The counting Cobar hosts Far West group continues The outcome of the Cobar Shire Council by-election to elect one councillor should be known and declared by next Monday. NSW Electoral Commission Returning Officer for Cobar Shire Council’s by-election, Vanessa Reschke said it’s been a busy week for her staff carrying out Progressive Scrutiny on the 435 Postal Votes they received this past week. “The total number of Postal Votes issued for Cobar Local Government Area was 2,810,” Mrs Reschke reported. “So far 920 have been accepted, 91 rejected with the total number scrutinised 1,011. “There have been 651 votes counted from Pre-Poll and Polling places and, with the 435 votes ready for scrutiny for the second progressive count, we have in the vicinity of 700 electors that have not returned their Postal Vote, voted early or on election day.” Mrs Reschke said the final date for collection of Postal Votes is this Friday. “We will do a final check of the post office box and then complete the final count on Friday night ready for the Declaration of Preferences and a Declaration of Results from Monday.” Mrs Reschke said the process for counting at this election is taking a bit longer than election counting from past years as all Postal Votes firstly are required to undergo a complete scrutiny to see if they meet the NSW Electoral Commission’s criteria. For it to be a valid vote, the voting form needs to be completed and the associated paperwork must also be signed, witnessed and dated on or before the date of the election.
