E D I T O R IA L Hello there my sweet, sun-drenched devils. I hope this copy of The Chop finds you in good spirits. Perhaps you spent the day at the lake before heading down to see some of that rock ‘n’ roll music. Perhaps you kept the blinds closed and spent the whole day watching Netflix. Either way, no need to feel guilty. ‘Tis the season of hedonism in which ever form you choose. Just remember that when the sun sets on ol’ Berlin, there is tons of live music to be had. Even before the the sun goes down there’s plenty of festival action happening. For more information on that... please see the rest of this magazine.

The Chop ist ein kostenloses Community-Magazin mit monatlichem Konzertkalender, das sich um die Berliner Alternativ-Live-Musikszene dreht.

That’s all I got for this month. Keep cool and drink a beer/radler/milkshake/water/fass brause (holy shit that drink is good).

LeVent are tearing into summer with their first full length record. Interview by Maya-Roisin Slater. Photo by Joe Dilworth

It’s an unusually warm spring day and I am sitting with, Maryna Russo, Heike Rädeker, and Frank Neumeier the latter bassists and former drummer that make up Berlin post-punk trio LeVent. We’re sitting in the beer garden next to their jam space, affectionately described as more of a dungeon, on the border between Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain. In just a few hours this fenced in drinking ground will be full of wobbly British teenagers and American backpackers thirsty for a cultural experience. But right now, at 2pm on a Wednesday, it is desolate. Hunched over styrofoam cups of coffee purchased from a food truck that normally deals in the business of pasty boiled German dumplings called Knodels, we go over LeVent’s origin story and how it lead them to their first full length record, a self titled number to be released on A Recordings June 1st. They began as a group like any other, three acquaintances jamming in a dungeon-esque rehearsal space. In its early stages the band consisted of Russo and Rädeker on bass, and a fellow named Dennis LeVent on guitar. The three paddled through a river of drummers, struggling to find one who fit. They eventually realized the man they’d been looking for was right in front of them all along and soon Neumeier, a friend of Rädeker, was climbing down the dingy jamspace stairs sticks in hand. The last chapter in the story of how LeVent came to be is perhaps most puzzling of all, Dennis the guitar player after whom the band got their name took a hike. Rädeker, who also sings vocals, took his place shifting the guitar parts to her six string bass. But the title stuck. “[Dennis] was a bit confused at first he didn’t know what to do, he kept getting emails about guestlist because his facebook name is LeVent. After a while people didn’t believe that it was named after him,” Russo explains. It seems like everything this band does comes accompanied by a certain air of rock and roll casualty. Names don’t need to get changed. They played their first EP release show without having actually finished the EP. Their debut album got made because Brian Jonestown Massacre frontman and A Recordings Ltd. founder Anton Newcombe came up after a show and asked to record them, six months later they showed up at his studio with all their equipment after a festival gig and made sure it was going to happen.

Despite these casual airs LeVent’s sound is far from slacker rock. The two basses provide more than enough heaviness to push them into the postpunk realm, songs off the self-titled album are dark and foreboding. Surprisingly this line-up doesn’t create an undefinable wall of sound, with frequent lengthy instrumental breaks LeVent offer decisive melodies and leave you in just the right mood to disparage whichever unfortunate guitar that should cross your path next. “In a way I feel like it’s not actually limiting it’s challenging,” says Rädeker of the double basses. “Because you have to be more eclectic about what you do, like leave space for one another. And think of structures and layers instead of just jangling off on the guitar, which I find pretty nice because we avoid quite a lot of boring cliches by doing that.” When asked how they would describe the new record to listeners with LeVent virgin ears, the band says in eager agreement “It sounds like driving a car into a barn full of goats.” Which I interpret as their experimental tendency to swerve away from what you would expect of a three piece rock band into unknown territories where the roads are unpaved and dark, and whatever accident you should stumble into will doubtlessly end in some curious noise.

