Thank you! A huge thanks to our donors, volunteers and staff! Your efforts helped CBI provide services in 2012 to over 6000 children and youth who have been abused, neglected or abandoned in Utah, regionally and in several countries, including 1,248 children in the Christmas Box Houses, over 3,800 through other CBI programs, and 1,008 children during the holiday Giving Tree Project. We kicked off the year with a wonderful donation of over $102,000 from the Riverton High School holiday fundraiser. We increased our presence in the child welfare community with an In-Home Services partnership with DCFS supporting children at risk of being removed from their homes. CBI gained a new partner at the Ogden Christmas Box House with Monarch Counseling, a group of child therapists serving children in our facility and the community. The expansion of Christmas Box Rooms and Clubs continues with a new volunteer club and resource room in northern Utah Valley. We reorganized our operations structure and added two new staff in development and community outreach. CBI also saw an increase of donations from individuals of nearly 20%. We held a new 5K race event, The Village Run, to raise funds for older youth aging out of foster care. This all happened from the generosity of our donors and volunteers, because‌every child deserves a childhood! Sincerely,

Richard Paul Evans Founder and Chairman

Our mission

Our motto is simple. Every child deser ves a childhood. The Christmas Box International partners with local, national and international communities and groups to prevent child abuse and to improve the quality of life for children who have been abused or neglected.

Seven-year-old Ally started to cringe the moment

her foot touched the stirrup, her shoulders locked in fear. Two short trots later and she demanded to be taken down. Riding a horse was scary! But this was not over, not yet. Ally was going to ride that horse.

Moments after telling staff she wanted to try again, she was back in the saddle. Literally. Ally’s little brother was placed in front of her and a friend from the Christmas Box House sitting behind. Hugging her little brother, her wide eyes and toothy smile said it all, that she did it. She got back on the horse. For all the children served by The Christmas Box International, your donation did more than provide Ally with a safe environment and new clothes and shoes. Because of your commitment to children in need, she was given the chance to have an experience, to create a childhood memory.

Our programs

The Christmas Box Houses Our three facilities serve as emergency children’s shelters, as well as a family support center in Moab, to communities across Utah, with locations in Salt Lake City, Ogden and Moab. Our Christmas Box Houses assist children who have been abused, neglected or abandoned by providing crisis shelter care, access to educational and therapeutic resources, medical and dental care, and recreational opportunities.

Our doors are open 365 days of the year. # Children Served

“Did you know that elephants are real?” That was the question 5-year-old Noah, a child who stayed at The Christmas Box House in Ogden, told staff members after his first trip to the circus. Whether children are going to a ballgame or seeing a play, we care about their experience beyond the four walls of our houses. Every child deserves a childhood, even if it is as simple as seeing a real elephant.

The Christmas Box Rooms Also known as community resource rooms, The Christmas Box Rooms (CBR) serve at-risk children and teens by providing partnering agencies and nonprofits access to new clothes, car seats, hygiene items, books, diapers, toys, etc. Salt Lake CBR Ogden CBR

“Whenever I feel like I want to give up, I think about all of those people who helped me and didn’t even know me.” — 17-year-old teen boy who was adopted after years in foster care

The Lifestart Initiative The Lifestart Initiative serves teens transitioning from the foster care system to adult living. The program provides teens with a Lifestart Box filled with basic home necessities. The move-in kits contain roughly $130 worth of supplies and household items, and include everything from a can opener to sheets to pots and pans. CBI also supports programs aimed to assist teens in foster care, including the Utah State Youth Summit, the Division of Youth Services (DYS) Milestone Houses and the Utah Youth Mentor Project’s Christmas Holiday Retreat. Transitioning to Adult Living (TAL) youth served in 2012:

Giving Tree Project The Giving Tree Project provides holiday gifts for at-risk youth in December. Children and teens receiving In-Home Services through the Division of Child and Family Services, as well as those staying at our Christmas Box Houses and the DYS Teen Group Homes, benefit from this program. Donations also help fill the Christmas Box Rooms.

At-Risk Youth served in 2012: More than 3,700 children were served, including through our partnering organizations and distributing donations throughout the year through our Christmas Box Houses and Christmas Box Rooms. 409 children in the Ogden area

149 children in the Utah County area

410 children in the Salt Lake area

International Efforts Through generous in-kind donations of toys, clothing and hygiene items, we are able to share our resources with children across the globe, including: Haiti, Taiwan, India, the Philippines and the Congo. In 2012, The Christmas Box International touched the lives of 518 children in developing nations. A young girl in the Taiwan foster care system was receiving support through CBI, but she still suffered from cerebral palsy. Her elderly foster mother was becoming unable to continue care. After seeing the girl’s picture hanging on a Christmas Box International volunteer’s fridge, a Utah family made the decision to adopt. She now receives specialized physical therapy and is able to walk with the use of crutches.

The Christmas Box Clubs (CBC) and Volunteers The Christmas Box Clubs are groups of individuals who regularly volunteer to help children who have been abused or neglected. Clubs work with children at The Christmas Box Houses (CBH), hold clothing drives, organize fundraising events, and support mentor programs. The Christmas Box Angel Statues Every year, we partner with this separate program, which dedicates memorial angel statues to cemeteries around the country. Six statues were placed in 2012, for a total of 120 since 1994. Every year on December 6, a service is held at each location for families who have lost a child. For a complete list of locations, visit www.richardpaulevans.com.
