THANK YOU! Every year my heart is warmed by the generosity of our donors. Your efforts helped CBI provide services in 2013 to nearly 6,500 children and youth who have been abused, neglected or abandoned in Utah, regionally and in several countries, including some 1700 children through the Christmas Box Houses, and over 3600 through other CBI programs. We had the greatest number of children served ever by our holiday giving program Project Elf — 1,156 children! We were able to increase our assistance of youth aging out of foster care and transitioning to life on their own through our Lifestart Box move-in kits, support of transitional housing and helping with the annual Youth Leadership Summit. We kicked off the year with a wonderful donation of more than $37,000 from the Herriman High School holiday fundraiser. Another focus this year was to increase awareness of our services to the community and increase our fundraising. We participated in the first ever Love Utah Give Utah statewide fundraiser sponsored by the Community Foundation of Utah. We continue to find new ways to serve this population of children, whether in foster or kinship care, or still at home but at risk of removal. All of this happened through the generosity of our donors and volunteers, because‌every child deserves a childhood! Sincerely,

Richard Paul Evans Founder and Chairman

Our Mission

Our motto is simple. Every child deser ves a childhood. The Christmas Box International partners with local, national and international communities and groups to prevent child abuse and to improve the quality of life for children who have been abused or neglected.

Every day we see heroes. We see heroes in our volunteers, our donors, and especially in the children we serve. That was true for 6-year-old Blake. Turning six years old is a big deal, even more so when you’ve never celebrated a birthday before. We didn’t want to miss a moment of Blake’s sixth birthday. His party had everything from ice cream cake to a brand new football and scooter. It even had an extra-awesome, super guest stop by, none other than The Batman! We hope Blake always remembers this birthday celebration, and not because he was in a shelter. Instead, we hope he remembers meeting a real life superhero, eating two whole pieces of cake, and unwrapping his very first birthday present. As Batman once said, “A hero can be anyone, even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat on a young boy’s shoulders to let him know the world hadn’t ended.”

Our pROGRAMS

The Christmas Box Houses Our three facilities serve as emergency children’s shelters, as well as a family support center in Moab, to communities across Utah, with locations in Salt Lake City, Ogden and Moab. Our Christmas Box Houses assist children who have been abused, neglected or abandoned by providing crisis shelter care, access to educational and therapeutic resources, medical and dental care, and recreational opportunities.

Our doors are open 365 days of the year. # Children Served

“What’s a s’more?” Jessica asked the question as she watched volunteers stack piles of Hershey’s candy bars, marshmallows and graham crackers onto a picnic table. Eight-year-old Jessica, a child who stayed at The Christmas Box House this year, learned all about this summer pastime, happily devouring the gooey mess. We believe every child deserves moments like this, whether that means learning to ride a bike or getting a brand new outfit for school. Every child deserves a childhood, even if it is as simple as taking that first bite into a perfectly made s’more.

“There are a lot of kids who feel like they are lost when they age out, that they don’t know who they are because they never had chance to find themselves.” — 19-year-old teen girl who aged out of foster care

The Lifestart Initiative The Lifestart Initiative serves teens transitioning from the foster care system to adult living. The program provides teens with a Lifestart Box filled with new basic home necessities. The move-in kits contain roughly $130 worth of supplies and household items, and include everything from a can opener to sheets to pots and pans. CBI also supports programs aimed to assist teens in foster care, including the Utah Statewide Youth Summit, the Salt Lake County Division of Youth Services (DYS) Milestone Houses and The Youth Mentor Project’s Christmas Holiday Retreat.

Project Elf Project Elf provides holiday gifts for at-risk youth in December. Children and teens receiving In-Home Services through the Division of Child and Family Services and Salt Lake County DYS, as well as children staying at our Christmas Box Houses, the DYS Teen Group Homes, international programs and those raised by relatives through partnering agencies benefit from this program. Donations also help fill the Christmas Box Rooms. More than 4,600 children were served, including those through our partnering organizations and distributing donations year-round from our Christmas Box Houses and Christmas Box Rooms. At-risk youth served Christmas morning in 2013: 575 children in the Ogden area

125 children in the Utah County area

366 children in the Salt Lake area

90 children in the Moab and St. George area

International Efforts Through generous in-kind donations of toys, clothing and hygiene items, we are able to share our resources with children across the globe, including: Haiti, Taiwan, India, Kenya and the Congo. In 2013, The Christmas Box International touched the lives of 425 children in developing nations. In Kenya, a serious health issue can be solved with something as simple as socks and flip flops. One example is the jigger, a type of small flea that embeds itself into the skin under the toenail to lay its eggs. This parasite can cause infections, permanent deformation of toes, severe pain and even death. With a new pair of socks, the children we serve can avoid this ongoing health concern in the region.

The Christmas Box Clubs (CBC) and Volunteers The Christmas Box Clubs are groups of individuals who regularly volunteer to help children who have been abused or neglected. Clubs work with children at The Christmas Box Houses (CBH), hold clothing drives, assist with fundraising events, and support mentor programs. The Christmas Box Angel Statues Every year, we partner with this separate program, which dedicates memorial angel statues to cemeteries around the country. Five statues were placed in 2013, for a total of 125 since 1994. Every year on December 6, a service is held at each location for families who have lost a child.
