Candidates make Ingleside impression Carolyn Thompson Goddard Record Contributor INGLESIDE â&#x20AC;&#x201D; The Lancer Centre at RO School in Ingleside was full to capacity as more than 225 people spent just under two hours listening to the candidates for school board trustee and municipal council at the â&#x20AC;&#x153;South Stormont Meet the Candidates Nightâ&#x20AC;?.

Nine of the 10 candidates for South Stormont Council were present, with each having three minutes to present some biographical information as well as their campaign platform. Issues discussed included the infrastructure, fiscal responsibility, improving service to residents and the need for council to work together as a team as they move together to the future.

Incumbent Councillor Richard Waldroff is proud of the work done by this council, particularly in the field of asset management and feels that the township needs to be prepared for the financial challenges ahead in view of the probable reduction in funding from the upper levels of government.

This need for financial responsibility was coupled with the requirement for improved infrastructure (roads, ditches, sidewalks) by many candidates as well as improved communication between residents and council.

Earle Depass of St. Andrewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s West suggested that if elected he would provide a conduit to the township as well as ensuring that tax dollars were used appropriately.

Like Depass, Mike Proulx would like to see peace on council, something that candidate Jason Swerdfeger agreed with and asked those present to vote for change, for â&#x20AC;&#x153;the future starts now.â&#x20AC;?

Candidates for mayor and deputy mayor were each given three minutes to introduce themselves during which time issues such as the need for improving the m u n i c i p a l i t y â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s infrastructure, transparency and council cohesiveness were discussed. Following this was a question and answer period for the candidates aspiring to these two municipal offices.

Candidates for deputy mayor were asked questions that were formulated by the mayoralty candidates and vice versa.

Questions for the deputy mayor candidates ranged from potential growth in the township, concern over current expenditures and council solidarity. All three candidates seemed to agree that there was a need to support a decision that had been made by council, but Woods and Hart both agreed there was a need for transparency and

accountability with the public.

With respect to current expenditures Beauregard seemed to have no concerns over current expenditures while Hart expressed the need to keep a watch on borrowing. When asked about potential growth Beauregard noted that the township needs to be inviting to developers and businesses, a sentiment echoed by Woods and Hart expressing that better communication needs to be developed between council and the people.

A question regarding how the candidate would ensure the financial sustainability of the municipality had candidate Jim Bancroft citing his business experience, working with municipal staff and ensuring adequate reserves while incumbent Bryan McGillis spoke on the need to work with staff to develop programs such as the Community Improvement Plan and the large amount of municipal land in the township.

Carolyn Thompson Goddard Record Contributor MORRISBURG — The Upper Canada Playhouse in Morrisburg was almost full for the first of three South Dundas municipal council all-candidates meeting held on Sept. 30. It was a long meeting with nine candidates vying for three positions on council, three for the office of deputy mayor and two candidates for mayor.

The candidates for the position of councillor were the first to speak with the majority of them agreeing that there was a need to attract new light industry, promote the municipality and ensure staffing is adequate for municipal needs. Councillor hopefuls also discussed municipal recreation requirements with Robert Gillard suggesting new ideas should be brought forward and dismissing the need for additional trails being developed, but rather develop ways in which to get people to use the ones that are currently available.

Both Jim Graham and Archie Mellan commented on the work of the municipal recreation director with Mellan mentioning that he would like to see more community involvement in developing programming.

Phillip Blancher suggested that there was a need for financially responsible waterfront development as a way to increase the numbers of tourists visiting South Dundas while Marc St. Pierre mused about investigating how to increase recreational boat use of municipal docks.

Infrastructure was another “hot” topic in the councillor debate. While Mellan expressed concern about the road conditions in the towns and villages, he mentioned that road maintenance had been hindered by sewer and water line repair. Blancher suggested that there was a need to go back to basics in the infrastructure field and a need for more sidewalks in the municipality, while St. Pierre commented that there was a need to have an infrastructure improvement

Bancroft spoke on the bad condition of the roads and the need to find money from the senior levels of government for infrastructure maintenance.

With voting set to occur between Oct. 22 and Oct. 27 by phone and internet (as well as a paper ballot option available in South Storrmont) many candidates expressed the sentiment that residents should exercise their democratic right and vote for the candidate of their choice.

In response to a question on how to get people involved in politics, suggestions such as the scheduling of council meetings, on-line streaming of meetings, educating the public and reaching out to young people were put forth.

After a brief intermission the candidates for Deputy Mayor and Mayor were introduced with the three Deputy Mayor candidates providing their opening statements first. Incumbent candidate Jim Locke expressed concern about road maintenance while suggesting that South Dundas is the envy of many municipalities and is proud of the achievements of the 2010-2014 council. Del Jones, a teacher and professional accountant, feels that he has the experience and skills necessary to perform the duties of deputy mayor and is seeking election to this office in hopes of improving communication between council and its electorate. Karl MatthewsMacIntyre, President of the Chamber of Commerce in South Dundas, sees as his goal to work with residents towards an even better municipality.

The mayoralty candidates then provided those in attendance with their opening statements with Steven Byvelds expressing pride in his record and achievements during this term of office, stating that steady leadership is needed.

