Level 2 drought

FINCH â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Even with the amount of rain recently, it hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been enough to roll back the official drought level a notch. On Sept. 10, South Nation Conservation issued a release stating the Level 2 designation, imposed July 16, remains in place after a review of precipitation and river flow.

The Water Response Team found that threemonth rainfall indicators correspond to a Level 1, while streamflow indicators suggest a Level 3 low-water condition.

That adds up to a continuation of Level 2 status, with watershed residents still asked to voluntarily cut their consumption by 20 per cent.

The fall should see normal precipitation over the next three months, but higher than seasonal temperatures are expected to affect water levels throughout the watershed.

But the Heelers â&#x20AC;&#x201D; dispersed among the four takeoff points â&#x20AC;&#x201D; naturally dominated the 2012 total, with $38,000 raised.

Russellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Walking Wounded came second by bringing in just over $6,700.

Last year, more than 4,000 patient visits took place at WDMH to have a colonoscopy, use the Ontario Breast Screening Program, or have chemotherapy treatments.

In addition, many surgical procedures occur at WDMH, including biopsies and cancer surgeries.

Thirty-five volunteers also assisted the Heel â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;n Wheel effort, supervising pit-stops along the routes and other support activities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re getting really positive feedback from all of the people,â&#x20AC;? said Christina Enright, the Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s manager of Community Engagement, at

the arrival point inside the Winchester Lions Hall.

Organizers moved the final stop away from the field opposite the hospital because of the inclement weather. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve adapted to the weather, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve adapted to everything,â&#x20AC;? said Enright.

Registrations were being accepted right up to the morning of the event, and the $500 minimum sponsorship level for adults ($400 for children) was waived two weeks earlier to help bolster numbers.

Building on this year â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s start, organizers also used the occasion to actively solicit registrations for the 2013 edition, Enright said, giving them plenty of advance time to meet the minimum next year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of people called us in the last six weeks, and they wanted to be involved but they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have enough [collected],â&#x20AC;? she explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a great learning

experience.â&#x20AC;?

Wilda Marriner of Chesterville was part of the Wii Not Fit team that left from Finch and raised $3,260. The wind may have buffeted her group but didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hold them up. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We took two steps, and then we took two steps backward,â&#x20AC;? she laughed.

Marlene Pyper of Winchester walked in from Osgoode. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have a torn tendon in my foot, and I really shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have done it, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m incredibly stubborn,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Seven communities were initially chosen as starting locations for all walkers, runners and cyclists including: Crysler, Finch, Morrisburg, Greely, Osgoode, Russell, or South Mountain. The final routes travelled included Finch, Osgoode, Russell and South Mountain. By merging some of the routes, fewer resources were required, including food, shelter, portable washrooms and even volunteers, therefore making the event more cost effective.

Morrisburg High School to be renovated after all Council rejects demolish-and-rebuild option Lois Ann Baker Record Staff WILLIAMSBURG â&#x20AC;&#x201C; It was a close call, but South Dundas councillors decided to go ahead and renovate the Morrisburg High School rather than tear it down and re-build an entirely new structure to serve as the townshipâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new headquarters.

The options were considered at Augustâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s council meeting after it was discovered that tenders for the renovation far exceeded the budgeted amount. After reviewing all the reports, councillors had a lively discussion where opinions varied as to how they should proceed.

Deputy Mayor Jim Locke started the discussion by saying he felt a rebuild was the way to go. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve come to the firm conclusion that in my opinion it is in the best interest of the taxpayers to invest in replacing the three-storey portion,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Councillor Jim Graham disagreed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I know itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a big project with a lot of money involved,â&#x20AC;? he said, adding they had already invested a lot of money and applied for grants to help fund the overhaul, which he felt they might not get if they rebuild instead of renovating. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In my mind, restoration

of the collegiate is the right thing to do for this community, and I support going ahead with the project as we have it,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Councillor Evonne Delagarde thought a rebuild was the way to go as they could make the new building smaller than what the current building is and therefore could cost less than the new build was estimated to cost. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The gap between rehabilitating and building new is closing to where itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about half of a million,â&#x20AC;? said Delegarde. Delegarde also pointed out that when renovating an older building, there could be some unforeseen problems that would drive the costs up. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think going forward with a new building you have to look at the future costs, and one of the major things is there will be no need for an elevator which would reduce future maintenance costs,â&#x20AC;? she said. Delegarde also felt that the heating costs would be significantly reduced in a one-storey building. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve pondered this for six ways from Sunday,â&#x20AC;? said Councillor Archie Mellan, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economically viable to put that kind of money into it.â&#x20AC;?

He added that it seemed to be too much of a risk.

At this point it was clear which direction council was headed in as only Locke was in favour of renovating, however, Mayor Steven Byvelds added his opinion that the building should not be demolished in favour of a new build. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was in favour of the re-build,â&#x20AC;? he said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;especially if we got the $1million from the Community Infrastructure Improvement fund that we had an excellent chance of getting, however if we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t rebuild, we wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be getting that $1-million.â&#x20AC;?

After each councillor weighed in once more around the council table, only Mellan changed his decision siding with Byvelds and Locke to renovate the old high school. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve thought this over and changed my mind six times a day for the last three weeks,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to change my mind again.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a grand old building and if weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to keep the thing, we better keep it. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d much sooner keep the building.â&#x20AC;?

The discussion ended with a recorded vote, and the motion to renovate the old high school was passed.

In the same vein, the 2012 event served to introduce North Dundasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new Chief Administrative Officer Angela Rutley to the townshipâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s business community.

The Chamber and the township will next team up for an October event at The Gathering House in Chesterville.

The Road Home Bag tags are progressive Theoretically, a single-person household in North Dundas household need never recycle a single thing — ever. And that’s still true with the township’s very conservatively phased-in bag limit reduction, dropping from four to three to two. (Sounds vaguely little like Stephen Harper’s 7-6-5 GST cut, doesn’t it?)

For households with only one or two people, not a solitary tin can, pizza box, newspaper or shampoo bottle would ever need to hit the bottom of a blue box with the township now accepting three bags per week.

Such individuals still have more than ample capacity at the curb to stuff every last compostable food scrap and broken-down laptop computer into three weekly sacks of polyethylene — a uniquely Canadian innovation — and the impending two-bag limit still leaves enough room to avoid the hassle of ever having to compost or recycle at all, truth be known.

This is one of two main inequities of one-sizefits-all garbage-bag policy. On the edges, some households will have way more than they need, but others — with a large number of children, for instance — will be unfairly inconvenienced to an extra degree.

