A Message from the Publisher COMING FULL CIRCLE t was in the early days of COVID-19 that articles were prepared and layout work was being done for the very first issue of THE CIRCLE | VANCOUVER MAGAZINE. Launched in June with delivery of the Print Edition held up until July due to the pandemic, we were greeted with an audience ready for something beautiful, a window into a world not only exclusive, but now physically inaccessible due to lockdowns and government restrictions. One year later, we are pleased to be Vancouver’s premier showcase for high horology, the finest limited edition writing instruments, the city’s best cuisine and the connoisseurial lifestyle. Perhaps our first Guest Contributor and dear friend, Nino Marino (the former President and co-founder of Delta, and current President of the Maiora Pen Company and Nettuno 1911) said it best when he wrote: “THE CIRCLE | VANCOUVER MAGAZINE is a fascinating conceptualization of beauty that gives life to objects and ‘things’ capable of telling extraordinary stories. It is inspired by the concept of BEAUTY, the pleasure of discovering wonders and exciting stories, even just to give a dream, or a pleasant distraction.” This gracious observation encapsulates our core principles and approach in, perhaps, the most noble mission statement we could embrace. Giuseppe Aquila A CONVERSATION WITH THE CEO OF MONTEGRAPPA THE CIRCLE | VANCOUVER asks Montegrappa’s passionate CEO about the company his family has directed for generations, the future of the fountain pen industry and what inspires him.
Unknown to many people, Montegrappa is actually a nib-maker and a penmaker, which distinguishes it from many other pen manufacturers. Can you tell us a little about this aspect of Montegrappa’s heritage and how you are preserving it? Indeed, the company that we know today as Montegrappa opened its doors in 1912 as Italy’s first nib makers. The onset of the World War I saw it quickly expand into fountain pens, when writing products were deemed essential to the war effort. Our factory has been manufacturing fountain pens continuously ever since.

Our decision to bring nib making back in-house during 2021 reflects an urge to connect with our past, but it also forms part of a larger goal to optimise our sustainability profile. We have been working for several years to localise our supply chain, both through developing our own capability and by collaborating with companies close to Bassano del Grappa. Agility is another aspect. Since the launch of our Configurator platform in 2018, uniqueness without compromise has become an important pillar of our offering and reputation. Naturally, at the core of our decision to reintroduce nibs is our conviction that that we can do it better. Nibs are not easy to make: they are the nerve centre of a fountain pen, and require large investments in machinery and materials. Fortunately, the access we have to world-class artisanal expertise in northern Italy enables us to start from a very high level, and hopefully bring something new to the equation. Sometimes innovation does not come through a change in culture but a refinement of its expression. How do you perceive innovation unfolding in the pen making industry over the next 50 years? Certainly, technology’s contribution to manufacturing and relationship-building points to increasing levels of collaboration between manufacturers and their customers. We think the trend towards custom and bespoke production is deep-seated because they bring luxury manufacturers back to their original promise, which is to make the customer feel special. We are only at the beginning of this journey, if you imagine that technologies like augmented reality and 3D scanning are still relatively narrowly available. Ironically, the recent proliferation of digital devices has only heightened the analogue charm of writing instruments. It might be naïve to expect a continuation of this trend without consequences, but would you bet on the keyboard, stylus or mouse being more useful than pens in fifty, twenty or even ten years? Pens are intrinsic to human learning and expression, but the distinctions between analogue and digital devices will surely blur as things continue to evolve.

You have said that you are personally involved in the development of new products. What do you look for in the subjects you consider for your limited and special edition collections? For us, the sweet spot is usually a blend of timeliness and scope for artistic expression. Our Raffaello collection was released to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Raphael’s death, and allows us to showcase special, in-house skills such as hand-painting and avant-garde design. Social causes offer a different kind of timeliness, and we have several collaborations in development in a similar vein to Victory of the Whale, which was created with Sea Shepherd – founded of course by a Canadian. A very important impulse is our desire to show leadership in design and engineering, which brings novel materials and solutions into play. Here I think back to our Q1 Limited Edition from 2015, which was made from titanium and leather and featured a multi-colour ink magazine. Since then, we have always been very open to ideas that suggest a level of magic at work. Current products like Viking and Moon Landing L.E. are a continuation of that spirit.

