Die besten drei Dinge die ich im Rocktober auf Konzerten gesehen habe (in unbestimmter Reihenfolge):

- Mincer Ray’s guitarist shredding with a bloody finger after cutting himself while making show flyers before the gig.

- Mincer Ray Gitarrist spielt mit blutigem Finger, nachdem er sich beim Flyer Machen vor dem Gig geschnitten hatte.

- One of Mary Ocher’s Drummers (she’s got two now) secretly peeing into a cup onstage during a solo song that did not require drumming.

- Einer von Mary Ocher’s Schlagzeugern (sie hat jetzt zwei) pinkelt heimlich auf der Bühne in einen Becher während eines Solo-Stücks ohne Drums.

- Gelbart playing his home made synth which was controlled by a giant glowing egg with an eye in the center.

- Gelbart mit seinen selbstgebauten Synth, der von einem gigantischen glühenden Ei mit einem Auge in der Mitte kontrolliert wurde.

Needless to say, this poopy weather ain’t got shit on the berlin music scene.

Nicht nötig zu erwähnen, dass dieses Kackwetter der Berliner Musikszenen nichts anhaben kann.

And November is also looking juicy: There are once again too many shows in the calendar to have art this month, there are rad Chop Chip shows (I love Nap Eyes!!!), and it’s Billy Idol’s birthday. Ain’t that something?

Und der November sieht auch ziemlich saftig aus: Schon wieder zu viele Konzerte im Kalender für ein Kunstwerk, es gibt heftige Chop Chip Shows (ich liebe Nap Eyes!!!) und Billy Idol’s Geburtstag steht auch an. Wenn das mal nichts ist?

Foto von Sara Perovic Ich dachte fast, ich hätte Glück, denn es ist Deadline-Time, ich habe Fieber (mild bloß, no worries!), und ich schreibe über die fiebertraumfreundlichen Soft Grid, das neue und (um das vorwegzunehmen) geile Projekt um Theresa Stroetges, die bislang vor allem als ungreifbare, weirdfolky-experimentelle GeisterParty Golden Diskó Ship die Clubs unterlief. Sie gestaltet es gemeinsam mit ihrer Partnerin in crime bei den Impro-Irren Epiphany NOW, Jana Sotzko, die (z.B. mit The Dropout Patrol) eh schon so gegensätzliche Pole wie melancholischen Postrock und screamo-influenced Post-Hardcore bespielt, dass diese Soundwelten hier halt auch noch dazu passen, und dem britischen Produzenten Sam Slater, der verstörende Sound-ArtUmgebungen aus Abstraktem und Konkretem und Schönem zusammenbaut und mehr oder weniger im vergangenen Jahr direkt vom Floor als Schlagzeuger zu den beiden stieß, die so „viel lauter geworden“ sind „als ein experimentelles FrickelDuo, das eine Spur nach der anderen aufnimmt“, wie er es im Interview formuliert. Eine erste EP, „Stingrays“, entstand 2014 tatsächlich als Duo in einem leerstehenden Kinderkrankenhaus in Potsdam, mit Sam kam eine andere Dynamik hinzu, die sich immer organisch weiterentwickelt. Theresa sagt: „Es ist alles im Fluss.“

Feinster Stoff also für wirre Assoziationsketten! Aber – nada, nichts, da hilft auch kein Fiebertraum, „I did not transcend / I felt like a walking piece of shit / in a stupid looking jacket“, beschrieb diesen Zustand Car Seat Headrests Will Toledo im Sommer, bloß, dass der später substanzbegründet immerhin Jesus zu Gesicht kriegt und ich nur die Zimmerdecke mit komischen Mustern. Also: Transzendenz beiseite, The Chop! Es folgt:

Kurze Einführung in die Neuropsychologie der visuellen Halluzinationen gefolgt von / vermengt mit

Zur Phänomenologie und Genese der Gruppe Soft Grid – aber bis dahin Geduld, bis ich meine Kreise und Strukturen verstehe, die sich mir bei bei Soft Grid eher auf die Netzhaut imaginieren als die Bildsprache der psychedelischen Siebziger und auch eher als die geistigen Highwayfahrten, die die Kolleg*innen von Spex und taz unternahmen, als sie das erste Album der Gruppe hörten, „Corolla“. Das ist ja auch nützliches Alltagswissen. So erschreckend oder beglückend die halluzinierten Erlebnisse sind, lerne ich bei der Apotheken-Rundschau, so banal-mechanisch stellen sie sich neurowissenschaftlich dar: Als Sinnesreize, die als Störsignale von innen kommen statt von außen über die Sinnesorgane.

