I have taken the unusual step this year of personally selecting our magazine front cover as I feel it is important that we recognize the historic landmark centenary of Armistice Day bringing an end to World War One. Although not your traditional tinsel and tree cover to me it’s a poignant reminder that despite the ravages of war two sides came together in peace for a few moments at Christmas time. It is important to remember that the peace we now have came at a tremendous cost. We must never take it for granted. Lest we forget.

Looking back the past year has had its usual share of ups and downs including Harry and Megan’s wedding and their forthcoming baby, Prince Charles 70th birthday celebrations, the budget and plenty of political uncertainty. But, 2019 looms ahead as a historic year when the UK officially leaves the EU – I’m sure you’ll agree it will be a relief to finally have the constant Brexit bickering that dominates the headlines behind us as we move into 2019?!

With the team here at the CGA working hard to ensure your financial, insurance and legal affairs are in good order as we head into the New Year, may I welcome you to our Festive edition of the CGA Magazine.

MANX SHEARWATERS RETURN TO UK AFTER 20 YEARS Welsh Islands welcome return to breeding native sea birds

HS Shetland and RSPB Scotland have been working together to promote the myriad ways nature can benefit our health. The ‘Nature Prescriptions’ recognise the benefits of nature on reducing blood pressure, reducing anxiety and increasing happiness as well as attempting to plug the growing disconnection with nature throughout society. Following a successful pilot, the project has now been rolled out to every GP surgery throughout Shetland.

RSPB Scotland have created a leaflet alongside a calendar of seasonal activities using local knowledge in order to help people connect with nature.

The leaflet, which will be handed out at the doctor’s discretion, plans to provide a greater variety of ways to realise the health benefits that nature provides regardless of health condition, confidence or if you are a sociable or more solitary person. Dr Chloe Evans, a GP at Scalloway Health Centre, said: “I want to take part because the project

provides a structured way for patients to access nature as part of a non-drug approach to health problems. The benefits to patients are that it is free, easily accessible, allows increased connection with surroundings which we hope will lead to improved physical and mental health for individuals”.

Karen MacKelvie is a Community Engagement Officer for RSPB Scotland: “There is overwhelming evidence that nature has health benefits for body and mind. Shetland is “stappit foo” of natural wonders. Whenever you open your front door you can hear or see some kind of natural delight – be it a gull or a lapwing calling or the roll of a heathery hill.

However, despite many doctors using the outdoors as a resource to combat illhealth, far fewer recommend the same strategy to their patients. So, we saw an opportunity to design a leaflet that helps doctors describe the health benefits of nature and provides plenty of local ideas to help doctors fire-up their patients’ imaginations and get them outdoors.”

A

British seabird known for its daredevil flying stunts is being monitored for the first time in 20 years on a remote Welsh island. Manx shearwaters, who fly so low that their wingtips almost touch the water, have been counted on Middleholm Island off the Pembrokeshire coast in South Wales by National Trust rangers and volunteer researchers from the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales (WTSWW).

The team used a unique method to count Manx shearwaters, playing audio recordings of their call into their burrows and then listening out for a response. Together with neighbouring Skomer and Skokholm, Pembrokeshire’s islands are home to the world’s largest breeding colonies of the Manx shearwater, with approximately half the global population living there.

Monitoring the Manx shearwater colony is essential for assessing population health and measuring the effects of external factors on population numbers such as climate change.

Forestry Commission promotes Forest Bathing Shinrin-yoku is Japanese for Forest Bathing which, for the Japanese, means to be in a natural environment, specifically in a forest, literally, bathing underneath trees to connect the senses of hearing, sight, touch and taste through the experience of woods. The Forestry Commission is encouraging people to get into forests to experience this phenomenon for themselves. With trails from just one mile to several, the Commission hope to help visitors to refresh their body mind and spirit by immersing themselves within the many forests across the country. MASTERPIECES REUNITED Edward Burne-Jones, one of the last Pre-Raphaelites, is celebrated in major retrospective British exhibition

ate Britain will present the first major Edward BurneJones retrospective in London for more than 40 years. Respected worldwide, Burne-Jones (1833–98) is revered for his otherworldly depictions of beauty inspired by myth, legend and the Bible, as a pioneer of the symbolist movement, and the only Pre-Raphaelite to achieve global recognition in his lifetime. BurneJones rejected Victorian industrial ideals, instead creating an enchanted parallel universe inhabited by beautiful and melancholy beings

Tate Britain will also explore the key role of the decorative arts in Burne-Jones’s career, including his long working relationship with William Morris. Social reformists, both men intended their collaborative work to reach a broad audience.

Unchecked air pollution leads to ill-health Unchecked air pollution across the country will lead to a sharp rise in respiratory diseases and other life-changing health disorders if air pollution goes unchecked

he number of people suffering from respiratory problems and the severity of those already suffering from the various diseases is expected to increase if air pollution in the UK goes unchecked, according to a new report from GlobalData. The prevalence of asthma across the UK sits at nine million, with just under two million in 35 year olds and above.

NICE, (The National Institute for Health Care and Excellence), recently published a set of guidelines related to air pollution and the impact on health. Air pollution can cause, or worsen respiratory conditions including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. According to Public Health England, the total NHS cost due to air pollution could have been up to £150m in 2017, a significant price that will continue to increase if things are left to carry on as they are. Rahael Maladwala, Pharma

Analyst at GlobalData said: “The implementation of the government’s ‘Clean Air Strategy’ shows a concerted effort between the regulatory agency and the government, which can be seen in the commissioning of new ‘ultra-low emission zones’ in North London, which only allow electric cars in the area for certain hours in the day.

“The NHS is under significant stress with factors such as government cuts to funding and an aging population, both playing a major role in this. Therefore, proactive schemes such as the Clean Air Strategy, which can reduce the prevalence of disease, and lessen the amount of people going to the hospital, will play an important role saving GP and NHS time."

Scottish Wildcat The Scottish Wildcat, also known as the Tiger of the Highlands, lives on the very edge of extinction. Loss of habitat, cross-breeding and hunting have all played a part in its rapid decline.

Today it is the UK’s most endangered carnivore; predictions of this wild predator disappearing entirely from the Scottish Highlands are thought to be within a few years. However, the Scottish Natural-Heritage Association and the Scottish Wildcat Conservation Action Group are working together to halt the decimation of this rarely seen creature. by Robert Adam in 1771-78 for Baron Apsley. Known to all as ‘No. 1 London’ because of its position just past the toll-gate into the capital from the West. W

hat is the weekend?” asked Dame Maggie Smith, in her now infamous role as the Dowager Countess in the much lauded TV series Downton Abbey. Indeed, she may well ask, as Edwardian aristocratic life went – weekends in the country were de rigueur, in fact there was little to distinguish between a Tuesday or a Saturday except, perhaps, the number of people at dinner, or the obvious clue of church bells ringing on a Sunday.

corners of the country this gentrified and antiquated way of life goes on, albeit in a slightly more modernised fashion – with electricity, telephones and even the internet.

Ten years ago, in 2008, the National Trust was bequeathed one of its single largest donations since World War Two. Hotelier, business man and philanthropist Richard Broyd generously gifted three hotels from his business, Historic House Hotels, after he had rescued these buildings from near collapse and destitution.

The three properties were, Middlethorpe Hall near York racecourse, Hartwell House a Jacobean and Georgian

property set within 95 acres of glorious land near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire and Bodysgallen Hall, set in 220 acres of wonderful parkland, in North Wales dating back to the 13th century.

Broyd, who made his fortune in the recruitment industry, changed course entirely and moved into the hotel industry, creating Historic House Hotels, after encountering an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in the 1970s, whose theme was: ‘the destruction of the country house’. whilst concurrently providing a vital income to the National Trust.

