A Message from the Mayor It is Chataqua Time again and I welcome everyone to Chewelah and this year’s event! I hope that you enjoy all the food, crafts and events that are offered throughout the park.

I also hope that you will take a little extra time to visit our merchants and eateries while you are in town.

You will find Chewelah hospitality everywhere you visit.

Do not make this the only time of year you come to Chewelah. It is a great place to stay for skiing, golfing, hunting, fishing, boating….the list is endless. Have a Great Chataqua Weekend – and I hope to see you again, real soon!

Chewelah has been the site of one of Northeast Washington’s most celebrated summer festivals, and 2012 marks the 39th anniversary of Chewelah’s Chataqua celebration.

During the second full weekend in July each year, the city is host to tens of thousands of people from all over the Northwest and Canada who come to enjoy the three and a half days of summer food, arts & crafts, sporting events, live entertainment, and yes, just plain fun. At the heart of the festivities is the juried outdoor Arts & Crafts Fair which is held in Chewelah’s eight-acre city park.

The festival draws an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 patrons who come to shop, eat (at the food court), drink (in the Beer Garden), be entertained (by live entertainment on CenterStage) and have fun (with the Carnival rides, games, baseball, fun run, golf, and the Children’s Pavilion).

Community Celebrations, which produces the Chataqua every summer, is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization founded in 1974. For 39 years its mission has been to plan, develop and promote recreational, educational and cultural activities and facilities for residents of and visitors to Chewelah.

Proceeds from Chataqua have enabled Community Celebrations to fund numerous projects, including the

pavilion with seating in the park. The group’s long-range goal is to develop a performing arts center in Chewelah.

With the recent organization of PACA (Chewelah Performing and Cultural Arts Center) work is progressing as funding becomes available.

The folks at Community Celebrations would like to say, “The difficult is doable - The impossible takes a little longer.”

The annual summer celebration in Chewelah is based on the original Chautauqua, started in 1874 and still going strong at Lake Chautauqua, New York. Chautauqua took to the road with huge tent shows to bring “culture” to the hinterlands. President Teddy Roosevelt called it the most popular form of entertainment in the United States.

The traditional format was revived in Chewelah in 1974 with a simplified spelling. Chataqua has grown to become the largest festival of its kind in eastern Washington and third largest in the state. Teddy would love it!

Chataqua (Chautauqua) is a Seneca Indian word roughly translated to mean “meeting place.”

Chataqua voted Best Small Town Festival

By Kellie Trudeau The Independent Staff Of all the small town festivals that take place throughout the summer, Chewelah’s Chataqua stands out above the rest for the readers of The Pacific Northwest Inlander.

Chataqua received thousands of votes to become the Best Small Town Festival of 2012 in The Inlander’s annual “Best of the Northwest” Reader’s Poll.

“We in Chewelah have always known it’s the best festival,” said Chataqua Coordinator Sharon Ludwig. “I am so excited that Spokane now recognizes that.”

The Inlander is a weekly magazine that reaches 179,000 people in Spokane and Kootenai counties each week. Now in its nineteenth year, the “Best Of” poll gives readers a chance to vote for their favorites in dozens of categories ranging from restaurants and hotels, to concert venues and local television personalities.

Voting took place in February and March and two to three times the normal number of votes were cast due to increased interest in online voting.

Chataqua placed in front of second and third place finishers, Pullman’s Lentilfest and Odessa’s Deutschesfest, in the write-in survey.

Inlander featuring Chataqua (Page 88 of the March 22-28 issue), the local festival made a quick impression on reader Michelle Fulton although she only visited once in 2011.

“One, it’s that small town feel when you leave Spokane and head up there,” Fulton said. “And second, the venue is great. The public park with the river running behind it and the history behind it and learning what it’s all about.”

The 39th Annual Chataqua will be July 12-15, 2012. It is organized and operated by Community Celebrations.

