WHAT IS

The Citadel Brigadier Foundation (TCBF) serves as the driving force of private funds for The Citadel Athletics.

We are responsible for engaging alumni, fans, and loyal supporters of our institution in order to generate resources that enrich the experience of our cadetathletes and provide coaches and staff with missioncritical support vital for competing at the highest level of college athletics.

With the tremendous support of our passionate donors, we are able to assist in providing necessary opportunities for our more than 350 cadet-athletes to succeed in the classroom, on the field, and in life!

On behalf of more than 350 cadet-athletes, coaches, and staff, THANK YOU for your support of The Citadel Brigadier Foundation and The Citadel Athletics. We asked much of Bulldog Nation this past year, and you delivered during a time distinctly unique to our 180-year history. Whether purchasing cutouts, philanthropically donating your tickets, or stepping up financially through your gifts to TCBF, your generosity and commitment to this institution serve as a constant reminder of how grateful, humbled, and proud I am to be a Bulldog. Because of you, we were able to continue our mission in providing opportunities for cadet-athletes to become principled leaders - centered on The Citadel’s core values of Honor, Duty, and Respect - and to succeed in the classroom, on the field, and in life.

The resolve of our cadet-athletes, coaches, and campus leadership to remain steadfast, rallying around each other to stay focused on shared priorities, was only achieved by the unwavering support of Bulldog Nation.

Despite the challenges of the 2020-21 year, The Bulldogs persevered in the classroom with more than 75 cadet-athletes receiving their degrees, each athletic program achieving a team GPA of 3.2 or higher in the Spring RUSSELL 2021 semester and a conference-leading 41 4.0 GPAs for the entire FRIERSON ‘04 academic year, just to name a few highlights.

THE “MAJOR OF ST. LO” VICTORY FUND

The Major of St. Lo Victory Fund is new in 2022. Philanthropic in nature, the Victory Fund was established to provide the critical resources necessary to elevate The Citadel to competitive levels in the Southern Conference and nationally.

ABOUT MAJOR THOMAS DRY HOWIE ’29

Thomas Dry Howie enrolled at The Citadel in September 1925 and graduated in June of 1929 having been captain of the baseball team, a member of the boxing team, and a star halfback on the football team. Howie led the Bulldogs to an upset over Clemson in 1928. He was also his Senior Class President.

In 1940 he entered active service in the Virginia National Guard, 2nd Battalion, 116th Infantry, 29th Division. Thomas Howie rose rapidly to the rank of major and became “one of the best-beloved battalion leaders in the American Army.” Major Howie was killed July 17, 1944, while breaking through the Nazi wall to relieve another battalion of his regiment that was encircled on the outskirts of St. Lo, the eastern hinge of the German battle line. By taking the high ground dominating the approaches to the city, his men sealed its fall, and as a gesture honoring him and his battalion, his body was carried in state through the streets of the fallen city. Major Howie was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and the French Legion of Honor. He is buried at the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-Sur-Mer. The 1928 jersey picture above belonged to Major Thomas Howie. This jersey was worn the year he led the Bulldogs to an upset over Clemson.

STAND FOREVER ATHLETIC ENDOWMENT

In 2021, the decision was made to change the name of the athletic endowment from the Memorial Fund to the Stand Forever Athletic Endowment. This decision was made to clearly define the depth and meaning of the impact you make when choosing to endow a scholarship for a Citadel cadet-athlete. Because the principal of your gift remains intact, with the proceeds providing an ongoing source of support, your endowment lives on forever, supporting the Bulldogs for generations to come and embodying the words from our Alma Mater, “Stand forever, yielding never.”

WAYS TO GIVE

STAND FOREVER ATHLETIC ENDOWMENT

The Stand Forever Athletic Endowment (previously the Memorial Fund) serves as The Citadel Brigadier Foundation’s Athletic Scholarship Endowment. Establishing an endowed scholarship provides a permanent stream of financial support that directly benefits cadet-athletes and creates a legacy that will support The Citadel Athletics now and in perpetuity. Endowed scholarships may be established with a minimum gift or pledge of $25,000 through a single gift or through installments paid over a period of time mutually agreed upon by the donor and TCBF.

BECOME A TCBF MEMBER

Joining TCBF as an annual member supports the most immediate and vital needs of our 350 cadet-athletes. All TCBF Membership gifts count toward football seating and parking donation requirements as well as your annual giving benefits in 2022. Renewing your annual TCBF Membership is one of the best ways to help us continue our positive momentum in 2022. There is strength in numbers, and we need ALL of Bulldog Nation to make a difference! LEGACY GIVING

Including The Citadel Athletics in your financial or estate plan is a powerful way to create a lasting legacy that will help carry out the mission of The Citadel for many years to come. Legacy giving can offer significant tax benefits and eligibility to be inducted into The Citadel Legacy Society. You can name TCBF as the beneficiary of a will, trust, retirement account, or life insurance policy or create a charitable gift annuity and designate your gift to TCBF, the Stand Forever Athletic Endowment, or the Victory Fund.THE

The Victory Fund is a vital unrestricted annual fund that supports more than 350 Bulldog cadet-athletes across 16 sports. All tax-deductible gifts to the Victory Fund directly impact the cadet-athlete experience by allowing TCBF and The Citadel Athletics the flexibility and innovation to provide the necessary resources to recruit the nation’s best athletes and coaches. Your contributions provide critical funding of the immediate needs of The Citadel Athletics including scholarship and academic support, sport specific needs, sports medicine, nutrition advancements, leadership development, facility construction and renovations, and other operations that will give those select few who choose The Citadel an unparalleled collegiate experience.

