Finch Arena reopening put off to unknown date Facility not ready for regular season start Nelson Zandbergen Record Staff FINCH â&#x20AC;&#x201D; The Finch Arena wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be ready to make ice by the usual mid-September start to the season in North Stormont and could possibly miss reopening in 2013 altogether.

Delays related to the extensive renovation project underway at the aging facility could push the

reopening beyond December, Mayor Dennis Fife confirmed last week, in the wake of councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recent hiring of Dale Coleman Construction to oversee completion as project manager.

The approximately $2-million project had been managed internally by the townshipâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s public works superintendent, Blake Henderson, until council replaced

him in that role with the Finchbased contractor near the beginning of August.

The arenaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s delayed return to service, as well as the outsourcing of project management, came as a surprise to many observers at councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s last meeting, Tues., Aug. 20.

By the mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s estimate, Dale Coleman Construction will be paid

about $100,000 to take over and manage other contractors previously awarded work related to the replacement of the slab and refrigeration system.

­Rotary­fundraisers­catch­fire­for­good­causes

Chesterville Rotarians Rev. Bruce Kemp and Joe Cass (obscured by barbecue smoke) were among the Club members assisting with the summerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second Music on the Waterfront event, Aug. 21, which raised over $600 to help Lac-MĂŠgantic, Quebec, devastated this summer by a runaway train and explosion. The Club also contributed a further $3,000. Proceeds of the first Music on the Waterfront event, nearly $1,000 went to High River, Alberta, flood relief, on top of which the Club similarly donated a further $3,000.

bringing in an outside project manager about three weeks ago, he said, because of the escalating demands on Hendersonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It just became too big a job with all the problems we came across.â&#x20AC;?

When the project began, the township believed the revamped arena would be ready in time for the regular start of the season this fall, according to the mayor. He

said the opening date may be pushed past December at this point but still held some optimism for an earlier finish to the work. It all hinges on awaited recommendations from the townshipâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s engineers on how to build new side walls and what that work may entail. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think in two weeks we should have a pretty firm answer once these walls are decided,â&#x20AC;? the mayor said.

But he acknowledged the township has known for the past two or three weeks that it would miss the usual midSeptember start to the ice season. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re more afraid of giving out a wrong date until we really know whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going on,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Word of the holdup has left unhappy Finch Youth Broomball organizers scrambling to salvage their season.

Program coordinator Eve Campbell expressed concern that neither she nor other recreation groups received notice of the delay once the township knew that 250 local children wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be playing in Finch for at least part of the season. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a big fiasco. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to happen to Finch broomball now,â&#x20AC;? said Campbell a day after the council meeting.

The broomballers normally take to the ice at the beginning of October but begin registrations in mid-September, she said.

Campbell has already made calls in a search for available ice in Winchester and Chesterville. Time was only available between 4 and 5 p.m. and after 10 p.m., which doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work out for the program, she said.

program is also expected to feel the effects of a Finch Arena out of commission for the time being.

When asked about the delay in notifying the community about the Arenaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unavailable status, Councillor Richard Neville this week commented, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have an arena manager.â&#x20AC;? He added that â&#x20AC;&#x153;a fewâ&#x20AC;? other residents associated with the facility had also found out about the delayed reopening.

Nov. 15 was floated as the earliest possible return to service when the new project manager inspected the site at the beginning of August, according to Neville. But the councillor also conceded that matters look less optimistic now. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be surprised if we have ice in there before the end of the year,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Avonmore marks Oktoberfest on Sept. 7

Former Councillor Lianne Acres-Hanna resigned shortly after her approved resolution to do so was reversed when the mayor returned from vacation and the voting dynamic changed around the council table.

Before she began her presentation, Mayor Dennis Fife reminded tePlate that she was limited to 15 minutes and that he would intervene if necessary. tePlate tackled Gibson — who wasn’t in attendance — on both the economic development and recreation aspects of the job, starting with his ‘A Good Place to Grow’ slogan being promoted on new signs in North Stormont.

“I read an article in The Chesterville Record. The first thing that caught my eye was the gentleman in the photo was not shaven, and a little bit — I didn’t know who he was — and the sign. I continued to read and much to my surprise it had to do with the economic development plan which I had not heard of at all.” tePlate slammed the plan for being developed without consulting the sector that represents 80 per cent of the North Stormont economy: agriculture.

“I was very disappointed in it,” said the Stormont Federation of Agriculture director and secretary of the Stormont Milk Producers.

“I feel we have a strong voice as agriculture, and I feel we should be consulted.” tePlate also highlighted the lack of a promoted summer ‘Y’ camp for youth that didn’t come to fruition this year, although the mayor explained it was kiboshed as a result of interrupted planning prompted by council’s vote — later reversed — to seek

new applicants for the rec director’s job. tePlate similarly took aim at a recreation survey that was mailed out to local schools, raising expectations of new programs that didn’t materialize.

She also said she had a number of emails of concern from the township’s recreation groups and offered them to council.

“I feel there has been enough information sent to council to act on their [the rec groups’] wishes … and to address the concerns I have and put forth with regards to the competancy and performance of the recreation, marketing and economic development department,” she said.

When tePlate tried to suggest some responsibility on the part of the CAO, the mayor interjected, “We’re not here to bash staff.”

“I’m not bashing staff,” the presenter replied.

“Yes, you are,” Fife responded.

“No, I am not. I am here because I feel there is a lot of money being spent that could go into the recreation and be used to their betterment. The concerns of these recreation committees are real, and it deserves to be addressed now. This has gone on for too long, from the dates I see on these memos to me. It is totally unacceptable. As a taxpayer and a resident, I would like to see some answers for these people.”

She lauded the volunteer recreation groups for their efforts and for actually making “North Stormont a good place to grow.”

Gibson contacted The Record a few days before the council meeting, knowing the presenter was on the public agenda.

He also reiterated that North Stormont didn’t have a summer camp because of the uncertainty he had about his job after the January vote in the mayor’s absence.

“I had been working on that since October.”

“I want what’s best for everybody in this community,” he said, emphasizing that the

township’s six recreation committees “hold great events,” but “we need to start seeing a vision for a township.”

This building, which during the Avonmore Fair hosted the Barn Dance with “Ambush” and the Entertainment Area, will

again this winter be used as a storage unit, as spaces will be rented out for winter storage of vehicles and camping equipment.

The Avonmore Oktoberfest draws people from all over Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec, and has become a fall tradition in the area, which until this year was always held in a tent, so the September date was chosen to take advantage of the warmer weather in the

evenings. A crowd favourite each year is the wide variety of desserts, which are included with the meal, of German potato salad, sausages and sauerkraut, with a roll and coffee. Of course the bar will have a selection of German beers for your enjoyment. There are lots of free on site parking available as well.

Ethnically cleansed Is Quebec turning into a police state? In an effort to preserve their “distinct culture,” the government of Quebec is planning on placing a lot of restrictions on residents of La Belle Province.

First it was language where they have language police going around fining people and businesses for having English predominantly on signs seen by passers-by. Even menu items are inspected to make sure they are in French and not English. That was bad enough, but it was even rumoured that children in French schools were not allowed to speak English while playing in the schoolyard.

Then it was decided that children playing soccer could not wear turbans. It was cited as a safety precaution to ban the turbans. It seems that while helmets aren’t required to play the game a turban will actually provide protection rather than become a safety concern. FIFA overruled the ban allowing all Canadian Sikhs to wear turbans while playing.

And now the Parti Quebecois is hoping to pass a “Charter of Quebec Values” that will ban all public employees from wearing any sort of religious garb, whether it is a turban, a hijab, a yamika or a crucifix around your neck.

That means teachers, doctors and daycare workers will all be affected.

Quebec has always said that multiculturalism does not work and if you want to live in that province, then you must be a Quebecer first and anything else second. While this was at first just relegated to the language you speak, now it extends to your religious freedom of expression.

This could be a very good thing for Ontario and other neighbouring provinces. Ontario is in dire need of doctors and would welcome with open arms any doctor regardless of his or her religious beliefs who will feel the need to leave Quebec because their religious freedom of expression is being suppressed.

Does it really matter what your doctor wears on his or her head or around his or her neck? Isn’t the level of education and work ethic a much more important factor in deciding on a doctor than how they choose to dress?

This new Charter can only end up hurting the reputation of the province. Not only will doctors and teachers who are affected by the ban leave the province causing serious repercussions to health care and education, but it will discourage anyone from making that province their home if they wish to display their religious beliefs by way of accessories. Some non-religious types may leave just on principle alone. First it was language, then it was religion, next it could be the level of your education, or the colour of your hair.

