REPORT gratitude 2022

You have helped young children heal from some of life’s deepest hurts.
What a year 2022 was! We are in awe of your generosity that has once again allowed us to walk alongside the youngest in our community as they are healing from some of the most difficult life experiences.
Each day we hear stories of the difficulties that our clients have experienced, including abuse and neglect, but when you walk the halls of The Children’s Place, you hear laughter and squeals of joy. Thanks to donors like you, childhood is restored. At The Children’s Place, little ones get the chance to revel in being a child. Whether it’s going on a field trip to the zoo for the first time, picking out a snow cone from a food truck on the playground, or even just chasing bubbles with friends, children whose mental and social needs are being addressed are able to experience the joy of childhood.
As we have continued to embrace the new reality that has emerged after the pandemic, we have seen young children affected in new and complex ways. Children born just prior to or after the onset of the pandemic spent their earliest days in an uncertain world. They had less social exposure, often distanced from extended family and removed from the systems that work to keep children safe, like schools, doctors’ offices and places of worship. The traumatic events that these children have experienced impact their mental and social health as well as their development. As a result, many of these little ones have delays that make it harder for them to learn and play. When The Children’s Place walks alongside these children and families, we help them heal from their past, strengthen relationships and set them on a trajectory for a happy, healthy life.
This work is not easy, but your support is making it possible. Through faithful donations, attendance at our events, volunteering and more, you are making a difference in the lives of these children and families. Thank you for believing in this mission.
Ann Thomas President & CEOFour-year-old Amiyah was very guarded and anxious when she started therapy in our Counseling Center. Living with her grandparents, Amiyah was struggling to process the traumatic events she previously experienced, and she had very limited language skills due to a speech delay.
When Amiyah started therapy, she only wanted to enter the playroom if her grandmother was nearby. It took several sessions before she felt comfortable coming into the playroom by herself. She would often play out the same traumatic scene in the sand tray week after week, using the miniatures in our sand tray therapy room to illustrate her pain.
In weekly therapy sessions, our therapist worked with Amiyah to help her process her hurts and grief and develop coping skills. In therapy she shared her loyalty concerns. We eventually learned that Amiyah’s younger brother was starting to call her grandmother “Mom,” and our therapist discussed with Amiyah’s grandmother what it would be like if Amiyah also called her “Mom.” The caregiver was very open to this idea but wanted the children to each make their own decision. Amiyah was very excited to start calling her grandmother “Mom” just like her brother did.
Before long, Amiyah began opening up in therapy sessions and also at home with her family. She is not as anxious, and this simple gesture gave her a sense of a permanent relationship. Amiyah now demonstrates nurturing skills and allows others to care for her. She shows a new understanding of her emotions and uses her words to communicate her needs. With the support of the team of therapists in our Counseling Center, Amiyah is receiving the care she needs to heal and thrive in her family and beyond.

Lee was just 19 months old when he started in our Day Treatment program. Because of the traumatic events he experienced in the first few months of his life, Lee was exhibiting significant delays with motor, cognitive and language skills.
He started in our youngest classroom, the Blue Butterflies, and immediately began weekly mental health therapy sessions, along with both individual and group occupational therapy and speech-language therapy sessions. He especially loves the art and music therapy groups with his classmates. These exciting and innovative ways to channel his energy and feelings have been a huge benefit to him; his mind and body are more calm, so he can better learn.
For five days a week, year-round, Lee experiences high-quality early education in one of our Day Treatment classrooms. His nurturing teachers connect with him individually to help him feel safe at school and gain the confidence to try new things. He joins his class on daily walks around the building, enjoys new sensory experiences like water tables and Play-Doh, and his teachers partner with him daily to help him develop the relational skills he needs to make friends.
Lee has come out of his shell and his confidence has increased dramatically. He shows a curiosity for the world and is energetic and excited to try new things. Lee now scores in the average range on a standardized development assessment and continues to progress in his adaptive, personal-social and cognitive skills.

