The Osborn presents Orchestra Lumos
The Osborn’s WellSpring Series will present Orchestra Lumos: Around the World in 80 Minutes on Wednesday, April 10, at 7:30 pm. Free and open to the public, the concert will be held in The Osborn’s Auditorium at 101 Theall Road in Rye.
Led by musical director Michael Stern, Orchestra Lumos (formerly Stamford Symphony) features some of the finest musicians in the tristate area, who play in the orchestras of the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, NY Pops, and Broadway shows. Around The World in 80 Minutes is a grand musical tour, from the sounds of Old Vienna to a galaxy far, far away. The musical selection features the
nostalgia of The Wizard of Oz, the Beatles, Gershwin, and Mozart’s evergreen Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.
The Osborn’s signature WellSpring program engages all the dimensions that enrich fulfilling lives: intellectual, social, physical, environmental, occupational, emotional, and spiritual. Each spring and fall, The Osborn invites the wider community to share cultural programs through its signature WellSpring Series.

Westchester County Launches Gun Violence Prevention Taskforce
Westchester County Executive George Latimer and Westchester County Legislator Shanae Williams are joining together to announce the Westchester County Gun Violence Prevention Taskforce (WCGVPT). The taskforce, which will fall under the Office of the County Executive, will be aimed at unifying efforts across Westchester County to combat gun violence.
Latimer said: “Gun violence is not a major problem in Westchester County, but one death or injury due to gun violence is one too many and we are focused on getting to the root of the problem. The WCGVPT will serve as a critical platform to address the root causes of gun violence while advocating for effective prevention strategies.”
Williams said: “Yonkers is a relatively safe city for its size, but gun violence is still an issue. A few years ago, there was a shooting in front of my building at Getty Square. This incident made me consider ways to address the problem holistically in my community. I am thrilled to partner with County Executive George Latimer and his team in this effort and look forward to working with stakeholders to identify solutions that will eliminate gun violence.”
County Legislator James Nolan said: “As someone who lost their brother to illegal gun violence, I know what its impact on a family and a community looks like. I appreciate how proactive the County Executive is being by creating this task force. In 2021, the United States experienced
record gun violence. It is high time for all of us to come together and find a solution to this issue. I look forward to doing anything I can to help make the task force successful.”
The WCGVPT will work with organizations that are currently making strides in rooting out gun violence and foster collaboration across these agencies leveraging each other’s resources. The task force aims to identify and implement best practices to prevent and ultimately eliminate gun violence from Westchester County.
The goals of the WCGVPT:
• Change the social conditions and address the influences that lead young people to resort to gun violence.
• Foster collaboration across all agencies and levels of government, including county, town, village, city and law enforcement agencies.
• Facilitate collaboration between nonprofit and for-profit businesses already engaged in this work.
• Engage the community in meaningful dialogue, including victims and perpetrators of gun violence.
• Develop prevention and intervention strategies tailored to eliminate gun violence.
• Advocate for the necessary resources to support these efforts.
The task force will consist of volunteers representing various backgrounds.

Eastchester appoints new high school principal

appointing Chris Welsh to the position after a months-long interview process.
Welsh—who spent the last six years in the Scarsdale school district, serving as the SHS Assistant Principal for Academics and Operation—previously worked in the Pleasantville district, where he was a teacher, coach, curriculum coordinator and coordinator of student services.
He will succeed longtime EHS Principal Dr. Jeff Capuano, who will retire at the end of the school year after more than 20 years of service to the district.
In welcoming Welsh to the Eastchester team, EUFSD Superintendent Dr. Ronald Valenti noted that out of over 100 candidates who applied for the position, Welsh’s experience and educational background made him an ideal fit for the position.
“For the past six years, Chris has served Scarsdale High School’s students and faculty in broad areas of curriculum development, instruction, professional training, grading and assessment,” said Dr. Valenti. “He is well leveraged to become Eastchester’s next high school principal.”
Of his time in Scarsdale, Welsh pointed to numerous initiatives that he helped to launch aimed at helping students chart a course through their educational journeys.
“We dove into Scarsdale High School’s profile of a graduate, which identified a series of 21st century competencies that we want to see in our students through
a really collaborative process involving teachers, administrators, and students,” said Welsh. “We sought to answer three questions: what we want our students to know, what we want our students to be able to do and who we want our students to be upon graduating from Scarsdale.”
Welsh, who grew up in the area, said he is coming into his new post with a fondness and a familiarity with the Eastchester community, but added that he is also looking forward to learning more about the community—meeting with faculty, students and community members—before he officially steps into the principal’s office on July 1, 2024.
Prior to July 1, Welsh will spend five consultant days in-district getting a better sense of the lay of the land while making connections with the people and groups he will be working alongside next year.
“These five days are really going to be a representation of what my first year will be like; it’s going to be about listening and learning about the community,” he said. “I think that in order to be an effective leader, you have to form positive relationships, and that’s something that’s going to start right from the beginning.
“I’m humbled by this opportunity to serve as your principal, where my vision will be to foster a culture of excellence, inclusivity and innovation in Eastchester High School,” he added. “I’m committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure that every student receives a high-quality education.”