Justin Trudeau, himself a Quebecer, met with Premier Pauline Marois about the ban and asked her to reconsider.

Apparently they agreed to disagree. Trudeau is concerned that Quebec will become a laughing stock as it did with the soccer turban ban. He is right. It is a narrow-minded, un-sympathetic motion that divides a community instead of bringing it together.

Premier Marois, on the other hand thinks it will unify the province and have an important and lasting effect on Quebec. It will have a lasting effect. It will seal Quebec’s reputation as an intolerant province that tries to force all residents to think the same way.

It’s a little like ethnic cleansing, isn’t it?

In and around our house on King Street there was usually a flurry of comings and goings throughout the day which sometimes lasted into the wee hours of the morning. There always seemed to be someone getting ready for something or someone arriving home with an interesting story to tell.

Dinner times were always interesting for there was often tantalizing tidbits of the day’s activities or perhaps the latest news from an afternoon tea.

Weekends were generally extra exciting, for in addition to the usual happenings, there was all the confusion surrounding 3 or 4 teenaged boys getting ready for their evening dates. Of course this usually meant that I had extra chores for once I learned to iron (when I was around 6), it often fell to me to press that shirt that needed to be done right away or head a search party looking for an elusive pair of shoes or cufflinks.

Then there was the anticipation of walking down stairs on a weekend morning to see if there were any unexpected visitors. Mom often mentioned that when we were growing up she never knew who she would find sleeping on the couch in the living room as she began her day.

There were many weekend mornings when a cousin or friend of a family member could be found at the breakfast table in the morning. I remember one time walking into the

kitchen on a Saturday morning and seeing one of my cousins at the table.

While finishing breakfast he conversed with Mom, telling her about the car accident that had resulted in his sojourn on our couch.

Once I was reassured that he was okay, I was quite happy because I knew that sometime during the day there would be a trip back to Aunt Myrtle’s farm to see the young fellow safely home.

There was also something about growing up in small town Canada during the ’60s. This was a decade that is often touted as being a decade of incredible change, but somehow it didn’t seem to greatly affect the Chesterville of my youth. Looking down King Street (or any village street for that matter) you would have seen children playing, riding bicycles, perhaps getting into some mischief, but you also would have seen an adult or two having a tea on a porch or working in a flower bed keeping a quiet eye on the activities of the youngsters. You knew that if you misbehaved before you could make it home your parents would be advised of the event and you would be held responsible for your actions. I guess we knew then that it takes a village to raise a child.

It was a time when there was a lot of life going on around you, good and bad. Every attempt to protect the youngsters from some of the more “adult” occurrences was made.

Despite having inquisitive minds and wanting to know the sensational events of the world outside our home

town, we were told that there would be time enough when we were older to worry about things like that and to enjoy being young. I can happily report that this was something that seemed to be easy enough to do.

During the summers of my youth, once my chores were completed I was free until the noon whistle when I had to scoot home for lunch and my free time in the afternoon would finish when the 5 o’clock whistle blew.

During those times I could ride my bike, go swimming, visit with friends, sit and watch the world go by, read a book, fly a kite or go fishing. Of course there were arguments, disagreements, hurt feelings and accidents but for the most part it was a wonderful time to be a child.

Perhaps this helped to foster a sense of community amongst the Chesterville people that still exists today and will probably exist a hundred years from now. I suspect that despite one’s socioeconomic status, that those who lived in small towns like Chesterville (and perhaps larger centres too) during the turbulent decade of the ’60s have similar experiences to mine. It is these shared experiences that cause the sense of community to grow and thrive resulting in community pride and protectiveness. No matter where we go or what we do, we fondly remember and almost involuntarily protect our home town as well as the people who lived, and continue to live, within its boundaries.

1983 August 31, 1983 After more than 32 years with Canada’s Post Office Wendell Harper is leaving.

Chesterville’s assistant postmaster worked his final day at the Queen Street office on Monday.

“I started on Feb. 10, 1951,” he said on Monday.

“The Post Office at that time was over by Fulton’s Store, about where the parking lot is now. I started out on probation as the assistant postmaster. At that time there was a junior

and a senior assistant and I did just about everything from sorting parcels to working at the wicket to taking in and sending out mail.”

1953 September 3, 1953 Several facts were demonstrated last night at the Fair Grounds. The most important is that you may be able to ride a donkey but it usually doesn’t get you anywhere. Another point to remember is that if you do get anywhere it is not the place you intended to go.

For verification of these facts first baseman Percy Gilroy will supply the full details, with blisters to prove it.

Chesterville Rotary Club and Kemptville Rotary Club fought it out last night in a breathless, suspenseful finish with Chesterville on the winning end, sometimes unintentionally, for a score of 7-4. The players were largely exhausted from their efforts, the crowd laughed out and the donkeys entirely unconcerned.

Henry Parker, combining at the Stock Farm at the first of the week, had a narrow

escape from death. His clothes became tangled in moving machinery, but except for some cuts and bruises, he suffered no serious injury.

Parker had been combining grain and had occasion to step from the tractor to the ground. As he was dropping to the ground, his overalls caught in the spinning power take-off from the tractor to the combine.

Helpless in the grip of the machine, he could only struggle against the pull and try to keep away from the lethal spinning shaft.

NS says OK to ATVs Nelson Zandbergen Record Staff BERWICK — The Nation Valley ATV Club has a green light to extend its trail system into the Township of North Stormont, including proposed sections of legally sanctioned travel along certain roads.

Council officially okayed the Club’s request on Aug. 20, after a delegation of All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) enthusiasts and supporters, including North Dundas Mayor Eric Duncan, successfully pitched the expansion to the local politicians.

North Stormont had been previously reluctant to consider the idea.

The province empowered municipalities several years ago to designate select roads for use by ATVs, which must stay to the right shoulder and observe a lower speed limit than other traffic. In places like North Dundas, designated roads are used to link sections of off-road trail to form an overall network for ATVs. Duncan pointed out that Club members add an element of enforcement and oversight where none may exist now.

That prompted Mayor Dennis Fife to reflect on the current situation in his township. “It’s nothing for

me to go out and see a fourwheeler going down the middle of the road at 10:30 at night, no helmets, no lights, nothing,” said Fife.

“Or you get a road repaired with calcium, and the next day you go back and there are ruts in the middle of the road. That’s where I think the council holdup has been. But you think if there’s a trail system, that kind of goes away or there’s more enforcement?”

“Nobody wants to ride on the roads,” replied Duncan. “If you have an ATV, why would you want to go on the road if I have my car and I can drive down the road, right? They want to get off, they want to get on the trails and into the bush and go through.

“Somebody can still go into the middle of a gravel road and do 17 donuts down a gravel road tomorrow.

[But] given an opportunity to do something else besides go on the road … give them something to do, seemed for us [in North Dundas] to work very well.”

A Club leader similarly explained that the presence of a trail system “discourages people who are non-members from just going out and tearing up and down the roads.”

The ATV enthusiasts also pitched the idea of a broader bylaw that would permit Club members with

licensed and stickered machines to drive from their homes to reach the trail system, regardless of the starting address — the rule now applied in the Casselman area and proposed in Ottawa’s Osgoode ward. But that seemed too much of a stretch for council, which favoured designating roads, such as County Rd. 9 between Berwick and Chesterville, without offering a blanket exemption to accommodate riding in from elsewhere in the township.

“I see it as a logical first step. I see it as a logical baby step towards perhaps deregulation down the road if this works,” said Deputy Mayor Bill McGimpsey, who also saw cooperation with the ATVers as “good for the economy.”

“It has a lot of potential, but obviously we have to respect the rights of those who are non-ATV users as well,” said a supportive Councillor Jim Wert.

No council members spoke against designating specific roads for ATVs in a new bylaw still to be written up.

The impending rule change in North Stormont applies to recreational ATVs not being used in the conduct of agriculture.

Farmers are already permitted to drive ATVs on Ontario roads as necessary, like any farm machinery.

Lois Ann Baker Record Staff CHESTERVILLE â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been over seven years since local author Lisa LalondeBoucher started jotting down notes about a beloved family pet who passed away and as a result a new childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book, Cally, is born.

Lalonde-Boucher originally hails from Smiths Falls and has been involved with animals her whole life. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was the child who brought home the injured bunnies and the squirrels and whatever I could find,â&#x20AC;? she said. Lalonde-Boucher spent most of her career working in animal shelters or vet clinics with spayneuter programs or emergency clinics for shelters. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cally is actually a real dog. She came into my life when we lived in Niagara.

