An excellent result was achieved at Cobar’s Annual Ram Sale last week with 100 per cent clearance of the 86 lots of White Dorpers, Dorpers and Australian White rams on offer.

Landmark Russell’s livestock sales manager Lucas Scales said this year’s sale had great local support as well as keen interest from buyers across the Western Division, Central NSW, right up into Queensland and down into Victoria (through AuctionsPlus online).

The average sale price was $2,100 with the top priced Ram selling for $4,000 which came from the Dell Dorper Stud south of Deniliquin.

It went to the Bulmar Dorper Stud near Orange.

Mr Scales said he had been pleased to see a lift in the season with the average price increasing this year by $600 compared to last year.

He said he could see more positive signs for the future with a strong demand from sheep producers who gearing up again.

Mr Scales said this market demand had encouraged a local stud, Ettiwanda White Dorpers, to bring forward their annual on-farm sale to October, five months ahead of their usual annual sale time.

More rain in the gauges for Cobar

Celebrating a big year

Stationery Essentials staff and family members Bill Behsman, Sharon Green, Ralph Behsman, Kathy Harbison, Nicola Harbison and Allison Murray celebrated their first anniversary on Saturday with balloons and cake.

Cobar has added another 18mm to this month’s rainfall total after steady rain on Friday and showers over the weekend.

The total for August now sits at 46.8mm after good falls the week before.

Some warmer weather was recorded mid last week with temperatures reaching 22 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday, before a sharp drop on Friday as the rainy weather set in, reaching a top of just 13 degrees.

The rain started in the early hours of Friday morning, with 2.4mm to 9am Friday, while a total of 13mm of rain was recorded in the 24 hours to 9am Saturday, and a further 1.2mm to 9am Sunday.

Saturday was warmer, reaching a top of 17.2, while Sunday recorded 16 degrees and Monday was also 17.

Cool weather is expected this weekend with the slight chance of some more showers.

A top of 17 is predicted today while tomorrow should start with a low of seven before a top of 15 and a partly cloudy day.

There’s a medium chance of a shower on Friday with a top of 15 expected.

Ice conditions are predicted for Saturday with a low of three before a top of just 13 degrees and a slight chance of a shower.

Sunday will also be chilly, dropping to just one degree overnight and only reaching a top of 13. Monday should be sunny with a top of 16 after another chilly morning.

Dispute with Great Western Hotel licence excludes minors The Great Western Hotel, which has for many years operated as a family hotel, is currently excluding minors due to a dispute with their licence.

The pub’s licensee Rachel Warren was put on notice last Wednesday following an audit inspection by police where it was discovered the hotel’s licence, which dates back to 1953, does not permit minors to enter.

“The issue is currently with the Office of Liquor and Gaming for clarification and we will be guided by them,” Rachel said.

She said they had no option but to close the pub last week following a police inspection or they would have faced hefty fines of $1,100 per minor if they were on site.

“We are a family business and enjoy the fact that families come to our hotel every day and enjoy themselves.

“It’s quite distressing to have to put a hold on that,” Rachel said.

The pub re-opened on Thursday however until the matter has been sorted, minors are still not permitted on the premises.

Before Rachel and partner Dave Portelli took over the hotel from Ashleigh and Monica Bellotti in 2016, the Bellottis had run it as a family hotel for eight years.

Long running licensee Jim Hagan and his wife Doreen (who had the pub for 30 years) also ran it as a family hotel.

Arrest following domestic assault

Police arrested a 31 year old Cobar man last week and charged him with multiple offences following a domestic dispute.

Police arrested the man around midday last Tuesday following a report he had struck another 55 year old man (known to him) across the face with a tree branch.

A 24 year old female intervened in the dispute and was also assaulted.

The 31 year old was taken to Cobar Police Station and charged with armed with intent to commit indictable offence; assault occasioning actual bodily harm; common assault; and two counts of stalk/intimidate intend fear physical harm.

He was refused bail and was to appear before Bourke Local Court last Wednesday.

The 55 year old male suffered lacerations and bruising to the face.

“I don’t understand how this has happened,” Debbie said.

Rachel and Dave were hoping to have heard from the Office of Liquor and Gaming by yesterday, however they had not had any

news at the time of this article going to print.