“Winning this award in 2012 is truly an honor and great recognition for Chewelah and Community Celebrations,” said Sue Lind, secretary for Community Celebrations.

Honored Citizen 2012

Chamber of Commerce recognizes Mary Firor

By Kellie Trudeau The Independent Staff After more than 50 years in Chewelah as a nurse and dedicated volunteer, 91-year-old Mary Firor has been named the Honored Citizen of 2012.

The Chewelah Chamber of Commerce, represented by President Tracy Ferrell, Theresa Shannon and past president Jared Arnold, officially presented Firor with the annual award at Sunny Acres Senior Housing on June 21.

Firor, a 12-year Sunny Acres resident, said she did not know what was going on when she showed up in the community room that day to find many close friends and family. She said she was especially confused to see her daughter, with her daughter in law and grandchildren, because she was sure she was supposed to be at work.

“It really took me by surprise,” Firor said.

Firor was nominated for Honored Citizen by Sunny Acres Manager Rebecca Blankinship and almost half of the Sunny Acres residents. Arnold said the Chamber selected her because of her longtime of public service to Chewelah.

In the nomination letter, Blankinship listed the many organizations Firor has volunteered with in Chewelah. In addition to serving 30 years as a nurse

at the St. Joseph's Hospital, she has been a part of the Chewelah Rebekah Lodge and hospital auxiliary for 34 years. She also served 10 years at the Food Bank and was the secretary of the Board of Directors of the Senior Citizens of Chewelah Valley for 6 years.

Blankinship said Firor has a positive attitude and well-loved personality.

“Mary is the sweetest, kindest person; she would do anything for anybody,” Blankinship said.

“We love her…She’s a doll, always busy and still very with it. She's just an amazing person; I want to be like her at that age.”

Originally from Lapwai, Idaho, Firor moved to Chewelah in June 1960 when her husband, Reino Macki, was hired at a nearby sawmill.

They were married in Chewelah in 1944 although they lived in Mullan, Idaho until their permanent move to the small town in Northeast Washington.

Firor has always enjoyed Chewelah for many reasons and is glad to have made it her home for 52 years.

“It’s a small enough town, I'm not a big city person,” Firor said. “I like the climate here and always found the people to be friendly and helpful; always right there to lend a hand.”

“I always say I would like to stay here until they carry me out feet first,” she laughed.

Once in Chewelah, Firor immediately started working at St. Joseph’s Hospital as a registered nurse. She had wanted to be a nurse “ever since I can remember,” she said and was first certified in 1942 after completing three years of school in Lewiston, Idaho.

At St. Joseph’s Hospital, Firor worked as a general nurse doing anything that needed to be done from helping deliver babies to surgical nursing.

She said when she would attend any career training in Spokane, the nurses there did not understand how she did everything that she did in the small hospital.

baby and still clean up the mess,” Firor said.

She retired from St. Joseph's Hospital in 1991.

Toward the end of her career, after turning 65 in 1986, Firor started volunteering at the hospital gift shop that is operated by St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary.

She said she enjoyed meeting all the people in the gift shop. She especially appreciated what the gift shop offers to the Long Term Care residents who are able to buy something for a loved one at home.Firor continued volunteering there until 2010.

“I worked long enough,” she said. “I wanted to take some time for me.”

As a resident at Sunny Acres Senior Housing since 2000, Firor remains busy with many activities including crocheting, crafts and gardening in the Sunny Acres raised garden beds.

She plants a variety of produce in a 4x4 bed and 4x8 bed growing everything from tomatoes and artichokes to cucumbers and potatoes, and shares what she does not need with other residents.

Firor also enjoys trips to the Farmer’s Market on Fridays as well and shopping in Colville with her neighbor.

“It’s hard for me to sit still and not keep busy,” she said.

Firor has five children who all graduated from Chewelah, 13 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and three more on the way. She was married to Reino Macki until 1966 when he passed away. She then married George Firor in 1968, who passed away in 1976.

