Preventing falls: Tips to help seniors So many elderly friends and family members dread the possibility of falling, and with good reason—it is an increasingly common occurrence among our aging population and the consequences of a fall can be quite dire. Each year in the United States, more than 11 million people over the age of 65 fall—that's one of every three senior citizens.

Plus, falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries to older people, and cause more than 90 percent of hip fractures.

Aside from the injuries and even death that might result, falling can lead to decreased mobility and even more fear of falling, which in turn can limit a person’s independence and negatively affect their quality of life.

Physical therapist Daniel Holand, from the Visiting Nurse Service of New York, VNSNY, tells his Westchester patients and family caregivers that the first thing they can do is to talk with their primary care doctor about their risk for falling. Physicians can serve as an important first checkpoint for falls prevention. Asking about an individual’s history of

falling, and observing him or her doing specific in-office activities, such as getting up from a chair and walking steadily, helps the physician identify people who are at higher-than-average risk.

Holand also recommends that caregivers talk with family members about what they would do if they fall. He suggests considering a Personal Emergency Response System, PERS, or “panic button” that can be worn around the neck or in a pocket.

In the home, a family caregiver’s watchful eye can be extremely helpful in preventing falls.

A handy Home Falls Prevention Checklist can also be downloaded at vnsny.org/FallsChecklist, and VNSNY’s Holand says there are specific risk factors for falling, listed below, that a family caregiver should consider and discuss with their physician or home care nurse: • Age: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Preven-

tion, CDC, each year one in every three adults age 65 and older falls. Falls happen to all people, Holand says, but the older people are when they fall, the more susceptible they are to injury, and recovery becomes more challenging. In fact, people age 75 and older who fall are four to five times more likely than those ages 65 to 74 to be admitted to a long-term care facility for a year or longer.

• Multiple medications: Taking four or more medications, especially those that may cause side effects or interactions such as dizziness or drowsiness, increases one’s risk of falling. You should talk with your primary doctor about any side effects your family member is experiencing from medications. Taking medicine with a meal or before bed or working with the doctor to have lowest possible dosages might help ameliorate some symptoms.

• Vision: Family caregivers should encourage family members to get an annual vision exam, because failing vision can go unnoticed by a person able to

carry out daily activities such as reading the paper or watching television. However, vision problems can be the cause of a fall and improving vision can go a long way in preventing falls. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, showed the effect of cataract surgery on helping patients prevent falls. The study found that for the oldest patients, and those who were very ill, those who had cataracts removed sustained 16 percent fewer hip fractures in the year after surgery than those who did not. Patients ages 80 to 84 experienced the most significant benefit, with 28 percent fewer hip fractures. The study underscores the important role vision plays in healthy aging.

Holand recommends that family caregivers help their care recipients update glasses frequently and consider getting a pair with single vision distance lenses for some activities, such as walking outside.

• Home Environment: It’s important to make periodic assessments of the home to reduce tripping hazards. Keep pathways clear of clutter and well-

lighted, make sure floors are dry, ensure that stairs are level and evenly spaced, and install handrails wherever there is more than one step down. Also, carefully gather wires, tape down carpets, and install grab bars in the bathroom so no one is tempted to grab onto a towel bar (which is not meant to support weight).

Especially for those seniors who have some incontinence and find themselves hurrying to the bathroom, it’s critical that their pathways are clutter-free, secure and well-lighted.

• Footwear: Research says if you’re over 65, you increase your risk of falling if you walk barefoot or with only socks. Our reflexes decrease as we age, so if your family member happens to step on something injurious, the reflex that causes him or her to hop off it may cause them to fall.

Encourage your family member to wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes both around the house and outside.

• Assistive Devices: If your family member uses a cane, walker or crutch, make sure it fits properly in terms of height and handle grip size, and that they use it correctly. At least once a month, turn it upside

down and make sure the rubber tips are in good shape and change them if they show signs of wear.

• Balance: Good balance is important to prevent falls. But a person’s balance may be affected by illness or medication.

If you feel you have to hold your family member or they may topple, talk to your doctor. He or she may recommend a balance retraining program.

• Muscle strength: Research at California State University showed that physical activity plays an important role in preventing and/or lowering an older adult’s risk for falling. As a caregiver, you can help your family member keep up their muscle strength by reminding them, coaching them, or participating with them. According to VNSNY’s Holand, various forms of exercise can help, including walking, tai chi, yoga, strength training, and exercise classes for seniors.

