Volunteers help to clean up New Rochelle

New Rochelle City Councilman Jared Rice in partnership with Habitat of Westchester, Volunteer New York!, Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle, New Rochelle Municipal Housing Authority, and 1 Change at a Time hosted New Rochelle’s Community Enrichment Zone, CEZ, Cleanup Day on the morning of Saturday, Aug. 27. More than 150 volunteers showed up to Remington Boys & Girls Club to start the beautification along the Lincoln Avenue corridor and in the surrounding streets between North and Clinton avenues.

People of all ages grabbed bags, rakes and gloves to help make the neighborhood more vibrant.

“I am gratified that over 150 volunteers showed up to participate in CEZ New Rochelle

Cleanup Day. Seeing the community come together to enhance the beauty of this important section of our city is rewarding. I want to thank the partner organizations who worked to make this event so successful,” said Rice, who was the day’s organizer.

CEZ New Rochelle Cleaup Day was created to encourage a green environment, while building relationships that establishes “a sense of pride in where you reside.” T-shirts and some cleaning tools were provided by Habitat of Westchester. The neighborhood cleanup day was followed with a community barbecue.

“Habitat of Westchester loves New Rochelle, and commits to working to improve this city,” said Executive Director Jim Kil-

loran. “As a main sponsor and facilitator, we continue as one team.”

Residents signed up through Volunteer New Rochelle, a partnership between the city and Volunteer New York! to connect willing helpers with community organizations and initiates.

“Volunteer New York! is proud to be able to work this closely with a great city like New Rochelle to help increase volunteerism at the community level,” said Executive Director Alisa Kesten. “This is just the start of a really great partnership.”

The New Rochelle Public Library has reopened the Memorial Highway entrance, but the Lawton Street entrance is scheduled to be closed for construction and is expected to be completed by fall 2016. While construction is underway, the only wheelchair-accessible entrance will be the reopened Memorial Highway doors, which have a ramp leading down from street level. There will be additional wheelchair-designated parking spaces on Memorial Highway. The only book drop at the main library will also be located by this doorway.

Patrons may also return books by using the book drop at the Hugh Doyle Center, located at 94 Davis Ave., or in front of the Huguenot Children’s Library, located on North Avenue in front of New Rochelle High School.

Yoga instructor Nora LeMorin leads the gentle yet invigorating sessions, helping participants return to work with renewed energy and focus. Participants do not need to change out of work clothes, and mats will not be needed for these sessions of breathing and meditation techniques as well as the guided relaxation. Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library Book Sales The Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library will be holding a mini book sale on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the main library lobby. The book sales include popular novels, mysteries and nonfiction in hardcover and paperback, to children’s books, CDs and DVDs. Proceeds from these sales allow the Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library to provide funding for quality children and adult programming, and will help the library by contributing to various projects and improving service to the community. Job Search Coaching Those who are searching for a job but don’t know where to start are welcome to drop in to see the job coach on Tuesdays anytime from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Handleman Business Opportunity Center on the second floor. The job coach will help people achieve their goals, one step at a time.

Those dropping in to see the job coach should arrive with a pen, calendar, notebook and both a hard and digital copy of their resume. This program is free and open to the public, and registration is not required.

Free career and educational counseling The New Rochelle Public Library in conjunction with WEBS Career and Educational Counseling Service is once again offering a free eightweek career counseling seminar for adults this winter called “Managing Your Career in Changing Times.”

The 19-hour workshop consists of an orientation session at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20; eight group sessions on Tuesdays beginning Sept.

HOW celebrates life with butterfly release Hospice of Westchester, HOW, an organization which has provided exceptional end-of-life care to residents of Westchester for more than 24 years, recently hosted its sixth annual Celebration of Life Memorial Butterfly Release. bers joined HOW for two remembrance ceremonies, each concluding with the release of Monarch butterflies that honored the memories of loved ones who have passed away. The event took place at the Wainwright House in Rye. The ceremonies featured wel-

come remarks from Mary K. Spengler, CEO of HOW. Hospice staff and representatives from the Comfort Crew Pediatric Palliative Care Program shared readings related to loss and bereavement, as well as information about the journey of the Monarch butterfly, which is often viewed as a symbol of loved ones who have passed away. David Devine and The Soundettes performed musical interludes during the ceremonies.

Following each remembrance program, HOW bereavement coordinators read the names of those being remembered. Guests then gathered for the release of butterflies in memory of their loved ones.

