Rec director criticized
Pride of Workmanship nominations
Nelson Zandbergen Record Staff BERWICK — With most of the township’s recreation committees watching from the sidelines in the Council Chambers, a local critic of North Stormont’s first staff recreation director urged council to undertake an independent audit into that department’s books. Kenda tePlate alleged no wrongdoing but delivered a litany of complaints about Alex Gibson in his role as the township’s first recreation director and economic development officer. The position sees Gibson heading a new recreation department in a township where such services are still largely run by committees of volunteers in each of the preamalgamation villages. Earlier this year, Gibson survived

Finch Arena reopening put off to unknown date Facility not ready for regular season start Nelson Zandbergen Record Staff FINCH — The Finch Arena won’t be ready to make ice by the usual mid-September start to the season in North Stormont and could possibly miss reopening in 2013 altogether. Delays related to the extensive renovation project underway at the aging facility could push the
reopening beyond December, Mayor Dennis Fife confirmed last week, in the wake of council’s recent hiring of Dale Coleman Construction to oversee completion as project manager. The approximately $2-million project had been managed internally by the township’s public works superintendent, Blake Henderson, until council replaced
him in that role with the Finchbased contractor near the beginning of August. The arena’s delayed return to service, as well as the outsourcing of project management, came as a surprise to many observers at council’s last meeting, Tues., Aug. 20. By the mayor’s estimate, Dale Coleman Construction will be paid

The project began earlier this year to replace deteriorating cooling pipes buried in the original slab. The scope of the work began to mushroom after the township itself tore out that slab, exposing problems with the underlying fill Continued on page 2

Hugo Leon fired a five under, 67, during the final round of the PGATour Canada’s Great Waterway Classic, Aug. 25 at Upper Canada Golf Course, to capture the championship. Fort Henry guards Brendan Monohan (left) and Zack Hoefs appear with the Chilean professional golfer and his trophy. Leon started the day one-back of the leader in the final group. Despite a late charge by Brandon Harkins, Leon birdied the 16th to earn a share of the lead and then took the outright lead with a birdie on 17. It was Leon’s second win on the tour and first of the season. (For more photos and complete story see The Sports Pages on pages 12 and 13 .