Candidate Delegarde mentioned that upgrading the infrastructure in South Dundas should be a priority for the next council.

There was some discussion concerning the relationship that exists between the Chamber of Commerce and the municipality with Matthews-MacIntyre feeling that the two aren’t working together well.

Byvelds responded by saying that while he respects the work that the Chamber does, there are

limitations on council imposed by the Municipal Act in Ontario with Delegrade mentioning that council has to be open to all business groups in the municipality.

A question from the audience regarding the lack of recreational services, had Byvelds speaking of the need for community input into a master recreational plan and the high cost of arenas, while Jones felt that before recreational facilities can be built municipal finances must be in order.

Jim Locke suggested that the main challenge facing the municipality in the development of recreational facilities is the low population density while Delegrade mentioned that the feasibility of a multipurpose sports facility for people of all ages is being looked into. Recreational development of the waterfront, long-term planning, infrastructure and affordable housing were also up for discussion.

Municipal debt and concern about project cost overruns was raised with specific reference to the cost overrun in the conversation of the “old” Morrisburg High School into the South Dundas Municipal Office with Byvelds acknowledging that there is a need to “tighten up our belts”, but insisted that the municipality is in good financial shape as it moves forward.

One of the final questions of the evening had to do with the structure of council meetings itself. It was suggested that open question period at council meetings could increase community input. Responses ranged from the mayoralty candidates suggesting that this was something that could be looked into, to deputy mayor candidates Jones and MatthewsMcIntyre supporting this idea and Locke seeing this as a possible way that the lines of communication could be improved.

There are two remaining all-candidates meetings in South Dundas, Oct. 14 at the Matilda Hall and Oct. 20 at the Iroquois Civic Centre both beginning at 6 p.m.

Editorial Growing pains Facing a Winchester crowd unhappy about a proposed 132-unit subdivision in their neighbourhood, North Dundas Council grappled with the challenges of growth on Sept. 16.

To be sure, council had its hands full with complaints and concerns of the NIMBY (‘Not In My Backyard’) variety to one degree or another. (Not to dismiss that impulse as always wrong: Folks should expect to have their voices heard about matters that affect them where they live.) But NIMBY-ism wasn’t the only takeaway message for council in the public reaction to Woods Construction’s proposed development. Also evident was the stark reminder that growth can spur taxpayer demand for further municipal investment in services and infrastructure.

North Dundas Council prefers to promote the idea that township growth is always funded entirely by developers who, within the confines of their new subdivisions, put up hefty fees, deposits and securities to pave roads, connect houses to water and sewer pipes, and fund playgrounds. But the pressures of growth can’t always be so neatly contained — all tied up with a nice blue ribbon and fancy bow — inside the borders of the latest swath of vinyl-sided suburbia to spring up in North Dundas. When truly substantial growth arrives in a municipality, that jurisdiction will face pressure to draw upon existing taxpayer coffers to help accommodate it.

Glimmers of that were seen in Winchester. At the meeting in question, council heard a call for the township to immediately improve or widen the existing handful of residential roads pegged as the sole points of subdivision entry and exit during the hurly burly of construction (and afterward). Frankly, it doesn’t seem unreasonable that urban side streets should be brought up to the best possible, babysmooth condition if they must bear the brunt of activity associated with the largest housing project ever witnessed in the village. But because those streets fall outside the scope of the proposed development, such an upgrade would be solely the township’s to make. The same goes for a related — and very understandable — suggestion that North Dundas acquire some neighbouring farmland to create a new road allowance and construct a new township road connecting the development to Main Street. The added alternative route might relieve some of the expected traffic hassles on the soon-tobe-burdened streets west of the project.

Both ideas received a rather tepid response from a council already facing any number of financial constraints. Mayor Eric Duncan offered he didn’t know of the last time the township might have established and built a totally new street from scratch, deftly steering the conversation away from such expensive talk. (Though he was somewhat more amenable to the idea of a new Main Street sidewalk extension leading to Tim Hortons.)

Of course, larger urban municipalities in the full bloom of growth do widen arterial streets, add lanes, and even build new sidewalks and roads altogether, as the population rises in concert with more housing stock. They also invest in public transit, create additional arena ice surfaces, and spend on any number of new programs to meet growing demands from a larger populace.

Located just outside Ottawa, North Dundas was already seeing substantial housing development and subdivision growth before the Woods proposal came along. If trends continue, the clamour will only increase for corresponding growth and improvement in the township and counties-funded road networks, especially those closest to the expanding urban and suburban centres of North Dundas. Call it a new level of growing pains — the first pangs of which council has only started to feel.

Kudos to a mayor The Editor: l live in South Stormont, and l just called our Mayor Bryan McGillis to tell him what a fantastic job he and council have done. South Stormont Township has changed almost overnight since McGillis was elected mayor.

No bid for NestlĂŠ Township extends deadline CHESTERVILLE â&#x20AC;&#x201D; The empty NestlĂŠ factory here garnered no bids by the original Sept. 23 cutoff date set by the Township of North Dundas, which forced the property onto the market several weeks ago for delinquent property taxes.

With no offers in hand by the 3 p.m. deadline, council held an emergency session and decided to extend the submission period a further 90 days.