As Honored Citizen, Firor will be introduced at Chataqua CenterStage on Thursday, July 12, and will ride in the parade on July 14.

“Mary is one of those people you are just glad you met,” Blankinship said.

The Chewelah Little League has 13 teams participating in the Chataqua tournament this year for the 10 and under division and 12 and under division.

They will be playing Friday through Sunday at the Chewelah Bowling Alley field on West Lincoln Avenue, and the Barbour Complex behind Jenkins High School (also on West Lincoln).

Chewelah Youth Baseball and the Chewelah PTSA are gearing up for a big fundraiser this upcoming Chataqua weekend.

Chataqua Challenge - 5K & 10K Annual run (or walk) is a great way to start a Chataqua Saturday

The Chataqua Challenge 5K and 10K races will be happening again this year on July 14, 2012 beginning at 7 a.m. There are fantastic trophies designed by David Govedare for first place male and females winners of each race and medals and ribbons for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in nine different categories.

Walkers are welcome on either course.

The early start will give participants a break from the summer heat - and get most everyone to the finish line in time to view the Chataqua parade, which starts at 10 a.m., and enjoy all the activities at the park.

Registration is at East 7th Street and Lincoln Street starting at 6 a.m. The entry fee is $13 ($5 without a shirt) or $16 late entry after July 4. Same day registration is OK. If you need a registration you can print one off at http://www.chewelahchataqua.com.

Who’s Who on CenterStage Mountain Melodies Chorus - Thursday 5 p.m.

Mountain Melodies Chorus of Sweet Adelines will bring their ringing tones of barbershop harmony to CenterStage at 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 12. Mountain Melodies has been sharing its unique style of harmony with Northern Stevens County for over twenty years, especially during Valentine Season when they have performed as many as 150 Singing Valentines in a three-day period. In June, they performed for Relay for Life in Colville and in August will perform for Colville’s Rendezvous Days. Come join the chorus on CenterStage for a program full of easy-listening favorites from the 50s and 60s and also some gospel favorites. This year they will be joined on Center Stage by Ann Benedict’s Northern Ballet and Performing Arts.

Full of heartfelt lyrics, their music is dynamic and appealing, yet it is unconstrained by “formulas” for hit songs. It’s real, it’s earthy, and it doesn’t pull any punches when it hits you right in the gut. The band is serious about its ability to perform live.

Herrick is comprised of Donna (Mandolin/Lead Vocals), Kerry Herrick (Bass/Vocals), Zach Ballard (Drums/Percussion), and Jefferson Rogers (Lead Guitar/Lap Steel/Acoustic). The band is brimming with showmanship and attitude and tight/strong vocals and harmonies. Herrick’s live high energy performance translates seamlessly to their new album, “New Dance.”

Ann Marie Benedict passes on her passion and training in ballet to her students at Northern Ballet and Performing Arts, with an emphasis on personal discipline, physical rigor and grace. This teaching philosophy draws local dancers to personal achievement and rewards audiences with the beauty of each dancer's unique expression of the art form.

Spectra is a fusion of three seasoned performers who offer original compositions and their own brand of light rock, blues, R&B, standard covers, latin, western, swing, and jazz.

The Jukebox Time Machine was invented by “Fast Jack” Pulliam 10 years ago with the desire to bring the 60’s to people not only in sound but sight. With period costumes, a bit of theater, and a lot of energy, the whole park becomes the stage and the stage a party.

Wanna be a rock star? With “time travel” everything is possible. You may end up singing, playing tambourine, or even being a go-go dancer with the band. A limbo or hula-hoop contest, prizes and surprises round out the show.

Well, maybe you don’t have to! If you have been wishing for one more chance to see these great artists, here is your opportunity! Men in the Making has resurrected all these legends in what has become commonly known throughout the Northwest as the Shake, Rattle & Show.

Men in the Making is comprised of four very creative men with the ability to transcend time and space in an electrifying review of the greatest artists we have all come to know and love. From groups like the Temptations, to the Beatles; Ike & Tina Turner to the Guess Who; from the Monkees to the Moody Blues.

