Much debate over economic resiliency report Cobar Shire Councillors were concerned with some of the findings reported by the Balmoral Group in their final economic resiliency report tabled at the Ordinary Council Meeting last week. There was some debate by councillors at the meeting over the information and recommendations presented in the report and they have called for further discussions to be carried out at a Council workshop before the report goes out to the public for comment. Cr Janine Lea-Barrett said she found “aspects of it are certainly eye-raising” but she said she did support it. Cr Jarrod Marsden said he didn’t agree “with parts of it”, “specifically that we embrace FIFO/DIDO” which was one of the recommendations from the Economic Resiliency Report prepared by the Balmoral Group. Cr Marsden said putting it out to the public now would “in some way shape or form show that we are endorsing it” he said. Grant Leslie, from the Balmoral Group, said their advice and suggested strategies were based on research they had conducted along with extensive consultation with the business and general community, FIFO and DIDO workers and former residents of Cobar. “Our team is very aware that some of our strategies will be difficult to implement and will take time and investment, however we believe that we must present the findings of our research honestly and without influence,” Mr Leslie said in the report. Cobar asks R U OK?

The Cobar & Districts Rugby Union Club held an R U OK? awareness event for mental health at their home game on Saturday at Ailsa Fitzsimmons Memorial Oval. Pictured are Kirsty Smith and Jody McCabe from the Western NSW Primary Health Network who gave players and spectators some tips and tools on how to start an R U OK? conversation and also handed out merchandise and themed cupcakes. R U OK? is a national initiative that aims to remind everyone that every day is the day to ask “Are you ok?’ and support those struggling with life’s ups and downs. “It’s not weak to speak up,” Jody, a suicide prevention care coordinator said. “Your life matters.”
