First-year students experience Pioneer Passage F

or the first time since arriving on campus, first-year students gathered together on Tuesday morning as the class of 2021. Before the more than 1,500 students—decked out in red shirts—formed a large “DU” at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, they took part in Pioneer Passage, the annual orientation ceremony for new Pioneers.

Pioneer Passage was an opportunity for students and their parents to hear for the first time from Chancellor Rebecca Chopp. Her address to students focused on how individual stories — or events — shape our lives. She discussed different events happening in our world, like Hurricane Harvey and the recent tensions in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Chopp talked about the impact that exploring southwestern Colorado this summer has had on her own story. She also talked about the stories that have shaped the University of Denver since its founding in 1864.

“Your journey here is to learn and contribute to the stories of others and to write your own story, interlaced with this community and this world,” Chopp said to the students. “In several years, you will be a DU alum. You, too, will create and found DU with your stories.”

The theme of “stories” was shaped by a summer-reading assignment given to all incoming first-year

and transfer students: J.D. Vance’s “Hillbilly Elegy.” The bestselling book is Vance’s account of his troubled upbringing in Appalachia. The book was selected for DU’s common reading program, One Book One DU. In addition to reading the book, students were asked to respond to a prompt that will be incorporated into this week’s orientation activities and into first-year seminars.

Students and their parents also heard on Tuesday from Gregg Kvistad, provost and executive vice chancellor; Lili Rodriguez, vice chancellor of campus life and inclusive excellence; Todd Rinehart, interim vice chancellor of enrollment; and Morgan Smith and Darylann Aragon, incoming undergraduate student government president and vice president, respectively.

Before leaving, Chopp offered students three tips for beginning their “DU Story.” She told students to ask questions. “No one expects you to know everything,” she said.

“Learn as many stories as you can.

Question everyone and everything, but do so from a place of genuine curiosity and openness. Ask to learn, not merely to express your own point of view.”

Second, she told students to keep their balance. “Keep your balance when you are learning to navigate this place,” Chopp said. “Take things in, but don’t get overwhelmed. Go at

your own pace.”

Her final message was to connect and engage with others in the DU community. “I suggest you connect with at least three individuals: a person who seems like yourself, a person who is different but you

trust, and a faculty, coach, or staff member who can mentor you and help you begin to navigate DU,” Chopp said. “Listen to their stories, tell yours [and] learn to connect through your stories.”

Best places to study at DU

W

ith the new school year just around the bend, it’s time to start considering what you might need to do to get those amazing grades we are all desperately hoping to achieve. In all seriousness though, whether you are an incoming freshman or a few months from graduating, finding the right place to study is essential to making the most of your academic time at DU. One thing to note is that finding the right place to study is hard. You have to decide what kind of atmosphere suits your needs. Some like places that let them really spread out my work and focus, places that aren’t too loud or too busy but are less stuffy than a library. Others like complete and total silence, while their friends may love loud places.

This guide will give you a rundown of all the best places to study, you should take a look around campus and see what works best for you.

The Daniel Felix Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science is home to several awesome study spots. It is located on the southern end of campus which makes it a great place to study if you have a class near by and don’t want to sit in the library.

On the bottom floor is WOW Cafe. This is a great place to

study if you want some good food (and free soda refills), a little background noise and a wide open area for studying.

On the same floor, just to the right of WOW, is a huge room full of comfy chairs, dry erase boards, conference tables, TV monitors and more power outlets than you could possibly know what to do with.

This is a great place for working on group projects. There is a little background noise but it is nice and open, and most importantly, it is usually full of computer science, engineering and math geniuses who can lend a helping hand with your more difficult STEM based classes.

Another great on campus building for studying is the Driscoll Student Center. Since it is located in a more central area on campus, it is a perfect place to go in between classes.

