CONNECTION Register your school for a Kentucky Goes to College event High schools planning to hold Kentucky Goes to College initiatives this fall are urged to register with KHEAA. Schools that do so by May 31 will receive free promotional materials, training and the latest news and information.

Kentucky Goes to College offers resources for schools and organizations interested in enhancing their college-going culture through initiatives like College Decision Day, Close the Deal and Kentucky College Application Campaign.

These initiatives give high school students handson help in applying to college, understanding admissions and financial aid processes, and gives Kentucky schools a way to celebrate and recognize seniors for making educational plans beyond the high school level.

Roxanne Lewis joins KHEAA as KEES coordinator KHEAA welcomes Roxanne Lewis as the new KEES coordinator.

Roxanne has worked in financial aid at several colleges and universities in Kentucky and Ohio, most recently as assistant director of financial aid for Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro.

Roxanne holds a bachelor’s degree from Centre College and a master’s degree from the University of Louisville. She is a native of Jefferson County.

KHEAA is pleased to have someone with Roxanne’s knowledge and experience assuming the role of KEES coordinator.

Joplin Rice named outreach counselor in South Central KY

Deadline for KHEAA essay contest approaching May 31 is the deadline for rising juniors to submit essays for the “Promote Your School” scholarship contest, sponsored by KHEAA.

Joplin Rice is the new KHEAA outreach counselor in South Central Kentucky. His region encompasses Casey, Clark, Estill, Garrard, Jackson, Laurel, Lee, Lincoln, Madison, Owsley, Powell, Pulaski and Rockcastle counties.

The student who writes the best essay will win a $500 scholarship and a photo shoot at his or her school.

The school must participate in the Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship (KEES) program for the student to be eligible.

The essay must be no more than 200 words long. It cannot mention the student’s name, school, county or community. The essay topic must be shown at the top of the page. The student’s name, address and high school must be listed at the bottom of the essay. The student must be a junior during the 2018–2019 school year. “I am grateful to have been given an opportunity to help students from my home get access to the resources they need to have fulfilling and successful futures,” Joplin said. “South Central Kentucky is where I was born and raised, and I look forward to giving back to the region.”

Photos from the winning school will be used in KHEAA publications and on KHEAA websites. The winner will be chosen by a committee of KHEAA employees.

His parents are both school administrators in Powell County, he said, so serving educational needs in the area runs in the family.

“Joplin has done an excellent job as a college coach at Powell County High School, and we are so glad he is joining our outreach team so he can use that knowledge to help students and families in his region,” Director of Outreach Services Kim Dolan said.

Students from high schools that have been featured in the past five years — Logan County, Daviess County, Lexington STEAM Academy, Somerset Christian and J. Graham Brown — are not eligible to enter this year’s contest.

Joplin has a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Kentucky and is working on a master’s in social work at UK. -2-

KDE seeks comments on math, reading, writing standards

Scholarship Spotlight

Interested parties have through June 5 to comment on the Kentucky Department of Education’s revised standards for math and through June 12 to comment on revised standards for reading and writing.

Early Childhood Development Scholarship

The feedback and comments will be considered before KDE takes the proposed standards to the Kentucky Board of Education for action later this year. If approved, the new standards would take effect in the 2019–20 school year.

Because of the amount of text in the survey, anyone commenting should use a full-size computer or laptop.

Eligibility: Must be a Kentucky resident; be a U.S. citizen, national or permanent resident; be employed at least 20 hours a week in an eligible early childhood facility; pursue an approved early childhood program; and not be enrolled in more than 9 credit hours per academic term.

An individual who has access to professional development funds from other education programs (such as Head Start) is not eligible. Recipient cannot have any unpaid financial obligation to KHEAA or any other Title IV program and must agree to a service commitment.

June 1 deadline for storytelling contest

June 1 is the deadline for children ages 7–17 to enter the Kentucky Youth Storytelling Competition. The contest is sponsored by the Kentucky Storytelling Association.

Video entries of a solo storyteller or a tandem team telling a single story should be submitted on DVD or by using an electronic link. Winners will receive a $100 cash prize, a one-year membership in the association, admission passes to two storytelling festivals and the chance to tell their stories on stage at the Kentucky Storytelling Conference and other events.

Students thinking about college or technical school may find these tips helpful in getting more money to pay for their education: • File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if they haven’t already done so.

• Visit www.kheaa.com and click on Paying for College.

• Look for local scholarships provided by community organizations and businesses.

• Talk with a financial aid officer at the school they plan to attend to learn about any aid the school has available.

• Take out student loans only after they have received all the free aid — grants, scholarships and work-study — for which they qualify. If they need loans, they should only borrow as much as they really need.

• Apply, apply, apply. The more financial aid for which they apply, the better their chances of getting enough aid to pay for college. They should make sure to meet all deadlines.