Products developed with names like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter compare with themed pens like Grappa and Cigar. Both help bring Montegrappa to the attention of those who care deeply about their passion. Within communities like these, our joie de vivre and attention to detail come across very well, and helps us create and reinforce relationships. You have studied a broad range of subjects in your own education, covering humanities, computer science and business administration. What areas of personal interest do you derive your passion from as you shape and direct Montegrappa? I’ve always been passionate about the mechanics of how things work. This translates into the way we bring external engineering and design ideas into the realm of writing. Watches are a big area of interest – both from a mechanical and cultural standpoint. In recent years we have worked on increasing our profile within the horological community, particularly with our Configurator platform and the design ethos of the ZERO Custom. Literature and the arts are another big passion: fortunately, these are inextricable from the Italian identity our products project. I mentioned Raphael earlier, and we are on the cusp of launching a new series to honour the life and work of Dante Alighieri, who died in 1321. Our Icons and Genio Creativo collector series are other domains where creative accomplishment can be elegantly expressed through a writing instrument. Master of Time, Master of the Moment F. P. JOURNE’S INVENTIVE WRITING COLLECTION We uncover the little known but extraordinary writing collection of legendary independent Swiss watchmaker, F. P. Journe.
ike many true geniuses, it was a young François-Paul Journe who began drawing new time measuring instruments long before anyone in the world of high horology knew his name. Sought after by the world’s most discerning watch collectors, and revered by his peers as a legend in his own time, François-Paul has built his reputation on the development of unique timepieces, crafted with his trademark aesthetic. Always exploring new concepts, François-Paul turned to the tools of his trade – not as a watchmaker, but as a watch designer – to create a limited edition writing collection with the same technical prowess and finishing as his exclusive timepieces.

Wanting the ease of a capless fountain pen, François-Paul Journe set out to design a retractable nib mechanism with a self-sealing aperture, unique to anything previously created. Now protected by patent number EP 07 405119.4, this mechanism is comprised of a retractable nib, operated from the barrel cap, with a closure of six flaps resembling the petals of a flower. The complete writing collection includes a capless fountain pen and a rollerball, crafted in platinum PT950 or 18-karat gold and titanium, and finished entirely by hand in the finest guilloché. Distinguishing the platinum models within this collection is a blue lacquer coating, with a naturalcoloured lacquer on the 18-karat gold and titanium models to protect their surfaces and to create a smoother finish. irst created in 1932 by Louis Cartier for the Pasha of Marrakech, the Pasha debuted as an innovation in water-resistance, fulfilling the Pasha’s request for a timepiece he could wear while swimming. In its 89-year history, the Pasha de Cartier has become one of the Maison’s most iconic wristwatch models. Updated with Cartier’s in-house calibre 1847 MC automatic movement, the Pasha continues in Cartier’s heritage of innovation, with an escapement made of non-magnetic nickel phosphorus components and a case-integrated paramagnetic alloy. Retaining its first innovation, the screw-down crown cover gives the Pasha its water-resistance to a depth of 10 bar (approximately 100 metres). The new Pasha de Cartier models are available in steel, yellow gold and pink gold (as well as being diamond-set) with the traditional guilloché dial giving way to a structurally integrated dial in its dramatically skeletonized version bearing the automatic calibre 9624 MC. irst released in 2015 as the Ref. 5524G, the new, medium-sized Patek Philippe Ref. 7234G-001 Calatrava Pilot Travel Time draws inspiration from two aviator’s watches produced by the firm in 1936 (historically important for their unique siderometer, or hour-angle function, which was used by pilots to determine their exact position). Featuring Patek Philippe’s Travel Time system, a second time zone can be displayed using the two pushers found on the left-hand case flank – with the lower pusher moving the luminous local-time hour hand clockwise or the upper pusher moving it counter-clockwise. In its normal position, the luminous hour hand is superimposed on a skeletonized hand which remains in its place to indicate home time. In this way the second time zone cand be adjusted seamlessly by one hour increments, without interrupting the function of the minute or second hands. Day and night indicators can be found at 3 o’clock for home time and 9 o’clock for local time, respectively. The Ref. 7234G-001 Calatrava Pilot Travel Time comes in an 18-karat white gold case, measuring 37.5 mm, and is intended for both men or women. n a celebration of the feminine, the new Legacy Machine FlyingT collection from MB&F introduces luxurious new materials to the independent watchmaker’s trademark mechanical aesthetic, creating backdrops of diamonds and lapis lazuli for their displays of horological engineering. Sitting atop what MB&F calls a ‘dynamic column,’ the flying tourbillon takes centre stage beneath its dramatic sapphire crystal dome, set with a single large diamond which rotates with the tourbillon’s cage. Mounted beneath the tourbillon, at an inclination of 50°, a small dial covered with black or white lacquer, or lapis lazuli, displays the time with blued serpentine hands. “I wanted LM FlyingT to possess the epitome of femininity as reflected by the women in my life, particularly my mother,” says Maximilian Büsser. “It had to combine supreme elegance with tremendous vitality. The column-like structure of the flying tourbillon was very important to me as I felt very strongly that women form the pillar of humanity. At the same time, there is another layer of meaning coming in from the sun-shaped rotor, which incorporates the element of lifegiving, a source of sustenance which we gravitate towards and around.”

