Level 2 drought
FINCH — Even with the amount of rain recently, it hasn’t been enough to roll back the official drought level a notch. On Sept. 10, South Nation Conservation issued a release stating the Level 2 designation, imposed July 16, remains in place after a review of precipitation and river flow. The Water Response Team found that threemonth rainfall indicators correspond to a Level 1, while streamflow indicators suggest a Level 3 low-water condition. That adds up to a continuation of Level 2 status, with watershed residents still asked to voluntarily cut their consumption by 20 per cent. The fall should see normal precipitation over the next three months, but higher than seasonal temperatures are expected to affect water levels throughout the watershed.
Free SNC bus tour
FINCH — South Nation Conservation invites the public to enjoy its ninth annual Watershed Bus Tour on Tues., Sept. 25, rain or shine. The free bus leaves SNC offices on Victoria Street in Finch at 8 a.m. and returns at 4 p.m. A bag lunch will be provided on the free tour. To reserve a seat, call Ronda Boutz at 1-877-984-2948 or 613-984-2948 ext 251, or via email at rboutz@nation.on.ca.

Heel ’n Wheel rolls out $70K Nelson Zandbergen Record Staff WINCHESTER — The first annual Heel ‘n Wheel drew nearly 100 participants who raised a total of just over $70,000 by walking and cycling toward Winchester, where cancer care services at the local hospital were the focus of the effort. “It’s amazing for a first year event. What else can you say? remarked Winchester District Memorial Hospital Foundation Chair Arnold Scheerder, who described the outcome as “far beyond expectation. “Next year’s going to be even better, I’m sure. Schreeder also extolled the 14 children who took part in the event. Despite sudden downpours and heavy gusts of wind in the afternoon, the intrepid cyclists and walkers left from marshalling points in Finch, Osgoode, Russell and South Mountain. The event was inspired by last year’s folding of Ottawa’s annual Weekend to End Women’s Cancer — now defunct — leaving stalwart local members of the Winchester Hospital Heelers team in need of a new fundraising activity. All told, 12 teams took part in the locally based replacement event

Doc weathers roast Nelson Zandbergen Record Staff CHESTERVILLE — The jokes, jabs and accolades rained down on Dr. Gabriel Slowey at the Chesterville Legion on Saturday night, as friends and colleagues of the retired physician roasted the good-humoured victim
without inflicting major trauma. On stage at the head table, the dapper doctor wore a tuxedo and maintained a beaming smile while taking it on that movie-star chin — his James Bond-esque visage highlighted by emcee and fellow “Wild Rovers bandmate Bernie Harper.