Jazzman’s is a great little coffee shop located on the second floor of Driscoll North. Jazzman’s is quiet except for the soft jazz playing in the background. It has an array of seating options, like couches, a computer bar, small cafe tables and one large conference style table, which gives students several different types of atmospheres. Even though Jazzman’s closes at 5 p.m., it is a great (even quieter) place to study after hours.

Driscoll is also home to the, under utilized, Driscoll Underground. Located just past the Subway on the bottom floor of Driscoll North, Driscoll Underground is a spacious and quiet rec area. The nice part about this space is that there are rarely more than a couple other students there at one time. Driscoll Underground is accessible all day and is away from most of the Driscoll foot traffic which definitely helps to cut down on unwanted distractions.

One extremely popular off campus study spot is Kaladi Coffee Roasters on Evans. This little coffee house is always busy, but they offer delectable coffee and an inviting, relaxed atmosphere. If you like to study with friends, this is definitely the place to be.

Despite all these other great options, can never forget how productive studying in Anderson Academic Commons (AAC), our library, can be. Not only is AAC located in the middle of campus, but there is a wide array of studying environments readily available.

Depending on your learning style, Anderson has three different floors, all with different noise levels. The bottom floor is so quiet that you need not worry about distractions.

The main floor has a coffee shop for students who want to relax

while they work, math and language centers for assisted learning, giant booths that are good for private learning (in a social climate) and a media center, computer lab and a tech center to help make sure you have all the resources you need.

Finally the top floor is much quieter than the main floor but not nearly as silent as the first floor which gives students a happy medium between the two. Up here there are also some great private study rooms which are perfect for either group studying or if you just really like to spread out and hunker down for a day of private study.

And finally, it is important to remember that not everyone likes to study in a coffee shop or a library.

Sometimes the best place to study is in your own room where you can relax and stay up until 4 a.m. if need be. For some people the familiarity of their own dorm or apartment makes them feel like they have full control over their environment.

You can determine how loud it is and who you study with. You can study whenever you get the time and without the worry of getting kicked out because the building is closing. Studying in your own room is studying 100% on your own terms. Just remember to study and not watch Netflix.

AUTUMN OFFERS A SPECTACULAR FILM LINEUP W

ith the start of school and cool autumn nights, the theatre beckons all with a thrilling fall lineup. After a heavy week of studying, a night at the movies is the perfect way to take your mind off your work and relax. Luckily, Denver has a wide variety of moviegoing options for students, with many theatres offering enticing discounts for those with a college ID. Whether you head to the eccentric Landmark Mayan or to one of Denver’s many updated and luxurious theatres, this collection of sure-fire fall releases will undoubtedly put the student mind at ease.

The most anticipated film of the season, “Blade Runner 2049” (Oct. 6), is expected to ascend new heights in the sci-fi genre just as the original “Blade Runner” did in 1982. Set three decades after

its predecessor, the film boasts a visionary, neo-noir aesthetic entirely of its own. Ryan Gosling (“Drive”) stars as an LAPD blade runner seeking Rick Deckard who is played by the premier “Blade Runner” star Harrison Ford.

Although many sci-fi fanatics initially expressed apprehension towards a sequel of the cult classic, the fear quickly dissipated and has been replaced by a frenzy of excitement and impatience for the film’s release.

Acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan”) is known for his melancholic, muted tones and emotionally disturbed characters, and this fall’s “Mother!” (Sep. 15)does not break away from the pack. This psychological thriller centers around a newly married couple who must open their home to a pair of unexpected visitors.

With startling performances from Jennifer Lawrence (“Silver Linings

Playbook”) and Michelle Pfeiffer (“The Wizard of Lies,”) this autumnal thriller is sure to have a strong presence during this year’s awards season.

