Mental Health and Wellbeing POLICY (2022-2023)

Introduction:

At TCSI, we aim topromotepositivementalhealthandwellbeingfor every memberof our school community.We pursue this aimusing bothuniversal,whole school approaches and specialized,targetedapproaches aimedat vulnerablestudents

Aims:

• Promotepositivementalhealthin all staffand students

• Increase understandingandawareness of commonmentalhealth issues

• Alertstaff to early warningsigns of mentalillhealth

• Provide supportto staffworking with young people withmentalhealthissues

• Provide supportto studentssufferingmentalillhealth and theirpeers and parents/carers

This policy alsosupports andworks in conjunctionwith the Behaviourpolicy and Child Protectionand Safeguardingpolicy.

Mentalhealth and wellbeing affecthow we feel, how we thinkand how we behave. All children and youngpeople need to:

• Be able toconnect with othersby participatingingroups andteams

• Know they are capable andable to achieve

• Know they count in their world and can contributetotheircommunity

• Know they have courage and can manage risksappropriately

The mentalhealthof childrenand young people, adults in school,parentsand carersand the wider whole school communitywill impacton all areasof development,learning, achievementand experiences.

In line with our commitmenttoChild Protectionand Student Wellbeing,we recognizethat childrenhave a fundamentalrightto be protectedfrom harm and thatstudentscannot learn effectivelyunlessthey feel secure We thereforeaim to provide a schoolenvironment which promotesself-confidence,afeelingof self-worthand the knowledge that students’ concerns will be listenedto and acted upon. • To keep records ofallreportedseriousconcerns

• To makeexternalrecommendationswhereappropriateandpossible

Senior Leaders

• To ensure the health,safety andwelfare of all children inthe school

• To implementtheschool mentalhealthandwellbeing policy consistently throughoutthe school, and to reportto the board, when requested, on the effectivenessof the policy.

• To implementthepolicy by supportingstaffinapplyingthe policyconsistently.

• To overseerecords of all reportedseriousconcerns.

Parents

• To share relevantinformationwithschool regardinganyconcerns or issues that may have an impacton the student’swellbeingin school

• To supportthe schoolby followingadvice fromstaff in school

School nurse/doctor

• To work closelywith students,parents, carersand staff, offeringsupportand advice on a range of medicalissues

• Play a vital rolein children’sdevelopment,carryingoutimmunizationand screeningprogrammes,managingmedicalconditionsand acting as a point of contact on child protectionissues

• Maintainaccuraterecordsof all supportgiven and share informationofany disclosuresmade with the relevantstaff

Procedures

The mostimportantrole school staffplayis toshare any concernswith the Safeguarding Team and followthe proceduresput.

Confidentialityandinformationsharing

• Studentsmay choose to confide in a memberof school staffif they are concerned about their own welfareor that of a peer.

• Studentsshould be made aware that it may not be possiblefor staffto offercomplete confidentiality

• If a memberof staffconsidersa studentis at seriousrisk of causingthemselves harm, then confidentialitycannotbe kept.

• It is importantnot to make promisesof confidentialitythatcannot be kept even if a student puts pressureon a memberof staff to do so.

• Confidentialitywillbe maintainedwithinthe boundariesof safeguardingthestudent.

• Parents/carersareencouragedtodiscloseto the school any known mentalhealth problemor anyconcerns they may have about a student’smentalhealthor emotional wellbeing.This includesany changes infamilycircumstancesthatmayimpact the student’swellbeing
