Headteacher’s Message Dear Parent/Students, Welcome to our Summer Newsletter.

It has been another fantastic year at the Chafford, with many, many memorable achievements and events.

I am pleased and proud of the success of students and staff throughout this year, both in students’ academic study and in the broader, wider life of the school.

Our Year 11 students have just finished their Summer examinations and we are all very optimistic about the successes they will have when their results are published in August. We rewarded all their hard work at the Leavers’ BBQ this week and look forward to welcoming them back to a more formal presentation evening in the Autumn.

Our Sports teams in 2013 – 2014 have been successful as follows: 2013 – 2014 

Year 7a and 7b got to the semi-finals of the Havering Rally



Year 8b Netball came second in the Havering Rally



Year 8a Netball won both the Havering Rally and the League



Year 9a Reached the Semi-final of the Havering Semi-Final



Year 9 Football reached semi-final of Havering cup



Year 9 Rugby reached Semi Final of Havering Shield



PGL trip – very successful – every student increased their practical grades due to the activities on this trip.



Rugby Trip to Spain – 6 days, boys played 2 very tough games, and trained each day and led the life of a professional player for a week.



Netball trip to Wiltshire, very successful entering 2 teams, with both teams winning the Netball Festival.



Modupe Shokunbi, Year 10 student, Essex Schools Athletics 100m Junior Girls champion – she represented Essex in the English Schools Championships in July 2013 at Birmingham and came 2nd. – Already this year she has run 12.01, the fastest time in GB for her age group.

The Chafford School are currently competing in the cricket, rounders and athletics competitions for the summer term, with the rounders and athletics competitions in July. Cricket is on-going throughout June and July.

Danielle Nelder – Essex Netball Team Emily Fanning –East Essex Netball Team Evie Koen – National Champion – team event Modupe Shokunbi – Essex Athletics Champion, 2nd England Championships – 100m Our Drama and Music Departments, in collaboration with the local Drama Company, Lightnin’ Drama, put on a fabulous two night performance earlier in the month with over 50 students involved in its production.

Our school entrance hall has been full with the fantastic art work that students have produced and you are welcome to visit to see this before the end of term.

I am pleased to report that our New Year 7 Intake is full for this coming September and we look forward to welcoming them all to life at the Chafford School.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff who work at the school. Everybody has worked hard throughout the year in their various roles to continue to ensure that every student receives a top quality educational experience at the Chafford School, in particular those staff that worked for a number of months to make our Saturday Academy both enjoyable and rewarding.

I would like to thank parents for their support throughout the year. I cannot stress enough the difference that parental support makes in student achievement. We continue to introduce a number of systems at the school to inform and help parents to support their son/daughter in achieving of their very best. I strongly urge all parents to attend Parents’ Evenings throughout the year, to discuss with subject teachers the progress being made.

The Governors of the school continue to work with the Leadership Team on setting the future direction of the school and to ensure that the school continues to have the high standards and expectations that students and parents rightly deserve.

We currently have a Parent vacancy on the Governing Body which has newly formed this year as a result of us becoming an Academy. Nominations and voting for this vacancy will take place in September.

Finally, can I, on behalf of all of the Staff, Students and Governors thank Mr Brian Teeley for his long service to the school. Mr Teeley is retiring at the end of term after 26 years long and dedicated service to the school. We wish him well in his retirement.

Coca Cola Factory: On 10th of June some Year 10 went on a Business Studies trip to the Coca-Cola factory in Edmonton, North London.

Firstly, we watched a short video about the creator (Dr John Pemberton) and creation of Coca-Cola. Secondly, we went into another room and watched a presentation about the production methods that the Coca-Cola factory uses.

We then went on to take a tour of the factory, seeing the production lines and warehouse which was in complete

darkness and was fully automated. Last of all, we returned to the conference room and split into four mini groups. We then were given a challenge to create a drink based on a movie of our choice.

The trip enabled us to see flow line production methods that we learnt about in class and enabled us to ask questions about the production process.

Safe Drive Stay Alive

Student Trip Review: On the 16th May 2014 the year 7 and 8 girls went on an adventure to Shropshire. We played lots and lots of netball and got to do some really fun activities. The food there was sooo scrummy and the tuck shop was even better….! Our

rooms were amazing; big, comfy and clean. On the Saturday all teams played Netball matches against other teams there and performed really well, this was fun however the activities were even better, we got to do body zorbing, high ropes , low ropes, tunnelling

and many more. On the Sunday the competition was on, we all really wanted to get into the finals; all teams were fantastic and improved massively. The year 8A & year 7A teams both won their competition being the best there….

Go CHAFFORD!! The year 7A

team beat a team in the final match who they lost to on the Saturday and were very chuffed.

The worst part of our trip was leaving….. , we all had so much fun we wanted to stay!

Boppard Germany Trip Eine Reise nach Boppard

gemacht. Wir sind auch nach Koeln gefahren, um den alten Im April ist eine Gruppe von Dom zu besuchen. Phantasi40 Studenten and 4 Lehrern aland war super und Burg Eltz aus der Chafford Schule nach war sehr beeindrucksvoll. Am Boppard in Deutschland gefah- letzten Abend hatten wir eine ren. Wir haben alle viel Spass tolle Abbschiedsparty, wo wir dort gehabt. Das Wetter war getanzt und gesungen haben. nicht immer so gut aber jeden Es war ein toller Urlaub und Tag haben wir etwas anders wir haben viel ueber das Leben gemacht und dabei vesucht, in Deutschland gelernt. unsere Spachkenntisse zu verbessern. Wir sind mit dem Geschrieben von Studenten Seilbahn gefahren und haben aus der zehnten Klasse. eine Bootsfahrt auf der Rhein

WOW WEEK What a week we had! From 14th to 19th July students were off roll and given the opportunity to experience a range of trips and activities.

Monday started with our sponsored walks day which included a walk to Purfleet via Rainham Marshes, another through Hornchurch Country and a 9 bridges walk encompassing all the Thames crossings from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge.

Tuesday was trips day with visits to France, Colchester

Zoo, London Zoo, The British Museum, the Olympic Park and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Wednesday saw the students back at school for a range of events including exploring theatre, wow science and the hub challenge. Thursday was action packed with students getting to try out a different activity every lessons. These ranged from origami, murder mystery, henna art, making mocktails, football, giant jenga, shadow writing, scrabble, decorating clothes, loom bands and much

much more. Finally Friday was out international experience day with students given the opportunity to learn about different countries, cultures and languages.

Students and staff were all exhausted by the end of the week but it was worth all the hard work as everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experiences on offer. The following pages show a variety of photographs from the trips and other activities.

River Ingrebourne History Havering’s River Ingrebourne has much secret history. The Domesday Book of 1086 records that Havering had a water mill. This was powered by the Ingrebourne but wasn’t actually on the river. Our Saxon ancestors dug a channel about a mile long parallel to the Ingrebourne to build up a head of water for a mill pond at Dovers, just north of Rainham. The channel has been mostly scooped out by gravel digging, but the remains can be

seen on Google Earth just east of La Salette Catholic church and north of A1306 New Road.

The Ingrebourne was the boundary between the royal manor of Havering, on the west bank, and the parishes of South Weald, Upminster and Rainham to the east. Usually, bridges over a boundary river would be the joint responsibility of the communities on either side. But peasants on the royal manor of Havering were exempt from any contribution. As late as 1825, Upminster people threatened to go to law to make Hornchurch pay its share - but they got legal advice telling them they had no chance. That’s why the District Line has a station called Upminster Bridge and not Hornchurch Bridge linking the two places was literally Upminster’s problem. It’s A Wrap!

It was a world record attempt to get into the Guinness Book of records with an international cooking lesson spanning 121 countries around the globe at the same time.

Year 11 Food and Nutrition students took part in the international Food Revolution day event on Friday 16th May at 2pm . It was an event which was the brainchild of chef Jamie Oliver. It was a world record attempt to get into the Guinness Book of records with an international cooking lesson spanning 121 countries around the globe at the same time. Schools from all corners of the world took part, all via live feed to the schools and although final figures have yet to be released, over 1 million students took part. This means

we were successful, and had lots of fun in the process.

Students made rainbow wraps, demonstrated first by Jamie, then each made their own to take home and enjoy .

The photos taken at the event here at the Chafford showed a great time was had taking part. Even staff joined in and made wraps .

The long-term focus of the event was to raise awareness, with diet-related illnesses rising at an alarming rate, it has never been more important to educate people about food and how to cook it. Cooking skills used to be

passed down from generation to generation, but now millions of people lack even the most basic knowledge to make a simple meal from scratch or have simply lost the confidence to try. There is a need to get back to basics: to cook and eat fresh local produce; to share cooking skills and food knowledge; to join forces within communities and get as many people involved as possible. Food Revolution Day was an opportunity to get the world to focus on the importance of keeping cooking skills alive for generations to come