Unfortunately we lost Cally at a young age,â&#x20AC;? she said.

The experience was heartbreaking for the family and when her daughter Madison was just a baby she started jotting down notes and memories about Cally.

The book is told by Callyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s point of view and follows her adventures from being rescued to ending up in a shelter. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a nice way to keep her alive and well through a kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s view,â&#x20AC;? said Lalonde-Boucher. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kids are so attached to animals and those that are have a real

passion for them.â&#x20AC;?

Lalonde-Boucher said that as her daughter got older, she would often ask it they could read over Callyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s story and Lalonde-Boucher would dig out her notes and read the story. After a while even Madisonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s friends were asking to hear more about Cally. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my biggest fan,â&#x20AC;? said Lalonde-Boucher of Madison. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have always written,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I was younger it was poetry.â&#x20AC;?

Lalonde-Boucher said a lot of her writing came to her after a loss of some sort, like a grandparent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Instead of focusing on the negative, I would go into more of the positive,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Lalonde-Boucher said she is already planning on another book. This one on grieving for children. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s based on a dog and of course as the child gets older, so does the dog,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a nice story, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a little ways away.â&#x20AC;?

Lalonde-Boucherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current book is not yet available for purchase but she is planning on a big book launch. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just going to be a fun day,â&#x20AC;? she said. LalondeBoucher said the launch will be held at The Gathering House and will include face painting and an activity centre. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Just to make it a fun

two hours,â&#x20AC;? she added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a process,â&#x20AC;?

Lalonde-Boucher said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everything I am doing is local. My printer is local, my illustrator is local and a few of my friends are in the book because they have been through the shelter experience.â&#x20AC;?

The process was a real learning experience for Lalonde-Boucher. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Having it edited and reedited. It turned out really good,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And the first time I saw the illustrations put to my words, it was a moment.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I loved the process,â&#x20AC;? she said. The whole family got involved in the book, with husband Corey reading and re-reading. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When Madison hit reading age she would be reading and would say â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;what does that word mean?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; and I would scratch that word and substitute it with another,â&#x20AC;? said Lalonde-Boucher. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a little insight to shelters and rescues and the wonderful dog that she was,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She came into our life for a reason and this is a great way to keep her into our life.â&#x20AC;?

The book launch is scheduled for Sun., Sept. 15 at The Gathering House from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Some of the proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to animal shelters and rescues Lalonde-Boucher said.

Shop Hop stops at Flair with Fabrics Erin Chambers Special to The Record CHESTERVILLE â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The annual Shop Hop at Flair with Fabrics (Aug. 22-23) saw fans of sewing and quilting from all across the area drop by the local shop to pick up tips on sewing, look at fabrics and participate in the annual theme, which changes every year.

The Shop Hop takes places at eight different stores, including participating retailers in Kanata, Orleans and Richmond.

Flair with Fabrics is the farthest Southeast out of all the stores.

A quilt was also featured at Flair with Fabrics, titled, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Tulipomania,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; featuring fabric blocks of petals and tulips. Quilting enthusiasts could buy one block at each of the eight stores to put together, or purchase the kit for the entire quilt at one

store.

Shania Sunga, who was at the store on Friday, is a fabric and pattern designer at Cantik Patiks, a company whose fabrics are exclusive to the eight stores. Sunga visited all the way from Vancouver, where Cantik Patiks is situated. Sunga has designed six collections with over 64 designs, which all follow a nature theme.

The fabric squares featured on the quilt were done by her hand, and specially designed for the quilt.

Valerie Miller of Renfrew was also a part of that day. Miller, who designed the Tulipomania quilt, explained the historical significance behind the name. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At one point tulips were rare, and worth almost as much as gold,â&#x20AC;? Miller said.

The flowers were once very exclusive, and then sudden-

ly everywhere, hence the term.

and the fabric squares will only be available for six months.

Jim McDonell held his second riding picnic of the summer on Aug. 25 in Chesterville.

McDonell said he wanted to host one in each end of the riding just because of its size. McDonell was expecting about 100 people to drop by.

Chile’s Leon wins second Great Waterway Classic Darren Matte Sports Editor MORRISBURG— The 2013 Great Waterway Classic dealt with severe weather when the PGATour Canada event got underway on Aug. 22 at the Upper Canada Golf Course in Morrisburg. However, after the first day it was clear skies and sun as the area witnessed some great golf. The event saw holes in one, massive drives, new course records and ultimately a new champion, in the form of Hugo Leon, crowned.

On the opening day, some golfers made it through the 12th hole but most were still on the front nine when the horn sounded to bring everyone back into the clubhouse.

The leader at the time of the delay was American Will Stickler who was -5 through nine holes.

When play did get underway the wet course meant slow fairways and greens.

2012 winner at Smuggler’s Glen in Gananoque, North Vancouver’s Eugene Wong, was through nine and at even par when play was delayed.

He gave his thoughts on

returning to the event as champion. “It is great to return as defending champion. It’s my first time defending a tour event and I feel great about my game.

Winning last year was great especially with it being the inaugural event and having my name be the first engraved on the trophy.

Winning three straight tournaments was a shock at the time but now it’s set in and I have realized how much I’ve accomplished.”

Returning as the event champion does create some added pressure for Wong.

“You want to defend the win but at the same time it gives you confidence knowing that I can do it again.”

Early on, Wong believes he has done a good job handling the pressure. “So far it has been good. I just try to keep calm, stay relaxed out on the course and not look too far ahead.”

Wong did notice some similarities with the 2013 course and the one he won on in 2012 in terms of needing to be accurate off the tees because of narrow fairways but did say that the tee boxes at Upper Canada didn’t have

the same elevation as the ones at Smuggler’s Glen.

At the time of the delay in the opening round, Wong sat at even par through nine.

He finished the first round at even par, six back of the leaders. However, after a three over, 75, in round two, Wong missed the cut and was unable to defend his title.

Open qualifying for the event took place earlier in the week, Aug. 19, at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club. One Eastern Ontario golfer, Carl Desjardins from Chute-a-Blondeau, earned his way in with a round of 68 tying him for fifth. He spoke about what it meant to him to get into the tournament. “It had been three years since I had played in a competitive tournament and I have played less than 20 games this season. I wanted to see where my game was. It was great to qualify, but today has been tough,” Desjardin explained after his opening round concluded on day two of the event. “I finished with a 76 and found out this morning that my clubs were an illegal size so I have been using a different set.”

The Hawkesbury Golf and Country Club member is not feeling the pressure though even if he is one of the few Eastern Ontario golfers in the field. “I’m not feeling it too much. I am just trying to make the cut. I hope I can play well and see where I end up.”

Desjardins did have a much better second round shooting a 72, but his troubles during the opening round were too much and he too missed the cut.

At the end of the first round it was Alberta’s Steven Lecuyer, Americans JJ Spaun and Strickler who shared the lead at six under par. The opening round also saw a pair of hole in ones as Brett Lederer and George Bradford each sunk a tee shot during day one. For Lederer, it came on the 15th with a six-iron and Bradford did it on the third with a pitching wedge.

With the sun out on Aug. 23, the course began to dry up. As some players finished up their first round, the second round got underway a little later than scheduled at 11:30 a.m. By the end of the day a new leader emerged as Brazilian Lucas Lee held the lead at 13 under by one stroke over American Sean Shahi.

Shahi would continue to make a move on the third day. He had one of the best rounds on Aug. 24, with a six under 66 and took the lead at -18 into Sunday.

On the final round it continued to be Shahi in front as he was one under for the round through seven holes.

American Brandon Harkins

made a charge on the final day as he was seven under through 11 holes and just a shot off the lead. Harkins continued his strong play and finished the round at an incredible 10 under, 62, and held the clubhouse lead at 21 under.

“I have been hitting well all week,” said Harkins. “It was just a matter of putting, which I did well today. I was just trying not to think about the round as I went along. I was chatting with my caddie, who is a tour player himself, and it made the day seem easy.”

Harkins knew he still had to sit through another hour to find out if he would be the winner.

After Harkins was in the clubhouse, the focus shifted back to the final pairing of Shahi and Hugo Leon. After a birdie on 13, Leon had tied Shahi at 20 under. On the par four, 16th, Leon’s tee shot wound up on the cart path and he received a free drop.

His approach was excellent and set up a birdie putt to tie.

He made no mistake and vaulted into the lead.

Meanwhile, the leader to start the day Shahi, continued to play par-golf on the back nine. He never quite got the bounces and would finish in third at 20 under for the tournament.