Broyd and his business, Historic House Hotels, was an original pioneer of the conservation of empty and oversized houses and their conversion into hotels, whilst emphatically retaining the atmosphere of country-house life.

For Broyd his main intention was to protect these properties and by gifting them to the National Trust, he has honoured his promise: under the National Trust Act of 1907 the charity can declare its properties ‘inalienable’ which means that they cannot be sold, ever.

HARTWELL HOUSE History simply cannot get better than the Domesday Book and according to the National Trust, Hartwell House, or an earlier house in its place, was mentioned in this ancient tome.

Today the house, which is Grade I listed and dates from the 17th century, is simply overflowing with historical accounts including its most famous resident, King Louis XVIII the exiled King of France and his court, who spent five years there from 1809, alongside his wife, who sadly died of alcoholism.

Wonderfully, King Louis remained at Hartwell until 1814 when the constitutional document, confirming

his ascension to the throne, was signed in the library. The library where today you can enjoy high tea or a glass of champagne and see and even touch, the desk that King Louis sat at to sign this important document.

One of the unique magical experiences of these buildings is the sheer wealth of genuine antiques present, many of which are originals, which the team at Historic House Hotels have tried to recover over the years. Allowing each guest to touch, breathe and truly take in the authentic history which seeps from every room and artefact, every tree and cornice.

At the front of Hartwell House stands the wonderful equestrian statue of Frederick Prince of Wales who was rescued from an over-grown part of the estate and restored.

Other notable characters in the history of the property include, William Peveral - Hartwell was the seat of William the Conqueror’s son, John Earl of Mortaigne - who succeeded his brother as King of England in 1199, Sir Richard Lee - Lord Chief Justice who later served for a time as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Queen Marie Josephine de Savoie - who joined her King at Hartwell around 1810 and Gustavus IV King of Sweden - who also lived here during the time of Louis XVIII. century notables who have stayed here as new life was breathed into it as a hotel.

These include President Clinton, the Emperor and Empress of Japan, many heads of state, and, in 2013 it was chosen

by The Chancellor and then Bank of England Governor as the venue for the meeting of G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors.

The architecture is also extraordinary - the great hall a masterpiece of English baroque design - most of this room is virtually unchanged since its completion in 1740.

The morning room and library are decorated in the Rococo style, with curvilinear marble chimney pieces. The bookcases in the library are fitted with some of the finest surviving gilt-brass wirework in the country. Further details reveal that Festivals of Peace and Temperance were held in the grounds of Hartwell between 1829 and 1866.

Today these beautiful grounds boast a stunning collection of 18th century pavilions and monuments. Some of these date from the 1730s when a magnificent topiary garden, planted in 1690, was finally brought to completion.

There is the Gothic Tower, a romantic crenellated turret; the Ionic Temple, an elegant exercise in Italianate classicism, flanked by four terms, figures from classical mythology, now returned to their original position after 200 years in another part of the garden. There is the statue of Hercules, the obelisk in the Park meadow and the statues of Zeus and Juno in the gardens behind the arch.

The present bridge over the lake was erected at the end of the 19th century and is the central span of old Kew Bridge, built in the 18th century by James Paine,

but dismantled in 1898 and divided up into lots and sold at auction. The Old Dairy is a relic of the 18th century, as is the Gothic bridge.

The avenue of trees that crosses the Old Court Garden was planted around 1830, while the estate wall was completed in 1855, encrusted with fossils and rare stones from the grounds.

In 1900 a forecourt was created in front of the entrance, ringed by a ha-ha wall to the north. The Rock Walk and cobbled paths were laid out before 1901 and there are trees and plants dating from the Edwardian period.

The Church was built in 1753-6 and is generally recognised as one of the most important buildings of the Gothic Revival.

The glorious Middlethorpe Hall, a beautiful example of a William and Mary House, sat in 20 acres of gardens, parkland and walled kitchen garden

MIDDLETHORPE HALL Middlethorpe Hall was built for Thomas Barlow, a prosperous master cutler who bought the Middlethorpe estate in 1698 as a bid to establish himself as a real country gentleman. It was once the home of the famous diarist, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, who wrote in her diary, ‘Tis a very pritty place...I think there is nothing to be done but to send an immediate note to Mr Harrison to let him know I will be at Middlethorpe with my family Tuesday next’, sent in August 1713.

Middlethorpe Hall is influenced indirectly by the architecture of Sir 18

Christopher Wren, especially his Hampton Court of the 1690s with its horizontal skyline and its pattern of red brick, white sash windows and stone quoins and window surrounds - all features taken up at Middlethorpe.

The handsome north entrance front of seven bays and three full storeys plus a basement is surrounded by a proud stone eagle, the Barlow family crest. BODYSGALLEN HALL Bodysgallen Hall is a 17thth century house that has been skillfully and sympathetically restored by Historic House Hotels since 1980. The building is thought to have begun life as a watchtower for Conwy Castle back in the 13th century to warn of surprise attack.

It was not until late in the Elizabethan era, when it was owned by Richard Mostyn, who served as High Sheriff of Caernarvonshire, that it finally became a glorious family estate and home.

Through marriage the house passed on to the Wynn family and a tablet can be seen on the south-west gable bearing the initials of Robert and his wife Katherine Wynn: ‘1620 R:W:K’.

Nicholas Fogg Ancient and modern conflicts share one premise: a complicated back-story few understand

L

ord Palmerston once said of the Schleswig Holstein Question that only three people had ever understood it: the Prince Consort who was dead: a German professor who’d gone mad thinking about it and he himself, who’d forgotten it. There are many ‘Schleswig Holsteins’ in this world - international conflicts that are so complicated that few grasp their essence, not even the protagonists. To illustrate this let me reach for my Shakespeare.

The central action of Romeo and Juliet is played around the enmity of the warring houses of Montague and Capulet. The origin and nature of the dispute is never revealed. Indeed it may have happened so long ago that its very origin has been forgotten. This is the case with many long-running disputes, whose purpose may seem incomprehensible to the outsider. Such is the case with the vehement hostility between the two main sects of Islam - Sunni and Shi’ite.

This one makes the tensions between Protestant and Catholic in Northern Ireland which merely date from the 17th Century seem like yesterday’s issue. It goes all the way back to the death of the Prophet Muhammad in 632. It’s all

about his spiritual successors. The Sunni believe that it was his friend and adviser, Abu Bakr, who became the first of the Caliphs, or successors of Muhammad.

The Shi’ite descend from a group who considered that Ali bin Abu Talib, the Prophet’s cousin and son-in-law, should be the Caliph. Even the names of the sects reflect the divide. The word Sunnin Arabic, comes from a word meaning ‘one who follows the traditions of the Prophet’. The word Shi’ite is an abbreviation of the term, Shia’t Ali, or ‘the people of Ali’. Of course, there are theological and cultural differences, but the origin of the split is as ancient and as simple as the divide after the death of the Prophet.

often be drawn in. Mercutio intervenes in the affray between Romeo and Tybalt and is himself stabbed to death. Outside intervention in local disputes often leads to disaster: frequently with dire results for the interventionist. Both the interventions of Russia and America and its Allies in Afghanistan proved extremely costly and continues to do so.

The invasion of Iraq led to chaos and the rise of ISIS. The removal of the regime in Libya contributed significantly to the refugee crisis in Europe. Of course, these actions were taken, with the best intentions, just like Mercutio’s fatal decision. A loss of control by the civil authority creates the backdrop for the feud to continue its destructive course.

The Prince can threaten and disperse the protagonists, but the damage has been done. We see a similar loss of control on our own streets and have to ask whether cuts to the forces of community stability do not cost more in economic and social terms than the savings they purportedly purvey. Prince Escalus is not an authoritarian figure. He sees it as his role to protect the common good, which includes peace on the streets.