“Battle of the Sexes” (Sep. 22) is a fresh, heartening film that honors a pioneering voice in the fight for gender equality. Emma Stone (“La La Land”) stars as Billie Jean King, a champion in women’s tennis who spoke out for women’s rights in more ways than one, the most prominent example being her match against chauvinistic tennis pro, Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell “The Big Short.”) In 1973, at the height of the women’s movement, Riggs challenged King to a match in order to prove that men would always be superior to women. King won the match in three straight sets, earning a victory for female athletes and women across the country. With two of today’s leading comedic actors and a story that

is as pertinent as ever, “Battle of the Sexes” is a must-see.

There is truly nothing better than a great murder mystery. This season, actor and director Kenneth Branagh (“Cinderella”) delivers a playful and modern rendering of a flawless classic. “Murder on the Orient Express” (Nov. 10) is based on the 1930’s novel by the Queen of Mystery, Agatha Christie. The film’s illustrious cast includes Johnny Depp (“Pirates of the Caribbean,”) Willem Dafoe (“The Grand Budapest Hotel,”) Judi Dench (“Tulip Fever”) and Daisy Ridley (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”)

When a passenger is murdered on the Orient Express, everyone is suspected and who better to take on such a perilous case than Christie’s notorious leading detective, Hercule Poirot played by Branagh.

This film possesses all the ingredients for a box-office success.

THE COMMUTER SURVIVAL GUIDE T

o get through the horrendous busy work and immature drama in high school, I would often fantasize about what my life would be like in college. My expectations were typical and superficial, I assumed I’d reinvent myself, meet people left and right and live in the dorms. I even had a Pinterest board filled with “room-inspo,” However, that was not my reality.

Choosing DU was not a decision I took lightly. I knew the quarter system would involve a steep learning curve on my part, and the cost of attending a private school would be an investment that—as a first-generation student and the oldest daughter of three— meant I had to be at least 93% certain of what I was doing. No pressure. After much deliberation, sacrificing my dorm-life fantasy in exchange for a university with more opportunities for someone like myself felt like the right way to go.

Of course, my experience as a commuter student does not constitute what everyone’s experience will be like nor is this meant to

disregard dorm life—my hope is that this will help other incoming commuters, who may feel secluded from campus life, realize that their situation is not a disadvantage at all.

Let’s start off the simple stuff that one may look over.

Coffee or anything that’ll assist you to stay awake will be your most loyal friend. This is especially the case if you end up with in an 8 a.m. (which will be an even earlier morning for you if you include travel time.)

Depending on how far one may be from campus, keeping yourself entertained or productive during your commute is key, in my opinion, for maintaining your sanity. Besides listening to a killer playlist, which The Clarion has many recommendations to help get that started; a good podcast is also ideal brain fuel that can also create great conversation starters.

A simple Google search on “podcast recommendations” can help facilitate the search for something to match your interests. My personal favorites are NPR’s “How I Built This”—which focuses on innovators and their stories on how

they’ve created their now famous businesses—and “Switched on Pop”—which analyzes pop music from a musicology perspective.

Allowing yourself time to get to campus is a huge stress relief that you’ll thank yourself for in the long run. I used to want to get to campus immediately before class and leave right after my final class. My schedule with class and my off-campus job was so tightknit that I did not allow myself the time to study in the library, get some lunch or join a club. I was a recluse that first year and, honestly, it did lead me to doubt my decisions.

My sophomore year was significantly better because of the amount of time I allotted myself to stay on campus. I had the privilege of finding a job at DU which required me to understand the happenings of my university. I also joined The Clarion, which has been my best decision so far, for I reunited with my love for writing and journalism whilst meeting cool opinionated people with similar passions.

Doing that extra research to find something to be a part of

and giving myself that time to get involved was a key way for me to remove any limits that I placed on myself to think that I was incapable to enjoying my time on campus.

For any student who is new to this experience, it’s important to understand that being a commuter is only a downside if one sees it as such. Classmates living on campus may not understand the situation—so if one automatically phrases it as a negative then they’re going to look down on the situation. This will consequently make you believe that being a commuter is a burden. But, honestly, there is no right way to have a successful college experience.