Die bahnbrechenden Experimente mit visuellen Halluzinationen fanden in den 1920er Jahren statt. Etwa durch Otfried Foerster, der beforschte, welche Hirnareale gereizt werden müssen, um einfach-abstrakte oder gegenständlich-komplexe Halluzinationen zu erzeugen. „Foerster ließ sich bei faradischer Reizung der Area 17“ – das ist nach der Einteilung der Großhirnrinde nach Korbinian Brodmann das Sehzentrum – „Photopsien in Form von Kreisen, Strichen und Punkten, bei Reizung der Area 19 komplexe Halluzinationen […] schildern.“ Stimulierung in Area 18, wie 19 ein nachgeordneter Teil der Sehrinde, löste 1929 „leuchtende Kugeln, Sterne, Flammen“ aus. Kölmel, „Visuelle Halluzinationen im hemianopen Feld bei homonymer Hemianopsie“, Berlin u.a. 1984, S. 19f) Wie gerne wüsste ich nun, wie Soft Grid mein Sehzentrum in Area 17 stimulieren! Und wie sie gedenken, demnächst meine tertiäre Sehrinde zu betupfeln, damit Werner Herzog himself vor mir steht und nicht bloß sein Diskurs-Schatten! Aber das habe ich natürlich wieder nicht gefragt, beim Interview mit Sam und Theresa im Südblock kurz vor ihrer Tour, sondern wieder vor allem bloß was über Musik. – continued page 4

– continued from page 3 Ihr spielt ja nun alle in den verschiedensten Projekten – kommt ihr da manchmal durcheinander? Woher wisst ihr, welche Idee zu welcher Geschichte passt? Theresa: Bei Soft Grid und Golden Diskó Ship gibt es Dinge, die ich tatsächlich für beides benutzen könnte, wo ich mir überlegen muss: Wem gebe ich das jetzt. Aber Golden Disko Ship ist mein kleiner EgoKokon, wo ich alleine durch meine Welt floate, und Soft Grid lebt von den Ideen von uns drei. Wenn ich eine Idee an Soft Grid gebe, weiß ich genau, dass sie noch dreimal durch den Fleischwolf gedreht wird, was total geil ist. Bei Disko Ship habe ich die Kontrolle. Das klingt so, als habt ihr einen langen Entscheidungsfindungsprozess! Sam: Ein riesiger Balanceact, sehr diplomatisch – und trotzdem voller Streitigkeiten. Für mich ist das aber sehr wichtig. Ich kenne Bands, wo man nie streitet, für mich heißt das, dass es denen nichts bedeutet. Wir haben eine Regel: Sachen nicht auszuschließen, weil sie zu irre sind. Theresa: Nicht bevor wir sie ausprobiert haben jedenfalls. Wir wollen das vermeiden, ganze Genres auszuschließen, nur weil es zu cheesy sein könnte oder weil da eben kein Saxophon-Sample hinpasst – wir sind eher: Erstmal alles ja,

warum nicht. Erst das SaxophonSample, dann der 90s-Math-RockTeil, dann der 70s-Synth-Breakdown. Niemand darf vorher sagen, bevor wir das ein paarmal ausprobiert haben, dass man etwas aufgrund des Genres ablehnt. Und das finde ich supergeil, denn dadurch kommen wir echt an Sachen, die uns überraschen und unseren Horizont erweitern. Wir haben noch nie einen Song weggeschmissen. Sam: Ganz am Schluss des Albums, the very last idea … Well, it’s a 70sSynth-Solo mit einer Rage-AgainstThe-Machine-Bassline zu KanyeWest-Texten, die durch einen Vocoder geschrien werden. Auf dem Papier ist das eine sehr schlechte Idee – ich liebe es! Wären wir nur ein bisschen mehr vorurteilsbeladen, gäbe es das nicht. Kanye West, RATM, Werner Herzog, ihr zitiert und paraphrasiert und mixt – ist das einfach experimenteller Diskurs-Pop? Theresa: Wenn wir drei unsere Einflüsse zusammenwerfen, kommt sowas dabei raus. Jana und ich hören Kanye West, ich gucke die neue Werner-Herzog-Doku, bin davon schockiert und schreibe neue Lyrics, Sam hat am Wochenende einen krassen neuen Abstrakt-Elektronik-Typen entdeckt – und dann haben wir wieder Probe.