What was a localised conflict in Syria has drawn in many Mercutios in the form of regional and global powers and jihadist groups. There is no Prince Escalus to hold the line and seek to draw the warring parties together.

So what solution might Romeo and Juliet provide? The answer isn’t all that hopeful. The conflict in the play is resolved by the death of the lovers, which unites the enemies in a spirit of reconciliation and penitence. Sadly, no such spirit seems to prevail in the current conflicts.

Birds flock back for Winter Discover what species may descend in your garden, how far they have travelled and how to support them through winter

very autumn hundreds of thousands of birds converge on the UK from as far afield as Arctic Canada to the west and Siberia to the east. Our coasts, lakes and marshes are internationally important for a range of wildfowl and waders while our woods and farmland draw high numbers of winter thrushes and other songbirds.

Some of these long distance travellers may even make an appearance at your bird table!

It’s incredible to think that just weeks ago some of these birds would have been on their tundra breeding sites in the high Arctic. With 24 hours of daylight

there would have been plenty of time for bird families to find food, while avoiding predators like Arctic foxes, polar bears, or snowy owls. As the days shortened, birds like knot, pink-footed geese and whooper swans would have started their long journey south, passing glaciers and volcanoes, and crossing the ocean.

RSPB Dee Estuary The Dee Estuary hosts thousands of Arctic migrants including dunlins, grey plovers, lapwings and redshanks.

At RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands there’s a visitor centre, a hide and an Iron Age hill fort where you can get elevated views out over the estuary. The RSPB runs winter Raptor Watches from Parkgate, where you can see birds of prey like hen harriers coming down to roost. Finally there’s RSPB Point of Ayr in Wales which also has a hide overlooking the Dee estuary.

At RSPB Mersehead you’ll find flocks of barnacle geese which will have flown in from Svalbard.

With black and white heads similar to the feeding tube that emerges from a barnacle’s shell when it’s underwater, these geese got their name because they were thought to have begun their lives as shellfish!

For a seasonal wildlife treat work your way around the globally important estuary known as The Wash. There’s RSPB Frampton Marsh in Lincolnshire which will be heaving with waders, and RSPB Snettisham in Norfolk, noted for its dawn and dusk pink footed goose flights and mesmerising flocks of knot. Further west along the coast at RSPB Titchwell there’s more excellent birding to be had!

How can you help our winter visitors?

When the ‘Beast from the East’ arrived late last winter much of the natural food supply in the countryside had already been used up. Hungry fieldfares and redwings, thrushes which migrate here from Iceland and Scandinavia, turned up in gardens across the country where food provided by people, especially old apples and pears, gave them a lifeline.

If you plant fruit-bearing trees and shrubs like rowan, hawthorn and crabapple in your garden you may get a visit from these birds in the future. You may even welcome a flock of exotic looking waxwings which come to our shores in winters when berry crops in their native lands in Scandinavia are poor. There are seed-eaters too: bramblings and siskins from the north may join the finches and tits around your bird feeders, so keep them well stocked in chilly weather.

It’s unlikely that you’ll get a Bewick’s swan or a knot on your lawn, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do your bit to support these winter wanderers. It’s vital that the areas these birds need remain protected: they’re not able to find other places to stay.

As the UK leaves the EU, we need to make sure that these special places still have all the high levels of environmental protection required to prevent development and disturbance, for example. Neil Woodford shares his view of UK economics Investment is a rational analysis of business acumen, global markets and personal risk - but is the future for the UK bright?

N

eil Woodford, the investment fund manager, who has long been considered to have the midas touch, has come under intense scrutiny this year as Brexit continues to send waves of uncertainty throughout the markets.

But can Woodford, who was invincible during the dot.com boom and crash, and is often, painted as the man who made middle England rich, ride the current risky waves, which has seen some funds falling.

Here he shares his thoughts about investment and what we should expect as the year unfolds and 2019 begins:

For me, investment is about a rational, disciplined analysis of the fundamentals of individual businesses and the broader industries and economies in which they operate. That allows me to form judgements about the intrinsic value of those individual businesses and make investment decisions based upon the differences between the market’s perception of value and my own.

In the broader economic context, I don’t feel the need to form specific forecasts for things like inflation, GDP growth and unemployment – but I do try to form a clear understanding of their likely direction of travel.

Again, there is an opportunity to take advantage of differences between my own expectations and those that are implied in market valuations.

It’s about trying to understand what’s priced in to the market’s expectations and exploiting situations where the consensus has, for a variety of potential reasons (in my view, for example, markets are neither rational or disciplined most of the time), got things wrong.

Going forward, I expect the investment backdrop to look very different to the one that has prevailed for the last two years. Indeed, there is a growing body of evidence to support my

view of the world, highlighting the risks that exist in many parts of the market, and the long-term opportunity that our strategy is looking to exploit.

We believe that the market consensus has misread the outlook for the UK, where economic fundamentals are improving, not deteriorating. Looking forward, we see UK economic health improving, with more people in work, more wage growth, less inflation, more investment spending, better public finances and a continued recovery in manufacturing and exports.

We expect the UK economy to grow by at least 2% this year - that isn’t a spectacular rate of growth but it is a considerably better outcome than the recession that some of the more pessimistic commentators are forecasting and what appears to be priced in to valuations.

It will also compare favourably with other major economies in Europe and North America, many of which are rapidly losing momentum amid increased political risks and tighter monetary policy.

Overall, the data we’ve seen this year points to a strong labour market, real wage growth and a strong banking system. In April, real wage growth re-emerged as the post-referendum inflation, which was caused primarily by the decline in sterling, started to moderate – we expect this to continue going forward.

Meanwhile, according to ONS data released in June, the unemployment rate is the lowest since 1975, and, with

Meanwhile, the UK has a healthy banking system that is very well placed to ramp up lending to businesses and consumers and consequently, to support broad money supply growth, which has been around 5% per annum for the past two and a half years –this, coupled with all the other positive trends in the domestic economy that we are seeing and the disappointing data elsewhere, leads us to believe that the UK may exit 2018 as the fastest growing OECD economy.

The Other Side of the Wind NETFLIX BRINGS ORSON WELLES FINAL FILM TO LIFE ON THE BIG SCREEN AFTER ALMOST HALF A CENTURY

I

n 1970, legendary director Orson Welles, whose first feature film Citizen Kane shot him to stardom back in 1941, began filming what would ultimately be his final cinematic opus with a cast of luminaries that included John Huston, Peter Bogdanovich, Susan Strasberg and Welles’s partner during his later years, Oja Kodar.

However, beset by financial issues, the production stretched to 1976 and soon gained industry-wide notoriety, never to be completed or released. And, until March 2017, more than a thousand reels of film languished in a Paris vault, when producers Frank Marshall, who served as a production manager on The Other Side of the Wind during in its initial shooting, and Filip Jan Rymsza, who spearheaded efforts to have Orson Welles’s vision completed more than 30 years after his death.

Netflix secured the rights to the film and set about, working with Marshall and Rymsza, to bring Welles vision to life.

Mary Cornelius-Reid A.M. ost people are aware of the importance of a will in protecting their assets and loved ones after they pass on but all too few of us consider protecting ourselves if the worst happens and we lose our mental capacity while we are still alive.

It is truly a horrible thought, but sadly one we have to face up to. However, planning ahead can make a great difference and ease the burden on relatives and carers.

are no longer able to hold the tiller? CGA Legal Services can help you to make a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), which gives an appointed individual the legal authority to take care of specific aspects of your financial affairs, and/or your health and welfare – if you no longer have the capacity to do so.

