Lifting Up Westchester announces annual Student Essay winners

Lifting Up Westchester (LUW), a nonprofit agency providing life-changing support to people who have lost their housing or are struggling to meet other basic needs, announces the winners of its Seventh Annual Student Essay Contest. Open to all 7th through 12th grade students attending school in Westchester County, students were invited to learn about LUW’s programs and write a fictional story about an individual or family who benefitted from one of those programs. Called “Walking in Someone Else’s Shoes,” this year’s essay contest looked to dispel some of the myths and stereotypes associated with the men, women, and children LUW serves.

The essay contest was established in 2017 in memory of Beth Massey Rubens, a lifelong resident of Westchester and a teacher, tutor, and mentor who had a love for language arts.

“Individuals or families who experience homelessness are often associated with stereotypes and prejudices that perpetuate misconceptions,” said Anahaita Kotval, CEO of Lifting Up Westchester. “Misinformation is extremely problematic. It contributes to stigmatization of people who are already marginalized and impacts the resources we as a society are willing to devote to help these

members of our community get back on their feet. By inviting our students to spend time and ‘walk in someone else’s shoes,’ we hope to dispel some of these myths that have stubbornly remained part of America’s collective consciousness.”

A panel of 45 judges reviewed the essays – submitted from schools all across Westchester – to select the ultimate winners. First, second, and third place cash prizes were awarded in each of the three grade groups: 7th and 8th grades, 9th and 10th grades, and 11th and 12th grades. Winners were honored at an Awards Luncheon on April 14th at Buon Amici Italian restaurant in White Plains, NY. The Awards Luncheon was generously underwritten by Salvatore & Ritchie D’Errico, owners of the D’Errico Jewelry stores in Scarsdale and Mt. Kisco and loyal supporters of LUW’s youth programs.

Free rabies vaccines for Westchester pets May 5

Westchester County residents can bring their dogs, cats and ferrets in for free rabies vaccinations on Sunday, May 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Stamen Animal Hospital, 61 Quaker Ridge Road, New Rochelle. No appointments are needed, but residents are advised to bring proof of prior rabies vaccinations for their pets. Call 632-1269 for more information.

An adult must supervise all pets. Cats and ferrets must be in carriers and dogs must be on a leash. Aggressive dogs must be muzzled. No examinations will be given.

Westchester County Health Commissioner

Dr. Sherlita Amler said: “Vaccinating your pet against rabies will protect your pet and your family in case your pet has had contact with a rabid or potentially rabid animal.”

Additional free rabies clinics will be scheduled and announced in the coming months, in other parts of the County.

Under New York State law, dogs and cats must receive their first rabies vaccine no later than four months after birth. A second rabies shot must be given within one year of the first vaccine, with additional booster shots given every one or three years after that, depending on the vaccine used. Owners who fail to get their pets vaccinated and keep vaccinations up-to-date may be fined up to $2,000.

Rabies is a fatal disease that spreads

through the bite or saliva of infected animals. Those animals most commonly infected are raccoons, skunks, bats and foxes. However, domestic animals such as cats and dogs are also at risk because they can easily contract rabies from wild or stray animals.

A pet that is up-to-date with rabies vaccinations would only need a booster dose of vaccine within five days of the pet’s exposure to a known or suspect rabid animal. Animals not up-to-date with rabies vaccinations would be quarantined or euthanized following contact with a rabid or suspect-rabid animal.

A change in an animal’s behavior is often the first sign of rabies. A rabid animal may become either abnormally aggressive or unusually tame. It may lose fear of people and become docile, or become excited and irritable. Infected animals sometimes stagger, spit and froth at the mouth. Children should be discouraged from touching unfamiliar animals, and tell an adult right away if they have been bitten or scratched by an animal.

All animal bites or contacts with animals suspected of having rabies must be reported to the Westchester County Health Department at 813-5000. After hours, callers should follow instructions in the recorded message for reporting public health emergencies, 24-hours a day.

Operation Prom Dress and Tuxedo Giveaway is coming

Prom season is almost upon on. But prom costs can make it hard or even impossible for many students to participate in this annual rite of passage with their peers. That’s why Westchester County is proud to partner with the Operation Prom Network for its annual Prom Dress and Tuxedo Giveaway at the County Center, Friday, April 26-Sunday, April 28.

The three-day event -- now in its 20th year -- provides high quality, high style free and low-cost prom dresses and tuxedos to high school students in Westchester County.

• Friday, April 26, 1-5 p.m.: Free dresses and tuxedos for high school seniors with valid school ID or transcript. Reservations required.

• Saturday, April 27, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.: Free dresses and tuxedos for high school seniors with valid school ID or transcript. No reservation required.