Honouring the 10th anniversary of the Horological Machine No 4 series first launched in 2010, MB&F have released their original proto-type of the iconic model, dubbed the HM No 4 Kittyhawk. With its twin aeronautically-inspired jet-turbine-styled pods, this pièce unique boasts an entirely in-house ‘engine,’ designed and developed over three years with Laurent Besse and Beranger Reynard, and comprised of 311 components specifically made for the HM No 4. Powered by two mainspring barrels, the HM No 4 has 72 hours of power reserve, indicated by the dial on the left pod and recharged by winding its crown. On the right pod, arrow-tipped Super-LumiNova® filled hands indicate the hours and minutes, and can be adjusted by its crown. Between the two pods a crystal cover requiring more than 185 hours of machining and polishing give a glimpse at the HM No 4’s innerworkings. Not just a timepiece, this sculptured work of ‘kinetic art’ is a legend in its own time. Never content with their accomplishments, Maximilian Büsser and Friends have also been diligently creating a new legend, reviving the Horological Machine No 9 platform first released in 2018 with an all new sapphire crystal shell to showcases what Büsser calls, “The most beautiful movement we’ve created to date.”

Within the sculpted corundum sapphire crystal case of the HM9-SV, the mechanical ‘engine’ averages the timekeeping of two, fully independent, cantilevered balances through a differential, the movement’s gearbox, which then displays the synthesized time on the perpendicular dial. Where its predecessors were given themes like ‘Air’ and ‘Road,’ the HM9-SV’s brief is decidedly nautical, with a patented three-dimensional rubber gasket from the original HM9 sealing the tripartite case. New to the Sapphire Vision is a proprietary high-tech bonding compound which fuses the sapphire crystals to the metal frame using a vacuum and high temperatures, giving water resistance to 3 ATM (30 m) of water pressure. The HM9 Sapphire Vision will come in four editions with five pieces each: two editions with an 18-karat red gold frame and NAC-coated black or PVD-coated blue engine; and two editions with an 18-karat white gold frame and PVD-coated purple or red gold-plated engine. ounded in 1957 by powerboat racing enthusiast Henri Jeanneau, the Jeanneau Shipyard, in Les Herbiers, France, produced its first fiberglass hull in 1958. “In the beginning, we built three boats a week. It was very artisanal,” recalls naval architect Robert Rigaudeau. “Fibreglass became the material of choice, definitively.” Today, the shipyard is a part of the Bénéteau Group, with an impressive history building both sailing and motor yachts, even manufacturing two replicas of “Pierre 1er” for the film, Waterworld,