James Baker – Head of CGA Legal Services points out that it is not only the elderly who should consider an LPA. There are numerous reasons why younger people might become incapacitated, for example, through accident, stroke or illness. “Most people think that if they become unable to look after their affairs loved ones can step in and take over. That isn’t the case, however.” He explains that if you have not made an LPA, a family member would have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your Deputy. This involves a hefty annual fee

and lesser powers than those granted by an LPA. There is also no guarantee that the family member would be accepted.

This unpleasant scenario can be avoided by arranging an LPA, which is best done under the guidance of a solicitor. Making an LPA involves you choosing someone you know and trust to make important decisions for you when you are judged unable to do so. In terms of the LPA an Attorney is strictly governed by the provisions of the Mental Health Act 2005. LPA documents must be certified - preferably by a solicitor then registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before they are acted upon.

he festive feasting season is almost upon us and as our thoughts turn to what to serve on Christmas Day we find out why Derek Kelly (Paul Kelly’s father) decided to move away from intensive standards of farming to produce a sustainable and healthy native bird, buying up the last remaining British Bronze turkeys.

Kelly’s pioneering spirit and vision ensured his turkeys had access to their natural woodland habitat to produce the tastiest turkey on Christmas tables throughout the land. Breaking industry standards, Kelly ensures every bird matures for twice the age of farmed birds and uses the medieval tradition of plucking birds by hand. In doing so the Kelly family provide a sumptuous Christmas lunch by producing a bird with rich flavours and delicious meat. u

Why did your father decide to breed Christmas Bronze turkeys?

My dad worked for big companies in the poultry industry for a long time and decided he wanted to go out on his own and do something different - so he chose Christmas turkeys. At the time, in 1971, supermarkets were selling fresh white turkeys, so he saw a gap in the market for the very obviously different KellyBronze breed. They had a lovely back story, and he wanted to take the process back to traditional methods – letting them run wild, growing to full maturity and dry plucking and hanging.

When did you begin managing the business and farming yourself?

I have always been involved with the business – I was plucking turkeys from the age of 7, but I came back on board full time when I was 21 when it was myself, my dad and my sister running it all. It’s always been a family effort. I suppose I’ve 38

been officially ‘Managing Director’ for about 20 years, but in reality it’s about 35!

What were the pitfalls?

It’s been a long old journey so naturally we’ve suffered pitfalls. There were times when it was a serious challenge, but it was still fantastic fun. The years of 1986

and 87 were particularly tough – I was going out to butchers who were telling me people didn’t want Bronze turkeys, so I had to convince them to work together with us as we were both losing money to the supermarkets selling cheap, frozen turkeys. The turning point came when we got the seal of approval from Delia Smith, who is now a very close friend. www.thecga.co.uk • Winter 2018

CHRISTMAS TURKEYS Our involvement with Delia’s TV show at the time led us to BBC Good Food Show and people began to show interest. We ran with it and consumer demand grew and grew.

What is the highlight of farming these creatures and the downside?

The highlight for me is simply seeing the birds running wild and free range in the woodland - I genuinely love working with them. The biggest single threat to the business is disease, which is why we take every possible measure to prevent it ever being an issue.

Can you describe the environment these animals have?

The birds are entirely free range and have the unparalleled luxury of living through every season, foraging in their natural woodland habitat. The birds are plucked by hand – a method of preparation dating back to medieval times. This enables them to be dry hung, tenderising the meat and intensifying the taste.

How should we store a bought turkey when we get them home - often they are too big for the fridge!

We deliver our turkeys in an insulated outer box, with a special KellyBronze box inside to maintain the chilled temperature. They are transported deep chilled, so they really don’t come up in temperature very quickly. You can literally leave them outside in the box for up to four days.

Why are your turkeys a better choice in terms of flavour and product?

It’s no one thing – the whole process from hatching to hanging is unique to us and ensures the best possible taste.

Can you give CGA readers the solution to perfect roast Christmas turkey, what are your top tips?

Quite simply, there is no right or wrong way of roasting a turkey. People always freak out about cooking the Christmas bird, but I would say to just think of it as a big chicken! Keep it very simple – breast down for the first hour, then turn it over and finish it off. When it comes up to temperature, take it out of the oven and let it rest for 30 minutes – anything else you do is a bonus. www.thecga.co.uk • Winter 2018

Paul’s tips to carve the Christmas Turkey 1. Wings off first Hold the wing by the tip.

Cut it at the midsection, then do the same to the other wing.

2. Legs off next Hold the leg by the end knuckle. Cut through the skin between the leg and the body and twist off, then do the same to the other leg.

3. Breast meat off Use the tip of the knife, cut along the breast bone (keep the knife close to the bone) until the breast is removed, do the same on the other side.

4. Peel off both leg and breast skin Place on a baking tray. Season and return to a hot oven for approximateley 10-15 minutes until crisp – it’s delicious!

5. Slice it up Slice up the breast meat and carve the leg off the bone.

6. Enjoy!

Pour over the reheated gravy juices from the bird. Allow time to soak up the juices before serving.

OXFORD SANDY AND BLACK

THE OXFORD SANDY AND BLACK IS ONE OF THE OLDEST BRITISH PIG BREEDS AND HAS EXISTED FOR ALMOST THREE CENTURIES These native pigs are often referred to as the ‘Plum Pudding Pig’ after its appearance or the ‘Oxford Forest Pig’ after its origin. This pretty, traditional British pig breed has almost reached extinction twice in the last century, with just one boar registered annually in the 1940s, and was only recognised as a rare breed that desperately needed support in the mid-1980’s. Today, however, thanks to the dedication of a handful of British Breeders the Oxford Sandy and Black breed is slowly and very carefully recovering, although numbers are still relatively low. The British Pig Association and the Oxford Sandy & Black Pig Society have both contributed to the continued, though small, survival of the original bloodlines, which has been imperative to its continued recovery and future. Despite this, the breed is well suited to an outdoor existence and is considered an able and natural forager. The pig is well known for its excellent maternal instincts and gentle temperament making them the perfect breed for a beginner or smallholder. They are docile and easily handled and cope well in all weather conditions making them an ideal outdoor pig. The meat produced is considered to be of a very high quality and flavour and their markings do not run through to the meat.

Farmers maintain that this breed produces succulent pork and high quality bacon and ham.

Spread a thin layer on a silt pat and place in the oven at 70c no humidity for around 20min, once nearly dry cut into 12cm by 8cm and roll around a metal tube, deep fry for 30secs then leave to cool before removing from tube.

For the tartare dressing 200ml cold pressed rapeseed oil 50ml Pedro Ximinez 8g salt 5g sugar Blend together

For the eden smokey mousse 400g eden smokey 300ml double cream Blend until smooth place in a piping bag

For the tartare 200g cooked and peeled craupadine beetroot 10g chopped dill 40g maple walnuts 30ml dressing Dice the beetroot in 1cm dice, crush the nuts and mix together then dress and add the dill. Check for seasoning.

To garnish, pipe the mousse into the cylinder, place onto the beetroot tartare, top with beetroot powder and red amaranth.

HOLBECK GHYLL CRAUPADINE BEETROOT SERVES 12 2kg craupadine beetroot 10g salt 50ml oil 10g thyme Wrap in tin foil and bake in the oven at 170c for around 2hrs until soft, then peel.

For the beetroot cylinder 550g of the cooked and peeled beetroot 90g tapioca 1.2ltr water 7g salt 5g beetroot powder Boil the tapioca in the water with the salt until translucent , then drain and blend with the beetroot and powder until smooth, pass through a chinoises.

Tucked away in the Wylye valley, Wiltshire, The Dove Inn is a proper English country pub with rooms, offering guests cosy home comforts, roaring fires, delicious food and accommodation for those visiting from afar.

