Freshman Speech The aim of a speech student is to master the difficult art of public speaking. After many hours of practice and drill, a speech student has a chance to test his skill by participating in various speech tournaments throughout the year.

Next the Jackets met Lynch in the second home game of the season. It was a great defensive ball game with both teams holding the opposing team’s offense to practically zero yardage. The Jacket defense held on but one play, which resulted in a 76 yard run by Lynch. The Bulldogs made the 2-point conversion and the the game and hand the score all was 8-0, Lynch. That was the fIrst and only scoring as Lynch proceeded to win Jackets their first loss.

On September 1 8th, the niighty Jackets met their first AA opponent of the season. On this night the Jackets met the Corbin Redhounds at Bradner Stadium. This game was also a defensive one with neither team mov ing the ball very much, but the Jackets prevailed on a 5 yard pass from Wilson to Patterson for the TD late in the second quarter. The two-point conversion was good, and the Jackets had scored their second shutout of the season by defeating Corbin, 8-0.

The following week the Mighty Jackets went to Knox Central. Middlesboro had an easy time defeating their second AA opponent by a score of 42-12.

Again on the road, the Jackets met their third AA opponent at Cawood. Middlesboro had a slow start, finding the Trojans a much better ball club than expected. At the half, Middlesboro led only 6-0. Knowing how important this victory would be, the Jackets went on to a more respectable win of 20-0.

The Jackets returned to Bradner Stadium the following week to clobber Bell High 28-0, for the Middlesboro Homecoming of 1970. The final statistics showed that the Jackets had 265 total yards to Bell High’s 91.

so by winning the next three games in a row: a comeback victory over our rivals from Bell High, a 21 point victory over Knox Central, and an 18 point trounce over Barbourville. Now the predictions were gone and all the local papers had picked MHS to win the regional title. The Christmas season came and so did the MIT. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets were eliminated by Harlan in the first round and were not able to claim the first MIT victory in MHS history.

This defeat was not only disheartening to the team, but it was the start of a miserable slump. The Jackets lost the next eight out of nine games. The Yellow Jackets lost to Lone Jack once again, and then were upset by Cumberland. MHS was worried because key players had sustained injuries and spirit was down. The Yellow Jackets got back on their feet to defeat Dixie Heights of Lexington but hopes were gone and the predictions were in the scene again. All the players were supposedly ready to take on our arch rival, Pinevile, but the trip to Pinevile was as heartbreaking as the earlier defeats. The Mountain Lions were victorious by a three point margin. (57-54) This defeat started another losing streak.

The Yellow Jackets were beaten by Harlan, Corbin, Mason County, Harlan once again, Laurel County, and then by Rodney Woods and Company (Lone Jack). The Jackets were playing well, but were not able to gain any victories. The predictions were back to stay, but if a close look were taken, it would be noticed that the Jackets were beaten by some of the top teams in the area and state The team had simply not jelled.

On the night of February 19th, the Yellow Jacketsjelled. We avenged our loss from Pineville with a 71-58 stomp, then went on to defeat Oneida as Steve Stapleton, a reserve, scored 21 points and a victory for MHS. After the Jackets defeated Henderson Settlement, they were ready for tournament action.

District play started at Bell High and MHS was to-play Red Bird. The Jackets gained a sloppy win and then had to play Bell High on Bell High’s home floor. The Jackets rose to the occasion and defeated the Bobcats 58-54. Thus, a showdown between Lone Jack and MHS was on the card again. But it was the same story as Rodney Woods dominated the game and beat the Yellow Jackets for the District title 58-56. The Jackets showed more hustle and ability than they had shown all year, and hopes were riding high as the Jackets headed for the Regional Tournament.

MHS were the underdogs in the tournament and were picked to lose to Knox Central in the first game of the tourna ment. To everyone’s surprise, the Jackets won 71-69. The next opponent was Cumberland. They had beaten us earlier, but MHS beat the Indians by ten points. Next the Jackets were to play Lynch for the title. The five men that had done it all year (Bobby McDade, Howard Spriggs, Binky Howard, Myron Sharp, and Robert Mayhall) got it all together and beat Lynch for the 13th Regional Crown by ten points, 59-49.