Children and their families were invited to participate in crafts centered on the Monarch butterfly. Guests were also invited to walk the grounds of Wainwright House throughout the day.

In a moving ceremony on the front steps of New Rochelle City Hall, nearly 150 people gathered to remember the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Organized by Peter Parente, president of the United Veterans Memorial and Patriotic Association of New Rochelle, the annual ceremony and candlelight vigil was the culmination of a weeklong tribute to the nearly 3,000 lives lost at the hands of terrorists 15 years ago.

The commemoration began with the planting of thousands of flags last week in front of the city’s government building, one for each life lost.

Parente and a team of volunteers helped organize Sunday’s ceremony and candlelight vigil, which centered on the victims and their families. Parente offered the podium to anyone who wished to share memories or thoughts with the crowd.

Among those in attendance was John D’Allara, an Iona College graduate who was just 7 years old when his father, also named John D’Allara, an officer with the New York Police Department, perished. D’Allara’s powerful words spawned a standing ovation from the crowd.

Parente, who visited ground zero just days after the attack, recalled the vivid images carved into his memory.

“My wife and I went down the Saturday after that Tuesday,” Parente said. “It was a ghost town. We went to the firehouses and left candles at the doorsteps, praying for all the people who were still missing, [and saw] all the pictures on the walls.”

At this year’s ceremony, Parente was able to bring some of this imagery to life. He broke from his usual program and, with the help of Sound Associates of Yonkers, set up video projection screens in order to display video footage captured by members of the New Rochelle Police Department at ground zero in the days follow-

The video chronicled devastation as well as the rebuilding of downtown Manhattan with images of the construction of the Freedom Tower, which currently stands as the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

Members from most local houses of worship comprised this year’s interfaith prayer council, and a musical interlude was led by Elizabeth Mott of the

Family Christian Center of New Rochelle.

In closing, Parente offered a special thanks to Michael and Nancy Kirkpatrick and Angela Trangucci for their help with the planting of the flags, which in his mind served its purpose as a weeklong attraction for many residents.

“I don’t want anyone to ever forget what happened to us,” he said.

CNR awarded $2.6M scholarship grant

The College of New Rochelle, CNR, has been awarded nearly $2.6 million in federal grant money to provide scholarships to economically disadvantaged students pursuing careers in nursing or other healthcare fields over the next four years.

Congressman Eliot L. Engel, a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee's Health Subcommittee, announced the funding. CNR was one of 99 colleges and universities among several hundred that navigated a rigorous application process to receive HRSA grant money.

“No one should be denied an education in their field of choice because of their background,” said Engel, a U.S. representative for New York’s 16th congressional district, which includes Westchester County and parts of the Bronx. “This funding will ensure that students from lowincome homes can pursue careers in healthcare and, in turn, care for the people of our community.”

“The receipt of this multi-million dollar grant, which brings the total in federal and state

grants awarded to The College of New Rochelle during the last two years to over $17 million, is a clear testament to the College’s ability to improve our students’ success,” said Judith Huntington, president of The College of New Rochelle. “This grant will further enable the College to broaden access to higher education as we work purposefully to prepare our students to meet the rapidly growing work force needs in healthcare.”

The funding is being provided by the Health Resources and Services Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

HRSA manages grant programs to benefit nursing education, including the Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students Program, which is mandated by congress to promote diversity in the nursing workforce and in other healthcare professions. The program awards scholarship funding to colleges and universities to be distributed to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The College of New Rochelle will receive $649,980 annual-

ly—$2,599,920 over the grant’s duration—through HRSA for the SDS program.

"This important, four-year grant will make an incredible impact on CNR students seeking their first baccalaureate nursing degree and who may one day seek advanced degrees in primary care,” said Dr. H. Michael Dreher, The Elizabeth Bell LeVaca Dean of the School of Nursing. “This generous award from HRSA will support the College in continuing its long record of educating nursing students who perform exceptionally well on the National Council Licensure Examination.”

The college’s accepted proposal, called the First Undergraduate Nursing Degree Scholarship program, will provide scholarships covering a minimum of 50 percent of annual tuition and related costs to incoming freshmen and transfer students who enroll full time in the college’s BSN program track or Registered Nurse-to-BSN program track.

our student body improve their educational experience while impacting and improving the health of our nation,” said Debra Simons, associate dean of the School of Nursing and Associate Professor at CNR. This is the fourth major grant awarded to CNR in less than two years. The three previous federal and state grants totaled more than $15 million: September 2014: CNR received a $10 million grant—the largest in its 112-year history— from the U.S. Department of Ed-

ucation to renovate and expand facilities aimed at better preparing students in nursing, science, and mathematics.