LOBSTER & CRAB RAGOUT WITH KING PRAWNS, MUSSELS AND HALIBUT FILLET SERVES 4 1 lobster 1 crab 350g fillet of line caught halibut 24 mussels 16 king prawns 3tbsp olive oil 150g tomato puree 1 x celery 2 x onions 2 x carrots 1 x fennel 3 bay leaves 2 red peppers 50cl brandy 100g coriander 3tbsp garlic puree Salt & pepper 2 x red chillies 40g chilli flakes 100g cherry tomatoes Sourdough bread For the sauce Cook lobster and crab in boiling water seasoned with salt, pepper, bay leaves and chili flakes. Reserve the water.

De-shell crab and lobster and reserve the meat.

Place shells in a tray with olive oil and roast (180C) for around 45 minutes.

Heat olive oil in a large pan.

Add onions, carrots, fennel, celery, bay leaves and red pepper. Cook until slightly brown.

Add shells and use a rolling pin to crush them. FlambĂŠ with the brandy. Let the alcohol evaporate and add tomato puree.

Add the stock left from cooking lobster and crab.

Chop the coriander and set aside. Add the stalks, the garlic and chilli to the sauce.

Season with salt and pepper and let cook for 8 hours.

Check seasoning and seive leaving a clear broth.

To finish Cut four small fillets of halibut and pan fry. Bring the sauce to a simmer and add the mussels and the king prawns.

Cook for three minutes and then add the crab, lobster meat and a quarter of the pan-fried halibut.

Add the chopped pepper and the halved cherry tomatoes. Simmer for one more minute.

Serve in a bowl, topped with the lobster claw and the rest of the halibut fillet.

Sprinkle with coriander on top and serve with the sourdough bread on the side.

SEAFOOD GRILLADE SERVES 2 100g wild sea bass fillet 100g fillet of wild bream 100g fillet of line caught haddock 4 x king prawns 3 x scallops 3tbsp olive oil Salt & pepper Lemon Butter Viola edible flower Julienne fries Sourdough bread Season the fish with salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice.

Heat a frying pan, add a touch

of olive oil and pan fry the fish until nicely brown on both sides (around 2 minutes each side skin side down first).

Place fish in the oven for a further 3 minutes.

Meanwhile heat a frying pan with a little olive oil, add scallops, leave for one minute, turn it and add the king prawns.

Season with salt and pepper.

Cook for one minute and add a knob of butter. Set aside to rest.

Assemble the dish by placing the fish skin side up, scallops and prawns around the fish. Garnish with the viola flowers, lemon, hollandaise sauce and a side of julienne fries.

Method Marinate chicken and steak in olive oil, garlic puree, bay leaves, salt and pepper.

Leave for two hours minimum.

Place sizzling tray in the oven.

Chop peppers and onion into big chunks then pan fry in olive oil. Cook for one minute and place in pre-heated oven (180C) for another four minutes.

At the same time grill steak and chicken.

Heat a frying pan with a little olive oil and cook the king prawns.

Cut chicken and steak into 2cm cubes.

Remove sizzling tray from the oven, add little olive oil, steak and chicken and top with peppers, onions and king prawns.

Serve with Fritz and pepper or béarnaise sauce.

My passion for words QI Researcher and Wordsmith Adam Jacot de Boinoid shares his extraordinary love of words from across cultures and centuries - discover what a joblocks is and why we should all avoid a blatteroon

worked on the first series of the television panel game QI where, as a researcher, I read an entire Albanian dictionary to spot any interesting words. I was soon to discover that they have 27 different words both for moustaches and for eyebrows and I thought what a wonderful treasure trove there is in the world’s dictionaries. After leaving QI, my curiosity soon became a passion. I began to investigate any dictionary I could find in libraries and amongst dusty bookshop basements and countless websites to write three books for Penguin Press. My first two 48

books were on the delights of unusual foreign words, but it seemed natural and overdue to turn my attention to English for my third.

Quiz so lovingly by Victorian lexicographers, the historic language of the 19th century rogues, the jargon from the two World Wars, right up to our contemporary world and the slang that has grown up around such activities as darts, breakdancing and rock music.

Along the way it’s was fun to discover some fine old words that have fallen into disuse, but still have relevance today.

Most of us know a blatteroon, a person who will not stop talking, not to mention a wallydrag, a worthless, slovenly person, and even a shot-clog, an unwelcome drinking companion, tolerated because he pays for the drinks. And how amazing to think that sailors suffered from calenture, a distemper peculiar to sailors in hot climates, wherein they imagine the sea to be green fields, and will throw themselves into it.

I scoured the dialects of England for some other fine coinages. In the Midlands we find a jaisy, a polite and effeminate man, in Sussex women display goistering, loud feminine laughter and in Yorkshire a stridewallops, is a tall and awkward woman. In Cornwall you might be described as ploffy (plump); in Shropshire, having joblocks (fleshy, hanging cheeks); while down in Wiltshire a woman’s hands that have been left too long in the washtub are quobbled.

I could have filled a completely separate book with the wonderful jargon of specialist activities, from sport to card games. But I contented myself instead with just a pick of my favourites, from fliffis, the gymnast’s term for a twisting double somersault to squopped, the correct term for a free tiddlywink that lands on another wink.

fond of jam and groundbait (Royal Navy slang) a box of chocolates or something similar given to a lady friend in pursuit of a greater prize.

The stage has a splendid private jargon, from pong, to speak in blank verse after forgetting one’s lines, to gravy, easy laughs from a friendly audience.

Perhaps only the criminal fraternity has more, with everything from the vamper (mid 19C) for a thief who deliberately starts fights between others in order to rob people in the confusion, to the pappy (1910) the elderly man with baggy clothes and saggy pockets who makes the ideal victim for a pickpocket.

There’s a treasure trove of interesting objects too, from the bostruchizer, a small comb for curling the whiskers, to the nef, an ornamental stand in the shape of a ship that holds salt, cutlery or napkins; and it’s surely useful to know also that the right word for an inside pocket is a hoxter, and antigropelos describes those waterproof leggings you see fishermen wearing.

Along the way I’ve discovered some fascinating people, from the parnel, a priest’s mistress, through the applesquire, the male servant of a prostitute, to the screever, a writer of begging letters. If the first two of these are now largely historical, the third certainly isn’t, nor is the slapsauce, a person who enjoys eating fine food or the chafferer, the vendor who enjoys talking while making a sale.

NEOLOGISMS As for the here and now, every year new words slip effortlessly into our unofficial, informal language. Invariably to stand the test of time they need brevity, wit and invention. Many come inevitably from youth culture and so involve technology and dress. Others are more general including food. My favourite neologisms (newly coined words) of this century reflect this: they have typically derived from social networks and come into general use recently from around the English-speaking globe. They include witches’ knickers for shopping bags caught in trees, menoporsche being the phenomenon of middle-aged men attempting to recapture their lost youth by buying an expensive sports car and a hunter-ditherer being a man who wavers with regard to commitment in a relationship! So it’s refreshing to see that all is well in the garden of vocabulary as we find more and more ways to articulate that special object or sensation.

Fatbergs THE WHITECHAPEL MONSTER MADE HEADLINES ALL OVER THE WORLD, BUT WHAT EXACTLY WAS IT AND WHY ALL THE FUSS?

T

he Whitechapel Monster was the largest fatberg discovered to date – this colossus made front page news all over the globe – a revolting giant blob: now residing in the Museum of London Back in September last year, in the beautiful red brick depths of the glorious but complex Victorian engineering feat that is London’s vast sewer system, a beast was found lurking in the tunnels.

The ‘flushers’ - London sewer workers - came across this gigantic glob of fat, oil, nappies, cotton buds, sanitary waste, food and grease during a routine inspection and were shocked at its sheer size and volume.