Und wie klingt ihr denn nun? Sam: Meistens wie Sonic Youth und die Dirty Projectors – ach, nee, schreib das besser nicht. Theresa: Das ist genau das Ding - immer, wenn man versucht, es zu erklären, man denkt sofort: Nee, doch nicht! Müde Versuche nun meinerseits: Poststrukturale ChoralPsychedelik! Kraut und Noise! Tempo und Tralala-Choir! Spuk und Presslufthammer! Den Boden unter den Füßen wegziehen, schweben und fallen und dann Aufschlag! Es ist, als würde sich die Malen-nachZahlen-Dramatik von Postrock mit dem unvorhersehbaren Bunten der Psychedelik und experimentellem elektronischem Folk verschwören, so dass etwas entsteht, was zugleich sehr frei und sehr exakt klingt, unberechenbar und so erzählt, doch, dass es unmittelbar hineinzieht. Und das, wenn das letzte süße Störfeuer verklingt, vielleicht doch kurz Area 19 stimuliert. Aber bitte nicht so creepy, Hirn, ja!? – Soft Grid Album Release Show am 28. Q&A JJ Weihl hat 2010 mit Jonathan Jarzyna die Band Fenster gegründet und wenn sie nicht damit beschäftigt ist, ihr viertes Album zu produzieren, hat sie einige Projekte am laufen. Wir treffen uns am Mittag und als ich das Mikro meines Aufnahmegeräts teste, erzählt sie mir, wie ihre tägliche Mischung aus frischem, gemahlenem Kaffee mit Butter & Kokosöl die Zauberformel fürs Gehirn ist. Frühstückstipp, check! Was ist Spacebar? Das ist eine neue monatliche Sendung, immer samstags um 18 Uhr auf Byte FM. Als ich Studentin war, habe ich praktisch beim WRMC Radio gewohnt und bin dann später Music Director geworden. Für Spacebar suche ich jeden Monat ein Thema aus: der Mond, Food Porn, Träume… Ich versuche täglich neue Musik zu entdecken und es macht immer viel Spaß, zu den ausgewählten Themen die passende Tracklist zu finden. Und Videokills? Es ist einer Art Videokunst Kollektiv, dass erst in Gallerien angefangen hat. Dann haben wir ein Festival im Stattbad Wedding veranstaltet. Danach bin ich wieder nach New York gezogen und als

November 12th – Ausland “Positive Energy Has A Name”, this is probably the most fitting description of what GaBLé is, so thank you twice Pop Im Ausland. Unlike some drugs which tend to get boring, GaBLé just gets better and better. Their powerful anti-folk-diisco-pffunk-chaootic-blues can create a wonderful addiction. Not to mention the opening act, Nicholas Desamory, a duo composed of Berlinbased composer Nicholas Bussmann and his partner the artist Lucile Desamory. A very exciting night indeed.

November 17th – Monarch Nap Eyes are the kind of band who make you ask questions like: Does my dog love me as much as I love my dog? They don’t sing about dogs but their sad, slow, canadian rock will take you places. Places you promised yourself, you’d never go again... Too many good shows this month, we also higly recommend you go see Kate Tempest, The Fall, The Sonics, Allie* and Heimer*, Alex Cameron, Kevin Morby, Gurr*, Rattle, Preoccupations, Soft Grid*, Sleaford Mods, Die Heiterkeit, Las Kellies, Zombie Zombie and so much more (see calendar page 6).