ell known as Vancouver’s premier enclave for business and social gatherings, the members-only world of the Terminal City Club is described as a ‘labyrinth,’ extending from its grand foyer and central staircase to four floors of amenities, lounges and dining venues. With offerings as diverse as the Lion’s Pub, a British-style pub open to the public, to the sophisticated Cuvée, the club offers destinations as diverse as the occasions for which we gather. In the 1892 bistro, members can enjoy an elegant lunch, or gather at The Grill for a casual summer dinner with friends. As with all establishments which host people across the city, the country and around the world, the Terminal City Club has had to adapt to the COVID-19 reality, and is temporarily offering only one menu, with limited access to dining facilities. Currently available are soups and appetizers like the club’s Pacific Fish Chowder or grilled scallops and pork belly (garnished with truffle gastrique and an apple hazelnut salad) with more casual plates including a 6 oz angus beef chuck burger, topped with the club’s signature sauce. Health-conscious diners can indulge with the TCC Roasted Cauliflower Chimichurri Bowl, which includes lentils, black beans, marinated tomato, avocado, purple cabbage slaw, pickled onion, cilantro and kale chimichurri; or the North Arm Farm Beets salad with beluga lentils, yuzu aioli, watercress, grapefruit and Aleppo spiced fried lentils. Main dishes include staples like the sunchoke and chorizo seasoned 12 oz ribeye, and offer a beautiful variety of local seafood, like the Citrus Glazed Wild Spring Salmon, served with mint pea quinoa risotto, lemon mascarpone, confit tomato, broccoli and arugula. A tantalizing Poached Haida Gwaii Halibut is also available with a tomato consommé, grilled zucchini, capers, white anchovy, oregano and champagne grapes. And guests are welcome to warm up on a cold Vancouver evening with a scallop and prawn hot pot, made with grilled scallops and sauteed prawns, Thai coconut yellow curry, bok choy, black rice and pickled watermelon. And not to be missed, the club’s Sunday special is a very English slow roasted prime rib. For dessert, a sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and d’oro vanilla gelato beckon. Other evening enticements include a sweet potato custard and a flourless chocolate lava cake, served warm with vanilla gelato, caramel, and sesame crunch. Founded in the mid-1930’s by Zino Davidoff, Switzerland’s own ‘King of Cigars,’ this cigar making house has distinguished itself by its high standards of quality and by cultivating is own tobacco plants, tailored to the Dominican Republic’s diverse tobacco growing regions. The Last Word LIFE CYCLES Reflecting on one year of THE CIRCLE | VANCOUVER and the re-released Cartier Pasha, a watch instrumental in fostering my own early love for horology.
t was the year 1999, and David Oscarson had just released the Henrik Wigstrom – a pen which transformed the landscape of the fine writing instrument world by raising the bar of quality and craftsmanship, as Michel Perchin had done before. A young man in high school, I was visiting Brinkhaus, in the Hotel Vancouver, to explore the world of jewellery, fine writing instruments and horology so exquisitely curated by its owner, Gisela. Even after so many years, I still remember the moment when a young sales associate handed me a Cartier Pasha, explaining to me the screw-down crown cover. The guilloché almost shimmered beneath the sapphire crystal, giving a sense of depth to the dial. Holding, handling and wearing the watch conveyed the true quality and craftsmanship of the piece, more than the digital articles and videos of today ever could. It was in moments like these, hearing the story behind a piece from a knowledgeable associate or passionate boutique owner, that the meaning and beauty of these pieces were shared. Here we gained entry to the world of collectors, a world in which value is not based on grey market resale prices or popular demand, but on the pedigree and provenance of a tradition of craftsmanship, materials and design. It is the human story which gives significance to the pieces we collect, often archaically transmitted like the oral traditions of an indigenous tribe and shaped by one’s own sentimental experiences. This is why we chose to build a community of collectors around the magazine. Creating THE CIRCLE | CONNOISSEURS, we envisioned a place where collectors, creators and local boutique managers could enjoy the human contact which makes the often solitary and private art of collecting a social experience.