October 2014: The college received a $4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education.

That funding was earmarked for pilot testing of “Mentoring, Undergraduate Research and Augmented Libraries,” which was geared toward finding successful practices for improving adult students’ grades, retention and

four-year graduation rates.

February 2016: CNR was awarded a $1.062 million grant from the state Higher Education Capital Matching Grant Program, allowing it to redesign, reconstruct, rehabilitate and reequip its science facilities. The laboratory renovations will enhance academic programs that support biochemistry-related initiatives; a new degree program in health and wellness; innovative general education programs; and research opportunities. Business Briefs JCCH announces new education director The Jewish Community Center of Harrison, JCCH, recently welcomed Ronit Razinovsky as its director of Education and Family Engagement at the synagogue’s Kehilah School.

Born and raised in Israel, Razinovsky’s first Ronit Razinovsky experience as an educator was during her Israel Defense Force service, serving as a “Morah-Chayelet” for young and underprivileged soldiers. That experience inspired her to continue her studies at the Hakibbutzim College, where she graduated as an elementary school teacher.

Razinovsky moved to Westchester County and started her career as a Jewish educator at Solomon Schechter of Westchester and she was the education director at the Shaarei Tikvah Religious School in Scarsdale for the last 20 years.

Razinovsky is a vibrant, creative and passionate Jewish educator with a strong belief in lifelong learning. She received a master’s in Jewish Education from the William Davidson School at the Jewish Theological Seminary, and recently joined the Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education for an Executive Ed.D. in Jewish Educational Leadership and Innovation. She participated in the Leadership Institute, a mutual program from JTS and Hebrew Union College. She also has trained for two years with the Jewish New Teacher Project, mentoring teachers to increase teacher effectiveness and retention and student achievement. Her goal is to bring the language of teaching standards, collaboration and professional development into her school culture. Last summer, Razinovsky was accepted to Harvard Graduate School of Education where she studied an intensive course on “Improving Schools: The Art of Leadership.”

Over the years, Razinovsky has developed warm relationships with students and parents. “I am looking forward to getting to know the JCCH and Harrison communities and working closely with my teachers and the rest of the synagogue staff to create an exciting learning environment for our students and their families,” she said.

The good, the bad and LaGuardia Airport

Local entrepreneur to launch ‘insider’ directory

that sane. Cheerfully, I entered Terminal C to look for gate C37 and saw the sign: Gates C1-14.

Hmm. “I just walked all the way to the end,” a lady told me as we meandered around before discovering a little desk where a harried employee was explaining that Terminal C is now in two different buildings at once. Physics be damned.

To get to Parallel Universe C requires a shuttle bus, something that must throw off any traveler who allotted themselves just a few minutes to walk to their gate.

And to get to the shuttle bus requires schlepping down a bunch of sad, service entrance steps with your luggage or, in the case of one family I was watching, your luggage, two babies and a double stroller. No elevator, no offer of help. Welcome, American Airlines passengers!

The shuttle bus winds its way past the New York of 1977: Piles of traffic barriers looming next to loading docks protected by the dingy plastic strips you see at the car wash.

“I’ve never seen an airport so messy,” Sravya Bandi, an I.T. analyst down from Montreal, told me.

But then you get off the bus, drag your luggage (and kids and double stroller) up three flights of stairs, and suddenly: Oz! This terminal is gleaming! It’s more than respectable, and it elegantly refutes the famous Joe Biden quote, “If I blindfolded you and took you to LaGuardia Airport, you [would] think, ‘I must be in some third world country.’”

After traveling to get what she needed, Kucevik said she realized there was a small soccer shop in nearby New Rochelle, which had exactly what she wanted. On top of that, she also found out—after the fact— a nearby home décor shop she frequents had a sale she missed because she couldn’t find the information within her overflowing inbox. It was at that point that Kucevik knew she needed to do something.

“I envision 914 Insider to be the directory for everything Westchester. My goal is to create the largest directory of small businesses for users to find anything and everything they are searching for in Westchester, and for users to stay connected to the shops they love,” she explained.