After a long time spent playing almost every month in Berlin, this trio is ready to take their cupboard rattling jams to new shores. Once the album is released they’re hoping a tour will soon follow suit. Unlike many bands who loath the putrid van odors and spongy street meats that line the path from city to city, Russo, Rädeker, and Neumeier seem optimistic about some time on the road. It makes perfect sense that after a long cold winter cooped up in their practice cell sitting on a full record they would find themselves in a sharing mood. As our pasty winter shoulders readjust to the feeling of UV rays, and the cups of Knodle-man coffee run dry the world takes on an air of absolute tranquility. As if it’s taking a silent retreat to prepare for the beginning of June, when the sound of LeVent drifting from windows left slightly ajar will draw people into the street to stomp with a joyful fury through the fields of daisies, and drown out pastoral soundtracks of birds chirping with blistering bass and lyrical self reflection. – https://levent.bandcamp.com 3

Memphis, Tennessee. Home of Elvis, professional wrestler Jerry Lawler, and punky-noisy-psyche band NOTS. Come see them tear it up at Urban Spree just meters away from tourists on bean bag chairs talking about how “real” Berlin is.

Berlin-based italian composer Andrea Belfi is having his new album out on label Float — release show is on the 9th at the Funkhaus, as opening act for Terry Riley & Gyan Riley. He will also perform solo on the 16th for Blind Signal #2 as Hobocombo playing Moondog with Trimba & Electronics. Also on the bill are Kathy Alberici & Federico Nitti. Do consider bringing your Chop Chip for this event to get a Cheap-List price !

Fête Fest is a big thing! The guy who opened that lovely new Internet Explorer celebrates the two year anniversary of Fête D’Adieu on June 23rd. The line-up sounds appropriate: the weird but amazing International Music from Essen, local noise pop couple Molde, the freshest Indie Rock from Hamburg by the name of Lafote, and Kartenhauskörper from Vienna including their irresistible magic! And What Difference Does It Make will get the after party nice and sweaty!

June 11th – Kino Babylon

At SXSW festival The Chop spent a lot of time hanging out with Magic Island and Oum Shatt. Turns out their personalities are equally as nice as their tunes. While we implore you to check out all of the Torstrassen festival, we especially recommend coming to see them and Perera Elsewhere play on Super Sunday. What to expect: freaky-pop dancing, pencil-line mustaches, hungover TSF people, comfy seats.

“Give it Up for Down By the River” by JJ Weihl

Down by the River festival is not down by any river. Once upon a time it was, but now it is in fact housed in the dark vortex of a techno club with a rather magical garden. I played there once with my band Fenster on a wooden stage reminiscent of a pirate ship built by a child. The following year, we were asked to host the festival. We of course agreed because we say yes to pretty much anything that sounds like a bad idea if our friends are proposing it. In the past the festival has been hosted by comedians, crowd-pumpers, B list Berlin celebrities. We are of course none of those things. But we thought, what the heck, #yolo. It was the hottest day of the year. Tasked with “hosting” a festival for the first time, we arrived in matching tie-die, armed with water guns, pockets full of candy, and no real plan. In some kind of haphazard state of heat induced euphoria, we pranced around from stage to stage, shyly bidding audience members to gather closer for the next band. We prepared no jokes, requested no one to “put their hands together,” and certainly did not use the phrase “give it up.” We did however shoot children with water guns to their delight, and distributed inordinate amounts of sugar to the wilted public. We cleaned sticky ice cream off the feet of babies, we gave 6

high-fives to strangers who seemed confused by who we were and what we were doing there, but mostly we were able to enjoy the bands. During any festival, there are always hiccups, delays, unforeseen dalliances. During one of these moments, we gathered our friends from the band the Burning Hell and entertained a crowd in wait with an A cappella tribute to some of our friends hosting the festival, Heiko and Sibsi. That’s about as entertaining as we managed to get. The following year we deejayed at the festival. This required no talking whatsoever, something we’re rather good at. Down By the River Festival may not actually be by any body of water, but it is the kind of festival that sticks out of the generic, branded, tourist traps that litter the quiet corners of Berlin’s greenery in the summer months. It is a festival of playful integrity, hosted by local promoter heroes of the Berlin music scene that keep things relevant: Fourtrack on Stage, amSTART, and Mohair Sam. The line-up is always a colourful mix of stellar local acts and eclectic international delights. There are little surprises nestled into the fabric of the festival. One might find a magician doing card tricks in an