The other inequity stems from the financing of garbage collection through general property taxes, which treats a rich household’s trash as somehow more expensive to retrieve from the curb than a poorer neighbour ’s. This arises from a municipality’s reliance on the property assessment system as a basis for taxes.

But garbage collection is one of those areas of municipal management that could be quite easily shifted off the backs of taxpayers — and assessment — and almost entirely onto users.

If households had to buy a township-issued tag for each and every bag filled up with garbage — with no basic bulk freebie limit of two or three — the township would be engaging in one of the fairest examples of user-pay policy possible.

The War of 1812 and British Home Children remembered Carolyn Thompson Goddard Record Contributor The summer of 2012 is drawing to a close and it was full of fun and educational events, a number associated with the commemoration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812-14. From Kingston to the Quebec border there have been historical re-enactments and encampments, a War of 1812 Arts ’n’ Artifact Show, English Country Dancing evenings, naval activities on the St. Lawrence/Lake Ontario and on the Friday night of Labour Day weekend, the very successful “Walk Through History” Fundraising Dinner held by the Chesterville & District Historical Society. This weekend there will be a commemorative event of the little known Battle of Matilda or Battle of Toussaint’s Island.

Located between Iroquois and Prescott, Toussaint’s Island was the location of the first local engagement of the War of 1812. On September 16th, 1812, a group of American soldiers occupied the island until repelled by a combined British and Canadian force and on that day two hundred years later at 11:30 am there will be a gathering of interested persons who will recount the activities that occurred nearby 200 years ago and remember all of our brave military personnel who have served our country. September brings with it more historically significant events such as the British Home Child Day in Ontario on September 28. It hardly seems like a year has passed since the first British Home Child Day in Ontario event was held at Upper Canada Village on September 28th of last year. I remember walking out of the Village after a delicious dinner at Willard’s Hotel and on all sides of me people were expressing their delight with the activities that they had participated in throughout the day.

There was a book launch (The Street Arab by Sandra Joyce), a series of Vignettes that told stories associated with British Home Children, story sharing and displays in the Harvest Barn. Now, a year later the organizing committee is back at work putting the finishing touches to the 1st Anniversary British Home Child Day in Ontario event which will be held once again at Upper Canada Village.

Many of us will still wonder who are the British Home Children and why has the Ontario government set aside a day for them. British Home Children were youngsters from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales who ranged in age from a few months old to 16 years in age. They came from many different backgrounds, many were orphans or children whose parents were unable to care for them,

or perhaps they lived in workhouses or maybe on the streets in large urban areas. As their numbers increased philanthropic organizations began to be formed to assist or rescue these children and give them a chance at a better life.

Eventually these organizations began to send them to Canada to work as farmhands or domestics in hopes that they would have opportunities for a better life.

These were the British Home Children and between the 1860s and 1930s over 100,000 came to Canada, the large majority settling in Ontario.

It is estimated that between 12-14% of the population have a BHC ancestor and British Home Child Day in Ontario has provided an opportunity for all of us to recognize the contributions that these young people made to their adopted homes.

This year at the event in Upper Canada Village, special recognition will be paid to the Quarrier ’s organization which operated in Scotland and from which many of the “Home Children” in this area came.

The following day, September 29 there will be a BHC Symposium/Workshop at the Township of South Stormont Municipal Hall from 9-4 there will be displays, speakers and the opportunity to speak to the authors who were present at the event at UCV. These authors include Sandra Joyce, Beryl Young (author of Charlie – this book is about a BHC who lived in Inkerman) and others. September 16, 1982 The Rothwell-Osnabruck K-13 school (formerly Rothwell Public School and Osnabruck District High School) was officially opened last Thursday amid a flourish of bagpipe music and congratulations.

An assembly Thursday morning, just two days after the start of the 1982-83 school year, brought together all the students, from kindergarten through to Grade 13, as well as the chairman of the SD&G County School Board Mahlon Zeran, the director of education, Roger Leblanc, area school board trustees Sarsfield O’Connor and William Fleming, and Rev. Ian McAvoy and Father Thomas Villeneuve.

Although supporters of a new major show ring and educational display building at Kemptville College of Agriculture and Technology (KCAT) made a strong lobby to the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Dennis Trimbell, he remained uncommitted as to the possibility of such a facility.

While at a luncheon meeting of the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Progressive Conservative riding association at the Country Kitchen here on Monday, KCAT principal John Kurtis, SD&G MLA Osie Villeneuve, Allison Fawcett and Basil Dawley of Winchester spoke publicly of the need for such a facility in Eastern Ontario.

September 13, 1962 Chesterville council opened its mail last week for September and found a letter from the Department of Planning and Development. The department sent along the results of the rental housing survey held here in early summer.

Because of insufficient interest and a lack of sewerage in the town, the project is to be shelved for the time being.

Hydro affairs were in their usual good shape except for a few small complaints. In particular, it would appear something is interfering with radio reception on Queen and Main Streets. The finger of suspicion is pointing at the new high intensity tube lights now used for street lights. The clerk was instructed to get in touch with the light manufacturer at once and have the matter investigated.

A petition was read by the clerk. It had been offered by the residents of Albert Street as a plea for further attention to the recently chipped street.

Council considered the matter al length. A directive from the Department of Highways orders that tar mixture such as might be used on the street are not to be placed after September 1. Because of this, the clerk was instructed to write Mr Garnet Droppo, the spokesman of the group, to that effect.

September 29, 1932 The annual school fair of Finch Township was held at Berwick on Friday and proved to be a huge success. Ideal weather prevailed and a large crowd was present. The entry list far exceeded last year and the keen interest taken by pupils and their parents was most encouraging. The exhibits were displayed in a large tent on the grounds.

James A. Simpson, of Morrisburg, agricultural representative, was well pleased with the success of the North Stormont school fair. There were seven schools appearing in the parade, as follows: S.S. 11,8,7,10,3,9,4.

Armstrong’s cogent warning Mayor Eric Duncan is deservedly happy and enthusiastic to see his promised rural road-surfacing program back on track in 2012. At this rate, old gravel roads will literally be a thing of the past in several years.

But at the most recent council meeting, Councillor Al Armstrong, an avuncular figure to the youthful mayor, cautioned that not every found dollar should go into the tar-and-chip effort by default. Armstrong was quite right to point out that there are existing asphalt roads that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Indeed, especially in the villages, where more dollars of taxation are collected per kilometre of sometimes bumpy old black-top, the township would do well to strive for a balanced and fair approach.

