Westchester Tourism launches new Craft Beverage Trail at Broken Bow Brewery

Westchester County Executive George Latimer joined Westchester County’s Department of Film and Tourism and craft beverage artisans from around the County to toast the debut of the new Westchester Craft Beverage Trail and free online passport. The event included bites, tunes and brews, celebrating agritourism by the makers that make Westchester a dynamic (and delicious) place to explore.

The new Westchester Craft Beverage Trail includes more than 24 distilleries, craft breweries and cideries throughout the region. Film industry nets $622.4M 2023 economic impact

A new report has shown that despite the industry-wide challenges in 2022 and 2023, film production in Westchester still yielded $2 billion in economic activity, 6,796 jobs and $656 million in wages during those two years.

Westchester County George Latimer said: “Westchester is a top-tier destination for film production thanks to our diverse locations, film-friendly communities and a skilled and supportive network of people and businesses. This report underscores the film industry’s vital role in driving our local economy, creating jobs and boosting tourism.”

The Westchester County Tourism & Film department brought together over 130 film production professionals and representatives from Westchester’s film locations, municipalities, and local businesses that support the sector at the Hudson River Museum on April 16 to highlight Westchester’s resiliency and collaborative, film-friendly environment. Noting that despite the industry-wide impact of external factors such as the pandemic, two industry strikes (Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA unions) which combined lasted more than seven months and increased competition from other regions vying for film business, the film sector was still able to contribute $1.9 million in sales tax, $950,000 in lodging-related revenue and over $1 million in permit and property rental fees in 2023 alone. While also adding 425 tourism jobs in Westchester as a result of the film industry.

Westchester County Tourism & Film Director Natasha Caputo said: “Our efforts to attract new business have made an undeniable impact. Our collaborative

approach, spanning the entire County, has proven inviting to filmmakers and visitors alike. What’s more, screen tourism, spurred by the recognition of our locations in today’s hottest shows, bolsters our economy and affirms that we are creating a welcoming, film-friendly environment.”

The film industry also creates a vibrant community in Westchester. A prime example is the Yonkers Film & Television Production Academy, a new career and technical school opening in September 2024. This collaboration between Yonkers Public Schools and Great Point Studios aims to prepare the next generation of artisans for employment in a variety of arts-based industries.

School superintendents talk public schools

In today’s K-12 classrooms, kids are being asked to deal with the same tumultuous emotional, social and technological issues as adults, and helping them navigate these modern challenges so that they can academically thrive is central to an educator’s mission, according to local school officials.

In an hour-long conversation, Mamaroneck Superintendent Dr. Charles Sampson and Rye Neck Superintendent Dr. Eric Lutinsky discussed how their schools are evolving to support today’s learners at the April 16 meeting of the Larchmont/ Mamaroneck Local Summit.

“Schools are much more dynamic now, they’re much more student-focused,” said Lutinsky. “And I think one of the biggest positive shifts is taking the teacher out of the role of the sage on the stage that stands in the front and just dictates things, to more of a coach that facilitates learning.”

Rapid technological advances have upended the teacher-student relationship and challenged teachers to engage in new ways. “Google Classroom and platforms like artificial intelligence and ChatGPT and things of that nature…allow students to instantly access all of this information that traditionally the teacher possessed,” said Sampson, who started as Mamaroneck’s superintendent last November.

While the prospect of AI in the classroom raises concerns similar to the introduction of the calculator, Sampson and Lutinsky want students

to learn how to use the near-ubiquitous technology responsibly and ethically. They are also exploring AI’s potential to help teachers. For example, Mamaroneck has launched a pilot initiative to evaluate AI’s ability to give students early and immediate feedback on their writing, so drafts are more refined when they reach teachers’ desks.

Schools are also grappling with political polarization and the heated rhetoric amplified by social media, as well as incidents of bias. “Discussions in hallways mirror those happening around the country,” said Sampson. “We try to prevent offensive speech in the first place, and when it does occur, [we are] training staff to react in real time.” He said the district is working to build community by giving students from different elementary schools the opportunity to meet before coming together in middle school. Lutinsky added that his teachers try to turn difficult situations into opportunities to discuss historical protest movements, as well as instill the importance of civil discourse.

To create a supportive environment for learning, the districts are addressing these and other issues as part of a broader approach to student well-being. The superintendents reported higher incidences of student mental health issues such as anxiety and depression – reflecting a national trend that preceded but was exacerbated by the pandemic – which requires integrated care involving parents, teachers and community partners, at increased

levels. “It’s not just, you know, go down to the hall and make a right and then, the back room, and that’s where the psychologist is,” said Lutinksy.

Additionally, Dr. Sampson discussed his district’s ongoing efforts to ensure students feel accepted and supported. One initiative, the Student Belonging and School Climate Survey, asks students to rate their engagement with the school as well as their feelings about its overall environment.

