E D I TOR IA L Do you like reading The Chop and live music? Chop’s got your back dawg. We’ve teamed up with Puschen, M:Soundtrack, Shameless/Limitless, Paper and Iron Booking Co., Fourtrack on Stage, Fête D’Adieu, Cranky Booking, Future Sailor Concerts and other gangstas in the music scene to bring you Chop Chips. Here’s how they work:

Du liest gern The Chop und magst Livemusik? Wir sind für dich da! Wir haben uns mit Puschen, M:Soundtrack, Shameless/Limitless, Paper and Iron Booking Co., Fourtrack on Stage, Fête D’Adieu, Cranky Booking, Future Sailor Concerts und anderen Gangstern der Musikszene zusammengeschlossen um euch Chop Chips zu bringen. Folgendermaßen funktionieren sie:

These fashionable keychains are valid for a year and can be purchased for 25 bones. That skrilla goes directly towards the printing costs of The Chop. Every ten chips we sell means we can print another issue. Flash one of these puppies at select shows that our homies are putting on (check out this months calendar) and you’ll receive discounted entry to the show. Plus, FREE ENTRY to all Chop parties; parties like our Halloween Cover Band Party this month or our Karaoke party in November. You get cheaper entry, our pals’ shows get promoted, and we keep printing without having to sell out. It’s like giving capitalism a swift little kick in the dick.

HUSH MOSS by Yannis Trouinard

As expected, this September 20th was a memorable evening at ACUD. M:Soundtrack was putting on the second Berlin gig of Smoota, an extremely talented (and erotic) entertainer who knows how to smooth talk and sing about the ladies - but not only the feminine part of the audience appreciated his chats in-between songs. Indeed, after his gig the stage was warm enough for the 8 members of Hush Moss to give their best: the kind of show where you want to follow what the pheromones are telling you and find yourself a funky dance partner … but before they put their sensual groove on stage, I sat down with the band’s sexy frontman Eden and video director/bass player Daklis (also sexy) to talk about a few things. How did the band start? E: I was in a band called Peach Peach which broke up and a friend of mine who runs a studio had already booked the time for us. When the band broke up, we said, “Let’s still do something” so I wrote some songs and did the album. These guys [points to squad who are setting up gear] played on it and slowly, slowly, slowly we built up to what we are here today. How many band members are you and how many of them living in Berlin?

“ The main goal is to play with everyone and try every club, try every booker. ” Which club would you like to play in ?

E: Three of them are Living in Israel with the producers, and the other four are in Berlin.

E: Mercedes-Benz Arena. D: It looks like a nice PA ... [laughs] E: Actually, I would really like to play Yaam.

Hmmm I didn’t remember you being 8 people last time I saw you.

What does Hush Moss mean?

E: No, because it changes all the time. Sometimes the guys are somewhere else. Everybody knows there parts so we can adapt to our situation. How did you release this first album? E: We were supposed to release the album ourselves so we made some CD’s. After we released the first single [“It Takes A Lot”] a label from Paris [Kitsuné] picked it up and released it. Then, Average Negative started working with us and officially released the album. Do you think you belong to some kind of scene, here in Berlin? E: Theres a lot of bands I like to see play: Häxxan which is a punk band from Israel and Parcels. D: We’ve been playing with really cool bands. We had a really nice night with Malibu in Loophole who are doing really cool disco. E: Yeah and Oxwood Heads. I feel like the bands we connect to don’t have a specific scene. The main goal is to play with everyone and try every club, try every booker.

I: Nothing E: I keep telling people its my last name. You guys have played 3 times in the last month, it seems like it has been an intense year for you guys. What are the future plans for the band ? E: We want to do a lot of festivals and touring and work on a new album. We would like to get things going enough so that we can live right, because right now we’re not making any money. We had a great release party last week at Schrippe Hawaii A lot of people bought the cassette and it didn’t feel like we were trying to push it down their throats. People came, said hi, had fun, and danced. Can you tell us a bit about your music videos ? D: Until now, I’ve made the music videos. We’ve made three but one was a bit problematic so we put it aside for now. E: We just wanted something a bit more fun and funky and happy to show the world.