“It is really disappointing that a sledgehammer approach has been taken to an issue that could have been handled differently,” Dave said.

“We make every effort to abide by the laws of the land and run a responsible business.”

The Great Western Hotel management are currently trying to sort out licensing issues which date back 70 years and currently prevent entry to minors.

Council looking for constructive feedback about Ag industry Cobar Shire Council is looking for constructive feedback and ideas on how our local agricultural sector can be better represented, particularly in the area of tourism.

Council’s grants officer Brytt Moore was keen to run a survey after council had received some comments from the agricultural community that they felt they were under represented and that the focus was always on Cobar being a mining town.

“At Council we know mining is a massive part of what makes up Cobar, but we also know that we are surrounded by farming land.

“The community has commented on a number of occasions through various platforms (social media mostly) that mining is well represented, but that the Cobar Shire lacks the representation of the agricultural heritage and industries,” Brytt explained.

“Cobar Shire Council has a Community Enhancement Program (CEP) which, in short, lists the projects the community would like to see undertaken across the shire.

“In some ways, it is a wish list, however timeframes will be given to projects in a bid to provide some prioritisation of suggestions.

“This plan is then used to seek funding for priority projects.

“We have heard the agricultural community feels under-represented and we wanted to give the community the opportunity to let us know what they want to see, how they think we can improve this ‘gap’ within the Cobar Shire.”

She said the survey is a formal channel they can use to gather information, unlike comments on social media which are not formal and cannot be used as evidence, particularly

in the case of applying for grant funding.

Brytt said while some good ideas have come from their council staff brainstorming sessions, they can’t speak for the entire farming community.

“We hope that there will be a number of responses, with realistic ideas, innovative ideas even, something other towns haven’t done yet and that can be implemented in line with Council’s town beautification and strategic plans,” Brytt said.

As of Monday, 56 people had completed the online survey.

Brytt said while most responses were positive and constructive, about five per cent of responders had provided negative comments and offered little or no suggestions on how Cobar Shire could improve the representation

of their agricultural industries.

“I find this deflating and a shame, I say when given the opportunity, use it to the fullest!”

She said so far the response from the survey is divided with 30 per cent saying we should capitalise on mining as it’s something different that we have to offer, as opposed to surrounding agriculture communities that do not have mining as a draw card for tourists.

Brytt said she was pleased to see a number of great ideas put forward.

“They’ve offered some awesome ideas that we hadn’t thought of which is the reason why we put the survey out!”

Local business has a long history Dear editor, I have noted Stationery Essentials advertised their 1st Birthday celebrations last week with the current owners celebrating the first anniversary.

The business is however actually 15 years old on the 29th of this month. (The new owners took over the business from my family on August 5, last year.)

The stationery business has been in Cobar for 36 years and was originally started as ‘Pencraft’ and located in the old Commonwealth Bank building [now Enlightened Therapies].

In 1988, Rick and Yvonne Laing purchased the business and changed the name to Copper 6 Barton St

Two years later they moved the business to a newly renovated premises in Barton Street (where the dental surgery is now).

In 1992 Copper City Stationery was sold to Leo Sheehan and Trevor Buddle.

Later Trevor bought Leo out and moved the business to 9a Barton Street (now the CatholicCare office).

In 2005 Margaret Settree bought it and renamed it Stationery Essentials and it became a “bannered” member of Office Choice.

The business grew rapidly with the demands from the mining industry and local businesses and a new location was built onto what was the old Rural Bank.

This was opened in January 2009 and Stationery Essentials continues today in the same premises.

Stationery Essentials is a wonderful asset to the town.

I remember when we won the Regional Business Awards and the then president for regional businesses congratulated us on the corporate image and said how good this was for a small country town.

Over the years it has diversified into other areas complimenting their stationery and office supplies.

Cobar is very fortunate to have such a wonderful business right on their doorstep.

I hope the locals continue to keep this alive.

Councillors learn more on plans for museum upgrades

Students learn the law

Cobar High School’s Years 9 and 10 Commerce classes are currently studying Law in Action and last week had a visit from Cobar Police Senior Constable Lucas Hardy.