The township has not assumed ownership of the old plant but is using its Municipal Act authority to compel a sale for the recovery of unpaid taxes as well as associated legal fees related to the forced-sale process.

Minimum bid has been set at the townshipâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s outstanding combined bill â&#x20AC;&#x201D; $482,337.

Any proceeds from a sale would first pay off that bill.

Anything excess would go back to the current owner â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a

That entity purchased the shuttered factory â&#x20AC;&#x201D; technically a cluster of about 10 village properties at the time â&#x20AC;&#x201D; from NestlĂŠ in January 2007. Once the oldest North American plant in the NestlĂŠ fleet, the multinational ceased production at the plant here â&#x20AC;&#x201D; which made instant coffee, as well as chocolate syrup and powder products â&#x20AC;&#x201D; on June 22, 2006.

The current owner paid $500,000 for the property, several years after NestlĂŠ claimed to have invested tens of millions of dollars in upgrades.

The property also comes with substantial freshwater well resources.

It also included a large wastewater lagoon on the east end of the village, but the cur-

rent owner sold that to the township for $900,000 a few years ago, to increase the capacity of the villageâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sewage system.

Mayor Eric Duncan was reluctant to hazard a guess on councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next move if the property still yields no bids by the new deadline. In that event, council could choose to have the property â&#x20AC;&#x153;vestedâ&#x20AC;? in the township â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a municipal takeover of site ownership â&#x20AC;&#x201D; but that would leave taxpayers on the hook for future costs related to demolition and cleanup if it ever comes to that.

Duncan suggested there could be a bit of potential to yield back some offsetting revenue by severing off and selling the old plant managerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house, as well as the farm field out back, should the municipality fail to find a buyer and end up as owner.

Morewood United Church is no more as an institution, but the churchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s old bell has found a home on a concrete monument built this summer at Morewood United Cemetery. Antique buggy finds new life Carolyn Thompson Goddard Record Contributor BERWICK â&#x20AC;&#x201D; A chance attendance at an auction near Osgoode put a piece of Canadiana back on the road to its former glory. Stephen Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Donohue has spent the past two years restoring an early-1900â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Phaeton Carriage he picked up at that Ferguson family sale.

The purchase was inspired by buggy rides he had taken while visiting various cities, including Victoria, B.C. The Berwick-area resident and his brother Leonard worked on the restoration together, deciding that â&#x20AC;&#x153;if we do it, we are going to do it right.â&#x20AC;?

The restoration project involved travelling to Upper New York State and visiting an Amish community near Bombay.

Mary Ferguson, whose family had owned the buggy, she was amazed at its restored condition and provided a bit of the history behind the piece. She feels that it was probably purchased by her father-inlaw in the early 1900s, perhaps soon after his marriage and had remained in the family until the auction. For many years it sat in the barn, a victim of the move to the automobile as the choice of personal locomotion but had been ridden in the Kars Centennial Parade in 1967

as well as the 150th Kars Anniversary Parade in 1972.

According to Ferguson, her husband John loved horses and had registered Percherons showing them at local fairs for many years.

When asked about what the future holds for this piece of Canadian history, Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Donohue mentioned that it will hold a place of honour beside a family cutter at reunions, and its playing a role in the upcoming IPM 2015 being held nearby has not been ruled out.

Thailand delegation visits Homestead Organics Jeff Moore Record Staff MORRISBURG â&#x20AC;&#x201D; A delegation of nine officials from the Thailand Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives were in Morrisburg on Tues., Sept. 30, at Homestead Organics on Allison Dr. The delegation arrived around 1:30 p.m. after they toured Homestead Organicsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; other facility in Berwick, Ont. The group arrived in Canada on Sept. 28, and toured McGill University in Montreal. They were planning on going to Kingston, following the Homestead Organicsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; tour, to take in the Thousand Islands, before heading to Niagara Falls on Oct. 2, and finishing their four-day whirlwind tour.

The group were treated to some local Thai cuisine at the Morrisburg location by owner Tom Manley and welcomed to the region by South Dundas Mayor Steven Byvelds. After the luncheon, the Thai guests toured the new location of Homestead Organics, which supports organic farmers in the implementation of sustainable production methods and to respond to the constant growth in the consumer demand for organic food.

The company moved from its former location in Berwick at a cost of around $1-million earlier this year but still operates in Berwick until they have enough capital to relocate their whole operation. The operation at the Morrisburg facility is a seed-cleaning facility, which removes chaff, dirt and any other foreign substances in the grain.

to Manley when they asked to include him in their four-day tour. He hoped to share insight to its own success, as well as the challenges, practices and successes of the organic farmers that the company serves.

Manley said about the group, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very unusual for us to have visitors from so far away.â&#x20AC;? The company has had tours of his facilities before, such as school and Canadian farmers but never a contingent from a foreign country.

When the group was shown some cleaned wheat they said it looked so much like rice but a little heavier.

Although they found the weather a little chilly here in Canada despite the temperature being 21 C on Tues., the group had a memorable tour.

The theme for this contest was â&#x20AC;&#x153;defining the meaning of life, the universe and everything!â&#x20AC;?