New Rochelle Public Library

The New Rochelle Public Library has reopened the Memorial Highway entrance, but the Lawton Street entrance is scheduled to be closed for construction and is expected to be completed by fall 2016. While construction is underway, the only wheelchair-accessible entrance will be the reopened Memorial Highway doors, which have a ramp leading down from street level. There will be additional wheelchair-designated parking spaces on Memorial Highway. The only book drop at the main library will also be located by this doorway.

Patrons may also return books by using the book drop at the Hugh Doyle Center, located at 94 Davis Ave., or in front of the Huguenot Children’s Library, located on North Avenue in front of New Rochelle High School.

Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library Book Sales The Friends will hold their next monthly Big Book Sale on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the lobby of the main library. In these free interactive presentations, Gargagliano will demonstrate simple and delicious Latin-inspired recipes, using locally grown produce found at the market. Building on the flavors of the Italian American dishes she grew up with and the Latin dishes she’s enamored with, she creates wonderful menus of lively, tasty fare.

Participants do not need to change out of work clothes, and mats will not be needed for these sessions of breathing and meditation techniques as well as the guided relaxation. American Red Cross blood drive The New Rochelle Public Library will host an American Red Cross blood drive on Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., in the main library’s Meeting Room and theater stage.

The American Red Cross Blood Services depends on committed donors to give the “gift of life” to help ensure that quality blood products and services are always available when and where they are needed by hospital patients. One unit of blood can help save the lives of up to three people.

The Red Cross needs donors to keep giving blood during all times of the year if it is to continue meeting patients’ need for blood: transfusions for trauma victims who have experienced accidents or burns; patients undergoing heart surgery or organ transplants; and patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer and other diseases. A donation will help ensure that blood is available for those many patients who require this lifesaving gift.

Donors need to be at least 17 years of age.

Mother on mission to help autistic, ADHD kids On Thursday, Oct. 20, It Takes a Village to Educate a Child, TAVTEC, a nonprofit entity founded by a mother with a child with special needs, will host “Dancing with OUR Stars” at the VIP Country Club in New Rochelle. The purpose of the gala is to raise funds and create awareness about the need for programs that help children with autism and attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder, ADHD, with their social-emotional development. Honorees are Colin Gillespie, president of LEGO Education, and Dr. Brian Osborne, superintendent of the New Rochelle school district.

The founder of TAVTEC, Sonia Marshall-Brown, created TAVTEC because of the need for high-quality affordable programs that focus on the socialemotional development of children with autism and ADHD. The nonprofit organization is based in the city of New Rochelle.

Marshall-Brown was inspired by her son’s experiences to create programs to address the fact that many children struggle with

their social-emotional development because they lack meaningful relationships with their peers. “Strong social relationships support mental health, and that ties into better immune function, reduced stress and less cardiovascular activation,” says Dr. Debra Umberson, a sociologist at the University of Texas at Austin.

According to the Autism Society of America, one out of 68 children are diagnosed with autism, and one out of 54 boys are diagnosed with ADHD. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported autism as the fastest growing disability, at a growth rate of more than 1,000 percent. With much schools’ emphasis on the core subjects, there is a need for programs that support the social-emotional development of children.

“Research underlying social and emotional development and learning suggests that a child who is anxious, afraid, preoccupied, depressed or alienated is a child whose courage or ability to learn is impaired,” reads an excerpt from “The Other Kind

of Smart,” an article by Drake Bennett published in The Boston Globe.

Marshall-Brown’s son’s challenges led to a myriad of socialization hurdles; however, she noticed that when he was playing with a “high-interest activity” such as LEGOs or technology, he could focus for an extended period of time. This was the catalyst that led to It Takes a Village to Educate a Child. TAVTEC uses science, technology, engineering, art and math, STEAM, as the vehicle to engage and boost the self-esteem of school-aged children with autism and ADHD. The organization’s goal is to also teach children social and leadership skills, while simultaneously engaging them in their core subjects. Through exploration and positive experiences, students are able to gain confidence and a healthy self-esteem that will permeate all areas of their life.

The funds raised will be used to improve existing programs and create more opportunities to help children develop their social and leadership skills, selfesteem, ability to read non-verbal

and verbal cues, and become a viable independent member of society. There is an 80 percent unemployment rate among individuals with a disability, according to The Autism Society.

ArtsFest celebrates the city’s arts and artists

It was there in the shining eyes of the children who clambered aboard the free ArtsFest trolley, and it was there in the graceful movements of the dancers who performed at the Whitney Young Auditorium on Saturday, Sept.