Senior Constable Hardy spoke about police powers and the law and answered students’ questions. Class teacher Krysti Neale said students were given a fascinating insight into the duties and responsibilities of NSW Police and all of the students were thoroughly engaged in the activity. ▪ Photo contributed

Last Thursday we held a Councillor Workshop with presentations on the Museum’s new exhibitions and upgrade project by Museum Curator, Kay Stingemore and Council’s Project Coordinator, Carly Hunter (which was presented by the General Manager), followed by a very busy workshop.

On Saturday we received some beautiful rain again and Burrendong Dam’s level is now at 34.6 per cent, which is fantastic to see.

Dogs alleged to have attacked cow Two stray hunting dogs are believed to have attacked and killed a cow on Saturday.

Police were called to the family’s home around 10.30am on Saturday following a report that two brown coloured hunting dogs had attacked their pet cow.

Police are appealing for public assistance to identify the owner of the dogs that were last seen in the vicinity of Railway Parade North.

Police have located one of the dogs that has been handed over to council.

No microchip identification was located.

Police advise the breed is similar to a Wolfhound-cross.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Cobar Police or CrimeStoppers.

Volunteers want to give back to the Cobar community

Lenny Fitton may not have been born in Cobar and while he spent the past 50 years living in a number of different towns, he has always thought of himself as a ‘Cobar boy’.

“I have lots of good memories of growing up in Cobar,” he said.

Lenny and his family moved to Cobar in the early 1950s where he grew up, went to school and later started his first job at the Post Office.

He moved away and earned his living as a publican for 27 years working for a couple of different breweries and then spent the last 10 years of his working life at a Bunnings store.

“It’s an Australian company and a great place to work,” he said.

Following his recent retirement, Len moved back to Cobar last year, bought a house and did some work on it.

This year he found he had some time on his hands so he’s decided to help others.

In addition to doing some odd jobs for any seniors who need a bit of hand about the house, Lenny’s also started volunteering at the Vinnies store.

He’s only been there about a month but already fellow Vinnies volunteer Bev O’Brien is calling him a “godsend”.

“He’s a quick learner and a great help,” Bev said.

“I just do whatever I’m told to do,” Lenny said.

In addition to working at Vinnies three days a week Lenny is also keen to become a Meals on Wheels volunteer.

“I just help people out where they need it. I don’t want any accolades,” he said.

“It keeps me busy every day of the week.”

Lenny also keeps himself busy researching his family tree and finding old photos relating to Cobar.

“I search online for them in museums and libraries.”

Lenny was thrilled to have found a photo of a local Cobar man in a trench in Korea during the war, which his family had never seen before.

“They were over the moon,” he said.

And that’s the same response he’s been getting from lots more locals who love Lenny’s Facebook posts of Cobar memories.

Kath O’Brien remembered for her creative talents Kathleen Mary O’Brien, known affectionately to all as Kath, and who lived most of her life in Cobar, passed away recently.

Kath died at the age of 97 in the Lilliane Brady Village.

Kath was born in Mossgiel on October 10, 1922 and the family moved to Cobar in about 1932.

She worked at Mrs Heap’s café near the Empire Hotel, where she met her future hus-

Murrin Bridge in lockdown after Melbourne visitor Residents in the nearby village of Murrin Bridge lined up for testing at a mobile COVID-19 testing station on Monday.

The community of approximately 70 people, which is currently undergoing a 14 day lockdown period, were offered the testing following a visit by a person from a Melbourne hot spot area last weekend.

The Murrin Bridge Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) said while an initial test has confirmed that the visitor was negative to COVID-19, they are still awaiting the results of a second all clear test.

“Being a small Aboriginal community we are more at risk due to the chronic diseases we face, please be responsible,” Murrin Bridge LALC advised their community.

“We need your help to do the right thing now.”

They also called for anyone who may have visited the community in the days immediately prior to the lock down on Monday August 10, to also self isolate until further notice.

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler threw his support behind the Murrin Bridge LALC’s decision to lockdown the community for 14 days.

“The Land Council have made this decision in the best interest of their community - and they have my full support,” Mr Butler said.