Rye HS Senior Wins Brain Bee at Burke Rehabilitation
Nicolas Echlov, a Rye High School Senior, came in first place at the Westchester County Brain Bee, held on March 7 at Burke Rehabilitation. This local neuroscience competition for high school students is designed to
encourage students to learn more about the brain while inspiring them to pursue careers in neurology and neurological research. Nicolas has now qualified for the 2024 USA Brain Bee in Florida this April.
Playland to host end of season paw-ty
Coming off of the “paws” of National Pet Day next month, Playland is hosting an End of Season Party for four-legged visitors at Playland’s Dog Beach, inviting all canine friends (and their human parents) to enjoy Playland Beach before the summer season kicks off. The event will take place on Sunday, April 21 from 11 am to 2 pm on Playland Beach and Boardwalk (with April 28 as the rain date), featuring complimentary professional dog photos by pet photographer Geoffrey Tischman of Tischman Pets Photography; prizes and giveaways by Pet Pantry; food truck; and many other tail-wagging festivities.
Canine guests can only be off leash when they are on the beach. Anywhere else including the boardwalk, all dogs need to be on leash.
Closing for the season on April 28, Playland’s Dog Beach is open from October to April and will reopen to dogs in October 2024. Playland will announce new dog-friendly experiences and activations later this year for a howl-ing good time!

Slowly heating up
The first few weeks of the spring season are always kind of a weird time. Between wild swings in the weather, the vagaries or Section 1 scheduling and teams heading south for Spring Break, there doesn’t seem to be an overwhelming sense that spring sports are here.
But by this time next week, there won’t be any doubt.
At this moment, there have been some teams who kicked off their 2024 campaign last week while others are still waiting to get their first taste of regular season action. Flag football kicked off on March 20, meaning that over the last two
weeks, we’ve seen the season kicking off in fits and starts, with regular season games sprinkled in amongst pre-season scrimmages as teams prepare for the upcoming campaign.
And, as is to be expected, it’s been a bit of a mixed bag thus far; we’ve seen some amazing varsity contests played and your more traditional mid-winter scrimmages played that have featured players so bundled up, it looks like they’re gearing up for the Iditarod.
But by the time next week rolls around? We’ll be firing on all cylinders.
Maybe the weather won’t be any better—we’ll have some rain next week but temperatures will reliably be near 60 degrees—but that won’t matter once these games count for
real. You’ll see an unmistakeable urgency on the field next week as everyone will be working towards kicking off the season on a positive note.
For those teams who have gotten their first few games in down south—a number of local baseball and softball teams have traveled down to Florida and Tennessee this week—the first few games will be a sobering reminder of playing early-spring sports in the Northeast, but it won’t really matter; we’ll be in full swing and the weather won’t seem like a huge obstacle.
While the cold—and the rain, and the wind—of your early-April games might be tough for fans and journalists to take, for athletes, it’s just part of the grind.
So I, for one, will cheer once
everyone’s season officially kicks off next week. If the weather won’t warm up immediately, the competition will.
And that’s enough for now.

March 20 would turn out to be a historic day for New Rochelle High School, as McKenna Field played home the first-year varsity flag football team’s program opening game. Fortunately for the Huguenots, they day would also see New Rochelle’s first win, as the hosts topped Carmel 19-7.
The Rams got on the board first, marching down the field and taking a 7-0 lead on New Rochelle just a few minutes into the first half. But the Huguenots responded right away as quarterback Jocelyn Hernandez
hit Brianne Foley for a long touchdown pass to put her team on the board. Hernandez and Foley would connect for another touchdown later in the half and the Huguenots would get their final score of the day from Stella Ziogas.
Hernandez said that the first touchdown helped the Huguenots settle into the game for what would be a dominant stretch.
“That first touchdown just gave us more confidence,” said Hernandez. “I think we played better after that.”
New Rochelle is one of the latest Section 1 schools to field a flag football team. Flag football was formally introduced as a varsity sport by New York State last year and Section 1 now boasts 26 competing team—up 10 from a year ago.
“We heard our athletic director start to talk about this in the beginning of the year,” said Foley, a senior. “So a few of us decided we really needed to get this done and were really pushing for this to become a sport here.”
Foley said that finally getting a chance to take the field
was a special moment and that the Huguenots and their coaches have been working hard to pick up—what is for many—a brand new sport in the matter of a few weeks.
“I think it really woke the team up when Carmel got their first touchdown because nobody wanted to come out and lose our first fame,” she said. “It took a bit of practice to get us all knowing what we were doing, but I think you could see everyone knew where they fit in today.”
Now, with their first win in the books, the Huguenots will look to continue their inspired play in a week that sees them taking on Brewster, John Jay, and Ossining in the span of five days.
“I think we all feel a lot better now that we got the first win out of the way,” said Foley. “We’re playing a really tough team on Friday and we know that’s going to be a hard game, but we’ll be heading in with some more confidence because of today.”