Fans can purchase new or renew their current season tickets for The Citadel Football season by contacting The Citadel Ticket office at any time. Note: If you are renewing your season tickets, your seat(s) will be held in your 2021 locations until the ticket renewal deadline on April 1st, 2022.

All West Midfield Sections (Sections H, G, and F) and the Pearson Club Level require a donation in addition to the price of season tickets. TCBF Donors are given priority when requesting new seating or additional seating/seat changes.

Located on the 4 Floor on the West Side of JHS, the Pearson Club Level offers 470 partially covered padded outdoor seats, access to a large indoor hospitality area with flat-screen televisions, private restrooms, a catered meal (included in cost), and access to purchase alcoholic and other beverages at two private bars. Opens 2 hours prior to kickoff.

Located on the 5th and 6th Floors on the West Side of JHS, Executive Suites have 16 Seats - 12 outdoor covered and padded seats and 4 indoor bar seats, an entertainment area with a flat-screen television, leather couches and chairs, a refrigerator for beverage storage, bar space for catered food, and cabinet space for storage of personal items. Opens 2 hours prior to kickoff.

ALTMAN ATHLETIC CENTER

Located at the Southside End Zone, TCBF Members at the General Level ($3,500) and above are eligible to receive Altman Center Passes as a benefit of their TCBF Membership. Amenities include access to a large indoor hospitality area as well as the outdoor balcony overlooking Sansom Field. Flat-screen televisions, private restrooms, a catered meal (included in cost), and alcoholic/non-alcoholic beverages are available for purchase at the private indoor bar. Opens 1.5 hours before kickoff.

WHEN IS MY ANNUAL CONTRIBUTION DUE?

TCBF Membership year begins January 1st and runs through December 31st. While gifts are accepted throughout the year, we recommend submitting your TCBF Membership donation by May 31st (to take advantage of baseball parking, please make your donation prior to the season start). Making your contribution by this deadline will ensure you enjoy all benefits for that year’s athletic season. To note: Any tickets or benefits associated with a required donation will not be sent to the donor until the donation is paid or a payment plan is in place.

CAN I PAY MY GIFT TO TCBF IN INSTALLMENTS?

Yes. Payment plans may be set up for any and all gifts to meet your specific needs.

Annual Membership pledges must be completed by December 31st of the giving year.

DO I HAVE TO BE A SEASON TICKET HOLDER OR AN ALUMNUS TO JOIN TCBF?

No. Regardless of whether or not you attend athletics events, your support allows us to continue to give The Citadel cadet-athletes a quality experience. We welcome all alumni, parents, and friends to join at any level or contribute to the Stand Forever Fund, the Victory Fund, specific sport, or area of interest that they are most passionate about. Every donation makes a difference!

DOES MY DONATION TO TCBF COUNT TOWARDS MY OVERALL CLASS GIVING NUMBERS DURING MY CLASS REUNION CAMPAIGN YEARS?

Yes. Any gifts made to TCBF (scholarship contribution, TCBF Membership, special athletic projects, legacy giving, etc.) will count towards the overall giving goal for your class. Please contact your TCF Class Reunion Campaign development officer for any questions.

CAN I CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS AN EXISTING SCHOLARSHIP?

Yes. If you are not ready to start your own and would like to contribute towards an exisiting scholarship, you may do so. You may also make a contribution “In Memory of” or “In Honor of” an individual by designating your gift to the Brigadier Fund or to a specific scholarship within the Stand Forever Athletic Endowment. Please include the scholarship name with your donation. Call (843) 953-5277 if you have questions about the specific scholarship name.

CAN I DESIGNATE MY COMPANY MATCH TO TCBF?

Yes. Many companies nationwide (and, in some cases, those of retirees or spouses) will match an employee’s gift to TCBF. To find out if your employer will match your gift, contact your human resources department or visit our website.

Please note: Gifts made for your TCBF Membership are typically not eligible for a matching gift; however, philanthropic donations not associated with ticket and parking benefits may still be eligible. Please check your employer’s criteria for more information.

IS MY CONTRIBUTION TAX-DEDUCTIBLE?

All contributions that are not benefit-related, such as gifts to individual donor-named endowments, capital projects, sport-specific funds, etc. are tax-deductible. The Citadel Brigadier Foundation will issue an acknowledgment for all such contributions.

Donors will also receive a tax receipt for eligible gifts. All seat-related giving and premium seating are not tax-deductible per federal tax law.

Donors to The Citadel Brigadier Foundation adhere to and abide by the rules and regulations concerning intercollegiate athletics as determined by the NCAA, the Southern Conference, and The Citadel. Should questions arise concerning the various rules and regulations, donors acknowledge they should contact The Citadel Athletics compliance office at (843) 953-4872.

Donors agree that should they be found by the NCAA or college to have violated, knowingly or without regard for the same, rules or regulations, they may be disassociated from the college, athletics program, and its activities.