This year’s basketball queen candidates were Andra Sigmon, Freshman; Kathy Slusher, Sopho more; and Jan Weller, Junior. Kathy Slusher was chosen as third annual Basketball Queen by the basketball team. She was crowned by George Paynter at the half-time of the Middlesboro-Mason County baligame. The coronation and dance following the game were sponsored by the Middlesboro High School Student Council

This year’s Homecoming Queen candidates were Theresa Bisceglia, Senior; Alice Welch, Senior and Kathy Slusher, Sophomore. The queen was elected by the football players and was crowned during half-time of the Middlesboro-Bell High football game. Bo Hoe, Key Club President, crowned Theresa Bisceglia as our 1970-71 Homecoming Queen.

She graduated from high school at Ewing, Virginia. She continued her education by receiving her A.B. degree from Lincoln Memorial University.

1971 Graduation Graduation ceremonies for the first class to complete four years in the new high school building and the 75th graduating class were held at Middlesboro High School’s Fuson Gymnasium.

The 127 graduates,one of the smallest classes in recent years, were issued a challenge by their peers and principal, Lloyd sharp to make the best use of the knowl edge obtained in their four years ofhigh school.

The knowledge acquired thus far is “something to be proud of” but is of little value unless it is organized and put to use, class valedictorian Dana Greene told the students. “Something meaningful must be shaped from our knowledge.” Greene said later.

Salutatorian Larry Keith Gulley warned his fellow students not to become quitters or dreamers who cam not manage the initiative to reach their goals in life.

The class theme, “We Have Only Just Begun,” was sung by graduating senior Mary Kaye Sanders.

Several hundred bouquets of daisies, the class flower, were hurled into the air by the seniors when the 1971 class was officially pronounced as graduated by school board Chairman James Jackson.

Principal Lloyd Sharp, his voice at times cracking with emotion congratulated the seniors on “completion

of an important phase” of their lives.

The 1971 graduating class was one of the most honored classes in the history of MHS having the highest percentage of honor students in the school’s history.

Valedictorian Greene headed the list with ten individual honors. Besides being selected valedictorian, Greene won awards in civics, English, physics, the Bausch and Lomb award for Science, University of Kentucky Alumni Award, $300 Western Kentucky University Regent’s Scholarship, and a year’s subscription to Reader’s Digest for being valedictorian. Greene was also cited for 1 0 years perfect attendance and was listed among the Society of Outstanding American High School Students.

Salutatorian Gulley was also awarded the Mathe matics award, cited for four years of perfect attendance, and was named to the Society of Outstanding American High School Students.

The Greg Page Memorial Scholarship award of $400 went to Theresa Williams. Miss Williams was also chosen as an alternate for the Business and Professional Woman’s Club’s $100 scholarship.

The $ 1 ,000 John I-I. Yeager Scholarship Award to the University of Kentucky , went to Robert McDade,

Miss Sanders also received the State High School Press Association Enoch Graham Memorial Certificate, a Certificate from the Lincoln Memorial University Early Admissions Program where she has completed 1 8 hours of college credits, and a $300 first place award in fine arts from Maryville College.

York received a $ 1 ,200 Music Scholarship to Morehead-State University, and the John Philip Sousa Award as the outstanding band member.

Carla Ann Vaughn received a $300 presidential scholarship to Eastern Kentucky University and Scholarship-Leadership Award from the same university.

She also received the Louisville Courier-Journal and Times certificate of merit for having the highest college ACT score.

The speech awards went to Kathryn Lynn Parks, most improvement; Theresa Ann Bisceglia, accomplishment; Debra Yvonne Cottrell, most points.

Miss Parks also received the Middlesboro Junior Woman’s Club $25 savings bond for accomplishment in music and a scholarship in voice and drama from Stephen’s College, Columbia, Mo. Other Junior Woman’s Club savings bonds went to Debra Ann Evans in speech and Stephen Michael Bolten in art.

The Dewey Guy American Legion Post 14 $250 scholarship was awarded to Patricia Bryant, and the Business and Professional Woman’s Club’s $ 1 00 scholarship was awarded to Patsy Jean Byrge.

Alice Welch received a scholarship to the University of’Kentucky for majorettes.

Debbie Evans and Jill Sigmon were named to the Society of Outstanding American High School Students.

Eric Wayne Gulley and Deborah Sue Blondell received copies of the book, “I Dare You,” from the Danforth Foundation for their demonstration of courage, leadership, and character. Miss Blondell also received the DAR award.