When a child enters the foster care system, a series of steps are launched to evaluate the child’s medical and developmental needs. The child is referred to a doctor for a medical exam and often referred to The Children’s Place for a developmental assessment. In approximately an hour-long appointment, the child meets with a diagnostician at The Children’s Place to see if the child knows age-appropriate things like their ABCs or colors, evaluate whether they can skip and jump, and more. Assessments & Screenings is our largest program based on number of children served each year. Some children will continue with us in other programs, while others may be referred to one of our partner agencies.
Raising a child is hard work, and families may encounter additional challenges when that child has experienced a traumatic event. Our Family Support Services program is here to walk alongside these families, helping them learn new tools and strategies to strengthen their family bond. This unique program envelops the family with support and training to help caregivers learn new parenting skills, including how past sad and scary events may impact their child’s needs and development. Services are offered both individually and through caregiver groups, which have the added benefit of allowing families to connect and build relationships with others raising young children who have experienced traumatic events. Caregivers utilize our Family Support Services program as an addition to their child’s involvement in our other programs.
Our Counseling Center offers individual and family mental health therapy services for children ages two to eight on an appointment basis. Our trauma-responsive therapists support children as they process life’s hurts—from loss to divorce to abuse. Traumatic wounds are similar to physical injuries—they hurt, and the sooner treatment begins, the quicker the pain subsides and prevents long-term suffering and future complications. With flexible appointments offered during business hours and evenings, we seek to remove as many barriers as possible to make therapy accessible and attainable for all families.
Day Treatment is our most intensive and comprehensive treatment program. A therapeutic early education center, Day Treatment offers high-quality education and intensive mental health, occupational and speech-language therapy in individual and group settings. The Children’s Place’s Day Treatment program is unique in Kansas City and has been a model for similar therapeutic early education centers nationwide. What looks on the surface like a typical early education program is far more than that, with intense therapeutic services integrated throughout the day. Early intervention offers a turning point for young children who have experienced trauma. It allows them to receive specialized and personalized support to help them heal from traumatic events and overcome developmental delays giving them the foundation they need to thrive in kindergarten and beyond. While this program serves a smaller number of children than some of our others, the intensity of Day Treatment offers a proven model of early intervention that can help reduce healthcare costs for a lifetime.
A child experiences a traumatic event, which could be loss of a caregiver, exposure to violence, a lack of basic needs and more. Most of the children we serve have experienced multiple traumatic events.
CHILDREN’S DIVISION
The Children’s Place is here to walk alongside children and families who have experienced traumatic events. Every child’s journey to The Children’s Place is unique, but this illustration shows a common path that many follow.
After a referral, the family turns to The Children’s Place to help their child heal from their hurts. Most of our referrals come from the Children’s Division, nonprofit community partners, and family and caregivers.
During a one-time appointment, the child meets with one of our diagnosticians for an assessment to evaluate their physical, speech language and cognitive abilities. Depending on their age, we see whether the child can do things like grip a crayon, jump or identify their colors. We refer children to a range of community partners depending on their needs, including The Children’s Place’s programs.
If the child has a history of traumatic events but is not currently exhibiting developmental delays, we may refer them to individual or family appointment-based therapy in our Counseling Center to process their hurts and heal.
If the child has experienced traumatic events and has a significant developmental delay or has been expelled from other daycare providers, they are often referred to our Day Treatment program to receive early intervention and mental health therapy in an early education environment.

When we closed the doors to most visitors during the pandemic, just one volunteer remained. Brinda Thompson insisted on continuing to fill backpacks full of food each week to ensure that the children in our Day Treatment program had food to eat all weekend long.
Brinda was honored as Volunteer of the Year at the inaugural Gratitude Bruncheon in August 2022 for her years of service and commitment to the mission.
“I enjoy helping others and feel I get more in return then what I give,” Brinda said. “It’s a joy for me to assist with filling backpacks to ensure these kids have food all weekend long. Children are the future, and whatever we can do to help them is what we need to do.”
Often one of the first people that families open up to about their child’s experience, Jaimi Jenkins witnesses a lot in her role as Admissions Coordinator for The Children’s Place. Jaimi has served in several positions in her 16 years on our team, but she currently handles all inquiries about services and referrals from families, the Children’s Division, Children’s Mercy and more, then helps determine the best path forward for each child.
“The Children’s Place means a lot to me,” Jaimi said. “Working here has taught me about trauma, the various ways to heal from trauma and about resiliency. At The Children’s Place, the children are free to be children. We are here to help them learn the importance of positive connections, relationships and what safety feels and looks like.”
Mitch Peterson has given faithfully as a Healing Hero, one of our monthly donors, for four years, providing sustainability for the agency and ongoing support for our programs. Mitch also gives of his time as a board member, but is particularly passionate about having an ongoing impact as a Healing Hero.
“I feel a responsibility to give back to the community and especially groups of people in our community who need to heal from some of life’s challenges,” Mitch said. “The need is always present, and I felt like a once-ayear donation wasn’t reminding me enough of the need in our community. Monthly giving is such a simple way for me to support The Children’s Place.”
The Children’s Place was grateful to be the beneficiary of two planned gifts in 2022, which support our endowment and provide sustainability for the agency.
Planned gifts help supplement our ongoing fundraising efforts and enable us to build a safety net to ensure the agency will endure as Kansas City’s trauma treatment center for future generations.
