Roosters dominate

The Cobar Roosters First Grade side put on a dominate display at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday in front of a good crowd to record a big 52-12 win over the Coonamble Bears.

The game was barely five minutes in when fullback Ash Davies crossed for first points after good lead up work by Ben Griffiths who broke away down the sideline before finding Davies in support.

Captain/coach Thomas Plater’s conversion from in front was an easy one to give the home side an early 6-0 lead.

Zane Taylor’s unstoppable attitude was evident in Cobar’s second try and, despite having three defenders on him, they proved to be not up to the task as Taylor pushed over to score.

Soon after Tim Hillam broke the try line dragging a couple of defenders with him.

Hillam looked like he was wrapped up but he found a way to get the ball down by stretching out over the back of his head to score. s second successful conversion put Cobar ahead 16-0.

By that stage the Bears were fired up with frustration at their inability to get themselves into the game. They were making a raft of mistakes, the penalties were going against them and it was from one of those penalties that Davies crossed for his second try of the match.

Roosters Reggies bring in the crowd

The Roosters Reggies can take credit for pulling in a big crowd at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday however it was their Gilgandra opposition who had more cause to celebrate after they won 32-12.

The new Cobar Reserve Grade side was made up of recently retired players, long retired players (including some who haven’t played for more than 20 years) and some younger players, and what they lacked in ability, they more than made up for in enthusiasm.

The Christie & Hood Castlereagh League kicked off its first game of the five round Reserve Grade competition on Saturday.

The competition is designed to get more participation throughout the region, and the Cobar team line up covers a very broad range of experience and hair colours.

Captain/coach Chris Deighton said the team has been doing a serious amount of training which is starting to show with only one way to go from here.

The game’s referee Rob McKechnie laid down the laws while the coin toss was in progress.

Both sides were there for a great game and memories to follow.

It wasn’t until close to half time that the Bears found a gap in the Roosters’ defence and they made the most of an overlap on the right wing to score. The successful sideline kick narrowed the margin to 14 points, 20-6.

Cobar however took back the ascendancy and Taylor “walked in” for his second try from a quick play of the ball on Coonamble’s line.

Griffiths converted Taylor’s try just before half time and the margin at the break was 26-6.

Cobar went on to double the score in the second half with Jayden Paul (2), Frazer Talu, Lochlan Ford and Gerald Mackey touching down for more tries for Cobar.

Griffiths landed another three more conversions to take his tally to four for the match and Plater kicked two goals.