Elementary school-age children participate in regular discussions on social and emotional learning and equity.

Questions over how to address the growing needs of students (and the increased physical space that is required) are addressed in the coming year’s budgets. Both districts’ proposed budgets are within their respective tax levy caps.

For Mamaroneck, which is projected to serve 5,524 students in 2024-2025–11 more than this year, with a significant increase the high school population–Sampson has proposed an annual budget of $159,204,563, a 2.37% year-over-year increase, supported by a 2.59% increase over the current tax levy. According to Sampson’s office, the increase is primarily due to the rising cost of salaries, employee benefits and supplies, including Chromebooks. The District will also make use of expiring debt to put forth a new bond proposal, which would fund $28 million in maintenance including roofing, masonry and waterproofing

repairs, and expand the cafeteria at Hommocks and kitchens at Central and Murray elementary schools.

For Rye Neck, which is projected to serve 1,461 students–20 fewer than this year––Lutinsky has proposed a budget of $51,127,223, a 2.97% increase year-over-year, supported by a tax levy increase at the local cap of 2.19%. The increase is needed to support the rising cost of staff benefits and maintain teacher-student ratios, according to his office. Also up for a vote, Proposition II proposes using the District’s capital reserve to support paving, fencing and masonry repairs at the district’s elementary schools, a new roof for the high school gymnasium, as well as an infrastructure study for potential improvements elsewhere.

The Picture House announces spring film club season

The Picture House Regional Film Center (TPH) has announced that its highly-popular Film Club will kick off its spring season on Wednesday, May 1 at the Pelham theater. TPH’s Film Club offers movie-lovers the opportunity to see upcoming films in advance of their release date. Each season includes six films, which are followed by a discussion with the critic-in-residence Stephen Witty and special guest speakers from the industry. Spring 2024 Film Club dates in Pelham are May 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, and June 5. Subscriptions to Film Club are open to members of The Picture House.

Saint Pio Foundation to launch international initiative

The Saint Pio Foundation is a non-profit, charitable organization that promotes the knowledge of and devotion to Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, known also as Padre Pio, one of the most venerated contemporary saints of the Catholic Church.

On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, which took place this past April 4, the Foundation announced the launch on April 29 of the first international initiative titled “Photographs of Saint Pio: Memories of a Saint”. This will also be announced from the Vatican, on April 29.

As announced on Vatican News, this and many other initiatives will all be available via the dedicated webpage www.therealsaintpio.org, the gift of releasing the right of ten photographs of the Saint, some of them unpublished. During a recent one-on-one interview with EWTN Vatican correspondent Colm Flynn, the founder and CEO of the Saint Pio Foundation Luciano Lamonarca, also an acclaimed tenor, explained that the idea was, through the release of these ten pictures, to give access to them free of charge via a dedicated webpage. Symbolically, ten authentic photos are to signify one photo -

graph for each year the foundation has been in service.

Preceding the press conference at the Vatican, the foundation will also announce the release of “The Song of Saint Pio”, also free of charge, in five languages, via the dedicated website, and which will be launched from the city of Foggia, Puglia, Italy, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of composer Rico Garofalo, who composed this song in 1968, exactly two months after the Saint’s passing.

In addition, starting from January 2024, the foundation announced the release of a collection of 365 letters written by the Saint, to his spiritual directors and students.

Finally, perhaps the most important initiative, is the production, together with EWTN, the World Largest Catholic Network, of the first American docudrama about the life of Saint Pio, titled: Saint Pio of Pietrelcina: Man of Hope and Healing, expected to be released worldwide in September 2024, in English and in Spanish.

Actor, director and Tony Award Winner Joe Mantegna is the narrator of the docudrama. Among those who have offered their testimony in the docudrama are Golden Globe award-win -

ning actor Gary Sinise, Actor and singer Robert Davi, Grammy Award singer Jose Feliciano, and many others whose lives have been touched and inspired by Saint Pio.

Poet Ahmed Badr visits Eastchester HS

Telling one’s story is an important part of the human existence, and Eastchester High School students got a reminder of that on April 4, when they welcomed Ahmed Badr into their classrooms.

Badr, whose 2020 book, ‘While the Earth Sleeps We Travel,’ features stories, poetry and artwork from young refugees around the world, has been speaking to youth groups about the importance of their personal narratives for nearly 10 years and spent the day in Eastchester talking to high schoolers about how best to empower themselves through self-expression.

Sharing his own memories of being a refugee after his home in Iraq was bombed by a militia group in 2006, Badr invited students to think about their own lives and how they can craft their own personal stories—either publicly or in private.

