Conditions were perfect for big scores

It seems conditions were perfect for scoring tries in the Open Mixed Touch competition last Thursday night at Ward Oval with a whopping total of 86 points scored in the four matches played in Round 2.

The biggest scorers of the night were DC & C Barracudas’ female players, Brianna Watson with eight tries and Aisha Schofield, with six. With female points doubled, between the pair of them they scored 28 of their team’s total of 35 points for the night.

The DC & C Barracudas definitely outclassed the newbies, Gold Bars, winning 35-3. Will Munro, who scored twice for Gold Bars, earned the match’s Best & Fairest three points.

Team mate Troy Knight scored their other try and two B&F points and one point was earned by DC & C Barracudas’ Ash Davies.

Another one-sided game was played between J&K Butchers and the Rusty Snails, with the Butchers winning 13-4.

Nine from the Butchers scored tries with Kai Taylor scoring a double.

Taylor, along with team mate Molly Carter and Jason Hampel from the Rusty Snails shared in the game’s B&F points.

Kai Greenwood led the scoring for the Phat Athletes in their 15-8 win over Haymans Snowflakes.

Greenwood crossed four times with Zoë Egan also contributing four points to Phat Athletes’ total with her two tries.

Jaxon Burke led the scoring for Haymans Snowflakes with five tries for the game.

Records broken

St John’s School held their annual swimming carnival at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool on Friday with Mackillop (Green) finishing as the overall winners. There was some great sportsmanship displayed and two very long standing school records were broken by Clair Cousins, who finished the day as the 11 years girl champion.

Clair broke the 50m Freestyle record previously set by Michaela Campbell 27 years ago with a new time of 36.73 seconds as well as the 50m Butterfly record (previously set by Caroline Harland in 2008) with a new time of 43.94 seconds.

The other champions from the carnival were: 11 Years Boy Tommy George; Senior Girl Harpa Martin; Senior Boy Talas Burke; Junior Girl Kasalia Fakahua; and Junior Boy Cooper Trudgett.

between Red Hot Chilli Steppers and DJW Dingoes, with the final margin a difference of four points.

Red Hot Chilli Steppers had a one point advantage at half time, 6-5, before they took control of the second half to eventually finish with an 11-7 win.

Kayla Hasson’s four tries (worth eight points) helped her Red Hot Chilli Steppers side to the win and earned her the game’s B&F three points.

Also earning B&F points were DJW Dingoes’ Tyler Coughlan and Axel Fairfull.

First club shoot

There was a field of 14 shooters for the Cobar Clay Target Club’s first shoot of 2023 on Sunday.

The first of four events was a 20 Target Double Barrel shoot with Peter Hosie having his eye in early to record a possible (perfect score) of 20/20 to win AA Grade.

In A Grade, Brad Kendrick finished as the winner with 18/20, Luke Scales was first in B Grade with 19/20 and Julianne Foster won C Grade with 18/20.

In the 25 Target Single Barrel event, there was a tie in AA Grade with Kevin Hatch and Bryan Manns both finishing with 23/25, A Grade’s winner was Matt Harland (21/25); B Grade’s win went to Scales (24/25) and the C Grade winner was Jim Manns (18/25).

Apart from Hatch, the winners were the same in the 30 Target Handicap event with AA Grade won by Bryan Manns with 26/30, A Grade Harland (26/30), B Grade Scales (28/30) and C Grade Jim Manns (26/30).

The final event of the day was the 10 Pair Double Rise with Hatch claiming the win in AA Grade with 19/20, Harland cleaned up to win A Grade with 14/20, Dick Tulloh had the win in B Grade with 17/20 and Foster claimed the C Grade prize with 12/20.

Quiet on course

There were only five hardy souls who turned up to play in the Men’s summer golf competition on Saturday while nobody showed on Sunday.

There was nothing in the scores from Saturday’s field of Brien Obray, Steve Manns, Peter Brien, Brad Bannister and Greg Clark to suggest any real form except that Bannister’s 35 points made him a clear eight point winner.

There were a number of discussions at the recent annual general meeting relating to the 2023 season including renewing the tee markers around the course; introducing penalties for slow play; a proposed experimental rule relating to preferred lies on the fairway; and working bees. Out of Bounds