NORTH DUNDAS â&#x20AC;&#x201C; After reportedly being involved in a domestic incident that warranted police presence on Sept. 1, a 32-year-old female driver was later stopped on County Road 43 under the suspicion of impaired driving. She was arrested and will appear in Cornwall court on Sept. 13 to answer to charges of Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

domestic incident. A 47year-old male and his girlfriend were involved in a verbal altercation that resulted in the male assaulting the female. He was held in custody pending a court appearance and was charged with Assault and three counts of Breach of Probation.

Break-Ins SOUTH STORMONT â&#x20AC;&#x201C; A break-in on County Road 2 in Ingleside on Sept. 10 has left a business without a computer. Officers were called into the business after someone removed it sometime between Sept. 7 and 10. The investigation is ongoing.

Is it time to outlaw clearing new fields with fire?

Nelson Zandbergen Record Staff SOUTH DUNDAS â&#x20AC;&#x201D; South Dundas Townshipâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unprecedented use of a provincial water bomber to quell a brush-pile fire in a farmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newly cleared field raises questions about the suitability of burning as a farm practice in the year 2012 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; especially in a township now employing a professional fire chief hailing from the Greater Toronto Area.

In light of the Dundela blaze on Labour Day weekend, The Record engaged South Dundas Mayor Steven Byvelds in a series of email questions about the fallout of his fire chiefâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision to call in the Ministry of Natural Resources water bomber.

Byvelds, a cash cropper himself, seems to indicate in one of his final answers that chipping and logging could be an alternative to burning windrows of cleared brush.

Byvelds also happens to head a township that experienced a particularly disastrous brush-pile fire a few years ago, when smoke blew over Highway 401 and triggered a collision that killed a trucker.

The mayor prefaced his remarks by pointing out that he couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t answer for the other members of council.

A. Not that I know of.

A. Hard to tell. It may be early as the invoices have not been sent out.

Q. Have you or any members of council received a call or correspondence yet from a landowner requesting that the municipality not charge him the cost of firefighters observing his brush piles burning in a field near the hamlet of Irena [a few days before the Dundela fire] ... ?

A. No. Q. Have you or council recently heard from anyone questioning the level of fire department response to brush-pile fires initiated by farmers who do have a traditional expectation of burning off the remains of cleared woodlands to make new fields (a process that always produces smoke and some level of nuisance)?

A. I have heard from one who had concerns but it was

Q. Do you think South would have Dundas attempted to fight that fire in Dundela so aggressively to the point of even calling in water bombers, say, a year ago, prior to the hiring of a professional fire chief from the city?

A. That would be hard to answer. Chief McDonough has brought his expertise to our fire service and has a good knowledge of what needs to be done especially to protect the lives of the firefighters and others.

Q. Do you believe the South Dundas fire department is becoming a little more urbanized in attitude and a little less sympathetic to the farming sector in rural South Dundas?

A. The service is more knowledgeable and professional. There may be some challenges with the new operational plan but I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe it is one that cannot be worked with. Council agrees and fully supports how our department is working.

Q. Is the burn ban back on in South Dundas really as a means of calling a â&#x20AC;&#x153;time outâ&#x20AC;? on farmers in the township, after last weekend [the Dundela fire] â&#x20AC;&#x201D; in

which case every one else is being punished collectively as well? (Note that there's no burn ban in North Dundas.)

A. No. Up to Tuesday evening, it was extremely dry and even with the rain it has not really made things wet enough to be safe.

Q. Do you believe the farming sector in South Dundas has to â&#x20AC;&#x153;pull up its socksâ&#x20AC;? with regards to the way cleared fields are being burned lately?

A. I think we need to work with the farming community to come up with a solution to all the issues.

There is a respect for the ag community in what they are doing but it must be done in a way that is safe, contained and does not harm others which includes the smoke.

Q. Would you know how much money the township has spent responding to fires

on recently cleared farmland, say, since the real push to create more tillable acres began three or four years ago, in concert with the rise in commodity prices and the ethanol mandate?

A. I do not but it costs between $2,000 to $3,000/hr in equipment and personal costs to fight a fire.

Q. (On a related note, I wonder how many tons of carbon sequestered in 60year-old trees has been recently released into the atmosphere, in Dundas County alone, to help meet the demand for â&#x20AC;&#x153;greenâ&#x20AC;? ethanol, and how long it'll be before that carbon is ever recovered again by drivers filling up with ethanol â&#x20AC;Ś) A. No comment.

Q. After last weekend [Dundela fire], do you believe itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time for a treecutting bylaw and very strict regulation and oversight of the way woodlots are

allowed to be cleared?

A. I do not believe it is time to have a tree cutting bylaw. The operation of landing must be done in a way that causes less potential issues.

Q. Is it time to outlaw burning as a technique when clearing land, for example, by requiring all logs to be shipped out for pulp/lumber and remaining brush and stumps to be chipped, not set alight?

A. I do believe there are methods of land clearing that are more efficient and will allow for less to be burned. It is not the easy way out but makes sense in the long run.

Q. Is the township dealing with any lawsuit, or has the township or its insurer paid out any sum, in relation to that brush-pile fire of a few years ago that fogged-in the 401 and led to the death of that trucker?

A. No comment.

Village entry signs in the latter township have been replaced by Shane Signs after the original signs â&#x20AC;&#x201D; installed by another company â&#x20AC;&#x201D; barely made it through the first few weeks of winter.

Residents started noticing the metal signs were bending and at first it looked as though they had been hit by snowplows.

In just the past few weeks, more than 30 competely new signs have been placed throughout the

community and have been fitted with plywood backing and new posts to ensure their rigidity.

Colonelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sign Shop of Inkerman was the original contractor for the signs and the township is currently handling this as a legal matter, according to Mayor Eric Duncan, who intends to address the matter at the next regular council meeting, Sept. 18.

South Dundas Council notes Hanes Rd. speed limit to remain SOUTH DUNDAS â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Residents of Hanes Rd. in South Dundas had their request for a reduction in the speed limit defeated at the Sept. 4 council meeting.

Residents of that road had asked for the speed limit to be reduced to 50 km/h, citing safety issues on the road that was just .45km long. However, Hugh Garlough, Manager of Public Works, felt it would set a precedent and did not recommend the action.

Council agreed and the motion to not grant the reduction was carried.

