The Cleveland Orchestra Franz Welser-Möst, conductor MOZART Symphony No. 41 (“Jupiter”) STRAUSS An Alpine Symphony Richard Strauss was an avid outdoorsman, and An Alpine Symphony is the vivid musical depiction of a day spent climbing an Alpine mountain, replete with scenic meadows, a dazzling view from the summit, and a sudden, violent storm. It is one of the most spectacular – and spectacularly challenging to perform – orchestral tone poems ever written, and it employs a massive orchestra of some 125 musicians.

[Popular culture note: in 1981, a recording of An Alpine Symphony made with the Berlin Philharmonic became the first compact disc pressing.]

SEP 27 — Sunday, live telecast begins at 3:00 p.m. broadcast on WVIZ/PBS and WCLV Classical 104.9 FM Dedicating the Phase One opening of Case Western Reserve University’s Maltz Performing Arts Center at The Temple–Tifereth Israel.

Broadcast live on television from the newly renovated Silver Hall, the event is also the official opening performance of Violins of Hope Cleveland, a unique community collaboration of concerts, education programs, exhibitions, and learning events. This collaboration is centered around a group of Holocaust-era violins from around the world, some with the Star of David on the back and others with names and dates inscribed within the instrument. These extraordinary instruments serve as testaments to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of music to lift hearts in even the most horrific of circumstances.

This event is presented by Case Western Reserve University in collaboration with Violins of Hope Cleveland.

Messiaen was devout, and his music shines with his embrace of God and creation in a way that almost seems evangelistic. Verdi’s masterpiece of sacred music, while overtly religious, is more conflicted, more ambiguous.

Todd Wilson, organ Celebrate Halloween with this classic 1923 silent film, with the accompaniment improvised live by acclaimed organist Todd Wilson. Quasimodo (Lon Chaney Sr.), an inarticulate, deformed human being who is the bell ringer of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, sacrifices his life to save Esmeralda (Patsy Ruth Miller), a Gypsy girl who once befriended him, from the hunchback’s evil master. The fully improvised accompaniment features Severance Hall’s mighty Norton Memorial Organ, considered one of the finest concert organs ever built.

When the nation of Israel was founded in 1948, the Palestine Symphony became the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the country’s national orchestra. Today, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra is an eloquent voice for peace as well as Israel’s powerful cultural ambassador.