Coeurimba - Saturday 11:15 a.m.

Coeurimba is known throughout the Northwest for its exciting performances of African music. The band plays a collection of traditional and modern songs, primarily originating from Zimbabwe. The rhythmically intense music is pounded out on large wooden xylophones called marimbas.

Two of Clubs plus One - Saturday 1:30 p.m.

Two of Clubs have been entertaining audiences with their juggling and comedy since 1989. They begin their stage show with a comic club juggling routine.

Passing around a volunteer is next. The line gets longer and the passing gets harder. Time for an “America’s Funniest People” award-winning tire pump duet? The performance gets hotter when Bill pulls out the fire eating and then Tina pulls out the torches! They make the impossible look impossibly easy and the audience loves them. Bring the kids!

The Engell Family Band - Saturday 5:30 p.m.

Enjoy a variety of good old-time music with a great new sound! The Engell Family is all acoustic with upbeat rhythm and wholesome harmonies. Kevin Wolfe‘s Hypnosis: Fact Or Fiction is a fast paced and funny hypnosis show. It’s a show that will keep everyone laughing especially with Kevin’s special improvisational style, you never know what’s going to happen. Not only does the audience have fun, but most importantly, so do the volunteers!

The Kelly Hughes Band - Saturday 8 p.m.

Multi instrumentalists Don Thomsen and James Hunter have joined forces with guitarist Rick Rubin and fiddler Morgan Andersen in the configuration known as Floating Crowbar, fast becoming known as the best traditional Irish band in the area. With the use of Irish pipes, flute, whistle, banjo and mandolin as well as fiddle and guitar, Floating Crowbar plays a high energy mix of Irish instrumental music and songs drawn from traditional and contemporary sources.

Coming from a wide variety of backgrounds and musical interests, they bring together their common passion for Irish music, good humor, mutual respect and friendship into a show that will be enjoyed by any Celtic music fan. Floating Crowbar will be performing with the Haran Irish Dancers.

Other CenterStage Entertainment Sara Cochran’s Piano Students - Thursday 4 p.m. - Keyboard virtuosos will provide an entertaining musical interlude.

Honored Citizen Introduction - Thursday 6 p.m. - Thursday evening is the time to honor Chewelah’s 2011 Honored Citizen.

This is country/rock at its best! Whether it’s a driving up-tempo arrangement or a “someone done me wrong” song, this group from State Line is one hot bunch of pickers and grinners. Their three-hour show will be the closing act on Saturday night. Kelly says it’s “knee-slappin’ fun. Sing along and dance on the grass.”

Arts Pavilion offers activities for kids throughout the weekend

The Chewelah Arts Guild recently finished building the permanent Children’s Pavilion in the park to be used at its first Chataqua. Find the full schedule of Children’s Pavilion activities on Page 14.

The Children’s Art Pavilion is ready to use! The Chewelah Arts Guild is pleased to invite children to join in the fun offered during the 2012 Chataqua celebration. The Children’s Pavilion is located across the creek from center stage and provides a place where parents can bring their children to escape the hustle and bustle of the crowd. The children can enjoy various “Art” experiences.

On-going activities include water play where kiddie pools are filled with fresh water everyday and children can build flumes, water slides or maybe they would prefer to cool off in the water. Young artists can create masterpieces by painting with tempera paint-we provide paint shirts, but just in case, the paint is easily washed off. Arts Guild artists will be painting designs on small faces and hands at various times during the weekend.

Professional artists are scheduled during the weekend to provide an authentic art experience for the young patrons.

Children can create pet rocks, paper monsters, design a puzzle, as well as make junk-band instruments among other activities.

A limited number of gourds will be available for children to decorate a birdhouse or design a gourd rattle; only one gourd per child please!

All of the Children Pavilion activities are free to the public compliments of the Chewelah Arts Guild, the Kiwanis and Community Celebrations.