In order to enter the film, it had to start at 7 p.m., July 25, completed by 7 p.m. on Sept. 5, and be ready for judging on Sun., Sept. 21, at the Mayfair Theatre in Ottawa. His entry, entitled Last Call is about a young woman dealing with alcoholism and attempting to get her life back on track.

College supporters called together for Harvest Fest KEMPTVILLE â&#x20AC;&#x201D; In the face of impending campus closure, the Kemptville College Foundation is going ahead with its biggest annual fundraiser, Harvest Fest, Oct. 25.

As usual, it will be held on campus at W.B. George Centre, possibly one of the last major events to be hosted by the college catering department.

Last March, the University of Guelph announced it will be pulling out of Kemptville by spring of next year. Since then, plans have been modified;

U of G will continue administering trades courses at Kemptville through 2016. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more important than ever to stage Harvest Fest,â&#x20AC;? said KCF Director Ian Carley, chief organizer of the fundraiser. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to show solidarity, that the agricultural community is solidly behind efforts to save the college.â&#x20AC;?

The hip-of-beef dinner, dance and silent and live auctions traditionally raises over $12,000. The money is used for scholarships and to help fund campus innovation and

improvements.

Lately, some KCF funds have been set aside to help support the Kemptville College Renewal Task Force and help cover cost of a development plan to be submitted by the end of October to provincial facilitator Lyle Vanclief.

KCF directors decided foundation money couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be better spent than in trying to save the college.

Charges in Cadillac plunge case Break-in MORRISBURG â&#x20AC;&#x201D; SD&G OPP have charged a 21-year-old male driver involved in a single motor vehicle collision which occurred on Sept. 10, at approximately 10:50 p.m. on Lakeshore Drive.

Investigation indicated a 2005 Cadillac had travelled on Lakeshore Drive, went out of control and collided with a guardrail and a private dock.

The vehicle then became submerged in the St-Lawrence River. Upon police arrival, the driver was not at the scene but was later identified on Sept.11.

Rockets win in a shootout Jeff Moore Record Staff CHESTERVILLE— The North Dundas Rockets went into their home game on Sat., Oct. 4, against the Papineauville Vikings coming off a big 5-3 win on the road against the Rockland Nationals in their previous outing and looked to knock off the Vikings.

The Rockets got off to a good start as they took a 2-1 lead into the second period and kept it close until the halfway mark as the Vikings struck for three second-period goals and the Rockets fell short losing 7-4.

The Rockets then travelled to St. Isidore to take on the Eagles on Sun., Oct. 5, looking to get back in the winning column and extend their road-winning streak to two.

The Rockets led after the first period 1-0 but trailed after the second 4-2 but they evened the score late in the third to force overtime.

Overtime proved nothing so the game headed to a shootout where Pete KleinSwormink put the game on ice as the Rockets picked up their second consecutive road win.

Rockets 5 Eagles 4 (SO) ST. ISIDORE— The North Dundas Rockets travelled to St. Isidore to take on the Eagles on Sun., Oct.

5, in the NCJHL. After suffering a loss in a penaltyfilled game the previous night, the Rockets looked for their second consecutive win on the road.

The Eagles’ record going into the game was (3-2-0) and they were looking for a share of first place with three other teams. The Rockets got on the scoreboard first at the 9:47 mark of the first period when Ryan Byers fired one home from Nicholas Wysman and Brent Simms.

The 1-0 score held up as the two teams headed for the second period. In the second, the Eagles scored just 38 seconds in to tie the game at one. The Eagles took their first lead of the game at 10:19 and added another goal at 11:54.

The Rockets cut the deficit to one when Liam Morrow slammed one home from Kyle Adams and Will Fawcett at 17:03. The Eagles took the 3-2 lead into the second intermission.

In the third period, the Eagles added to their lead at 6:53 but the Rockets came back with a goal by Wysman at 7:01 from Morrow to make it a 4-3 game. The Rockets tied the game with 2:16 remaining in regulation on a goal by Pete Klein-Swormink from

Adams and Morrow to force an overtime period.

After playing a four-onfour, five-minute overtime period nothing was decided so the game headed to a shootout. Klein-Swormink scored for the Rockets in the shootout to become the hero. The Rockets’ goalie James Hanley picked up the win.

Vikings 7 Rockets 4 CHESTERVILLE—The North Dundas Rockets welcomed the Papineauville Vikings to the Chesterville Arena on Sat., Oct. 4, in the NCJHL. The Rockets were looking for their first home win of the season while the Vikings sat just two points up on the Rockets in a log jam in the middle of the pack in the NCJHL standings.

The Vikings drew first blood as they scored at 4:28 of the first period but the Rockets answered quickly on a goal by Kyle MacDonald at 7:24 from Will Fawcett to tie the game at one.

The Rockets took the lead at 14:03 when Dustin Tinkler scored on a power play from Pete KleinSwormink and Nick Wysman. The Rockets took the 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

The Vikings retook the lead at 16:14 and took it into the final period. The Vikings scored again just 1:39 into the period on a power play to take a twogoal lead. Then at 6:36 the Vikings got an insurance marker but the Rockets

closed the gap to two goals when Wysman picked up his third point of the game on a goal set up by Owen Salmon and Fawcett at 9:24.

