Newbies welcomed
Many of the 16 participants who took to the greens on Friday evening at the Golfie for Twilight Bowls were much welcomed ‘newbies’ to the game.
The experienced bowlers were, as always, delighted to take them under their wings with the emphasis being on having loads of fun.
After the Spider event’s airborne tumbles subsided, Tom McKeown was declared the winner.
The winners for the evening were Karen Daly and Greg Clark with a +19 over Steve Manns and Peta Zazoniuk.
Daly and Clark also won the $810 Jackpot prize. (Every winning team has a chance to win the jackpot. The Golfie random draw machine was set from 1 to 25 and their winning margin of 19 was one of the four numbers that came up.)
Travis Buckman soared under the mighty gifted wings of Narelle Kriz and the pair finished with a +14 win against Tony Polack and fledgling Jo-Louise Brown.
There was another good turn out for social bowls on Sunday with two games of triples and two pairs games contested.
Many players commented on how ‘true’ the green was running and with a strong wind to contend with, there were often multiple bowls ‘fence sitting’!
Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey was on fire! His ability to steal a shot from his opponents when they were initially up three shots on quite a few occasions was amazing. Skeet and partner Helen Boddy won the day by +13.
On rink 5 Peter ‘China’ Brien and Glenn ‘Kiwi’ Ratcliffe’s +8 win secured them runners-up glory for the day after they beat Tony Polack and David ‘Ooze’ Knight.
Daly, wife Karen, and Peta Zazoniuk finished with a +4 win over Hudson’s team of David Thomas and Darryl Jermyn.
Choosing between Polack, Knight and David Schofield’s wrong biases was a tough call for George the Giraffe selectors this week.
After much deliberation, it was decided that Schofield’s delivery was the most impressive. The Second
Against the trend
There’s a theory that regular competition is good for athletes but that necessarily can’t be said for the members of the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club.

Going off past results, it seems that a few weeks break away from competition is actually a good thing for them.
Peter Christen returned to the Cobar pool after a long break and picked up plenty of the points on offer last Tuesday.

Christen placed third in three events last week which will greatly improve his chances in the Yabbies’ 2022/2023 point score competition.
The ever consistent Bill Fugar also added points to his season tally with a win in the 30 metres handicapped freestyle swim.

Fugar finished with the best time of 0.03 seconds off his nominated time with John Claus just behind in second spot on 0.06.
Christen with 0.07 seconds, and Todd Fugar also on 0.07 seconds, tied for third place.
Murray Harland showed the way in the 50 metres swim winning with 0.10 seconds off his time. Chris Powell was second on 0.18 and Christen had 0.22 seconds for third place.
Dave Mexted took line honours in the 100m swim after finishing within 0.28 seconds of his nominated time. Claus was second on 0.31 and Christen was just behind in third place on 0.44.