• Sunday, April 28 10 a.m.-2 p.m. –Open to all students and the general public. *Dresses only, $10 donation per dress. Tuxedos/suits NOT available.

For the second year in a row, the County is making free Bee-Line bus trips to the County Center available for all students participating in Operation Prom. Students should show their school IDs and mention Operation Prom to bus drivers.

County Executive George Latimer said: “Prom night should be a joyful and exciting experience for every child in Westchester. No child should have to stay home because they can’t afford an outfit. For 20 years, Noel and Operation Prom have made sure that every child in Westchester can look sharp on prom night, and the County is proud of our continuing partnership in that effort, including offering free bus fare for students taking part. It’s stressful enough asking out a prom date or making sure you have your dance moves together without having to worry about whether or not you can afford a tux or a nice dress.”

Department of Social Services Commissioner Leonard Townes said: “Prom expenses can be hundreds of dollars, a cost that is unaffordable for many Westchester families. Thanks to Operation Prom, no family in Westchester has to tell a child they can’t go to the prom because they can’t afford a dress or a tux.

Seeing the kids putting on these high quality outfits, and the boost to their self-esteem and self-confidence is really uplifting. I want to thank Noel and Operation Prom for bringing this experience within reach for an entire generation of students in Westchester.”

Noel D’Allacco-Ammirati, founder of the Operation Prom National Network, Inc., said: “For two decades, Westchester County has been a bedrock partner for Operation Prom. I want to

thank County Executive Latimer and Commissioner Townes for their continuing commitment to young people and families in Westchester. Having partners in County government who

truly care about families in need has been an essential part of allowing us to do what we do and is a real source of pride for this Yonkers native.”

Senior living comes to White Plains

Last Friday marked the start of construction on Mt. Hope Plaza, an affordable housing project for seniors in White Plains. The development, collaborating with Mt. Hope A.M.E Zion Church and Community Housing Innovations, will offer 56 affordable apartments, with 20 units earmarked for those needing supportive services.

Located on Lake Street, the six-story building will feature a structured parking garage, with 47 spaces shared with the church. All 56 apartments are designated for adults aged 62 and older with income at or below 60 percent of the Area Median Income. Twenty units will specifically cater to seniors experiencing homelessness, supported by services funded under the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative.

Legislator Ben Boykin (D-White Plains, Scarsdale, West Harrison) said, “I am excited to be here today to mark this magnificent milestone for Mt. Hope, the City of White Plains and Westchester County. I have been involved with this development since its conception nearly eight years ago. While there were several setbacks due to changes in the law, the Pandemic, cost increases, and funding sources along the way, the Church and the developers have overcome all obstacles and are now ready to break ground.”

“Our seniors are some of our most vulnerable citizens in terms of economic security, housing stability and healthcare. This development incorporates many features to address the challenges faced by our aging seniors as they live out their golden years.”

NYS State Senator Shelley B. Mayer said, “I was so pleased to join my colleagues to celebrate the groundbreaking of Mt. Hope Plaza. This project is a tremendous example of Westchester’s commitment to affordable housing and ensuring our aging community and those who need supportive services can remain in the community they love. I am deeply appreciative of Mt Hope AME Zion Church and Gregory Robeson Smith for their steadfast commitment to our community and for beginning this process many years ago, as well as Westchester County, the Board of Legislators, the City of White Plains and Governor Hochul for helping to make this wonderful development possible.”

The project’s developers are the Mt. Hope Community Development Corporation and Community Housing Innovations. Funding sources include Federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, subsidies from HCR, support from NYSERDA, investments from Westchester County and the City of White Plains, and financing from Webster Bank.

Dr. Gregory Robeson Smith, Senior Pastor of Mt. Hope A.M.E Zion Church, emphasized the importance of providing seniors with adequate and affordable housing. He said, “Our seniors are the crown jewels of the community with the greatest need for affordable adequate living accommodations. Unfortunately, they are our most forgotten. Our mission is without question to minimize and or eliminate this atrocious situation. Mt. Hope Plaza design will provide a com-

fortable living space during their maturing golden years.”

Ron Abad, CEO of Community Housing Innovations, highlighted the significance of affordable housing for the community’s prosperity. He said, “It is an awesome opportunity to see firsthand this remarkable partnership all for the purpose of providing quality and affordable housing to our seniors. All know that affordable housing leads to the growth and prosperity of our community.”