The Vikings closed out the scoring at 15:57 and took the game 7-4. The Rockets’ goalie Thomas Lastewka suffered the loss.

There were 100 minutes in penalties between the two teams.

Next week The Rockets head to Gatineau to take on the Olympiques on Fri., Oct.

10, at the Robert Guertin Arena in Gatineau at 7:30 p.m. Then on Sat., Oct. 11, they will play host to the St. Isidore Eagles in Chesterville at 7:45 p.m.

Then on Sun. Oct., 12, the Rockets will be in Papineauville for a game against the Vikings at the Papineau Arena at 2:30 p.m.

The Rockets play their fourth game in six days as they travel to Vankleek Hill on Wed., Oct. 15, at the Vankleek Hill Arena at 8 p.m.

Panthers snuff Olympiques’ flame Jeff Moore Record Staff EMBRUN –The Embrun Panthers welcomed the Gatineau Olympiques to the Palais des Sports in Embrun on Fri., Oct. 3, in the NCJHL. The Panthers were coming off a 2-0-0 the past weekend knocking off the Rockland Nationals handily and a hard fought victory over the St. Isidore Eagles (2-4-0) and looked to knock off the Gatineau Olympiques (2-1-0).

The Olympiques and the Panthers were tied at four points in the NCJHL standings after the first two weeks so something had to give.

The Panthers outscored the Olympiques in the first 3-1 and 2-1 in the second period to take a 5-2 lead into the final period. The Panthers got two more before the Olympiques scored one late and took the game 7-3.

The Embrun Panthers played host to the Gatineau Olympiques on Fri., Oct. 3, in Embrun. The Panthers opened the scoring at 2:28 when Adam Fillion scored from Justin Raymond and Scott Fleming to take a 1-0 lead.

At 6:26, the Panthers took a two-goal lead of the stick of Ryan Kemp from Tyler Cayen and Fillion.

The Olympics scored a power play goal at 13:33 to cut the Panthers’ lead to one but the Panthers answered on a power play of their own when Daniel Cogan scored from Cody Lavictoire and Jesse Lavictoire at the 17:00 mark.

The Panthers took the 31 lead to the dressing room after the first. In the second period, the Panthers struck again at 5:12 as Zach Gillam put one home from Chad Robillard to take a 4-1 lead.

RHS senior girls take a double digit win

The Russell High School T-Wolves Girl’s senior basketball team took on the St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School Falcons at Russell High School on Wed., Oct. 1. The T-Wolves poured on the offence and took it to the Falcons as they went on to a 44-33 win. The top scorers for the T-Wolves were Beth Hayton with 18 points and Brooke Morningstar with eight. The game, a further meaning, as the T-Wolves’ Coach Kimberly MacKinnon coached against her husband, David MacKinnon, who coached the Falcons in a little family feud for a day. Brooke Morningstar (21) tries to extract the ball from the Falcons forward as she gets a little help from Beth Hayton (23).

Hawks prey on Lions Jeff Moore Record Staff WINCHESTER – The Winchester Hawks welcomed the Morrisburg Lions to the Joel Steele Community Centre on Fri., Oct. 3, in the EOJHL St. Lawrence Division. The Hawks were looking to take over the league’s top spot as they went into the game, as the Lions were searching for their second consecutive win after beating the Char-Lan Rebels in their previous outing.

The Hawks scored two five-on-five goals and added a short-handed goal in the first period. The Lions got one to go to keep it close but in the second period the Hawks went on a scoring spree as they fired five goals to the back of the Lions’ cage.

In the third period, both teams scored a single marker and the Hawks took the win in a penalty-filled game.

Hawks 8 Lions 2 The Lions were the visitors for the Winchester Hawks on Fri., Oct. 3, at the Joel Steele Community Centre in Winchester in the St. Lawrence Division of the EOJHL. The Hawks were looking to slingshot past the idle Casselman Vikings for first place in the division.

After an impressive 4-2 win over the Char-Lan Rebels on Sun., Sept. 28, the Hawks got on the board first on a goal by Tom Fingler as he beat the Lions’ starting goalie John Gilmer at 5:44 from Luke Scott and Kyle Richardson.

The Lions went on the power play when the Hawks’ Steve Savage took a hooking penalty but the Hawks’ Austin Rothe got sprung on a short-handed breakaway and he made no mistake as he went low glove side at 14:21.

another power play from Justin Lefebvre and Jordan Smail at 16:07. The Hawks answered right back as Alex Sifton scored just 29 seconds later from Simon Corriveau and Eric Starcevic to make it 3-1.

The Hawks took the lead into the first intermission and, in the second period, Tommy Abrams added to the lead as he scored a power play goal from Richardson and Scott at 2:09. Sifton picked up his second of the game at 8:33 when he finished a play started by Corriveau to make it 5-1.

The Hawks added to the lead at 17:31 as Tim Conlin scored on the power play from Franco Gagnon and Starcevic. Before the period drew to a close, the Hawks put up another marker with 1:59 remaining in the period, as Rothe picked up his second of the game from Patrick Morin and Bryden Van Kessel.