“First and foremost, it’s about being able to connect with other people in a way that invites them to open up and share their own experiences,” said Badr. “Being able to express your own agency is a skill in so many ways, but being able to recognize yourself as the central authority over your own narrative is important.”

Throughout the day, Badr stopped into EHS English classrooms to discuss the construction of personal narratives, offering examples from his book and encouraging students

to collaborate on their own writing exercises.

The day was made possible through the district’s arts and education funding and aligned with the goals of the EHS English department, noted EHS English teacher Dr. Ruth Kambar.

“We’ve been talking about how to bring more personal narrative into the classroom, and getting students to be able to communicate their own story and what is important to them is part of our job” said Kambar. “We don’t all become English majors, but we will all have to present some sort of argument or idea in our work and in order to do that, you have to be comfortable with who you are.”

Those ideas are increasingly valuable in a world that offers people so many outlets to express themselves, added Badr, and the more thought Eastchester’s youngsters put into reflecting on their own lives and values, the more of an impact they can have on the world around them.

“Dr. Kambar was an extraordinary host, I felt so welcomed here; the students were amazing and engaged, asking great questions in every single workshop,” he said. “I want them to come away with the idea that everyone has the ability to express themselves now, which presents a lot of great opportunities for young people.”

Springtime in New York

I’m going to preface this column with a simple disclaimer. It’s playoff time in New York and by the time this paper hits the newsstands, the circumstances for both the Rangers and Knicks could be drastically different.

But right now, on Wednesday, April 24, I just have to say; what a time to root for our local teams.

Right now, as I’m writing this, both denizens of Madison Square Garden have gotten off to a stellar start in the 2024 postseason, going up 2-0 on their first-round opponents. The Knicks and Rangers have defended home court/ ice advantage against the Philadelphia 76ers and the Washington Capitals, respectively, and will be

heading on the road with their title hopes intact later this week. The Garden has been absolutely buzzing for the last few days, and for sports fans of a certain age, it’s hard not to feel more than a little bit nostalgic.

A lot of comparisons have been made in terms of the connections between this year’s playoff scenario and one of the fondest in my memory, that of 1994. The Knicks are the No. 2 seed, the Rangers won the President’s Trophy, and both are harboring grand—but achievable dreams of postseason success.

For fans around my age, 1994 was a surreal time. At 10 years old, at the very height of of sports fandoms. it seemed like things were just aligning for my MSG teams. And now, as a much wiser— not really—sports fan, it seems like things are rounding into shape again.

Are the Knicks an NBA Championship team? Can the Rangers repeat their ’94 run? The jury is still out, obviously, but through four playoff games, I’m feeling good again.

The Knicks’ Monday night win was an all-timer and I’m all set to buckle in for the white-knuckle exhilaration of a Stanley Cup playoff run. Of course it doesn’t mean things will work out the same way as they did 30 years ago, but I’m willing buy into the early signs. I’m hoping that one day, we’ll think of names like Mika Zibanejad and Josh Hart the same way we think of Adam Graves and John Starks. Will it happen? That’s anyone’s guess.

But right now, it’s just nice to be living in that fantasy, thinking about all that’s possible for these teams.

The thing about league games between wellmatched rivals is this; you can never count anyone out. New Rochelle found this out the hard way on Saturday, as the Huguenots saw host Mamaroneck battle back from a significant early deficit to come away with a 9-8 win in extra innings.

The Huguenots struck loudly in the top of the

second inning, rallying for six runs. But the Tigers would not be denied, responding with two runs in the bottom half of the frame on a homer by Jordan Schindelman and chipping away at the New Rochelle lead to send the game into extra innings.

Graham Williams, who came on in relief in the eighth inning, picked up the win when he was able to loft a deep fly ball to left field with bases loaded in the eighth inning to bring in the decisive run on a sacrifice fly.

“Bases were loaded, I was just trying to make contact, put it in play, maybe get the run in on an era or a sac fly,” said Williams. “As soon as I hit it, I knew it had the distance.”

Cooper Berenblat, initially poised to close out the Saturday tilt, ended coming on in the second inning, putting together a multi-inning relief outing that was integral in keeping the Tigers in the game.

Berenblat said that given Mamaroneck’s tough recent stretch—the Tigers came into the game having suffered losses to RC Ketcham and Harrison— meant that the group was focused on getting back in the win column against a familiar opponent.

“We knew we needed to turn it around and we were saying this was the perfect game to do it,” said Berenblat. “It’s a league game and the perfect time for us to start our run to try and win a league title.”

With the win, Mamaroneck improved to 4-4-1 on the year, while the Huguenots dropped to 3-5. The two teams will face off again on April 24, after press time, at Davis Elementary School.

“This win definitely gave us confidence,” said Berenblat. “Now we need to continue to get better each game.”