old trailer parked in the garden for example, and that same magician might later turn into a musician and play a set. It is the kind of festival where you run into all of your friends, and feel like you could stay forever. Maybe you’ll find a little bed under a willow tree and take a nap in the shade between sets. Maybe you’ll discover your new favorite band. After playing, hosting, and deejaying, there is only one role left to occupy: spectator. This year I’m very much looking forward to seeing Tendre Biche, our very own local Berlin slacker pop charmers, and Stella Chiweshe, a Zimbabwean musician who plays the mbira dzavadzimu, a traditional instrument that will probably make you sing and flap your wings like a bird before you even realize whats happening. The rest is all about the element of surprise. So...see you there?! – Down By The River Festival is happening on June 24th from 2pm at About Blank. – www.downbytheriver-berlin.de

Q&A Can you introduce yourself and tell us about the various projects you’re involved with (Music Pool, M:Soundtrack, TSF, etc)? Hello Chopland! My name is Melissa Perales and I live in Berlin circa 21 years so I guess I am more Berliner now than Chicagoan. I have involved myself from the get go in the cultural scene of Berlin. First with Film, where I started an Underground and independent film festival called Circles of Confusion. I went on to join the Schokoladen Collective in 1998 which really cemented my bug about putting on shows as you can imagine -- there i could create along side the other members my own sort of utopia -- It was not until 2004 that I would officially call myself a promoter when I started M:Soundtrack a live music series set up with international and local acts that complemented each other like a good soundtrack. I began working with a2n (all2gethernow eV), then Torstraßen, then Music Pool Berlin, and now We Make Waves (European women in Music eV)! They all seem like logical steps and I am happy if people reach out about any of the projects. We need to help and encourage each other as often as possible and I would like to think that is what I am trying to do with most of these projects.

Q&A with Melissa Perales of Torstraßen Festival By Ryan Rosell Tell us about the Torstraßen Festival.

history

What can we look forward to this year at TSF?

Well it started in 2011, at that time my colleague at a2n Andreas Gebhard, an idea guy (Newthinking, re:publica) asked me and Andrea Goetzke (a2n, Music Pool Berlin, Abelton Loop Summit) if we would like to start a festival like one he had just attended in London. We were both pretty into it and as all crazy ideas start, we put the whole festival together in 2 months. At that time our colleague Norman Palm (Fertig Design, Never Work) was designing the posters and flyers for us, giving his two cents here and there and of course music tips, he even played with two of his projects in the first years as an artist. Now in our seventh year we are four curators, adding Kevin Halpin of Shameless/Limitless last year officially to the team! We divide up the rest of jobs and add some other good solid folks like Nadine Schildhauer (Missy, Spex) doing our PR, Till Kreische (Antje Okelsund, Acud) with Tech management and Nadine Hefler (Finsterbusch, Nadine & the Prussians) who steps off the stage for a minute to learn from behind the scenes about the festival world. Ladies and Gentlemen with a good team everything is possible.

Well a lot of fucking good music of course! But seriously we have added a few days this year, on the 8th of June we have a special night where we invited the Cairo based electronic music collective Kairo is Koming to the Roter Salon. All really interesting artists who have had a lot to do with the underground club music scene in Cairo, we will also have a talk with them that evening. And this year we also added a small Label market, something we have been deliberating for the last years but did not really have the capacity to put together. I believe be a great addition to the fest and give us a chance and the artists to connect on yet again another level. What band are you most excited to see? I will try and see as much as possible but in the end I am mostly hustling around the venues. I am responsible for making sure things are running smoothly, but I hope to see at least 8-10 acts. if I had more time I would at least drop in to these acts and see music that I have not seen before or put on myself, acts like Stella Chiweshe, Nahawa Doumbia, The Courtneys, Molly Burch, JFDR, Mavi Phoenix, IIgenNur, Highest Sea, Kala Brisella, Priests, Tops, Hair and Beauty, Ducktails and Flamingods. As you can see it is rather difficult, I do believe that whatever venue you happen into on Saturday you will find something to your liking and or become a fan. The variety should lead to potential high discovery points! ;) – Torstraßen Festival 2017 June 8th to 11th, Berlin Mitte – www.torstrassenfestival.de