Kucevik’s service will essentially make sure those living in the 914 won’t have to go through what she did. “They’ll be able to stay up-to-date with sales and specials. I’m essential-

A recent New York Times’ description of LaGuardia Airport bore a certain resemblance to the End Times. As Patrick McGeehan reported on one particularly terrible day last month: “[S]ome harried travelers abandoned cars and navigated the clogged Grand Central Parkway—the main highway serving LaGuardia—on foot with suitcases in tow. Such traffic debacles have become so common that seasoned fliers and travel bloggers have recommended avoiding LaGuardia altogether, perhaps for years to come.”

This called to mind the evening I’d flown home earlier in the summer to find a line of perhaps 200 to 300 people waiting for a taxi. I whipped out my phone and videotaped it the way you’d video a funnel cloud or mud slide.

And those were people who weren’t going to miss a plane!

Anyone trying to depart has been advised by the Transportation Security Administration to arrive at LaGuardia a minimum of two to 2 1/2 hours before takeoff. So, last week, I did.

For a 1 p.m. fight on American Airlines, I got to the airport at 10:30 a.m. via the amazingly efficient bus from the 74th Street/Roosevelt Avenue station. To my shock, everything seemed efficient when I arrived, too. The check-in lines were vanishingly short, the lady at the bookstore was delightfully chatty, and the security line was pleasantly swift and gropingfree. I felt I could almost hold onto a bottle of water; it was

Okay, the parking is impossible, and “There is clearly not enough room to drop people off,” said Marie DeParis, a TV marketing executive on her way to Florida. “But once you walk inside and get past security, it’s beautiful!”

The travelers I spoke to from Ghana, Ukraine and even New Jersey marveled at the futuristic décor, including a restaurant so sleek one man wasn’t sure how to order. “I kept trying to signal a waiter,” he said, “until someone explained, ‘No, you order using the iPad.’” Bo Miller, a 42-year-old veteran from Charlotte, North Carolina, said he found the prices futuristic, too. “I just had a burger and the smallest ginger ale I ever had, for $21.” But, he added, the burger was good.

Miller was here to pick up his service dog, Ringo, and they looked like they’d already bonded. “He can smell when I’m having a nightmare,” he said. After two tours of service in Afghanistan and two in Iraq, these happen frequently enough that he is grateful for his new buddy. The two of them radiated hope in a terminal that, for the most part, radiated the same.

Yes, there will be years of construction along with untold parking woes. There may still be those days, like the one a traveler named Will recalled from his most recent LaGuardia trip; “We were 44th in line for takeoff.”

But for those of us traumatized by the old LaGuardia, the Airport of Despair, the new terminal hints of brighter days to come.

Similarly, our online inbox is often flooded with offers from stores we have no interest in shopping at.

Sabrina Kucevik knows all too well about this problem, and is trying to correct it. The Bronxville-based entrepreneur will launch 914 Insider on Sept.

“I started this because I encountered the problem of not being able to find local small businesses for soccer gear for my son,” explains the Bronx native. “When I Googled the gear,

“Advertising today is difficult for small businesses. Many cannot afford to list everywhere and many stick to advertising in their local cities, repeating the same ads to the same customer base,” she explained. “Businesses will be able to target specifically those cliental they want.”

And best of all, she notes. It’s free for all. “We’ve need to support our local businesses, and stay connected,” Kucevik said.

Are you ready for some football?

Baseball might still be America’s pastime, but I think it’s getting increasingly hard to deny one simple fact: Football is America’s sport.

The NFL kicked off the 2016 season in earnest on Sept. 11, as the league aired its first slate of Sunday games, prompting football fans all across the nation to embark on the annual tradition of surrendering one day a week to the gridiron gods for the next four months.

Autumn is a glorious time, indeed.

Last Sunday, I spent the 1 p.m. games hunkered down at Mickey Spillane’s in Eastchester, and honestly, I was amazed at what I saw.

Oftentimes, when local teams have “big” games—playoff contests most notably—you’ll see supporters of that club come to-

gether in public to share the experience of victory or defeat. But on Sunday, I wasn’t simply surrounded by Jets fans hoping for a few short hours of joy before Nick Folk’s inability to convert on routine kicks sent them home in foul moods; there were fans of all stripes gathered around the bar, tuned into their team’s openers hoping to bask in the glow of another NFL season.