It’s important to understand that, by commuting, you are saving roughly $12,000 a year, you’re finding your way around the city and you are granting yourself the gift of stepping back and not having to deal with classmates 24/7. Soon by junior and senior year, everyone will be doing some sort of traveling to campus and then you’ll be one step ahead of the game.

Tips on transitioning to life in the Mile High City A

s many as 67% of Pios are not Colorado natives, and even fewer are from the Denver area. One of the biggest challenges an incoming student may face their first year is learning the new city around them. The move away from home can be quite shocking, especially for students from smaller cities or towns.

Luckily, Pios receive an RTD pass at no extra cost that allows them to use the public transit system for free. This pass proves to be helpful when adjusting to Denver. With reliable and rapid public transit, an app that tracks all buses and light rails and a station right next to campus, incoming students can explore Denver easily. Go to a show at DCPA, treat a friend to a birthday lunch on 16th Street or go to Union Station to study. After traveling and familiarizing oneself with the big city, returning to the DU station helps make DU feeling more like home.

On a smaller scale, sometimes all it takes to adjust to the new city is to find similarities to home. Students may find a religious service to attend off campus with a friend or volunteer at an organization similar to before.

Since DU is in a residential area,

there are many restaurants to enjoy, parks to get in some exercise, places of worship to attend and public schools at which to volunteer and learn more about the University neighborhood.

Another way to feel more comfortable around the direct University neighborhood is to go grocery shopping. Even though Safeway is right down Evans and can hardly be considered leaving campus, it is an easy reminder that there is life outside of the college bubble and a good way to see people other than professors and peers.

Finally, make friends with a native from the Denver Metro Area. They likely will be a valuable resource—suggestions and helpful tips galore.

So, make time to discover all of the fun parts of the Mile High City, and make it a place that excites you. Enjoy student discounts wherever you go. And if you are itching to be back home, RTD extends as far as Denver International Airport.

here is a reason why big things like TV shows and blockbuster movies and anticipated novels hit during the summer when audiences are more rapt than usual thanks to the leisurely nature of the season. For entertainment companies, it is a time to capitalize on the bored and sweaty summer demographic, and for that demographic, it is a time to capitalize on the excuse of staying in because of the heat. It feels unfair to say “thus, ‘Game of Thrones’ (GoT),” but thus, “Game of Thrones.”

I am pained to concede that I have not watched GoT. I have a lot of lame excuses about why I haven’t—I’ll spare you them now but am happy to discuss any time. We are living in an era when obsessiveness about books and movies and TV runs high, spurred on by things like Comic-Con and social media and a generally hysterical populace, and I, too, get massively obsessed with things. This includes, just recently, a pseudo-obsession with GoT which again, I have not seen.

I am a great lover of TV and also of medieval fantasy stories, and there was already so much GoT condensation floating around in the muggy air that I couldn’t help but breathe a lot of it in. So, all summer I felt like I was part of the glee of a new season of a hit

show even when I pretty much wasn’t at all.

Like the actual obsession of an actual GoT fan, my faux-obsession lingers now that the season has wrapped up. The natural thing to do would be to buy the DVDs on Amazon and watch the thing, but it’s not so simple. Suddenly we are facing the end of summer and the return to the frenzy of the school year, and it is the time of year when most students feel like they won’t have time for new shows or book series until winter break. It’s not a good feeling.

But we could all use reminding that that doesn’t have to be true. The next few months are sure to be frenetic ones, but there should always be time to spare for indulgence of imagination. It is a lesson I learn again every fall.

Read a book while you wait for the light rail on the weekend. Sacrifice half an hour of sleep to finish your day by watching something that will make you excited to wake up in the morning. When you have something to let your mind wander to in between classes or friends or exams, campus won’t feel so small. And that is my justification for watching GoT during the school year.

Stay obsessed, kids.