On 17, Leon made another great approach and had a makeable putt for birdie.

Again, the flat stick didn’t fail him as he drained the putt to take the outright lead.

Leon hit the fairway and the green on 18 and was able to two-putt for the win, capturing the 2013 Great Waterway Classic.

“It has been awhile since I have played very good golf like I did this week. It took a lot of hard work, but to be able to just walk the course and hit shots they way I did was great. I felt really good out there today.”

Leon went on to talk about how his play at the end of the round made the difference. “Usually you look at the end and I played well on the end part of the course all week. I knew if I got to 17 in striking distance, I would have a shot. I made some crucial putts earlier in the round

like an eight-footer on four for par and then an eightfooter on 11, downhill for birdie. All that kept the round mistake-free. I trusted that my game would come through for me today.”

Leon was asked about the late charge by Harkins and when he noticed his name shoot up the leaderboard. “I saw the leaderboard on the 14th but he gave me a little relief at that time. It is nice to know that there is a number. I knew pars weren’t going to cut it and I had to be aggressive at some point.”

Leon concluded with what the win meant to him.

“This win is very big for me

The Sports Pages Page 13 because after I won in August of 2011, and November that year, my game hasn’t been the same. I have worked as hard as I ever have in my life to help get it back. To hit the ball the way that I did, play the way that I did and feel the way that I did is an amazing accomplishment.”

With that, the stop at the Upper Canada Golf Course is officially over. With the win, Leon jumped to fourth on the money list and is now in one of the five spots to earn a Web.com Tour card for next season. PGATour Canada has three tournaments left beginning this weekend with the Wildfire Invitational at the Wildfire Golf Club in Peterborough.

Dave Bissonnette was the Pro-Stock point’s leader, at the Cornwall Motor Speedway, until last night, Aug. 25, when Roch Aubin, behind, jumped into the lead with 516 points compared to Bissonnette’s 514, thanks to a third place finish. Aubin is hungry for his first local championship, while Bissonnette would like to clinch one more title after being a multiple Cornwall Speedway Pro-Stock champion. George Renaud won the ProStock race. Other winners from the evening included Jason Barney in the Sprint car race, Mitch Primeau in the Sportsman and Bruno Richard in the Semi-Pro feature. Next week will be the final program of the season as the Modifieds will wrap with a 125-feature to conclude the Canadian Nationals series, the Pro-Stock will conclude with a 40-lap feature as part of the Mohawk Race Parts series and the Sportsman will also have a 40lap feature to finish the Seaway and GM Performance series. The SemiPro and Rookie classes will conclud with a regular program.

Rippin’ Racers host swim meet C H E S T E RV I L L E — Swimmers from Russell, Moose Creek, Winchester, Manotick, Prescott, Johnstown and Kemptville were all in Chesterville on Aug. 17 to compete in the Rippin’ Racers annual swim meet. Lions prep for season as tryout camp rolls on Darren Matte Sports Editor SPENCERVILLE— As the start of the EOJHL season nears, the Morrisburg Lions are in the heart of their training camp. After a pair of ice times Aug. 18-19, the team held their first exhibition game on Aug. 24 in Spencerville against the Brockville Tikis.

“We are coming along well,” stated Lions General Manager Kevin Casselman.

“Things are a little bit early this year because the start of the Junior A season has been pushed up. We usually hold off, but decided to get a jump start this year.”

Casselman talked about the team’s preseason schedule. “We started about a week or so earlier this year and have a lot of exhibition games in a condensed time.

It will be a good audition and give all of the kids a chance to show what they can do.”

This year’s camp turnout was a good one by

Casselman’s standards. He noted that the trend of high goalie numbers continues.

“We had about 40 kids come out and we still have about seven or eight in Junior A camps. We have had 14 goalies come out.”

The goalies will all be trying to showcase their talents as the team looks to replace Mikael Dion, their overage goalie from the past few seasons who was traded at the deadline to Winchester.

Casselman added, “Replacing Dion is not an easy task.”

In total, the Lions have 14 returning players in camp. However, they may have to look for a replacement to one of last year’s few bright spots. Grant Cooper, who was named to the All-Rookie team last season, is still at the Cornwall Colts camp and from all indications it looks like he will remain with them. “We wish him all the best!” said Casselman.

As for the players that are

in camp they have already impressed the Lions brass.

“So far the skill level is up,” explained Casselman. “Our summer recruiting, done by the coaches, has really paid off.”

While Casselman says it is too early to tell what the team will look like or how they will fair this season he is confident they can compete for a playoff spot in the St. Lawrence Division.

The Lions are hoping to have their roster nearly finalized by the end of this weekend. The aim is that the team can play the final exhibition games together and learn the systems before the season.

They are splitting their preseason between Spencerville and Cornwall before they shift to Long Sault. They will get to their home ice in time for the start of the regular season.

The Lions first home game is Sept. 14 at 7:30 against the Winchester Hawks.

ND United teams look to finish OCSL season strong C H E S T E RV I L L E — With the end to the Ottawa Carleton Soccer League season just a week away, teams from the North Dundas United Soccer Club looked to finish strong even though promotion and relegation were no longer on the line.

MR6 Garrett Milne, William Burgess and Zachary Sloane all netted goals, which paced the North Dundas MR6 team to a 3-1 win over Ottawa United on Aug. 21 in

Ottawa. The squad will wrap up their season tonight, Aug. 28, when they pay Ottawa Hellenic a visit.

OT5 It continues to be a strong finish to the season for the North Dundas OT5 team who made it four wins in their past five games with a 4-1 victory over AC Fiorentina on Aug. 23 in Chesterville. Tony Wouters led the way with a pair of goals, while Clint Hedge and Hugh Grant added the

others. The squad concludes their season on Aug. 30 when they will host the Gloucester Hornets; kickoff is at 7 p.m.

WR4 The North Dundas WR4 team made it back-to-back wins on Aug. 22 when they beat the Fusion 4-2 in Chesterville. Ashley Hill, Chantal Thurler, Kaitlyn Hay and Lindsy Allen all found the net in the victory.

Tomorrow, Aug. 29, the team plays their final game

MR4 (Warriors) It was a disappointing 10 loss for the MR4 Warriors on Aug. 20 when they played host to the Golden Seals. They looked to finish the season on a high note with their finale last night, Aug. 27, in Chesterville against West Ottawa.

MR3 (Sonics) The North Dundas Sonics MR3 team was shut out 2-0 on Aug. 21 at the hands of the Gloucester Hornets in Ottawa. The Sonics are hoping to end their season on a positive this evening, Aug. 28, as they visit the Ottawa Raiders for their season finale.

Shaun Crook did a little bit of everything in the North Dundas United U18s final four games.

He kept a pair of clean sheets as keeper in games on Aug. 15 and the first in a tournament on Aug. 18. Then, in the final two games in the Aug. 18 tournament, he scored a trio of goals.

U18s wrap up season with four straight wins CHESTERVILLE— The North Dundas United U18s wrapped up their regular season on Aug. 15 and finished on Aug. 18 with a Fun Day Tournament. It was only fitting with their dominance in the Southside Soccer League, that the U18s finished with four more wins to cap off a terrific campaign.

North Dundas 2 Nepean (1) 0 The regular season ended with a 2-0 victory on Aug. 15 in Chesterville over the Nepean Hotspurs 1. North Dundas received great goaltending and played strong defense to top Nepean.

Bradley Scheepers and Travis Marshall scored the

goals while Shaun Crook kept the clean sheet.

North Dundas 1 Nepean (1) 0 The two teams met again just three days later as they kicked off the Fun Day Tournament held on Aug. 18 in Kemptville.

North Dundas was able to make it two-straight against Nepean with a 1-0 win thanks to a goal by Dan Trumper. Crook was in net again and kept his second straight clean sheet.

North Dundas 2 Ottawa Internationals 0 United continued their strong defensive play in their second game of the Fun Day Tournament against the Ottawa Internationals with a 2-0 win. Crook was out of

the net in this one and scored a goal; Bryden VanKessell netted the other. Leon Manthey kept the clean sheet in net.

North Dundas 2 Seaway 0 North Dundas got some revenge in their final game of the tournament by beating the Seaway Kickers, who handed North Dundas their second loss on Aug. 8. North Dundas won this one 2-0 on a pair of goals by Crook.

Manthey got the shutout in net.

With that the season is officially over for the North Dundas U18s, but with a final placing of first in the league, they have to be pleased with the way things turned out.