Cheertaqua Summer Kids Camp

Cheertaqua, an annual summer kids cheerleading camp sponsored by the Jenkins High School Cheer Squad, has taken on a tropical theme for the 2012 Chewelah Chataqua Festival.

“Aloha from Cheertaqua” is the theme for the camp’s second year where boys and girls, ages 5-11, take two days to learn a short cheerleading routine to perform in the Saturday

Chataqua parade. The 2012 camp will be July 12-14.

The two-day clinic portion of the camp will be held at the JHS Gym on Thursday, July 12 and Friday, July 13 from 8:30 a.m. to Noon. The kids will have fun playing tropical-themed games and activities in addition to learning cheers taught by the JHS Cheer Squad. Free sack lunch will

be provided each day of the clinic courtesy of the Chewelah Schools Summer Food Program.

Cheertaqua costs $25 per child and $15 for each additional child living in the same household. Cost includes a t-shirt to wear in the parade, which has been designed by Katie Sharp of Everviolet Design Group and sponsored by many community

businesses.

Registration is due by June 29 for participants to be guaranteed a t-shirt.

Late registration is accepted, but it is not available at the door.

Chataqua’s Beer Garden offers refreshments for thirsty adults The Beer Garden is a shady place for adults (age 21 and over) to enjoy visiting with friends and sipping some suds while catching the entertainment on CenterStage.

The Beer Garden is operated by Community Celebrations in strict compliance with Washington State Liquor Control Board rules and regulations.

Chewelah Golf & Country Club Hosting Annual Chataqua 2-Man Best Ball/Scramble Tournament

Every year the Chewelah Golf and Country Club hosts an annual men’s golf tournament during Saturday and Sunday of the Chataqua Festival.

Preregistration is required to participate in this two-day event open to two-man teams.

For the 2012 tournament, Saturday, July 14 is Best Ball and Sunday, July 15 is the Scramble.

The Chewelah Golf & Country Club is a 27-hole facility open to the public. The beautifully maintained course is designed to challenge golfers of all ability levels. Scenic views and glimpses of abundant wildlife are extra benefits.

An RV park is adjacent to the course and includes modern laundry facilities and showers. Three tennis

courts and the driving range are all within a short walk.

The only 27-hole course in the region, the combination of both a nine and eighteen-hole venue has golfers raving about the versatility of the facility. The well designed fairways, traps, water hazards and greens are proving to be a major attraction for golfers from throughout the Inland Northwest.

49˚ North Mountain Resort

Ski resort makes progress on Angel Peak double chairlift

Here is an artist’s rendering of the mid-mountain lodge to be built at 49 Degrees North.

Over the next three years 49° North will build a new chairlift and a new mid-mountain lodge.

The ski area has purchased a double chairlift for Angel Peak. Steel fabrication started this February and the placement of towers over snow started the day after the ski area closed for the season. The placement of concrete is scheduled for July, motor room construction for August and the installation of the rope and chairs in early September. Federal and State commissioning of the new Angel Peak chairlift will be in late September of 2012. The new Angel Peak chairlift will be ready for operations at the start of the 2012-2013 winter season. The Angel Peak chairlift will serve 1,144 vertical feet and it will be 4,336 long and move 1,100 people per hour on Washington’s newest chairlift-served summit, Angel Peak.

“It has taken years of preparation and hard work by the Forest Service and the Ski Area to get into a position to undertake this major expansion. The final environmental approval was granted last year for the new chairlift and without the support of Sterling Saving Bank this project would not be possible,” said John Eminger, President of Chewelah Basin Ski Corporation.

The initial construction phase of the project will employ approximately 12 people, and the resort expects to add an additional six to eight employees to work as lift operators on the Angel Peak chairlift and food and beverage handlers at the mid-mountain lodge. The addition of the new chairlift and lodge will also serve to increase annual skier visits to the resort, which will result in additional tax revenue for federal, state and county governments. should see more visitor traffic in their establishments as the number of snow sports enthusiasts travelling to the resort continues to increase.