24. It was obvious in the dreamy smiles of the people who visited artist’s studios, peeking behind the scenes to see where the magic is made. You could even catch a glimpse of it reflected in the shiny hood ornaments glinting on the classic cars clustered on Hamilton Avenue. “It” was joy, energy, excitement—all inspired by the diversity of arts to be found all around New Rochelle during ArtsFest.

Organized by the nonprofit New Rochelle Council on the Arts, NRCA, ArtsFest is an annual celebration of the arts and the artists who live and work in New Rochelle. This year, more than 200 artists were represented at 39 venues, from visual artists

The next day, volunteers were up with the sun to prepare for a day jam packed with activity, from the Classic Car Show (sponsored by AJ’s Burgers) to LEGO Day at the Huguenot Children’s Library. On Library Green downtown, the New Rochelle Public Library’s Barbara Davis helped dozens of aspiring young artists make their mark on a community wall mural, while the College of New Rochelle welcomed visitors to its Castle Gallery for a show of photography by Gordon Parks and Toni Parks.

A steady stream of people of all ages lined up both days to ride the ArtsFest History Hop Trolley, a tour of downtown historic sites narrated by NRCA volunteers. The trolley tour introduced riders to the History Hop, which was created by Davis with support from New Rochelle’s BID and highlights buildings that tell the story of New Rochelle’s rich history; people can use the free History Hop brochure to take a self-guided tour, using their phones to read QR codes on blue CONTINUED on next page

All weekend, New Rochelle artists opened their studios and shared their stories with visitors.

They ranged from collaborative studios like The Arts at Five Anderson (featuring the work of Fanny Alliè, Kara Lynn Cox, Hilary Doyle, Erik Gonzalez, Will Hutnick, Mollie McKinley, Jeanette May and Ryann Slauson), High Brook Studios (artists Frank Buddingh, John Mignault, Stacy Miller, Kathy Rutsch and Scott Seaboldt) and Mateo Mattia/The Cobbler & Cordwainer (Matthew Demeo and David Ulan), to the private studios of artists Marie Hines Cowan, Jesse Sanchez, Patricia Miner-Sutherland, and Kyu Nam Han at Gallery Roc. Visual arts were also the focus at a variety of galleries that ranged from institutions like Iona College’s Brother Kenneth Chapman Gallery, The College of New Rochelle’s Castle Gallery and New Rochelle High School’s Museum of Arts & Culture, to independent galleries like Gallery Roc and transFORM. And then there were galleries in unexpected locations, like the new art space at Jolo’s Restaurant on Lawton Street featuring paintings by Alexandra Rutsch Brock, the walls of R Patisserie, and the H4H Gallery created at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore. The NRCA’s Rotunda Gallery even relocated its exhibit “The Arts of the Auto: Photography by Stephen Garnett” to AJ’s Burgers, right across the street from the Classic Car Show.

Some venues were minifestivals unto themselves: The Pelham Art Center had a combination of exhibits and programming that included a glass-blowing demonstration and yoga, as well as live music and free sample art classes, while the Lincoln Park Community Garden’s “Arts in the Park” event combined music, dance and food.

Beautiful weather—cool temperatures and plenty of sunshine— attracted visitors to ArtsFest outdoor venues like Hudson Park, where the Hudson Park Children’s Greenhouse committee offered free pumpkin painting that Saturday, and New York state Assemblywoman Amy Paulin presented a free concert on Sunday, Sept. 25 that was part of the nationwide Concert Across America to End Gun Violence. At Ruby Dee Park on Library Green, the spoken word was celebrated with WORDstock, featuring poets and playwrights and actors performing that afternoon.

This year’s ArtsFest also included an emphasis on movement—with local dance studios offering special classes and a free DanceFest performance— as well as filmmaking. There were free screenings of films from the Brooklyn Children’s Film Festival as well as student films created by teens in New Rochelle High School’s PAVE program, and the New Rochelle Public Library focused on films made in the Queen City including Terrytoons and silent movies from the Thanhouser Film Studio, which produced more than 1,000 films in New Ro-

chelle between 1909 and 1919.

“This is our eighth ArtsFest, and I think people really look forward to it,” she says. “Newcomers to New Rochelle don’t realize how the arts are woven into the fabric of this city. New Rochelle was known as an artist’s colony at the turn of the last century, and it continues to be a place that cares about the arts.