SD ponders code of conduct Lois Ann Baker Record Staff WILLIAMSBURG â&#x20AC;&#x201C; South Dundas Council took a step towards adopting a code of conduct for council members, at the last meeting when a motion put forth by Mayor Steven Byvelds was read and passed.

Byvelds felt that it was necessary to look at the idea of a code of conduct, but immediately said it was not due to any major issues this council had. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe it is a course of action that will make us a better council,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is a pro-active approach to avoid problems that can occur.â&#x20AC;?

Byvelds said the code will provide confirmation of each individual councillorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s role and how they respond to the community and their

behaviour in the community.

Standards of confidentiality will be addressed as well as working with staff on operational issues and respect for the decision-making process. It will also address how to respond to litigation and possible litigation issues and communications with the public and media. Byvelds said it would also contain reputation management, guidlines to the accepting of gifts and the engagement of incompatible activities. He would also like to see conflict of interest more closely defined, and a passage on professional development, interpersonal behaviour and compliance and implementation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A Code of Conduct is not unique to South Dundas,â&#x20AC;? said Byvelds, â&#x20AC;&#x153;As many municipalities have implemented them in various

versions.â&#x20AC;? He added that he would work with staff to bring forward a code that is complete and one that council can work with. He said they would then have a process for issues to be dealt with.

It was agreed around the council table that this was a good idea and one they would support. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We need something to guide our council and set some rules,â&#x20AC;? said Councillor Jim Graham. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is the first step that will bring forth the code,â&#x20AC;? said Byvelds, thanking council for the support.

Byvelds advised that they would probably be looking at other drafts of codes to use as a basis for their own which will be introduced at the next council meeting and voted on at the council meeting after that.

Maple Ridge: Jewel of community Lois Ann Baker Record Staff MAPLE RIDGE Considered a â&#x20AC;&#x153;jewel of the communityâ&#x20AC;? by board members, the Maple Ridge Cemetery is an integral and important part of Dundas County. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The importance is vast.

From historical, to being the jewel of our community by being picturesque, the ideal location and a very needed entity in our communities,â&#x20AC;? said Dave Black, board member. Recently, Black, along with some other board members, members of the Chesterville Historical Society and members of the media met at the cemetery office to discuss the importance of the cemetery in the community.

The cemetery has been in operation since 1866 when the first trustee board purchased four acres of land, and is the final resting place of a great number of prominent families including the Beaches, Casselmans, Sutherlands and Allisons. In its 38 acres, it has room for 18,000 full burials, and is currently the home of approximately 13,000. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Making us the largest town in Dundas county,â&#x20AC;? joked Black.

The cemetery is completely owned by the board and the board is charged under the Ontario Municipal Cemeteries Act to maintain and operate the cemetery under strict regulations. To do that, it takes money.

The cemetery is primarily funded through

sales of plots, donations, and the perpetual care fund.

Up until the mid 60s people used to get annual bills for a small amount which paid for the upkeep of the cemetery. But then the government stepped in to stop the annual care, and created a system called perpetual care. The money comes strictly from the sale of the plot. Forty percent of the cost goes into the registered fund. The cemetery is only able to use any monies generated from that fund such as interest, etc. It is not allowed to touch the principle.

The perpetual fund is somewhere in the neighbourhood of $600,000 and can only release around $1,100 to effectively run and maintain the cemetery each month.

Some of the lots can cost over $2,000 for their perpetual care.

When interest rates were higher it was easier to maintain, but with lower interest rates, it creates a challenge as less revenue from the principle is generated.

The biggest fear of the board is if they could no longer maintain the facility, it would fall to the local governments under â&#x20AC;&#x153;abandonment of cemetery.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to avoid that at any cost,â&#x20AC;? said Black. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of the reasons most of us got involved with the cemetery,â&#x20AC;? said Black, â&#x20AC;&#x153;weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re very proud of this area of Ontario. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re very proud of Maple Ridge Cemetery.

Black added that they drew up budgets and cut expenses and have found a lot of people willing to volunteer their time. Thanks to the combined efforts of the people involved, the cemetery is well maintained and well run.

And now, Maple Ridge is on an even keel financially.

They have always been a not-for-profit organization, and now have received a registration number allowing them to provide receipts for donations for income tax purposes. Black is hoping this will make it more of an incentive for future donations.

Tommy Allison has been with the cemetery since 1983, and recently handed over the reins to Jamie Shadbolt. During his time at Maple Ridge, Allison was in charge of maintaining the gravesites and the vast amount of records the cemetery creates. Allison said it was also not unusual to receive three or four phone calls a days, not only from here, but from all over

North America, from people looking to trace ancestors. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The people we meet through here are very interesting, and some of them arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even alive,â&#x20AC;? said Black.

Allison said that burials have fluctuated drastically since his first year with the cemetery. The second year he was in charge, there were 115 burials with half of those taking place during winter months. Now, the cemetery averages 40 to 60 per year, with about 75 per cent of those being ashes.

Future plans for the cemetery include upkeep of the foundations. Learning about Dundas County cemeteries DUNDAS - While Maple Ridge Cemetery is going strong and not likely to be forgotten, local historian Alec Ball, VicePresident of the Chesterville and District Historical Society, reports

there could be over a dozen cemeteries in Dundas County forgotten and abandoned for various reasons.

Dundas cemeteries Continued from page 10 “These books are all available for purchase at the Heritage Centre in Chesterville. I donate my books to the Chesterville District Historical Society, who in turn, can sell them to help generate revenue for the Society,”said Ball.

“People can also order books directly from me, when the Heritage Centre is not open.”Ball said these books are also available at the Township Municipal office.

“If people inquire about them, or about local history, please direct them to me.

Always willing to help,”he said.

“Some of the older books were compiled by the old S.D. & G. Genealogy Society based in Cornwall back in the early 1990s. I took over some of these books and also created more of my own. I continue to update them on a regular basis. The original Maple Ridge Cemetery Book was created in 1993 by the S.D.&G group and has now more than doubled in size, exceeding 900 pages.

Reading through it is like taking a tour through North Dundas History, family by family,”said Ball.

Ball’s interest in cemeteries stemmed from looking up his own family tree when he got sidetracked creating and updating the books.

“Research and updating these books have consumed thousands of hours, starting of course with a walk through the cemetery. Once computerized, I use census record information, obituaries, local history books, funeral cards, cemetery burial records, family input, old newspapers, libraries, family bibles etc., and some internet info to add to the editor notes,” he said.

Ball attributes a great deal of the information he gathers from Lynne Cooke in Morrisburg.

“Her UEL resource Library is second to none for Dundas County history.