The Lions had no answer as the Hawks took a 7-1 lead into the third

period. In the third period, the Lions got one back when Zach Belaire put one past the Hawks’ goalie Brandon Lowry from Jordan St. Louis and Rutley at 3:46.

Van Kessel picked up his second point of the game as he streaked in from the point and put it past the Lions’ keeper at 7:42 from Josh Stubbings and Savage. The Hawks hung on for the 8-2 win in a game where there were 108 minutes in penalties between the two teams.

Lowry picked up the win in goal for the Hawks stopping 36 of 38 shots and the Lions’ Gilmer took the loss but was the busier of the two goalies stopping 37 of 45 shots.

Next week The Hawks welcome the Alexandria Glens to the Joel Steele Community Centre on Fri., Oct. 10, at 8:15 p.m. and then travel to the Benson Centre, in Cornwall, to take on the Akwesasne Wolves at 5:45 p.m.

The St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School Senior Ravens’ football team welcomed the South Dundas District School Giants on Fri., Oct. 3, for their third outing of the season. The Ravens went into the game 1-1 and were hoping to get past the Giants. The Giants came out on fire scoring a converted touchdown in the first quarter but the Ravens answered with a single as the Ravens’ kicker Josh Webb kicked the ball to the back of the end zone and the Giants couldn’t get the ball out making it a 7-1 game. In the second quarter the Ravens got into the red zone but couldn’t score the major so they settled for a field goal by Webb to make it 7-4.

There was no scoring in the third quarter but the Ravens ended up with good field possession late in the fourth quarter and Liam Gamble punched the ball across the line for the touchdown to give the Ravens an 11-7 lead. The Giants came close at the end but they lost the ball on downs and the Ravens took the knee to end the game. Lions claw past Wolves Jeff Moore Record Staff MORRISBURG – The Morrisburg Lions had a tough task going into the Oct. 3-5 weekend as they took on the then second place Winchester Hawks on Fri., Oct. 3, then played host to the third- place Alexandria Glens on Sat. Oct. 4, and the Akwesasne Wolves in a matinee on Sun., Oct. 5.

The Lions fell to the Hawks on Fri. night 8-2 in a penalty-filled game. On Sat. night, the Lions kept pace with the Alexandria Glens until the second half of the game when the Glens scored four unanswered goals taking the game 6-2. On Sun, the Lions welcomed the Wolves in a battle for fourth place in the St. Lawrence Division of the EOJHL. The Lions led by two goals twice in the game but the Wolves caught them both times forcing the game into overtime. After nothing was solved in the overtime period the game headed to a shootout. The shootout went five rounds before the Lions’ Michael Paquette scored to give them the win.

Lions 5 Wolves 4 (SO) MORRISBURGThe Morrisburg Lions welcomed the Akwesasne Wolves to the Morrisburg Arena for a matinee game on Sun., Oct. 5.

The Lions were playing the third game in three days and looked to battle their way out of the cellar as they were tied with the Char-Lan Rebels going into the game.

The Wolves were only one point up on the Lions and

with a win the Lions could move into fourth place. The Lions jumped out to the lead at 6:17 of the first period as Dallas Blacksmith scored a power play goal from Justin Lefebvre and Dylan Nixon.

The Lions took a two-goal lead at 11:18 as Jordan St. Louis jammed one past the Wolves keeper from Ryan Griffin and Jacob Guillot.

The Wolves scored two unanswered goals at 11:41 and 18:34 to tie the game at two heading into the first intermission.

In the second period, the Lions scored just 1:27 as Lefebvre got one to go from Blacksmith and Eric Evans to retake the lead. The Lions restored their two-goal lead when Evans scored an unassisted goal as he finished off on a breakaway at 5:40.

The Wolves got one back at 11:41 and trailed 4-3 heading into the second intermission. In the third period, the Wolves got to even just 1:08 into the frame. The teams traded scoring chances for the rest of the period but neither team could score before the end of regulation.

The game headed to a five-minute, four-on-four overtime period. Both teams registered two shots on goal but the goaltenders kept the puck out. The game headed to a shootout.

Vikings host CCHL game Jeff Moore Record Staff CASSELMAN – The Casselman Vikings hosted a Junior ‘A’ Central Canadian Hockey League game between the Ottawa Jr. Senators and the Hawkesbury Hawks in a regular season game. The Senators were the home team in this game.

The game was a defensive gem in the first two periods as there were very little scoring chances. The Senators scored at 2:46 when a shot went into the net off of the Hawks’ goalies mask and into the net.

The Senators picked up their second of the game at the halfway point of the second period.

The Lions had plenty of power play opportunities but failed to cash in. The Lions’ goaltender Keiran Weir suffered the loss.

Next week The Lions travel to CharLan to take on the Rebels on Sat., Oct. 11, at 8 p.m.

The Hawks fought back in the third as they closed the gap to one at the six-minute mark but the Senators scored an empty net goal as the Hawks pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and took the game 3-1.

The Senators outshot the Hawks 33-21 and both teams went 0-3 on the power play.