“The upper half of Angel Peak has seen very little traffic over the last 2 seasons,” said Rick Brown, Ski & Snowboard School Director. “Adding a chairlift to the summit of Angel Peak will change that dynamic entirely. The new chairlift will give skiers and riders a great opportunity to become familiar with the new terrain, and also provide additional glade access,” said Brown.

The Angel Peak project area sits adjacent to the proposed Quartzite Wilderness Area, the southernmost unlogged drainage in the Colville National Forest. Gazing into this rugged area, one can see massive stands of old-growth Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, western hemlock, and western cedar. Needless to say, the sight is breathtaking. “From the top of Angel Peak, our guests will have the opportunity to view one of the most pristine ecosystems in the southern Colville National Forest. Hopefully folks will take interest in this amazing resource,” said Eminger.

Construction of the mid-mountain lodge is set for the summer 2013. The new 4,800 square foot mid-mountain lodge will be located at the top of the Blastface and Silver Ridge trail junction, overlooking the Pend Oreille River valley and the buffalo and Pow Wow grounds of the Kalispel Tribe of Indians.

The facility will be three stories and includes easy access from Silver Ridge, a heated deck, a meeting area in the day-light basement, restrooms, a dining area with in-floor heating, and a ski patrol dispatch location. The lodge will also feature full food and beverage services including beer and wine. The new

lodge will provide stunning views east to Sunrise Basin and the surrounding Selkirk and Cabinet mountains of Washington, Idaho, Montana and Canada.

After reviewing several architectural designs 49° North’s management team selected local Chewelah architect Tom Bristol with a design that is both efficient and aesthetically pleasing. “Having a satellite lodge in place up on the mountain will not only provide our guests with convenient food and beverage service in a beautiful setting, but should also take pressure off of the base area lodge during busy weekends and holidays,” said Eric Bakken, 49° North’s Mountain Manager.

49° North Mountain Resort is Washington State’s second largest ski and snowboard resort, and is located 10 miles east of the City of Chewelah. 49° North is consistently voted as one of the region’s best family ski resorts. The resort features wideopen groomed runs, moguls, desert-dry powder, and hundreds of acres of legendary tree skiing. The summit of Chewelah Peak offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and mountains, and the nearly 2,000 vertical feet to the base area and lodge facilities. Located on 2,325 acres within the 1.1 million acres of the beautiful Colville National Forest, that boasts exciting wildlife such as the grizzly and black bears, cougars, wolves, bald eagles and the last remaining herd of mountain caribou in the United States. 49° North Mountain Resort is a genuine winter wonderland.

“We are very fortunate to be able to operate a business in such a beautiful setting, and we are optimistic that the expansion project will not only bring additional dollars to our local economy, but a sense of appreciation for our outdoor resources as well,” said Eminger. “With 75 years of skiing history it is important to remember you are just the caretaker of a mountain for a generation.”

The use of Chewelah Peak in the winter was formally recognized by the Colville National Forest in approximately 1935. Two ropes rows were used until the late 1940’s. In 1950 the two story Chewelah Mountain Lodge was constructed and in 1951 the installation of a double chairlift ended the rope tow era. In 1970, the Chewelah Basin Ski Corporation was formed to develop and operate a ski resort in its current location in a basin approximately two miles east of the old area on Chewelah Peak. Construction of three lifts, trails and a day lodge were completed in 1972. A fourth lift and new trails were added in 1980. In 2006 the East Basin was developed with new trails and a quad chairlift nearly doubling the size of the resort. The 2012 Angel Peak chairlift expansion is one of a long line of winter recreation improvements on Chewelah Peak.

On August 4, the Blue Angels Car Club will be hosting a large car show and community event in Chewelah City Park called Rev’ It Up For The Vet’s. The basis of this event is to thank our brave servicemen & women as well as donating 100% of the event proceeds to Wounded Warrior Project.

