How fortunate we are to enjoy another round of gluttonous consumption all for the sake of a magical baby being born who most of us don’t really believe was magic but still like buying shit enough to go along with the capitalism-produced narrative and acquire commodities that we think we need but know deep down inside really won’t make us any happier than we are. I guess what I’m trying to say is... Happy Holidays!!! I’m just back from a 3 week tour and feeling the repercussions. Like you (probably), I’m reading through this issue of The Chop for the first time. It sure looks like a good one. One to be cherished for all time. Unless, there’s a power outage this winter and you need to burn your copy of The Chop to keep warm. If that happens, don’t feel bad, my friend. Es ist Dezember! Wie glücklich wir sind, eine weitere Runde gefräßigen Konsums genießen zu dürfen, alles wegen der Geburt eines magischen Babys, von der die meisten von uns nicht glauben, dass sie magisch war, aber immer noch gern genug Schrott einkaufen, dass wir diese Kapitalismus-geschwängerte Geschichte akzeptieren und Dinge erstehen, die wir zu brauchen glauben, jedoch tief in unserem Innern wissen, dass sie uns nicht glücklicher machen werden, als wir sind. Ich glaub, was ich sagen möchte ist… Frohe Feiertage!!! Ich komme gerade von einer dreiwöchigen Tour zurück und spüre die Nachwirkungen. Wie du (vermutlich) blättere ich zum ersten Mal durch diese Ausgabe von The Chop. Sie sieht definitiv nach einer guten aus. Nach einer die für alle Zeit gehegt werden wird. Außer es gibt einen Stromausfall diesen Winter und du musst deine Kopie verbrennen um warm zu bleiben. Falls das passiert, keine Sorge mein Freund. Foto von Matthias Henke ‘Keiner weiß erstmal was Kulku bedeutet.’ Muss man auch nicht, wenn man in den hypnotischen Sound der Band eintaucht und zwischen Singschläuchen, Orgelpfeifen und klirrendem Altmetall die Orientierung verliert. Am 12. November ist ‘bohemian drips presents: Kulku’ erschienen. Das Berliner Label spezialisiert sich seit 2014 auf dreidimensionale Aufnahmen an akustisch interessanten Orten. Das Album wurde in einem stillgelegten Wasserspeicher in Pankow unter Verwendung eines Kunstkopfmikrophons aufgenommen. Andreas (A), Gatis (G) und Max (M) von Kulku über die Herausforderung einer Nachhallzeit von bis zu 18 Sekunden und die Idee von ‘primitive music’:
“Bring mich da hin und blas!”
Inwiefern war die Vorbereitung für die Aufnahme anders, gab es ein Konzept? A: Ich wusste nur, welche Instrumente in dem Wasserspeicher funktionieren, weil ich da vor Jahren schon mal eine Klanginstallation gemacht habe und früher war dieser Raum ja für alle offen. Wir sind damals mit der alten Band schon mit den Orgelpfeifen reingegangen und das Konzept war lediglich, die richtigen Instrumente da reinzubringen. Einige von euren früheren Songs sind geprägt von vielschichtigen, polyphonen Mustern. Hat die lange Nachhallzeit in dem Wasserspeicher eine andere Dynamik diktiert? A: Absolut, ja. Du kannst keine Rhythmus Sachen da drin spielen. Du hast dann sofort so einen Brei. Der Raum gibt den Sound vor. Du musst mit dem Raum spielen, sonst geht da gar nichts. War die Aufnahme mit einem Kunstkopfmikrophon eine technische Herausforderung, der ihr euch stellen musstet, oder konntet ihr euch voll und ganz auf die Akustik des Ortes einlassen? M: Das einzige, womit wir ein bisschen gespielt haben war der Raum an sich, Bewegungen. A: Die Spieler konnten sich wie im Labyrinth um das Kunstkopfmikrophon herum bewegen. Man konnte auch rennen, solche Sachen haben wir mit einbezogen. Wichtig war uns, diesen magischen Moment durch Improvisation herzustellen und deswegen wollten wir das eigentlich nie proben.
M: Dieses Orgelpfeifen Stück haben wir öfter untereinander gespielt, aber in dem Raum war es völlig anders. A: Die Orgelpfeifen, das ist auch verrückt. Wenn man die Bass Orgelpfeifen in diesen Raum rein trägt, die sind wie dafür gemacht. Von wegen ‘Bring mich dahin und blas.’ Das ist unglaublich, der Sound ist auch so inspirierend. Das ist die größte Freude, das zu tun dort, mit den Orgelpfeifen, die ja normalerweise in der Kirche stehen und nicht per Mund geblasen werden. Hat es Spaß gemacht in diesem besonderen Raum zu sein? A: Ja, es macht Spaß. Aber der ist immer kalt, der hat immer dieselbe Temperatur. G: Ich fand es auch teilweise anstrengend. Wenn man versucht hat sich zu unterhalten in dem großen Raum, hat sich die Sprache so überlappt. Also man musste sich sehr reduzieren in Bewegungen und auch in dem was man sagt. Oft hat man dann lieber gar nichts gesagt. Es war über den ganzen Tag wichtig, dass man es komplett reduziert.