She also has a copy of most of Clarence Cross’s books.

Without her help I would never have tackled such big projects. I visit there each Wednesday to do research,”said Ball.

Ball then prints and binds his own books, includes a cover page and places a complete index of names at the back of the book. He sometimes uses Staples Copy Centre for the bigger books, and has now purchased a two-sided printer to help keep costs down.

Ball’s historical interests do not stop at cemeteries.

He is currently working on books about veterans and the wars that have been fought.

“I am now working on the Veterans of Dundas County. One book for WWI, another book for WWII, another book for all other wars including the Boer War to the Afghanistan War and a fourth book detailing all the Veteran Monuments in Dundas County, including King & Country plaques in our Churches and community centres, complimented by a colour picture of the church or community centre etc.,”he said. “once completed I will donate copies to the local Legions.”

Ball’s interest in genealogy started back in the ‘70s when he ran into cousin, Clarence Cross.

Balls’ roots come from the Pioneer Balls of Maple Ridge, who married into the Cross, Allison, Weegar and Bogat families. His father, Grant Ball, was born and raised on the Weegar Road family farm, just east of Elma. He then moved into Ottawa and worked with the Department of Agriculture for 32 years at the Experimental Farm.

Alec was raised in Ottawa and moved to Metcalfe in 1972. Meeting with Cross peaked his interest in local history.

Speaking of the abandoned cemeteries, Ball “estimates”that there are probably a couple of dozen in the area. Mainly old pioneer ones that were never documented and are probably lost to history

Slowey roast Continued from the front Club, laughed uproariously and applauded â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a trend that continued through the evening. â&#x20AC;&#x153;How many of you had Gabe as a family doctor?â&#x20AC;? inquired the emcee. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You poor buggers,â&#x20AC;? he exclaimed as a multitude of hands went up at the event. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a lot of choice, eh, I guess back then?â&#x20AC;? he observed with a smile, referring to the time period when the doctor and his wife, Mary, arrived in the area 41 years ago. emcee also The established that eight years had passed since Sloweyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s retirement, and that an official dinner marking the occasion had taken place at the same venue. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was all so sweet and fuzzy, wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t it?â&#x20AC;? said a grinning Harper, dripping with sarcasm at the â&#x20AC;&#x153;all kissy-face sort of thingâ&#x20AC;? characterizing the prior Slowey celebration. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was kind of like a lovein but without the marijuana.â&#x20AC;?

The tone was to be decidedly different this time around, he intimated, before drawing attention to Sloweyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s black-and-white

Mary Slowey, bravely seated beside her husband, also drew some of the emceeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attention and was lauded as the â&#x20AC;&#x153;gatekeeperâ&#x20AC;? of the former medical practice set up alongside the Slowey home four decades ago.

Harper recalled arriving for an 8 a.m. appointment back in the 1970s, only to be greeted with a gruff â&#x20AC;&#x153;Get out!â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; after walking through the door with a cup of coffee in hand, in violation of the Sloweysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; waiting-room rule. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And no gum either!â&#x20AC;? he said, imitating an additional command thrown his way on his way out to join a

line-up of banished coffee drinkers.

Somebody from the audience also chimed in about a prohibition against â&#x20AC;&#x153;wet swimsuitsâ&#x20AC;? at the practice. The emcee professed ignorance on that, claiming never to have sported a speedo into the Slowey office.

Harper also recounted an allegedly epic wait for a 2 p.m. appointment, only to get into the doctor â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s examination room â&#x20AC;&#x201D; he claimed â&#x20AC;&#x201D; at 6:15 p.m. He and the doctor then got into a convoluted discussion about news and soccer before discussing his health. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And he says to me: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;You know whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the matter with you? Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re crazy!â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;What!â&#x20AC;&#x2122; I want a second opinion!â&#x20AC;?

To which Slowey shot back, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re ugly, too!â&#x20AC;? according to Harper.

The doctor â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s role as coroner also came under scrutiny, as the emcee quipped that Slowey â&#x20AC;&#x153;is very well paid to say three words â&#x20AC;Ś â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Yup, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dead.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

His other continuing task as a surgical assistant allows him â&#x20AC;&#x153;to keep a hand inâ&#x20AC;? the profession, Harper deadpanned.

Sloweyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s colleague, Dr. Gerry Rosenquist, extolled him for his musicianship as well as his competence as a coroner who had no qualms about refusing a poorly investigated death report from the OPP. More humorously, Rosenquist held the audience spellbound with the account of an amazing boy born with no torso or

limbs, who suddenly sprouted the necessary appendages at the age of 18, after his first few drinks in an Irish bar allegedly frequented by Slowey. But alas, the newly mobile young man was struck and killed by a bus outside the establishment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He shouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve quit while he was a head,â&#x20AC;?

Slowey commented at the scene, at least according to the droll Rosenquist.

Dr. Wayne Domanko also took the podium to deliver a comedy routine revolving around his retired colleague, eliciting some of the biggest laughs from the subject himself.

Glenna MacIntosh of Chesterville, a 41-year patient of Sloweyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, credited the doctor with saving her life in 1996. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And he was there for me in my darkest hour in 2006,â&#x20AC;? she added.

MacIntosh also found a little gallows humour in the heart attack that preceded his retirement. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He used to say that if you ran a marathon, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d never have a heart attack. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He ran a marathon.

Howâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d that work out for you?â&#x20AC;? she said, smiling back at Slowey. She also relayed his logical advice that â&#x20AC;&#x153;the handles of your recliner do not qualify as an exercise machine.â&#x20AC;?

Shane Kavanagh of Ingleside, a patient of 20 years, amusingly remembered Sloweyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first question to him: Do you know how to read?

Kavanagh made the mistake of walking into the medical office without heeding the sign to remove your boots. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The man treats patients with the hands of an angel, and plays golf with the hands of a lumberjack,â&#x20AC;? he remarked. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Because of him our world is a better place.â&#x20AC;?

Dramatically removing his dinner jacket in a sign of serious intent, Slowey took the microphone with Harper at his side on guitar.

He delivered a song about the events of that evening, and then another, saltier number, The Farmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dog, written by Claire Algire of Williamsburg, especially well received by the audience. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It went well,â&#x20AC;? Slowey said, as the crowd milled about the Legion hall at the conclusion of the program. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing like a Chesterville party on a Saturday night. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a tradition for all these years.â&#x20AC;?

Chesterville Lion John Edgerton, who came up with the roast idea, said he was very pleased with the eventâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success.

