missions and killing enemies. You start from Level 0, obviously, where you have just basic weapons and no skills. Then having moved up to level 1, you gain your first skill, which is an area scanner. This enables you to see all nearby enemies, therefore getting the drop on them before they see you. The weapons and accessories in The Division are graded by colour: Black: Common Green: Uncommon. Blue: Rare. Purple: Epic. Orange: Legendary.

Depending on your level at the time you will only be able to equip weapons that correspond to that level. So for example, if you're say level 3 you won't be able to use a level 4 weapon or accessory. In the very middle of the map is the Dark Zone, or DZ as the cooler people out there seem to be referring to it! This is an area where the enemies are A LOT harder, but the weapons and accessories that can be found are of a much higher value. Also, the game as a whole isn't player versus player, instead you can either play it on your own or team up with either your friends or random players. The Division has to be connected online continually to enable you to play. So if you haven't got an internet connection or you don't have Playstation Plus, this game won't be for you. Now back to the Dark Zone. Like I said in the main game you can't shoot other players, no matter how much the psychopath in you wants to. But once you enter the Dark Zone then you can shoot other players if you choose to do so. But doing this will turn you “Rogue”, and if you die whilst “Rogue” then you lose some money and maybe the weapons you have picked up. There's always one player on pretty much every online game that likes to troll other players, and just run round shooting anything that moves! I've just recently reached

level 30, the top level on the main game, and I ventured into the Dark Zone. I'm definitely not the worlds greatest player and I'm not the worse either, but the enemies in the Dark Zone compared to the main game are a whole different ballgame! Plus it's probably best to team up with friends rather than randoms, as if one member of your team gets an itchy trigger finger then he can steal all your weapons etc. Any weapons that are picked up in the Dark Zone also have to be airlifted out to be decontaminated before you can use them. My overall opinion of the game is that if you like roleplaying games and levelling up your character, then this game is for you. But it can get a bit boring as the missions seem to be a bit repetitive. Also I don't like the fact that to play the main story you have to be connected online. Most people with a PS4 I think have an internet connection, but this game alienates those who don't. So to sum up The Division, I'd said it's a fantastic looking game, but the journey to level 30 can be a bit of a slog and some of the missions and side missions are a bit alike.

8/10

ROBBIE SAVAGE: THE GOLDEN MALE

Pantomime football villain turned respected TV pundit Robbie Savage has always been able to successfully marry traditional masculine norms with more fashion-conscious sensibilities – epitomised by his no-nonsense playing style on the pitch alongside a staunch dedication to personal grooming. However, he has brought these two traits together in the most astounding of ways yet: by being sprayed from head-to-toe in gold as he opened the John Smith’s Golden Tanning Pub.

That’s a traditional pub that’s also a tanning bar for blokes, serving light and refreshing John Smith’s Golden Ale and glittering golden spray tans all under one gilded roof. Combining elements of a traditional British free house with an authentic beauty parlour, the unique golden popup has been created by John Smith’s Golden Ale as part of its new ‘Golden Ale For The Modern Male’ advertising campaign. John Smith’s modern males are encouraged to come along to the Golden Tanning Pub, enjoy the first new beer from the John Smith’s stable in 22 years and embrace all things gold.

By Alan Beckett Saturday 12th March Coleshill Town 2 v 1 AFC Wulfrunians A very close game. No score at half time but Wulfrunians took the lead through a disputed penalty. Coleshill equalised through Simeon Cobourne and then Josh Quaynor scored from a terrific free kick in the 94th minute for the winner.

Saturday 19th March Heanor Town 1 v 0 Coleshill Town Another very close game. The Heanor keeper should have been sent off for a foul outside box and went on to make several outstanding saves. The only goal from a goalmouth scramble three minutes from time. Tuesday 22nd March Quorn 0 v 3 Coleshill Town A quality performance which gave Quorn little opportunity to score. Simeon Cobourne scored twice for Coleshill with Mykel Beckley getting the third. Saturday 26th March Coleshill Town 0 v 3 Lye Town Lye have been average all season but they seem to raise their game when they play Coleshill. Town were 2-0 down after just 13 minutes and although they played much better from then on, they couldn't break down a determined visiting defence and Lye scored a third late on. Monday 28th March Coleshill Town 6 v 3 Coventry Sphinx A strange game! Coleshill led 2-0 through a Danico Johnson double! Sphinx scored before Mykel Beckley made it 3-1. Sphinx then hit back to level the scores again but Coleshill stepped up a gear and scored three more through Luke Barlone, Simeon Cobourne and Mykel Beckley. Saturday 2nd April Coleshill Town 6 v 0 Long Eaton United Coleshill blew away a very poor Long Eaton side with a Mykel Beckley double, then strikes by Giovanni Dainty, Luke Barlone, Danico Johnson and Dean Rathbone. Wednesday 6th April Continental Star 1 v 4 Coleshill Town Coleshill gained revenge for a shock defeat to the bottom club just a few weeks ago. A Mykel Beckley double, Luke Barlone and Shane Benjamin the Coleshill scorers in a one sided game. Saturday 9th April Shepshed Dynamo 2 v 2 Coleshill Town Coleshill came from behind twice to gain a draw at 4th placed Dynamo. Sam Adkins scored in the first half but Simeon Cobourne's leveller came in time added on. Saturday 16th April Boldmere St Micheals 1 v 6 Coleshill Town Coleshill travelled the short distance to neighbours Boldmere and ripped apart a very young side. Simeon Cobourne got himself a hat-trick, Gio Dainty, Shane Benjamin and Luke Barlone also on the score sheet. Monday 18th April Coventry Sphinx 2 v 3 Coleshill Town Coleshill deservedly took the lead through Mykel Beckley but were 2-1 down by half time. Sphinx had a player sent off which Coleshill took advantage of by levelling through Mykel Beckley and Simeon Cobourne scored the winner. Saturday 23rd April Coleshill Town 1 v 1 Sporting Khalsa Coleshill in 5th place played Sporting in 3rd place in probably the most entertaining game of the season. Sporting took the lead shortly after half time but Coleshill deservedly equalised through Sam Adkins and were unlucky not to go on to win the game.

Former Birmingham City footballer sprayed completely gold to launch John Smith’s Golden Tanning Pub

Today, in his role as honorary publican and golden tanning technician, Robbie Savage stripped down to his underwear, entered into the golden tanning tent and re-emerged as a living golden statue. He was then tasked with tending to the pub’s punters, offering them a golden complexion to match their John Smith’s Golden Ale. Everything in the John Smith’s Golden Tanning Pub is an unabashed tribute to the most lustrous of colours. From the walls, tables and chairs right down to the darts set and playing cards - it is a truly ore-inspiring experience. Robbie Savage said: “While I might have been cruelly overlooked for the Ballon d'Or in my playing days, being covered head-to-toe in gold paint for the day more than makes up for it. I’ve always had my golden locks, and today I’ve got an all-over Midas complexion to match. It’s the ultimate look for the modern male, and all thanks to John Smith’s Golden Ale.” The John Smith’s Golden Tanning Pub is open to the public on Wednesday 27th April, from 6pm until 9pm, with all customers receiving up to two free samples of John Smith’s Golden Ale as well as the chance to receive a golden spray tan just like Robbie’s.