Multiple military based organizations like Wounded Warrior Project, American Legion, Point Man International, & Tri-County Veterans Stand Down as well as multiple car clubs are helping to make this event successful.

Events on the day of the show include live music by Visibly Shakin’, auctions, raffles, hot wheels races, letters to overseas, military honor

guard, and a military recognition ceremony.

Entry fee will be $10 per car which includes a goody bag and free raffle ticket. All money raised that day from the show entry or any other event will be donated to Wounded Warrior Project.

With a goal of $5,000 to be donated, the entire community is encouraged to come take part in all

Rev it Up for the Vets has taken the place of James Dean Days, which was a car show that has been in the City Park on the first Saturday in August for the last 20 years. The Wanderers Auto Club decided to stop doing James Dean Days after their 20th show in 2011.

Everyone Loves a Parade The 2012 Chataqua Parade begins at 10 a.m.

PARKING INFORMATION Parking anywhere along the parade route is prohibited after 7 a.m. on Saturday morning. (Please refer to Parade Route Map) Improperly parked and/or unattended vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense. Once a tow truck has been dispatched, a towing fee will be charged.

Prior to 10 a.m., customers needing to make necessary pick ups from Main Street businesses will be allowed access by the police officer at the intersection of Main and East Fifth Street. Vehicles must be off the street by 10 a.m.

PARADE PARTICIPATION Everyone is welcome to join in the Chataqua Parade on Saturday morning.

Line up starts at 8 a.m. in the staging area adjacent to the Municipal Center (City Hall) on Clay St. and East 3rd.

(See Map) The Parade starts at 10 a.m.

Pre-registration is appreciated, but not required.

On arrival at the staging area, have one person from your party register with the Parade Registrar at the corner of Webster and 2nd St. East to obtain

a number and placement in the parade.

Once you have been assigned a number and directed to your staging locations, please get your float, car, group, horses, logging truck (whatever) to its proper location as quickly as possible. Private cars must be removed from the area.

Ask the Parade Registrar helpers for proper (non-tow away) areas in which passengers or support vehicles may be parked.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARADE ENTRIES Throwing anything, including candy, from vehicles or floats towards the parade watchers is strictly prohibited to prevent children from dashing out into the street. Candy may be handed out by person(s) walking close to curbs.

Please be careful rounding corners.

The parade route has some sharp turns and spectators, especially kids, tend to crowd into the street.

Chataqua Fun Shoot

The Chewelah Trap Club’s annual Chataqua Fun Shoot will be held Saturday, July 14, beginning at 8 a.m.

• Shoot cards will be $25 for five shoots.

• Two shots each station, any yardage, straight or wobble (you pick). Payout to each winner will be $10 cash.

• There will be Annie Oakleys, Buddy Shoots, and whatever anyone wants to play.

• Annie Oakley will pay 60 percent of pot with 1-7 payout.

• Buddy Shoot will pay $20 cash to the winning team.

• Bring your money, shotgun and shells, a lot of fun will be had.

Melody Riders

Riding club has long history in Chewelah area The Melody Riders Saddle Club (MRSC) of Chewelah is one of the oldest horse-oriented clubs in the state of Washington, formed in the 1950’s. The goal of the club has always been to provide family activities for the people of this area. The club maintains an arena located one mile south of Chewelah on US Highway 395.

In prior years, events have drawn people from as far away as British Columbia, north Idaho, Walla Walla, and Wenatchee.

The past twelve years, MRSC has produced a Western Games Competition Series, which consists of six days of competition scheduled throughout the summers on Saturdays. Five years ago, they also began offering a barrel racing series, TGIF, scheduled for each Friday evening prior to the

Annual Youth and Open Horse Show The 3rd Annal Youth and Open Horse Show will be July 14 and July 15 at the Melody Riders Arena in Chewelah. The show is sponsored by Horse Heritage Educational Program.