Fall at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum brings history alive

Walk for PKD in Ingleside INGLESIDE - Joining 60 cities worldwide, Ingleside is hosting a Walk for Polycystic Kidney Disease on Sept. 23. This is the first time the walk is being held in Ingleside. Previous walks were held in Vankleek Hill.

The walk is designed to increase awareness of PKD and to raise money for research for this non-curable kidney disease. There are over 66,000 people in Canada that are affected by this disease. The Ingleside walk will also feature an auction, which starts at 10 a.m. Registration for the walk begins at 1 p.m. and the walk starts at 2 p.m. The event will be hosted at the Ingleside Masonic Hall at 11 Memorial Square in Ingleside.

Local businesses also provide many other services needed at the hospital. For example, Casselman Cartage in Finch expertly handled the clearing of snow and ice over the past two winters. DUNVEGAN - Once again organizers at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum are planning two exciting and popular weekend events this Fall: the 13th annual Harvest Fall Festival on Sunday, September 16, followed by a weekend-long War of 1812 Reenactment, Saturday and Sunday, September 22/23.

Leave behind the every day conveniences and step back in time on September 16th at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum from 11 am â&#x20AC;&#x201C;4 pm. Discover how Glengarryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s early settlers lived and worked. Explore how your ancestors made butter, ice cream, guitars, harnesses and saddles, how they shoed horses, harvested grain, sheared sheep, how they quilted, hooked rugs, spun thread and weaved it, even how hair was styled and curled. You will be captivated by at least 40 artisans demonstrating these techniques and many more.

It may get a little noisy in the afternoon during this year â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s featured rooster crowing contest.

As in the past, visitors will be able to witness one of the largest horse-drawn wagon and carriage parades in Eastern Ontario led by the Quigley Pipe Band at 1:30 p.m.

Visitors with a flair for pioneer fashion are invited

to come dressed in period attire and compete for prizes as best dressed and/or most unique costume. If you bring your prized zucchini, you can also compete for the biggest, best decorated or most unique zucchini. There will be music by several local groups and a full range of childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pioneer activities, including a petting zoo throughout the day.

Barb Newman, the organizer of the Harvest Sale Tent at the Festival is putting out a special call for donations of preserves, local produce, baked goods, and plants. Barb can be contacted at 613-527-1944 or donations can be dropped off at the Pioneer Museum (613-527-5230).

For the second weekend, September 22 and 23, the Glengarry Light Infantry Fencibles will return with several other regiments to the Pioneer Museum, some of them accompanied by their families. On both Saturday and Sunday visitors will be treated to a full-scale battle between the â&#x20AC;&#x153;British and Americansâ&#x20AC;?at 3:00 p.m., a military fashion show at 1:00 p.m., continuous regimental drilling, special childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1812 activities, music, and a noon-day cannon.

Reenactors and their families will be bivouacked on site in traditional tents.

Both weekends of this year â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s festival and reenactment are cosponsored by a grant from Heritageâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Canadian Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage Program. The Scotiabank of St.Isidore, the Glengarry Farmers Mutual Insurance Company and several other local institutions are cosponsors of the Harvest Fall Festival.

There is no admission charge for the first weekend, but a suggested donation of $5.00 is appreciated. The War of 1812 Reenactment on the 22/23 will run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day, with battles scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Admission to the Reenactment is $5.00 for adults, children under 12 free.

The Glengarry Pioneer Museum is located in Dunvegan, Ontario on County Road 24 (Dunvegan Road) at the crossroad with County Road 30 (Greenfield Road). Parking is available in the Presbyterian Church parking lot.

Terry Fox Run marks 30th year in North Dundas Darren Matte and Lois Ann Baker Record Sports CHESTERVILLE— This year marks a special milestone for the Terry Fox Run, Sept. 16, in North Dundas as it will be the 30th year the event has been held to raise money for cancer research. The run, organized locally by the Chesterville Rotary Club, is hoping for another great year in 2012.

Last year the event saw roughly 65 people take part and organizers are hoping to equal or improve on that number this year. Organizers hope that the event can indeed get back to the turnout that it was 30 years ago when 169 people showed up for the inaugural North Dundas Terry Fox Run. The event raises approximately $5,000-$6,000 each year and in the 19-year history has raised close to $195,000. Last year’s event brought in $5,456.

The event will follow along the same 5km route as in past years, beginning at North Dundas District High School at 9 a.m. Participants can walk, run, roller blade or

bike the course.

This is the 32nd year of the Terry Fox Run in Canada.

Last year, across Canada, 225 communities participated in the event and raised $12 million for cancer research. The event prides itself on no entry fee and no minimum pledge so that it is open to everyone and all donations.

Local on Terry’s Team Since 2010, the Foundation welcomes all cancer survivors to sign up as Terry’s Team Members, either via the Provincial Office or when registering online to fundraise. Terry’s Team Members are the living embodiment of progress; they are symbols of hope and a reminder of the legacy Terry left behind.

This year, Winchester’s Nancy Horton has been asked to be part of Terry’s Team.

Horton was diagnosed in 2005 with an aggressive type of breast cancer and the prognosis was not good.

“Initially I was given a 75 per cent chance of survival,”

said Horton, But upon further diagnosis, the doctors felt her statistic rate was so low, they would not even give her one.

However, with a new drug therapy, Herception®, she was able to beat it and can call herself a cancer survivor.

“Cancer research is very important especially when you’ve been through it and you see how much money it costs,” said Horton. “When they give you all the statistics and all the ins and outs it can be very frightening. It’s very comforting to know people would go beyond themselves to raise money to help other people.”

Horton has written two books on the subject Hope in the Midst of Darkness and The Big, Fat, Bald Head. The latter is aimed at children as a tool for parents to teach their children about cancer. It was illustrated by her 11-year-old son Carter, who served as her inspiration. Solid results for area Paralympians LONDON— The 2012 Paralympic games have wrapped up from London and local athletes are bringing home solid finishes. The big winner was Embrun’s Patrice Dagenais who was part of Canada’s Wheelchair Rugby team that captured silver and Russell’s Brianna Jennett-McNeill had strong finishes in the pool. Local coaches and their teams also represented Canada well. Embrun’s Jeff Dunbrack, rowing, was pleased to see one team win the ‘B’ final, see story right. And while his team did not directly medal, Winchester’s Hugh Conlin, Lead Coach for Ambulatory Athletics, he was still part of Canada’s Athletics team that captured nine medals in total.