The Casselman Vikings hosted a CCHL game at the J.R. Brisson Complex on Thurs., Oct. 2, which featured the Ottawa Jr. Senators and the Hawkesbury Hawks. The Russell High School T-Wolves Girl’s junior basketball team played a double header on Wed., Oct. 1. In the first game they took on the St. Thomas Aquinas Ravens in the morning.

The Ravens were just too powerful for the TWolves on this day as they cruised to a 36-10 win. Top scorers for the Ravens were Kylie Krapp with 12 points and Annie MacKinnon with seven. In their second game in the afternoon they took on another tough team, the St. Francis Xavier Falcons. The Falcons put the pressure on and the T-Wolves could not contain the Falcons’ offence as they fell 35-13 to flying prey. Top scorer for the T-Wolves was Kylie Beisheim with six points. A ride through Russell’s history Carolyn Thompson Goddard Villager Contributer RUSSELL— The Russell Historical Society (RHS) celebrated the educational history of Russell at its annual Heritage Festival held at the Keith Boyd Museum on Oct. 4.

Included in the eventfilled day were displays of area schools, storytelling by former students and teachers as well as horse-drawn wagon rides throughout the village.

One of the highlights of the day was the unveiling of a restored “Democrat” wagon. This wagon was donated to the Society by Emerson, Heather and Dorothy Kincaid in memory of the late Norman Kincaid.

The wagon, owned by Walter Kincaid, was an integral part of the Kincaid family farm being used not only to transport milk to the Marvelville Cheese Factory but also to transport seed to the fields for planting and people to town.

Dating from the early 1900s, this horse-drawn wagon would have been pulled by a pair of Percheron horses and had been in competitions at the Russell Fair.

After its donation to the RHS, Hugh Latimer and Armand Charlebois (formerly of Chesterville) spent a winter working on the refurbishing of this piece of Canadiana. According to Charlebois it involved a great deal of research, especially in the area of wheel making. The wagon has a steel tire that is nailed onto a wooden wheel and while two of these wheels were in good condition, two others had to be repaired. The repairs involved making some new spokes and tire frames of ash wood. The new tire frames had to be bent using extreme heat to fit the steel tires.

This was the second project that Latimer and Charlebois collaborated on, the first being a McLaughlin cutter that is housed in the Fire Hall museum.

Of his work on the wagon, Latimer is quoted as saying, “In my opinion, it was time well spent. We not only learned a lot, we had fun doing it …” and these two gentleman have been able to provide their community with an opportunity to see a mode of transportation that disappeared almost half a centu-

Region’s rare breeds chapter reorganized

Simard: taking a run at council seat Pamela Pearson Russell News Editor EMBRUN — Amanda Simard, a lifelong resident of Embrun, is running for councillor in the municipal election on Oct. 27.

There has been some confusion as to Simard's role in the election as “being on the team of other candidates”, but Simard assures residents that she is not. “I am running my own campaign, however I am very keen to work with the newly elected council.”

Simard graduated from Embrun High School to attend La Cité collégiale and continued her education at University of Ottawa, graduating with a law degree. In 2009, Simard was chosen to be a Senate Page in the Parliament of Canada where she quickly moved up to her current position as Policy Advisor, working with Senator Suzanne Fortin Duplessis, herself the first female elected municipal councillor in her home of Sainte Foy, Que., in 1981.

Simard has received

numerous awards and scholarships, notably the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for significant service to the country; the Canada Millennium Scholarship for leadership, innovation, academic excellence and community involvement; and is fully proficient in both French and English.

Simard’s interest in municipal affairs grew, when at UofO, she took a municipal law course.

“Although I am young,” Simard noted, “I am educated and experienced in the ways of how the political ring works.”

Simard has been considering running for awhile, but held off posting her nomination only because she wanted to make sure she could commit the time needed to be, what she believes, a successful councillor. “It is not just about attending council meetings, but also about attending community events and showing residents that you support them and are willing to listen to their ideas or needs.

It is about knowing how

your municipality works and being approachable. It is our duty as councillors to be visible, knowledgeable and experienced.”

Amongst many other activities, Amanda was on the organizing committee of the Banquet de la Francophonie de PrescottRussell the year that the Prime Minister of Canada was the guest of honour and came to Embrun. She also helped the outdoor mégaspectacle “L’Écho d’un peuple” when it played in our region.

When The Villager asked Simard what her main platforms are, she stated, “Development, recreation, environment and communication.”

Simard did not give specifics but commented “We have to ensure that green space is protected, whether that be fighting the proposed TaggartMiller waste project or working in partnership with the developers. We have to make sure that the municipality is ready to continue the fight and go to the province if necessary to do that.”

Amanda Simard Simard noted that she has also been out speaking with small businesses in the area. “With the number of houses being built, as a municipality we need to expand the commercial component of our community. This includes making sure we have shops which will create jobs here rather than in the city. We also need to continue the current study of what is need for recreational facilities.

This is important to keep attracting newcomers and to encourage our kids to stay.”

Simard continued, “We must think beyond what we can do as council members. We can all make promises but who can make them happen? Those who are experienced and know how to deal with a variety of situations — I believe I am one of those people.”