This giant piece of toxic waste, dubbed the Whitechapel Monster, weighed 130 tonnes, the same as eleven double decker buses, and at 250 meters long, was longer than Tower Bridge. It was ten times bigger than any fatberg found before and it was blocking the capital’s aging sewage network, if it had not been found, raw sewage would have begun to spill out and onto the streets of East London’s Whitechapel.

Workmen at Thames Water spent more than 13 weeks working with spades, high-powered water jets and sheer brute force to break up the beast and bring it under control, the company have since stated that fatbergs cost them up to £1 million a month to clear.

Incredibly, the Whitechapel Monster made headlines globally, hitting the news-stands in more than 156 countries.

Since its discovery the fatberg story was featured on news shows, live on the radio, a fatberg musical is currently under creation and a Channel 4 documentary entitled, ‘Fatberg Autopsy’ was created and watched by more than a million viewers. Finally, earlier this year a special edition manhole cover was installed to commemorate it.

The Museum of London display reminds us to dispose of our waste properly waste network manager, said: “The Whitechapel fatberg revolted and fascinated everyone, and got people everywhere talking about what happens next to their waste.

“It was a vivid image of what happens if people flush wet wipes down the toilet or pour fat down the sink, and the difficult and challenging job our teams do every single day, whilst hidden beneath our feet. It certainly showed that out of sight isn’t gone forever – and now their heroic work in awful conditions will be remembered with this new commemorative manhole cover.”

Today, the last remaining slice of the Whitechapel Monster can be seen in the Museum of London.“The Whitechapel fatberg became a global celebrity but we didn’t think for a second it would end up on display in a museum, said, Thames Water’s Becky Trotman.

“Fatbergs are lurking, congealing and growing fast under our feet and as soon as we clear one, another is growing somewhere else in the sewer network.

The display is a vivid reminder to us all that out of sight is not gone forever, so please help keep London and all the sewers flowing: Don’t feed the fatberg!”

However, positive news did come out of this toxic waste story, Thames Water recently announced that the majority of the Whitechapel fatberg has been converted into more than 10,000 litres of biodiesel. The congealed mass of fat, oil, grease, wet wipes and sanitary products will create enough environmentallyfriendly energy, to power 350 doubledecker Routemaster buses for a day.

Meanwhile, in a bid to rid the sewers of fatbergs Thames Water is launching a campaign to get food outlets to properly manage their waste fats, oils and grease.

There is a law against businesses putting incorrect things down the drain and managing their waste. Under section 111 of the Water Industry Act it states: it is an offense to discharge anything into a sewer which may interfere with it flowing freely. However, to date only two restaurants have ever been fined or prosecuted under this offence in the UK. 51

Having studied English and Philosophy at degree level, Adrian went on to study for a Post Graduate on Unknown Poets of the 1890’s when he took a job at the National Trust owned, Sudbury Hall in Derby, to pay the rent.

Part of his work consisted of researching family papers, lists, documents and household notes. His fascination took hold as he studied the 17th century handwritten shopping lists and documented the myriad daily servant chores, revealing a window into the past, one that he could relate to and which brought the family and their past in this grand country house truly to life. u www.thecga.co.uk • Winter 2018

“Something clicked and I fell in love with country houses. I was learning on the job – I had no training and I was trying to read 17th century handwritten household accounts! The notion of being in touch with the past, discovering a real connection that comes from family letters, receipt books and accounts – suddenly you are there with them. You have a window into their house, their world. The actual houses are fragile, beautiful pieces of art that often you cannot touch, so to find different ways of accessing the past was revolutionary for me.”

Another facet of this job was taking groups of school children into the Victorian school-room at Sudbury Hall. The curator there was visionary for his time and rather than stick to the old ways: ‘keep them quiet or keep them out’, the curator actively encouraged the visiting school groups to engage with history. In a bid to get them to really understand what its like to be a Victorian child ensconced inside a private school room with a solitary tutor: stepping into their shoes and experiencing a living history.

This journey inspired Adrian, as he delved deeper into the domestic and personal past life of Sudbury Hall and encouraged visiting children to experience history, it began to inform his plans for the future.

“These houses relied on an army of domestic servants, clearly defining the social differences, this vital and exciting life

was an epiphany for me.”

Adrian is the author of 14 books on social and architectural history, in 2016 his book, The Long Weekend, was one of the most critically acclaimed of the year. The book documented real life in English country houses between the wars as the British Empire, and stately homes, slowly declined.

During his research into The Long Weekend, he came across a country house which King George V had lived in: “It was given to him as a Royal gift and my interest was piqued, I was intrigued to find out how they lived in Sandringham. How the royal family was supported from the ladies in waiting to the horse boys – they are all part of one vast network of support staff, some of which were ceremonial and many practical.”

In the 16th century more than 2,000 people worked in the royal household and today it is about 1,200 including maids and private secretaries. The royal palace is quite simply a community in its own right, a vast machine, providing one family with more help than we can imagine. A hundred years ago these jobs, which included clowns, courtiers and clerks, would have been handed on, there was a clear hierarchy in the system: if a position came up you invited your brother, sister or cousins to work in the palace.

and what kind of perks each employee received.

Other detailed notes describe exactly how the King’s bed should be made, how Henry VIII kept tripping over his dogs and how James I had to cut back on drink bills - all of which provide an insightful picture of how the household functioned.

Notes from the realm of Elizabeth 1st document who was entitled to sit where in the hall and include local complaints: some workers took food home but, conveniently forgot to return the pewter plates.

Charles 2nd moaned that guards were smoking in the corridors and that servants and visitors would piss anywhere they liked, creating a dreadful stench, other gripes included people talking during the sermon. Life was complicated by petty gripes and rivalries, the practicalities of cooking dinner for thousands on a daily basis or ensuring the king always won at tennis!

Over the centuries it was accepted that menial kitchen staff slept in kitchen corners, compared to today, where staff have access to a gym and catering hall and the palace runs like a vast hotel complex - the more senior staff tend to live off site.

Adrian: “You imagine that the royal household is a smooth well-oiled machine with serious security but in the 17th century there were prostitutes wandering around, barbers and milliners set up shop in the courtyard and www.thecga.co.uk • Winter 2018

servants routinely bought their friends and acquaintances into the place. Until the late 19th century the palace was a haphazard social mechanism.

“By trying to build a full picture I discovered just how much has changed, across five centuries, and not changed. For example, a night marshal would keep order within a 12 mile radius of a royal while today a tight security network is in place but doing exactly the same job.”

Adrian is currently turning his attention to his next historical project, a sequel to The Long Weekend, but set between 1945-1975 and looking at the impact of the National Trust on the ownership of these houses. In his research he has come across Sockernesh Manor, a Tudor House in Sussex once jointly owned by Tom Jones and Englebert Humperdink. Leading him to create an intriguing chapter dedicated to rock-star ownership of country piles, at one time all of The Beatles owned one and The Rolling Stones, if only walls really could talk - imagine the parties held!

Adrian Tinniswood also lectures at the University of Buckingham on the country’s one and only MA on English Country Houses.

EXTRACT TAKEN FROM: THE SECRET LIFE OF THE MOUNTAIN HARE Having drawn into the first layby south of Slochd summit, on the A9, I took a rucksack, camera and other photographic gear and ascended the hill to the east, intent on my first picture of a mountain hare. The going was steep, the ground rough underfoot, and my load was heavy, but that was not new. I had been photographing wildlife since my wife, Lyndsey, and I decided that my earlier passion of salmon fishing was too mutually exclusive. This we could share.

Our lives had been altered at, of all things, a dinner party when one of our guests suggested that, to be world class at anything, it is necessary to specialise. I decided that my focus for five years would be five species: dotterel, red grouse, crested tit, ptarmigan and mountain hare, the only mammal. Of these I had so far photographed all four birds, but no mountain hares.