Top of The Chop Hangover Cures

by Joe Kelly At the age of 27 I experienced something for the very last time; I went out to a pub in Brighton, drank way too much, and woke up in the morning feeling slightly dizzy and a little bit lazy; then I played football, ate a bacon sandwich, and felt great again. Up until then I thought that was what a hangover meant. Then I started to feel changes, changes that made me feel unsure of my identity. Who am I now? Is this what adult feels like? What is pizza anyway? Little did I know, I had just veered onto a one way street and there would be no u-turns. Seven years have since gone by, and now a bad hangover plays out over several stages covering about three days. I’ve said before that life is a rollercoaster, you just gotta ride it. Well, this is the bit where you’re not sure you like roller coasters actually and fuck I hope this is as fast as it goes and I wonder how often they maintain this thing and oh shit my neck... for three days. They should rename them hangneverover. First the extreme wobbly sickness which can get so bad you think maybe you’ve caught an actual sickness and maybe it’s not your fault after all, then the onset of every-five-minutesexistential-abyss, usually followed by a day and a half of crippling tiredness and bad choices. By Wednesday you’re good again and that’s usually when someone texts to see if you’re going to that gig later. I’m not saying all this because I love to moan about being old and getting worse hangovers (although I think maybe I do). I’m saying it because I feel my experience in the upside-down dimension of the post party struggle has brought me a few insights on how to cope. Having said that, I usually run out of ideas half way through these articles and then the rest is padding. Let’s see how this goes. Here’s my top 5 hangover cures. 1. Go to a lake, eat an ice cream, swim and chill with good friends Now this one might be bit of a tall ask. It’s definitely less fun in winter and you need some free time and some good friends to make it happen. I put it at the top spot because it happened to me recently and was definitely the best hangover cure I could ask for. It was during this recent recovery time that I remarked “This is the best cure for a hangover,” swiftly followed by “Hey that can be the next Chop top five article.” So as usual with these top five things, there’s one thing I want to write about (done) and the rest will probably be mostly silly and useless, but hopefully at least mildly amusing. 5 stars for lakes and friends for now anyway. 2. Pizza? Actually I want to write about this too. The first thing that’s going to go through your mind when you wake up with a hangover is “Oh god please let there be water in my mouth.” The second thing will most likely be a wave of guilty thoughts or shameful memories. Like when you said something probably completely normal that now, in retrospect, may well have been the dumbest/lamest/most insulting thing you’ve ever said/done (side note here: if everyone else was drunk you’re fine. If you were the only one drunk, leave it for now and come back to this bit in the shower later). Stage three is thoughts of food. At this point Deliveroo is like an oasis in the desert that is your dry skin and mouth. There are so many things, all of them awesome, and your financial problems are a thing of the past/future. Pizza though, is the top dog in my opinion.

Pizza will never let you down, just order from somewhere at least half decent and you’re a winner. It’s like a best friend, but only there when you need it and covered in cheese and toppings. 5 stars for pizza. 3. Fruit, Vegetables and a Shower I lump these three together because they’re boring. Fruit and veg are probably the only things on this list that will actually genuinely help your body recover. Unfortunately though, you’re looking for instant gratification and indulgence here, not actual good choices. Save those things for day two and three when the sadness kicks in. By that point you’ve decided that from now on you’re going to be a more wholesome person and make better lifestyle choices. For now, as a compromise I say just put them on a pizza. Follow up with regret and a little cry in the shower so you can’t see the tears and it’s almost time to go back to sleep. 4 stars for pizza being involved again. 4. Tea See last month’s article 5. Stop drinking so much, make better lifestyle choices and try to be a a more wholesome person. LOL Disclaimer: YOLO