D: Now we’re working on the next video for “Take Me By The Hand”. I was recently in Iceland and I collected some material. It’s going to be interesting. E: [chuckles ominously] It seems like there is a big gap between your vibes and Iceland. D: Yeah, it will be surprisingly fitting I think. What do you do outside of music? I: I like painting. I do Graffiti. Do you have a sign that you write? I: No! [laughs] Any last words? D: I just want to say that we all really love to play concerts and we would love to play one every day so if you want us to play every day... We would love to do it! – facebook.com/hushmoss Bandcamp : averagenegative “It Takes A Lot” is now out and sold out on Average Negative 3

FEATURED SHOWS October 8th – Monarch, West Germany and Fahimi Bar

October 25th Columbia Theater

Kassetten Tag has its second outing in Berlin this year taking up residence at Monarch, West Germany and Fahimi Bar with cassette releases of various Berlin labels along with a host of live bands including Celsius Panda, Mansions and Millions Karaoke, Waelder, and Tuggy.

Anyone you might have seen walking, cycling or running with headphones and a huge smile on their face recently has been listening Angel Olsen’s recent offering: My Woman. Olsen’s voice is a show stopper, capable of hushing crowds into reverential, attentive, awestruck silence. This show should be worth it alone to experience “Sister” live, an epic song on which she somehow manages to sound like every great female singer you ever loved before the song folds back in on itself and unfurls into pop perfection like a Fleetwood Mac classic leaving goosebumps all over. The rest of the album is so good I shall not ruin it for you, go get

your hands on it. A great album, a great voice, go if you can, it’s bound to be memorable. October 29th - West Germany Hotly tipped by many (including The Notwist gentlemen) to be one of the next big things in german indieland, Friends of Gas played earlier this year at the now sadly no more Antje Oeklesund and it was an impressive performance. Their debut album will be released by the excellent Berlin label, Staatsakt, this post/punk, noise combo invite you along to celebrate with them. Not to be missed.

Oct 22 - Berghain Kantine Sun Worship head up a night of black metal shenanigans at the Kantine; screaming, hair everywhere, deafeningly good, actually think I just talked myself into it. Sun Worship rule.

Q&A

What’s Cassette Store Day Germany? Cassette Store Day started back in 2013 in UK and USA and returns this year for the second time in Australia, New Zealand, and Germany on Saturday October 8th, 2016. Labels, shops, promoters, bands, everybody can take part in the event and share their love for tapes! For Cassette Store Day Germany, German labels and bands can send us info about their tapes and we publish a release list through our website that we also send to shops all over Germany. If they are interested in some cassettes, they can contact the label / band directly. It’s like having a huge multiple release party on a local, national and international level. Kassettentag is our own event that takes place in Berlin. Why tapes ? At Späti Palace and Mansions and Millions, we release mostly tapes, so when we’ve been asked whether we would initiate Cassette Store Day in Germany, it made sense. We want to create a yearly opportunity for people to celebrate the cassette or to reconnect it.

Up Coming Chop Events (Free entry with a Chop Chip) October 7th - Its friday night and The Chop Squad is on the wheels of steel playing tunes all night long at Madame Claude. October 29th - Halloween Party at Marie Antoinette! Six great local bands will cover legends. Costumes are encouraged.

Q&A with Amande Dagod of Cassette Store Day Germany / Kassettentag and Berlin label Späti Palace. Interview by Amande Dagod We hope to show a wider a audience that cassettes are a relevant format and that there’s a flourishing scene. Unlike what most of people say or think, tapes never really went away. There is still a very strong community using this format which has a lot of good features. It’s rather cheap, the production is quick, it’s easy to carry and distribute. Tapes are important, we love them, it’s important that people know that!

With Späti Palace we are also releasing a tape for the occasion, it’s a split cassette featuring Strand Child* and Celsius Panda*, two really exciting local bands, make sure to check them out they are playing some shows this month!

What can we expect for Kassettentag#2 ?

Fahimi Bar (from 4pm) Tape market and local stands, tape listening station.

Späti Palace, Flennen and Mansions and Millions are teaming up this year again to bring you KASSETTENTAG#2, an all-day event taking place at Fahimi Bar, Monarch, and Westgermany. There will be a tape market with stands from local labels and your favorite magazine, live bands (Wælder, Tuggy, Stefkovic van Interesse, Celsius Panda*) a very special all stars karaoke where bands will perform the song they contributed to Mansions and Millions tape compilation (featuring Tendre Biche*, Helen Fry*, Better Person*, Magic Island*, Sean Nicholas Savage*, Karolini* ...)