At that time, indeed until recently, they had not been photographed extensively. Other than experts, few people knew all that much about them, or much cared. In the few years that have

passed since that morning above Slochd, public awareness has increased beyond belief and these amazing animals have begun to be appreciated for what they are and the magic they bring to the landscape. This turnaround, I believe, has been substantially achieved by the photographers who first specialised in capturing their images.

Casting around for where I might locate such a thing as a mountain hare, I received several suggestions and was heading for a hill behind Kingussie, in Strathspey, when I spotted two dead animals by the side of the road. This was clue enough to set me on my fateful journey, not to the top of the hill but to an area of elevated peatland where, ahead of me, nestled into a soft ledge within a peat hag, I spotted what at first looked like a length of bleached bogwood. Maybe it was something else.

I fitted a suitable lens to my camera and zoomed into, yes, the face of a mountain hare: its distinctive eyes and ears.

Now I had my first picture I felt relaxed, somewhat justified, in my quest. In the course of the afternoon I had several fascinating encounters with mountain hares and this word ‘encounter’ became part of my

expedition lexicon. Each was different not only because of location, light, and weather, but also because each hare is an individual. To look in its eyes is to search and, sometimes, be searched. Over the following years certain individuals would find their places in my heart.

Soon, the odd picture of mine began to appear in magazines, and eventually on the BBC nature programme, Springwatch. Illustrating an article on ‘The Masters of Disguise’ by Patrick Laurie some appeared in, of all possible outlets, the Shooting Gazette. The irony did not go past me, but my own, reluctant moral compromise proved justified by an email from a reader who said that, persuaded by my photographs, he would not kill mountain hares again.

I was on the road to professionalism.

My article on ‘How to Photograph Mountain Hares’ on the website Nature TTL completed the job and soon I had set up as a guide and tutor visiting three locations frequently. One is in the Northern Corries of the Cairngorms, two others are in the Monadhliath mountains. Very different landscapes, divided by the A9 the Cairngorms and the Monadhliath make up probably the most varied, wild land in Britain.

The day America met the mafia Crime Writer Ben Biggs takes a look into the chart and rise of the most powerful organised criminal underworld gang in America’s history - the mob - as they gather for an apparently innocent summer BBQ in 1957

B

y the late 1950s, the United States was still in denial of the existence of the mafia in the country.

It took a countryside picnic at businessman’s ranch to expose the power of La Cosa Nostra Joe Barbara was hosting a party. A barbeque, to be precise, at his 58acre ranch in the sleepy hamlet of Apalachin, near the Pennsylvania border. Barbara had invited his family, as well as many friends of theirs.

He had put in a large order at his favourite butcher, for 200 pounds of good steak among other quality cuts of meat. These friends of his, like Barbara himself, were wealthy men by anyone’s standards and were used to the finer things in life, so no expense would be spared. They would be travelling from across the States for the barbeque, the first time these mutual friends had ever congregated in this way, so the host had to make it a momentous occasion. And indeed it was... but probably not for reasons these mobsters would have preferred.

They weren’t assembling in one location in unprecedented numbers simply to have a knees-up, although the escalating power and wealth of the US mafia was certainly something for them to celebrate. It was a powerplay by the former Luciano Family 66

Following questioning by the New York Crime Commission, Michele Miranda and Carmine Lombardozzi (of the Genovese and Gambino crime families respectively) are taken to jail. They refused to answer questions and pleaded innocent to all charges

underboss, Vito Genovese, now the newly-minted boss of the renamed Genovese Family, who had murdered his way to becoming the number one don in La Cosa Nostra. With all heads of all the US mafia families in one place, they could divvy-up the rackets of recently ‘retired’ bosses, discuss national operations, smooth out mob family relations... it was the business conference of a big criminal corporation.

If J. Edgar Hoover’s G-Men knew that dozens of the most powerful gangsters in the US were gathering on 14 November 1957, then they certainly kept it close to their chest. The FBI, barely 20 years old in name, had

refused to recognise that a national crime syndicate linking organised criminal families across the United States even existed. Hoover had too much to lose by acknowledging La Cosa Nostra in America: they had tentacles that reached far into the police stations, the courts, even the halls of government. If the Feds led a crackdown on their lucrative rackets the mob could easily hit them back in their pockets, paying off congressmen to slash the FBI’s budget. Or, by corrupting Hoover’s agents and sullying the FBI’s spotless reputation.

Or perhaps, hush-hush, by leveraging their knowledge of Hoover’s illicit sexual orientation against him. Some mob historians think that this was in fact the reason Hoover had banned FBI employees from even using the word ‘mafia’.

The fact was that, up until the late fifties, acknowledgment of the mafia as a underworld force in the United States was the exception rather the rule. Journalists rolled their eyes and the authorities scoffed at the notion, while desperately seeking ways to distract the nation from the truth.

never been clearly defined,” wrote former assistant district attorney Alvin H. Goldstein, “and its existence is yet to be objectively proven. Yet, the word is bandied about as if there were no question of such an organisation.

Many law enforcement officers simply assume the existence of ‘Mafia’, and use the word as a sword to excite public opinion in the hope that they may obtain increased funds and official sanction for extreme methods of investigation and arrest.”

This attitude suited the mob just fine. As long as the rest of America was fighting the devil it knew – those damn Communists – La Cosa Nostra was free to get obscenely rich at the expense of the law-abiding land.

New York State police seemed just as oblivious to this underworld event as the Feds. But one keeneyed State Trooper was about to make a career-defining bust that would put Apalachin on the map.

Edgar D. Croswell was a sergeant in the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation. He’d had his suspicions about the ‘soft drink bottler’ Joe Barbara for years, despite the old man’s local charitable contributions, and kept his opulent ranch under occasional observation.

Investigating the case of a cheque that had bounced, Croswell and his partner Vasisko paid a visit to the Parkway Motel, 10 miles east of Apalachin. As he was leaning up against the front desk and chatting 68

to the owner, in walks Joe Barbara junior. Croswell recognised the mobster’s son and eavesdropped as he made reservations for five rooms the following day, for “a convention of beverage distributors”. The veteran policeman’s radar lit up and once Barbara’s son had left with the keys, he drove to the estate for a discreet bit of reconnaissance. There he saw a bakery truck and two cars – one with a local New York license plate, the other with an Ohio license plate. Croswell actually thought he’d stumbled across a bootlegging operation, unlicensed

barbeque pit in the nearby summer house eating steak sandwiches.

It must have been a surreal scene for the four lawmen. Croswell did the only rational thing under the circumstances: he got out of the car, took out his notebook and started jotting down license plates.

A couple of the suited men clocked the policemen and their vehicle in the drive, Italian voices began to raise the alarm and suddenly, dozens more were making a sharp exit from the summer house as well as the garden.

He called up the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agency and arranged for some help the following day.

At lunchtime on 14 November, Croswell, Vasisko, and two ATF agents turned up at Joe Barbara’s house.

The scene was far from what they had expected. Around 30 Cadillacs, Lincolns and other luxury cars were lined up in the driveway, turtle-waxed and gleaming chrome. Their equally buffed and dandy owners, sporting expensive suits and white fedoras, hovered around the long bar and

all directions, into the nearby woods, fields and some into their vehicles outside. Croswell backed down the drive – the only exit from the house by car and sent his partner back to the station with the squad car for backup, putting a radio message out to stop any well-dressed men walking along the road. He then employed an obscure by-law that allows police to stop and search cars for illegal weapons or game during the hunting season. Croswell later confessed to have never used the law before, or ever again. the soon-to-be head of the NorthEast Pennsylvania mob. As Croswell had sent his car back to the station, these two powerful men suffered the additional indignity of having their f lash car requisitioned for a roadblock. “They weren’t too happy,” Croswell later mused.