“The Land Council is working with the NSW Aboriginal Land Council, Aboriginal Affairs NSW and NSW Health to put a plan in place.

“All agencies are providing assistance to help community members take adequate precautions to limit the risk of transmission of COVID-19,” he said.

Mr Butler said assistance to made available to the community and would include: the provision of food and hygiene hampers to assist community members with isolation; sourcing of hand sanitiser and PPE and access to a mobile COVID-19 testing clinic.

She lived the rest of her life in Cobar and it was here that she and Tom raised their six children – Doreen, Jimmy, Mervyn, Dennis, Barry and Margaret.

At the time of her passing, Kath had 19 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 20 great-great grandchildren.

After being a stay-at-home Mum to raise the children, Kath later worked at Cobar Hospital.

After retiring she played bowls and won trophies in the Triples.

Kath was an excellent cook, as well as being talented at sewing, and made many of her children’s clothes, including debut dresses for her daughters Doreen, Margaret and her daughter-in-law Beverley O’Brien.

She could also turn her hand to knitting, lacework, tatting, embroidery, pottery, art, needlework of any kind, painting ceramics and cake decorating.

• The crew from ABC Television’s Back Roads show are in town this week filming a segment about Cobar and the people that live here. • Central North Police District are reminding locals to lock up their vehicles when unattended and don’t leave valuables in the car due to recent incidents of theft in Cobar and Lightning Ridge.

• Yesterday was an emotional day for many as it was the 54th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. The Vietnam War was Australia’s longest military involvement of the 20th Century. A total of 521 Australians were killed and 3,000 were wounded over the 10 years Australia was involved.

• Former local resident Rob Hunter has made the front cover of the September edition of Clay Target CTSN magazine after

More information can be found at ruralaid.org.au • Cobar Shire Council offered their apologies to residents last week who had experienced problems with their water pressure. Entangled tree roots had burst the feeder main from the filtration plant into town (near the Rugby Union Club) which necessitated for our town water to be supplied from the Green Tank storage facility, which may have caused some residents to experience a reduction in water pressure.

Council staff worked all last week to repair the feeder main and it was expected to be operational over the weekend, restoring normal water pressure.

Cobar to host Nyngan and Walgett teams in Round 5 Rugby fans will be able to get a close up look at the hybrid Nyngan Bulls/Cobar Camels 2020 team this Saturday when the Cobar Rugby Club hosts Walgett for Round 5 of the Western Plains Rugby competition.

The Nyngan side, bolstered this year with a few Cobar Camels players, is tracking well this season and recorded another good win last week at Warren over the Pumas.

Nyngan took the game 24-17 from their hosts.

Walgett will also be coming off a win after they trounced Bourke on Saturday in their Round 4 game at home 53-5.

The Senior Netball competition was barely affected by the bit of rain on Saturday afternoon and it certainly didn’t have an effect on the shooters’ accuracy with a massive 302 goals scored in the four matches.

All four of the Round 4 games were onesided affairs with Hot Shots finishing with a 63 point win over Gumnuts, 76-13.

Real Steel’s shooters also had their eye in to finish with a 62-7 victory over Mid Strength Merinos.

Divas continued their good run this season to finish with a 51-18 win over JKM on Saturday while Pumpettes bounced back from their loss last week to finish with a convincing 59-16 win this week over Sharpe Shooters.

Rain delays Ladies Championships for another week Once again rain disrupted last weekend’s golf competition including the first round of the Ladies 2020 Club Championships.

As a consequence this Saturday will now be played as Round 1 over 27 holes with Round 2, also 27 holes, moved to next Saturday in place of Rob’s C-Food Day (which has been cancelled due to COVID-19).

Like the previous week, Wednesday’s game was the only one to go ahead with six players on hand for the Par event.

A countback gave Ann Dunn the win over Jenny Stephenson after both ladies finished with a score of -5 in the tough conditions.

Geraldine Francisco placed third with -6.

Stephenson was the Nearest the Pin winner on the 8th hole for A Grade and Susan Goonrey was the best in B Grade.

If the weather forecast for the coming week is correct, all golf games should go ahead with no more rain on the horizon...fingers crossed. This week starts with a Par game today and on Friday the Vets Country Championships (Stroke and Stableford) will tee off.