Weil diese Nachhall Geschichte war total intensiv, die ganze Zeit. Man ist total eingetaucht, unter Wasser sozusagen. Wo ist jetzt die Musik? Oder alles ist Musik, irgendwie. Man muss dem anderen vertrauen, die ganze Zeit. Und wo fängt man an? Ganz lange Pausen zwischen den Tönen. Also ein ganz neues Gefühl von Raum-Zeit. Würdet ihr sagen, dass das Album so sehr an technische oder räumliche Bedingungen geknüpft ist, dass es gar nicht für eine Aufführung gedacht ist? A: Es ist nicht an eine Aufführung geknüpft. Aber das Label macht vielleicht nächsten Frühling dort eine Klanginstallation und dann würden wir eine Soundperformance machen. Dann würden wir extra für den Raum ein Konzert vorbereiten, das wäre schön. – continued page 4 3
– continued from page 3 K: Wenn ich jetzt richtig recherchiert habe, ist ‘Kulku’ Finnisch und hat mehrere Bedeutungen. Welche ist für euch die treffendste und wie ist der Name entstanden? A: So etwas wie Bewegung oder Gang, Lauf, Veränderung. Aber es hat nicht direkt die Bedeutung Veränderung. Eigentlich: in Bewegung zu bleiben. Ich habe mit Johanna, meiner Frau, die Band angefangen. Die ist aus Finnland und dann haben wir zu zweit so märchenhafte Musik gemacht, so ‘Freak Folk’ würde ich es nennen. Und dann brauchten wir halt einen Namen und haben uns für ‘Kulku’ entschieden. Was mir auch wichtig war: einen Namen zu haben, der eigentlich erst einmal wertfrei ist. Keiner weiß erst mal was ‘Kulku’ bedeutet. Das gefällt mir auch an Namen wie ‘Can’ oder so. Du beseelst den Namen, du gibst dem Namen Bedeutung irgendwann, indem Du eine Musik über Jahre schaffst.
So nervig jegliche Art von Fremdzuschreibung auch sein mag, kommt man an zwei Begriffen nicht vorbei, wenn man ‘Kulku’ liest: Kraut und Orff. (Schmunzeln) Seid ihr wirklich so sehr von Krautrock oder irgendwelchen Avantgarde Komponisten beeinflusst? A: Wir haben alle unterschiedliche Einflüsse, aber jetzt nicht so dominant. Moondog, Can, Captain Beefheart. Jeder bringt da seine eigenen mit und die Musikinstrumente kamen eher durch einen langen Sammlungsprozess zusammen. Eine Faszination für einfache Instrumente und einen puren Sound. Keine Verfremdung durch Effekte und auch eine Faszination für indigene Musik, ‘primitive music’ Ist ein komischer Begriff, aber es gibt in diesem Musikbereich fantastische Sachen, man will es halt nicht kopieren, sondern selbst entwickeln.
Angst vor Angst Für die letzte The Chop-Ausgabe dieses Jahres sollte hier, wie es sich für ein Musikmagazin gehört, der Jahresrückblick stehen. Aber wie schreibt man so etwas? Im letzten Jahresrückblick der Spex lautete es: »Ein Scheißjahr geht zu Ende«, titelten wir im Dezember 2014 – nur um 2015 feststellen zu müssen, dass ein Scheißjahr selten allein kommt. Islamistischer Terror, behördliche Betriebsblindheit, wiedererstarktes Nationalistengedöns und das gute alte Allheilmittel Krieg haben die Welt noch ein paar Grad mehr in Schräglage gebracht. Wie immer ist die Frage: Was kann und sollte Pop dagegen tun? Das Rezept zum Schreiben eines Bestseller-Jahresrückblicks in drei Schritten könnte so aussehen: 1.) Man betrachte rückblickend Symptome des Weltgeschehens und formuliere Diagnosen: Vieles geht schief, die Welt befindet sich in Schräglage. 2.) Man wage Voraussichten: Symptome und Diagnosen haben sich wiederholt und werden sich wiederholen. Ein Scheißjahr kommt selten allein. Die Welt wird weiterhin wanken. 3.) Man versuche sich, wie immer, an der Aktivierung der Leserschaft: Wie kann und sollte der Pop dabei helfen, die
Unklar bleibt, wie nach 1.) und 2.) der letzte Schritt zu realisieren ist. Jahresrückblick und Voraussicht schmecken bereits beängstigend, fast betäubend, und weniger aktivierend. Unter dem Motto der „Diversität“ und mit dem Ziel der Förderung junger lokaler Popkulturschaffender finanzieren Senat und u.a. Spex seit Sommer 2015 jährlich das Pop-Kultur Festival in Berlin – eine ganz besondere Stadt. Eine dreiviertel Million stand dazu in diesem Jahr zur Verfügung. Ein Zuschuss, dessen Höhe sich nach SPD-Wunsch im Rahmen des neuen rot-rot-grünen Koalitionsvertrags zukünftig vervierfachen soll. Die Off-Kultur antwortete im Sommer 2016 kritisch und aktivierte sich kurzerhand selbst. Auch in Zukunft wird sich wiederholt die Frage stellen müssen, welche Welt dort zu wessen Nutzen im Namen der Popkultur gefördert wird. Jemand schrieb einmal wegweisend: Keine Kultur verträgt ihre Förderung. Solange sich die Jahresrückblicke wiederholen, sich die Symptome vermehren und beschleunigen, bleibt der verängstigten pop-kulturell interessierten Leserschaft einzig die Sehnsucht, der kommende Jahresrückblick bliebe schlichtweg aus. Angst vor dem Jahresrückblick 2016. Angst vor dem Jahresrückblick 2017. Welcher Zeitgeist statt Aktivierung und Aufrichtung produziert wird, weiß, wer im Jahr 2016 regelmäßig die Ratschläge

