Funding flows
Work on the business case for the Nyngan to Cobar pipeline project can now begin with a contribution of $200,000 from the NSW Government announced last week under the Government’s Critical Drought Initiative Program. This latest funding is in addition to $10 million provided for works completed in 2017. Under the program, the NSW Government will work with Cobar Shire Council and the Cobar Water Board to deliver the required Business Case, the first stage in the project. Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier and for Water Infrastructure Sam Farraway said providing the required funding and support will help secure a safe water supply. “Cobar was one of the hardest hit towns in the recent drought and with the pipeline providing the only reliable connection to a water source, it’s essential we get to work securing Cobar’s water supply for now and into the future,” Mr Farraway said. “Thirty kilometres of the 130km Nyngan to Cobar pipeline was recently replaced thanks to $10 million funding from the NSW Government’s Water Security for Regions program. “However, the remaining 100km of pipeline and assets are ageing and in desperate need of an upgrade.” Minister for Water, Property and Housing Melinda Pavey said while the recent rains have boosted local water supply across regional NSW, now is not the time to be complacent. The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment has received grant funding of $1 million towards the project from the Commonwealth Government. DPIE is providing the remaining $200,000 towards the estimated cost of $1.2 million to complete the business case, a vital first stage in the process.

Talking politics at the pub
State Member for Barwon Roy Butler was in town last week and he caught up with a few locals for a chat at the Empire Hotel. Some of the items that were raised with Mr Butler during his visit included grant opportunities, the lack of a community transport service, insufficient housing, the inability to attract people to Cobar, health services concerns, and the upcoming Local Government elections. Mr Butler also met with councillors, looked through the recently opened Cobar Miner’s Memorial, did a behind the scenes tour of the museum, checked out the Girl Guides’ new hall and received an update on the progress of the 2022 Running On Empty festival. Mr Butler is pictured above at far right chatting on Thursday night at the Empire Hotel with Ann -Marie and Kevin Murphy, Nicholas Brown and Steven Neate.