Sunday is the annual Pink Day three person Stableford (raising money for breast cancer) so arrange your partners and outfits quickly for this event.——T’d Off

Yabbies champions

A leading try scorer

Rowdy Barton added another two tries to his season tally when his Under 10s side came up against South Dubbo in Round 5 of the Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League competition at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday. Rowdy once again backed up his good performance from last week where he scored four tries against Parkes Marists. Rowdy is definitely one little Rooster to keep an eye on this season.

Men’s Golf Championships cancelled again

For the second week in a row, rain curtailed another big weekend of golf.

While rain is always welcome in Cobar, the Men’s Golf committee members have been frustrated trying to fit the BRilliams Copper City Classic/Club championships into a reduced program.

A hastily convened meeting on Sunday decided the event will still go ahead but will be delayed until the October long weekend.

More cancellations are coming thick and fast with Rob’s C-Food Day, always a popular event planned for this Saturday, also cancelled this year, as has the Hillston Open which was to be held this Sunday.

The mid-week competition on Wednesday did go ahead with eight players enjoying the best golfing weather of the week.

Greg Clark, with 34 points had the best score, three shots clear of Scott Mayne and Peter ‘China’ Brien was a shot further back.

Nearest the Pin prizes were shared on the 3rd hole by Tim Turton and Piers Brown, and Brien won the 15th.

The 7th, 8th and 11th were not won.

The season’s Nearest the Pin competition is hotting up with Alec Fraser and Super-vet, Max Phillips, leading the way on 11.

The previous early leader Greg Clark has slipped to one shot back on 10, and ‘Big Daddy’ Stewart Fraser, Jay Egan and Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence are also all in the hunt on eight.

A mid-week comp will be played today.

Friday will be the annual Cobar Veterans Open tournament for both men and women.

Its an 18 hole event.

Saturday is the 6th Round of the Captain’s Trophy competition and will be played as a Stroke event.

Sunday is an individual Stableford event and the Trangie Open is also on this Sunday.

Roosterettes couldn’t match top of the table Swanettes The Cobar Roosterettes were well beaten 42-6 by a pacey Dunedoo Swanettes outfit at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday.

Going into Round 5 of the Castlereagh Ladies League Tag competition at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday, the Roosterettes knew it would be a tough match with the Dunedoo girls unbeaten this season.

Roosterettes co-coach Jay Egan, commenting after the game, said he was disappointed in the result after the girls had had a very good training session during the week.

Egan said he’d felt confident the side would put on a good show however they just didn’t perform on the day.

“We’ve got a few things to work on,” Egan said.

The well-drilled Swanettes took control of Saturday’s game from the outset and had the intention of keeping the Cobar side scoreless.

They were on track to do so after leading 24-0 at half time, however the Roosterettes rallied going into the second half and, after sustained pressure on their line, Jordan Warren crossed for a try (her first for the Roosterettes in her debut season).

Brianna Watson’s kick was on target and the Roosterettes closed the margin to 24-6.

Committed defence by the Roosterettes kept Dunedoo from further adding to their tally during that quarter.

The Swanettes however finished strongly and ran in three converted tries in the final 10 minutes to blow the score out to a 42-6 win.

Cobar’s Best and Fairest three points went to fullback Naomi Whitehurst, who once

again pulled off a number of try-saving tags: Jacobson earned one point. hard working Hannah Carroll picked up two Whitehurst was also named the side’s Playpoints; and team captain/co-coach Bianka ers’ Player.

Juniors kick off a big day of footy at Tom Knight Oval The Cobar Junior Roosters kicked off a big day of Rugby League action at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday when their four sides hosts South Dubbo teams prior to the senior Roosters taking on Dunedoo.

The Cobar Under 12s side continued their winning streak and trounced South Dubbo 18-8 on Saturday.

Hayden Seng opened the Roosters’ tally with a strong run in the opening stages of the match to score in the corner which was converted by Tim Eves to give the young Roosters an early 6-0 lead.

Nate Martin raced over for two tries and Zaiden Saunders also crossed for the Roosters to help them to their win.

Nate Martin, Jaxon Burke and Jack Rogers shared the Coach’s Award.