Cedar Glen scramble and ladies night Two teams tied at the Tuesday Night Scramble on Aug. 20; the duos of Dave Bird and Pete Brown and Andrew Byvelds and Byron Hunt both had a low net of 25 on the night. Rick and Kurtis Barkley won skins with 3 on 1, and Wayde Roles and Sam Locke won 2 on 6.

Ladies Night As well as having the closest to the pin on hole nine, Sue McIntosh also had the low gross in class A, with a 44. Shelia Bush had low net of 36.

In class B, Janet Levere had a 46 for the low gross, while Barb Barkley was close behind with a second low gross of 48.

Marie Beckstead had the low net of 30.

Corrie Witteveen and Wendy Casselman topped class C; Witteveen earned the low gross of 50, and Casselman earned the low net of 36. Sue Alexander, class D, got the low gross of 53.

From House League to All-Stars RUSSELLâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; There was a different look to one of the Russell Raider teams at the annual Russell MiniSoccer Tournament this year, both in uniform and make up.  Competing against representative/competitive teams from Russell and the Ottawa area that have trained and played together all summer long, a group of U9 girls from the Russell House League were assembled less than three weeks before the local tournament to see if they had the game to go against these higher level teams; and

compete they did.  With the team forming in such a short time, it was not possible to obtain a set of the traditional red and blue stripe jerseys that make it easy to point out any Russell Raiders team. The girls proudly wore alternate jerseys that displayed the Club logo and the Canadian flag.  Although following a festival format where scores and standings are not kept â&#x20AC;&#x153;officiallyâ&#x20AC;?, the girls, parents and friends couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help but keep track of the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performance of two

wins, one tie and one loss, scoring 11 goals while giving up just three.  The lone loss, a 2-1 defeat against the Ottawa Internationals, was the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first game playing together and was a hard fought battle that was decided by a late goal by the visiting team.  Thereafter, the girls experience and confidence playing at this advanced level caught up to their enthusiasm and determination, and anyone looking on would not have guessed this team was playing together for the first time after only

eight practices.  Upon conclusion of each game, the opposing teams would select a â&#x20AC;&#x153;player of the gameâ&#x20AC;?, with Carleigh Barwick, Isabelle Ouelette, Kristin Huisman, and Claudia Turpin each earning that distinction.  All 12 Raiders players represented their respective house league teams and coaches to the best of their abilities, with their performance serving as a testament to the quality of players that can be developed by the Russell Soccer Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house league program and its coaches.

Taking on the best

The Russell Raiders U9 team was comprised of house league players and had only three weeks to get ready for the annual Russell tournament. The team did very well finishing with a 2-1-1 record. Senior Games end as success for region Erin Chambers Special to The Sports Pages CORNWALLâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;The 55+ Eastern Regional Games ended with a resounding success on Aug. 20, as George Baker, chair of the games, expressed. Along with over 60 convenors, volunteers, spectators and organizers, over 400 participants took part in the 12th annual games.

A closing banquet concluded the fun and games with over 470 gathered at the Cornwall Civic Centre.

Baker continued by saying that the banquet was not a celebration of the OSGA, the regions or the districts, but of

everyone who had made the time, effort and money to be a part of that day. He thanked many municipalities and local businesses, as well as the Ontario Trillium Foundation for all of their grants.

A few of the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s politicians came to speak as well, including S.D.&G. MPP Jim McDonell, S.D.&G. MP Guy Lauzon, Cornwallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Deputy Mayor Denis Carr and South Stormont Mayor Brian McGillis. They congratulated the attendants and their support of achieving an active lifestyle.

Some of the many victories our area achieved include

the gold medals won in the Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 55+ and 65+ Singles Bowling, by Jacques Gauthier and Jim Farbar, and the Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 55+ Singles Bowling by Irene Cadieux.

Marie Beckstead and Alice Cooper also won gold in Team Bowling, and Norm McDonald and J-P Chollette earned the gold in Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Darts. In 75+ Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and 55+ Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tennis, our area achieved first, second and third place spots. Murray MacLeod and Mike Cadieux took gold in Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 55+ Pickleball, Jim Brown and Bernard ParĂŠ won bronze in the event. Joanne MacLeod and Sue Forget won silver in Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 55+ Pickleball.

MR6 Raiders edged by Lynwood John Hilborn Special to The Sports Pages RUSSELLâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; The Russell Raiders MR6 team had their work cut out for them on Aug 21 as they faced Lynwood United in Ottawa. The team played hard, but fell 4-1. Due to scheduling conflicts with many of the Russell players, the team was only able to start the game with seven players on the field. Being undermanned, the Raiders spent a majority of the first half playing defense.

Some sharp play from Jose Da Silva and the Russell offense pairing were about to provide for a few challenges, but the Lynwood counter attack proved to be too much for them. The first goal against Russell came at the fourminute mark when the keeper made a challenge for the ball in the 30-yard box and had the ball slowly dribble past him into the open goal.

After the goal, Russell was able to step up their game and work their way around the Lynwood defense. The fresh legs and extra body on the opposing

team would still hamper the Raiders progress as they were about to score another goal in the 22nd minute after a corner kick was not cleared from the box.

After this goal, the Raiders found the stride they were looking for and were able to dominate the play. They controlled the ball throughout the midfield, creating a lot of chances. This strong play would continue for the rest of the half.

The beginning of the second half is where the Raiders shone brightest by creating many scoring opportunities. The best shot of the game made it past the United keeper in the 49th minute but it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to beat the post. Russell continued to press and a minute later, finally found the back of the net with a beautifully headed goal by Mattias Buhler off of a cross from the right wing by Jamie Beaudin.

Russell continued this strong play for the majority of the second half. However the team lost steam when a misplay by their keeper

resulted in a free kick just outside the box in the 66th minute. The resulting kick was a screamer, just making it in off the fingertips of the keeper.

The Raiders regrouped and continued to play hard, but the fatigue of the game began to show, with quality chances becoming fewer. The final nail in the coffin came in the 89th minute with Lynwood scoring another insurance goal off a mistimed challenge.

The Raiders remain sixth in their table with 23 points.

They wrap up their season tonight, Aug. 28, in Ottawa against the Spitfires.

Rest of the Raiders MR3 The MR3 Raiders took another step towards a league title with a 7-1 win over the Lynwood Barrhaven Bulls on Aug. 21 in Russell. Michael Cooney led the way with four goals for the team. Phillip Proper had two goals and Devon Hakvoort the other. Tonight, Aug. 28, they can clinch their league title with a win over the Ottawa Raiders Blue or losses by Gloucester and Ottawa. Kickoff is set

for 8:30 p.m.

OT3 The OT3 Raiders held on for a 2-2 draw against the Ottawa Internationals on Aug. 23 at the Russell Community Sport Club. Â Jumping out to an uncharacteristic two-goal lead, the home team was unable to withstand a concerted push by the Internationals in the secondhalf, conceding two goals while lacking the final finishing touch on several good scoring opportunities. Â The team wraps up its season with three more home games and hopes to climb up a few spots in the league ladder before the season concludes. Last night, they hosted Capital United and on Aug. 30 they welcome Inter Milan for a 7 p.m. start.

WR1 (A) It was a tough loss for the WR1 (A) Raiders who fell 5-0 to OSU on Aug. 19 in Russell. The team looked to rebound on Aug. 26 when the visited Perth. They will conclude their season on Sept. 2 with a trip to Ottawa to face OSU.

Fore St. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s church

The first St. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Golf Tournament took place at the Metcalfe Golf Course Aug. 23. The tournament was a fundraiser with proceeds going to the building and repairing of the St. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s church in Russell. A barbeque dinner was followed at the church.

There were 22 participants at the event, and organizer Bill McInnis was pleased with the turnout. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always good,â&#x20AC;? McInnis said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sometimes you have to take what you get.â&#x20AC;?

While there was no fundraising goal, there were many special competitions, including putting, chipping, and a hole-in-one challenge. One of them came with the opportunity to win $5,000 of Foodland groceries in Russell.

One of the games also included the Marshmallow Fundraiser, where a golfer would pay $1 per marshmallow, or $5 for seven, and try to put them into numbered holes. The numbers corresponded with how many raffle tickets would be won, which would go into a draw to win a new golf set.

McInnis also added that they hoped to make this a regular event at the course. Here, one of the participants, Dave Straby tees off.

Long Sault gets the go ahead to start construction on splash pad LONG SAULT â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Youngsters in the Long Sault area will have another way to keep cool. South Stormont council awarded the contract to start construction on the splash pad to A.B.C. Recreation Ltd. Of the three tenders received, A.B.C. Recreation met all of the criteria in the RFP and scored the highest grade for design and scope of the project.

The splash pad will be located at the Arnold Bethune Memorial Park.

The overall budget for the project is $254,100 but could be reduced based on in-kind labour and equipment donations. The contract for A.B.C. Recreation

is for $148,805. The township plans on acting as general contractor and will use the expertise and inkind labour and equipment offered by local contractors.

Kevin Amelotte, Coordinator of Events and Programs for South Stormont, said work should start on the project mid-September and be completed on or before Nov. 15. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They will be firing up the system to make sure itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fully functional before winterizing it,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Then, in the spring, the company will return to get it ready for the 2014 summer season.

Cherished grandmother to Emily and Sarahlynn Deschamps and Lisa and Erin Legue, Megan and Thomas McMahon. Obituary

Irene Heerkens A resident of the Chesterville area Irene Heerkens passed away peacefully at the Garden Villa in Chesterville on Thursday, August 15, 2013. She was 81.

Irene was born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, on November 14, 1931 to her parents Jacobus and Ariena Hekelaar (nee Roos). On March 10, 1954 she married the love of her life, Cornelius â&#x20AC;&#x153;Coryâ&#x20AC;? Heerkens and started a honeymoon trip that lead to their arrival in Canada on April 2, 1954. The honeymoon never ended. After immigrating through Pier 21 in Halifax they arrived in Tillsonburg with 50 cents in their pockets and 2 suitcases of clothes. Irene worked DORQJVLGH &RU\ LQ WKH WREDFFR Ă&#x20AC; HOGV LQ 7LOOVRQEXUJ the textile plant in Lindsay and as a farmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife when they purchased a farm south of Chesterville in 1959. They eventually became very proud citizens of Canada and they raised their 3 children on the farm which Irene lived on until a short time before her death.

After they stopped farming Irene went to work at the pottery factory in Ingleside, then at Caldwell Linen 0LOOV LQ ,URTXRLV DQG VKH Ă&#x20AC; QLVKHG KHU ZRUNLQJ FDUHHU DW Winchester Cheese.

Irene loved to cook for her family which her family truly appreciated and she was an avid bingo player. She also enjoyed going to yard sales, garage sales and Ă HD PDUNHWV ZLWKLQ D PLOH UDGLXV RI KHU KRPH +HU nickname â&#x20AC;&#x153;road runnerâ&#x20AC;? was well suited to her. Weagant Farm Supplies marks 60th anniversary WINCHESTER â&#x20AC;&#x201D; It started with a single Minneapolis Moline tractor out back at Fred and Anita Weagantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s general store in South Mountain, where the proprietors began salting their country-flavoured inventory of hardware and groceries with some farm equipment in the early 1950s.

The move spawned todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trio of Weagant family equipment outlets, including the flagship Winchester location â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Weagant Farm Supplies Limited â&#x20AC;&#x201D; site of the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 60th anniversary celebration this month. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I can still recall when that first tractor arrived in a railway boxcar,â&#x20AC;? says Bob Weagant who was born in that same retail building where his parents worked and lived. He also remembers the ensuing questions from his mother to his father about how they might pay for the unsold machine that the late Fred Weagant â&#x20AC;&#x201D;Â itching to become more than a regular storekeeper â&#x20AC;&#x201D; had picked up during a special trip to the Retail Farm Equipment Dealers Association Show in Toronto. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But lo and behold, they managed to sell it.â&#x20AC;?

Not long afterward, they added the venerable Cockshutt line to the business in 1953 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; truly begin-

ning the enterprise now marking its diamond anniversary in Winchester.

A driveshed behind the old store was pressed into service as the dealership shop, where Fred Weagant already ran a successful sideline converting wagon wheels to modern wheels with tires.

The operation officially incorporated in 1971.

Sales grew through the years, as did the size and complexity of the machinery. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We set a sales record in 1992, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve beaten it every year since then,â&#x20AC;? says Bob Weagant, Winchester store manager, when asked about particular achievements in the last 60 years.

Machinery nameplates have also shifted markedly through the years.

The current New Holland flag has flown above the store since 1993, although the brand was originally added to the lineup in the early days, right after Cockshutt. But during the 1960s, the latter company and Oliver were acquired by the White Motor Company Oliver. In the 1980s, again after a series of manufacturer buyouts, Weagant sold Fiat-built tractors under the Hesston brand name. The New Holland name assumed its current role at the dealership after Fiat bought the Ford-New Holland

Corporation.

Despite industry turmoil, the Weagant family effectively conducted business and expanded and became more versatile.

Bob Weagant and his brother-inlaw, Dave Black, joined the dealership in 1970 and 1974, respectively. Two years later, the family placed the White line at the newly constructed Winchester facility on County Rd. 43, while the New Holland line continued at South Mountain under Blackâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s direction until 1988, when the original store site was closed and business operations merged in Winchester.

At the cusp of another expansion, younger brother Laird Weagant joined the business in 1980, becoming manager of Weagant Farm Suppliesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Brockville location, which opened in 1983 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; 30 years ago this year â&#x20AC;&#x201D;Â with Kubota, Kawasaki, and several short lines.

Beyond the Weagant brothers and David Black, who retired five years ago, a third generation of ownership is also involved with the enterprise: Stacey Weagant, Human Resources and Finance, Julie Baker, Office Manager, and Scott Weagant, Manager of Topline Trailer & Equipment Sales, third and youngest dealership in the Weagant fleet. Fred Weagant passed away a decade ago, just missing the 50th anniversary by a couple of weeks.

The firm â&#x20AC;&#x201D; known simply as Weagantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s by many in the area â&#x20AC;&#x201D;Â currently employs a workforce of 67.

Several have worked for the company over 25 years: Ault VanBokhorst, Elwood Giroux, Joe Vasey, Beth Winters, Pat Byvelds, Dale Countryman and Gary VanHoof.

SD remade WILLIAMSBURG â&#x20AC;&#x201C; South Dundas recently underwent a name change from the Township of South Dundas to the Municipality of South Dundas and this week the office will be relocating to the old Morrisburg high school, now aptly named the South Dundas Municipal Centre.

Council has also discussed new signs announcing entry into the municipality and various hamlets, and now are enhancing their logo.

The recommended option Aug. 13 was to move the words South Dundas to the bottom of the logo and to change the colours to blue and white, adopting both a negative and positive version.

Council approved the changes, paving the way for the completion of the Corporate Identity Toolkit.

The Toolkit is a way to identify the corporation of the municipality and covers services, infrastructure and facilities offered or maintained by the municipality geared for local residents and businesses.

Summer reading program has most successful year yet

The club won the prestigious Bill Skelly Award from Cystic Fibrosis Canada for the best District Cystic Fibrosis Project - Kaiden’s Classic Golf Tournament and was runner -up out of 13 nominated nationally for the Diane Rogers Kin Pride Award Russell.

The club was also acknowledged for having achieved eight Maple Leaf Award of Distinction awards (the most in the country); the Communication Excellence Award of which only seven are

awarded nationally, the Boake Efficiency Award, the Ken Pierce Membership Award, the Outstanding Club Award (one of seven clubs nationally) and its efforts for Kaiden’s Care Kits.

Russell Kin President Doug Anthony also spoke in the finals of the national public speaking competition.

The Kaiden’s Classic Golf Tournament will take place this year on Sept. 13 at Anderson Links.

Still in its infancy, the Russell Kin Club continues to grow and is looking forward to serving the Township of Russell for decades to come.

RUSSELL — With more than 10,000 books circulating in July alone at the Russell and Embrun Libraries, the TD Summer reading program has come to end for another year.

The TDSR Club included 178 girls and 120 boys reading books of all genres over the summer months and its success is based on the participants and from support from the Friends of the Library Group noted Claire Dionne, Chief Executive Officer of the libraries at the closing ceremonies on Aug. 26.

Each participant of the program, after reading 10 books, was allowed to enter their name in a draw for an iPad, donated by the Friends. A few who were present had entered their names quite a few a One winner from each branch was selected by draw. The winner from Embrun was Nikki Legault, and Russell’s winner was Amy Smith.

Unfortunately neither was present to receive their iPads.

Over the summer, the libraries had approximately 500 children participating in other library activities such as storytime.

The branches also held a Lego competition with over 70 designs being entered. These names were also placed in a draw for a knapsack and gift card. The Russell branch winner was William Hamelin and Embrun was Sebastian Morin.

Picking up the pieces Russell Township’s newly constituted Trees for Tomorrow committee hopes to plant 10,000 trees a year on municipal and private lands.

It’s ambitious… but attainable.

There are agencies and programs such as South Nation Conservation and Trees Ontario to help reach that goal.

In fact, the committee already proved it can be done, planting 10,000 trees so far this year under two separate programs at the township landfill.

Members hope to get back to the dump and plant another five to seven acres.

But even if the goal is achieved longterm, committee members say we’re still losing more trees every year than can readily be replaced.

“You hear the chainsaws running every day in Russell,” says long-time activist Cindy Saucier, vice-president of Trees for Tomorrow and a member of the Russell Environmental Advisory Committee. T for T reports to council through the REAC. Saucier was speaking last Thursday at the committee’s first formal meeting since being officially struck late in June. At that time, a nine-member board of directors was elected with Councillor Eric Bazinet as president, and vision, mission statement and terms of reference were drawn up.

The vision is to “Establish roots of a healthy community by planting more trees”; the mission statement is “Planting trees and ideas for a sustainable future.”

Under terms of reference, the T for T mandate is outlined as coordinating tree planting projects, networking with schools, businesses, land owners and other groups, recommending action to REAC and council, promoting the benefits of trees and necessity to increase

forest cover, locating available land on which to plant trees, and representing community concerns in two official languages.

The township’s depleting tree cover is cause for anguish among committee members. Cover stands at 12 per cent of our surface area, way below the minimum level considered adequate for sufficient shade, habitat, wind breaking, and carbon dioxide reduction.

While it keeps its criticism to a minimum – preferring a positive approach —Trees for Tomorrow faults developers, the agricultural industry and Hydro One for the current state of affairs.

Bazinet said there’s not likely to be a restrictive municipal tree-cutting bylaw any time soon and the focus will remain on replacing what’s lost. What the councillor didn’t spell out but what is abundantly clear is that no such bylaw will be enacted because it would impede residential development and agricultural expansion, the township’s two economic mainstays.

While the committee understands the demand for new housing and the drive by farmers to “make hay while the sun shines” by clearing scrub land for more corn and soybeans, it’s much less lenient with Hydro One. Saucier insists the provincial utility goes way further than necessary in keeping trees trimmed along its power lines, claiming that it “decimated” a section of the fitness trail where it crosses Russell Village. She said Hydro unnecessarily removed entire trees and that weeds have filled in both sides of the pathway.

One solution, committee members agreed, is to replant the area with lowlying shrubs producing edible berries

that won’t require cutting in the future because they won’t grow as tall as the power lines.

Members decided Hydro needs to be educated as to the value of trees and in keeping pruning to a minimum; they plan to invite utility officials to an information and education event to be organized in connection with National Tree Day Sept. 25.

While T for T already has many supporters, the committee wants to enlist even greater buy-in from the community through such programs as persuading residents to save seeds from their fruit and nut trees for planting in other locations.

Other priorities include planting sections of the trail, more trees on private land in partnership with the owners, getting more trees into municipal parks, windbreaks along township roads and buffers along watercourses, planting at sewage lagoons to help with odour control, and raising the T for T profile.

“We need to let residents know we exist and would like to be advised before trees come down,” said committee member Gilles Gratton.

While Russell needs at minimum an urban tree bylaw to protect old growth, ratepayers can feel relieved to know that, in the meantime, Trees for Tomorrow is trying to match the loss tree for tree.

Letters To The Editor Citizen group responds to possible landfill closure To Editor: At the Township of Russell Council meeting on Aug. 19 Councillor Craig Cullen called for immediate closure of the Russell Township landfill on St. Catherine Road.

Russell Township recently had to purchase surrounding land at a cost of $750,000 due to contamination from the landfill. Cullen explained the Ministry of the Environment could shut the landfill down at any time.

The Township has received an offer from Lafleche Environmental Inc., near Moose Creek, to accept future Russell waste.

Council instructed their staff to review the proposal and provide their recommenda-

tion at the next meeting.

The Citizens' Environmental Stewardship Association - East of Ottawa (CESA-EO formally Dump the Dump Now) is extremely concerned about pollution of surrounding farmland and calls for the closure of the Russell municipal landfill.

Our independent research agrees that the municipal landfill should never have been placed where it is— directly above the VarsWinchester esker. It is that very esker that holds the aquifer upon which so many Eastern Ontario communities depend for their water. It is that aquifer which CESA-EO is trying to protect.

The 155th Russell Fair will officially open on Wed. Sept. 4 with the opening ceremony at the arena, with a special tribute to past presidents.

The ribbon cutting event is open to the public and begins at 7 p.m. Sheldrick says that this year’s fair will proudly stay with its tradition to showcase its agricultural heritage and offer fantastic entertainment all weekend long.

“As a non-profit organization, we are extremely grateful for the support and contributions of many volunteers, sponsors, individuals, companies, service and community groups, governments, and all the visitors to our Fair.

Together, you help us to host a successful Fair weekend.”

Sheldrick recommends that potential fairgoers click through the pages of the Fair ’s website (www.russellfair.com ) to

discover the many attractions it has to offer, stating “There is truly something for everyone.”

The Fair also has a Facebook page that can be liked for updates.

The big name Friday night concert with multiple Juno winner Sam Roberts Band and Jane’s Party will pull in fans from all around, and although Sheldrick does not know their music well, looks forward to hearing them. “Ticket prices are lower this year, so we hope to have a sold-out show.”

Entertainment will also include musician The Rain Man (Donnie Leafloor), who, Sheldrick notes, plays at the Canadian Tire Centre after the Ottawa Senators play. Leafloor is one of the entertainers that Sheldrick is looking forward to seeing along with the Flying Fools High Dive Show.

In his message, Sheldrick would like congratulate two of the Fair Board members Ina Henry and Judy McFaul.

“These ladies have both been recently awarded a prestigious Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. We are proud of their

involvement with our Russell Agricultural Society and thank them for their valuable contribution not only to our organization but to the many organizations they serve.”

Sheldrick also thanks the members of the Executive and Board of Directors for their year-long commitment of decision making, many hours of planning and hard work. “Your efforts set the stage for this annual fall tradition that is a great ritual with people from the country and the city.”

After visiting different fairs within the district, Sheldrick says that he has learned a lot and seen some great ideas that could be shared. May of the fairs will have representatives present at the opening ceremonies.

Fair industry receives leadership from CAFE and OAAS Pamela Pearson Russell News Editor The Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions (CAFE) is a non-profit organization established in 1924 to represent a broad spectrum of fairs from small community rural fairs, such as Russell, to large exhibitions such as the Canadian National Exhibition which is celebrating 135 years since it first opened its gates in 1879.

Membership includes provincial associations that represent agricultural societies from across the nation, like the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies (OAAS), industry service providers and affiliate associations who have a direct interest and link with the Canadian fair industry. The CAFE is funded primarily by its members.

The OAAS is made up of 15 districts, which “through promotion, communication and educational activities provides leadership to its members.”

The Russell Agricultural Society (RAS) belongs to District 1 with Carp, Richmond, Spencerville, Shawville and Metcalfe.

All in all, the CAFE is there to provide leadership in the growth and stability industry and to foster its stability and wellbeing, according to the CAFE mission statement.

In supporting those members, CAFE holds a conference and general meeting in a different locality each year.

The Ottawa Valley's Fairs will be hosting the three-day conference this year at the Delta City Ottawa in November. A variety of sessions and speakers are planned, including closing keynote speaker, General

Rick Hillier, Former Chief of the Defence Staff for Canadian Forces, who will speak on Leadership in Tough Times at the Canadian Experimental Farm and Museum.

A trade show has also been organized in partnership with the Ottawa Valley CAFE committee which includes Judy McFaul of Russell. McFaul is the Agricultural Director for District 1 of the OAAS, along with Homecraft Director Cheryl Sullivan, of Metcalfe.

Also on the committee is RAS director Theresa Wever and Metcalfe Agricultural Society Administrator Meredith Brophy, who has been past president of the OAAS. McFaul was nominated for an OAAS director position and accepted because she felt it was time to move on to new challenges and to share her experience from the RAS to help other societies.

McFaul took on the reins as President of the RAS in 2006-07 after spending a number of years on a variety of committees. She began her RAS career when Mike Bols asked her to help with the cattle committee — her background is in showing and judging heavy horses.

McFaul is one of the founders of the RAS-sponsored Ladies Night and was also the driver behind getting the demolition derby to the Fair in 2006 after seeing it at the Merrickville Fair.