ich zurück nach Berlin kam, waren Tiphaine (De Fleurette Brown) und Emma (Pike), die das Kollektiv mit mir leiten, nicht mehr hier. Da habe ich die Performance-Reihe Invisible City Symphonies initiiert. Da findet eine Mischung aus Contemporary Silent Cinema mit Live Music Scores statt. Die letzte Ausgabe war einer Art Travelling Exhibition in London. Da konnte das Publikum in 5 verschieden Orten Performances und Installationen erleben. Ich war besonders froh, dass so viele Musiker, die ich oft mit Fenster auf Tour getroffen habe, mitgemacht haben, wie zum Beispiel Joe Carvell von Batsch oder Will Samson, der während unseres Filmprojekts Emocean Mitglieder der Band war. Apropos Batsch, die haben beim zweiten Fresh Panties gespielt, richtig? Ja, richtig! Als wir in Coventry gespielt haben, waren wir wirklich erstaunt von denen. Fresh Panties #1 wurde aber erst geplant, weil wir schon beim Touren Berlin vermissten und im ehemaligen Antje Öklesund unseren ComingHome-Gig spielen wollten. Dann haben wir die Release Show von Ωracles gemacht, weil wir auch ein Music Video

für die gedreht haben. Eigentlich wurden alle diese Konzerte ziemlich spontan geplant, deswegen ist es jetzt gar nicht so regelmäßig – und dazu weil’s Antje Öklesund leider nicht mehr gibt. Dort und an vielen weiteren Orten haben wir viele Kenntnisse gesammelt, vom Promoter Biz über Bands bis zum Cateringstaff usw. Für uns war es eine Gelegenheit diese ganze Energie zurück zu geben. Und wie viel Energie hat Fenster noch? Ganz viel! Jetzt versuchen wir - wie immer - was ganz anderes zu machen, bzw. nur zu viert die Produktion des Albums zu schaffen... Luckily, in the last years, there’s been a bit of a (mostly) free and non-for-profit „advice office explosion“ in Berlin catering to artists and musicians. Tennis (und Quality Time)

Nach einem Gespräch mit Urs, Sally und Max. Von Sören Bill Wer über dieses „Tennis“ schreiben will, kommt wohl um eine catchige Sportmetapher nicht herum. Doch eigentlich denke ich bei Tennis hauptsächlich an die komischen Geräusche, die die Praktizierenden ausstoßen. Und an olle von Lotzow’s Reflexionen zu jener Ballsportart Mitte der 90er. Passt vielleicht sogar beides ganz gut. Das Tennis befindet sich in der Reuterstraße 95 in Neukölln. „Kaffee & Bier“ verspricht dort seit März dieses Jahres ein Aufsteller vor der Tür, aber da geht noch viel mehr. Drinnen ist es gemütlich (draußen war es das im Sommer auch), viele Leute kennen sich, aber auch wer niemanden kennt, fühlt sich schnell als Teil dieses freundlichen Grüppchens. Niemand wirkt sonderlich beschäftigt und ich frage mich, ob hier überhaupt irgendwer „arbeitet“ oder die Zapfanlage immer zufällig jemanden der Anwesenden dazu verleitet, mir ein Bier zu kredenzen. Dazu läuft schrammelige Gitarrenmusik (bestimmt auch mal ne Toco-Scheibe), Vinyl ist hier angesagt, man darf auch gern selbst Platten mitbringen. „Leute sollen hier

abhängen wollen“, wird mir der Anspruch an die Atmosphäre des Ladens erklärt. Ein paar Kaffees/Biere/Drinks sollten dank der fairen Preise schon drin sein und wer mal wieder sehr knapp ist, bekommt auch Sterni (die Mischung ist toll: Direct-Source-Kaffee und Onkel‘s selbstgebrannter Schnaps neben Sterni, 1312-Pils und Pfeffi). Vegane (und vegetarische) Hotdogs, Kuchen und regelmäßige Küfa gibt es auch. Geraucht wird übrigens im Keller. Den Tocotronic-Bezug hab ich schon eingebaut, nun zu den komischen Geräuschen: Mit dem Aufkommen der Bar/ Café-Idee Ende des letzten Jahres wurde auch der Verein Quality Time gegründet (bzw. „aus dem Chaos geboren“), dessen Ziel es ist, die Räumlichkeiten auch kulturell anzureichern (bzw. „so viel Gutes wie möglich unterzubringen“). Besonders der schöne Keller bietet sich für diverse Zwecke an und sollte vor allem für Konz erte genutzt werden, was zurzeit leider die Lärmtoleranz einer Nachbarin übersteigt (hoffentlich ist es in Zukunft irgendwann wieder möglich). So werden aus verschiedensten anderen, nicht so krachigen Interessen-