RUSSELL — Rare Breeds Canada recently decided, at their Annual General Meeting, they would no longer have Chapters but would rather have these groups known as Support Groups. The local Eastern Ontario Chapter, one of the oldest of the Chapters (organized in 1996), was quite surprised by the move but members have decided to stick together and move forward as an individual club.

Member Lindley McPhail noted that after some reflection, and with more than 65 members demonstrating a strong interest in conserving and promoting Heritage Livestock, the chapter will tote a new name as well — Heritage Livestock Club of Eastern Ontario, seeing this as the ideal opportunity to reshape their group to better serve the interests of the members in a more casual format.

“In order to include all members in all meetings and workshops, we will focus on round table discussions, experience sharing and general networking. In this way, we can all go away from each event having shared with and learned from our fellow members.” said McPhail. “We will continue to achieve our goals and objectives by participating in local fairs, exhibitions

and harvest festivals, as we have for the past several years, bringing the awareness of the importance of conserving Heritage Livestock to as many people as possible. We will also continue our educational presentations at Cumberland Museum, Upper Canada Village, in schools and to 4-H groups as requested.”

McPhail also stated the Heritage Club will reach out to other groups in the area who share many of our interests related to traditional methods of farming and healthy foods. As in the past, membership is open to anyone interested in heritage livestock, developing niche markets, growing naturally raised food and associated interests.

“Using the expertise of our senior members, we are willing to assist with the sourcing of livestock, the registration process and coaching in the development of niche markets as requested and marketing opportunities will be offered through the use of a new and updated Club's website,” stated McPhail.

Upcoming meetings of the club will be at the Recreation Centre in Dunvegan (19053 Cty. Rd. 24) on Sat., Oct. 18 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. or at the Township Council building at Black’s Corners on Sun., Nov. 2 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

RHS student attends youth ambassadors program RUSSELL â&#x20AC;&#x201C; A 15-yearold Russell High School (RHS) student rubbed shoulders with ambassadors this summer while learning about citizenship and how to make her community better.

Student Brianna Dabrowski was one of only 18 Canadian students who participated in the State University of New Yorkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (SUNY) Youth Ambassadors Program with Canada initiative from July 21 to Aug. 10.

The three-week leadership program focused on civic education, community service, youth leadership development and entrepreneurship. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The youth ambassadors program was a great experience,â&#x20AC;? stated Dabrowski. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I met so many new people who truly inspire me. The speakers during the program taught me so many useful

things that I can use everyday. I loved visiting all the historical and tourist sites.

The whole trip was an amazing learning experience.â&#x20AC;?

The program took her to the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa, the State University of New York, Plattsburgh, and Washington, D.C. where students discovered how to make their communities better through a variety of lectures on topics ranging from youth leadership to the role of international leadership.

After learning about community involvement and civic duty, the participants will implement actual community projects of their own at home.

Dabrowski has already started the ball rolling on her own project. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I've created a youth group for girls ages 11 and up called Girls Aloud. It focuses on how the choices one can make everyday

Dr. Kirkey spoke about leadership and what qualities/virtues good leaders exhibit â&#x20AC;&#x201C; leadership qualities I try to show in daily life.â&#x20AC;?

When asked by The Villager what new perspectives she gained, and how she feels they will help her this year at RHS, Dabrowski noted that everyone she met on the trip inspired her to be more involved in her school and community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have already signed up for Where Everybody Belongs (WEB) and Ontario Students Travel is another great way to learn outside the class with classmates and teachers. There is an active Ski Club at OTHS which organizes day and weekend trips to ski hills in the winter.

In the spring of 2015, some students will travel to New York City. The OTHS Band is in the process of planning a trip abroad, possibly to Cuba in spring 2015. Then, the following year, there is a planned trip to Europe.

And of course, there is plenty to learn about here in our own village. The

NDPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cappuccino steamed over global warming HAWKESBURY â&#x20AC;&#x201D;Â The Glengarry-Prescott-Russell NDP Association held its Annual General Meeting on Sept. 27, in Hawkesbury. In attendance was guest speaker Fred Cappuccino, a humanitarian and member of the Order of Canada.

In a media release from the GPR association, Cappuccino's message indicated, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The NDP has a better chance than ever before to form the next government of Canada.â&#x20AC;? He citied Canadian writer Naomi Klein: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Global warming is the defining issue of our era.

Every new barrel of oil is a nail in our collective coffin.â&#x20AC;?

Also according to Cappuccino, the country is in the midst of a real â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;paradigm shiftâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in public awareness and asked, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Where is Justin Trudeau? He has just come out in favour of oil pipelines. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in touch with the oil barons,â&#x20AC;? said Cappuccino, â&#x20AC;&#x153;but is he in

touch with the people?â&#x20AC;?

As for Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Cappuccino said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The sky seems to be falling on his head, and he may well have to retire from public life if the Mike Duffy trial happens before or during the next federal campaign.â&#x20AC;?

Cappuccino, a Unitarian minister for 69 years and a former candidate in the riding, also called on his fellow New Democrats to â&#x20AC;&#x153;commit themselves anewâ&#x20AC;? to the struggle for human betterment and peace.

The members of the Association went on to elect a new executive and to adopt a number of resolutions to be presented at the Ontario Provincial Convention, Nov. 14 to 16 in Toronto.