A: Ja. Wenn etwas einfach zu bauen ist, dann machen wir das selber. Durchs Instrumente selber bauen kriegt man halt auch seinen eigenen Sound. Oder auch durch Töpfe, die wir gefunden haben, die nur diesen einen Sound haben. K: Also ist es eine bewusste Entscheidung größtenteils auf Gitarren zu verzichten? A: Ja, absolut. Dadurch, dass wir uns auf Drums und Xylophone und so etwas reduzieren, sind wir auch gezwungen einen eigenen Sound zu entwickeln. Also mich interessiert es, einen ganz eigenen Sound zu entwickeln. Und es macht Spaß, sich im Raum zu versammeln und nur akustisch zu spielen. Das ist einfach eine schöne Sache. Und das wollen wir halt ausreizen, das Ding. – kulku.bandcamp.com

Keine Kultur verträgt ihre Förderung, ausgenommen die Angstkultur. Also lassen wir es doch einfach mit der Angstkulturförderung durch Diagnosen, Voraussichten und Aktivierungsversuche. Wir heilen die Angst, erfüllen die Sehnsucht und verkünden hiermit die Erlösung straight aus der Off-Kultur: Das Jahr 2017 findet nicht statt.

Black Cracker is going to present his second opus, supported by a digital 3D video landscape - if you can imagine Chris Cunningham creating an anime with Björk, well this comes pretty close to the result. Q&A For years now, Julien has been busy curating two places where you can experience both local & international live acts, from Beans (ex-Antipop Consortium, Madame Claude, 2008) to Os Mutantes (a cult Brazilian band, Marie-Antoinette, 2016). In 2015, he and his second partner JC got into the crowdfunding, developing the french platform KissKissBankBank for german-speaking countries. Ilil teamed up with Julien after working with JC at his sales company Films Boutique. So what is it you do, exactly ? We help project owners and creators through the whole campaign process. Putting a page online and asking for money is just not enough to get support for a project . There is a lot more to work around that, like communicating and producing content, not just goodies. You need to invest so that people get caught and invest themselves into your project. Transparency is also a plus, people like to know what they are paying for, even when it is more tricky than expected to do so.