At the end of the Games, Canada came away with 31 medals overall, 13th in the standings, seven of which were gold, placing them 20th in that category.

The road to the silver medal for Dagenais, and the wheelchair rugby team, began on Sept. 5 with a loss to Australia 64-52. Dagenais scored a pair of goals in the game for Canada.

The Canadians rebounded in their second contest with a 58-50 victory over Belgium. Dagenais added another goal in this victory. Canada completed the group stage of the tournament with a narrow 53-52 win, Dagenais with another goal, over Sweden earning them a berth in the semi-finals against the U.S.A. The semi-final was another close victory as Canada edged the Americans 50-49. The win set up a rematch with the Australians for the gold medal. However, it would be the same result from the group stage as Australia won the game and the gold medal by a score of 66-51. Dagenais did pick up a goal in the

gold medal game.

Brianna JennettMcNeill began her Paralympic Games on Aug. 31 with the 50-metre freestyle. She finished fourth in her heat with a time of 30.24 and was ninth overall. She missed the final, narrowly, by .13 of a second. Next up was the 100-metre butterfly where she finished fifth in her heat with a time of 1:20:53. She was also fifth in her heat of the 400-metre freestyle with a time of 5:01:94, again narrowly missing the final by 2.5 seconds this time, and she finished her games with a fifth place finish in her 100-metre freestyle heat at a time of 1:05:09.

Canadian athletes will now begin to prepare for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Winter athletes are now set to take centre stage in Sochi, Russia for the 2014 Winter Games.

“It’s important to give back in whatever capacity a person can, whether great or small. Every bit makes a difference. Everyone is touched by cancer one way or another.

You just never know when it could be you or someone you love. You shouldn’t live in fear, but do your best to live a healthy lifestyle including faith because there is a higher power beyond our self,” said Horton.

While this is the first year Horton has been involved in the Terry Fox Run, she has lent her name to many other fundraisers and spoken at many events. She has been involved with Relay for Life and the Winchester District Memorial Hospital Healers.

Local Paralympic coach wraps up his games Darren Matte Record Sports — The LONDON Paralympic games are in full swing in London, but for one local coach his games have already wrapped up.

Jeff Dunbrack, who resides in Embrun, is the head coach of Canada’s Paralympic rowing team, whose competition finished on Sept.

2. While the team did not have the results they were hoping for, Dunbrack sees it as a learning experience as the team moves forward. “It was a great competition for our athletes to compete in. Great Britain is a really good rowing nation and for our rowers to compete in front of large crowds that make a lot of noise, that was special.

Overall, we did ok. Canada needs to step it up if we want to stick with everyone else and be a leading nation in the sport. We didn’t get slower from previous competitions, everyone else just got faster.”

Canada’s Mixed Coxed Four team, of David Blair, Meghan Montgomery, Victoria Nolan, Anthony Theriault and Kriten Kit (cox), finished third in their heat and third in repechage. They were then placed in the ‘B’ final, which they won. “The other teams made changes and just flew ahead. It was nice to win the ‘B’ final and go out with a win, but you always want to win medals.”

ished sixth overall in the women’s single sculls.

This was not the first Games that Dunbrack had been a part of. Dunbrack came from a rowing past himself where as an individual he captured Ontario and Canadian University titles. He obtained a degree in Physical Education from Brock University and then began coaching with the St. Catharines Rowing Club. He moved up to Ottawa and looked to continue working in sports. At first, he got involved with the Canadian Adaptive Waterskiing team, then took a position with the Canadian Wheelchair Basketball team as the High Performance Coordinator. During that time, Dunbrack and the team went to Beijing and took silver at the 2008 Paralympic Games.

In late 2009, he returned to his sport of rowing, becoming the Head Coach of the Canadian Paralympic rowing team.

“It is always nice to work in the sport you know the most. I have a good relationship with Rowing Canada and have had our Paralympians train and do workshops with our Olympians.”

When Dunbrack came into the program he changed the culture. The change seemed to work as in 2010, he oversaw the first gold medal for Canada at the World Championships in New Zealand. “It was a lot of work, but it was very

rewarding. It meant a lot to me because it was my sport and my program.”

Dunbrack’s team went on to capture silver at the 2011 World Championships in Slovenia.

Leading up to the London Games, Dunbrack was excited because he finally got the chance to participate in the sport he was so passionate about.

He had the team compete at the World Cup in June, before training for July and early August in southern Ontario. Then, he shook things up as he brought the team for a training camp in Portugal. The team trained with the Irish Paralympic Rowing team in preparations for London.

Overall, Dunbrack says that the experience of the games was a good one, even though his team failed to medal. Dunbrack will get the opportunity to be part of future Paralympic Games as he is moving from his position with the rowing team to become the Canadian Paralympic Committee’s High Performance Coordinator. “I am very excited as I will be able to be part of both the Socchi and Rio Games. I love working with Paralympics Canada, it really is rewarding and I just like to see people win.”

With Dunbrack’s new position, he should get the opportunity to see Canadian Paralympians win multiple meadals at both future Games.

Morrisburg Lions look for better results in 2012-13 Darren Matte Record Sports MORRISBURG— After a disappointing finish to the season the 2011-12 Morrisburg Lions have a new man behind the bench and a new attitude moving forward. Just over a month ago, Dan Frawley was named coach of the Lions.

Frawley had an impressive personal career that included a five-year NHL career with the Chicago Blackhawks and, more notably, the Pittsburgh Penguins where he was the captain of the team during the 1987 season.

Frawley also captured the Calder Cup with the American Hockey League’s Rochester Americans in 1995.

“I had been talking with (General Manager) Kevin Casselman, and when he asked if I’d like to coach the team I said sure.”

After his playing days Frawley spent time helping native communities in Northern Quebec establish hockey programs of their own. The connections he made there are something that he hopes to use to his advantage and bring to the team. “I want to use my ability to coordinate with players up there who want to play at the next level here. We

already have two guys from up north and could have a couple more.”

Frawley says he still plans to be involved in the northern communities but not to an extent that could affect the Lions.

In addition to his work up north, Frawley has also coached AAA and high school hockey in Rochester, but he says that his coaching style has been mellowed since his most recent coaching experience. “I have learned patience and am not as quick to get angry. I have also learned how to effectively communicate with the players and make sure they understand the message.”

Already the Lions have noticed more interest in the team, getting calls from players they did not expect to hear from. “We are still getting the word out,” said Frawley. “We still need to win on the ice and keep improving, which should lead to more players knocking on our door. “ The Lions were happy with their initial turnout at training camp, which opened on Aug. 25. Frawley says that more than 40 players have come through camp and he has been excited by what he has seen.