Missed Connections Giving love a second chance. Submit your missed connections or be put in touch with the one you missed at hello@thechop.de MsF – We met at the Caudal release show in ACUD. We had a couple of drinks together at the bar, shared our thoughts about the meaning of hornets and how to make the best cucumber salad on earth. Just before you took off, I asked you where we could see each other again. To this you answered the Hush Moss gig, same place exactly a week after. But I waited for you at the bar during the whole evening and you never came… I would love to see you once more, even just once. FsF– Saw you again at your show at Loophole on september first, luckily you’re on stage all the time. While you play the keyboard you lift up one of your legs like the most gorgeous flamingo I’ve ever seen. Your aura is like a peach on fire. I wanna bottle it and pour it over my sundae. Eat it without a spoon. Lemme buy you a beer. Or ten. MsM – You’re the only member of Girlie who doesn’t wear glasses. I wish you did wear glasses, but that the glasses were my butt-cheeks. I think about you all the time. I think about you so much I can’t concentrate at work. If I loose my job, will you be my Zucker Vater?

5 Berlin Memories by Ben Green I was riding home drunk on this crappy little girls bike that I stole from my hinterhoff, and I was hammering it. I was really into cycling, 200 km a week, lycra, the whole deal, so yeah, I was going fast. I popped off the curb and the front wheel just dropped off. The forks hit the road and I went flying. I did a double forward roll and ended up on my feet, totally unharmed. This guy saw it happen and he said I should be dead. The first New Years Eve I had in Berlin ruled. Some pals threw a roof party on Karl Marx Allee. They had one of those gas heaters that restaurants use and about 90kg of fireworks. I remember looking out over the city and it looked like war, like the city was being attacked. I thought “This must’ve been what it was like in 1945!”. Pretty much the first thing I did when I got to Berlin was go to Boxhagner market. This was 2005, and it was at least 80% crust, punks, hippies, semi-homeless people. I thought it was heaven.

Ben Green plays the bass in Civil Civic and lived in Berlin in 2004 and 2005. Ask him for more souvenirs at Civil Civic show on October 28th at Urban Spree. I bought a leather jacket for five euros and ate some soup. Moving to Berlin seemed like a really good decision. Me and two guys I was working with went to a meeting at a big label about licensing this record we’d produced, Return Of Dr Octagon. One of the guys was older, and he’d been badly screwed on some record deals in the past, and half way through the meeting he went berserk, yelling at the label guys, calling them vultures and scumbags. What a disaster. In the end we self-released and the record bombed. I used to go to this reggae place on the East Side Gallery. They had volleyball and all that shit, heaps of weed. I remember sitting on this block of concrete in my short shorts, talking to some friends. People walking past kept staring. One of my friends told me later that my whole cock and balls where out of my shorts, just hanging there, but the bastards didn’t tell me. That’s the kind of friends I had.

S H OW - R O SCOPE by Lulu La Certa Illustrations by Martin Dziallas The cosmos might not always control your destiny, but when it does, The Chop has experts on hand to keep you in the celestial-know. GEMINI – If those windows painted blue with the light of the TV make you long for simple life choices, let me tell you one thing: Since they killed cable, life will never be easy again. CANCER – Every once in a while our life sounds like someone else’s song. Even if we’re part of history repeating itself, there’s always space for a little division. TAURUS – No matter how well thought out your fantasies about the future are – if you don’t step out of line once or twice, you won’t find what the world’s got in store for you. VIRGO – You didn’t wish for your bag to be stolen when you thought about a brand new set of keys, I know. It’s important to accept that not all experiences are inspiring or justified. LIBRA – You don’t need to consult self-help websites to learn how to be positively unemployed. Being outside the 9-to-5 is worth cherishing for a while. SCORPIO – Do you keep finding notes with lists of plans that you abandoned long ago? Cut that and change something about your being short on long term goals. SAGITTARIUS – Space may be infinite, but our terrestrial resources aren‘t. Your waste leads a happier life being recycled down here than littering the dark side of the moon. ARIES – While billions of people got drunk at the end of the century, Putin became president for the first time. Moral: Party hard but keep an eye on the evil of the world. CAPRICORN – You’re such a good talker. Sometimes. Like, when you’re in a really good mood. Just think of these moments next time you need your voice in an important, grown-up situation. AQUARIUS – A quick „sorry“ typed into FB Messenger doesn’t count as a proper excuse. Don’t duck, being sincere doesn’t hurt. And don’t forget the flowers. PISCES – We all felt something true during that Mercury transit in May. What, you didn’t know? Then please stop using Mercury retrograde as an excuse for everything that bothers you. LEO – We know you watch the news, we know it is a drag. But keep up the staying-in-the-know-thing and you will get past feeling crushed by everything bad that happens sooner or later.