Farewell to the voice of the Yankees

If you’ve read this column through the years, you would know that I bear no love for the New York Yankees. As an avowed Red Sox fan, heaping even the smallest bit of praise on anything to do with the Bronx Bombers is as tough to swallow as week-old tuna fish. But following the unexpected retirement of longtime radio broadcaster John Sterling, I have to admit that I’m feeling certain notes of melancholy and loss, something that caught me plenty off guard over the last few days.

Earlier this week, Sterling announced that he would step down as the radio voice of the Yankees immediately, ending 36 years of service in the Bronx and a career that spanned nearly 70 years in total.

And despite all the grief I’ve given him in the past, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of loss.

Of course, Sterling has been an easy target for fans—especially in the latter stages of his career. His personalized home run calls have become fodder for ridiculous over the years especially in a world that prioritizes snark and sarcasm when it comes to sports discourse.

But now that he’s ending an decades-long career in the booth, it’s impossible not to look at those calls with a sort of wistfulness, as the legacy of an oft-imitated-yet-never replicated product of yesteryear.

And there’s something admirable about that.

For as long as I can remember, Sterling has been—with apologies to Michael Kay—the voice of the Yankees for many. Despite my feelings about the Yanks, I’ve spent enough time in my car over the years to develop what feels like a relationship

with both Sterling and his broadcast partner Suzyn Waldman.

Were they always great? Far from it. But there was a predictability in their routine and banter, something that ended up becoming a major part in my sports-watching—or listening—experience. Over the last few years, as Sterling would take more games off due to the stress of travel, I’d aways find any game called by other broadcasters, be it Justin Shackil or Ricky Ricardo, off-putting simply because it wasn’t the same cadence and broadcasting style I’d become accustomed to. His retirement reminded me that some of baseball’s greatest pleasures weren’t born from precision but from its quirks, and listening to his sonorous tones as he misjudged the depth of a fly ball or opined about the ever-evolving state of the game became a part of the rhythm of the game for me and countless other baseball fans.

Was he Vin Scully or Red Barber? Even he probably wouldn’t put himself in that rarified air. But he was a part of the game I love for so long, it’s going to be tough to turn on the radio and hear that the games will go on without him.

So here’s to John Sterling, his

voice, his quirks, and the calls that will live on in the minds and hearts of fans for a long time.

We won’t see another like him soon.

This week, radio announcer John Sterling announced his retirement after 36 years in the New York Yankees’ booth. Sports Editor Mike Smith had mixed feelings about the broadcast vet, but will be sad to see him go.

Eagles top Pelham for regular-season sweep

Notes

• Jason Ugalde had a complete game win

• Kieran McCloskey had an RBI

• Eastchester allowed 1 run against the Pelicans last week

The Eastchester baseball team came into last week’s two-game series against Pelham looking for a bit of retribution after dropping two games to the Pelicans in 2023. On April 10, the Eagles made good, earning a regular-season sweep with a victory that may well spell out the team’s blueprint for success this year.

Behind an impressive complete-game performance from senior Jason Ugalde—who struck out five batters and allowed just four hits—the Eagles topped Pelham 2-1 at home on Thursday to piggyback off a 4-0 victory over their league

foes two days earlier.

According to Ugalde, the Eagles came into the season hoping to erase last year’s sweep at the Pelican’s hands.

“It’s definitely a rivalry and we went 0-2 against them last year, so this was big,” said Ugalde. “I think it shows us what we can do this year.”

And what they can do—as evidenced by this two game stretch—is limit opposing offenses while finding welltimed hits, a clear key to success.

The Eagles’ stellar defense was on display, especially late in the game, as they were able to make big plays—including a few putouts at home plate—to keep their one-run lead intact.

“These guys have been there, and I have so much confidence in them, defensively,” said Ugalde. “That confidence allows me to just go out and pitch and not worry about trying to do too much because I know they will make the plays.”

Offensively, Kieran McCloskey led the Eagles’ two-run second inning with an RBI, but head coach Jesse Waters believes that the teams’ approach at the plate

against a tough Pelham lefthander in Silvio Morovic.

“We had a few hits taken away, and I thought we did a pretty good job at the plate today, overall,” said Waters. “We had a few guys thrown out and probably could have had a few more runs, but I think we’re definitely coming around at the plate.”

The ability to score runs will be especially important for the Eagles this year, as the team was dealt a blow after losing sophomore hurler Jojo Deljivic for the year right after the season began. But Waters has confidence in both Ugalde and Jake Warnock—who blanked the Pelicans in a 4-0 outing earlier in the week—to give the team a fearsome 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation.

“Jason and Jake are our aces and they’ve pitched really well for us so far and we’re expecting a lot from them this year,” said Waters. “Behind them, we’re going to need guys like Justin Mylenski to step up and fill that role, and we have confidence in his ability to do that.” Contact:
