elcome to the Winter 2018 edition of The Cheadle College’s magazine ‘College Life’. Our intention is to capture some of the exciting events that have happened at The Cheadle College and to celebrate the achievements of our students and staff.

The theme of this issue is very much Cheadle/ Marple College’s past, present and future. In terms of ‘past’ we are always keen to celebrate the achievements of former students, and just before Christmas we gathered at the Cheshire Banqueting Centre to pay tribute to the achievements of the class of 2017.

This edition also highlights the endeavours of current students. The college is always conscious of the need to bring the curriculum to life, as reflected in the numerous trips and visits that occur every year.

In terms of ‘future’ we are happy to announce an exciting collaboration with Manchester City Football Club. From September 2018 students will gain a valuable qualification in sport with the opportunity to access high quality football coaching all delivered at the Cheadle College

by Manchester City staff.

As usual we not only recognised those who had achieved highly in the academic field but also those students who had contributed significantly to the college community.

Former students like to keep in touch with their teachers and we were extremely pleased to note the continuing progress of Yasmin Saeed, who at the age of 20 is making huge progress as a female referee, recently officiating in an under 15’s football international.

PUBLIC SERVICES STUDENTS VISIT LONDON

From The Houses of Parliament to Buckingham Palace. Sixteen Public Services students from Cheadle and Marple College embark on what will now become an annual trip to the capital.

S

o much was packed into the three days that the train journey home was very quiet. First stop was the Houses of Parliament where local MP Mary Robinson led a debate all about tuition fees with the students in one of the meeting rooms.

There was some professional heckling expected as well as some ‘here, heres’ mirroring the experience observed in the Commons from the gallery.

Some students were quite excited to be on live TV! The day developed with a visit to look at the MOD (Ministry of Defence) and finished with dinner in TGI Fridays where much food was eaten.

Day two began on a full English and took in HMS Belfast - it got more claustrophobic the further down the ladders they climbed although two teachers had to rest by the shore as things got too rocky. The Tower of London was visited and security surrounding the Crown Jewels was noted.

A noodle or sandwich lunch followed before it was off to 10 Downing Street where we observed security checks in action, swiftly followed by Changing of the Guard with all its pomp.

A quick walk through St Jame’s Park, past Nelson’s Column to Buckingham Palace followed, and the flag told us the Queen was at home. There was just time for a few more photos before we had to make our way back for our bags and then home.

There were so many ‘best bits’. The students were exemplary, well behaved and a credit to the college. For many it was their first trip to London, for some it was their first trip away - fears were faced, friendships were made and some will not bring so much luggage next time!

The evening finished with some free time on Oxford Street, MacDonald’s and football (for those who wanted to watch). The final day was packed again.

The Imperial War Museum brought home both the First and Second WW with a hasty walk to the London Eye where we were fast tracked into our own pod for a birds eye view of London.

PLAY AND STUDY WITH US!

Exciting times are ahead for prospective sports students at The Cheadle College.

The Cheadle College is embarking upon an exciting new Level Three Sports curriculum from September 2018.

For those students interested in pursuing a career in sport and football, The Cheadle College has entered in to a partnership agreement with Manchester City Football Club’s foundation, City in the Community (CITC) to deliver and coach the rising stars of the future.

Lisa McKay, City in the Community Education Manager said:

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport will not only give students the opportunity to be coached by CITC’s professionals, but also provide a variety of enhanced opportunities including the chance to take part in a volunteering programme at the Etihad, an overseas tour and access to guest speakers from the club.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for 16-18 year olds within the local area to continue their education after leaving school whilst taking part in an excellent football curriculum.”

“We are delighted to be partnering with The Cheadle College to offer an innovative BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma Sport programme.”

“We look forward to welcoming new students to The Cheadle College in the very near future.”

Innovative Interns Students on an internship scheme at Stepping Hill Hospital have celebrated a successful year’s work.

Ten interns with disabilities have worked in a variety of roles across the hospital, including in the cafes, shops, patient records department and training centre.

The internship project is a joint scheme between Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Stepping Hill Hospital, The Cheadle

and Marple College Network and Pure Innovations, a charity which helps disabled people live more independent lives.

The scheme is designed to give interns confidence and work experience. Several of them are going straight into paid employment following their placement, both at the hospital and elsewhere.

One of these is 18 year old Mark Muskett now working in the maternity café run by hospitality company Host. Mark said, “I really enjoy the job, I’ve learned lots of new skills and made some new friends too. I’d like to thank Host, the hospital, the college and Pure Innovations for giving me this chance.”

Eleven of the new interns have now started at the hospital.

Water Sports Day

At the Helly Hensen Watersports Centre, Salford Quays.

As part of their first practical unit ‘Skills for Water-based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities’ our Level 3 students were required to demonstrate skills in a number of different watersports. We visited Life Leisure in Cheadle to learn the basic skills and techniques for Canoeing and Kayaking.

Using these skills and techniques we then visited The Helly Hansen Watersports Centre, Salford Quays where the students also had the opportunity to take part in sailing and raft building activities as well as canoeing and kayaking.

The students were a credit to both themselves and the college as well as the Public Services course. They excelled on the water and proved themselves to be proficient in the skills and techniques they had learnt.

Heather Whitney: Outstanding Service to Cricket.

H wzat?

Many congratulations to Marple Sixth Form College student Heather Whitney, who has won Derbyshire Cricket’s Outstanding Service to Cricket Award.

The presentation took place at the County Cricket Ground in Derby in September. Heather, a talented cricketer who has only been playing cricket for the last two seasons said after the event. “I am amazed and thrilled with winning this award”.

As well as this fantastic achievement, Heather will be attending the home of English cricket at Lord’s Cricket Ground, in St John’s Wood, London for The national outstanding service to cricket awards.

Sporty Heather is also football captain of the Marple Sixth Form College girl’s team and has been an instrumental part of the team that won the Cheshire Female Fives tournament.

Well done Heather and good luck at the national awards.

The Cheadle College and Marple Sixth Form College celebrated the success of 2017 students at Edgeley Park on the evening of 18th December 2017.

The event was sponsored by ASE Global, Borough Care, Blue Grass Purple Cow Nursery, Distology, Gusto (Cheadle), Little Sports Coaching, Midshire Technology and Mitchell Williams Estates and Lettings.

82 student’s awards were presented on the night to the delight of parents, family, friends, college colleagues and employers. Everybody enjoyed a fantastic evening.

Students at The Cheadle College had some very special guests drop in when they received a surprise visit from the Royal Air Force.

The Griffin helicopter from 60 Squadron Defence helicopter flying school made a dramatic landing on the sports grounds to say thank you for fundraising carried out by pupils studying BTEC Public Services.

The visit took place on a college open day and gave both current and prospective students the opportunity to see the helicopter up close.

The Public Services students have been working closely with the RAF since 2014, raising an amazing £4,000 for children’s hospitals in the Greater Manchester area.

Students were also given the opportunity to try their hands at an inflatable assault course and other activities designed to make the transition from school to college as easy as possible.

Amanda Wilkinson, Head of Public Services course said: “We were very excited by the visit and it took a great deal of planning for it to come to fruition. It is a fitting gesture from the RAF in thanks for all the hard work our students have put in to raise money over the last few years.”

Public Services RAF Present Wrapping Event Following on from the successful sponsored walk & bike ride in September, from which the Public Services students from both colleges raised a very impressive £13,000.

Following on from the successful sponsored walk & bike ride in September, from which the Public Services students from both campuses raised an impressive £13,000, they were able to present a cheque to the Royal Air Force.

The money was used to buy toys and gifts for Christmas for children and young people from Liverpool’s Alder Hey and the Manchester Children’s hospitals.

This meant that the children and young people who had to stay in hospital over the Christmas period would receive a present from Father Christmas (flown in by the RAF) and would know that there were people thinking of them.

The surplus cash was donated to the hospitals to put towards vital equipment.

Present wrapping skills were learnt and demonstrated by both the Cheadle & Marple Public Services students as they had a mammoth wrapping session with the RAF. It was nice for the students to see what sort of gifts their sponsor money had raised.

It was especially nice this year as the nursing staff at the hospitals had supplied, where known, the names of the children who would still be in hospital at Christmas. It gave the personal touch to the gifts being sent.

The Public Services staff had supplied enough chocolate and drinks to keep the students going whist they wrapped the presents and the students supplied the Christmas music.

Congratulations to all involved, we hope to do the same again next year for the 4th consecutive year.

GOAL!

“I think it’s every referee’s dream to be at the top fight.”

The Sport Psychology student formerly played for Manchester United, Crewe Alexandra, Manchester City and Everton before taking up refereeing aged 15 after breaking her pelvis.

Yasmin coaches a group of young female referees in Manchester and was recently assistant referee for England Under-15s v Scotland Under-15s at St George’s Park.

Yasmin said: “I think it’s every referee’s dream to be at the top fight of football, but there has never been a female Premier League referee, although there has been a female assistant referee.”

“This is something I would aspire to do. “The first offside I gave was against England! It was within the rules of the game that I had to give that decision.”

French students visit the international contemporary arts, theatre and film centre ‘HOME’ in Manchester to see the film “Frantz”.

A Drama is set in the aftermath of WWI in Europe, where a young German woman grieves the death of her fiancé in France and meets a mysterious Frenchman who visits her fiancé’s grave to lay flowers.

The film examines truth, lies and the necessity for both characters in a grieving world that makes no sense.

What the students say: “This cinema experience was so enlightening as I was able to see where I could view other French Films in Manchester.

Films are part of the culture of any country so this was a very valuable insight into historical and cultural aspect of the country we are studying.”

- Sophie “I think it will help me to analyse and understand the film for the exam better.”

- Jessica “I discovered a new type of film and a French director. Moreover I started to analyse a movie.”- Francesca “It inspired me to carry on with my French studies.”- Gloria “It helps me a lot because I understood the real meaning of the movie, but it can help me also with my studies.”- Marta “I have a better understanding of French culture and bettered my listening skills.” - Eleanor