Plus their album “The Dancer” was recorded by Steve Albini!!! Support by the pretending-tobe-tough-but-all-super-sweetnice-guys Trucks. They’ve also been in the recording studio and working on some nice new stuff. It’s probably the Last Show you can see before you go home for the holidays. Or, if you’re like me and home is 1000 euros too expensive to get to, its the last time to party with your friends before they leave you in an eerily empty Berlin for a week.
Q&A with Julien and Ilil about the crowdfunding platform KissKissBankBank and the music venues Madame Claude (Kreuzberg) and Marie Antoinette (Mitte). Von Yannis Trouinard. What is it the idea behind it all ? For us, the idea is to help build a community around the creators, especially film makers and musicians. We are now also looking into the fashion scene. Recently we got a new mentor/partner for the musical projects involving recording, mixing, and/or mastering sessions: Salon Berlin opens its studios next spring. We are very happy that Christian Mevs and Sylvain Livache can be part of this, as they are extremely talented sound engineers and lovely guys. Together with Salon Berlin – and us at The Chop – you present a special event at Madame Claude on the 13th of December. Tell us more about it. We want to have a meet & greet about crowdfunding for musicians. We will held a workshop at 8pm, followed by live acts at 9. Donation at the door or simply free with a Chop Chip (more infos about the event on our calendar page 6/7). What are your coming highlights for 2017 ?
There is still a lot to be learned, especially here in Germany. More projects will be developed, like within the last 12 months we had more than 20 campaigns, among which 3 didn’t make it through to the funding goal. This is getting exciting, with all the great feedback we got from the people who put their trust in us. Besides, Marie-Antoinette will host a soliparty for Antje Öklesund on the 20th of January. The team is now looking to relocate after the building was teared down by the new investors. Side-note: for those who don’t know Antje, it used to be one of the most interesting venues of Berlin. Another year goes by. Here’s what happened musically from the perspective of Berlin’s music people, who told us their 1. favorite album, 2. favorite song, 3. favorite new artist and 4. favorite music-related moment of 2016.

Listening to all Big Boys records again and getting excited for the long awaited documentary about them and maybe another movie tour :) Andre Jegodka – What Difference Does It Make, Future Sailor 1. Angel Olsen – Woman. Angel Olsen was a really talented folk singer back in the days, but with her masterpiece „woman“ she turned into something, that is so special and so unique that you always wanna listen to her songs again. If someone would ask me what is modern Rock ‘n Roll I would say: Pretty easy, it is „Woman” by Angel Olsen 2. Cosines – Let´s start it over again. A perfect jingle-jangle pop song with a really sad message: It’s about your favorite venue that closed and you wanna restart. But you can’t! Not in London, New York or Berlin. So dear reader of the Chop: get your ass up and put on Bands in every fucking basement you know! 3. The Goon Sax – Yes. The singer is the son of Robert Foster. Catchy poptunes at its best. The songs are so fragile, but smelling like teen spirit at the same time. When you sometimes think about bad home haircuts and eating ice cream alone you will love this band. 4. My favorite moment is also the saddest at once, the closing of Antje Oeklesund. Everyone who made that place special came out and played the last songs, drank the last booze and saved the last dance for this night. Unforgettable!

Listening to music in 2016 was pretty much as good as in 2015 and the year before - that’s super. Playing music gets better. OFF-Kultur-Shows at Finale Sportsbar (Merci to those, who came over), SKELTEON$-Show at Westgermany - felt special.

A Slow Steve Tour Report/Photo Essay

According to a scientific study I produced during a 3 week tour, Slow Steve bassist and Tetris enthusiast, Carley Vectan takes an average of 3.4 naps per day. Although my study was initially empirical, I was drawn into irrepressible fascination by this sleeping man, ironically to the point of insomnia. While he napped effortlessly, I lay awake unable to risk missing him strike a new pose. His ability to nap went beyond a skill to become an art, like frozen ballet. It is understandable that the swaying of the tour-van would rock him to sleep, but the artistry of Charley’s naps stem from the sheer diversity and improbability of their occurrence. In Kassel, a raucous backstage after-party was to him but a lullaby. In Essen, the sandman brought sweet, ineffable dreams despite being 4 meters from a funky Klaus Johan Grobe sound check. In Luxembourg, he woke from a nap in a bed to move to a sitting nap on a couch across the room. Why this change to a seemingly less comfortable position? Clearly, this is not merely about resting. Through his medium of expression, Charley challenges the societal conventions of what is “normal” or “comfortable”. Although he lies down, he is taking a stand. He sleeps in the light to show us we don‘t need to cower in the dark. Cooking with #2 – ERIN