I’m not kidding; just about every team was represented. There were entire families decked out in Packers’ green huddled around a widescreen offering the Green Bay game, screaming with delight each time Aaron Rodgers dropped back to pass.

There were Bills fans, who, free from the social constraints of attending a tailgate at Ralph Wilson Stadium, managed to avoid hurling their bodies through any flaming tables; there were Raider fans, clad in vintage Jack Tatum and Kenny Stabler jerseys, creating a Westchester version of Oakland’s “Black Hole” in

the back corner of the bar.

Heck, I think I even saw someone rooting for the Browns.

And that’s the amazing thing about football. What other American sport can get that many fans of different—often rival—teams in one place, breaking bread and sharing a drink or two?

Look, I love Major League Baseball. If I could only watch one sport for the rest of my life, I’d choose baseball in a heartbeat. But it’s undeniable how pervasive the NFL has become in our culture.

Perhaps because of the schedule, the NFL isn’t followed like other sports. It’s one game a week for 16 weeks. It doesn’t require the same massive, everyday commitment that following other sports does. Each regular season game is an event, and if there’s one thing Americans like, it’s events.

These next few weeks, baseball teams will be finishing out their regular seasons, vying for

playoff berths, and you’d better believe that with my Red Sox in the mix, I’m going to be tuned into just about every single game

until they finally clinch.

Unless, of course, they’re playing on a Sunday. If that’s the case, I’m going to have to take a

rain check.

Mount Vernon 40-6 Battling an improved Knights team and the sweltering heat, New Rochelle rolled to its second-straight victory on Saturday, topping rival Mount Vernon by 34 points at McKenna Field.

Despite a scoreless first quarter, the Huguenots began to roll in the second, opening up a 21-0 lead before the half and continuing their dominance throughout the game to improve to 2-0 on the season. Jared Baron got things started by busting a 35yard touchdown run with 9:20 on the clock in the second quarter, and teammate Romeo Holden helped break things open, hauling in a 15-yard TD pass at the end of the first half, then also scoring on a 51-yard run just two minutes into the third quarter.

Last Saturday’s game renewed the longstanding rivalry between New Rochelle and Mount Vernon, who have not faced each other since 2011, when Section I temporarily moved away from geographic scheduling. Over the last decade, the Huguenots have been the most dominant football program in Class AA, while the Knights have not enjoyed a winning record since 2009.

In their first two games of the year, New Rochelle has outscored its opponents 74-19, and will look to continue its winning ways on Saturday, Sept. 17 against Scarsdale.

Both teams come into this week’s game with sterling 2-0 records, but Scarsdale struggled against Mount Vernon in Week 1, topping the Knights 28-26.

Last season, the Huguenots beat the Raiders 33-7 in the

opening round of the Class AA playoffs.

Boys Soccer 9/7 Arlington d. New Rochelle 1-0 New Rochelle fell short in its bid to unseat the top team in Class AA, as the Admirals hung on to outlast the Huguenots with a 1-0 win. Mike Vanikotis scored the only goal of the game, which was enough to keep the reigning Section I champs perfect thus far this season.

Horace Greeley 2-1

Keion Hiland-Jones stiff-arms a Mount Vernon defender on Sept. 10. The Huguenots trounced the Knights 40-6.

An evenly played game between the Quakers and the Huguenots came down to a secondhalf goal, as New Rochelle bested highly touted Greeley 2-1.

Felipe Tobin scored both goals for the Huguenots, including the game-winner that came in the 50th minute. Max Furman scored the lone goal for Horace Greeley.

The Huguenots will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 14, after press time, when they travel to Clarkstown North. The Rams are coming off a 2-1 win over Albertus Magnus on Sept. 10.

Girls Soccer 9/12 Ossining d. New Rochelle 3-2 The Indians’ 1-0 halftime lead held up against New Rochelle on Tuesday, despite a late-game push by the Huguenots, as Ossining came away with a 3-2 home win.

Ruby Hastie and Kelsey Freeman found the net for New Rochelle in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to undo a terrific two-goal performance by Ossining’s Jhada Francis.

Both goalies played well, as Ossining’s Juliana Abramovich made 13 saves and Mary Fay of New Rochelle made 10.

The Huguenots will look to bounce back on Thursday, Sept.

15, after press time, when they head up North Avenue to take on rival Ursuline. On Sept. 12, Ursuline beat Fox Lane 4-0.