That’s where NRCA comes in: We have been the city’s premier arts organization for 40 years, serving as an umbrella organization and a resource, and as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization our mission is to continue to support arts and artists.”

Of course, an undertaking like ArtsFest requires lots of volunteers as well as financial support. Harrison haunted house supports wounded veteran

By FRANCO FINO Staff Writer The Consigliere family will commence their annual haunted house on Halloween, Oct. 31 to seek donations to support a wounded war veteran that suffered traumatic injuries in Afghanistan.

Following approval by the Town Council on Sept. 15, the Harrison-based family was granted permission to temporarily close down a partial section of Webster Avenue, between the corners of Ellsworth Avenue and Post Place, for their third annual haunted house.

Three years ago, the Consigliere family started the event as a way to support veteran, Cpl. Joshua Hotaling, 29, who on May 13, 2011, while serving as a Marine in Sangin, Afghanistan, was injured by an improvised explosive device, IED, bomb, which left him with traumatic

amputations of his legs and several hand-related injuries. Hotaling served alongside close friend and Harrison police officer, Rocky Consigliere, one of the founding members of the family’s haunted house.

“The most rewarding thing for me is to be able to tell Josh’s story,” said Rocky Consigliere. “He made such a sacrifice at a young age, and unfortunately his life was changed forever. For me, it’s important to do this every year to raise money so he can have a bit of a decent lifestyle.”

The haunted house, which is currently being built by several members of the Consigliere family, will feature six volunteer actors from the Rye Neck High School drama program, a number of individuals from the Consigliere family and friends of the family.

According to Dan Consigliere, a cousin of Rocky Consigliere who also organizes the event, the family raised $6,000 for Hotaling during last year’s event. “Last year, it got bigger and more people started paying attention, so we decided to advertise it,” he said. “This year, we’re making it even bigger with more costumes and actors.”

While the event currently does not have any local sponsorship from organizations within the community, Dan Consigliere mentioned that the family, which does not charge individuals to enjoy the haunted house, hopes that members of the community donate whatever they can to support the wounded veteran. “We strongly recommend donations for the cause,” he said. “We don’t want any credit either. We just want to show veterans that we care.”

Dan Consigliere also mentioned that he hopes this year’s outcome will lead to a possible expansion of the event for next year, in which they can raise money for more veterans. “As the years go on, we’d like to expand support not just to one single veteran, but for many other veterans too, as a little way of thanking them for putting their lives on the line year in and year out.”

The haunted house will be open between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31 at 86 Webster Ave., as of press time.

County senior dance and talent show Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino invites senior citizens to showcase their talents and dance the afternoon away at the annual Golden Harvest Dance and Talent Show on Wednesday, Oct. 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Westchester County Center in White Plains.

From 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., seniors can dance to the sounds of Stolen Moments Entertainment, who play the oldies, big band, Latin, salsa and more. The event will also include group and line

dances, ballroom dancing and dance instructions for salsa and merengue.

Doors open at 10:30 a.m. The event is open to all Westchester County senior citizens age 60 and older.

Replace smoke alarms every 10 years The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York, FASNY, is clanging the alarm with the message, “Don’t wait—check the date!”—the 2016 theme of the annual Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 9–15—promoting the importance of replacing smoke alarms every 10 years.

“Functioning smoke alarms reduce by half the risk of dying in a home fire, so it is extremely important to make sure they’re working properly,” said FASNY President Kenneth Pienkowski.

Pienkowski noted that families utilizing a 10-year-life smoke alarm in the home can remove a potentially high-danger component of human error from the reliability of alarms.

Statistics show that three out of five U.S. home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working alarms.

Homes with battery-disabled smoke alarms or alarms that have outlasted their full functionality put people at increased risk in the event of a home fire.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2017 in New York state, the sale of smoke-detecting devices powered by removable, replaceable batteries will be prohibited. Instead, retailers will be able to sell only smoke-detecting devices with a power source that isn't removable and lasts at least a decade. Increased availability of extended-life batteries and new

tamper-resistant smoke detectors is expected to help individuals and families better protect themselves and their loved ones. Existing devices already in homes will be allowed to remain there until they stop functioning, and smoke detectors with replaceable batteries will continue to be on sale in the state throughout 2016.

New York state law requires that all homes and businesses must have working smoke detectors. Smoke detectors with a 10-year lifespan are already on the market; most are powered by lithium batteries, not a traditional 9-volt.