Want-One Won-Tons This month, I was invited for dinner by my friend, office pal, and almost-butnot-really neighbor Erin after her request to cook for me when she saw last month’s recipe (remember the delicious burritos ?). Turns out you have to use ALL the wonton wrappers once you’ve defrosted them, which means we had to make TONS of WONTONS and luckily, she invited some friends over so I didn’t have to do too much (it’s not very easy to take notes with hands full of ground pork or mashed potatoes). Here you go with this month asian-inspired recipe, cooked with love by Erin (Paper and Iron) and Anders (Re-Make/Re-Model) with helping hands from Anita (Paper and Iron) and Luise (Tendre Biche).

SZECHUAN CUCUMBER SALAD
Mix in a bowl : coriander, ground pork meat, sliced thai chilis, sliced green onions, sliced garlic and ginger, sesame oil, salt and pepper. Add an egg and mix with hands.

And then for both : Defrost wonton wrappers. Add a small amount of filling. Water the sides of the wrappers with warm water and fold. You can basically fold them in the shape you want, we went for triangle shapes, little bags or coin purses, ravioli shape and freestyle. The most important thing is that they are well closed to avoid losing the filling while cooking. Fry in oil until crispy and serve.
Cut the cucumber in half (lengthwise), squash them and cut into small pieces. Place in a colander, add sugar and salt, place weight on top and leave for 15min that they get rid of excess water. Mix the cucumber and dressing in a bowl and serve with rice.

Top of The Chop Best 5 stations on the U8
by Joe Kelly I live in Wedding, work in Mitte, and do a fair bit of fun timing in Kreuzberg and Neukölln so I’d say I’m pretty much an expert when it comes to the U8. Now, you might be thinking, ‘who gives a shit?’ or ‘big wow dude’ but let me just share this Ricky Martin quote with you ‘A hero can be anyone from Gandhi to your classroom teacher, anyone who can show courage when faced with a problem. A hero is someone who is willing to help others in his or her best capacity.’ Living la vida loca folks. 1 - Osloer Strasse
3 - Hermannplatz
Bit of a wild card at number one here I know. Thing is you might not realize it but this place is stacked. Firstly it’s home to what must be the finest late night falafel sandwich you can find under the ground. “Sandos, Libanesischer Imbiss” is where it’s at, I’m telling you. Awesome. Added to this there’s a couple of spätis, a sparkasse cash machine, a pizza place (slightly pointless cos of Sandos), a fresh fruit juicer and salad man (can’t always have falafel) and there’s also a McDonald’s but honestly why would you go there when there’s that falafel sandwich?. Seriously, Sandos rules. 5 stars
I have mixed feelings about Hermannplatz. It’s often the gateway to many parties which is fun but I’ve also had people attempt to pickpocket me here. Thing is though it’s yellow and I like that and also if you’re not getting off here pretty much everyone else is so you can get a seat when you’ve been standing. It has cash points too which is good right? To be honest I just wanted to write about the falafel place at Osloer and I’m scraping the barrel at this point. Erm 3.5 stars
2 - Alexanderplatz Ok so I know Alex is kind of a shit place to get around and it’s often full of people who don’t understand the basics of good pedestrian etiquette. Stick with it though because some parts of the station look like an East Germany meets Wes Anderson doing a tiled Atlantis and that’s very cool. Also there’s a Mishba where you can get a pretty decent Burrito for less than 4€ and none of the next 3 stations have that so Alex gets the nod. 4 stars
4 - Rosenthaler Platz Because it’s Orange? 3 stars 5 - Moritzplatz I once saw an amazing saxophone player busking here, but I also saw someone smoking the crack the same day so swings and roundabouts I guess. I do really like the name though and it was one of the first places I went to in Berlin (mandatory trip to modular for some totally necessary fluo gaffa tape). Major minus points for not being able to tell where the fuck your exit is. 2 stars
– Disclaimer: When I started writing this I was perhaps a little bit hasty to declare myself an expert on the subject. I’ve since realized that I just wanted to write an article about how Osloer Strasse is so often overlooked and how good that falafel place is. Sorry if I got your hopes up.