-bereichen (Kunst, Film, Musik, Literatur, Tattoos, Druck, Design…) im Café und im Keller unkommerzielle Veranstaltungen und Partys durchgeführt und Arbeiten präsentiert, aktuell zum Beispiel eine Unisex-Modekollektion (Team Soft). Einmal im Monat gibt es zudem einen veganen Soli-Brunch gegen Spende für wechselnde Hilfsorganisationen (nächste Runde am 6. November). Und neue Ideen und Meinungen sind gern gesehen. Mein Feedback: Was im Tennis passiert, hat den Stempel „Quality Time“ verdient.

Cooking with HELEN FRY by Amande Dagod

Rice : fry onion and garlic in a pan until golden, add salt and pepper, add rice and stir until see-through. Add water, bring to a boil, cover and cook until the water is absorbed. Add sweet corn (washed it if in a can).

FRYED BURRITO I went over to Helen Fry’s kitchen and she made beautiful burritos. “I’ve never made that before, maybe you should write that down too.” A good choice for these chilly times. She told me you need to eat spicy dishes to warm up. “I also made chilli tea once because I thought it’s good when you’re sick and it worked but it was super disgusting.”Here’s the recipe of “Burritos-for-the-first-time à la Helen Fry”, sorted out by layers as there is no order for the preparation, just follow the layers. When all layers are spread on the tortilla , roll them gently (don’t put too much filling otherwise it will break) and fry them in a hot pan until crunchy. Bon appetit ! Top of The Chop 5 shops at the Gesundbrunnen Center

by Joe Kelly Imagine the internet without Google. That’s pretty much the Gesundbrunnen Center. Don’t stress though because this list is here to show you that going to a shopping centre isn’t just about looking for stuff you need that isn’t actually there, it can also mean a nice afternoon activity enjoyed both alone and with friends. A bit like a trip to the museum but with less old stuff and more shiny new stuff and brighter lights. Here’s my top five shops at the Gesundbrunnen Center. 1 Saturn - These days I like to stay stocked up on little adapters. You might not miss them when they’re not there but pulling out a headphone splitter on a long car journey for some movie time is an exceptional feeling (and also means you get to watch a movie without being rude). As well as a decent selection of audio adapters they also have a surround sound room with a comfy sofa if you need some chill time (museums take note). Personally I prefer to stay away from the more mainstream parts of the shop like the phone and digital camera sections because they are too crowded, but the other day I was in there and one of the staff was just chilling out by the coffee machines handing out free espressos. Top score 5 stars 2 Real - I’m a big fan of condiments and Real has it going on in this department. Hp brown sauce, mango chutney, a large variety of hot sauces oh and also corn tortillas and cheap socks. They even have a sports section. Real is not so good for just looking around (it’s a bit ugly) but it is awesome for buying stuff you don’t really need. On the down side, the sheer amount of options can be overwhelming and you can get a bit lost here. They also sell adapters though and it’s right next to Saturn so you can price check. 4 stars 3 Runners Point - I’ve never bought anything here but It’s brightly lit and there’s lots of vibrantly coloured shoes and sometimes I like to just pop in for a little look around. It’s a bit like visiting an aquarium. 3 stars

4 Studio Line Photography - I’ve never had a professional portrait done and I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t enjoy the experience. One thing I’m definitely sure of is that I wouldn’t want that experience to be in full public view in a busy shopping centre. The way I see it, anyone that goes in for that is fair game and it’s totally ok for me and my daughter to get an ice cream from the shop next door and sit on the bench and indulge in the ultimate form of people watching. 2 stars because it’s a bit weird. 5 Nanu Nana - I’ve also never bought anything in here but it’s full of shit you don’t need but your mum might like. Also if I can’t find my wife and daughter they are probably in here buying a present for a distant relative or a candle. Extra points for being a rendezvous point but essentially a shop full of shit so 2 stars. Ps: If you’re the type that likes to ‘try before you buy’ then you’ll be glad to know the Gesundbrunnen Centre website has helpfully included a virtual tour so you can now enjoy the whole experience from the comfort of your own bed.