As mobsters rolled down the driveway into the roadblock or spilled out of the countryside into the path of waiting police officers, they were each searched. None carried any identification and most carried extremely large amounts of cash, typically $2,000-$3000, but some had wads of up to $20,000 (around $180,000 today) stuffed into their pockets. Each was duly taken to the small police station and checked out. Many had records, but none had outstanding warrants and when www.thecga.co.uk • Winter 2018

Croswell phone the FBI, the feds simply weren’t interested. The ATF agents quickly realised that there was no bootlegging operation here and left the state troopers to it. Meanwhile, the station was filling up with these gangsters, 60 of them in total. They were mostly quiet and respectful, and simply sat there smoking. They all gave the same story to the cops: they were there to pay their respects to Joe Barbara senior, who wasn’t well. With nothing concrete on them, Croswell had to release them all despite his suspicions. But that wasn’t the last he was to hear about the Apalachin meeting.

A local newspaper got wind of the meeting and obtained the names of the 60 men arrested. The news that these top mob bosses had met in a single, rural location quickly

spread across the country. Reporters recognised underworld names from their locale and put two-and-two together: this was as strong a case for proving the existence of a national crime syndicate as they could hope for. Though the men arrested were cleared of any wrongdoing, the entire affair was thoroughly embarrassing for the mafia, as well as the FBI, who ultimately had no recourse but to admit that the mafia did exist in America.

In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Croswell later recalled with some irony the moment the mobsters spotted the four lawmen at the Barbara estate: “Nobody walked over to our car or said a word to us. If they had asked us to leave, we would have.

They weren’t breaking any law by having a picnic.”

Equity release myths Eight equity release myths busted with our guide to understanding how releasing cash from your home actually works

F

or older homeowners who need some extra cash to supplement their pensions, equity release has a lot to offer. Equity release plans, called Lifetime Mortgages, are a carefully designed financial product for people aged 55 and over. They allow you to access some of the value tied up in your property, either as a lump-sum payment or a on a drawdown basis and they have helped thousands of UK homeowners reach their retirement goals and lifelong aspirations by converting property wealth into financial freedom.

But equity release is not always easy to understand and many people – quite rightly – have a number of questions about how the schemes actually work. We have put together a list of the top eight Equity Release Myths to set the record straight.

Myth 1: You will no longer own your own home Contrary to popular belief, taking out a lifetime mortgage does not affect the ownership of your home. With all equity release plans you can remain in your property for life as long as it is your main residence. One of the main benefits of a lifetime mortgage is that you are not selling a part of your property, you are just borrowing against it with no fixed end date. The fact that the mortgage lasts for as long as you need it makes it a great later life option because it removes age as a barrier to lending.

Myth 2: You can end up owing more than the value of your home This is untrue. The ‘No Negative Equity Guarantee’ comes as standard with plans from Equity Release

Council approved lenders and ensures that you will never owe more than the value of your property when it is sold.

Once the property is sold, the sale proceeds are used to pay off the lifetime mortgage and any interest that you have allowed to roll up.

Once the loan has been repaid, any remaining funds will be paid to you or your heirs based on the instructions in your Will. In the unlikely event that the property sells for less than the amount of the loan, the remaining balance will be written off.

Myth 4: You must make monthly repayments with a lifetime mortgage Lifetime mortgages differ from normal residential mortgages in that you do not have to make monthly repayments. Like any other borrowing, an interest rate is charged and any interest you choose not to pay is simply added to the total and paid when you or your heirs eventually sell the property. However, if you want to make some form of repayment you can do so with many plans.

Myth 5: There will be nothing left for an inheritance There are some lifetime mortgages available that allow you to protect a portion of your equity for use in the future as an inheritance. However, it is becoming increasingly popular for people to use equity release to provide

Myth 6: Equity release isn’t safe Actually, you’ll find that since 2004, the equity release market has been fully regulated. All equity release providers and advisers are regulated and supervised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) – which regulates and protects to put your mind at rest. There is significant consumer protection in place – whether you choose a lifetime mortgage or a home reversion plan.

For extra piece of mind, there is also an industry trade body, the Equity Release Council (ERC), that represents providers, qualified advisers, intermediaries, solicitors and surveyors who work in the sector.

Members such as Ask ERIC must adhere to the Council’s Statement of Principles, which puts in place safeguards for you.

Myth 7: What if my circumstances change? I don’t want to get saddled with early repayment charges Early repayment charges can indeed be expensive, but in some circumstances they won’t apply.

Options such as defined charges or voluntary partial repayments have greatly enhanced the flexibility of equity release products.

Myth 8: I might not want to stay here forever. Wouldn’t equity release tie me down to this house?

Many equity release products are portable. As long as your property meets the criteria of your equity release provider, you may be able to move and take your plan with you.

One thing to note is that the value of the property you are moving to must be enough that the equity release provider is happy to lend the same amount against it. If not, you may have to pay off some of the amount you’ve borrowed early, but this is generally not subject to a penalty early repayment charge.

Having to move into a residential care home, is one reason an equity release scheme can end, with the money that has been borrowed repaid to the lender. However, there are points to consider. If you have taken

out an equity release plan as a couple, the plan continues as long as one of you remains in the home – so if one spouse moves into care, the equity release scheme keeps running if the other partner stays in their property.

The same applies if one partner dies: as long as the surviving partner remains in the home, there is no obligation to pay off the equity release borrowing.

So, here it is, Merry Christmas!

Slade guitarist Dave Hill shares his: A Day In The Life

I

wake up at about 6.30 am. I’m an early bird who likes to catch the worm! I’ll go for long walk to start my day off and then I have a strong coffee and breakfast of porridge: which I love.

I have a shower and then I’ll usually ring my agent, Abbie. Next I check my emails, and delete all the rubbish ones. I don’t do sound checks till after midday if I’ve got a live show with Slade. If it’s a good day everything is working OK; if it’s a bad day things might need fixing.

My office is my laptop – there’s a lot going on right now as we’re getting nearer to Christmas and the publication of my autobiography, So Here It Is, so there’s plenty of promotion to do around that which I really enjoy. Things in my life are great – I absolutely believe in living in the moment!

Lunch is usually spinach, egg, smoked salmon and tomatoes,

with my wife. I don’t tend to cook…

After lunch I play classical guitar in the garden, the neighbours like it and I love to entertain the birds. Guitar practice is always important and it helps to keep everything fresh. I might write a song maybe, or if I’m tired watch an old movie in the afternoon, it reminds me of Sunday afternoons when I was a child back home with Mum and Dad. I love clothes so I go shopping quite a lot.

I have five grandkids so the house can get very wild, but it’s always fun.

Before a gig I am lucky I don’t get nervous - I’ve been doing this for over fifty years now and I have a devoted passion for it. Every night is special to me, especially the feeling of the crowd when I’m at the side of the stage waiting to go on. That’s all I need to get ready to perform – I don’t need booze, I don’t wear make-up on stage, I just have a moment to myself to do the best I can.

After all, this is all I need – to be in the moment of joy, playing my Gold Gibson to thousands of people singing their heads off. Need I say more?

After a show, if it’s a late one, I’ll go back to the hotel and up to bed. But if it’s early, I’ll have a meal afterwards with a glass of red wine. If there have been any problems with the show they are dealt with another day, with a fresh mind. I do dream a lot and always have.

I like soft pillows – I’m a bit of a softy really, and I like the window open when it’s possible. I grew up in a cold bedroom in a council house, so I don’t like hot bedrooms. Sometimes I like the sound of the wind outside – it’s calming, or I like snowy days and frozen windows and loads of cosy blankets on the bed.

It’s important to me to make great memories: like Slade’s music, which people always tell me made their youth great. I loved those glam rock days they were loads of fun. People say they remember me with a smile…and what could be better than that?