FASNY, along with the approximately 110,000 volunteer firefighters in New York state and safety advocates nationwide, is joining forces during Fire Prevention Week to remind residents to take the following precautions: Smoke alarms: replace every 10 years.

• A smoke alarm’s age can be determined by looking on the back or side of the smoke alarm, where the date of manufacture can be found.

• Smoke alarms should be replaced 10 years from that date (not the date of purchase or installation). Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old—or sooner if they don’t respond properly.

Batteries: test monthly, replace yearly.

• Smoke alarms should be tested monthly, and batteries should be replaced when they begin to chirp, signaling that they’re running low.

Two-thirds of fire deaths occur in homes with no or nonfunctioning smoke alarms.

• Have at least one smoke alarm on every floor, including the basement and in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area.

• Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it.

Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record, with the president of the United States signing a proclamation declaring a national observance during that week every year since 1925. A disappointing farewell LIVE MIKE Mike Smith

Last Thursday, I trekked down to the Bronx to watch David Ortiz, my favorite major league player, in his final game against the New York Yankees.

But through the touching pregame ceremony, and the feeling of watching him on the field for the last time, I couldn’t shake the feeling that, as much as I would miss Big Papi, it wouldn’t be half as much as I missed the feeling of going to games at the old Yankee Stadium.

Don’t get me wrong. The new stadium, which opened its doors in 2009, is beautiful.

State-of-the-art facilities, huge video scoreboards, a number of higher-end dining options; it’s everything a fan should want in a venue.

But it’s just not the same.

Even for a Boston fan, head-

ing into the House that Ruth Built was always exhilarating.

The cramped, winding corridors, the smell of stale beer that hung around the place, that moment when you first laid your eyes on the roof’s famous façade as you made your way out from the bowels of the stadium?

There was a certain charm to the old place.

And a big part of that charm— for lack of a better word—came from the sort of Yankee fans who used to populate the place.

It used to be a badge of honor to wear my Red Sox finery to 153rd Street. I knew that once I set foot inside the cathedral of baseball, I’d have a whole lot of things flying at me—mostly taunts, but also the occasional half-eaten pretzel—as I headed into enemy territory to take my seat. I can still remember the way the entire stadium shook during the 2004 ALCS when Pedro Martinez took the mound in Game 2, and the Yankee faithful showered him with a chorus of

“Who’s your daddy?” chants.

Thursday night’s scene, however, was a far cry from that.

Of course, a lot of that has to do with the Yankees’ disappointing play this year. After an August surge, the Yanks struggled down the stretch and came into the game with the Red Sox barely clinging to their playoff hopes; they would be mathematically eliminated before the game was over.

The result was that I missed out on what could have been a tremendous experience, watching a stadium full of Yankee fans raining boos on the Red Sox slugger until potentially offering him a begrudging round of applause on his exit.

As it stood, the stadium was about half empty, with at least half of the fans in attendance decked out in Sox gear. A few old-school holdouts tried to whip the Bombers fans into an anti-Red Sox frenzy, but they just didn’t have it in them to muster up the same level of en-

mity for the Red Sox that was commonplace just 10 short years ago.

But even if the building and the atmosphere will never be the quite same, there is some hope that one day, we might see something approximating the good old days of this rivalry.

On my way out of the stadium after the game, an older Yankee fan—no doubt inspired by more than a few of the stadium’s $12 beers—told me, in no uncertain terms, that the Red Sox stunk.

Honestly, it warmed my heart.

I walked up to him with a smile on my face, wished his

team the best of luck in the playoffs, and headed on out the door.

Maybe there’s still a lit of the old Bronx still alive; we just need to make Yankee Stadium great again.

New Rochelle got goals from Sydney Jasper and Ruby Hastie who have powered the Huguenot offense this year, and Alexa Ostrager filled in admirably in the net, making four saves on the afternoon.

most anticipated football matchup of the weekend, two unbeaten teams squared off as the Huguenots traveled up north to take on the Rams. By the time the final whistle sounded however, the Huguenots had done enough to keep their perfect season intact, outclassing Clarkstown despite committing a whopping six turnovers.

Romeo Holden led the way for the Huguenots with 75 rushing yards, 89 receiving yards and four touchdowns, as the highpowered New Rochelle offense did enough to overcome a few costly miscues. Holden caught touchdown passes from both Jonathan Saddler and Keion Hiland-Jones, as the Huguenots’ two-quarterback rotation continues to find success in the passing game.

New Rochelle will look to improve to 6-0 on the season when it hosts longtime rival White Plains on Saturday, Oct. 8.