The Under 10s were beaten 30-16 by the South Dubbo visitors in their game.

Rowdy Barton led the scoring for Cobar with two tries and Billy George crossed for a try as well.

Conversions were landed by Rowdy Barton and Cohan Nicholson.

Charlie Nicholson, Rowdy Barton and Jaxon Waugh earned the Coach’s Awards.

The Under 14s match was a thriller with the lead changing throughout before South Dubbo finished as 26-18 winners.

Jayden Paul crossed twice for the Roosters and Tahj Foley and Brock Rossiter also touched down for tries with Tahj responsible for a conversion.

Jamal Eves and Toby Greenwood earned the Coach’s Awards.

The Under 16s game was also a thriller of a match as South Dubbo narrowly finished with a two points win, 30-28.

Zane Taylor dominated the scoreboard running in three tries for the Roosters with Fraser Talu and Reynold Mugugia also crossing for a try each.

Ryan Urquhart added eight points to their tally with his four conversions.

Jarrod Hilton, Reynold Mugugia and Zane Taylor were the recipients of the Coach’s Awards.

There was a good roll up for the Under 8s and Under 6s games on Sunday morning at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

After displaying improvement in their footy skills the Coach’s Awards this week went to Rogue Kilpatrick and Cameron Fennamore in the Under 6s age division and Sonny Stephens, Alfie Toomey, Riley Hunter, Eligh Ritter and Logan Fennamore in the Under 8s.

Close game for Championships Two close Bowls Championships games were played at the Golfie on Sunday with just one point the difference in the Singles game while three shots was the winning margin in the Triples match.

The Singles match was a great one to watch with two previous champions, Don Roberts and Tony Brown doing battle. Roberts narrowly finished as the 31-30 winner.

In the Triples match, Dean McLeod Jim Hayden Seng crossed for Cobar’s first try in the Roosters Under 12’s 18-8 win over Goonrey and Daniel Holt defeated the Roberts South Dubbo at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday morning. family team of Tyler, Kyle and Don 18-15.

Roosters win the Battle of the Birds The Cobar Roosters sent out a strong message that they are well and truly in the hunt for premiership honours in the 2020 Christie and Hood Castlereagh Rugby League competition when they scored an emphatic 36-18 win over the Dunedoo Swans on Saturday.

The win at Tom Knight Memorial Oval, in front of a good crowd, not only saw the Roosters claim outright second spot on the competition ladder but also sets up a blockbuster home game against competition front-

runners the Gilgandra Panthers this Saturday.

The early exchanges in the Battle Of The Birds saw the feathers fly as the two teams ripped in resulting in a Cobar player cooling his heels in the sin bin after just five minutes of play had elapsed.

Prior to that the home side had conceded a number of penalties which afforded the Swans good field position which they duly converted into points via a try to their hard running fullback, Nathan Orr, for a 4-0 lead.

The Roosters then began to get their attack in order and before half time centre Nathan McAndrew had speared over wide out, followed by fullback Tim Hillam grounding a well placed grubber kick from five–eight David Watson.

James Neyland nailed both conversions, to put the home side in front 12-8 at half time.

The momentum that the Roosters had built going into the break was not lost due to the interruption and in the second half they drew away from the Swans.

Roosters’ lock Loma Atua and secondrower Jack Govett scored doubles, all converted by Neyland for a final tally of 36, while for Dunedoo halfback Dan Lane scored and Orr added another try in an impressive performance to take the Swans total to 18.

First Grade captain David Watson praised his team for a good performance and acknowledged the debut of two Under 18s players, Johnny Best and Tyler Coughlan, who made First Grade appearances in Saturday’s win.

Cobar’s Best and Fairest points were shared between Atuau (3), Hillam (2) and Jarrad Whitty (1).

The Swans did a good job on bottling up Whitty, Cobar’s dynamic hooker, and while he was not on the scorer’s list he played a strong role in much of the Rooster’s attack.

The 23 year old is expected to once again be a key player for the Roosters in their Round 6 match against the visiting Gilgandra Panthers this Saturday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

In the other match of the round at Binnaway the Bombshells got home in a thriller, winning the hard fought contest against the Coonamble Bears 23 to 22.