But McFaul has not left completely. She can still be found behind the scenes organizing the Agri-Village with committee members Suzanne Perras Campbell, Beth Ruiter, Wendy Achtereekte, Lois James, Lorraine Robinson and Debi

Sponsorships plays an important role

Supporting our agricultural fairs Pamela Pearson Russell News Editor Agricultural fairs have been celebrating local agriculture for at least 100 years in many of Ontario’s regions, and ours is no different. Currently 220 agricultural societies fall under the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies.

Traditionally, fairs served to demonstrate a farmer’s successes, offer a showcase for young men and women to demonstrate their skills in search of a mate, and a venue for manufacturers to showcase their wares. But with changes in technology and society, the agricultural landscape, much like the rest of our economy, has changed the fair. They still have a “let’s see who is best” component among the farmers, and there are goods to sell, but they have had to add unrelated events and morph into multiday entertainment platforms with whirring midway rides, fast-talking game barkers, greasy food, concert nights and demolition derbys in order to appeal to varied audience interests.

Communities whose economies were once dependent on the business provided by the farmers outside their limits have changed too, and many fairgoers have no connection to the land and simply see the fair as a competing event for the family’s entertainment budget. The pressures on the fair to make themselves relevant – drawing larger crowds to justify costs, much like industries anywhere – means that they must also go big to be efficient

This annual effort cannot succeed without a lot of hard-working directors and other volunteers. Without these behind-the -scenes people, the tradition of an agricultural fair would not have endured, for as long as it has – keeping its mandate to promote agriculture and a rural way of life alive. The adult and youth participants will prepare their livestock for shows and judging, as the fair is the culmination of a year of working with their animals, learning about nutrition, care, and responsibility.

Others are watching their crops and trying to find and take the best examples for judging. Winning these modest events can lead to the major regional and national fairs. This fair business is serious business to many.

But the 2011 Canadian census on agriculture shows the numbers are declining for those entering the farming and agriculture career paths. Farm operators under age 35 represented only 8.2 per cent of the total in the 2011 census, a decrease from 9.1 per cent in 2006. Yet population growth is speeding up and technology along with it to meet the increased demands on food production, much of which is processed and unrelated to the crops grown on the local fields.

Our future, however, remains tied to their interest in this occupation and the trials and rewards that go with it in support of our economy at so many levels. So it is important that we all go out and support them. See you at the fair.

Every year, the Russell Fair attracts over 12,000 visitors, making this event a premier tourist driver in this area.

The Russell Agricultural Society, a non-profit organization, offers plenty of excitement and entertainment throughout the year from supporting Ladies Night to this past July’s Truck Pull and Rodeo.

But the big event is the annual fair which has been running for 155 years now

and couldn’t do so without sponsorship.

The Society is extremely grateful for the support and contributions of many volunteers, sponsors, individuals, companies, service and community groups, governments, and all the visitors to our Fair.

Together, they help the Society to host a fantastic weekend.

The Society states that because of their flexible sponsorship program, it allows them to work with

the sponsors and groups “to ensure that their support of the Fair provides value for their businesses and organizations. All sponsors receive visibility recognition for their contributions of money, products and services, or support for a specific event.”

Horse cutting returns to fair Pamela Pearson Russell News Editor The Fall Cutting Horse Competition will take place on Sat., Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. and Sun., Sept. 8 at 9 a.m. at the Russell Fairgrounds horse ring, located behind the curling club. Due to the downpouring of rain at the 2012 Russell Fair, this much anticipated event was cancelled as conditions were too dangerous for horses and riders alike.

The history of cutting goes back to when ranchers and cowboys needed the skill to remove a cow or calf from a herd for an injury or otherwise.

Eventually competitions arose, and once the animal is â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;cutâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; the challenge is left up to the horse to prevent the cow from returning to the herd of approximately 35.

The rider loosens the reins and places both hands on the saddle horn. The dance between horse and cow begins at a countdown of 2.5 minutes. If a rider's

The show at the Russell Fair is now the largest east of Calgary. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This has become a highly competitive event that carries a heavy winning purse - even more than racing in some circuits.â&#x20AC;? said Kelly.

The ECCHA, headquartered in Russell at Twin Pines Equestrian Centre on Larry Robinson Road, was started in 2008 and now includes members from all over Eastern Ontario, QuĂŠbec, the Maritimes, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Even the owner of Twin Pines, Frank Duguay, has taken up cutting in the past three years after a career with the RCMP Musical Ride. Kelly himself has competed many times at the national and north american levels and is a

qualified trainer and judge, stating that judging has become a passion. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It makes you a better competitor and you get to travel and continually learn about the sport.â&#x20AC;? Kelly plans on attending the next national show to be held in Jackson, Mississippi, in Feb 2014, â&#x20AC;&#x153;which will show the best of the best.â&#x20AC;?

The sport is gaining momentum in Eastern Ontario. Kelly currently has about 20 students he trains and keeps six to eight stalls at Twin Pines, a few who will be competing at the Russell Fair, including Kelly himself.

There will also be a celebrity cutting that Kelly is trying organize for the afternoon of Sept. 7. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am still looking for a sponsor for the event and all the money will go to a local charity. I have a few locals lined up like Dr. Ruth Irving from Russellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Village Veterinary Clinic, plus a few other surprise guests â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it should be good ,fun.â&#x20AC;? said Kelly.

The show, run by the Shilo Riding club, of Metcalfe and surrounding area, is a volunteer-based riding club started in 1972 by families who wanted to bring together their love of competing and horses. The club ran until 1995, when after a lack of volunteers, was disbanded.

However, in 2004, a few of the club alumni returned to re-start the club for a second time and can be seen practising and competing over the summer months at the

The club recently competed at the Chesterville Fair games on Sat. July 27. Seen right is Danika Menard riding Ausual Streaker who placed first in barrels with a time of 15.519.

Vintage show, shine and tractor pull Vintage and custom cars will be all shined up at the Classic Auto and Bike Show on Sept. 7 and 8.

Vehicles from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and beyond, or before, will be buffed up to showcase their classic lines. Fairgoers will be able to speak to vehicle owners and learn what is involved in buying, restoring and taking care of these vehicles.

The Tractor Pull will be held on Sun. Sept 8.

Registration will start at 9 a.m. at the weigh-in location on the north side of the Fairgrounds.

Spectators will see tractors from the 1940s to modern-day Farm Stock (up to 15,200 lbs.) pull the sled.

Diving show will leave you breathless The high performance Flying Fools High Dive Show will be putting on multiple daredevil shows during the Russell Fair, Sept. 5 to 8.

Consisting of many dynamic, serious and comical dives, with one or more acrobats at a time, the team of five will jump from heights of three, six, nine and 25 metres into a pool only eight meters in diameter and three meters deep.

Milord Entertainment has brought this well-known

show to audiences on a global scale since 1990, when they were first founded.

In 2012, the group brought their flying acrobatic troupe to the Russell Fair, awing spectators with their daring moves and from unfathomable heights. The troop is led by Yves Milord, who has worked with Cirque du Soleil and collaborates with Dragone Entertainment as a consultant.

Milord himself was an acrobatic coach for the pro-

duction City of Dreams, presented in China in 2010 and, for over a decade, has been in charge of the Canadian team for the Acapulco cliff diving championship in Mexico.

The buzz of chainsaw art Located in the South ball diamond from Thursday to Sunday, Chainsaw Artist, Kane Sibley, will put visitors in awe with an exciting performance of wood carving with local wildlife, people and historical narratives, such as the griffin above. Sibley studied Fine Art at Fanshawe College in London Ont. For four years, Sibley has been wood sculpting using mainly chainsaws, with a focus on speed carving. This event should be visually stimulating and interactive for the observer from start to finish.

Friday and Saturday weren’t the only entertainment filled days for Fairgoers.

Sunday started off with a Giant Tiger pancake breakfast served by the Knights of Columbus, far left, and musical entertainment by local band The Front End with Jim Cochrane, Doug Shorkey, Scott Tomlinson and Ron Guilbault. The band was followed by the last of the high-flying acrobat shows.

The Saturday night derby, always a favourite, was a mud-flinging event last year after a cold day of wind and rain, but people still filled the stands.

Russell’s 5 Cyclone Air Cadet Squadron gave flying demonstrations over the weekend at the Agri-Village, located in the curling club.

The RAS held their annual Back to School dance, which runs in conjuction with the Fair year each.

In 1999, this group of teens enjoyed dancing the night away to the Village Peoplesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; YMCA. The event, a fundraiser, raised $336 with 112 youth in attendance.

Running the show

President of the 2009 Russell Agricultural Fair was Theresa Wever who has continued to volunteer on different committees. Weverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s husband Gerry also served as president in 2003 and the couple were awarded the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies Service Diploma in 2011.