Frawley admits that he

does not know much about the team that finished fifth in the St. Lawrence Division last season with just 13 wins and just 27 points. Still, he remains focused on looking forward and not on the past.

“For this season I think we want what every team wants: for our best players to be high-end players. I am happy with our goaltending, depth and that we have five or six local kids who will be a big part moving forward.”

The team expects about 11 returning players including both goalies from last season, three defensemen and six forwards.

In goal, the Lions will be turning again to Mikael Dion, who has been the starter for the last two seasons. “Dion is a really solid goalie, we will again rely on him to lead from the backend,” said Frawley.

On defense, Frawley is excited to have a player they just acquired from Westport.

The Lions recently brought in Curtis Pilon who appeared in 39 games for Westport registering five goals and seven assists. “We hope that he can stabilize our blue line that is made up of a lot of young defensemen.”

As for the type of team Frawley hopes to have on the ice, he says he wants to be strong defensively, control the puck and dictate the play.

His goal for the season is playoffs as a minimum, but hopes that his group will continue to grow and improve as the year goes on.

The Lions will look to implement those ideas when they open the season on Sept.

The Lions are also in talks with junior ‘A’ teams for any late cuts, but Frawley says that nothing is imminent.

St. Lawrence division preseason wraps up The EOJHL season is just about underway as teams will officially open the season on Sept. 13 with the defending EOJHL champions, the Casselman Vikings, welcoming the Akwesasne Wolves. The next night the two local teams, the Winchester Hawks and Morrisburg Lions will kick off their campaigns. Winchester will open up at home to those same Vikings, who beat them in the St. Lawrence Division final last season, while Morrisburg will be on the road in Alexandria. The Lions and Hawks will clash on Sept. 16 for the Lions home opener.

Hawks Preseason The Winchester Hawks opened their preseason schedule on Sept. 3 in Winchester, with a 7-3 win over the Akwesasne Wolves. They then moved on to play a home-and-

home with Ottawa West, a series that coach Tom Kirkwood said â&#x20AC;&#x153;would be a real testâ&#x20AC;?. The first game was Sept. 6 in Ottawa West where the home side skated away with a 5-2 win. The return game, Sept. 7, in Winchester had a reversed outcome as the Hawks came back and lit the lamp nine times for the 9-5 win. The Hawks moved onto one more series to close out the preseason with Metcalfe, beginning on Sept. 9. The Hawks won the opener 4-3 at the Fred Barrett Arena in Leitrim, improving their preseason record to 3-1. The second game of the homeand-home went last night in Winchester.

Lions Preseason The Lions got an early start to their preseason opening up on Sept. 1 against Akwesasne at the Benson Centre in Cornwall.

Lions a 5-0 defeat. The next day, Sept. 2, the Lions hosted Rideau Division rival South Grenville back at the Benson Centre. The Lions looked sharp in this one as they were able to weather early pressure and came away with a 6-4 win. The Lions made it three games in three days on Sept. 3, still at the Benson Centre, with an offensive showcase against Char-Lan. The Lions came out on top of this wild one 10-9.

Prominent farm familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first auction sale since 1997 Nelson Zandbergen Record Staff EMBRUN â&#x20AC;&#x201D; The international dairy community will have its eyes on Embrun this month when one of the most prominent Holstein breeders in Canada hosts a live auction of more than 100 top-flight cattle for the first time in 15 years.

Recently in the headlines as the home of the greatest lifetime milk-producing cow on the planet, Ferme Gillette expects 1,000 visitors from around the globe to attend the Sept. 21 sale in person, with many others bidding online through Internet simulcast.

Dubbed Gillette Visions 2012, the auction block will feature 106 finest examples of the breed, including approximately 45 animals from other respected Holstein producers around the country.

The occasion will also double as an open house for Gillette, allowing the public a chance to gaze upon two of the operationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s celebrity bovines: the Guinness Book of World Record-holding â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Smurfâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; as well as the 2011 Canadian Cow of the Year, Gillette Blitz 2nd Wind.

The latter cow â&#x20AC;&#x153;is pretty much the star of the sale,â&#x20AC;? says a smiling Eric Patenaude, 30, a fifth-

generation member and partner of the Patenaude family farm whose corporate moniker â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gilletteâ&#x20AC;? derives from the merger of his and grandfather grandmotherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first names â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Gilles and Lorette. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the dam of many great bulls that have come out,â&#x20AC;? Patenaude says of 2nd Wind and her burgeoning line of elite male offspring leased to EastGen and GenerVations for semen production. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had much success over the past couple of years with the 2nd Wind family,â&#x20AC;? he remarks, seated in a barn office with walls covered in red show ribbons.

He notes such distinguished bulls as Gillette Windbrook, Winhammer, Stanley Cup, Willrock and Wild Thing yielded by their famous travelling mother, recently returned to Ontario from â&#x20AC;&#x153;doing some IVF [In Vitro Fertilization] work in the States.â&#x20AC;?

Of course, neither 10year-old 2nd Wind nor 16year-old Smurf â&#x20AC;&#x201D; full name Gillette Emperor Smurf â&#x20AC;&#x201D; will go under the gavel of auctioneer Pierre Boulet on the 21st.

These accomplished Gillette cows are only for the looking â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and the marvelling.

(Patenaude even suggests the more elderly Smurf â&#x20AC;&#x201D;

whose image now adorns the sign outside the 120-head tie-stall barn housing the best of Gilletteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 600 milking cows â&#x20AC;&#x201D; is destined to be buried in a prominent spot on the farm one day.

This month, he adds, her record production of sevenplus tanker truckloadsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; worth of milk will be officially published in Guinnessâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2013 edition.)

The last Gillette Visions event in 1997 auctioned 168 animals and grossed over $1.3-million. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do it that often because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of work.

But this one has come together really well, so maybe in the future we can do it more often,â&#x20AC;? he says, raising the possibility of reprising the sale every five years or so going forward.

Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve brought in sale co-managers to assist the 2012 edition, with Mark Smith and Yvon Chabot jointly managing in cooperation with Louis Patenaude, another Ferme Gillette partner.

The sale will also offer two â&#x20AC;&#x153;first choiceâ&#x20AC;? calves that have yet to be born â&#x20AC;&#x201D; an increasingly popular sale technique, according to Eric Patenaude. In one lot, bidders will vie for first pick of four current pregnancies, while the other lot represents first pick out of eight calves now in utero.
