THE

YELLOW

When uniforms were issued for spring practice it looked bad for the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets. With the exception of three semi-regulars, the entire 50 team was wiped out. The coaches faced a job of completely rebuilcina a football team out of small and inexpericnced men Since the team was not blessed in size the coaches had to make up kr this with many hours of practice and for this it took brainwork. After a few weeks of football fundamentals the Jackets had several extra squad games which helped us rn m e ns I y Then came football camp. The boys were sorry to see Mr. Freeman go at this time, but Mr. Bill Klier stepped in to take the reins as line coach and drilled the Jackets lineman to precision with the help of coach J. M. Taylor. After two weeks of hard practice and bruising football on Norris Lake, the Jackets came home hard as nails and ready to take on any teem in the state.

Everyone worked hard the next week in preparation for the Bell Hi Bobcats which

was to be the Jackets first game of the season. The Yellow Jackets went into this game a decided underdog, but it seemed as no one told the Jackets about it as they held a 6-0 half-time lead and a final 1 9-0 score indicat ed that the Jackets were greatly underestimated. Then came the supposed weak team from Hall Hi. The Yellow Jackets starteG off with a bang, scoring two quick touchdowns. Then something happened to he Jackets and the two teams fought it out evenly matched the rest of the game.

Each team scored 6 more points, The final score, 20-6, gave the Jackets a shock, since they were a favored to win the game by a great margin. Next came the Somerset Briarjumpers, a strong team from Central Kentucky. l seemed after the game started all said was true. This was our first game away from home, all the Jackets were jittery. Although Somerset sported an all-state tackle and a quarterback bidding for state honors; a game and determined swarm of Yellow Jackets stung the Briarjumpers n a very

close 7-6 decision. Several times during this game were the Jackets halted within inches of: the goal line to lose scoring opportunities.

Next came a very important game. The Jackets journeyed to Lynch for a very im portant conference tilt. The Jackets just couldn’t seem to get rolling as they trailed by 13-7 at halftime and 20-7 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Then the Jackets caught fire and scored twice only to miss both extra points and then lose a heartbreaker 20-19.

Next came the Corbin Redhounds, an old rival of Middlesboro. Although we were overweighted man for man, the Jackets and Redhounds fought to a standstill in the first half until the very last play when the Jackets scored on a long pass. The Jackets turned on the heat to score 20 more points in the second half and thus push the final score to 260.

Then the Jackets came home for a three game stand. The first team of these three games was the Cumberland Redskins. Since this team gave Middlesboro a mighty score last year, the Jackets were out for revenge.

Revenge they did get too, the team went out with 40-14; the reserves playing the latter part of the game. Next came the Evarts Wildcats. The Jackets rolled this game, sending the Wildcats home with their

tails between their legs after a thorough trouncing, 46-0. Next on the schedule was the Bonham Tigers. The Jackets played a poor game and as a result could barely manage to tie the Tigers 20-20. Twice Middlesboro came from behind and finally went ahead only to have Benham retie the score again. This tie definitely put us out of the running fcr the C. V. C. title.

Next the Jackets journeyed to Pineville, probably the greatest rival of our schedule.

In this game, played in rain, mud and bitter cold, the Jackets lagged in the first quarter, but finally got steamed up in the second uarter to score two touchdowns to Pineville’s one to take a 13-6 half-time lead. The second half was entirely dominated by the Jackets and as the final whistle blew, a dirty, wet, tired but happy swarm of Yellow Jackets !eft the field with a 33-6 victory.

Now came the game which the Jackets had been waiting for. Since the Harlan Green Dragons had beaten us the year before in the final game of the season and thus shat tered the conference hopes, the Jackets were out for bood. In a game played in mud, but somewhat milder weather than the week before, the Jackets, after blocking two kicks, rolled on to a sweet 32-6 revenge victory.

Thus the Jackets ended the ‘5] season with 8 wins 1 loss and 1 tie, a highly suc cessful season and one far beyond the wildest hopes of the Yellow Jackets fans at the beginning of the season.

Middlesboro started off her l952season with a non-conference win over Pruden by 59-43. Next the Jackets journeyed to Pineyule where they won a rather slow moving game 37-26. Next came Lone Jack, whom the Jackets defeated 58-41 After ventur ing to Evarts and winning 52-34, the Jackets tripped Benham 53-29 on our home floor.

The return match at Lone Jack saw a stub-

born mustang team go down 53-50. Next the Jackets took a 67-49 win at Lynch, fol lowing it up with a 58-41 win over Cumber land. The Jackets were finally tripped up in conference play as Harlan’s Green Dragons dealt us our first loss of the year and in conference play 46-44. Then came the Cor bin Redhounds who dealt us a 48-42 de feat. Our third defeat in a row came at the hands of Bell High 36-29. The Jackets hit 60-25. Benham again fell easily 52-29. A die hard gang of wildcats from Everts finally fell 61-44. Next Powells Valley fell in a non-conference tilt 58-38. The Jackets turned back the Lynch Bulldogs once again 73-46 in our highest scored game this far.

The Cumberland Redskins finally fell 36-34 after battling the much favored Jackets to the were. Revenge was sweet as the Jackets defeated Harlan 57-55 in an overtime period. Once again Middlesboro defeated Hall High, this time 56-49. Middlesboro defeated Bell Hi 58-47 before a capacity crowd and thus captured the B division title of the C. V. C. This was a great honor since Middlesboro will no longer be in the C.V.C. after this year

MUSIC

AT

MIDDLESBORO A source of pride to every member of the community is the Middlesboro High School Band which fulfilled all expectations with fine shows at the football games, two concerts during the winter months, participa tion in the Southeastern Kentucky Music Festival, and many various appearances dur ing the school year. This organization, under the direction of Mr. Vernon Stassen, is headed by drum major, David Blondell. Mildred Schooler and Aifleta Thayler gained the enviable position of Band Sponsor, annually bestowed upon the outstanding personality among the senior girls of the band. Proof of the popularity of the band is shown in the welcomed appearances at football games, at various community functions of the outdoor type, and many school activities where perfDrmance is greeted with much enthusiasm.

Much enthusiasm was created in the band through Julian Pitzer’s sport column in the Daily News, describing the weekly half-time performances.

Highlighting the year’s appearances were: a concert for the teachers meeting at Union College, dedication of the Roadside Park, and a concert for the Southeastern Kentucky Music Festival Association.
